Why Gut Health Matters

What is the “Gut Microbiome”?

Your gut microbiome is a unique microbial community, populated by trillions of microscopic organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, inside your large intestine. It starts to develop at birth through the transmission of microorganisms from your mother during delivery or breastfeeding and continues to evolve through diet and environmental exposures. Bacteria are the most studied type of microbes, and most of them are extremely important for your health.

What Does Your Gut Microbiome do?

Digestion

• Helps break down complex carbohydrates and certain dietary fibres, which may help maintain healthy body weight, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and lower the risk of chronic inflammation

• Helps to metabolize bile in your intestines so that it can be reabsorbed and recycled by your liver

Immunity

• Helps control how your immune system works by training immune cells, modulating immune responses, and maintaining immune homeostasis

• Competes with bad microbes for habitat and nutrients, thus preventing the outgrowth of unhelpful microbes that are harmful to your body

FloraFood

• Produces short-chain fatty acids that feed the cells in your gut lining, keeping bad microbes and toxins inside from escaping into your bloodstream

Mental Health

• New research suggests that beneficial microbes may affect the central nervous system through the gut-brain axis and stimulate the production of neurotransmitters, which are involved in various neurological and behavioural functions such as sleep and mood.

Take Care of Your Gut Microbiome

• Diversify your food selections by incorporating a plant-rich diet with a variety of whole grains, colourful vegetables and fruits, and fermented foods. These whole foods offer plenty of dietary fibre that promote the growth of healthy bacteria.

• Limit the intake of artificial sweeteners and processed foods to avoid the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and the accumulation of toxins.

• Take probiotics and prebiotics in supplement forms to help promote growth of beneficial microbes. [For details on probiotics and prebiotics, refer to the article ‘Understanding the Three Ps- Prebiotics, Probiotics & Postbiotics’ from the JanuaryFebruary 2023 issue of the Nurturing Health Newsletter.]

Walking Your Way to Lower Cholesterol

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your health, particularly when it comes to managing cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is a common concern, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke, but regular physical activity, like walking, can help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and raise “good” HDL cholesterol. Best of all, it requires just a pair of comfortable shoes and a commitment to taking steps toward better health.

When you walk, your body burns calories and stimulates the enzymes that help move the “bad” LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol1 out of the blood and into the liver, where it is broken down and removed from the body. Walking also boosts HDL (highdensity lipoprotein) cholesterol2, which helps carry LDL cholesterol away from arteries and back to the liver for disposal.

Additionally, walking improves circulation, strengthens the heart, and aids in weight management—all factors that contribute to better cholesterol levels. Studies suggest that walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, can significantly improve cholesterol and overall cardiovascular health.3

How to Get Started

1. Set a Goal: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week. This could be broken into five 30-minute sessions or shorter increments spread throughout the day.

2. Choose Your Pace: A brisk pace, where you can talk but feel slightly out of breath, is ideal. If you’re just starting out, begin with a slower pace and gradually increase your speed and duration.

3. Find a Route You Enjoy: Whether it’s a park, neighbourhood streets, or a treadmill, choose an environment that motivates you to keep going.

4. Make It Social: Invite a friend or family member to join you for accountability and enjoyment.

Walking regularly not only lowers cholesterol but also reduces stress, improves mood, and enhances overall well-being. By lacing up your sneakers and stepping out for a walk each day, you take a vital step toward a healthier, longer life.

Networking Tips for MyAIMStore Members

[Excerpt from https://myaimstore.com/blog/networking-tips-for-my-aim-store-members/]

Networking is an essential skill for any business owner, particularly for those operating within the health and wellness industry where personal recommendations and trusted relationships play a significant role in customer decisions. For My AIM Store members, effective networking can expand your customer base, provide valuable partnerships, and enhance your knowledge and resources. Here’s how you can master the art of networking to benefit your online store.

Understanding the Value of Networking

Networking isn’t just about selling your products; it’s about building relationships that can lead to support, advice, collaborations, and referrals. These relationships can be with fellow My AIM Store members, health and wellness influencers, or even customers who can provide testimonials and word-of-mouth referrals. Each connection has the potential to open doors to new opportunities and markets.

Start with a Solid Introduction

Your introduction is your first chance to make an impression, so you want it to count. Prepare a concise and compelling way to introduce yourself and your business. Focus on what sets your My AIM Store apart from others, such as unique products, your approach to customer service, or your commitment to health and wellness. A memorable introduction can make people want to learn more about you and your business.

Leverage Social Media Platforms

Social media is a powerful tool for networking in today’s digital world. Use platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and X to connect with other business owners and customers. LinkedIn, in particular, is great for connecting with professionals in the health and wellness industry. You can join groups, participate in discussions, and share content that positions you as a knowledgeable leader in your field.

Follow Up and Stay Connected

The key to building lasting relationships is follow-up. After meeting someone new, send a message thanking them for their time and mentioning something specific from your conversation to help them remember you. Keep in touch by sharing articles, product updates, or upcoming events they might be interested in. Consistent, thoughtful communication keeps you on their radar and strengthens your relationship over time.

Offer Value Before Expecting It

One of the most effective networking strategies is to offer value before expecting anything in return. This could mean providing useful information, making introductions, or offering your expertise in a particular area. When you help others, they are more likely to want to help you in return, creating a reciprocal relationship that benefits everyone involved.

Create a Referral Network

A referral network can significantly amplify your reach. Encourage satisfied customers to refer others to your store by offering incentives such as discounts or free products for every successful referral.

Practice Active Listening

Effective networking involves as much listening as talking. When you’re having conversations, practice active listening. This means paying close attention to what the other person is saying without planning your response while they’re speaking. Active listening can help you understand their needs and how you might be able to assist them, which can be the foundation of a strong professional relationship.

Stay Genuine and Ethical

Always remain genuine and ethical in your networking efforts. People are more likely to do business with someone they trust and respect. Avoid exaggerating claims about products or the potential benefits of a business relationship. Keep your interactions professional and honest, which will build your reputation as a reliable and trustworthy business owner.

Conclusions

Networking is an art that requires patience, strategy, and genuine interaction. For My AIM Store members, effective networking isn’t just about expanding the business but also about building a community that supports and grows together. By leveraging both online and offline networking strategies, staying engaged with your contacts, and consistently providing value, you can develop a network that supports your business goals and contributes to your success in the health and wellness industry.

Is Coenzyme Q10 Worth Taking?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is found naturally in your body cells and helps with energy production. It also acts as an antioxidant to protect cells against oxidative stress.* Since our bodies produce less CoQ10 as we age, taking CoQ10 supplementation may be worthwhile for the following potential health benefits:

Heart Health

High blood pressure often leads to oxidative stress and cell damage. The antioxidative properties of CoQ10 may improve symptoms and reduce the risk of heart-related complications, such as lowering blood pressure.

Brain Health

Oxidative stress promotes the release of harmful compounds that may contribute to various disease mechanisms, thereby promoting the progression of many neurodegenerative disorders. Recent studies indicate that low levels of CoQ10 concentration may be associated with the onset of neurological diagnoses. Supplementation may help slow down neurodegeneration.

Director Lora Wishart participated in the Christmas market on November 29, 2024 at the Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre, Midland ON.

Skin Health

As a potent antioxidant, CoQ10 may help reduce oxidative damage to our skin caused by the exposure to UV rays and harmful elements. Studies have found that CoQ10 treatment increased intracellular CoQ10 levels and promoted proliferation of fibroblasts. The results suggested that CoQ10 has positive effects on promoting antioxidant protection and increasing collagen production in skin.

Supplemental CoQ10 comes in two different forms: ubiquinol and ubiquinone. Studies show that there is no significant difference between the two forms regarding absorption. CoQ10 is a well-tolerated nutrient, though it is best to use it as directed or consult with a health care practitioner. *Oxidative stress is the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body that leads to cell damage.
