Deflating the Holiday Bloat

while Staying Afloat! By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

Ah, the festive season – a time of joy, laughter, and yes, a bit of overindulgence in the culinary delights that make this time of year so special. However, it is a challenge to keep your tummy content and your spirits high as we navigate the delightful dance of preventing gas and bloating after indulging in all things delicious during the festive season! The main culprits of bloating and abdominal discomfort, apart from simply having too much food in general, are those foods that are over-loaded with unhealthy fats and sugar. Why do these two factors cause so much damage? Here are some of the key mechanisms involved, which go a long way to helping us understand what´s happening in our bodies when we indulge: Delayed Gastric Emptying: Fatty foods, especially those high in saturated fats, can delay gastric emptying, which is the process of food leaving the stomach and entering the small intestine for further digestion. This delay can result in a feeling of fullness and discomfort, contributing to bloating. A study published in the journal "Gut" in 1994 found that high-fat meals significantly slowed gastric emptying.2 Gas Production: Sugary foods and drinks can ferment in the gut, leading to the production of gas, primarily carbon dioxide and methane. This gas production can cause abdominal distension and bloating. A study published in the journal "Gastroenterology" in 1986 demonstrated increased gas production with the consumption of sugars, especially fructose.3 4

Nov - Dec 2023 / to order call 011-675-0477

Changes in Gut Microbiota: Diets high in fats and sugars can alter the composition of the gut microbiota. These changes may promote the growth of gas-producing bacteria or contribute to gut dysbiosis, leading to increased gas production and bloating. A study published in "Nature" in 2019 highlighted the connection between diet and gut microbiota composition and function.1 High Salt Intake: Many processed and high-fat foods are also high in salt (sodium). Excessive salt intake can lead to water retention and sodium-induced bloating. This is often seen as a temporary weight gain after consuming salty and processed foods. Inflammatory Response: High consumption of fatty and sugary foods can lead to lowgrade inflammation in the gut. Inflammation can disrupt normal digestive processes and lead to bloating and discomfort. While not specific to bloating, this inflammation can contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms. Individual Sensitivity: Some individuals are more sensitive to certain types of foods, including those high in fats and sugars. Their digestive systems may react more strongly to these foods, resulting in bloating and discomfort.

PRODUCT FEATURE

The dilemma still prevails even though we now understand why we get uncomfortable. Here are 4 tips to help you have LESS discomfort and still enjoy the festive season with all the garnishes. 1.

Probably the most important tip of all, is to make sure that your gut microbiota are in tip-top shape. Disturbances in gut bacteria is usually the main cause of gas and bloating and without adding enough fibre to the diet, this can be very problematic. Supplements are extremely useful during times of indulgence, as they really help to keep those little chaps happy. The important thing to remember when choosing a Probiotic supplement is that it must contain billions of bacteria. You read correctly! Billions, not millions as many are lost in digestion so we want to make sure that enough bacteria make it through into the lower digestive tract where they perform their magic! AIM FloraFood contains 3 billion colony- forming units (CFU) per serving. So go for it. Take a probiotic with each meal that contains foods that are high in fats and sugars.

2. Increase the amount of FIBRE in your daily intake. Since you are unlikely to cook Christmas pudding with whole-wheat flour or add oat porridge as a side to the turkey and ham, this is the time to add a fibre supplement. AIM Fit n’ Fiber is perfect. This product could help your digestive system to cope. 3. Make sure you get enough PROTEIN every day. Protein not only provides the necessary amino acids for keeping your muscles in shape, but it also helps to create a feeling of fullness, so you are less likely to indulge later in the day. I usually mix my ProPeas with a scoop of Fit n’ Fiber, literally killing two birds with one stone! 4. The last, but not the least on the list, is to make sure you are getting enough micronutrients on a daily basis. These are the vitamins, minerals and trace elements needed by the body EVERY DAY to make your body function properly. AIM BarleyLife or CoCoa LeafGreens contain all the nutrients that you would normally find in green leafy vegetables (that you are NOT eating), so this is a great way to make sure your body gets the nourishment it needs during those indulgent, but delicious festivities. It's important to note that the effects of overindulgence in fatty and sugar-loaded foods can vary among individuals. Some people may experience bloating more severely or quickly than others. If bloating becomes chronic or severe, or if you have concerns about your diet's impact on your digestive health, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for dietary recommendations. PET HEALTH

Doggone Itches Be Gone By Eric Ingram - AIM USA Graphic Designer

Idaho winters can get pretty “ruff” on a dog that regularly needs to use the facilities outside. We let our labradoodle Sophie's coat grow thicker to shield her from the cold outdoors. She’s never had any issues with this bushy look.

While removing the extra fur, we noticed her skin was very flaky and dry, so we applied some pet-approved moisturiser. Even so, she would begin to gnaw at her still itchy skin after only a short time. I then realised that we needed to treat this from the inside out.

It wasn’t that long ago that she started chewing and scratching at her fur a bit more than usual. We didn't think much of it at first, but at bath times we could see she had been chewing out small patches of her fur, and her skin had a slight odour.

Working for AIM and having designed our Pet Health datasheet, I knew exactly what to do. We started giving her nutrient-dense foods along with BarleyLife for an added nutritional boost.

Our vet recommended oatmeal baths to help her itchy skin. We also purchased a comb to brush out excess undercoat fur and aerate the skin. We did this for a few months, but it didn't seem to help. After an exceptionally long winter, the warmth of summer finally allowed our dog to spend longer periods of time outside instead of being cooped up indoors. It was also time for Sophie's summer grooming to trim her winter coat.

PET HEALTH

At first, she was cautious about the new smell of the BarleyLife but soon was gobbling it down and licking her bowl. Most dogs and cats instinctively chew grass to help with digestive issues, so the juice powder of barley grass is a natural fit for their dietary needs. The essential fatty acids in AIMega could help with skin hydration, so we squeezed the encapsulated seed oils onto her food. Within two weeks, we saw positive results. No more excessive chewing of her fur, which is softer and shinier now. And no more dry, flaky skin.

I recently noticed that as she gets up after sleeping, she takes extra-long stretches to get those joints moving, so it was time to add Frame Essentials. Now when I come home from work, she makes figure eights around my legs to greet me and maybe even to show her thanks. If I could just get her to let us file her nails without sedation, it would be the cherry on the top! Our pets give us so much more than we can give them with our busy lives, so make sure to give them the added health and nutrition that AIM products provide.

Wholefood Supplements for

egetarian & Vegan Diets By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

As more individuals adopt vegan and vegetarian lifestyles for ethical, environmental, or health reasons, the importance of understanding and addressing potential nutrient deficiencies becomes increasingly evident.1, 2, 3 Here are some possible nutrient deficiencies in vegan or vegetarian diets, along with references: Vitamin B12: Deficiency in vitamin B12 is common in vegans and vegetarians because it is primarily found in animal products. A lack of B12 can lead to anaemia, nerve damage, and cognitive impairment. Vegetarian foods that provide Vitamin B12 are fortified breakfast cereals, plant milks, and meat substitutes. Nutritional yeast is a popular source of vitamin B12 for vegans.7 Iron: Plant-based sources of iron (non-haem iron) are not as readily absorbed by the body as haem iron from animal products. Iron deficiency anaemia can result from inadequate iron intake. Plant-based foods that provide iron include legumes, fortified cereals and quinoa.5 Calcium: While many plant foods contain calcium, vegans and some vegetarians may have a lower calcium intake than omnivores. Inadequate calcium can lead to weakened bones. Vegetarian sources of calcium include fortified plant milks (almond, oat and rice milk), tofu and leafy greens.4 Vitamin D: Vitamin D is primarily obtained from sunlight exposure and fortified foods. Vegans and vegetarians who don't get enough sun or consume fortified products 10

Nov - Dec 2023 / to order call 011-675-0477

may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency, which can affect bone health. Plant-based sources of vitamin D include fortified cereals and plant milks. However, the most natural source of vitamin D is sunlight. Spend time outdoors to synthesize vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight.8 Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are essential for heart and brain health. Plant-based sources like flaxseeds and walnuts provide alpha linolenic acid (ALA), but conversion to EPA and DHA in the body can be inefficient. The best plant-based form of EPA and DHA occurs in algae. Protein: While plant-based diets can provide adequate protein, vegans and vegetarians need to ensure they consume a variety of protein sources to obtain all essential amino acids. Plant-based sources of protein are of course all legumes (chickpeas, soya beans, soybean products such as tofu) nuts and seeds. Zinc: Plant-based diets may contain less bioavailable zinc than diets including animal products. Zinc deficiency can impair immune function and wound healing. Plant-based foods containing zinc include nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes.6

HEALTH FEATURE

What can AIM offer vegetarians (and vegans) to make up for these potential deficits? BARLEYLIFE & COCOA LEAFGREENS It is well known that leafy green vegetables such as spinach, young barley leaves, spinach, Swiss chard, kale and broccoli heads, are rich in iron. It is interesting to note that in order to make this iron from plants more absorbable and available to the body you have it in conjunction with foods that are high in vitamin C, like kiwi fruits, citrus fruits and papaya. REDIBEETS These superfoods not only provide small amounts of iron, but they are also rich in nitrates, and potassium. All these nutrients help iron absorption and provision of compounds that help the immune system to function. JUST CARROTS This product needs no introduction, as we all know the benefits of eating more carrots. The beta carotene that is provided is a powerful antioxidant and helps to prevent cellular damage. PROPEAS This product speaks for itself, offering 12 grams of pure protein in one serving. Since vegetarians are inclined to not get enough protein, then this supplement is for you.

AIMEGA Since the major source of omega 3 fatty acids are flax seeds, chia seeds, algae and fatty fish, it makes sense that many vegans will fall short of the minimum requirements for omega 3 fatty acids. In my opinion, most people, vegetarian or carnivorous, will not get enough from dietary sources. Supplementing with these essential fats is non-negotiable in my practice. The benefits of these super nutrients are plenty, including optimal brain function, hormone balance and the prevention of inflammation. To mitigate all these potential deficiencies, individuals following vegan or vegetarian diets should focus on diverse food choices, consider fortified foods, and in some cases, use supplements, especially when recommended by a healthcare professional. Regular monitoring of nutrient levels through blood tests can help identify deficiencies early and guide appropriate interventions.

Summer can never be long enough for most children, so any thoughts about returning to school are likely unwelcome. Fortunately, it’s parents or guardians who are responsible for all of the preparation required to send kids back to school. Otherwise, it might never happen. And supplemental nutrition from AIM can enhance that growth. Whether or not a child is a picky eater, wholefood drinks made with BarleyLife Xtra Apple-Cherry or Pineapple and CoCoa LeafGreens are likely to be a tasty hit with kids of all ages. As my husband, Wayne, and I are both in our late 70s, we are very interested in learning how to improve our brain power. My Journey with AIM, Skateboarding and Veganism By Graham Denoon - AIM SA Support Centre Representative

I have been a passionate skateboarder since 1985 and have achieved notable success both on a personal and professional level. My skateboarding journey began after I had moved from Cape Town to Johannesburg. The people, whose house we took over, were the ones who introduced me to this incredible sport. It was my first experience and I loved it because there were no rules and regulations. It was a sport that invited freedom to do what and when you wanted. In my opinion, skateboarding is one of the world´s most innovative and inclusive activities and encompasses both art, lifestyle and recreation. Some time after this initiation into the skateboarding world, I started investigating and incorporating veganism and the benefits of the vegan diet on health. Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products (meat, dairy, eggs and for some also honey); particularly in diet and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. A vegan diet comprises only foods that have a plant origin. Vegan diets are different from vegetarian diets in that the latter may include foods such as dairy, eggs and fish. With the change to a vegan diet, I also became more careful and selective about the foods that I eat, focusing on eating natural whole food products and taking care to read ingredient labels on food 18

packaging to avoid products that contain animal derivatives, artificial colourants and flavourings, and chemical additives as well as preservatives. I gained much knowledge and work experience about the AIM products and nutrition, and a better understanding of how the body works and how important the correct nutrition and supplementation is for a healthy body. AIM has an amazing range of products, which have undergone rigorous research and testing before being introduced to the market. I have used a variety of AIM products over the years, with BarleyLife powder being my staple base product for whole body health. I also use the ProPeas and CoCoa LeafGreens, as with being a vegan together with my active lifestyle it is important to ensure that I get adequate protein in my diet, both from vegan foods and supplements. AIM ProPeas combined with CoCoa LeafGreens is a great source of vegan protein with many other benefits. Now that the product is a vegan formula, I have started using Frame Essentials and am excited about how the product can help to preserve my joint and bone health as I age.

TESTIMONIAL

As far as my skateboarding career is concerned, my success over the last 9 years is summarised as follows: 2014 – 3rd place in the KDC SA vert championship. 2015 – 3rd place in the KDC SA vert championship Midway Mayhem (warm up event). 2015 – 2nd place in the KDC SA vert championships (part of the Skateboarding World Championships). 2016 – 2nd place in the KDC SA vert championship Midway Mayhem (warm up event). I have basically achieved placings in all the events in which I competed. This year, aged 48, I entered my first skateboarding competition since 2016. I was pleasantly surprised when at prize-giving my name was announced as the winner of my division. It was wonderful to finally win a skateboarding competition, which has been a career goal of mine ever since I began competing in the sport.

I believe that this success would not have been easily achieved without the proper nutrition and years of practice and determination. With the help of the AIM products, and trying hard to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through skateboarding, which is a great whole body workout and stress reliever, I hope to be able to continue to ride my skateboard well into the future.

Thank you AIM and thank you to the world of skateboarding for all these wonderful opportunities and experiences!

AIM INGREDIENTS

The Beauty of

Lemongrass Oil You likely recognise lemongrass as an ingredient in Thai food and other Southeast Asian countries. This fragrant tropical plant has been used for cooking as well as traditional medicine for thousands of years. It was in the Philippines where the first known records about lemongrass cultivation and export originated in the 17th century. By 1917, lemongrass had been introduced to Haiti and tropical areas of the United States. Seventy-nine years later, AIM introduced Renewed Balance, and, for good reason, lemongrass oil is a major ingredient in the formulation of this soothing body cream. The species used to obtain Renewed Renewed Balance Balance’s lemongrass oil is Cymbopogon schoenanthus, which is also known as camel grass. And like the “self-moisturising” camel that can desert walk for a week without water, lemongrass oil is a natural skin moisturiser that provides you with a variety of inner-beauty benefits. Recognised for its citrus fragrance, lemongrass oil contains citral and myrcene, antioxidants that help fight free radicals that damage collagen and elastin in your skin. This means citral and myrcene combat the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines and age spots, so lemongrass helps prevent further damage and aging of your skin. Citral and myrcene are also terpenes, unsaturated hydrocarbons present in the essential oils of plants such as lemongrass and citrus plants. These compounds may help stimulate your skin fibroblasts: the cells responsible for producing collagen. Furthermore, lemongrass oil provides astringent properties that help tighten up pores and shrink enlarged pores that accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. This lemongrass action makes wrinkles appear less prominent. The inclusion of lemongrass oil in the body-cream formulation only adds to the plant-based beauty of Renewed Balance.

Mag-nificence CWR

Sourced from the Dead Sea, it contains 28,800 mg of magnesium chloride in each bottle. Pouring the recommended 60 ml into your bathwater adds 4,800 mg of this mineral to bathe in and experience its relaxing effects.

Mag-nificence CWR

You don’t need a bathtub to benefit from Mag-nificence CWR. Simply apply it directly to your skin to absorb the magnesium it provides.

Cramp, Cramp, Cramp

Given magnesium’s role in neuromuscular transmission and muscle contraction, it makes sense that applying it topically to muscle cramps can help ease the pain and relax the affected muscles.

Not everyone can go on vacations that allow them to luxuriate in tropical seas. Mag-nificence CWR provides a soothingly inexpensive alternative to distant, magnesium-rich seawater. This bath additive delivers the benefits from magnesium as you soak it in through your skin. With Mag-nificence CWR, bathing is like immersing yourself in a private tropical sea of topical magnesium.

A skin-deep study at the University of Queensland provided evidence that topical magnesium can permeate the skin, assisted by its mineral concentration and the length of exposure. One of the noteworthy elements of this research is that magnesium permeation is aided by the openings where hair grows, allowing this essential mineral to be further absorbed through the skin for use in the body. The magnesium chloride present in the world’s oceans is the most common form. When you are immersed in the sea, magnesium chloride is easily absorbed through your skin, making it the natural choice for Mag-nificence CWR. nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

Frequently Asked

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Is there anyone who should not use AIM FloraFood? It is safe for everyone; however, diabetics using it should be monitored carefully as blood sugar levels may fluctuate and insulin intake may need to be regulated. When using dietary supplements, it is recommended that you consult your healthcare practitioner.

FloraFood - Why a glass container instead of a plastic container? The amber glass bottle protects the product from both light and oxidation which can decrease the life of the bacteria.

FloraFood - Why is a human strain used? According to a number of specialists, human strains are a better choice for supplementation by humans. Therefore, the lactic acid bacteria used are human strains that are suitable for both production and survival in the human intestinal tract. Bacteria derived from dairy and other sources are less likely to remain in the intestinal tract of humans. They may afford only temporary, if any, benefits. Human strains show better colonisation and effectiveness. All three strains of bacteria in FloraFood are cultured in a laboratory environment from good bacteria derived more than 30 years ago from a healthy human source. 22

ReAssure SP - Is the pumpkin seed oil cold pressed? Yes, the pumpkin seed oil is cold pressed virgin oil.

ReAssure SP - If someone is allergic to pumpkin seeds, could the ReAssure cause an allergic reaction? We recommend that you do not consume ReAssure SP if you are allergic to pumpkin seeds.

ReAssure SP - Why is the capsule a gelatine capsule and not a vegan capsule? The oils found within ReAssure SP require a soft-gel capsule to ensure proper shelf life. We have experimented with vegan soft-gel; however, the current technology is sufficient to provide an adequate shelf life.

Why must I use ReAssure SP for a minimum of three months? We recommend taking ReAssure SP for three months to experince all aspects of the formula. Some benefits will be noticeable within weeks. However, some benefits will not be fully achieved until three months of use.
