PRUDENTLY MANAGED FOUNDATION FUND BENEFITS COMMUNITY More than $10,000 in scholarships will be granted to Chugiak-Eagle River students in 2015, according to Jim Palmer, president of the Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation. That is just a fraction of the assistance the Foundation provides each year to area charitable causes. Since its establishment in 1995, the Foundation has issued $323,864 to deserving local projects. The results have been noticeable but largely unheralded. The idea of forming an organization to help fund local projects was proposed by the ChugiakEagle River Chamber of Commerce in 1992. The Foundation came into being in 1996, funded by a $46,000 surplus remaining from the highly-successful Arctic Winter Games held here that spring. The international Games brought athletes from nations located in the Arctic latitudes. That money was expanded by local donations and invested, with earnings used to fund various grants.

That fund balance grew considerably from a bequest by the Glenn and Mary Lou Briggs family. Mary Lou Briggs had long funded scholarships to help local students obtain a college education and the Foundation pledged to honor that tradition. Scholarship application forms are available on the Foundation Web site at www.cerfoundation.org

The Foundation’s birth was recognized in 1997 by a grant of $14,000 to Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska and smaller grants in succeeding years. Among the wide variety of projects funded over the years have been bringing the Vietnam Moving Wall to Eagle River, Excellence in Education awards to local teachers, the annual Grad Blast celebrations for local high school seniors, grants to musical groups, dog mushers, sports teams, educational projects, Rotary, and Blood Bank of Alaska. In all, more than 50 projects have benefitted from Foundation grants.

Contributions to the Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation is listed by the Permanent Fund Dividend as an eligible charity. “All donations are appreciated,” Palmer said. “The money is wisely managed and goes to worthwhile projects that benefit our whole community.”

The pantry mission is to provide temporary, emergency food to help meet the dietary needs of resident of Eagle River, Chugiak, Peters Creek and Eklutna. The Food Pantry is 100% volunteer operated. The Food Pantry is located in the

Eagle River Presbyterian Church 12836 Old Glenn Highway. We serve the public on Mondays and Fridays 10 to 1 and Tuesday evenings 5:30 to 7:30 Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off at the church or call our message phone at 694-5228.
