his year at the 2018 NCBA Trade Show in Phoenix Arizona the ABHA was in attendance. We set up a booth at the trade show and participated in the event. The ABHA resumed attending and participating in the trade show last year after a few years of absence. For those of you that may not be familiar with the term NCBA it stands for National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. This is the largest trade show in the beef industry. The event is rotated around the country each year. At this event attendees and beef producers have the opportunity to view the latest products and trends in our industry as well as having the opportunity to speak with associations such as ourselves in person and learn more about what’s happening in the respective breeds. There is also a Cattlemen’s College, several guest speakers, and lots of informative seminars going on throughout the trade show event. Cattlemen from all over the country and world attend this 3-day event. As a growing and expanding association, the board of directors feel it is important that we participate in such events in order to continue to create awareness and understanding of our breed. Our presence at events such as this is working and paying dividends to our association. Each year that I have attended events like NCBA and the BIF conference, it is obvious that we are becoming more widely accepted and recognized. This year in Phoenix I found that to be more evident than ever before. I was amazed at the number of people that I spoke to that recognized the breed and the interest shown for the breed was quite exciting. In the past the number one statement has been “how do I get a Black Hereford or I have never heard of this breed of cattle before.”

There are several reasons that our breed popularity is growing. I commend your board of directors for the steps that they have and are continuing to take in promoting the association and in improving the way that the association conducts business. Cattlemen are discovering the endless breeding combinations that Black Hereford cattle offer and the benefit of those genetic combinations, most of all the credit goes to the breeders. You are simply producing better cattle than you were just a few years ago.

Breeders are expanding the genetic gene pool as well as relying on some of the proven lines that have been around for a few years. Black Hereford breeders have been learning how to mate our cattle as we move forward. We now have enough history to understand as well as the ability to analyze what blood lines work together and which ones don’t. A great bull and a great cow don’t always produce great calves. In today’s world of data and DNA technology we have almost an unlimited resource of tools in our box.

I encourage all of you to use EPDs and more importantly learn how to use them. Data is a tool for you to use to produce the kind of animals that you personally desire or fits your market. It is always about the quality, but the type of quality animal that may be desired in ones marketplace can be a bit different than another. My breeder mentor who has forgotten more about cattle than I will ever know, always compared cattle genetics to human genetics. I know some of you may think that’s a little strange but it helps us understand the genetic process a little better. For example, if in human terms, parents wanted to raise a 7’ basketball star and the male parent was 7 ’ and the female parent was 4’ 2” that probably would not be as likely to produce a 7’ center as it would have if both parents were 7’. It doesn’t mean that genetically the 4’2’ parent doesn’t have some good genetics they just don’t possess the traits we are looking for. The science world is still doing a lot of research on passing traits but many traits have been proven already to be very inheritable. These include both bad and good traits. The ability to match genetics that will improve the next generation and give you the traits you desire is very real. This is why you hear the term multi-trait selection. Don’t use a bull just because he has great growth traits. Your female may have the needed growth but she needs better carcass or she has a bad disposition.

A good rule of thumb in mating is to try to select a sire that is equal to your females strong traits and superior in her weak traits. Most of the time this will get you headed in the right area. We as breeders tend to lose focus on our ultimate goal.

would like to thank the membership for their confidence in me in the last Board of Directors election. Your support is appreciated and I will strive to serve with the utmost integrity.

In December, the board finalized our genetic testing service with Igenity/ Neogen. Pricing structures and products available are found on the ABHA website and the tests and supplies can be ordered on the Digital Beef platform. The board also authorized travel for Executive Director Brian Chism to the National Western Stock hg in Denver, CO as well as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix, AZ. Following an incident with a fraudulent birth record, the board unanimously voted to permanently restrict the certification of an F1 heifer.

Please remember the importance of submitting accurate, truthful data during all collection times.

Even seemingly simple changes can have large effects across the breed and our EPD’s can only be effective with accurate record keeping and truthful reporting.

In January, the board was very busy.

After the most successful national sale in ABHA history, the Association is in a very solvent position. A big thank you to all the buyers and consignors who made that possible. The National Show & Sale will be held again in Sedalia, MO this year with the possibility of beginning a rotation in 2019.

The board also voted with no dissent to do away with the pedigree notation fees. Previously when you turned in results

from your genetic testing, you would have been charged $5 per event per animal.

Now because of our partnership with Igenity/Neogen being handled through the Digital Beef system in large batch orders, hands-on work from our staff is no longer necessary and thus we lifted any extra cost to the breeder. All potential herd sires that have passed their Certified Herd Sire test will receive the CHS notation behind their name on pedigrees.

The fee waiver is for testing done through the ABHA platform, testing done independently and turned in by hand will still be assessed the fees.

Our committee structure for the year was approved. We have seven standing committees populated with effective and involved people that will help guide our association in the coming year. If you have questions, concerns, or ideas, the appropriate method to begin bringing those forward is by contacting the appropriate committee chair.

The ABHA will start assessing late fees for late payments at the National Show & Sale. Those paying on sale day or by check or credit card within 10 days after will not be assessed any fees. However, a percentage-based fee system will take effect after 10 days. Best advice is to be prepared to pay on sale day and if you are order buying then get your customer moving and the order paid off quickly.

Our pending work docket is piling up quickly and 2018 appears to be a busy year for the Board. Here’s to wishing you all an active and profitable year!ABHA

his winter I have been able to travel extensively to cattle events across the United States. In early January I attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Established in 1906 the 16day event is known as the premier livestock, rodeo, and horse show in the nation, drawing a global audience.

The stock show is host to one of the world’s richest regular season professional rodeos and extensive livestock shows drawing 650,000+ visitors each year.

In 1906 the first National Western Stock Show was held under circus tents that had been borrowed from the circus. This was the case for the first three years until a permanent structure began construction in 1908.

Due to funding received from the Packing and Railroad companies, the area that is used today was completed in six months. The venue was used for the stock show and rodeo but also for the some of the 1908 Democratic National Convention events. Many historic events have taken place in this venue. If you have not seen the space, take time to visit and just see the venue. Take note if you attend that the area is located “on the hill” and the cattle are “in the yards.”

The history behind “the yards” is very unique as the old Denver Union Stock Yards is on the grounds. This venue was a central stockyard for producers to ship their animals to be sold. History tells that cattle, hogs, and lambs were all traded at this historic site. With such a large livestock market, meat packers surrounded the area with packing plants. These companies would place their orders and the orders were filled with the animals from the inventory at the Denver Union Stock Yards.

The yards and the Packers were connected by wooden catwalks. The original wooden catwalks have since been replaced with modern structures, but you can still oversee the yards from above. For many years a central stockyard was the preferred way for producers to sell their livestock, but producers began to sell to feedlots and other marketing avenues. Thus, leading the bustling yards that housed thousands of animals to be empty. In modern time the yards are empty, but each December the area comes back to life as preparations are made for the annual stock show. Major upgrades are planned for the yards in the coming year.

This year’s event marked the first time that Black Hereford bulls were on display. Rod and Jamie Garman of Ground Zero Farms had two of their Black Hereford bulls on display in “Herd Bull Alley.” Spectators from across the globe come every year no matter how hot or cold the weather may be to see this event. During this time, I was able to talk with producers and answer their questions related to the ABHA. This display gave the association great exposure. A tremendous thank you to

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association hosts the annual Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show each January. Cattle producers from across the United States descended upon Phoenix, Arizona for this year’s event. Many cattle producers stopped at the ABHA booth to learn about the breed and the impact it could have on their operation. Logan Hill, Teresa and Tim Tarter and I all attended the event. This was a very worthwhile event for the association.

As springtime nears, the number of production sales increases. I have been able to travel to many of the ABHA breeders’ sales and met with you the members. It is a pleasure to spend time with you and learn about your operations. As the association continues to grow I look forward to attending more events and meeting you all.

If you have upcoming sales or events happening, please send that information to me so it can be added to the website.

The associations new genetic testing system has been up and running for some time now, many members have begun using this system. Our agreement with Neogen allows you to receive discounted testing as long as the test is ordered thru the ABHA. In order to receive the discounted pricing, all tests must be ordered thru your existing DigitalBeef account. Please take note of where the system tells you to send the samples. As sending to the incorrect location can cause significant delay and costs. Approval was given in January that all tests ordered thru the ABHA will not be charged a notation fee. Fees still apply for notations submitted from third-party labs.

The Certified Herd Bull test must be ordered thru the ABHA. Male animals that meet the requirements to be a certified herd bull will have the notation of “CHS” on their registration paper. This test is required for male animals born after Jan. 1, 2017 used in the production of Black Hereford animals.

Please remember how important it is to submit data on your animals. Ensure that the data you submit meets the requirements and is submitted in a timely manner.

Weaning weights should be collected on animals 160- 250 days of age. Yearling weights should be collected between 320 and 410 days of age. Per policy, performance breeders who fail to submit data on 2/3 of their animals will not receive updated EPD’s. This data is very important to your operation and others, but it helps increase the use of Black Hereford genetics in other markets. Reference Rule 2.1 for more details.

or the commercial cow-calf producer the two most important professional relationships are with the seedstock supplier and the herd veterinarian. Genetics provides a foundation upon which the future of the enterprise will stand. The most influential genetic decisions made by a cow-calf producer who produces their own replacement heifers are the three most recent generations of herd sires.

These bulls account for approximately 75 percent of the calf crop’s genetic makeup in terms of their direct influence as sires of calves and as the sires of the cowherd. Given the tremendous influence of the bull battery, the sire acquisition process takes on a special level of significance and thus, the relationship with the genetic supplier becomes highly important.

One of my mentors in the cattle business believed that before a decision was made on which bulls to purchase, cattle producers should visit the potential seedstock suppliers business at least twice – initially to check out the supplier and secondly to evaluate the cattle. The concept was founded on a commitment to only buying seedstock from herds managed under a similar philosophy and with comparable weather, forage and climatic conditions to the purchaser’s situation. His belief was that if the people were solid, then you could more confidently do business safe in the knowledge that they were creating good cattle and that they would stand behind them.

However, even before contact is made with a seedstock producer, 12

the cow-calf manager must assess their own conditions, level of herd performance in critically important areas, and solidify their goals and objectives for the beef enterprise. Bull buyers who are making choices from an information rich perspective are more prepared to build a solid working relationship with a seedstock supplier. Determining the mating system is another key decision that should be determined by the cow-calf producer using knowledge about their own enterprise as well as leveraging the experience of other producers as well as the genetics supplier. The mating system as well as the sires selected to work within the mating system requires that commercial producers carefully assess four critical areas: 1. Feed resources and environmental limits 2. Labor resources 3. Marketing goals and objectives 4. Gaps between present and desired levels of performance in traits

critical to profitability Once these issues have been addressed in detail then a meaningful discussion can be undertaken with potential seedstock suppliers. A long term and valued relationship with a seedstock supplier(s) begins with business integrity, a commitment to providing solutions to customers, conversations founded on meaningful information, and service after the sale. As these discussions are undertaken, two concepts should always be kept in mind – first, the novice bull buyer deserves an attentive supplier who is willing to provide education, answer questions, and

most importantly follow up after the sale. Secondly, there is a dramatic difference between the supplier whose sole goal is to sell a bull and the supplier focused on solving problems for a customer.

Sire selection should be founded on making the most objective decision possible that is aligned with the overall strategy and vision for the cow-calf enterprise. Thus, it is essential to acquire bulls only from those herds with an active engagement in a performance program backed by a dynamic national data base and supported with state of the art genetic prediction tools. It is not important that a cow-calf producer understand the intricacies of how genetic estimates are calculated but developing a solid functional understanding of how to use the estimates and information is critical. The role of the seedstock supplier is to provide educational and consulting support to assure the comfort level of the customer.

The sire selection process is one driven by winnowing down the available bulls for sale into a group of individuals that possess the appropriate combination of performance metrics that align with the limitations of the resources available on the ranch and assure conformance to the demands of the target market for progeny. This narrowing down process can be driven by several key focal points: Avoid sires that create dystocia. Calving difficulty is a leading cause of both calf and breeding female death loss, contributes to increased

morbidity of calves born in difficult births, and diminishing subsequent reproductive rates of females experiencing dystocia.

Will replacement females be kept from the progeny – if yes, then what is the appropriate level of mature size and milk production for the particular farm or ranch? Attaining profitable levels of reproductive performance depends on keeping the nutritional needs of the herd aligned with cost effective feed sources which are often in the form of grazable forages.

What is the optimal combination of growth, muscularity, marbling and carcass yield for the target market? Producing feeder calves that can be merchandised to generate high levels of revenue is fundamental to profitability.

Finally, what are the gaps in performance for the herd that need to be closed to improve productivity, profitability and quality of life? For example, if cattle are flighty and nervous in handling situation then more focus on docility is warranted. If udders are badly structured leading to calves unable to suckle and thus requiring more labor, then udder quality will need to be addressed.

In each of these discussions, the reputable seedstock breeder will provide information, insight and advice. Using their experience and knowledge is critical to building a genetic base designed for long term satisfaction from the cow-calf enterprise. ABHA

program. This is why AI breeding is so popular.

Whether you choose to do AI breeding is a personal choice but I can assure you it is a shorter path to get you to where you want to be.

The greatest genetic bull in the world is not going to match up with every cow in your herd. He overall will do a pretty good job but I will guarantee you that you will have some cows that just don’t work with him. Selecting AI sires that do possess the traits you are looking for will help you achieve much better results.

Genetic mating for predictable traits is the reason that accurate and strong data is important. The ABHA membership has done a pretty good job in submitting data but we need to do more. We simply can’t breed for the traits we want if the data we are using is incorrect.

How do we get more accurate data? That responsibility falls on the breeder. As a seedstock breeder you have a responsibility to submit all the information that you can on your animals. BW, WW ,YW, scrotal circumferences, ultrasound etc. All of this information is calculated and presented to us in a way that we can relate and understand so that we may use it as a tool.

The online registry system has made it so much easier to submit the data. The board of directors continue to work towards creating a wider variety of data information that would be useful. Creating this database

information in a form that it is useable and accurate is all dependent on the breeders providing the information.

The improvement of the data on our cattle is one reason we are starting to gain more attention. Cattlemen realize that the ABHA is serious about our data and selective breeding programs. If you’re in the seedstock business you need to just make this data collection part of your normal routine throughout the year. Let’s just imagine for a moment that you have raised the best bull in our breed but you have no BW, WW or YW. I for one am not even going to consider using him and neither are many other breeders. His lack of data will reflect on his offspring data and our customers will simply not accept that.

Spring weaning season is just around the corner. Get those scales out or find someone that has a set that you can use. Set up an ultrasound scan of your yearling animals with a tech and lets all do what is expected from us as breeders. When submitting your data you need to remember that there are windows of age that you are required to hit in order to get your adjusted weights. You need to also remember the new Certified Herd Sire Rule that requires all ABHA bulls born after January 1st, 2017 being used to produce registered calves must be tested for genetic defects. Adding data to your herd will make you money very quickly and will allow us to continue with our goal of becoming a leader in the cattle industry. ABHA

ABHA Junior National Rules UPDATED 2/20/2018

GENERAL RULES 1. Exhibitor must be 7 years old and not 22 years old by January 1, 2018, and a member of the American Black Hereford Junior Association (ABHJA). Dues are $25 and must be paid prior to entry. Membership forms may be downloaded at blackhereford.org 2. All animals must be registered with the ABHA. 3. Each entry, must be owned solely by the junior exhibitor(s) and in his/her recorded ownership before June 1. Siblings may jointly own animals, provided both are members of the ABHJA and meet ABHJA age requirements. No animal is eligible to compete if recorded in joint ownership (other than the sibling rule), and no joint ownership with farm name or family name.

4. Horned or de-horned or scurred animals are eligible to show.

5. ONLINE ENTRY FEE IS $40 PER ENTRY UNTIL JUNE 1, 2018.

MAIL IN ENTRY FEE IS $50 and must be postmarked by JUNE 1, 2018. A bedding fee for barn stalls is included in the registration fee. Mail entries to the Junior Nationals, American Black Hereford Association, P.O. Box 2607, Bowling Green, KY 42102. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. 6. Final Entry and Ownership Deadline is June 1. All animals must be registered and transferred prior to the June 1 entry and ownership deadline date. No late transfers or entries will be accepted. Entries with “pending” listed, as the registration number will not be accepted, and entry will be refused. This includes calves showing on the sides of cows in the cow-calf pair show. Entry fees are non-refundable. Calves showing part of a pair, can be shown on their own, a separate entry fee is due.

7. All cattle must be on the grounds and checked in by 12 PM CST on June 28th, 2018. NO EXCEPTIONS. 8. Hard copy registration certificate must be presented at check-in.

Tattoos that are missing, illegible, altered, incorrect and/or in any other way disagree with the official ABHA records will be justifiable cause for disqualification of entry. Check tattoos well before leaving for the ABHJA. ABHA Staff or designated individuals can ask to check tattoos at any time.

9. Entries must meet Kentucky health regulations. All animals must have an official health certificate. Refer to Kentucky health requirements.

10. Exhibitor must show his/her own animals. Only exhibitors who are in attendance at the ABHJA and are physically unable to show the animals due to illness or injury will be excused. In the case of extenuating circumstances, the family must come to the ABHA board/staff, in which case, the board of directors/staff have sole discretion as to whether the animal may be shown by a substitute showman. Owner may secure another junior member to show his/ her animals if excused or if exhibitor has more than one entry in the same class. It is recommended that if you have more than one animal being shown in a class you utilize a fellow junior from your own state to assist. No adult may assist exhibitor in showring.

11. Exhibitor must wear official show shirt in showmanship and during

the junior show. Entry numbers must be worn on chest/back. Additional show shirts may be purchase.

12. If all requirements aren’t met, the ABHA Board and staff reserve the right to disqualify any entry.

13. All persons making entries in the show shall agree to abide by all the rules and regulations as outlined and will not hold the American Black Hereford Association or the 2018 American Black Hereford Junior Association Show Committee organizers responsible for accident, loss or injury to any person, animal or article.

14. Breeding cattle will not be weighed.

15. Due to L.D. Brown Exposition Center regulations and safety of exhibitors NO DOGS will be allowed on the grounds, in the tie outs, in the barns or in the coliseum.

16. Any animal a junior enters may be used in the team-fitting competition and/or be asked to be used in the judging contest.

17. The ABHA, reserves the right for all class winners and runner ups to be subject to DNA testing to verify parentage.

18. It is a policy of the ABHA board of directors that if an animal gets loose in the showring, an exhibitor will be given two chances to regain control of said animal throughout the duration of that particular show.

After the third instance exhibitor and animal will be dismissed from the showring by an ABHA board member or ABHA staff member 19. It is strongly advised that exhibitors bring generators for backup use.

STALLING -Stalling will be pre-assigned.

-No cattle OR tack is allowed in the barns until Wednesday, June 27,

2019 @ 11 AM CST. -All cattle exhibiting at the event must be stalled in respective space. If

under special circumstance the case arises petition may be made

to show staff for relocation.

Livestock exhibiting signs of any infectious, contagious or communicable disease such as, but not limited to, warts, ringworm, pinkeye or foot rot are not eligible for exhibition. Beef Cattle Deworming Strategies Dewoming cattle on pasture leads to higher profits for grazers

Michigan State University Extension eef cattle deworming is very important to reduce internal parasites. Cattle are not only threatened by outside pests like face flies and horn flies, but also internal parasites like lungworms and gastrointestinal roundworms. Anthelmintics or dewormers are used to control these internal parasites. Some anthelmintics are also effective against external parasites.

Parasites can lead to reduced performance in cattle. Losses can result from depressed feed intake and conversion, lower average daily gain or milk production and lower reproductive performance. Parasites are also very dangerous for the health of the animal. They can lead to reduced immunity, reduced weight and the appearance of diseases like anemia. It is very important to detect the signs of infection by these parasites to prevent any major losses to the herd. One effective tool for monitoring parasite loads in cattle is to conduct routine fecal analysis. This allows for more efficient and timely implementation of deworming programs.

To better justify the costs of beef cattle deworming and handling, it is important to understand when deworming is most effective. Cattle usually get infected with parasites from the pastures they graze. Larvae from worms live and thrive in the pastures and infect cattle when they ingest this grass. The grass has to be wet from either rain or dew, and the soil temperature has to be above 55 degrees for the larvae to reach the

grass blades. Larvae cannot swim to the grass blades when grasses are dry.

Larvae numbers decline significantly when the sun dries the pastures for several weeks, so there is reduced danger of worm infestation at this time and consequently reduced benefit from deworming. Timing is critical for strategic dewoming programs. If you effectively deworm cattle in the fall coming off pasture, they should remain clean all winter. At spring pasture turnout, the risk for parasite infection increases.

Age of the animal may impact parasite loads. Older cows are not as susceptible to worm infections as they gradually develop immunity. Nursing calves on the other hand are at high risk of internal worms and it is vital to deworm them at the appropriate time. Deworming at earlier stages of infection can result in improved weaning weights. It is best to deworm nursing calves at three months of age or late June for spring calving herds or calves six to eight weeks after turnout onto pasture. Reducing the calf parasite load should increase subsequent weaning weights by 10 to 20 pounds per calf. Mid-summer processing also provides the opportunity for additional management like implanting, tagging, vaccinating or sorting.

Many effective products are available including pour-on, feed through and injectables. Consult with your veterinarian to set-up a deworming program that fits your production and management goals. J&N Ranch Inducted Into Hall of Fame

J

oe and Norma Hoagland of J&N Ranch were inducted into the American Black Hereford Association's (ABHA) Hall of Fame on November 9, 2017, during the association’s Annual Meeting.

J&N Ranch is located in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Joe and Norma Hoagland registered the first Black Hereford, purchased the first ABHA membership, published the first Black Hereford magazine and held the first ABHA National Sale. Over 75 newspaper and magazine articles have been written nationally and internationally about the Hoagland's' pioneering work in the cattle

industry.

The Hoagland's are also one of the largest independent citrus growers in Texas, producing Rio Red grapefruit as well as Navel and Valencia oranges near McAllen, Texas.

Joe is a graduate and former board member of Tulane University.

He received a law degree from the University of Kansas in 1974. He served six terms in the Kansas State Legislature and was Majority Floor Leader in 1983 and 1984. He also served two terms as a member of the National Commission on Uniform State Laws.

In the 1990s, Joe worked in professional baseball in the player development department for three different teams: the Astros, Yankees and the Mets. In 2000, he signed the Mets' first-round draft pick. He was the first scout to discover Albert Pujols when he was just a sophomore in high school.

Norma graduated from the University of Kansas and is a former Miss Kansas, model, TV personality and author. She has completed TV commercials for Payless Shoes, Holiday Inn, Super Foods, Toyota, and MasterCard. Wife and mother of three, she has written a book on the architectural history of two buildings in Kansas. She is currently working on a new book to be published in 2019.

A lifelong 4-Her, Norma has been a project leader, community club leader and now serves as a trustee of the Kansas 4-H Foundation. She is also a board member of the Kansas State Oral History Project. She has always been a very active partner in the family cattle business and computerized all the early pedigrees for ABHA. The Hoagland’s have been in the cattle business in Kansas since 1866. Their ranch will be featured in a new book called Kansas Century Farms, to be released in 2018.

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL ABHA MEMBERS AND BLACK HEREFORD BREEDERS Under the current Bylaws of the American Black Hereford Association it is important to understand what cattle can and cannot be registered and/or transferred to the ABHA. With sales and breeders growing annually here are the details that you need to know: An F1 female is recorded in the ABHA not registered, therefore if you have an F1 it can actually be recorded in the ABHA and in another association without a bylaw violation. But it must be recorded IN the ABHA to register calves in the ABHA. The only way an animal can be registered within the ABHA is if the animal’s sire and dam are both recorded or registered in the ABHA, American Hereford Association or Canadian Hereford Association. If another association issues a registration number for an animal already in the ABHA they can be transferred and used within the ABHA under their original ABHA number.

An animal that is recorded or registered with the ABHA can be transferred to another owner regardless of the animal owner’s status. The purchase must be validated by documentation and provided to the ABHA. The transfer fee for Non-member transfer is $20 per animal and can be paid by the purchaser.

An animal cannot be registered in the ABHA if both of the parents are not registered in the ABHA. Before buying cattle ask if they are or were registered in the ABHA and insist they be transferred as a condition of the purchase.

Ground Zero Farms Showcase ABHA Bulls at National Stock Show

A

merican Black Hereford Association (ABHA) bulls were a part of Herd Bull Alley at the National Western Stock Show for the first time in 2018. Rod and Jamie Garman, owners of Ground Zero Farms located in Watts, OK purchased the space and brought two Black Hereford bulls to Denver, CO for the annual livestock event.

Dale Pitchford, Herd Manager of Ground Zero Farms said, “We were excited to have the bulls on display. This event was a great time for attendees to ask questions and learn more about the American Black Hereford Association.” There was a wide variety of individuals who stopped by the booth. Some visitors were familiar with the breed and what the ABHA is doing, while others did not know much about the association. Many who stopped discussed how they had been using Angus and Hereford genetics in their operations to

produce commercial animals for many years. Those who stopped often said they now see the added value a Black Hereford could bring to their operations.

“We were very happy to be a part of Herd Bully Alley and showcase the genetics in our Black Hereford herd. I believe the exposure from this event will be an asset for the ABHA as a whole” said Rod Garman owner of Ground Zero Farms.

Brian Chism, Executive Director of the ABHA attended this year’s event. He said, “This event was a great opportunity to showcase the quality genetics that makes up the ABHA. Many commercial producers from across the United States and abroad were able to see in person the quality of Black Herefords.”

Chism went on to thank Rod and Jamie Garman and Ground Zero Farms for their efforts to showcase the ABHA and their bulls at this national event. ABHA

J&N Ranch held their 27th Production Sale at their ranch in Leavenworth, Kansas. Many repeat buyers from 9 states returned to the Birthplace of Black Hereford cattle to purchase all of the ranch’s 5 and 6-year old registered cows. Many cows were bred to JN Balder C193 who sold as lot 4 in the sale to Dan Skaggs for $4500. The rest were bred to JN Balder C049 who was sold to a buyer from New Zealand before the sale. Also selling were 54 commercial bred heifers.

The highlight of the sale was the Lot 3 bull, JN Balder C245, a purebred homozygous black bull that was purchased by Chad Jones and Brock Johansen for $7,000. ABHA
