recently returned from New Orleans where the association participated in the 2019 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show. This event is otherwise known as the NCBA and is the largest cattle trade show event in the world.

The ABHA has been represented the last 3 years with a booth at the event.

The trade show this year had a good attendance. Each year that I attend this event or any other type of event that the association participates in, I notice how much more recognized our breed has become. This year was no exceptions. Most people that stopped by the booth knew what a Black Hereford was. I heard far less comments about being just a Black Baldie. We had conversations and questions from many commercial cattlemen that were curious and showed interest in using Black Hereford bulls in their commercial herds.

We now have several bulls across the country that are being used in commercial programs.

The performance of those calves are making a statement in regard to superior growth and performance. Obviously we are becoming more accepted in the industry and now breeders are starting to believe and understand that the ABHA breeding program is working. We as a breed have done a great deal of work in the last 5 years in our genetic improvement and it is making a huge difference in the quality of our bulls and females. Members of the ABHA have done a fantastic job in broadening our genetic base. What we are doing in terms of breeding is working. Gaining acceptance and proving our worth as a young breed has been a slow process. I think it is safe to say we have arrived.

As always we still have much work to do and the challenges never end but we are well on our way.

We just need to keep pushing forward and never deviate from our objectives.

While there I had an opportunity to meet with many people in the industry along with several research people and industry geneticists.

Engaging and having conversations with industry scientists are of great benefit to myself, the association committee chair persons, and

the ABHA board of directors. The more facts and knowledge that we can obtain that directly affect our breeds data and EPDs, the better decisions and recommendations that the board can make on behalf of the members. Over the last 6 months there has been a tremendous amount of questions and discussion regarding the ABHA EPDs and how we evaluate them.

I appreciate these questions. It shows me that members are interested in improving and understanding our EPDS. EPDS are a complicated and an in-depth process in regards to how to accurately calculate and project them. The board of directors have done a lot of work and are continuously having discussions as to how to improve and better calculate our EPDs. Our EPDS and calculation methods are improving but we still have a lot of work to do. Accurate EPDS are based on the amount of accurate data that is submitted.

As a small but growing breed we struggle because of our limited amount of data that we have reported. This is not unique to the ABHA Breed. The problem is that with the small number of animals we have at this time there is simply not enough being reported to refine our EPDS. We are working hard to analyze DNA data and create genomic enhanced EPDS for our breed. We are still at best a couple of years from reaching that goal. Establishing and enhancing EPDs based upon DNA will allow us to add many more needed EPDS such as a calving ease and carcass data.

The ABHA is a hybrid, breed up breed.

This makes it challenging in some cases in establishing baseline EPDS for animals that are produced from the mating of our parent breed.

The board and our geneticist have looked at many scenarios. The best we can find at this time is to base the beginning EPDs of these animals at breed average. I know that isn’t what most of you want to here. We have analyzed and I have had several suggestions as to a better way. Currently when you examine all the facts in regards to accuracy this is still the best for establishing a starting Cont’d on pg. 22 EPDS for these type

n January, the board approved the location of the 2019 National Show, Sale, and Meeting. It will be in Columbia, MO. While still in Missouri, this is a departure and upgrade from the State Fairgrounds in Sedalia.

Most of the event will be able to be indoors and heated, so we are looking forward to that. Further details will be provided as the event nears.

This year’s National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattle Industry Convention in New Orleans, LA was attended by President Tim Tarter and Vice President Robert Walters. The ABHA had a booth on the trade show floor and many good contacts were met and maintained.

Progress is continuing on the ABHA Southwestern Sale in Canton, TX. There is a full slate of quality cattle consigned and it looks to be an excellent event. The sale catalog and

The board met with Dr. Jon Beever of the University of Illinois to discuss the newly found genetic defect Maple Syrup Urine Disease. This is a lethal defect found in some lines of Herefords, and thus has found its way into our breed. The board voted unanimously to add testing for MSUD to the Certified Herd Sire package and it will be available individually, similar to other defects, for back testing on your herd. All CHS qualifying bulls tested prior to March 15, 2019 will be grandfathered in and continue to be usable Certified Herd Sires. CHS testing from March 15 will include the test for MSUD. We are looking forward to green grass and Spring temperatures, and wishing everyone a prosperous and profitable Spring. ABHA

Association Update Tim Tarter

T

he most important thing about the American Black Hereford Association is the cattle, their quality, the marketability, and what they can offer to our industry.

While we still are considered a very small breed we have rapidly passed the number of registered cattle each year that many other small breeds are registering. Our tremendous growth has been a product of our association’s hard work and the cattle that our breeders are producing. We are rapidly on the way to becoming a major player in the industry.

As we grow the management, the business side of the association becomes more involved and demanding. We must continue to offer more services and benefits to our members as well as maintaining a steady and sufficient cash flow based on our budget so that we can continue to expand. We have been successful in meeting these challenges for the last few years and the outlook for the breed both with our cattle and business model is very bright.

Last month we renewed our contract with Neogen and added some new DNA services for our membership. Now you can order a 50 K test for heifers as a stand alone test and add any genetic defect testing on that test as you would like for a minimum price. You can also order that test and have it upgraded to the new Igenity beef profile if you want to score the values of performance on your animals.

Submitting all of your DNA testing thru the association rather than sending the test thru Igenity or another genetic company provides many advantages which includes lower pricing, better service and more different packages of testing combinations available to you.

Spring sales have already started and they have been strong especially the demand for Black Hereford bulls.

The South West breeder’s sale that is coming up on March 30th in Texas is developing nicely. We have a full sale and the quality of animals consigned to the sale is very good. We have lots of buyer’s interested already. We hope as time and available staff allows that we will be able to expand these association sanctioned sales across different regions of the country.

The 2019 committee selections have been made and all of them have a full agenda this spring. These committees play an important role in making recommendations to the board and helping with the work load. If you would like to serve on a committee please let me know. The association’s greatly improved genetics over the past few years is increasingly starting to show, and commercial cattlemen are enjoying great

success crossbreeding with Black Hereford Bulls.

The ABHA board’s agenda is full and we have a lot on our plate once again for 2019. Now that the newly elected board members are settled in, this board is continuously having discussions and debates as to how to move forward, improve our breed and manage the association business. These lively discussions and debates often bring about good solutions to problems and issues.

The association has just finished making the last draw on the grant that we received for locating our headquarters in KY. The total grant money funded to the ABHA was $80,000.

The move to KY and the grant has been a great thing for the ABHA and it has allowed us to move forward with many more of our objectives more quickly. Our mailing list for the magazine continues to grow and I always urge any of you that have customers or people that may be interested in Black Hereford cattle to submit their names to the office so that they may receive the magazine. The magazine as of now is free of charge for anyone that wishes to receive it.

Last year the promotion committee did some research on a new website. We hope to move forward with creating a new website this year. The new site will be much more user friendly, and have a lot more useful information. We plan also to include an online store for merchandise on the site.

Dr. Laruen Hanna is continuing to analyze our 50 k DNA data as it comes into the association. This is important work as we continue to compile enough data to develop genomic enhanced EPDS. Like most things in science developing genomic enhanced EPDs takes time but this is something that in time will be of great benefit in improving the accuracy of Black Hereford EPDs It’s soon going to be time to start submitting weaning and yearling weighs on your calves. I encourage all of you to make this a priority. I also encourage you to submit your scrotal circumference on all your Yearling bulls. We need this data for a scrotal circumference EPDs. It is easy to submit and this EPD relates directly to fertility. If you have never used our online systems feel free to call customer service. They can get you logged on the first time and walk you through the steps. It is easy and much simpler once you learn the system rather than manually sending in your data. This can save a lot of time.

We have made much advancement in our breed. That’s come from determination, dedication and hard work. There will always be new challenges and goals that lie before us. We will meet them head on with passion and enthusiasm. ABHA

ABHA Junior Nationals The 2019 ABHA Junior Nationals will be held June 26th -29th at the LD Brown Convention Center in Bowling Green, Ky. This will be the 3rd Junior National event for the ABHA. Last year’s event was a great success with juniors participating from many states across the country. This junior committee has been working hard planning this year’s event in the hopes that it will be bigger and better.

While the displaying and showing of the junior’s cattle is a big part of the event, more importantly is the opportunity that it brings to get our youth involved in our association. There will be many events other than the show that our juniors may participate in that allows them to interact with each other and the adult members This will also be the 3rd year for our junior scholarships for those that will be continuing their education after high school. Teresa and I started the scholarship program and fund a few years ago and the support and contributions to the funds by the membership has been fantastic. If you wish to contribute to the fund please make your check to the JAHBA and mail to the Bowling Green, KY office.. We will also be crowning our American Black Hereford Queen. Our first and current Queen will be passing her crown and rein over to the newly elected queen during the

event. Kenadi Rumble, our very first Queen has lived up to expectations and has done a great job in representing the breed as ABHA queen.

All of the entry forms and rules will be on the ABHA website and you will only be able to submit your show entries, scholarship applications, and queen applications online. Please pay close attention to all entry deadlines.

The junior nationals are a very special event for me personally. The education that this event provides for our juniors is very valuable but most of all I think all of the juniors as well as the involved adults, look forward to it. It is a fun 3 days. I am a strong believer that the support and guidance that we provide for junior members molds their future in regards to our breed and the cattle industry in general. We have a huge amount of both junior and adult volunteers that help make this event possible along with many corporate sponsors and individual supporters. ABHA Junior National Rules UPDATED 2/28/2019

GENERAL RULES 1. Exhibitor must be 7 years old and not 22 years old by January 1, 2019 and a member of the American Black Hereford Junior Association (ABHJA). Dues are $25 and must be paid prior to entry. Membership forms may be downloaded at blackhereford.org 2. All animals must be registered with the ABHA. 3. Each entry must be owned solely by the junior exhibitor(s) and in his/her recorded ownership before June 1, 2019. Siblings may jointly own animals, provided both are members of the ABHJA and meet ABHJA age requirements. No animal is eligible to compete if recorded in joint ownership (other than the sibling rule), and no joint ownership with farm name or family name.

4. Horned, de-horned or scurred animals are eligible to show.

5. ONLINE ENTRY FEE IS $40 PER ENTRY UNTIL JUNE 1, 2019.

MAIL IN ENTRY FEE IS $50 and must be postmarked by JUNE 1, 2019. A bedding fee for barn stalls is included in the registration fee.

Mail entries to the Junior Nationals, American Black Hereford Association, P.O. Box 2607, Bowling Green, KY 42102. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. 6. Final Entry and Ownership Deadline is June 1, 2019. All animals must be registered and transferred prior to the June 1, 2019 entry and ownership deadline date.

No late transfers or entries will be accepted. Entries with “pending” listed, as the registration number will not be accepted, and entry will be refused. This includes calves showing on the sides of cows in the cowcalf pair show. Entry fees are non-refundable. Calves showing part of a pair, can be shown on their own, a separate entry fee is due.

7. All cattle must be on the grounds and checked in by 12 PM CST on June 27, 2019. NO EXCEPTlONS.

8. Hard copy registration certificate must be presented at checkin. Tattoos that are missing, illegible, altered, incorrect and/or in any other way disagree with the official ABHA records will be justifiable cause for disqualification of entry. Check tattoos well before leaving for the ABHJA. ABHA Staff or designated individual can ask to check tattoos at any time.

9. Entries must meet Kentucky health regulations. All animals must have an official health certificate. Refer to Kentucky Health Requirements.

10. Exhibitor must show his/her own animals. Only exhibitors who are in attendance at the ABHJA and are physically unable to show the animals due to illness or injury will be excused. In the case of extenuating circumstances, the family must come to the ABHA board/staff, in which case, the board of directors / staff have sole discretion as to whether the animal may be shown by a substitute showman. Owner may secure another junior member to show his/ her animals if excused or if exhibitor has more than one entry in the same class. It is recommended that if you have more than one animal being shown in a class you utilize a fellow junior from your own state to assist. No adult may assist exhibitor in showing.

11. Exhibitor must wear a button down collared shirt, close-toed leather boots and jeans or dress slacks in showmanship. The official show shirt must be worn for shows.

Entry numbers must be worn on chest/back. Additional show shirts may be purchased.

12. If all requirements aren’t met, the ABBA Board and staff reserve the right to disqualify any entry.

13. All persons making entries in the show shall agree to abide by all the rules and regulations as outlined and will not hold the American Black Hereford Association or the 2019 American Black Hereford Junior Association Show Committee organizers responsible for accident, loss or injury to any person, animal or article.

14. Breeding cattle will not be weighed.

15. Due to L.D. Brown Exposition Center regulations and safety of exhibitors NO DOGS will be allowed on the grounds, in the tic outs, in the barns or in the coliseum.

17. The ABHA, reserves the right for all class winners and runner ups to be subject to DNA testing to verify parentage.

18. lt is a policy of the JABHA board of directors that if an animal gets loose in the showing, an exhibitor will be given two chances to regain control of said animal throughout the duration of that particular show. After the third instance exhibitor and animal will be dismissed from the showing by an ABHA board member or ABHA staff member 19. lt is strongly advised that exhibitors bring generators for backup use.

STALLING -Stalling will be pre-assigned.

-No cattle OR tack is allowed in the barns until Wednesday, June 26, 2019 @ 11 AM CST. -All cattle exhibiting at the event must be stalled in respective space. If under special circumstance the case arises, petition may be made to show staff for relocation.

ANIMAL HEALTH All Kentucky origin livestock must meet the exhibition requirements in 302 KAR 20:065, as listed below. For additional or updated information, contact the Office of the State Veterinarian at (502) 573-0282 or visit the website at: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/kar/302/020/065.htm.

Livestock exhibiting signs of any infectious, contagious or communicable disease such as, but not limited to, warts, ringworm, pinkeye or foot rot are not eligible for exhibition. All KY origin animals for exhibition shall be individually identified on a certificate of veterinary inspection written within the current calendar year. January 1 through December 31.

16. Any animal a junior enters may be used in the team-fitting competition and/or be asked to be used in the judging contest.

ABHA Junior National Rules SHOWMANSHIP -Divisions will be based on age as of Jan. 1, 2019.

-Each age division will have a class.

-Show staff will determine how to break each division if need be.

-Registration for showmanship will be made at animal check in.

-NO BULLS OR STEERS ALLOWED FOR SHOWMANSHIP.

JUDGING CONTEST -Divisions will be based on age as of Jan. 1, 2019.

-Each age division will be scored separately.

- Junior and peewee division participants will answer one set of questions -Senior and intermediate division participants will answer one set of questions and give one set of reasons.

-Registration for contest will be made at animal check in.

-The maximum rotation for each class is 12 minutes.

TEAM FITTING CONTEST -Teams will be pre-assigned and announced at least one (1) hour prior to the contest.

-Each team will be comprised of three (3) members.

-Time limit of thirty (30) minutes.

-A team member must wear a show harness to display assigned team number -Contestants must bring any and all materials needed to the fitting area, including animal.

-Each team will be allowed the use of one blower.

-No improper fitting methods may be used.

-Clippers may be used at the discretion of team members.

-When time is called, one member from each team will exhibit the animal for final viewing and judging.

INDIVIDUAL SALES CONTEST The main objective of the Individual Sales is to give Juniors a glimpse at real-life situations of selling while promoting the importance of communication skills, marketing technique and understanding of performance and pedigree information. The contest will be held in conjunction with the American Black Hereford Association Junior Nationals.

1. Contestants must be members of American Black Hereford Junior Association.

2. Individuals will compete in their corresponding age divisions.

3. Individuals must register in advance by June 1, 2019. There is no charge to compete in this contest.

4. Presentations will be 3-6 minutes long. The objective of each individual will be to convince the judges that they should purchase their entry.

5. Individuals may present any item that is related to the agriculture beef industry, i.e: an animal, embryo package, semen, etc.

6. Participants will be discounted for using notes.

7. The order of presentation will be determined by ABHA staff and will be posted prior to the contest.

8. Animals are not allowed in this contest; however, participants may use visual aids such as I-Pads, tablets, binder with information pertaining to the item being sold, etc.

9. No posters, dry erase boards etc. may be used during the presentation.

10. Senior and Intermediate contestants will be required to incorporate some form of graphic design and computer technology to design marketing materials that will supplement their presentation in the sale of their product this may include flyers, brochures, ads, etc.

11. Exhibitors will have two (2) minutes to setup their presentation Scoring for Junior and Pee Wee Contestants: Points will be awarded as follows: Knowledge – 25 Points Ability to communicate- 25 points Organization - 25 points Overall effect -25 points (Salesmanship, Creativity/Originality, and Believability) Scoring for Senior and Intermediate Contestants: Points will be awarded as follows: Knowledge – 20 Points Ability to communicate- 20 points Organization - 20 points Overall affect -20 points (Salesmanship, Creativity/ Originality, Believability) Creative Design- 20 points Ten (10) points will be subtracted from the total if judges detect the use of notes. Two points will be subtracted for each minute a presentation goes more than the allotted 6 minutes.

Judging will be by a two-member panel of judges based on 100 points maximum from each judge. Each judge will then rank the individuals based on points allocated.

Junior Scholarships Available Each year the ABHA awards 2 scholarships to junior members that will be continuing their education. The application, deadline, rules and requirements can be found on the ABHA website. The association has always been a strong supporter of our junior association. We firmly believe in the investment that we are making in our juniors as they are the future of our breed. The JABHA junior association is still very young but is growing rapidly. In the short few years that it has been established we have seen many of our former juniors excel in their college education as well as in the industry. We take pride in seeing the success of our juniors and are hopeful that because of their experience as a JABHA member it had a positive impact in their future. I encourage all eligible JABHA members to apply for the 2 scholarships. ABHA

The Campbell Place A Solid Team

R

onnie Campbell Jr., Vickie Campbell and Ronnie Campbell Sr. are The Campbell Place. They consist of a three person partnership. Son, mother and father ~ a solid team. The Campbell Place was established in 2002 where it proudly owns a farm located on West Lane Street in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Ronnie Campbell Jr, says, “First and foremost, I would like to give all the praise and glory to my savior Jesus Christ. HE is the head of my life. Jesus has continually blessed me every day and made all of this attainable.” When The Campbell Place initially started, they were a horse farm, showing and raising Tennessee Walkers. “We were involved in the horse business for as long as I can remember.”

Ronnie states, “Shelbyville is the Walking Horse capital of the world so people couldn’t believe it when I told them I was going to show cattle.” Ronnie’s great grandfather Earnest Campbell previously had a dairy farm on Earnest Campbell Road in Flat Creek Tennessee, where he milked Jersey cattle in which it brought an interest into cattle. “I started really developing an interest and began getting into cattle in 2010. It was then that my mom and I decided to get some cattle.”

At first The Campbell Place owned Commercial Black Baldies but later decided it’s better to have quality than quantity. They did some research and came across the American Black Herefords. “I sold my favorite trail horse to purchase my first registered Black Hereford in 2012. As time went by, I realized how I missed showing horses, and it was then that I decided to show my calves for fun and exposure.”

During Ronnie Campbell Jr’s first year at the National’s, his heifer won first place in her class and it was then that he was completely hooked.

Ronnie states, “I focus my program with raising the best show animal I can, without all the extra feed and supplements to see if can get them to match others by providing great bulls for the commercial farmer.”

Right now The Campbell Place still raises horses and Red and Black Hereford’s.

From having one Black Hereford in 2012 to a herd of 42 now in 2019, The Campbell’s really love their Black Hereford family. Ronnie states “The ABHA is the best group of people to be in an organization with. Everyone is so helpful in so many ways that the list is too long to mention. ”The Campbell Place was named just that because they

have a RV park that they rent out camper spots so it really isn’t just a farm or ranch. “It IS the place to be.”

The ABHA wants to recognize the Campbell Place for all their support and participation. This family is a great representation of the breed, with the aspect of quality over quantity. Their partnership with the promotion, events and continual support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing all their future success. ABHA

animals. We have to base our decisions on facts not what seems right or sounds good.

Let me give you an example. Many of you are calling for a calving ease EPD. I agree we desperately need it. The normal method of establishing a calving ease EPD is based upon the number of animals that are born and being reported as unassisted or assisted.

Currently most of our Calves being born are being reported as unassisted. So if we create a calving ease EPD based upon the reported data most all our bulls would be considered a calving ease bull. We all know that is not correct. So the board is faced with the problem of do we create an EPD that is not accurate just so we can say we have one or do we just ride it out until we obtain enough data that it will have a true representation of our bulls calving ease ability. The board has also discussed creating a calving ease EPD using a different non-traditional method. ABHA Vice President Robert Walters and I had a meeting at the NCBA show with (who

many consider) one of the leading geneticists in the world. He said, sure he could create us a calving ease EPD based upon our parent breeds maternal traits. Wow did we get excited, until we heard him say that it would be about 10% accurate. The point I am trying to make here is that it is frustrating for members and the board both.

This is something we just have to ride out be patient and continue to push for more data. We will get there in time. I know we are all anxious but you just can’t create this stuff out of thin air. I promise you the board of directors are continually working hard and having discussions as to how to move forward and improve. I always welcome your call and questions. I think the more our members are involved and understand the problems we are up against the better it is for all of us. I only ask that you be as patient as you can and have faith in your board that we are doing everything we can to broaden and improve our EPDs. ABHA

Maple Syrup Urine Disease Found in Black Herefords

M

aple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is a genetic disorder found in the Hereford breed. It is labeled as a Class 1 Lethal Defect by the American Hereford Association. However, there is not currently a testing protocol for it within the Hereford breed. Symptoms of the disorder include a sweet smell in the urine, calves may not be able to get up or lift their head, and a loud noise or touch can induce repetitive muscle spasms. This response is caused by the calf ’s inability to process amino acids correctly leading to a quick form of protein poisoning. MSUD is lethal to the calf 100% of the time.

MSUD was brought to our attention by a member breeder who was having calves die unexplainedly. He had contacted Dr. Jon Beever of the University of Illinois who is a leading national expert in genetic defects. After testing the cowherd, he determined that MSUD was prevalent, not only in that herd, but in the Black Hereford population at large. According to Dr. Beever, 287 samples were tested and 13% of

those came back as carriers. This is a large enough occurrence of carrier animals in our population to warrant a mandatory testing protocol.

The ABHA Board of Directors voted unanimously to implement testing for MSUD. The test will be added into the Certified Herd Sire and 50K packages as well as a standalone test. They will be available for purchase on the Digital Beef portal the same way our other tests are offered. All Certified Herd Sires that passed their testing prior to March 15, 2019 are grandfathered into the herd book and will remain usable.

Management of MSUD is very similar to AM, DD, and IE. It is a simple recessive gene, meaning that it’s presence on only one allele of a genotype will not present an afflicted animal. It takes two carrier parents to create the afflicted calf, however an MSUD carrier will pass on the recessive gene in 50% of it’s matings. It is possible to continue to use a carrier animal to create calves that are free of the defect, but the risk is high. The Board believes that the testing protocol through the CHS rule will eventually remove the danger of afflicted animals from the breed. ABHA

n my last Juniors Corner, I talked about the amount of growth that the ABHA and JABHA accomplished in 2018. I would like to see these growths continue this year, especially with the Juniors. Coming up is a great opportunity for this growth to start. The 2019 Junior Nationals is right around the corner. There will be four junior board seats opening up and I encourage all the juniors to apply to be a part of this amazing opportunity. It allows the juniors to voice their opinions about the breed and organization, and recruit new junior members. We will be electing a new ABHA Queen as well which is another great opportunity for you to be the face of the breed. Don’t forget about the scholarship either. Last year two juniors where selected as scholarship recipients. You do not have to be an Ag major to apply. The Junior Board is working on a new contest for the juniors to participate in this year as well, I hope that everyone enters.
