Conceptual Principles I always think of a building like a part of the context, growing naturaly from the urban environement like it’s meant to be there and nowhere else. My designing is a process in time, in which people are the main component. I try to respond at their needs but I also try to make a building or urban space adaptable in time, leaving them the freedom to transform the space in the future. The social component is very important for me, architecture is for people, should be pleasant, should gain people together and create interactions. I have a strong ecological sense, I integrate the natural component in all my projects and try to conserve and respect the nature found on a site.

The most important landmark of Arad has always been the star-shaped fortress, protected by a loop of Mures , but which has never truly belonged to the local community. With the opportunity of its reclaiming, this project approaches an urban

regeneration strategy aiming to integrate the fortress into the urban life. The fortress of Arad was built between 1763-1783 at queen Maria Theresia’s orders with the purpose to defend The Habsburg Monarchy against the Turks’ attacks. A year

after the construction had been finished, the fortress lost its military purpose and became a prison under the army’s administration. In December 2016, the city council started negotiations with the army, which agreed to move and to return the fortress to the city.

regenerate a single object, in my part I created a network of connections which became a strong bond, necessary for a good integration in the urban tissue. Then, the strategy gets beyond the detailed area and connects, through the river, the fortress and 2 natural reservations from Arad County. After the flood in 1970, local

community built a dike to protect the city. Because of its height, the dike hides the fortress, leaving only the church’s towers to be seen. The demand was to rethink the dike as link between public spaces inside the city but also between the fortress and the surroundings of the city.

Strategy After an analysis over the entire city, we drew several conclusions and we planned a common strategy for an intervention which later was divided in 4 loops around the fortress: eccentric nucleuses, Mures’ right riverbank, Mures’ left riverbank and the fortress. Starting from the scale of the city with the purpose to

Military architecture implies a rigorous geometry designed with a defensive logic but the fortifications are only complete with vegetation. The types of essences used were usually several and were chosen to respond to the needs of reserve for tools handle, rifle butt and gun carriage, charcoal production, heating, medicine and food provision, ornament and beauty of the architectural ensemble and of the interior spaces, as well as for their tracing roots and quick growth. Using local plants, the empty area becomes a botanical garden, a place where people can learn about how the vegetation was used in military architecture.

Working with 2 loops, 2 paths were generated: one around the fortress and one along the river. Between them comes a network of alternative routes linked with the right riverbank. The project introduces new facilities and activities, which can be used both in summer and winter covering all ages and social groups. The activities are culture-orientated but in a close relationship with the natural

character of the area and with the water. By redesigning the topography and bedding plants to absorb the extra water and stabilize the riverbank, the risk of flooding was reduced. With this intervention, in time of flood, it’s still possible to enter the fortress while the new parks will not suffer significant damages.

// Space Invaders Theme : reconversion of an industrial area Type : competition - masterplan, housing Key words : adaptability, sharing, community Location : Bergen, Norway Year & duration: 2015, 4 months Team : Mihaela Boldor, Andra Cirtina, Andreea Oarga, Emanuel Tamas, Zoltan Tarina

Participation : conceptual & architectural design , post-processing The Europan 13 site in Bergen has a unique location on the south side of Lungegårdsvannet . Grønneviksøren is today a key site for urban regeneration in the immediacy of Bergen city centre. The site is situated

within Møllendal´s neighbourhood, one of the oldest milling and industrial areas of the city, where much of the ground is reclaimed from Store Lungegårdsvann. Over time, the area has developed as a sort of city backyard, where industries that

required large sites or were incompatible with urban life, were located.

Norway, we want to develop the new habitation area and public spaces not only on the shore but also in the water, this way we are proposing a number of lake dwellings, typical for Norway, creating the possibility of renting for tourists. The concept of the development on the shore and water creates a number of different public spaces, of gardens,

squares, children parks, sport areas, but also offers on the top level of every dwelling a public space which contains a shared kitchen, with living room for meetings and parties and also an garden on the rooftop which offers a great view of the city and mountains.

Strategy Taking into consideration the local community’s needs and wishes for the development of the area we proposed a new community based on sharing in housing and public space, and coexistence between different cultures, age groups and collectivities. In this time of fundamental transformation of the map of

What type of programms will activate the area?

By creating the needed infrastructure and proposing different programs, that are necessary to atract the locals and the tourits all year long. We took into consideration the future developement made by local community and we created a new point of interest, helping not only to start but also mantain the developement of the new habitation area.

We incorporated on our site the existing marathons and we proposed also a new path for the mountain trek so the tourist can start and finish their day inside our public square, animating it. On our shore and also island houses we incorporated houses for tourists, offering them the full experience of living in Norway.

// Space Invaders

Site areas Due to building regulations the site is divided in different areas. The brick building and the space around it will become a commercial center for the area. To keep the typical Norwegian atmosphere some floating houses appear on the shore. Activities We propose various activities

in the new shared spaces. There are big spaces like a pool, a main square, parks, designed for all the community but also smaller spaces like gardens, squares, rooftops for a smaller group. People In our strategy we propose to attract on our site different k inds of people regardless their age, ethinicity or cultural background.

Ecology The new buildings are volumes on a shared green spaces. Every site area becomes a natural environment where people are enjoying the nature: the beach, the park, the brick building’s roof.

Buildings We wish to offer the local community the opportunity to be active in the development of their new homes, offering them the ossibility to create the layout of the dwellings depending on their needs. In this way we allow the buyers greater liberty and the possibility to create, in the housings and commercial buildings, different

spaces and the atmosphere necessary for bussiness. The balconies have sliding glass walls on both sides offering the inhabitants the possibility to transform the space from a completely open space to a more sheltered place, in case of rain or cooler weather, so that they will be able to take advantage of the space all year round.

Common spaces All over the site we propose a system of smaller squares, public green spaces or gardens, that we offer to the members of the community in order not only to increase the conditions of living but also to offer them the possibility to function as a proper community. To be able to create a self sustainable

colectivity. We wish to rehabilitate and refunctionalise the old brick storage building, as so as it will become a meeting point for the local inhabitants with the exterior community of Bergen and even with people outside of the city or country. There will be different functions supported in the building, that are flexible to change

over time depending on the needs of the people that are animating the space, supporting also the needs of the marathons. On top of the building there will be a public garden, offering the best view over the site and water.

03 / Intervention in historic tissue

// Center of fashion and design Theme : contemporary architecture in historic tissue Type : masterplan, multifunctional center Key words : public space, roman, identity, art Location : Rome, Italy Year & duration: 2016, 4 months Team : Mihaela Boldor, Bogdan Ocolisan Participation : analysis, conceptual design, architectural design,

physical model, post-processing, presentation

Short history Trastevere is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome. During the ancient Rome, this area, situated beyond the river Tiber, was populated by a small community of Etruscans,

who during the Roman Empire expansion was joined by immigrant fishermen. Since then until the Middle Ages these low class citizens have built small houses tracing narrow, irregular streets between them, a urban structure

that we call today “medieval tissue.

Current state Nowadays, Trastevere maintains its character thanks to its narrow cobbled streets lined by ancient houses. At night, natives and tourists alike flock to its many pubs and restaurants, but much of the original character of Trastevere remains. A former barrack is built

on the chosen site and the entire plot of 23 hectares is surrounded by a concrete fence. Strategy The project is a synthesis from 3 main elements found in Trastevere: the streets, the square and the courtyard. Viewed by bird’s eye the new complex of buildings has the same tissue as the ontext: a maximum volume split

by narrow, shadowed streets which link wider spaces together. The squares inside this big volume are not visible from outside and become a surprise once the visitor enters the complex, same as the courtyards which can only be seen if you look carefully.

03 / Intervention in historic tissue Taking as a reference the relation between Santa Maria in Trastevere and San Callisto and their different atmospheres, our proposal is a link between San Assisi and Santa Cecillia crossing the 3 new squares, designed at the same scale.

// Center of fashion and design

Concept The first visit in Trastevere was defining for this project, letting us understand better it’s atmosphere: narrow streets, warm colors, vegetation, a lot of people and noise, after 10 minutes of walking we couldn’t indicate where we were on the map of Rome, it looked like a maze. It was a dichotomy between this neighborhood and the rest of the city, but somewhat more it was the picture that we make in our minds

when we think about Italian cities. Having these reasons, in the conceptual phase of the project we decided to integrate all these characteristics in the project that were already there and not to disrupt the image of the area but make it better. The 7 volumes are closed towards the streets and open towards the squares, the accesses are always from the square and the interior circulation is organized towards the squares too. The most i

mportant functions (concert hall and fashion hall) are designed as “box inside a box”: two particular volumes, which generate other spaces around them, can be seen from outside and can be opened during events and used together with the square they are facing.

03 |

03 / Intervention in historic tissue While making the physical model we defined the main elements of the intervention: 1. the empty site as a promise 2. simple, geometric volumes 3. the exceptions as surpiseses 4. light structure 5. the shell becomes a bond 6. vegetation

04 / Masterplan: centrality

// Acilia Madonnetta Theme : urban planning Type : masterplan Key words : public space, centrality, landscape Location : Rome, Italy Year & duration: 2015/2016 , 5 months Team : Mihaela Boldor, Claudia Russo, Giuseppe Scolastici, Edoardo Spagnoli

Participation : analysis, urban strategy, rendering, post-processing In 2003, Rome’s city council made a new territorial strategy, in which were proposed 18 centralities in order to develop the metropolitan area and to transform the monocentric city in a polycentric one. In 2006, after a contest for

designing Acilia Madonnetta’s masterplan, the new centrality was supposed to take form, but because of insufficient founding and bad communication combined with lack of mediation knowledge by the side of the city’s administration, the whole project was

abandoned. Today, there are just 136 hectares of empty land. The demand was to design a new masterplan, to understand what a centrality is, to propose functions at local and urban level and to think about what makes a public space valuable.

analysis became directed on 3 themes (ambiental system, built environment and service and mobility system) and for each one we identified the strong and the weak points and also the opportunities. Then, we drew some conclusions that automatically were transformed into the macrostrategy, also divided in the same

operating levels. At this point the project wasn’t only about resolving problems but thinking creative, proposing strategies that would make that empty site a part of the context, a lively one.

Strategy An urban project is not something to do in a perimeter, so the first phase consisted in an analysis on a very large scale, in which we studied the site’s position (towards the city, the beach, the river of Tiber, the ancient harbor of Ostia), infrastructure, buildings age, monuments and parks. In the second phase, the

04 / Masterplan: centrality Ambiental system Even though this area is well served by green spaces (most of them very good maitained), they are condensed in the east and the south-west. The hydrological system is rich, resulted by the need to irrigate the old agricultural lots, but now they are poorly used.

Built environment Because the neighborhood was built across a larger period of time, a variety of planning typologies, densities and heights can be distinguished. The conflict appears where the houses were built without a previous parceling at the edge of a bigger plot, blocking the interior of it, which cannot be further accessed because of the inexistence of roads.

Mobility system The site is accessible just by car, a local urban transport doesn’t exist. A strong point in this case is the railway; even though now the nearest stations are too far, in the future a new station can be added.

Service system: One of the biggest problems is the presence of a diffuse industry and then the lack of public services in the residential areas.

Green conections -connect ambiental and hydrological systems -improve the view of historical monuments

Morphological cicatrization -connect built areas -limit sprawl

Infrastructure upgrading -new sustainable mobility Service homogenity -better distribution of services

What it takes for an empty site to become a centrality?

Masterplan The main idea of this project was to connect the existing parks through a promenade animated with pleasant public squares, art installations, a channel. In the middle of the site, the promenade expands into a bigger space limited by the university and the cultural center – the centrality’s core. The public parcels are alternated

with the private ones and connected through boulevards. Each local service is related to a thematic park, and the local market expands beyond the limit with gardens. For the residential buildings we chose a closed form; in this way, the inhabitants have access to a more private outdoor space.

design, rendering, post-processing, presentation

Short history Built in the early ’50s, in a modernist style, the building was a canteen for the workers of Guban factory (one of the biggest brands of shoes of that time).

After the fall of the communist system, the factory has been facing a lot of difficulties and lost most of its buildings. The canteen was abandoned.

Current situation Placed in the proximity of the student campus, the canteen is a key point in the future development of the city; it is very well integrated in the urban context, and will function like a joint between two residential areas (the actual one and the one that will be instead of Guban old storages).

What program will reanimate the building? There were two main ideas that generated the theme : the student organizations which were dissipated all around the campus and the low-rate businesses owned by young entrepreneurs. With this project, we wanted to create an interdisciplinary platform, where students, with different

degrees, can communicate easily, can interact with young adults and learn more about their careers, can participate to cultural events. Like this, the canteen will become a place full of life and a cultural pole in the city.

// From canteen to student center

Intervention From 18th century, in Timisoara, the industry has been raising. There were several factories in the city, built with architectural taste which became emblematic for Timisoara. But in time, we lost too much of this industrial patrimony and because of this we decided to keep the canteen as it is,

restaurate it with the initial materials and colors and make just small changes where needed. The structural system was still up to date and supports another level, the only problem was the need of a second stair. Using cheap materials, wood for structure and wooden fabricates for interior design, with flexible furniture, we tried to give this building a new

identity, to make it look playfully and welcoming. Economic strategy The coworking space , the coffee house and the IT hall are money earning spaces, beying able to be rented ; from these earnings the building and the consulting offices can be maintained , also can be organised events for students.

Modern structures

The project was structured in 3 parts. In the first part, in large groups, we imagined how our life will be at the age of 35 and then we had to design our dream apartments. We also had to act like a small community and think about how we want to spend our free time together and which are the shared spaces that we need.

Natural environment

From the second part, the project became individually. I put together all the information and started working on the volume. I have remarked that despite the different sizes of apartments, every one of us wanted to place the rooms in the same way, so with two successive withdrawals, the apartments are lighten naturally and every apartment has

Natural light

a nice view of the surroundings. The last part consisted in: technical detailing of the project, dimensioning the structure(confined masonry) and designing details of one bay.

Apartments I tried my best to respect everybody’s wishes and not to make a standard apartment but to customize all, so in the final project the rooms look like hugging each other because there isn’t a straight barrier between the apartments. Shared spaces The site was higher towards the river and it was mandatory to withdraw the building with 10 meters to guarantee enough space for the future transformation of the waterside, but this gave me the opportunity to place the shared spaces under the ground floor and open towards the river.

// Red house

Aesthetics The look of the building was directly influenced by the site. Placed in an area in transformation, in the south there are apartment buildings, in the west houses and in the east and north factories, this empty site looked to me like the missing piece of the puzzle.I took the traditional structural system of this region of Romania, masonry, from the houses; the decorative bricks from the apartment buildings; the industry inspired me to choose the steel balconies; and the natural component was dictated by the river.

Located in Romania’s capital city, the project should enrich the cultural environment by sheltering in a small and flexible space a variety of activities. The idea was to bring art closer to citizens, by making some pieces visible from the street. The translucent glass let’s just enough light to pass by inside and separates the interior

C.A.S.A is an annual international contest between architecture students, who takes place every year in another city and challenges students to rethink the program of housing.

In the beginning, we traveled to see the site in Targu-Mures. The plot was close the city center, on a street’s corner which was used as a parking lot. That year’s theme was to make an apartment building for 3 to 6

families which also have a public function at the ground floor. The project’s concept had to relate to the habitants personalities and activities.

After the analysis I have drew some conclusions: that the site makes a transition between higher public buildings and small houses, has a very good position in the city, is well related to many functions, but not with green spaces.

What public function? Thinking in a sustainable way I proposed a vegan restaurant, where the habitants can work and eat together and which can be supplied from the roof garden. Inspired by Japanese restaurants, people sit on pillows while eating, see how their food is cooked and have visual contact with the exterior.

The Ramp The particularity of this building is that you can get to the apartments riding the bike. Not only the volume is though like a center which is always circled, but the apartments as well: the furniture is placed in the center and you can move around it.

confortable way impossible and lead to higher degradation of the buildings inside the square. Also the lack of green spaces leads to the excesive heating of the pavement.

Before In this case we observe that because of the higher speed of the wind , the air currents start to go down towards the square, still the speed is decelerated (10km/h), and the buildings around are not affected by it.

Proposed Here the speed of the air currents that go down towards the square start to be higher (15km/h). From the image we clearly observe how these hit the facades and frameworks of the buildings with medium speed (18km/h) , that will end in the degradation of them.

Current The absence of vegetation leads to the creation of whirlwinds that have a speed higher then 22km/h and a pretty hard impact on the buildings around. Also some activities are strongly hardened.
