Introduction Richard Winkworth was born in Bombay and spent his childhood in South-East Asia where his aesthetic and sense of colour developed. After an Art Foundation course at Hastings, a Fine Art BA from Brighton and an MA at Chelsea School of Art, Richard spent two years teaching in London. In 1990 he moved to France and a year later he won the prestigious Spectator Art Prize. In 1995, a Hong Kong holiday confirmed his long-held belief that he needed to return to Asia. He began working and showing in Hong Kong in 1996, where in the following decade he achieved four sell-out one-man shows. Since relocating his studio to Hong Kong in 2007, Richard has become celebrated as a painter of Hong Kong subjects. After his last one-man show at The Cat Street Gallery in 2012/2013, he embarked on some extensive travelling, with visits to the USA, Japan and around South-East Asia, working on the sketch books and ideas which inform his latest show. Richard’s current work can be seen as a contribution to a Hong Kong maritime tradition - arguably the SAR’s only traditional subject – a 150-year heritage going back through Luis Chan, Eika Kato to Marciano Antonio Baptista. His show at Ping Pong features some 40 new works. These are a result of a period of intense reflection and mark a return to the artist’s initial inspiration - the waters and the islands of Hong Kong.
