Elk Grove Football: A Midseason Report

Lucan Amituanai, Staff The Elk Grove High School Football team has had a slow start coming out of the gates this year. The Herd holds a 2-3 record with three games at home and two games away. They ultimately look to dominate their league after a rough preseason with nothing but hard opponents. The boys won their first league match against Cosumnes Oaks 35-17 on 9/15 in good fashion and are moving through their bye week excited and ready to rest.

01

The Herd started the season (8/18) with a tough road trip loss to Granite Bay at their house, starting the year off 0-1. A week later (8/25), they traveled to Antelope looking for a win against the Titans, and a win is what they got, moving them to an even 1-1. The next two weeks was their return home against two tough opponents from the Bay Area: Menlo Atherton (9/1) and San Ramon Valley (9/8), both resulting in losses. And recently, in week 5, the Herd trampled on the Wolfpack bouncing back from their rough start. EG football has been rocked by some long lasting injuries, but look forward to gaining back some gifted players like Frank Cocker, Micah Williams, and Isaiah Sanchez to name a few. This young team has nothing but high expectations for themselves and know that the sky's the limit. With a strong midseason finish against all league teams, the Herd will officially be back in business.

Family YouTuber Ruby Franke Arrested on Child Abuse Charges Marie Ndulue, Staff On August 30, 2023, family vlogger mom Ruby Franke of a YouTube channel “8 Passengers” was arrested along with her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, in Ivins, Utah. Franke and Hildebrandt were charged with six counts of felony child abuse each, after Franke’s son climbed out of a window and ran to a neighbor’s house, begging for food and water. As of now, Franke and Hildebrandt are being held without bail until their next scheduled court appearance.

03

Franke rose to fame in 2015 when her YouTube channel, featuring her husband, Kevin, and their six children, gained nearly 2.3 million followers before being banned and deleted by YouTube following Franke’s arrest. Franke’s content consisted of her children’s daily lives and often controversial parenting advice and techniques, including threatening to take away her children’s “food privileges.” Police had been called on Franke multiple times in the past years by neighbors reporting that she left her children alone in the house for days on end. One of these calls took place in September 2022, where a police officer noticed children inside the house but no actions were taken as they refused to answer the door. Franke and Hildebrandt now face a total of 12 counts of felony child abuse. Each count carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $10,000. The two were arrested after Franke’s emaciated son with fresh wounds and duct tape around his ankles and wrists escaped from Hildebrandt’s home and ran to a neighbor’s house, pleading for food and water. After police searched Hildebrandt’s home, Franke’s ten-year-old daughter was found in a similar condition. The four of Franke’s children that were minors and still living at home were taken into the custody of Utah’s Child and Family Services. Franke and Hildebrandt are in custody, as shown by Washington County Sheriff's office. Their court appearance was postponed from Friday, September 8th, and is to be determined, as of now.

Recap of the GOP Debate Ava Xu, Staff On August 23, 2023, the first Republican debate was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Eight Republican presidential candidates participated in the debate, arguing over a variety of topics such as abortion, the economy of Ukraine, and education. But the most important point was the discussion about former President Donald Trump, who skipped the debate. The eight Republicans were asked whether they would support Trump as the party's nominee even if he was convicted of a crime.

05

The former president’s absence meant several candidates, who have positioned themselves as loud and harsh critics of the former president, were denied opportunities to directly confront him. Chris Christie, who Vivek Ramaswamy said is running a campaign “based on vengeance and grievance” against Trump, spent more time brawling with the entrepreneur than the former president. Former Arkansas Governor, Asa Hutchinson, went long stretches of the debate without being acknowledged. Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and first-time candidate who became the central figure throughout most of the debate, claims to have positioned himself as a defender of Trump, and at times, a stand-in for the former president, who momentarily gave up the stage that Wednesday night. The debate played out in front of a loud crowd of about 4,000 people at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. In the end, the debate felt underwhelming. Trump has continued his massive lead in the polls despite his legal sorrow, and with the crowd’s reactions – including the negative comments and boos when candidates criticized Trump – at times they drowned out the Fox News moderators.

The Kiss Seen Around the World Adrian Bayardo, Editor in Chief On August 20th, 2023, after nearly a month of competition, the FIFA Women’s World Cup concluded in a match between Spain and England. The Spanish women’s national team emerged victorious, and the celebration that followed was supposed to be a joyful event; however, it quickly took a turn for the worst in the blink of an eye. As the team was celebrating their nation’s first Women’s World Cup victory, the president of the Spanish Football (soccer) Federation, Luis Rubiales grabbed player Jenni Hermoso and kissed her on the lips, a kiss Hermoso did not consent to. In the weeks following this incident, Hermoso has formally filed a sexual assault charge against Rubiales. This incident has sparked outrage among women in Spain, and around the world, as it brings to light the injustice women continue to face in professional settings.

07

After defeating England 1-0, the women of the Spanish national team celebrated the victory for their country. Naturally, the Spanish football president was present at the award ceremony. Players grabbed their medals, and that is when Rubiales grabbed Hermoso and kissed her. At the moment, Hermoso did not have much of a reaction. Afterwards, however, Hermoso was live on Instagram, where she expressed her disapproval of the kiss to a teammate in the locker room. She later confirmed this statement on her X (formerly Twitter) account, calling out Rubiales for violating her on the global stage. Immediately, Rubiales denied Hermoso’s allegations, stating that she did consent to the kiss and that the kiss was not sexual, and it was something he would’ve done with his own daughters. FIFA, however, placed Rubiales on provisional suspension for 90 days. A 90-day suspension was not a great enough punishment for the crime in the eyes of Hermoso and her 22 teammates who all agreed to never return to the Spanish national team, unless Rubiales stepped down from his position. In addition, 58 other Spanish women football players rallied behind these 23 women, also agreeing to boycott the national team in the event that Rubiales continued to be the president of Spanish football. Initially, Rubiales refused, still pleading his innocence. But on September 10th, 2023, Rubiales announced his resignation, and also released a video of him formally apologizing for his actions, acknowledging that he made a poor choice at the expense of a player in the football federation he was in charge of. Rubiales wasn’t the only high-ranking Spanish football official to lose his job, however. Coincidentally, the head coach of Spain’s national women’s team, Jorge Vilda, was fired for a separate incident where he had been seen

08

engaging in inappropriate conduct with a female player. Montse Tomé is set to replace Vilda as the coach of the Spanish women’s national team, making her the first woman in Spain to hold the position. While many have downplayed the significance of this incident, it is undeniable that this will have a ripple effect throughout women’s sports in the foreseeable future. Social media has brought awareness about how women are treated in sports, and in the era of instant communication, organizations like FIFA feel even more pressure than ever from people to act and implement change to ensure that an incident like this never occurs again. FIFA has stated that it is launching an investigation on Rubiales, who may be faced with 1-4 years in prison under Spanish law for sexual assault. This likely has men working in the football world more consciously aware of their actions for now, but when the initial buzz from this scandal wears off, will anything change at all? Or will female athletes all over the world continue to face ridicule, harassment, and assault in the dark, while being too afraid or unable to speak out?

Barbie Throughout the Years Olivia Miller, Staff Ever since the Barbie Movie came out this summer, it has been all that people can talk about, and you might begin to wonder how it all started. In 1959, Ruth Handler created a doll representing girls' dreams and aspirations instead of a regular old baby doll. She launched the doll the same year with Mattel, which has owned the company ever since. The original doll was called Barbra Millicent Roberts, and in the first year 300,000 dolls were sold. Two Years later, Ken Carson was introduced, but there wasn't a lot to say about him other than he had great hair. Before women even had the right to own a house on their own, a Barbie dreamhouse was created to show women’s empowerment and independence, which was an inspiration to many young girls.

14

Throughout the 1960’s, astronaut, model (Twiggy), and the first black dolls were released. Barbie had 200+ occupations over the years to spread the idea that girls could do anything, which I find inspirational since back then it wasn't normal for girls to be anything but traditional. To make it even better, in 1980 many diverse dolls were created and named “Barbie” themselves. Before they were just labeled as Barbie’s friends. Then fashion shows inspired by Barbie also became popular with commercials preaching girls to do anything they put their mind to. Mattel also kept the fans updated on Barbie’s life, like in 2004 Ken and her split and have been off and on since. The most popular speculation on this incident is simply because she’s too busy living her own life with her excessive amount of jobs. Bringing it up to 2016, dolls have been more inclusive with body types and launched four different sizes, seven new skin tones, and 24 different hairstyles, while also including important figures like Frida Kahlo, Katherine Johnson, and Amelia Earhart. Many animated movies and TV shows also brought Barbie to life over the past decade. Then of course, the Barbie Movie, starring Margot Robbie directed by Greta Gerwig this year. Barbie has become a staple in so many young girls’ childhoods. It’s so great to see how over the years Barbie has become inclusive and motivating to all girls, even when the world wasn't so supportive of these ideas. I hope that this Barbie magic lives on for the future generations to enjoy.

Noah Lyles Comments on Strike Controversy in the Sports World KyRee Fultz, Staff Noah Lyles, a world class Olympic athlete, fresh off setting world records in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m sprints, had other thoughts on his mind at his press conference after his event. “I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have a world champion on their head, world champion of what? The United States?” Lyles stated. This sparked the question online if the team that wins the NBA championship is the best team in the world. For those who don't know, the FIBA Basketball World Cup is going on at the same exact time, with every country competing to see who is the best. The US did end up losing multiple times, losing one game to Canada and Germany, which resulted in them being unable to finish in the top three for a medal. This further proves Lyles’ suspicions, and he was later seen liking various tweets that suggested that he was right. The US’s loss did not provide the full story however, as the US side of basketball was not playing with their best players. Notable players such as Lebron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant all sat out of the games that resulted in the two losses for team USA. The main issue people have with Lyles’s comments is that the NBA is in fact the best basketball league in the world. So if, in the opinion of Lyles, the champions of the NBA are not world champions, then who are? If you say the FIBA team, then how come the majority of the FIBA players are not in the NBA or are bench players in the NBA?

History of EGHS Le’Andre Murrey, Staff The Elk Grove High School student body is made up of around 1,838 students with a 20:1 student to teacher ratio and a minority enrollment of 61%, and these numbers have remained constant over the past five years. That being said, how many students out of the 1800 on campus know about the history of their school? It is reasonable to assume not very many do. This is the story of Elk Grove High School, located in Elk Grove, California. The journey begins in 1893 and continues into the present day.

17

It all began 1893, when EGHS was first founded. Elk Grove High School was the first union high school in the state of California. Sixteen elementary districts voted to tax themselves for a high school, and they all remained separate until they unified in 1859. The high school first opened its doors to students in 1893 at its first site located on Main Street (now Derr Street and Elk Grove Boulevard in Old Town). In 1922, a new brick building was constructed and remains there to this day. Today this building is now a middle school, home of the Joseph Kerr Knights, but this was originally the home of the Elk Grove Herd. In 1964, the high school moved to its present day location as a three-year high school, and the new building became a junior high school for grades 7-9. Elk Grove is the second oldest high school in Sacramento County. Until 1977, Elk Grove High was the only comprehensive high school in the district. Wow! That’s a lot of information about our school! We have had a pretty extensive history from notable alumni such as Hall of Fame NBA player Bill Cartwright and Lance Briggs, a linebacker in the NFL, and several current baseball players in the MLB, to winning a state championship in basketball in 2022. his school has a lot of history. In a way, we, the students who are attending Elk Grove High School today, are contributing to this rich Elk Grove school history.

Why is Boxing the Best Sport? Mikela Laurenzi, Staff Since the early 1700’s, boxing has been a globally-known sport, and for centuries it has been proven to be the most difficult. Boxing requires special techniques, skills, talents, and patience. It is not something that you can just learn overnight. Personally, I believe that there is no losing in this sport, mostly because if you win or lose, you learn more tactics as well as developing a better mindset each time you step into the ring. The people that go pro dedicate their life, make sacrifices, and give up all their time to an immense amount of training. The most well known boxer in the world, Muhammad Ali, gave up everything he had in order to pursue his career to go pro, and for that he got the title “King of Boxing.”

19

Muhammad Ali started his journey in boxing when he was just twelve years old and he retired in 1981 when he was just 39. What sparked his interest in this sport was when two men stole his bike and so he had the urge to start training so that he could face them; little did he know that this would be his lifelong career. He had played in over 61 fights and had won 56 of them. One statement he made about boxing was “when you saw me in the boxing ring fighting, it wasn't just so that I could beat my opponent. My fighting had a purpose. I had to be successful in order for people to listen to the things I had to say…I hope to inspire others to take control of their lives and to live with pride and self-determination.” This goes to show the amount of work and dedication it takes for someone to be in the sport of boxing. The amount of drive it takes to go pro and become someone known worldwide in this sport is extremely difficult, and takes a lifetime of work. When you step into the ring, you have to remember all the hard work of training it took for you to get to that point. Most people say that it pays off in the end and they never give up, and that even if they lose they always come back stronger. This is why boxing is the best sport.

The Important Balance of Discipline and Leniency Sydney Wesselink, Content Editor Have you ever felt like you couldn’t be successful if you slipped up or if you allowed yourself to rest or have a cheat day? Well, I am here to tell you that is not true. Depending on your goal and your journey, you will find what works for you.

21

When on a fitness journey, you may be on a diet and/or working out, whether that's working out three times a week or six days a week. At some point in that week, your body will need to rest. It will need a chance to regenerate the energy your body needs and allow your muscles to heal and recover. Allowing your body to rest does not mean you're being lazy or getting off track; it just means you are allowing yourself to carry on with your goal in a healthy and sustainable way. If you're eating healthy seven days a week, you are allowed to have cheat food once in a while, whether it’s once a week or a few times a week. It's all about balance. Now if you have that cheat day or a rest day, then that’s where your discipline comes in. You have to be able to tell yourself that was okay and to move on and get back into your routine the next day. When school is in, a lot of students’ goals are to get good grades. This means a lot of stress and can cause anxiety and/or depression. From personal experience, you cannot be successful in school if that is the only thing you focus on. You have to have fun, take a break, watch a movie, or call or hang out with your friends along with making sure your work gets done. If you have a test soon, set a schedule to sit down and study, but don’t make that your life for that week. You can study and do your homework while also making time for family and friends, even yourself. Everyone’s schedule looks different, but always keep in mind that your brain needs a break to be able to focus when it really counts.

Superhero Serial; Chapter 2: A Baffling Invitation Kaitlyn McNally, Staff Aja awoke feeling more comfortable than she had been in a long time. Soft sheets brushed her skin whenever she shifted, a weighted comforter provided warmth and a reassuring pressure, and her head rested on a plush pillow that had incredible neck support – far higher quality than she could ever afford, so none of it was hers. But if none of it was hers then… why was she sleeping in it?? Fueled by adrenaline that banished any trace of sleep, she sat up fast … maybe a little too fast. Blinking away the spots in her vision, she surveyed her surroundings as her heart raced. She was alone, in a decently sized but sparsely decorated room, though the few items that were present were clearly as high-quality as the bedding: a plush rug underneath the fourposter bed, a polished wooden dresser, matching bedside tables that held simple yet stylish lamps, and thick curtains that blocked out most of the sunlight from the window on her right; everything in a forest green and dark wood color scheme. This was definitely not her apartment. Not thirty seconds later, she jumped at a knock on the door to her left. Without waiting for an answer, a man calmly entered the room, carrying a bottle of water.

25

“Good to see you are awake. You have been unconscious for three hours and twenty-seven minutes. It is now five fifty-two pm, and you have been invited to dine with Amethyst. Would you like some water?” “What?” His eyebrows drew minutely closer, presumably in confusion. “You have been unconscious for three hours-” “No no, I heard you, I just…” She trailed off, unsure how to deal with the rapid-fire information she had received, and trying to process the idea that she had been unconscious and at the mercy of their Number One Most Wanted, and had come out of it not only unscathed, but invited to dinner. She fumbled for a response, and blurted out the first one that seemed socially acceptable despite the bizarre situation, “Can I get a name?” “Ah, of course. It’s Dave.” “Dave?” He nodded, “Dave.” The ridiculously formal henchman of the most dangerous man in the city was named Dave. Of course. What even was her life at this point?

♦ 26

A few floors below, Amethyst was reviewing the evening’s menu, but paused as a thought crossed his mind. “How do you think she’s doing?” he asked, turning to his personal assistant. “Sir, you sent Dave to greet her.” “...Yeah?” “He is not known for his tact.” “Oh. Right. …I’m sure it’s fine.”

Badminton, the Most Underrated Sport Khang Pham, Staff In a world filled with basketball, football, soccer, and many other sports, there's one sport that lies in the shadows waiting to be picked up and played. Badminton is easily one of the easiest sports to pick up for anyone of any age and is super fun. Popularized in England and other parts of Europe, badminton is now commonly played in the regions of Asia, most commonly in East Asia. In the west, especially in the US, sports such as football and basketball are commonly watched and commonly attended events. I can confidently go up to someone and ask them what their favorite team or player is from those sports, and they can easily give an answer. Leagues such as the NBA (the National Basketball Association) and the NFL (the National Football League) are widely recognized in the US and many people flock to buy tickets in order to claim the best seats at those events. Names such as Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, and Lebron James are sports legends within their respective sports.

28

But when it comes to badminton, no one bats an eye. I feel like this is due to the fact that badminton has nothing going for it in terms of exposure. I can’t recall a single channel that advertised badminton; throughout elementary school PE class, I don’t remember playing a single game of badminton; on TV in parks I’ve never seen anyone setting up and playing badminton. During the summer before 4th grade, I took a two-month vacation to Vietnam, and it was an extreme culture shock. I never saw a single basketball or anyone playing football in any park, but I did see people of different ages relaxing and playing a game of badminton. I was very perplexed as to why, but now I feel like I have come to a conclusion. In Asia, picking up a racket and hitting a little shuttlecock is very easy for anyone of any age. Also, badminton, only requiring a minimum of two players, makes it easy to find someone to play with, and the unique rules make it engaging and entertaining for all players. It’s as simple as trying not to let the shuttlecock drop and hit it across the net. And speaking of the net, you don’t even need a physical one, you can just draw a line, which makes the sport even easier to play. Badminton should be played here in the US, because it's easy to play, set up, and can be played by anyone and everyone.

Why is Dutch Bros Superior Over Starbucks? Joanna Arteaga, Staff There are many coffee chains all around the world, but the two most popular are Dutch Bros and Starbucks. If there had to be only one, Dutch Bros would do better than Starbucks. Not only is it delicious, but there is an outstanding amount of drinks that you can customize with many different flavors. First, let’s start with fundraising. Dutch Bros always is community-friendly so when a school needs fundraising, you can fill out an application online towards your local Dutch Bros. On the other hand, Starbucks does not hold fundraisers for schools. When there is a fallen officer in our community, Dutch Bros will advertise and give 50% of their profits to the family of the fallen officer..

30

Overall is it better to work at Dutch Bros or Starbucks? Besides both jobs paying about the same, Dutch Bros has excelled in 9 out of the 10 categories against Starbucks. Starbucks only scores high in the benefits and compensation category. Even though many employees have said that they don't get all these benefits promised, Dutch Bros scores in the Overall Rating, Culture & Values, Diversity & Inclusion, Work-Life Balance, Senior Management, Career Opportunities, CEO Approval, Recommend to a Friend, and Positive Business Outlook categories, as shown in the GlassDoor website. All in all, Dutch Bros is outstandingly better than Starbucks. With the great drink selection, and helping out the community, Dutch Bros stays true to their bond and treats everyone with a smile on their face.

The Engineering of a Masterpiece, the Corvette C8 Zo6 Richard Gao, Staff The release of the C8 Corvette acquired the attention of many; however, others were waiting for its more track focused model, the Zo6, being able to go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds and redline at 8500 rpm. This is the most powerful V8 engine in a production car. There's a lot of engineering required to develop this beast of a car, not just the engine. Today we will take a dive on why the C8 Corvette is an automotive masterpiece that is actively competing against European sports cars.

32

The Corvette C8 Zo6 has a 5.5L LT6 Engine, which is a Naturally Aspirated Engine. The key design feature about this engine is that it's a flat-plane, which allows the car to rev to 8500 rpm and produces a spine-tingling exhaust note. The engine is placed in the middle for a near perfect weight distribution. The LT6 V8 engine produces 670 horsepower and 460 lbs of torque. The dual clutch transmission of the car allows the car to accelerate quickly. The engine also uses DOHC (Dual-Overhead-Camshaft), which is used in a lot of high-performance engines. This setup allows improved airflow and more control over the engine’s combustion and valves. The Corvette C8 Zo6 also made changes to its body to maximize its track capabilities. The Corvette took aerodynamics into consideration and the curve is designed that way to reduce air resistance. The Corvette also uses carbon fiber to reduce the weight of the car. The increased fenders allow bigger high-performance tires. The car also uses Brembo brakes to make sure this beast can stop on a dime. The car's rear wing creates downforce which provides stability of the car in corners. What sets this car apart from other super cars is the price per performance ratio. To get this kind of performance, you would need to spend a lot of money; however, the Corvette C8 Zo6 starts at a little over 100K, which is cheaper than others, especially the European counterparts. The Corvette still has 2 newer models that have not been released yet: the ZR1, which will be an upgraded version of the current Zo6, and the Zora, which is named after racing legend and chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, which will be made primarily for the drag strip.
