Voting? Please Vote? Hannah Villarreal, Editor In this article, I will be covering multiple topics related to voting in America. These include: a brief historical review of voting in America, minority groups facing systemic voter restriction, current voter turnout, and the extreme importance of voting. The democracy of America - the people’s vote, was agreed upon in the Declaration of Independence, “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”; however, the right to vote was not implemented until the ratification of the Constitution. The first ‘election’ in America was election of George Washington, our first President, and since then, America has (obviously) gone through some significant changes. Currently, America is being overseen by its 45th president. Now, despite what it says in the Constitution, “all men are created equal”, this country hasn’t really lived up to its words; we tend to be hypocritical in this country. Voting in this country has not always been an equal right for everyone. Prior to 1870, the only people who could vote in America were white men; not entirely surprising to me. The 15th amendment, ratified on February 3rd 1870, allowed for black men in America to vote -
however, this right was not entirely protected and allowed states to create laws and restrictions for voting. An example of these restrictions would be literacy tests to see whether or not they were skilled enough to vote, or having then recite the entire Constitution. These tests were specifically created to target minorities within America and restrict their Constitutional right to vote. The 15th amendment was not protected until after a mass uprising of African Americans who demanded their rights be protected; this created the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Many people may see these requirements as valid, but that is not what a democracy is. It is not collecting the most “competent” individuals and only having them vote - that is not a democracy, that is an aristocracy. A democracy is having everyone counted, knowledgeable or not; everyone deserves to be heard. Now, despite this seeming like such a thing of the past, it is not. Voter restriction is still present in modern America. Since 2010, 25 states have consistently required voters to show photo ID to vote, and some states - I am unable to find a date of when this was enacted and/or proposed - require a driver’s license to vote. While this does seem like a logical thing to require - to ensure those that are voting are who they claim to be - it is extremely impacting of minority groups. In a research report done by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Employment and Training Institute, they found that less than 50% of black and Hispanic individuals those that are age eligible to vote - hold a valid driver’s license; compared to the 85%
of white individuals that do hold a valid driver’s license. Once again, these requirements are conflicting with the idealistic democracy that most Americans view America was founded upon and uphold today. It’s honestly amazing how changed America can seem - but at the same time, it can appear as if nothing has. Again, despite the past fight for equal voting rights, it seems the voter turnout in America has severely decreased over the years. To clarify, voter turnout simple refers to the percentage of people who voted during an election. Presumably, this is because of the lack of representation we see in our own government; people have lost hope in ever being heard. Until 2008, we had never had a black president, and until 2016, we never had women come so close to winning a presidential election. In 2016, America had the lowest voter turnout in 20 years. It was estimated that only 55.4% of eligible voters in America came to the polls and actually voted in 2016. That is absolutely insane to me, I don’t understand why more people are not baffled by this; and I don’t understand why more people in power are not even attempting to fix this. Like I said previously, we are hypocritical. We claim America is a democracy, yet only 55% of eligible voters in America actually vote. Now, I’m not entirely blaming voters - I place blame on our government for not providing people with more access to the polls, not encouraging people to vote, and not implementing any educational classes in high school and/or college that explain the importance of voting. However, those who think their vote doesn’t matter and choose to simply not vote, that’s entirely wrong of them. If people want to be heard, make yourselves heard.

The Old Communist Plotter: Santa Claus Mitchell Schrader, Staff Roundness, jolliness, and generosity are all characteristics that define Santa Claus. These traits along with his leadership during the Christmas season has led to Santa being perceived as a capitalist, due to his work incentivizing increasing the consumption of goods. However, this perception is false. Throughout his long and artificially prolonged life, Santa has worked towards one goal: to spread communism throughout the world. In 1917 the monarchy of Russia was overthrown by a communist revolution. Ever wondered why Russia was one of the first communist countries? Look at where the North Pole is located, then look at Russia’s location. The red in the Soviet flag truly symbolizes the red in Santa’s coat. Of course, Santa’s coat is dyed red with the blood of his capitalist enemies slain in countless battles lost to time. Santa’s true ambition in giving gifts to children world(-ish) wide is to destabilize capitalist nations. Even now, America’s economy is becoming more and more reliant on the holiday season. This gives Santa leverage. Too much leverage for a supposedly nonpolitical figure. All Santa has to do is pull the plug on the holiday season.
His elves in the factories will stop working, safe in their guaranteed payment. The reindeer carriage will not fly. The communistic offerings of cookies and milk will go uneaten and undrunk. The government will collapse. Only then will Santa fly in with his reindeer carriage. But this time he won’t be going to your homes. He’s going to the White House after the Red Christmas. Then, all of America will be red.

Should Parents Lie to Their Kids About Santa Claus? Maleiya Santos, Staff For years, parents have told children about the jolly fat old man with his sleigh and reindeer, otherwise known as Santa Claus. This is the man many parents teach their children about during the Christmas season. Though it may be exciting to wait for a man to suddenly break into your house in the middle of the night and leave gifts, this isn’t a very good thing to tell kids. When children do realize the truth about Santa, it could lead them to have some trust issues with their peers. Santa even has a creepy “Elf on a shelf” doll that supposedly “watches their children’s every move”. It’s pretty terrifying to know that a toy sitting in your house is watching you and reporting back to a man in another continent-who is looking for signs of bad behavior. When children believe in Santa’s existence a certain age, and eventually plan “catching” Santa Claus in the middle of the
night in order to prove his existence, the heartbreaking that this fantastic story that revolves around Christmas is a lie is so sad. Children realize that all the reason behind their efforts in making letters, cookies, preparing milk, and trying to fall asleep before Santa arrives, was all made up. This could ruin the whole Christmas season for children and it will never be as exciting for them as it was before the whole reveal. Children may find out from a third party or through their parents getting bored of the make-believe. Could this affect the trust that exists between child and parent? If adults have been lying about Santa, what else is a lie? Magic? People’s words? Sometimes when we tell kids “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake”, it sounds extremely creepy. I'm pretty sure no kid wants to have to fear that a 200-year-old guy who watches their every move, breaks into their house. It's also kind of dangerous to tell kids about Santa coming into your house. On multiple occasions when I was younger, on Christmas Eve, I would go to sleep, leaving the front door unlocked. I don't have a fireplace and my little mind thought, “Hm, Santa doesn't have our house keys so I’ll leave the door unlocked”. No one ever broke in luckily, but it could have resulted in a very dangerous situation. It's really not a good idea to lie about Santa, but parents still do it anyway. It’s nice and still exciting to believe in Santa and it's fun to do the additional activities to prepare for his “arrival”. Christmas is still an amazing holiday overall even without Santa being stuffed down a chimney and leaving gifts for good children. I loved the idea of Santa as a kid and I really wish he was real in some way. But then again, how else could I still stay up late on Christmas Eve and eat the left-out cookies and milk? Santa’s fake existence may have some consequences, but it does have its perks.
successful advertisement by Coca Cola showing a big bearded old man in a red suit. Overall the meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with Santa, lights, Christmas trees, or presents, what makes Christmas is being together with loved ones and valuing what you have. https://www.happilyfamily.com/tell-yourkids-the-truth-about-santa/
Meaning of Christmas Dayana Ruiz, Staff The true meaning of Christmas can be different for many people. It can vary by their cultures, social beliefs, or religion. The phrase “true meaning of Christmas” began to appear in the mid-19th century, after materialism started to take over family values. Children would base Christmas on the types of presents they got or how many they received, instead of seeing the true meaning behind it--which is the reunion of family members. Christmas can be a time of joy or sadness; it can be sad for those whose family members are no longer with them or are not able to make it, but those who are lucky to have family present should be appreciative with that instead of focusing so much on the material. Christians believe that the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. Others believe that Jesus was not born on Christmas, but we celebrate his coming because his birth was never written in the Bible. However, the idea of Santa Claus comes from a monk named Saint Nick hundreds of years ago. Nicolas was known as the protector of children and sailors, becoming the Patron Saint of Children. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick, which is why they made him the figure for Christmas. Santa's appearance came from a

Christmas Decoration Competitions Kyle Williams, Staff That time of the year is coming around again where everyone looks forward to Christmas and all it includes: Christmas decorations! Some people will put up some simple Christmas lights that just line the roof of the house, and some people are super festive and decide to put up extravagant decorations that cover every square inch of their yard and home inside and out. Then, Christmas morning, people go around voting on each of the houses that are part of the neighborhood competition to see whose house is most festive. It’s a little ridiculous if you ask me-trust me, I wouldn’t want to pay that electric bill. But seeing how much effort people will put into a holiday once a year is really impressive, but it’s just not worth all the putting up and taking down. As it is a contest, there is usually some type of prize involved. The usual prizes are just money or a gift card to somewhere because there really isn’t a National Holiday Decoration Contest; it’s usually just celebrated within a neighborhood or a community. But over the years, it starts to become too much. The
bright lights, the over-the-top decorations, and some even play Christmas music that have lights that go along with the music. I mean, I feel bad for those neighbors across the street that have to deal with it. But if you think about it, it’s kind of a waste of time. People put so much time and effort for 1 day each year, just to take it down a few days later. I mean there are those people that buy those little colorful light projectors you put in your yard, and thank God for them as they aren’t super obnoxious. But to those who go all out, it may be just holiday fun, but in the long run, you look forward to complaints from neighbors and if you have your kids help you, you have kids complaining about how much they have to deal with something they are doing for you and not themselves. Also not to mention how embarrassed those kids must feel when they come over and see all these decorations on the house. There is usually a holiday that everyone looks forward to like Thanksgiving or maybe Halloween, and for a good reason, but to look forward to Christmas just for holiday decorating for a contest that really doesn’t get an actual decent prize or is broadcasted on national TV? That is an unusual reason to look forward to a certain holiday.

Why Funko POP!s are the Best Christmas Gift & Where to Buy Them Jordan Ritchie, Editor-in-Chief One of my biggest dilemmas during the holiday season is trying to pick out Christmas gifts for my friends. I always ask myself the same questions: “What kinds of things are they into again?” “Do they already have this?” “Will they like this?” I know for a fact many people experience the same issue and sometimes they’re able to solve it and pick the perfect gift, but sometimes, we all opt out for the gift card. While everyone loves a good gift card and the freedom to choose one’s own present, there’s something about ripping up that wrapping paper or throwing out the tissue in that bag to find that your friend or loved one knows and cares for you well enough to choose a perfect gift that you really love. A gift that’ll make you really appreciate that person each time you see it. A gift that brings people together, and is both fun and fairly affordable. That gift is a Funko POP!. Funko was founded in 1998 and started making collectible bobbleheads, now called POP! Vinyls. They’re arguably one of the most iconic brands that market pop culture merchandise. The company has made well over 8,000 different figures, and any one of them could be the perfect gift for your friend, family member, or significant other. First of all, they’re affordable. Most figures you can buy for about $10, which is definitely a better deal than a high-value gift card and more thoughtful too. Many older or more common figures you can even get for less than $10. Of course, exclusive or limited-edition characters can be a bit pricier, averaging about $15-$20, but unless you’re looking to purchase rare figures that are running out of stock, you could easily find almost any character for $10-$12 dollars.
Also, they’re great for everybody. “Everyone is a fan of something” is their motto. Though they may seem like a children’s toy, most consumers are actually teens and adults. The brand caters to a lot of older people’s interests as well as kids. There are countless animated Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Stranger Things, video game, and anime characters that have their own POP! figures. Iconic movie and TV characters from the past also are available like Friends and James Bond characters. But Funkos aren’t just for fans of fiction. There are also POP! Vinyls for many celebrities like musical artists and athletes of every generation: Queen, Prince, *NSYNC, Ed Sheeran, BTS, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Curry. Funko POP!s also have an aesthetic appeal. They’re sturdy enough to not topple over and some even come with a small stand. They come in cute 4.5 x 3.5 x 6.25 sized cardboard boxes with a plastic screen in the front and side so you can see the figure clearly if you decide to keep it in the box. The neat squarish shape also makes these easy to gift wrap. They look best displayed on shelves, bookcases, desks, mantles, or really just anywhere in your house like a year-round Elf on The Shelf–there’s a POP! of him too. Once you have one, you’ll want to keep collecting more, and they add so much character to your home or even workspace! Now that I’ve convinced you that Funko POP! Vinyls are the best gift ever, you might be wondering, “How do I get my hands on one?” Well, to answer your question: just about anywhere. You can buy them straight from the website, on Amazon, or at many stores in your neighborhood or mall like Target or Hot Topic. And while these are all great places to shop, there is one place I highly recommend to shop for POP!s: from local independent stores. Your neighborhood comic book or collectibles shop is the best place to buy POP!s. There’s a couple great
places in the Sacramento area, but Big Pop Shop, here in Elk Grove, is my chosen spot. The store specializes in Funko POP!s, so the walls are lined floor to ceiling with them. And they sell the hottest figures for a reasonable price, but they also carry rare POP!s that you can no longer find easily, granted for a higher price, but in my opinion, still a safer option than trying to buy from eBay or another ambiguous online seller whose face nor product you’ve never seen in person. And how can online shopping compare to the vendor-customer relationship that you have when shopping locally? You can find Big Pop Shop on Grant Line, less than 5 miles from our school, and you can follow them on Instagram to get notified on new arrivals and sales. Now, you can save so much time, effort, and money in your gift-buying with Funko POP!s. The holiday spirit is all about happiness and generosity, and what better way to experience that spirit in a material form than opening up a Funko POP! on Christmas morning, especially knowing that the person that got it for you went to a local vendor and chose it out of the hundreds on the shelf, perfectly for you? Well… maybe two Funko POP!s.

A Holly Jolly Sustainable Christmas Selena Enriquez, Staff Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the smell of fresh cut pine diffusing through your home from a great, twinkling American spruce! The white LED lights illuminate a cold room and lit fireplace, but your motherin-law asks, “How gorgeous! Where did you get this tree?” Where did you get this tree? Most of the time when you buy a tree, you don’t know what forest it came from, whether the tree came from a sustainable forestry initiative company or a nursery, whether or not it was taken straight out of the woods, or how old the tree is! Now, I can't give you all the answers as the Christmas tree you take is probably from a different forest than the next guy, but I can help advise your holiday purchasing. Some basic things you should know about the tree you pick is that it should be locally grown. Cutting a tree no matter what will release carbon in one way or another: decomposition or burning, so to limit your carbon footprint it would be a good idea to purchase locally to limit the transportation gas consumption. Check to see if the tree you purchased has any of these certifications: • Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Certified If not, it’s highly likely that the tree you’re purchasing has been unsustainably harvested. You want to invest in nurseries that care about being environmentally friendly and care about meeting the standards of nationwide sustainability. Now one may think plastic trees are great alternatives, but plastic is derived from oil, therefore adding to your carbon footprint permanently. That Christmas tree will never
go away, it’s much better to purchase a live tree as you can compost it every year. As we advance as a society, it’s time we recognize that some of our holiday traditions are actually really bad for the environment. When it comes to plastic, it’s always better to refuse than reuse. Christmas trees are no exception. Happy Holidays, Herd!

Banning Plastic Without Offering Alternatives Isella Nepomuceno, Staff Higher temperatures, drought, rising sea levels; the effects of climate change are undeniable and people across the world are doing things to reverse them. The trend of banning straws for the sake of the turtles faded as quickly as it started up, yet, those were the lengths most people were going to to help the planet. What we fail to acknowledge is the harmful impact that banning plastic without offering alternative solutions will have on underprivileged communities inside and outside of the United States. In Mexico, you can find streets lined with stands that sell food, drinks, and toysall sold in plastic bags. This is not because
they hate the planet or don’t care enough about climate change to use other materials, but because this is what has been made most accessible to them. The business they make from selling snacks in plastic bags or drinks in styrofoam cups is their livelihood and we can’t just take it away from them. By removing the plastic and villainizing the underprivileged communities who use it, we are harming them and their families and reducing their chances of ever making it out of poverty. This attacking the poor who use potentially toxic materials rather than blaming the companies who produce them is rooted in an even bigger issue. If we want to make a genuine difference, we need to take action in a larger way and demand that the companies cease production of their materials if they aren’t sustainable. Additionally, we must also make a conscious effort to switch to affordable natural and sustainable products. If you make people feel guilty, blaming them won’t make any significant change.

Why Pineapples Don’t Belong on Pizza Greg Santos, Staff There is one debate that has ruined friendships, crushed hearts, and made people get slapped in the face. This is: does pineapples belong on pizza? This sweet, yellow, fruit, used as a topping on pizza has
caused massive outrage on social media and everywhere around the world for the past few years. Famous chef Gordon Ramsey once forcefully stated, “You don’t put f**king pineapples on pizza!” This enormously political disagreement has been going on for way too long! This is why pineapple does not deserve the right to be placed on the precious cheese of pizza. There are many different reasons why pineapples just don’t belong on pizza. The Oxford Dictionary defines pizza as, “A dish of Italian Origin, consisting of a flat round base of dough baked with a topping of tomatoes and cheese, typically with added meat, fish, or vegetables.” Guess what isn’t one of those things: pineapple. I would not argue against Oxford Dictionary people if I were you. Furthermore, pizza is meant to be shared amongst multiple people. So why would you throw on such a controversial topping on it? You wouldn’t want to ruin a good day with your friends arguing over such a deep topic when you could’ve avoided the situation in the first place by not placing the pineapples on the pizza. If you didn’t like pineapple and your friend did, then you should be able to just take it out right? Wrong. The pineapple, since it is a fruit and has an evil sweetness, it leaves an everlasting taste on the cheese. Also, Spongebob lives in a pineapple. Spongebob could definitely be at his house while you are eating. How could you truly live with yourself knowing you ate the most famous cartoon character’s house in the past decade? Obviously, everyone is set to have their own opinions on whether or not they believe that pineapple belongs on pizza. For a lot of people, no matter what they see or hear from others, they will continue to stand 10 toes down and think that it does belong on pizza. Well, whatever side you’re on, we can all agree that this is an argument that needs to be settled. Hopefully, this article opened your mind about to side against it, and
maybe even convinced you a little bit that pineapples don’t belong on pizza.
music. To that I say, this just shows how dedicated their fans are because no other group, aside from BTS, have this kind of popularity. If any other group takes this long to come out with music, people would stop supporting them, but since they are still popular even after this, it just shows how much the public favors them. K-Pop History Is Made Yasamine Yusufzai, Copy Editor Blackpink, a very popular musical band (some say, the most popular girl group in the world), has finally had one of their music videos hit one billion views. On YouTube on November 11, 2019, Blackpink’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” song reached a billion streams, making them the first K-pop group for both boy and girl groups to achieve this. They’re also the second K-pop artist to reach this many views with South Korean artist PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video being the first to reach one billion views. It took the girl group seventeen months to accomplish this many views and on the day of the music video’s release, it had ten million views after just six hours. All of their other music videos (including a solo member song and dance practice videos) have over 156 million views on YouTube. Aside from these already being very amazing achievements, what makes it even more interesting is the fact that they have only been around since 2016 and only released four mini albums; I repeat four mini albums. They haven’t even released a full album and yet they’re already this successful in life. Many people criticize them by saying that the only reasons they’re so popular is due to the fact that they take a long time to produce songs and there are so few-their fans have nothing else to do except to stream their

Are Kids Becoming More Spoiled? Ryan O’Sullivan, Staff A lot of members of Generation X claim that in today’s age, young people are a lot more spoiled and entitled than they were. Some claim that this is due to the technological outbreak we have witnessed over the time period of the last 20 years. Kids today may seem lazier from an adult’s perspective, but are they really more spoiled? First, the circumstances of some adolescents around the nation are very different. So these kids might be in a bad situation right now or the opposite and they have an ideal home life. One reason that kids today may seem more spoiled is because they have a lot of access to social media platforms to show everything they have in an attempt to impress their friends. Among all the rise of technology and kids showing what
they have we have seen the beginning of “flex” culture. Flex culture is the attempt to show off the expensive or prized possessions you have in an effort to show how privileged you are. This culture has always been a thing, but they have a bigger platform now that their phones can reach all corners of the earth. However, if the people who were raised in the 60s to 70s had been born today, they would have been just as spoiled with all of the resources we have at our fingertips. I’m sure that back at that time based on what they had, many kids from the 60s and 70s were very spoiled. For example, after WW2 the American economy was at an all-time high, so these children were given a lot more resources than children before the war, this could have led these children to becoming spoiled like they say our generation is. Although some people who lived before the technological outbreak may say that kids are extremely “spoiled” and babied in today’s age, they are wrong. Kids from back then are just as or even more “spoiled”. This is why the amount of “spoiling” between kids in America over time has stayed the same from the 60s to present day.

TMZ: Lord Byron Calvin Wilber, Staff Lord Byron has finally left England and put himself in exile. On this topic, Byron says “‘Tis done,” which really does summarize his business in England and the
finality of his decision to leave. After all of his scandalous relations, no one was totally surprised when the most recent drama surfaced. After marrying Anne Isabella Milbanke, a poor attempt to try and be respectable, he undid any good progress he had made by starting to have an affair with his half-sister, Augusta Leigh. Now, Lord Byron has a long history of scandalous relationships. His relationship with Lady Caroline Lamb ended in her burning an effigy of him, but this one has really crossed the line for many of his fans. He was only married to Anne Isabella Milbanke for a month before this affair with Augusta Leigh started. The newly married couple decided to visit Byron’s half sister and her husband, but her husband was not there for most of the visit. It was at this point the awful affair started. Byron and Augusta spent every night together in the master bedroom leaving Anne alone in the guest bedroom. From here Anne and Byron’s relationship only went more and more downhill until finally Byron fled the country. Byron doesn’t seem to be sad at all about leaving his wife but he definitely seems heartbroken over the loss of his sister. He says that “I should not seek another zone, Because I cannot love but one.” He’s obviously talking about Augusta and he’s heartbroken that he cannot continue his very strange incestual relationship. Now that Byron has turned his attention to Greece and its recent struggles with the Ottoman Empire, we will just have to wait and see what other juicy drama Byron will cause in the near future.

Disney+ and What it Means for Other Subscription Services Benjamin Carrillo, Staff Disney+ has been incredibly successful in sales thus far, with the monopoly that Disney+ already has on the movie industry. The service was announced years ago, and finally seeing it come to life now is very surreal. It surpassed about 10 million downloads in just the first day. Critics have been calling the service a masterpiece and a perfect place for anyone passionate about Disney. Disney+ has something for everyone, including movies like Avatar and High School Musical. Disney+ can mean many things for subscription services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. It’s destined to cause conflicts and possibly take over all of modern television. The immediate danger Disney+ places on other services is taking almost every Disney movie and removing them off Netflix Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and many other subscription services. By doing this, Netflix loses a lot of loyalty and when Netflix loses The Office and Friends the service is going to be very dry in comparison to Disney+. Netflix does have some titles that are worth binging and many entertaining originals, but what can it do when it loses most of its most profitable action? This is a growing issue for many subscriptions services, not just Netflix. Many services are spiraling into obscurity due to the rivalling competition. Not to mention, Disney has bought the right to stream The Simpsons and Avatar on their service. This is the first place where you can watch all of the Simpsons on one platform and enjoy binging it. The roster on Disney+ when compared to Hulu or Amazon Prime Video shows that Disney+ is just a
new force to be reckoned with. The only way to compete with Disney+ is to adapt to your surroundings. Cable TV is becoming more obscure and the idea of paid streaming services is a growing trend. Disney+ has already established itself as a valid subscription service after just a week. The growing empire of Disney is slowly taking over television as well. Subscription services are the new future of television. By stepping their foot into the ring, Disney shows that most companies should take notes on adapting to a growing environment.
