The Free Church moved to the basement of 2516 Durant Avenue, just off of Telegraph Avenue, marked with a sign of a yellow submarine. Access to the sanctuary allowed the ministers to begin Saturday night services. In 1968, the Free Church faced a changing population on Telegraph. Hippies and other transients came and stayed. Political unrest edged closer to violence. Campus activists brought their issues to the street, resulting in police attacking street people. The church responded by following a building oriented model: community center, switchboard, food programs, violence intervention, rock mass and street liturgy, and liberated zone language.
