s surreal as it may seem, 2018 is right around the corner. With the new year comes resolutions, parties, and the highly-anticipated Rose Parade. 2018 celebrates the 129th Rose Parade, and the crowning of the 100th Rose Queen from the seven finalists was an especially exciting milestone.

NEWS pg. 3 The Demise of Coral Reefs: The valuable coral reefs of our oceans are suffering greatly from climate change.

While queens have been crowned since 1905, every so often a year goes by without having crowned a queen at all, or a king instead. The Rose Court itself, however, has had an extensive history in the Rose Parade, having started only 15 years since the Rose Parade’s first inception. But while the numbers may be a bit off, nothing beats the excitement of having an AHS student nominated to the royal court. Last year two AHS students, Maya Khan and Lauren

OPINION pg. 4 Finding Feminism: Blue, pink; sneakers, heels; sports, shopping. Feminism advocates for the inclusion of all. “Then, like lightning, it struck me. How could I be a feminist, which by definition was a person who believes in gender equality and equal opportunities, and always berate and make fun of girls who didn’t have the same interests as I did? That was contradictory of the ideal itself.”

“Emi” Powers, became Rose Princesses. And while people weren’t sure if AHS would have a princess in the court this year (only three AHS students were nominated), on Oct. 2, we got good news. This year, AHS had the privilege of not having just one, but two princesses in the royal court once again. Seniors Lauren Buehner and Sydney Pickering were selected from an incredibly competitive pool of over 1,000 applicants, facing three difficult interviews in front of the

Royal Court Committee members, but stayed strong and ended up coming out on top after displaying impressive poise and voice. Just to give some context as to how difficult it is to become a princess: the very first interview involves standing in front of a panel of five judges, and describing why you want to become a Rose Princess in the first place—in only 15 seconds. As Rose Princesses, Lauren and Sydney have become members of a philanthropic organization dedicated to serving the community. The girls will be volunteering at hospitals and other events all across the country to promote various causes and giving speeches at various volunteer organizations. This year’s Rose Parade theme is “Making a Difference”, a theme that the two girls must, and already do, embody. To Lauren, “Making a difference means creating long-term change…Making a difference also means having an impact on others…I believe that working with others toward longterm goals creates limitless opportunities for improvement, and truly makes a difference.” To Sydney, “Making a difference is about the ability to bring people together through acts of selflessness, kindness, and compassion. It is about giving generously to others and not expecting anything in return. As a princess on the Royal Court, making a difference is about inspiring involvement, joy, and appreciation in community members.” The two girls will be riding on their own float in the 2018 Rose Parade, representing the very best AHS has to offer.
