It was hard for the girls of Varsity Golf to say goodbye to each other. Considering their outstanding performances and countless memories spent upon that idyllic patch of green range, it’s a shame the season ever had to end. Of all six girls on the team, each one managed to make the top 12 in league finals, where they closed with a record of 24-1. Three of these girls finished in the top five overall and qualified for the CIF individuals at Soule Park. Junior Mya Maw finished in second place, sophomore Katherine Guo in fourth, and junior Chi Chi Min in fifth. When asked to reflect on the match, Katherine said, “It was a great experience, and I’m very happy about it.” And Mya agreed when she described the experience as “really shocking.” She added, “To not only place first of my team this year, but to also place second [overall] was astounding.” Shortly afterwards on Nov. 3, Mya qualified for the CIF Individual Finals after competing against 96 of the top golfers in the Southern Section. When asked about her experience, Mya replied, “I was happy to have

cleared the first round and wasn’t expecting to really make the cut for the championships for regional so when I did I was really shocked and excited.” But as impressive as these individuals are, their performance as a team is what makes them uniquely astonishing. For one, the team became the Pacific League Champions for the second year in a row. On top of that, they conquered the CIF Central Division Championship. According to Coach Robert Greep, it was their proudest victory, or to put it in his words, “an early birthday present.” In their moment of triumph, the girls of Varsity Golf had defeated two of the best teams in the Southern Section, Cerritos and Great Oak. Their achievement did not come as a huge surprise considering their overall record was an incredible 29-1. But the game was not just an early birthday gift. The Championship and season in general served as instructive and motivational purposes for the team as well. “This season I have learned that I can and we can,” said Mya. “It [will make] us more confident for next year.” And so for that reason, because there will be a next year, another season, the golfers have no time to rest on their laurels. According to Coach Greep, “The girls will be required

to keep working during the off-season. [For] those girls who do not participate in tournaments and practice, it will be very difficult for them to remain on the team next year.” For seniors Lily Yin and Jacqueline Huang, returning to golf will be difficult, to say the least, as they’ll be moving on to bigger and greater things come next fall. Coach Greep expressed his gratitude for the two girls when he said, “I’m very proud of both of them and all they accomplished while part of the girls golf program.” Not only will the golf team lose two valuable players, but those two players will lose something valuable in their lives as well. Jacqueline said, “Everyone on the team made my years in golf really worthwhile, and I am going to miss that the most.” But with results like these of this past season, Lily and Jacqueline have no reason to fear for the fate of the team they’ll be leaving behind. “Because everyone on the team has great potential and can play to each others’ strengths,” Jacqueline predicted that next year’s team will definitely “have a shot for state finals,” a shot to pick up where this year’s team left off and hopefully travel immeasurably further. rliu@apachepowwow.com
