PLAYING AS ONE UNIT Senior Eden Hardy (#23) receives a pass in the Girls Varsity Soccer game against Hoover on Jan. 17. The girls’ impeccable teamwork has buoyed them to success every season, and this season is no exception. By HOLLY LUNG Staff Writer

G

irls Varsity Soccer is nearly halfway through its season and the girls’ winning streak has yet to be matched. Its League record currently stands at 10-0-0, with no ties or loses—only victories. The girls began their season optimistically, just as any team would heading into a fresh start. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that they still had some work to do. Girls Varsity Soccer has had to adapt to the loss of a number of key players due to various injuries. The gaps on the field left by these players forced the team to substitute them

with different players, including some that were entirely new to the positions they were called to fill. Even with this setback, however, the girls worked hard to adjust to the new dynamic and have even begun to see some great results. But with each passing game and practice, the girls grew stronger and more confident in themselves and one another. This confidence is absolutely necessary, as junior Madison Zordilla explained that “it is apparent that [they] have no problem working together. Just as [they] do on the field, [they] support each other off the field as well. [They’re] family.” This strong connection that Girls Varsity Soccer harbors within its team is just one of its strengths. Another strength lies within its exceptionally talented members. Senior

Allison Hung said that the team has “very, very talented individuals and that is what makes [the team what it is], [the players] all have different styles of play and when [they’re] all on the same page [they] play some pretty dang good soccer.” While the team’s talented individuals are an incredible asset, Allison also revealed that they need to “work on unity and positivity” during games. In order to improve team chemistry and more, the girls have been putting in loads of work to improve nearly every aspect of their game. This work includes adjusting their possession during games and playing small sided games during practice. Not only do these methods help with the team’s fluidity as a unit, but they also help to simplify the game for the players. Madison also asserted that “when [they] relax and simplify the game, it

comes naturally.” Girls Varsity Soccer’s second game against Burroughs on Jan. 27 (which Arcadia won 7-0) was proof of how the girls have polished their game over the course of the season. “The first time we played Burroughs, we were off our game, and Burroughs capitalized on our mistakes,” said senior Kaylin Pascasio, reflecting on that narrower victory of 2-1. “But I think this time around we went in knowing what our goal was.” (Every game, the team aims to make at least three goals.) “We went in strong, we had really good communication and energy on the field, and I think that really paid off in the end.” Girls Varsity Soccer has been working extremely hard to keep up its record while also keeping its eyes toward the future—and having lots of fun while doing it. The best part of soccer season, Kaylin said, is “the relationships we all have, on and off the field. You can see that we all have a lot of chemistry on the field, but that comes from all the bonding we do off the field.” In a sport where teamwork is key, whether they’re laughing off the field or keeping in-sync on the field, the girls’ tight bond only strengthens them; they are family after all. hlung@apachepowwow.com Photo by BRANDON CHEN
