Nonprofit opens doors for fermentation sciences students Nora Smith | Reporter

While education majors drive to schools around the region for student teaching, and nursing majors commute to hospitals around the state for their clinicals, nonprofit brewery Ivory Tower is helping fermentation sciences students gain professional experience in their field while at App State.

“One of the great things about the (fermentation sciences) program is that it teaches a lot of the background knowledge to troubleshoot issues that you would find in the beverage industry, but it does lack a little bit of handson experience,” said Garrett Williams, Booneshine head brewer and fermentation sciences graduate.

Ivory Tower, a private 501(c)(3), was founded in 2012, around the same time the fermentation sciences department became a degree-granting pro-

gram. The nonprofit cannot be affiliated with the state-funded university because it sells alcohol, but it serves “to support research and education in fermentation sciences in general, and more specifically for our program at the university,” said Brett Taubman, director of the fermentation sciences department and president of Ivory Tower.

Ivory Tower provides grants to students in the fermentation sciences program to aid in their education and research.

Grants from the nonprofit fund more than researching wine and beer — one student used the funds to study hop aroma chemistry. Another is studying how different food fermentations affect the genetic fingerprinting of ecosystems.

For students who don’t receive

research grants, like sophomore Bill Gilmer, Ivory Tower’s connection with local breweries provides an avenue for internships and work experience. Gilmer interned with Booneshine Brewing Co. during the summer, where he applied classroom lessons to cleaning kegs, mashing wheat and canning the final product.

“I think it helps to not only have the knowledge but have a small bit of experience to accompany it,” Gilmer said. “In my opinion, you can read a book and learn how to do something, but until you actually do it, you don’t have the appreciation or you may not fully grasp how to do it.”

During his internship, Gilmer helped the Booneshine brewers lead fellow students during Ivory Tower “brew days.” Brew days allow students

to create a beer from start to finish with the help of Taubman and local master brewers. Most brew days take place at Booneshine, where Ivory Tower houses its fermenter, but the nonprofit also partners with Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Lost Province Brewing Co. Although students execute the brewing process, Taubman works with brewery owners to come up with recipes that will work in their facilities.

For example, he took inspiration for the Black Saturday beer from his wife’s chocolate rye cookies. Other university-themed beers Ivory Tower has produced include Really Bitter Faculty, an American IPA, Afermentive Action, an American brown ale, and All Nighter, an American stout.

Because not all areas of fermentation sciences study brewing, Taubman said Ivory Tower is looking to expand beyond alcohol with food fermentation.

“We’d like to start with fermented hot sauces because we feel like that’s a good, easy avenue into that industry that people love,” Taubman said.

Before Ivory Tower can get its hot sauce into the marketplace, it’s looking for local restaurants to provide com-

mercial kitchen space for the fermentation process. Taubman acknowledged it is no coincidence that working with food rather than alcohol would provide greater potential for entrepreneurial opportunities with the university.

“It’s definitely cleaner when it doesn’t involve alcohol,” Taubman said. “There are still a number of hurdles, safety issues and so forth that you have to do when you’re working in the food industry, especially fermented foods.”

Until then, Ivory Tower will rely on beer profits and the High Country Beer Fest to support student research grants. The HCBF is Ivory Tower’s largest revenue generator, and both executive boards are made up of multiple fermentation sciences professors. The event is also largely put on by student volunteers from the department.

“I think it’s a really positive, really crucial thing to start getting experience,” Gilmer said. “Being afforded the opportunity of going ahead and getting to see what happens on the inside and getting to be a part of it, seeing how actually the rest of your life will look, I think is really valuable.”

Watauga County elections certified by board of elections

Dustin Hicks, Loretta Clawson and Nancy LaPlaca can officially join the Boone Town Council.

These names are a shift from previous unofficial results, which showed Virginia Roseman winning the election instead of LaPlaca.

Nov. 15 at 11 a.m., Watauga County Board of Elections board members and office staff certified elections for Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and Seven Devils.

Matt Snyder, director of the board of elections, said this year’s election ran smoothly. He said poll workers did a great job, and the officials’ recordings of names and votes matched the computers.

“We didn’t have any delays at any of the one-stop sites or any of the election day precincts. They were up and running for the entire

time without any issues. And (there were) no big election related issues or questions about validity or accuracy (of votes cast),” Snyder said.

assistant for the board of elections who oversees campaign finance, registration and absentee by mail voting, said she agreed that the elections ran smoothly.

“This one was just a very smooth election,” Houck said.

Marv Williamsen, secretary of the board of elections and former associate vice chancellor for international programs at App State, said the board prepared its staff and volunteers well by looking and preparing for problems in advance.

“This is a well-oiled, smooth machine, and the payoff is that on election day, when things can go wrong, people are prepared,” Williamsen said. “In our country and this day and age, we have to be prepared for all kinds of exotic developments.”

Williamsen also said he is glad to see so many students engaged in the voting process.

“For the first time you (vote), you know, you’re 18, you go through

that process, you don’t have any guidance or parents holding your hand through the process; it’s easy to make a mistake,” Williamsen said. “For students to take the time and pay attention and get registered correctly, that’s really an important preparation for life.”

Snyder said he encourages people to check their registration for next year’s election and come to the board of elections office, located in the courthouse, or look online if they have questions.

Snyder also said anyone interested in volunteering during next year’s elections should contact the board of elections offices.

“I have one command: vote,” Williamsen said.

The new members will be sworn in in December.

JB Byrch said he wants the children in the program to value their diversity. He wants them to know it’s special.

“God made them different, and it’s beautiful. It’s not ugly, it’s not less than, it’s not small, it’s diverse,” JB

Byrch said. “You have gifts that other people don’t have. You have advantages that other people don’t have because of who you are.”

He said their goal is to make children understand that although they may look different and have “brown hair, brown skin and brown eyes,” they too can be successful.

Laura Byrch said the first mentor for the program, Juan Sanchez, was in HSA, and she still sees him talking to the children.

“I felt it was important to participate, as all my life, I felt like I never had a role model that looked like me, never any Hispanic role models or anyone close to me or my family that went to college,” Sanchez said.

The Byrches said it’s important to continue celebrating leaders of color, particularly Latinx leaders, so children everywhere can look around and say, “We’re having leaders who look like us.”

More than 10 years ago, an App State student said he felt the “calling of God” to do something positive in his community. On Nov. 11, he and his wife acted on that call.

JB and Laura Byrch started Boys and Girls Nights in 2010 to positively impact their community and children from Bradford Mobile Homes Park, located off Bamboo Road near U.S. Route 221. The newest part of the program includes bringing the children on campus to be around those with similar identities as them.

JB Byrch is the boys night program coordinator, and Laura Byrch is the pastor of community engagement at Boone United Methodist Church.

The boys from the trailer park meet every Sunday and Thursday and the girls meet every Monday. Their nights include playing games, watching movies, bowling, playing basketball and dancing.

Laura Byrch said with this program, they’re trying to “create another narrative” and celebrate the children and where they come from.

JB Byrch said he met Emily Foycie during his time as an App State student. She ran a children’s ministry in the trailer park through Mount Vernon Baptist.

JB Byrch said at the time, it was only girls getting together, so Foycie suggested he try and put something together for the boys who lived there because some of their dads weren’t around or not positive influences, so the boys constantly got into trouble.

After that conversation, JB Byrch said he and his friend walked around the trailer park and “just knocked on doors” to try to get boys to come and play basketball with them.

JB Byrch said he and some of the children played basketball once a week for an hour. He said over time they began to meet more often and longer.

The Byrches said they have found the children look up to Hispanic Student Association students and connect with them because they’re encouraged to see someone they can relate to.

JB Byrch said when the children think of the phrase “college kids,” they imagine “wealthy white kids.” He

doesn’t believe all college kids are like that.

He said a huge part of why he and his wife have this program is because they want to decenter whiteness and lift up “latinidad.”

“Decentering whiteness means acknowledging that whiteness does not have the power to decide what is normal, good or beautiful. It’s going out of our way to defy the single story we often hear about Latinx culture and see

App State Child Development Center expansion could allow 50 more children to enroll

The App State Child Development Center, a facility that provides child care for App State students, faculty and staff, is expanding.

Moriah Stegall, director of the CDC, said the main goal of the expansion is to make affordable, high-quality child care available to more members of the App State community.

The CDC, which operates under the Division of Student Affairs, currently serves 68 children and has nearly 100 children and families on its waitlist. The expansion will allow the center to accommodate an additional 40-50 children.

According to App State’s Building Physical Infrastructure website, App State plans to add a 3,000-square-foot, prefabricated building with a fixed foundation to

the existing site on Poplar Grove Road and renovate the existing building. The expansion, which is expected to finish in fall 2020, will also include a new drop-off area, parking, sidewalks and an exterior playground.

One of the few people to make it off the waitlist was Kathryn Webb Farley, Master of Public Administration director and assistant professor at App State.

Webb Farley has a 16-monthold son enrolled at CDC. She was on the waitlist six months before he was born and remained on the list until a spot opened up in August.

Webb Farley said she was “overwhelmed with joy” when she found out her son was taken off the waitlist.

“I think you always want the best for your kid, and so personally,

I wanted to send him there because I knew they offered one of the best centers in the area, if not the best,” Webb Farley said.

The expansion will not only allow the CDC to serve more families but will also include more classrooms as well as hiring additional “educated and really competent” teachers, Stegall said.

As a parent, Webb Farley said she hopes the expansion will give children more “play-to-learn” opportunities and outdoor spaces.

“We work(ed) with our design and construction team, and we have an outside design firm that’s been helping us look at locations and various building models to, one, make sure what we’re doing is really going to be great for the kids and families and, two, help us make sure we are

getting the best bang for our buck, and so we’ve been hard at work planning for quite some time,” Stegall said.

The UNC board of governors approved a budget of $2.57 million for the project. The center’s operations are funded by a “sliding scale of fees based on the income of the parents and families of the children,” according to App State’s Building Physical Infrastructure website.

Stegall said she is “thrilled” the chancellor is committing to additional high quality child care for App State.

“Even with an expansion, even if we clear off our waitlist, there would still be a whole slew of babies waiting to get in the next year,” Stegall said.

“In the short term, the removal of part of the track and the full removal has meant the coaches and athletes have had to make adjustments in training plans,” said Michael Curcio, cross country head coach and track and field associate head coach.

“We’ve had to become more creative. It’s challenging, but those challenges have forced the athletes and coaches to be very intentional in our planning.”

The $15.5 million purchase, the facilities of which were approved by the UNC board of governors in March, makes room for further construction off campus.

The university track and field, softball and competition tennis facilities will relocate to the newly-pur-

sity-level, competition-grade venues for the App State track and field, softball, and tennis teams.

The university requested Boone Town Council and the Boone Planning Commission to rezone another part of the property for educational without residential purposes, meaning dorms cannot be built on the space.

The project is in the design phase with CHA Consulting Inc. of Raleigh. It will be completed in phases, with the track taking priority.

In addition to the track, tennis facilities will include six indoor and six outdoor courts, and softball will include seating for 100 to 150 spectators.

“The new track facility will give the team a track that is designed specifically for the sport. We won’t have to make as many adjustments,” Curcio said. “Athletes and coaches can set up practice times that can fit every event, group and individual. Coaches might be busy, but the athletes will have more flexibility in setting their

class schedules.”

Until new tennis courts are complete, App State’s varsity tennis teams will continue to use the Rivers Street courts. The courts were resurfaced this fall and continue to serve their purpose for physical education classes in addition to University Recreation.

The App State track and field team will not host any meets in 2019 because of the removal of the Ike Belk track before the new one is complete.

“There are a lot of options for the use of the App (State) 105 property,” Curcio said. “I’m sure the administration will find some complementary and shared uses for the whole property. We know we will have a dedicated track and field facility in the near future.”

Other developments have included student residence halls, a day care facility or student recreation fields.

Currently, the goal is for completion of the new track by spring 2020.

Aerial photographer sees Boone landscape from different point of view Laura Boaggio | Reporter When an App State alumnus off-handedly Googled “cool go-pro mounts” to look for new ways to capture snowboarding camera shots, the top result was a man using a DJI Phantom I, one of the first commercial drones available.

Jordan Nelson saw the video and was inspired to open his first credit card account to purchase his own drone for photography.

“A few people said I should make a Facebook page just for the aerial photos I took, so I did that,” Nelson said.

The hobby quickly turned into a business for Nelson, and clients primarily found him through word of mouth.

Nelson, who graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in geology, is the founder of Nelson Aerial Productions, a Boone-based aerial cinematography and photography company. The company was one of the first in the country to pass the Part 107 written exam for commercial drone usage when it started six years ago.

The Part 107 exam ensures that people who fly drones for business have an educated background in drone and airspace safety.

Currently, Nelson Aerial Productions has flown around 2,737 flights and has almost 10 million views on YouTube.

Nelson has traveled across the United States

to work on different projects for his company.

“My most recent long distance job was about two weeks ago in Pennsylvania,” Nelson said. “It was a small town on the Susquehanna River — an old coal plant that was being imploded.”

At the time the plant was built in 1948-49, it was the world’s largest coal power plant, Nelson said. Phase One of the implosion happened Oct. 25, and the second phase is scheduled for the spring.

Nelson said implosions are his favorite to capture — he has shot 15 across the East Coast.

Winkler Residence Hall in June 2014 was his first building implosion, which he said is memorable to him.

“It’s pretty cool to get paid to film something that is so exciting and fun to see,” Nelson said.

Nelson has also photographed App State volleyball, wrestling, baseball and aerial images of the university on his own time. He said Boone is a unique area to shoot because it is photogenic in every season, unlike other landscapes around the country.

“Every direction you look, even on the ground, is photo-worthy,” Nelson said. “When you get in the sky, it’s the same thing — there’s so many places to film and capture.”

Austin “Billy” Juno Georgia Privott | Reporter Austin “Billy” Juno goes beyond what his clothing brand Juno Studios looks like. He dives into the story behind each collection, the ethics in the fashion industry and his audience’s emotions.

The senior apparel design major said he appreciates the process of making a garment and has found his passion in creating his own.

“I appreciate a well-tailored suit or well-cut dress because not everyone knows it. I think it’s the same with high or modern art.

Somebody who’s not educated on that artist might look at that painting and think it is terrible, but someone who’s educated on it will think it is incredible,” Juno said.

Juno applied this consideration with his collections, “Space Outsider” and “Made in.” He is currently working on a third collection.

“Space Outsider’s (inspiration) came from rural America because I felt like an outsider when I was growing up. I had all these things that made me who I am, and they probably shouldn’t work together, but they do,” Juno said.

Juno said the “Space Outsider” collection was a combination of metallic and futuristic themes, with aspects of rural life.

His most recent collection, “Made in,” had a different and more jarring impact on his audience by throwing fake blood on models as they walked down the runway.

“It was meant to be very uncomfortable because it was about sweatshops and factory workers in the fashion industry. I wanted people to crawl in their skin so it would stick with them,” Juno said. “The music and the film was very graphic. It was meant for people to see this gruesome thing that is happening and feel emotion for it.”

Juno said he loves putting on his own fashion shows because he is able to control the environment that the audience experiences.

After interning this summer for sustainable fashion company Jussara Lee, Juno began changing the way he made his clothing.

“I am using all organic cotton for my upcoming collection. Anything I use is going to either be organically grown or recycled. I’m actually working with a billboard company, and I get their old billboard scrap,” Juno said.

In his upcoming collection, Juno is taking inspiration from pieces he already owns and creating something based on their looks. The collection will also be environmentally friendly and contain pieces for daily life.

“As I mature and grow into who I am, my work is also doing that. It’s an extension of what point I’m at in life. I think that is when work is really authentic,” Juno said.

Creative writing professor awarded second Fulbright scholarship Ethan Murphy | Reporter

Movie Review Doctor Sleep Graphic by Efrain Arias-Medina Jr.

Ebony Foster | Columnist Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep” brilliantly combines the aesthetics of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” with Flanagan’s signature style.

The film adapts Stephen King’s sinister sequel and balances King’s version with Kubrick’s 1980 story.

The film’s story centers on an older, alcoholic Danny Torrence, expertly played by Ewan McGregor, who uses alcohol to cope with his traumatic experience at the Overlook Hotel and his ability to “shine,” a rare psychic skill.

Years later, when Torrence is getting his life together, he encounters a young girl named Abra, played by Kyliegh Curran, who is also able to shine.

Rose the Hat, played by Rebecca Ferguson, notices Abra’s ability when she witnesses Rose and others from True Knot, an ancient cult, brutally murder someone. The cult feeds on the essence of children who shine to maintain immortality. This disturbing scene motivates Torrence and Abra to team up to take down the True Knot.

All of the performances in “Doctor Sleep” were impressive, but the most notable were the children who used their innocence and fear during unforgettably visceral scenes. McGregor brilliantly portrays an older Danny while maintaining the soft vulnerability viewers saw in his younger counterpart.

But, any film’s heroes are only as effective as its villains, and thankfully, Ferguson and Zahn McClarnon deliver. Ferguson and McClarnon pull off an eerie kindness while flipping into the vampiric nature of the True Knot

leaders with horrific ease.

The film’s musical and visual elements deliver simple, yet effective, additions that help maintain the film’s tension. The film’s soundtrack pays homage to the original score from “The Shining”, which establishes its presence during signature moments. The score brings feelings of nostalgia for fans while still having an undertone of the present within its composition.

The sound of the heartbeat from the original film fulfills an alternative purpose in the context of the new film. In “The Shining,” the heartbeat signifies that the hotel itself is alive; whereas, in “Doctor Sleep,” the heartbeat signals the shining ability and the life it is tied to.

However, similar to its predecessor, the heartbeat is still a signal to the audience that danger is near, adding to the film’s overall tension.

“Doctor Sleep” is a well-crafted conclusion to “The Shining” and is dark and engaging, pulling off what most horror sequels have failed at — especially when it comes to King’s work — creating a satisfying ending. Flanagan brilliantly crafts a movie that does not shy away from disturbing viewers while successfully pulling off a seamless sequel to Kubrick’s film.

Needless to say, this film is definitely recommended not only to fans of “The Shining” but also to thriller and horror fans everywhere who feed off the tension and fear that “Doctor Sleep” delivers.

Mountains and tightknit communities close the similarities between Appalachia and Romania. From its folklore and dance to old world architecture, the Eastern European nation has its own world of experiences.

Mark Powell, an associate creative writing professor at App State, received a grant from the Fulbright Scholar Program to teach American literature in Romania. This award marks Powell’s second grant from the program; he received the first in 2014 to teach American literature in Slovakia.

Senator J. William Fulbright founded the Fulbright Scholar Program in 1946 to encourage global communication and understanding.

The program grants thousands of students and teachers international opportunities every year. According to its website, the program offers over 470 teaching and research positions in 125 countries every year. The subject matter ranges from art and literature to science and mathematics.

“To me, it’s just the best use of money for the government. (Slovakia is) one of the last places in Europe that isn’t really Westernized, which is what makes it so interesting,” Powell said. “I think a country’s stories are important in how we understand a country. I mean, it’s one thing to read it in the history books, but you really gain a surer understanding of people by the stories they tell.”

Powell said broad cultural exchange is important to understanding one another, and his traveling has provided an outside perspective of how the United States appears.

“In many parts of the world, we’ve come to be viewed in a monolithically negative way, but I think the important thing is to understand the nuances of American culture,” Powell said. “If you were to read our poetry or our books, then you would have a better understanding of who we are in our everyday lives.”

The trip to Romania will be his first, and Powell said he thought experiencing a new culture is what he needs.

“I’m really looking forward to being in a different kind of world. It’s kind of like a frontier in its own way, and I’m curious to see how the society is similar to our own despite cultural differences,” Powell said.

With five novels already published and another one set for 2020, Powell said he hopes to use this experience to help improve his writing.

“I think it’s going to make me adjust things on the fly more, and that’s what’s really cool about seeing different cultures like this.

The larger point is putting yourself in a place where you’re uncomfortable,” Powell said.

“He was my first ever creative writing professor, and he’s really nurturing while still being helpful,” Blandford said. “He would hand out short stories and have us write our own based on key aspects of the story, like a pivotal moment or the style used. It was exercises like that that got everyone really in a creative mindset.”

Originally from Mountain Rest in Southern Appalachia, Powell said growing up in the South has influenced his perspective on travel and experiencing new things.

“I’m sure everything I’ve experienced has put things through a certain lens. Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know, but I think this is part of what makes Eastern Europe so interesting to me is the family-oriented society,” Powell said.

The Bobcats rank eighth out of 10 in the Sun Belt in total defense and ninth in scoring offense, with an average of 18.7 points per game. The Mountaineers are first in total defense and second in scoring offense, averaging 38.4 points per game. App State should be able to take care of business in front of its home crowd.

The Mountaineers are 4-0 all-time against the Bobcats. With each of the teams’ seasons so far, don’t expect this streak to end on Saturday. App State has two wins over Power Five schools and has reached uncharted territories in the Sun Belt by reaching as high as No. 21 in the AP poll and receiving a No. 25 rank in the College Football Playoff poll. Texas State hasn’t won more than three games in a season since 2014.

Coming off of one of their best performances of the season against a shaky Georgia State defense, the Mountaineer offense has another opportunity against a defensively weak opponent. Texas State gave up 63 points in its last game, a 63-27 home loss to Troy. Aside from scoring the second fewest points per game in the conference, the Bobcats also have the league’s worst turnover margin and red zone offense.

App State has a chance to put up a lot of points and not allow very many in front of its home fans for the last time in the 2019 regular season.

App State is first in the Sun Belt East with a 5-1 record.

Georgia Southern, the only team to beat the Mountaineers this season, is second in the division at 4-2. In the West, Louisiana is first at 5-1. If both the Mountaineers and Ragin’ Cajuns win their final two Sun Belt games, the Sun Belt Championship would be held in Boone between the two, because of App State’s head-to-head win over Louisiana.

Zack Antrum | Reporter Since arriving on the hoop scene in 2017, Justin Forrest has added his name to the top of opposing scouting reports across the Sun Belt and the rest of the country.

The junior guard from Decatur, Georgia has emerged as a team leader both on and off the court and is poised for a big 2019-2020 campaign.

Forrest enjoyed a decorated prep career in which he was a two-time high school state champion before arriving in the High Country. He also played on the AAU circuit and was coached by his dad, James, who played four years at Georgia Tech.

As a freshman, Forrest wasted no time, scoring 32 points against Iowa State in just his third collegiate game and his first Division 1 opponent. Five days later, Forrest dropped a career-high 36 points on 7-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc against James Madison.

This wasn’t a case of beginner’s luck either. He finished the season second in scoring on the team with 13.5 points per game. Forrest reached double figures scoring in 25 out of 30 games as a freshman.

After a strong debut season, Forrest returned and formed one of the best-scoring back courts in the Sun Belt alongside former App State guard Ronshad Shabazz.

As a sophomore, Forrest was second on the team in scoring again, posting 16.2 points per game. He also increased his assist total and improved his 3-point shooting percentage.

Forrest got off to an impressive start to his junior year by putting up 27 points in App State’s season opener against Michigan. Through five games, Forrest leads the team with an average of 21.7 points per game.

“I elevated my game and stayed in the gym all summer and did everything I had to do,” Forrest said. “I just have to lead these guys to victory and make sure (we) stay on course and handle business.”

Forrest now has an opportunity to lead a team undergoing a big shift with new head coach Dustin Kerns and his staff.

To do this, Forrest said he knows he must be a leader off the court just as much as on the court.

“Just taking on a leadership role (is important) and trying to get these younger guys going,” Forrest said.

“I’m one of the top returners on the team, so I just need to help these guys come along.”

In order for coach Kerns and the Mountaineers to end their NCAA tournament drought, they’ll need big minutes and big leadership from Forrest.

The Mountaineers’ men’s soccer team flew a little under the campus radar this season amidst the excitement surrounding the football team. But, the team quietly posted its best record since 2008, going 11-71, including an appearance in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament, which was hosted at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone.

Mountaineer nation needs to be ready to pay attention to men’s soccer in 2020 because I think it’s poised to break out. The team has improved every season under fourth-year head coach Jason O’Keefe, and this is the first time men’s soccer has produced backto-back winning seasons since 2011-12. They also appeared in the semi-finals on the Sun Belt Tournament, the furthest they’ve gone since O’Keefe took over the program.

The Mountaineers will have a host of talent coming back to lead the team from where they’ve left off in 2019. The most notable of these include junior defender Zeiko Harris and sophomore forward Camden Holbrook, who finished the season ranked fifth in the Sun Belt in game-winning goals. Harris was also named defensive player of the year for the Sun Belt in 2019. Sophomore midfielder Alex Hernandez, who led the Mountaineers in goals scored, will also return next season.

While their Sun Belt position leaves a bit to be desired, improvement there will come naturally once they’ve put all the pieces together. The team posted a solid overall record after a tough schedule that included a match with No. 19 Penn State and a road win against UNC, the first victory over the Tar Heels since 1980. If the Mountaineers can compete with national powers like these, they can compete with anybody.

Reminders of a past we cannot escape Tommy Mozier | Opinion Editor Every week as a child, my mother drove my sister and I from our house outside Chapel Hill to our friend’s house south of Pittsboro. The pleasant drive through the North Carolina countryside included passing through downtown Pittsboro, with its unique shops, the imposing Chatham County courthouse and, in the town’s center, a marble pedestal with a bronze figure on top with the words “Our Confederate Heroes” engraved on the front.

The statue is a place of honor for an unnamed Confederate soldier and an unmistakable reminder to every Southerner of our shameful history.

On Nov. 13, a judge ruled the statue, unveiled in 1907, could be removed. The Saturday after, protesters and counter-protesters clashed around the statue, resulting in several arrests. This, of course, comes after protests of Silent Sam, the Confederate statue on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus.

Removing Confederate monuments is decried by many as removing history, a reasonable reaction until one realizes history books and museums exist.

As historian Jon Meacham argues, the history of the United States is constantly reckoning between quoting our founding principles and actually living up to them. We have never lived up to our founding principles, but we progress closer with every breakthrough.

However, every period of social upheaval is met with racist and sexist backlash. Confederate monuments are symbols of that backlash. The overwhelming majority were built during two periods of social upheaval and backlash: the early 20th century and during the 1950s and 60s.

The early 1900s saw women’s suffrage and W.E.B. Du Bois’ Niagara Movement, which led to the NAACP’s founding. In response, D.W. Griffith produced “Birth of a Nation,” a movie which heavily influenced the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan and further embolden terrorism against blacks in the South.

Fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was lynched in 1955, one year after the Supreme Court ordered schools’ integration. His memorial in Mississippi needs a bulletproof casing. Enough said.

Coinciding with all of this, monuments to the Confederacy’s racist “Lost Cause” appeared throughout the South, including in Pittsboro and Chapel Hill.

As Americans and as Southerners, we cannot erase our painful shared history and pretend the country has moved past our racist roots, nor can we glorify it on pedestals. Confederate monuments have always been symbols of racism pretending to be symbols of heritage and pride.

Monuments remind us that after more than 150 years, many Southerners still refuse to recognize our racist past. Each monument should be treated as a historical artifact, a reminder of where the South has been, and the work still to be done. They should not be in a place of honor.

Believe it or not, journalists are human. Journalists, young and old, make mistakes. The mistakes a journalist makes can range from a tiny misspelling or a huge fact error. Either way, mistakes are mistakes, and humans will make them.

But, the key for journalists, especially student journalists, is to learn. The Appalachian, just like many other student news organizations, has tried to learn from our mistakes. That does not mean we won’t make more in the future.

Some mistakes can bring national attention, and not the good kind.

Student editors at The Daily Northwestern did something that is significant in journalism.

They apologized.

This apology wasn’t for a small fact error or misspelling a name. Their apology was for coverage of a protest at a speaking event of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The editors at Northwestern University’s student-run newspaper apologized for publishing photos of protesters, who were protesting in public. They also apologized for reporters using the Northwestern directory to obtain phone numbers to contact students about interviews. This is basic news gathering process that journalists all over the world do on a daily basis. They should not have apologized for reporters doing their jobs.

The editorial received so much attention that editorials ran in the Washington Post and the New York Times questioning the apology. It also received backlash from many journalists on social media.

Many of the comments on Twitter attacked the editors of the paper for apologizing. Some called for them to resign immediately. Alumni said they were embarrassed. Others even said they should never be hired as journalists.

While I do not think they should have released the editorial, they do not deserve the severe backlash they received.

One goes to college to learn. No one is perfect, and student journalists are far from perfect.

Simply being one is hard.

Student journalists are, first and foremost, students. Most take 15-18 hours of classes a week.

Editors work tirelessly to get a paper out and make sure the campus is getting covered. Reporters, many of who are unpaid, work on deadline while dealing with all the homework and projects that come with college.

Medill School of Journalism Dean Charles Whitaker said it best in a nearly 1,300 word statement addressing the editorial: “Have they made mistakes? Most assuredly. They are students learning the craft. But I firmly maintain that our students do not act with malice aforethought.

By and large, they want to do the right thing and reflect the community accurately.”

The Daily Northwestern editors did deserve some of the backlash so they could understand their mistake; I am not arguing that.

But in a time when journalism is under attack from the most powerful man in the world, going into the field is already hard enough. Professional journalists should offer help and advice to student journalists, not tear them down for their mistakes.
