AppCards approved as voter ID

tudents and employees registered to vote in North Carolina can use their AppCards as valid voter ID in the 2020 elections.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections approved both student and employee AppCards on March 15 after Chancellor Sheri Everts submitted letters seeking approval to use AppCards as a form of voter ID on March 13.

“I was just so thankful, not just for the State Board of Elections, but really to Chancellor Everts for signing the form and doing the proper paperwork,” freshman political science major Emily Hogan said. “Since she’s become our chancellor, she’s always stood up for students’ right to vote.”

Hogan, a Student Government Association senator, sponsored an SGA bill urging Everts to sign the

Student Identification Attestation Form.

App State was one of five UNC System Schools to have employee and student IDs approved. The others include North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, Elizabeth City State University and UNC-Asheville.

“It’s really sad the amount of schools that weren’t eligible,” Hogan said. “This fight isn’t over.

Now we have to worry about getting our cards approved again because we have to re-sign the form in 2021 and for that we actually have to have expiration dates on our IDs.” Some of the main requirements for student IDs under the Voter ID law include a photo taken by the school or contractor and that the ID was issued after student Social Security numbers, citizenship status, birthdates and other identifying

information was confirmed.

Of the 81 institutions to apply for approval, 13 had student, employee or both forms of ID rejected.

“The Appalachian Community places enormous value on the civic engagement of our faculty, staff and students,” Chancellor Everts wrote in a newsletter. “I appreciate the hard work of our campus staff who have been diligently working on this process.”

he Watauga County Board of Elections tabled a vote 4-1 to move the same-day polling place from Legends to Plemmons Student Union on March 12.

Matthew Snyder, director of elections for Watauga County, said the motion was tabled because the state has not released the layout of the election precincts.

“The board has tabled it until we get that information back from the state saying, ‘Hey, this is the new state layout for the precincts,’ and then to see how that fits in with what they want to do,” Snyder said.

Eric Eller, a Republican who was appointed to the board on March 7,

said he did not understand the need to move polling places because it would waste time and money.

“It makes no sense to tell 7,600 people: This is where your voting place will be, but you won’t be able to cast a vote there because the state is going to move it,” Eller said during the meeting.

Board of Elections Chair Jane Hodges said she was against the motion to table the vote. She felt that if the board had voted to move the polling place, the state would keep the voting place in the student union due to the large number of student and faculty votes.

Snyder said the board will not receive the precinct layouts from the state until May.

Students partner with Habitat for Humanity to build home for family in need Erin O’Neill ‫@ ׀‬erinmoneill ‫ ׀‬News Reporter

atauga County Habitat for Humanity and App State are chipping away at homelessness in the High Country by building a home for a family in need with App Builds a Home.

App Builds a Home is a partnership between App State’s oncampus Habitat for Humanity club and Watauga County Habitat for Humanity. It plans to build one home for a family in the Watauga Habitat for Humanity housing community, GreenWood.

App Builds a Home works closely with the Integrated Design Experience Laboratory in the building sciences program on the project.

“Every year the Integrated Design Experience Laboratory is given a project that is locally based either through the community, through the university or a nonprofit,” senior

building sciences major Christian Bocchino said.

Community projects, like App Builds a Home, give students in the building sciences program “a little bit of an outreach into the real world,” Bocchino said.

Bocchino said the students want to design a sustainable and ecofriendly home.

“We’re not only trying to build our way into the community, but we’re trying to have a good footprint when we do it, which I think is something not a lot of people think about when you think of construction,” Bocchino said.

Bocchino said part of a “good footprint” is considering site organization, how building materials are reused and how they can reduce waste on the construction site.

“It’s a really awesome opportunity because it’s student design, which is something we really wanted to

happen,” Habitat for Humanity Club president and sophomore interior design major Kayla McDougle said.

Reading education graduate student Megan Laws works closely with the Habitat club president and said App Builds a Home “is the whole university coming together to do all three parts: design, build and fund the home.”

Laws also emphasized the importance of the project because Boone and Watauga County lack affordable housing options, and the available affordable options aren’t “very nice.”

McDougle explained that people don’t need to travel far from App State’s campus to see poverty in Watauga County.

“You can see the poverty that is all throughout this county and so I think it’s super important not just to provide another family with affordable housing

that they need, but also with housing that is safe and healthy,” McDougle said.

McDougle said App Builds a Home helps students get involved with their campus and the community.

“We like to think of it as giving back to this really amazing town that has welcomed all of these students,” McDougle said.

The estimated cost to build the home is $120,000, which is more expensive than a typical Habitat house, Laws said.

“Building costs here are higher than other places and Watauga Habitat tries to be very efficient with their homes,” Laws said.

McDougle said the project is a “half-and-half house,” meaning that Watauga Habitat and App State will each contribute $60,000, but she thinks the App State community “can do so much more.”

McDougle said “anybody and everybody” can fundraise for the home through personal donations, fundraisers and attending events on campus that benefit App Builds a Home.

McDougle said Habitat has raised money through Polar Plunge, Pet a Puppy and round-up campaigns in Crossroads, Wired Scholar and Stick Boy Bread Company. Habitat has raised $3,457 of the $60,000 goal.

Building will start in the summer with foundation work, and the framing of the house will start in the fall, McDougle said. The organization expects to complete the home in fall 2019 or spring 2020.

McDougle also said she feels App Builds a Home makes students aware of housing issues in their community.

“This is just the best opportunity to be able to share that message with everybody,” McDougle said.

T

he new Beaver College of Health Sciences’ Department of Recreation Management and Health Education chair plans to continue motivating and collaborating with faculty and students in her new position.

RMPE associate professor Melissa Weddell was named the department’s new chair on Feb. 22.

Weddell has worked at App State for nine years. She was the recreation management program director from 2017-18 and the interim department chair for nine months.

As chair, Weddell said she hopes to continue the RMPE department’s outreach efforts within health sciences, App State and the community.

“I think that our department within the college is really the foundation of health, whether it’s as kids learning physical education, the importance of physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, or health education and wellness,” Weddell said.

Weddell said she thinks a national crisis concerning mental health, obesity and people not going outdoors enough makes the RMPE department’s work more critical than ever.

Adult obesity rates in the U.S. increased 5

percent between 2017 and 2018, from 29.931.3 percent, according to the United Health Foundation’s annual report.

Forty million American adults suffered from a mental health condition in 2018, according to Mental Health America.

“One way we are helping is through our general education wellness literacy that all students have to take,” Weddell said. “Also, we have PE faculty that works with the homeschool program in our region. Every week, homeschooled kids come in and get their physical activity requirements for their curriculum.”

Weddell was also a Faculty Senator for six years.

Faculty Senate is an organization that considers and acts on university matters, and consists of one member from each academic department.

Weddell said her involvement with Faculty Senate allowed her to meet faculty from all over campus and see how each department runs.

“Those networks are really great for support, or learning to call someone if you need suggestions, or guidance,” Weddell said. “That was probably the most valuable experience for me.”

Weddell attended the Academic Leadership Development program during the 2016-17 academic year, which she said helped her prepare for different leadership roles.

In 2017, Weddell won the Excellence in Research Award from the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association for her contribution to the study “Nomadtopia: Emerging Tourism Markets,” which focused on families that live in RVs full time and travel across the country.

“My line of research involves full-time families living on the road, or couples and individuals living out of their vans—which is a component of rural tourism—how people come to these different communities,” Weddell said.

Marie Huff, dean of the Beaver College of Health Sciences, selected Weddell as the final candidate of a national search and was her direct supervisor when Weddell was interim chair. “(Weddell) is definitely very pleased that she has the ability to be a strong leader within the department and works in a very collaborative way with the faculty,” Huff said. “She’s also a strong advocate for her students.”

lowing Rock Investment Properties is expanding to a second building on King Street that will open to students for potential real estate internships.

The real estate company is constructing a two-story building at 736 W. King St. BRIP also sells real estate in Banner Elk, Linville, Sugar Mountain and Valle Crucis.

“This will be a one-stop shop,” owner of BRIP Scott Macintosh said. “We are looking to rent the top floor out and put companies in there that would be beneficial for the real estate, and vice versa.”

Macintosh said the building will act as a resource center for App State students looking to intern with real estate.

“I really wanted to involve the local community in this concept,” Macintosh said.

“I’m a big supporter of keeping it local, so that

all of us who live here can benefit from it.”

Macintosh said BRIP is focusing on convenience for consumers.

Macintosh said the original plans were to renovate the Wade Brown building, but the company ended up tearing it down.

“Over the process of the two years since we bought it, it really transformed to a much bigger project than we originally thought we were going to do,” Macintosh said.

Macintosh said BRIP worked with the Town of Boone to approve conceptual drawings and ensure the building is within city guidelines.

BRIP plans to finish building by midfall.

Macintosh said he does not want to disturb neighbors during the transition and building process.

“We don’t want it to be that because we’re growing, they’re hurting,” Macintosh said.

The building is located between Speakeasy Tattoo Company and Elevated Piercing.

“We’ve been impacted a little bit,” said Cacey Michaelson, a worker at Speakeasy Tattoo Company. “It was loud for a little bit, for the couple days that they were tearing everything down.”

Erin Lee, owner of Elevated Piercing, said there hasn’t been any inconvenience, other than a little bit of noise during demolition.

Macintosh said the new location will provide better exposure and expansion for the company, because BRIP will no longer feel pigeonholed to only selling in Blowing Rock.

“We don’t know what the future of this building is going to be,” Macintosh said. “I think that’s good planning. Being in the real estate business, you understand that you don’t build for today, you build for tomorrow.”

James Center interim director brings student affairs perspectives to role Jackie Park ‫@ ׀‬jackiempark ‫ ׀‬Associate News Editor

Coats has focused on how Reich College of Education programs can improve and has spent time getting to know students, faculty and staff in RCOE since he took on the position in February.

A

fter just over a month in his new position, Jeffrey Coats is already bringing changes to the James Center for Student Success and Advising’s programs and positions.

Coats previously worked as associate provost and dean of students at Eureka College in Illinois before coming to App State in January 2018.

“Every institution is unique, so I’m learning the App State way of doing things,” Coats said.

Coats said he spent the last month getting to know the students, faculty and staff of the Reich College of Education after he was appointed director in early February.

“I think it’s important to understand the history of a center or a program,” Coats said. “And also

establish relationships and then have a collaborative vision and a shared vision of what you want in the future.”

Coats said he has looked at how RCOE programs can improve and what the college can offer in the future.

“One initiative that I’ve been working on in conjunction with Dr. (Alicia) Muhammed is starting a fellowship program for first-generation underrepresented students,” Coats said.

Muhammed is an undergraduate teacher education adviser in the James Center.

Coats said RCOE will offer the fellowship in the fall, and he and Muhammed will host an interest meeting later in the semester.

“I think the James Center does a lot of great work, but there are always

ways to improve,” Coats said.

He said he has experience working with education programs at other universities and wants to make education students’ experience as meaningful as possible.

Coats created a new position in the James Center: associate director of retention initiatives, which will provide academic advising and professional development to RCOE students.

“One of the main focuses is looking at what our teachers need in the field and then providing those opportunities and professional development programs for our education majors,” Coats said.

Coats said the idea for this position came from the question, “Why are North Carolina teachers leaving the profession of teaching?”

A North Carolina State Board of Education report showed an overall attrition rate of 8 percent, meaning 8 percent of North Carolina teachers left the profession in the 2017-18 school year.

Coats is following in the footsteps of former director Jan Stanley, who held the position for 10 years.

“Whenever there’s change, especially with someone like Jan, who served for a really long time and left this incredible legacy, I think it can be kind of intimidating to come into a role like that, but I think he’s done it really well,” said Megan Kasper, associate director for student engagement in the James Center.

Kasper said she is excited to work with someone with as much

student affairs experience as Coats.

“Our office is very hands-on, so I think it’s a good fit for him and a good fit for us to have someone who is really excited to build relationships with students and get to know them,” Kasper said.

Nia Robinson is a junior middle grades education major and president of the Appalachian Educators club. She said Coats’ student affairs background makes a difference in the center.

“It’s definitely a different perspective that we’re taking, but we’re thankful for it,” Robinson said.

Robinson told a story of one day when Coats came in during her desk shift at the James Center. She said he had just gone to the eye doctor and still had his eyes dilated. She asked

him why he came in if he couldn’t read or write anything, to which he replied, “Well, I can still talk.”

Coats said it is challenging getting to know so many students, faculty and staff members, but that it is a good thing He said he would love for his interim title to turn into a permanent one.

App State is Coats’ fifth institution of higher education, and he said the levels of dedication and involvement of RCOE students and App State students in general impresses him.

“I think you all are very genuine and very hard-working, and that’s an inspiration to me as an educator,” Coats said. “That makes me want to do everything I can to help you all.”

Somatic sustainability minor allows students to explore the connection between the human body and the environment Christine Dudley ‫@ ׀‬chridud ‫ ׀‬A&C Senior Reporter

W

ith the addition of the somatic sustainability minor in fall 2018, dance professors Laurie Atkins and Marianne Adams are inspiring students of all disciplines to understand their bodies to positively affect the world.

The somatic sustainability minor has been almost a decade in the making. Adams said the inspiration for the new minor came from her and Atkins’ background in somatics and wanting to sustain their bodies as dancers. Atkins and Adams presented at the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Conference in October 2015. They expected no one to show up to their presentation, but the room was packed.

“We were speaking about this need to have a balancing embodied experience as opposed to just screens and frantically going around in the world,” Adams said.

Somatic sustainability combines somatics, the use of bodywork to study internal physical perception and experience, and sustainability.

Somatic sustainability starts with looking inward, listening to one’s body and using this information to relate to social justice, the environment and the economy, according to the Department of Theatre and Dance.

“Somatic sustainability work is work that is developing body awareness, habitual awareness, and that awareness then has the capacity to move an individual and a collective toward possible change,” Atkins said.

Atkins said living in a society that numbs itself through screens and substances makes it difficult to develop mental, emotional and physical awareness and live fully in our bodies. Atkins said this minor is not just about self-care or the individual.

“It starts with individual work, but it’s all about how we potentially link our change of habits to making positive change in our community,” Atkins said.

Adams said somatic sustainability can help people love themselves.

“If you learn something from those (somatic) practices of being nonviolent within your body or nonjudgmental within your body, how does that actually perhaps take you into a place of wanting to have a conversation with somebody that you know you don’t agree with?” Adams said.

Atkins said other universities offer majors and minors in somatics embedded within dance programs, but she doesn’t know of any other program that combines somatic work and sustainable development.

To minor in somatic sustainability, a student must take both Principles of Sustainable Development, and Somatics and Sustainable Practices, a course created for the minor. Then students can choose two of three bodywork classes: Yoga as Somatic Practice, Pilates Mat, consisting of core strengthening exercises on a mat, or Gyrokinesis, consisting of torso repetitive movements from a stool or

a mat.

“It’s important to have a foot in more than one door because you might resonate with one physical experience more than another,” Atkins said.

Atkins said bodywork classes are important because change only starts when a person makes the exercise part of their routine.

“It’s like a system that you can work inside of, so you think about these larger ideas about what it is to have an embodied experience of the world, and then you can sit inside this system or this structure of Gyrokinesis to have a physical experience through that particular medium as one exploration,” Atkins said.

For the third part of the minor, a student can explore more

in-depth with yoga, pilates or Gyrokinesis, or take floor-barre, Alexander Technique or somatics.

With approval, students can choose a 3000-level course or higher in any other major or minor to fulfill the elective requirement. Atkins and Adams said they give students freedom with electives because somatic sustainability can relate to any discipline.

Junior theatre performance major Joy Siler said she is a somatic sustainability minor to study pilates more and to improve her acting.

“There is such a connection between acting and the body, and you have to know your body and know how to use your body,” Siler said.

Siler said playing Puck, a fairy hobgoblin, in the theater

department’s upcoming production “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” requires jumping and running around in a squat for the majority of the performance.

“Fortunately I do yoga and pilates regularly, and so I kind of have that strength and flexibility,” Siler said. “I can see that when I take care of my body, it allows me to do these cool things on stage that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to do.”

Siler said it took her a couple of weeks of reading and discussing articles in Somatics and Sustainable Practices to wrap her head around the complexity of somatic sustainability.

“If we can’t care for, understand and listen to our bodies, then how can we care for, understand and listen to the earth and what it needs?” Siler said.

Shelby DeGarmo I’m a visual artist. I do a lot of mixed media, so drawing and painting while throwing on some fun glitter, or collage, or dead flowers because why not? For me, moving from Winston-Salem to here, it was really interesting to see how the art scene is different.

It’s interesting how people in different areas like to express themselves, and then building those relationships with them and being inspired by everyone’s creativity. Here in Boone it’s so eclectic with tighter-knit circles. Seeing jewelry makers, ceramics artists, painters, illustrators, digital artists really revitalizes that urge for me to want to create something again.

he Umbrella Academy,” a Netflix series released on Feb. 15, is about people who have unique attributes and abilities such as having the body of a gorilla, throwing knives with incredible precision, altering reality with a lie, interacting with the dead, teleporting, time traveling and releasing destructive waves of force using sound.

“The Umbrella Academy” is based on Gerard Way’s comics of the same name. Way is the former lead singer for the emo, pop-punk band My Chemical Romance.

Developed by Steve Blackman and Jeremy Slater for Netflix, “The Umbrella Academy” begins with a Russian teenager, not pregnant, spontaneously giving birth in a pool. That day, 42 others were born at the same time, the same way.

A wealthy man, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, adopts seven of the children and creates the Umbrella Academy to teach them about their powers, forming a superhero group to fight crime. He gives the children numbers instead of conventional names, but their robot nanny Grace eventually names them.

The show

takes place long after the children learn about their powers, when they are older. The Academy has grown apart only for the death of their “father” to bring them back together.

One of the Umbrella Academy members, Number Five, comes back from an accidental trip to the future after surviving decades in a post-apocalyptic world, only for members of his family to not believe him at first.

The 10-episode series follows a fight to stop the apocalypse from happening when no one really believes it will.

“The Umbrella Academy” compares to the likes of “Deadpool” or an “Avengers” movie with even more ego, but in its own unique format.

Some reviewers have said the Umbrella Academy members resemble a dysfunctional X-Men group and I couldn’t agree more. While they did not form as a conventional family, the Umbrella Academy members are adopted siblings who have normal family bickering, along with the extra baggage that comes with superpowers.

With a drug-addicted death seer and a know-it-all half-gorilla, half-

man, the “family” is dysfunctional at best and downright lethal at worst.

With moments that will make you laugh out loud, gasp in shock or even cry, “The Umbrella Academy” is an excellent show that deals with family issues in an unconventional way.

Through drug use, relationships, loneliness and the relationship with their father, the way “The Umbrella Academy” faces these controversies is a breath of fresh air from a normal superhero show. By normal, I mean the classic superhero’s parents are killed so they withdraw into themselves and eventually fight for justice.

This is not that show.

Even if you do not like the show, the soundtrack, which features artists like Queen and Radiohead, make you want to listen to it over and over again. Way even makes a comeback to music with two songs.

It might not be for every superhero movie fan, but “The Umbrella Academy” is a solid show that deserves credit for changing the way people view superheroes—as people with human problems and not as invincible beings.

Len Sanqui is a young visual artist who uses fashion as another tool to show her creative side.

Sanqui, freshman commercial photography major, has an evolving, unique style that gives an honest impression of herself as an artist.

As a high school freshman, Sanqui dressed like her present-day self, but quickly gave it up to conform to her peers. Her time at App State has helped her rediscover her true self. She now stands out with comeback fashion trends from the ‘90s as she learned to show a more genuine side of herself.

“As soon as I got to college, I stopped caring as much to how I compared to other people,” Sanqui said.

Accessories help Sanqui make a statement and add flair to any outfit.

She wears fruit earrings that give her oufits a unique look. Sanqui has found it cheaper to buy jewelry from antique stores than an expensive outfit because jewelry can bring light to simple outfits. Her attention to detail is key to helping her express her personality.

“My strength is being coordinated with how I accessorize,” Sanqui said.

“It bothers me if everything doesn’t match with color and visual balance of an outfit. Everything has to be balanced.”

Fashion gives Sanqui the ability to openly connect with others and herself. She said she has noticed that people who make art dress more creatively, and she channels that creativity from the artists she has met.

Dressing for herself helps Sanqui feel more honest about who she is. As an artist, she wants to showcase herself as art, which fashion allows her to do.

“Fashion makes me feel more comfortable about my personality,” Sanqui said. “I feel like when I was dressing in a way that was not reflective to who I was, I did not feel comfortable with myself.”

n October, freshman theatre arts major Josiah Ford walked into the costume shop on the first floor of Chapell Wilson Hall and asked if he could volunteer. Kristin Grieneisen, the costume shop supervisor, threw him a pair of velvet, stretchy pants to hem. Now Ford is not only hemming pants, but sewing entire dresses together—and getting paid to do it.

The costume shop now employs 13 students to make costumes for all theater and dance productions on campus. Besides sewing clothes, workers create masks and hats, design wigs, and dye fabrics. Students can volunteer or work in the costume shop even if they haven’t taken the costume and makeup or production running crew classes. Grieneisen runs the shop, but theater professors Martha Marking and Sue Williams design costumes for productions and assist workers if they need help.

Senior theatre arts major Michele Zaremba started volunteering in the shop in January to fulfill the 20-hour requirement for her costume and makeup class. Zaremba started off with small things like ironing, taking in skirts and sewing labels on costumes for “Eurydice,” which the Department of Theatre and Dance put on in February.

Now Zaremba enjoys the serging machines, which cut excess fabric from seams and finishes the edge of the fabric with a tight stitch so it does not fray.

Serging still makes employee Xel Bernardo, sophomore theatre performance major, nervous. Bernardo said she once cut off too much fabric while serging. Luckily she had extra fabric to correct her mistake.

enced deep frustration while working on the mesh costumes for Fall Appalachian Dance Ensemble. Fabrics like cotton behave, but others like mesh are “a nightmare.”

“It bunches up very easily or you end up sewing together pieces you don’t want to sew, and it’s just a lot of seam ripping,” Bernardo said. “You’re afraid to seam-rip any mistake you made because you might seam-rip the actual mesh.”

Ford has also struggled with misbehaving fabrics on the sewing machine. He once sat at the machine for an hour sewing tulle, a lightweight plastic material used to make skirts and dresses poofy. He accidentally ripped the tulle three inches and had to start over.

Tulle is not only difficult to sew, it is like an open banana peel on the floor. One of Ford’s coworkers stood up from the machine, stepped on the tulle hanging down from it and wiped out. Ford said even though it sounds funny now, it was terrifying in the moment, because she could have injured herself.

Not all experiences in the shop are dangerous. Ford said on the average day he loves working the machine.

“Sitting there and watching it go through, and follow through and make sure everything lines up and then you take it off,” Ford said. “There’s thread holding it together, and it’s an article of clothing at that point.”

For Bernardo, using a sewing machine is a nostalgic and relaxing experience. She remembers people coming in and out of her house to have her grandmother mend their clothes. Because she grew up around a machine, she picked up the skill quickly.

Bernardo compared sewing at the machine to driving.

“You’ve got a pedal, and you’ve got to focus,” Bernardo said.

Bernardo said getting distracted can result in a mishap like sewing your sleeve into the fabric.

Before the costume ends up at the machine, it goes through multiple steps. The costume designer draws a rendering, which gets passed to a shop worker along with the actor’s measurements. Using thick brown paper, the worker cuts a pattern for the costume. The worker uses the pattern to make a mock-up, a barebones muslin version of the costume. The actor tries on the mock-up, and the worker pins and marks it so they can make adjust-

ments. The worker uses the pattern to start cutting the real fabric for the costume, “which is really scary because we usually have a very limited amount of fabric,” Ford said.

After the worker sews the costume, the actor tries it on, and the worker pins it where it needs alterations. Sometimes that involves taking the fabric in or out again and again until it fits perfectly.

Ford said watching a costume go from rendering, to mock-up, to finished product is extremely rewarding and fills him with pride. When the actor tries on the costume for the final fitting, it’s sometimes a magical moment.

“I know it’s sturdy and I know the entire inner workings of it,” Ford said.

“I’d compare it to like a sculpture or an art piece, where you finish it and you put it where it’s meant to be… and you’re happy with it.”

Other times sheer frustration with the costume makes Ford say, “I never want to see this thing again.”

Even though their jobs can be stressful and frustrating, Grieneisen makes sure her workers are in a laidback work environment. Ford recalled a moment when he and the other workers were silently hunched over

sewing machines, sergers and work tables. Grieneisen walked in and said, “Where’s the music? It feels too sweatshoppy in here.”

Bernardo said the environment is supportive and positive. When someone needs help or doesn’t know how to do something, Grieneisen is patient.

“She doesn’t get frustrated whatsoever,” Bernardo said.

Because the shop is working on costumes for Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” they crack jokes about Bottom’s costume, whose head is transformed into the head of an ass.

Zaremba said she always feels comfortable in the shop.

“Every time I go in, I don’t re-

ally know anyone, but there’s music playing and we all just kind of start talking,” Zaremba said.

Despite the injuries, repeated adjustments and mishaps, the workers find solace and satisfaction in working in the costume shop.

“Whenever I have a stressful day…just going in and being around everyone and focusing on one small task at a time is just very therapeutic,” Bernardo said.

Mountaineers perform well at SoCon championship, send four wrestlers to NCAA championships

fter its fourth consecutive regular season Southern Conference title, the App State wrestling team participated in the SoCon Wrestling Championship on March 10 at the Holmes Convocation Center.

Eight teams traveled to Boone hoping to secure their tickets to the NCAA wrestling championships, including fellow regular season title-winners Campbell University and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Three App State wrestlers secured automatic berths into the NCAA championships. Senior Randall Diabe, junior Cary Miller and sophomore Codi Russell all won their respective weight classes, clinching a spot for each of them.

Junior Matt Zovistoski will also participate in the NCAA championships after receiving an at-large bid following his third place finish in the SoCon championship. The most recent AP coaches poll ranked Zovistoski No. 28 in the country at the 149-pound weight class.

Diabe, who had a first-round bye, won both of his matches by decision. His first bout with junior Rodney Jones of Chattanooga ended in a 9-0 major decision, with his second match against senior Sawyer Root of The Citadel ending in a 5-4 decision.

Miller also had a first-round bye and managed to pin his first opponent of the day, junior Michael McAleavey from The Citadel, in 1:45. He defeated junior Odgerel Batkhishig of Campbell University in an 8-1 decision.

Russell was the only Mountaineer of the trio to not have a first-round bye, but still managed to win all three of his matches. He defeated sophomore Cliff Conway of the Virginia Military Institute in a 19-4 technical fall. He also defeated freshman Kyle Gorant of Davidson College by a 10-1 major decision and redshirt

junior Noah Gonser of Campbell University by a 9-4 decision.

“I came really close to qualifying (for the NCAA championships) last year, so to finally get this monkey off my back feels amazing,” Russell said. “Wrestling in front of all those people really gets your adrenaline pumping. I can’t wait.”

Russell’s older brother will also be at the championships, representing the University of Minnesota.

Zovistoski had an impressive day at the SoCon championship, winning all but one of his matches by major decision. His third place finish was a result of his second round loss to freshman Tanner Smith of Chattanooga, where Smith edged out Zovistoski in a close 3-2 decision.

Zovistoski reached the championships his sophomore season, making this his second NCAA championships appearance. He wrestled in multiple tournaments as an unattached wrestler the next season while taking a redshirt year.

ead coach for App State men’s basketball Jim Fox was relieved of his duties after five seasons on March 15, according to App State Athletics.

Men’s basketball has posted a record of 56-99 since App State hired Fox in April 2014, including a 35-59 record in Sun Belt play. Fox’s best record with the Mountaineers came in 2017-18, going 15-18 with a 9-9 Sun Belt mark, good for a No. 5 finish in conference play.

“I want to thank Jim and his staff for all they have done for our basketball program,” athletic director Doug Gillin said in a press release. “Jim inherited a challenging situation, worked hard and has brought in high character student athletes.”

The highlight of Fox’s career at App State was the development of senior guard Ronshad Shabazz, who scored over 2,000 points in his time as a Mountaineer and became the second-leading scorer in school history in the 2019 season.

While Fox’s success on the court was muted, he was highly successful off of it. Fox’s first season at App State included a postseason ban due to the program’s failure to meet the NCAA minimum Academic Progress Rate score of 930. Since his takeover, the program has registered an APR of over 950 multiple times, including two seasons with a 980 score.

Fox was the 21st head coach in App State men’s basketball history and the first to coach in the Sun Belt Con-

ference. Before coming to App State, he spent 13 years at former Southern Conference rival Davidson College, spending two seasons as the associate head coach.

Per Fox’s contract, App State is required to pay Fox a $200,000 buyout to complete the termination. Associate head coach Jason Allison will serve as interim head coach while App State Athletics conducts a search for a permanent head coach.

“Our vision for basketball is to annually compete for a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament,” Gillin said in a press release. “We will conduct a national search to find the best leader to accomplish that vision.”

ports are universal. Athletes come from different walks of life from all around the world, and it is no different at App

State.

Out of the 18 men’s and women’s sports teams at App State, 10 of them have at least one player from outside the U.S., each with their own unique journey to Boone.

For Julian Cepeda, a junior golfer from Colombia, this journey included sending over 100 emails to college coaches across the country until he got the chance to play.

“Only a few schools answered.

When Coach (Bo) Redman answered, he said I had to play a qualifier, like tryouts, for the team,” Cepeda said.

“And I just said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to go and see what happens,’ and I made it.”

For tennis players Milo Bargeron, junior, and Sandra Anglesjö, sophomore, the recruiting process was much different, both using liaisons between Europe and the U.S. to find App State.

“I hired a well-known lady in my hometown, London, and she had different connections in America,” Bargeron said. “And then basically she sent my resume to those different coaches in America, and I got different offers and just chose here.”

Student-athletes are already limited in the amount of time they can spend at home, but when home is thousands of miles away, this time is cut even shorter.

“I usually just go home for Christmas because I have a tennis coaching job in New York over the summer, so I just do that for the summer and then go home for Christmas,” Bargeron said.

For a lot of international athletes, being away from home is nothing new.

Cepeda left Colombia his senior year of high school to attend school in the U.S., while Anglesjö attended high school for just one year in her hometown of Norrköping, Sweden.

“I actually am kind of used to it because I went to a boarding school when I was 14, so I moved from my family at that time,”Anglesjö said. “So I stayed away from my family for like three years, and then the last year of high school, my senior year, I moved back home to then come here.”

Anglesjö described her hometown in Sweden as similar to Boone geographically, but most students from outside the U.S. have to adjust to a different scenery.

“I felt like when I first came here everything just felt so spread

out, like you have to drive everywhere,” Bargeron said. “But back home I can pretty much walk to my friend’s house or like get the bus into town. It’s so easy.“ Another adjustment for these international athletes is the difference in cuisine. Anglesjö noted a significant difference in portion sizes, the U.S. having much larger serving sizes than Sweden.

Bargeron added that the food is much more sugary and salty compared to England, and said he can’t even eat chips in the U.S. and claimed that even McDonald’s tastes better in the U.K. Even human interaction is different in the U.S. “I think the people are somewhat different. In Sweden, we don’t approach each other the same,” Angles-

jö said. “I’ve never been approached like being in the public bathroom, like here people will say, ‘Hi how’s your day?’ and I was like, ‘I’m just going to the bathroom, why do you ask me that?’”

International athletes go through many of the same struggles that all students do. Cepeda said he got lost all of the time his first few weeks on campus, and Anglesjö said she was awkward during her first year at App State. But in most cases, they go through these normal struggles and the unique cultural ones in pursuit of an opportunity that typically isn’t offered in their home countries.

“The best part here is that at least I can combine education and tennis because that’s kind of why I’m here.

We can’t do that in Sweden,” Anglesjö said.

Women’s basketball falls in Sun Belt semifinals

fter finishing with its best record while in the Sun Belt, the App State women’s basketball team made a postseason run in the Sun Belt tournament in New Orleans, finishing with a loss to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in the semifinals.

After the Sun Belt Conference predicted the team would finish No. 9 in the conference at the beginning of the season, the team finished with a 10-8 record, double the amount of conference wins from 2018.

The Mountaineers won four of their last five games and earned the fifth seed in the tournament by defeating South Alabama on the last day of the regular season.

“It’s definitely a great feeling to know that our hard work has paid off,” sophomore guard Tierra Wilson said. “It’s tournament time, and everyone wants to win, so we have to want it more.”

The seeding was good for a first-round bye in the tournament before defeating Coastal Carolina on March 13 to advance to the quarterfinals against Georgia State.

The Mountaineers upset the No. 4 ranked Panthers with a buzzer-beater from senior guard Madi Story to advance to the semifinals for the first time since joining the Sun Belt. They played Arkansas-Little Rock, the regular season conference

champions, on March 15.

“We’ve been working hard since the summertime, so she (head coach Angel Elderkin) is always reminding us about the work we put in,” junior guard Ashley Polacek said. “We’re going to take it one day at a time, one game at a time, so our focus is really just on the now.”

The Mountaineers fell 80-64 to Arkansas-Little Rock. They stuck with the regular season champions for the majority of the game, but struggled to keep up in the scoring down the stretch. This marked the end of the regular season for the Mountaineers, and they finished with an 18-14 record.

App State will look to continue improving in the offseason and continue the growth that the program has seen over the past few years. Several starters will return for the Mountaineers including Bayley Plummer, Lainey Gosnell and Ashley Polacek as well as key reserves Maya Calder, Nicola Mathews and Pre Stanley.

The Mountaineers earned their first postseason berth since 2013, accepting a bid to play in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Their first game was on the road against UNC-Asheville on March 20.

NCAA DOES NOT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT COMPENSATION TO NOT PAY COLLEGE ATHLETES Tommy Mozier ‫@ ׀‬TheAppalachian ‫ ׀‬Opinion Writer It’s March, which means it is the best time of year for college basketball fans. The NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament has arrived, and with it comes the annual question of just how the NCAA can profit off players who do not receive a cent.

It’s moments like small school Loyola-Chicago making the Final Four. Villanova and North Carolina combining for two consecutive amazing three-pointers at the end of the 2016 National Championship; the greatest comeback, or collapse, ever seen, as Texas A&M came back from 12 points down with 36 seconds left to stun Northern Iowa. They keep fans watching every year.

Compelling narratives are easy to get caught up in. People love to see the underdog Cinderellas, the redemption stories or a historically dominant team. What sometimes is lost in all of the romantic storytelling is one important fact: the tournament and sport is built on exploitation of young men, 64 percent of them African-American.

In 2018, the NCAA Tournament brought in over $1 billion in revenue from TV deals and advertising, making it one of the largest sporting events in the world, rivaling Super Bowl 53’s $408 million in advertising revenue.

Its president, Mark Emmert, rakes in $2.4 million annually after his raise in 2016, according to Sports Illustrated magazine.

The 2019 NCAA Tournament may finally expose the NCAA for the scam that it is. The reason is simple: Duke freshman phenomenon and presumed NBA draft top pick Zion Williamson.

When Lebron James went directly to the NBA from high school in 2003, Sports Illustrated already called him “The Chosen One.” People can

only speculate how much revenue he would have brought in for the NCAA had he played just a single year in college, but it would probably look something like what Williamson brings in.

The revenue Williamson has generated in his first and almost certainly only year of college is absurd. Ticket prices increase an average of 178 percent when he is playing, according to ticket site SeatGeek. Williamson and Duke were involved in each of the top five most watched college basketball games of the year, three against rivals North Carolina and two against Virginia. He is the headline of every sports talk show and the main story of every game, even if he isn’t playing.

If the regular season is any indicator, the revenue he will generate from the tournament if Duke makes a deep run as expected will surpass the NCAA record set in 2018.

When Williamson blew out his shoe and suffered a knee injury 36 seconds into a home game against North Carolina, USA Today reported that Nike lost $3 billion in the stock market and the NBA announced it had began discussions to end the “one-and-done” rule and once again allow players to be drafted out of high school.

Despite this, the NCAA would have people believe that Williamson, along with all other players, cannot be compensated because they are “amateurs” and already are being paid in something “much more valuable:” an education.

Major student athletes are not “amateurs.” The NCAA throws the term around wherever it’s needed.

They used it to justify profiting off of player likenesses when former UCLA star Ed O’Bannon sued the NCAA for using his likeness in the since discontinued NCAA video games. The NCAA

used it to refuse covering players “cost of attendance” from 1975-2015, to the point where Final Four Most Valuable Player Shabazz Napier went to bed hungry because he couldn’t afford food. For many student-athletes, their sport is like working a full-time job without being paid on top of academic obligations, according to a lawsuit filed against the University of North Carolina and the NCAA in 2014.

Since the NBA instituted the “one-and-done” rule in 2006, college basketball has become a one-year pit stop for many players, including most of the popular, ratings-boosting players such as Derrick Rose, Trae Young and Anthony Davis. While some players return to college after turning professional to finish their degree, spending one year in college is not being paid in a full education. Some players, such as top three draft picks Lonzo Ball and Ben Simmons dropped out of college as soon as the basketball season ended. A projected top pick in this year’s draft, Vanderbilt University’s Darius Garland, dropped out of college to prepare for the NBA after he suffered a season-ending injury.

What the sports media is calling “The Zion Effect” may not lead to paying players. What it has done is further expose a business model that is built on exploitation and unpaid labor, which many players try hard to avoid.

To Williamson’s credit, he is finishing off the year after getting hurt.

The best thing that could happen for college basketball and the NCAA is if the NBA removes the “one-anddone” rule. The arguments against paying players cannot handle another player like Williamson.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Q Russell । @Q_M_Russell । Opinion Editor With the recent college admission scandal involving the privileged elite buying their children spots at prestigious universities, it seems the punishment is less for the payment and more for who got paid.

On March 12, news broke about a massive college entrance cheating plot that led to charges for dozens of people including Lori Loughlin of “Full House” and Felicity Huffman of “Desperate Housewives.”

The scheme, which William Singer orchestrated through his company, Edge College & Career Network, began in 2011 and focused on having wealthy parents pay the company to help their children cheat on college entrance exams and falsify athletic records to secure admission into elite schools such as Yale, USC and Stanford, according to the Los Angeles Times.

According to the legal brief, Singer instructed the parents to donate to a fake charity he had established for the scheme. Most paid around $200,000, but some spent up to $6.5 million, and the parents deducted the “donations” from their income taxes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Administrators and coaches allegedly received money from Singer and his organization to accept students with falsified athletic records and to give them spots on collegiate teams.

Singer even went so far as having photos doctored to superimpose the faces of wealthy children onto the bodies of athletes to “prove” that the children were athletes.

Absurd as this whole scandal is, the most telling sign about the reason for the punishment comes from U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling, who announced the charges.

“We’re not talking about donating a building so that a school is more likely to take their son or daughter, we’re talking about deception and fraud,” Lelling said when he announced the charges.

The only difference between buying a building for a school and this scandal is that the money went to private individuals instead of the universities the kids got into.

The core concept is the same; privileged children of the wealthy elite are receiving entrance into universities they’re not necessarily qualified for due to the liberal application of their family’s wealth.

Functionally, the spots are still stolen from applicants with more merit but less wealth, but in these cases, the universities aren’t getting a fancy new administrative building.

While these wealthy parents being prosecuted for their crimes is a good sign, it’s unlikely that universities will take the steps to truly solve the endemic issues of wealth disparity in the academic realm.
