Giving back: Highlighting the accomplishments of leaders on campus
Ella Adams & K. Slade | Managing Editor & Visual Managing Editor
A student’s time at App State is made of more than just classes. Many students have found a place within the university’s several student clubs and organizations and these graduating students reflect on their time as leaders on campus.
Hugo Rios-Pineda
When Hugo Rios-Pineda found out App State had an organization that celebrated Latin and Hispanic culture, he knew he had to join.
The Latin Hispanic Alliance president and graduating senior joined LHA as a sophomore for the Fall 2021 semester, after spending his freshman year at home.
“I knew I had to join and enter a space that celebrated my heritage,” Rios-Pineda wrote in an email. “It was the first time I had ever seen or heard
of such a thing.”
As a first-generation Mexican American, Rios-Pineda has become accustomed to being a minority after attending PWIs throughout his life.
“When I saw that LHA had its own space to celebrate, it made me realize deep down I desperately craved to be part of a multicultural organization,” Rios-Pineda wrote.
Rios-Pineda joined LHA to find a community of people who understood each other on a deeper level. Seeing people spend time together, become friends and have a good time is deeply enriching and one of the reasons he joined the executive board, RiosPineda wrote.
Over his time at LHA, RiosPineda’s proudest accomplishment was helping to plan the Latin-Hispanic Heritage Festival during Hispanic Heritage Month. His senior year was
“extra special” because he was serving as president. With beautiful weather on Sanford Mall and close to 300 people in attendance, the event was a success.
“There was food, over 12 different organizations, student performers, and local performers alike. Live music, and of course, Pinatas to end the night,” Rios-Pineda wrote. “It’s a logistical monster that I feel we conquered.”
Reflecting on his time with the organization, Rios-Pineda looks forward to the future of the organization and to what next year’s executive board has in store.
“LHA welcomes everyone,” RiosPineda wrote. “We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate our Latinidad week in and week out.”
LaShawndra White
LaShawndra White, soon to receive her doctoral degree in educational leadership with a concentration in higher education, began her App State journey in August 2019.
In 2021, White presented at the Southeastern Women’s Studies Association Conference under the theme “Precarious Times: Embodying Disobedience, Crafting Affinities.” She was a panelist on Johnston Community College Courageous Conversations: Gender-Based Dynamics.
In these spaces, White explored
socio-political issues surrounding George Floyd’s murder. She used her experiences from App State to advocate for herself and to be a “change agent” for others.
“I learned from knowledgeable professors who genuinely believed in the mission to create equitable educational spaces, and who equipped and empowered students to become change agents,” White wrote in an email. “I also learned alongside an amazing cohort of educational professionals with a strong desire to make a difference in their work environments and communities, and many of us are still connected and rooting for each other to this day.”
White is the first student to have an all-Black dissertation committee in App State history. She described the “great importance” of having a committee of Black women review her dissertation, titled “The Journey to Thrive: An Exploration of the Experiences of Black Women Administrators at Predominately White Community Colleges.”
To keep the anonymity of the research participants in White’s dissertation, she used her mother, sister, and grandmothers’ names as their pseudonyms as a form of celebrating the “most influential Black women” in her life.
“Forming my committee and highlighting my family members truly made me proud to actively amplify the
voices of Black Women in every part of my dissertation process,” White wrote.
White serves as a higher education administrator with a position on the board of directors in various nonprofit organizations. After graduating, she is excited to spend more time with her loved ones, travel and work with community ministries.
Using what she’s learned from her time here at App State, White plans to help others thrive personally, professionally and academically.
White wants all Black women in predominantly white spaces to strive to fulfill their purpose and make a “positive impact” in the spaces Black women occupy. She wants Black women in predominantly white spaces to feel empowered through “their highest level of holistic well-being.”
“I would encourage them to strategize how they could use their voice to share their stories and realities and take steps to make changes and/ or influence others to make changes that will help them reach their goals,” White wrote.
Aubrey Smith
Graduating senior Aubrey Smith joined student-run advertising agency Second Story Media in August 2023. Although she has been with Second Story Media for a short time, she has helped carve out a place on campus for the recently-formed organization. Seeing the impactful work Second Story Media was providing to local nonprofits inspired Smith to join the organization.
“I wanted to be a part of this team that has such a positive impact on the community,” Smith wrote in an email. Second Story Media serves business and nonprofit clients, with a variety of services including social media management, strategic planning, press releases and event planning.

Why graduates stay in Boone: Perspectives from current and former students
|
In the 2022 graduation edition, The Appalachian published a story about recent alumni and their plan to stay in Boone. Today, two of those graduates reflect on their time since and two current students talk about their decision.
Emma Brown, a senior special education major, is choosing to remain in Boone. Brown has worked at Grandfather Vineyard and Winery for three years.
“It’s a great job, it’s kind of a parttime job, but after I graduate I was planning on living in Boone, working, saving up some money, and then I’ll start teaching a little bit later,” Brown said.
In terms of housing, Brown is not concerned, and said she got really lucky in finding the place where she has lived for three years.
“It’s great rent, and I’m not planning on leaving, so I’ve kind of gotten that secured,” Brown said. “I know it’s horrible right now with the housing situation.”
In 2022, Dalton Stroup was interviewed by The Appalachian and completed his Master of Arts in student affairs administration. Stroup said before starting at App State, he would not have considered graduate school or working at a school.
After being sent home during the COVID-19 pandemic his junior year, he began to reconsider his options after speaking to an advisor on the resident assistant’s council. He told himself, “I don’t want to wear a suit and tie for the rest of my life. He said he was driving through
campus one day and watching the sunset when he thought to himself, “‘I’m not ready to leave yet. I need a little bit more time here in the mountains. I don’t think I’ve learned everything I could learn from App; I want to stay.’”
Through the program, Stroup completed a graduate assistantship through the Division of Student Affairs. He was the residence hall director for Bowie Hall during the first year of his graduate studies and for Dogwood Hall the following year.
He graduated with his master’s in 2023. He said he also took a wide
range of courses, focusing on student relationships and advising.
“We did the sorts of things to give us a set of skills in order to understand how the real world will be impacting our future institutions, us as administrators and also our students that we serve,” Stroup said.
Stroup said once he reached the end of his two years at graduate school, he decided to leave Boone because he was ready for a new learning
experience. He is now the full-time hall director for Paul Jennings Hall at James Madison University.
“It wasn’t the school or the town, or anything like that. I just felt like I needed more of a challenge,” Stroup said.
Ashton Roess graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in May 2023 and is graduating with her master’s degree this year as part of the Accelerated Master’s Program. After graduating, she plans to continue working remotely with the company she’s worked for since May 2022, PharPoint Research. She said PharPoint works with pharmaceutical biotechnology companies to help with the clinical trial process of pharmaceuticals.
Roess said she was planning on moving into an apartment with her partner of two years. Their goal was to find an apartment that was walking distance from the places they frequented most, but were unable to do so within their price range.
“I definitely think housing here has increased since I’ve been living in Boone the past four to five years,” Roess said. “It was just super hard finding a place to live. We didn’t find a place to live until about a month ago.”
Roess said she’s hoping to learn more about the professional side of Boone and the residents who are not students.
When interviewed in 2022, Matthew Johnson told The Appalachian his plan was to continue his education in biology with graduate school. Now, nearing the end of his time in the biology graduate program, his plan is to go into the workforce once he finishes his graduate degree.
“For education and career, right now my next step is really just finishing grad school,” Johnson said. “After that, I think I need a little break from education. I just need to make money at this point. So, my next step would really be for career.”
Johnson said he wants to start with an entry level job and potentially further his education even more with a PhD after a few years of work. He said his plan is to finish graduate school before the first summer session.
“I don’t take classes at this point, It’s all project based,” Johnson said. “Once I get my project where it needs to be, I’m done. This week I’m doing my seminar, after a month or so I turn in my thesis, and then I have my defense. Once my defense is done, that’s when I’m done really.”

Reflecting on four years: a timeline of major events at App State
| Associate A&C Editor
Abby Buckner
Engagement in social justice: Amidst the pandemic, the App State community joined nationwide movements advocating for social justice, participating in peaceful protests and a march against injustice to advocate for equality and systemic change.
Winter Storm Izzy: The beginning of 2022 marked a massive winter storm that left around 12 inches of snow in Boone. In-person classes were canceled and App State students turned to their favorite snow-day activities.
COVID-19 hits: In March 2020, the pandemic swept across the globe and dramatically shifted life as well know it. App State transitioned to remote learning, and students grappled with the challenges of adjusting to online classes and social distancing measures. A line of students wait to undergo testing for COVID-19 in College Street Parking Deck September 2020.
Luke Combs’ Homecoming concert: One of App State’s most notable alumni, Luke Combs, made a highly anticipated return to Boone, performing a stadium concert attended by over 40,000 people. This marked a significant cultural event for the community after its postponement for over a year due to COVID-19 concerns. The former Bowie Hall resident opened his encore with a cover of alumnus Eric Church’s “Carolina.”
Memorable football season: App State experienced one of its most memorable football seasons in 2022. Mountaineers fans show their excitement and hold up homemade signs in the pit at College GameDay. Some highlight moments include the Texas A&M upset followed by the historic first visit of College GameDay in Boone and the Hail Mary win against Troy. During the season, the post football game destruction of the Baby art sculpture and vandalism of Wey Hall ignited discussions about the campus art community, serving as a memorable and contentious moment.

CONGRATULATIONS Class of 2024 And so the adventure begins... News
Legends closed its doors: Legends, a venue for live performances, closed its doors in fall 2023. App State’s staple entertainment venue closed after 20 years of operation due to issues with the building’s structural integrity.
Art protests: The sudden closure of Wey Hall provoked upset among the art community, leading to much discussion and peaceful protests for the advocacy of students’ safety in Wey Hall. Students assemble on the main strip of Sanford Mall on March 28.
Boone’s first pride festival: In the summer before the Fall 2023 semester, Boone celebrated its first pride festival with a march around King Street.
Wey Hall renovations: Construction to Wey Hall began early in the school year, but reported safety concerns amidst construction sparked the sudden closure of Wey Hall and the cancellation of art classes for half a week in April.
Total Solar Eclipse: Millions of people across the country witnessed the 2024 solar eclipse on April 8.
Chancellor Sheri Everts stepped down: Everts announced on April 15 through an email that she stepped down from the Office of the Chancellor due to “significant health challenges.” The announcement came at a time of heavy controversy at App State, and left students and faculty wondering what’s next.
In Boone, people gathered to see 80-85% of the sun’s light darkened by the moon. Students gathered on Sanford Mall April 8 to watch the solar eclipse. The astronomy club on campus handed out solar eclipse glasses for those wishing to view the eclipse.

Meet the people who make commencement happen
Thousands of students will wake up on the mornings of May 10 and 11 and prepare to take their final steps as App State students. There are many things students may do to prepare for such a momentous occasion: taking showers, brushing their hair, putting on robes and cords, meeting up with family and friends and steadying their nerves.
However, many of these students might not think about the numerous steps that are taken to prepare for this significant day and its thousands of attendees, and further, the people who work to make it a success.
To host the six commencement ceremonies, many university employees, students, faculty and others must work together.
Professor of Music/Trumpet James Stokes, Lead Pershing Rifleman William Gulley, Director of Holmes
Convocation Center Jason Parker and Operations Manager and Commencement Coordinator Mary Banks each work in unique ways in the organization of the ceremonies.
James Stokes
James Stokes has worked for App State since 2006 when he was hired as an associate professor and has participated in the commencement ceremony since 2009. He is the conductor of the Appalachian Brass Ensemble, the group responsible for most of the music played during the ceremonies.
The ensemble will perform “Pomp and Circumstance” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the processional, and “Procession of the Scholars” and “Hi Hi Yikas” during the recessional, according to the
commencement ceremony schedule.
To prepare, the ensemble holds an additional practice session the day before the ceremony and does a quick sound check before the ceremony, Stokes wrote in an email.
“There are years of practice and preparation for the professional quality performance that our students present in our ceremonies,” Stokes wrote. “They are up to the task with our brief rehearsal and sound check.”
The brass ensemble has been participating in the ceremony for decades, Stokes wrote.
Throughout the processional and recessional music, the ensemble members communicate with each other while performing. The processional for the College of Arts and Sciences can last as long as 15-20 minutes, so the student performers must pace themselves and each
Gulley said. “Its main foundation is drill and ceremony, but they also try to focus on small leadership development, as well.”
The App State unit’s main focus is on color guard events in the community, Gulley said.
The Pershing Rifles has a short part in the commencement ceremony presenting the colors and Gulley said it is one of the easier events the group takes part in.
The difficult part, Gulley said, is trying to get enough volunteers for the event because it takes place after the academic year has ended and many Pershing Rifle members have already left town.
There are five members of the unit that attend the ceremony, four of whom participate and one attends as an alternate. This way they can cycle in and out of ceremonies over the two days.
Gulley said the members usually practice for about two hours before the ceremony to avoid any missteps.
“At the point we do it, we already have, like, an experienced team — people that have already been doing this for a while. So it’s just a quick runthrough,” Gulley said about preparing for the ceremony.
He said he enjoys participating in the ceremony because it gives him time to socialize with other Pershing Rifle members and he can watch friends and classmates walk across the stage.
Jason Parker
other to ensure they play smoothly throughout the time.
“We are very proud of our students’ ability to play at such a high level for our school and for the commencement ceremonies of which our graduates will celebrate every year in May and December,” Stokes wrote.
William Gulley
William Gulley, a junior economics major, said this will be the third year of commencement ceremonies he will have participated in. He is a member of App State’s unit of the National Society of the Pershing Rifles through the ROTC.
The Pershing Rifle’s Engage page says the group is “the face of all military events on Appalachian State University’s campus.”
“It’s a national society for ROTC,”
As director of the Holmes Convocation Center — a position Jason Parker has held for 18 years — Parker and his team’s participation in the commencement ceremony is extensive. He has participated in the ceremony for 23 years.
His team is responsible for setting up and breaking down equipment needed, maintaining safety through bag checks and metal detector monitoring, operating sound and lighting equipment and more, Parker wrote in an email.
“As the manager of the team that handles the activities I described above, I am providing oversight and ensuring my team has what they need to make sure the day goes smoothly for the graduates and their loved ones,” Parker wrote.
Parker said students may not be aware that most of the preparation for

the event is performed by the ELITE team.
According to a job listing, members of ELITE facilitate the setup, break-down and security of many events in the Holmes Convocation Center, Schaefer Center of the Performing Arts and other event venues.
“It is great to be a part of watching students fulfill their dreams of getting a college education and the Commencement ceremonies are the culmination of all that hard work,” Parker wrote. “It is great to see the pride and happiness that families have in the accomplishment of their student.”
Mary Banks
Mary Banks said the commencement ceremonies are some of her favorite activities she participates in through her role as operations manager and commencement coordinator in the Office of University Events.
“I think of how each student that walks across the stage is a story,”
Banks wrote in an email. “Some students have had to overcome greater obstacles than others to get there, but when they enter the arena floor, they all share a single sentiment, ‘I made it!’”
As commencement coordinator, Banks is involved in many different aspects of the ceremony, including designing and distributing printed materials, assembling scripts, coordinating training and rehearsals and much more.
“We are all-hands-on-deck for whatever is needed,” Banks wrote. “Truly, the entire campus springs into action to make commencement a success.”
Banks wrote that she has been working in this role for two years and has participated in the organization of the commencement ceremony for five years. Banks has worked for App State for 13 years.
“It’s just a great day, students are excited, families, faculty, staff are all excited and so proud of the accomplishments of their students,” Banks wrote.

Student to guide to graduation day
Madalyn Edwards | Associate News Editor
It’s five days before the first graduation ceremony, and students rush across the court in Holmes Convocation Center, placing down carpeted panels on the hardwood floor to protect it from scratches during the event.
As the days count down, students build the stage, set up audio equipment, arrange chairs, prep rooms for presenters backstage and implement security measures and equipment.
The team starts off with approximately 15 people, but by the first day of the ceremonies, a team of over 75 is assembled and trained to comply with ADA guidelines and safety regulations.
The team of students called the Appalachian ELITE Team is supervised by student employees and Trevor Rowe, the events operations manager for Holmes Convocation Center. Rowe said the team that takes care of graduation operations behind the scenes is almost exclusively composed of students.
He said he feels that sometimes college students get a “bad rap” within the workplace, but said the ceremonies wouldn’t be possible without the help of the “fantastic” team.
“We’re on the same wavelength and they’ll go and do it,” Rowe said. “And their attention to detail is as good as some people I’ve known in the industry for 10 years when it comes to
event operations.”
The team implements a wide variety of safety measures, including the use of metal detectors, bag checks and floor security.
“They’re the ones that catch things coming in, try to keep weapons out. They’re the ones helping people to their seats. They’re the ones checking bags,” Rowe said. “It’s something I’m really proud of, that some of the safest environments on campus are protected by students.”
Senior Associate Registrar Kathy Scott, said the six ceremonies, which begin on May 10 and continue through May 11, are separated by colleges. She said some smaller colleges or departments may combine with others.
Graduates with special cords will be emailed prior to the ceremony to pick them up approximately two weeks before commencement.
She said students will arrive and sit in any order they wish to, as long as they are separated by undergraduate and graduate students, and will be given a card with their name and information on it.
Graduates will then hand the card to the reader as they step on stage. The information from the card will also be used to display the graduate’s name on the live stream for viewers not in attendance.
Scott said assistants will be present during the ceremony to answer students’ questions and help with any other needs.
“We don’t rehearse that ahead of time,” Scott said. “So, I know that can be nerve-wracking, so we want to make sure that they know there’s lots of us around to help them through that.”
As for the guest limit, Scott said students are not limited to the number of guests they may bring with them to the ceremony.
Both Rowe and Scott provided a list of helpful tips for students who will be crossing the stage this spring.
Know what you can and can’t bring
The Holmes Convocation Center has a strict clear bag policy. Any small
purse or clutch that exceeds 4.5 by 6.5 inches will not be allowed inside. Clear bags are permitted, but only those that measure no more than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Seat cushions without arms or pockets are permitted. Medically-necessary items will be granted entrance into the arena only after a “proper inspection,” per the convocation center’s website.
Rowe said student employees will be stationed across sidewalks leading to the arena as well as on bus routes to remind attendees of the bag policy so they do not have to turn around when they arrive at the convocation center.
Rowe said cameras with removable lenses are permitted as long as they are carried in a clear bag and not a traditional camera bag. He said tripods are not allowed, and those taking photos must be mindful not to block anybody’s view of the stage.
Additionally, Scott said professional photographers will be in attendance taking candid photos of graduates that family members can later purchase if they choose to do so.
Rowe said attendees are permitted to make signs to hold up for graduates, but they may not be on a wooden stick and must not obscure anybody’s view after their graduate’s name is called.
Finally, Rowe and Scott said those who will be in the ceremony should not bring bags or additional items with them except for their cellphones for photos to capture memories with.
Arrive early
Rowe said doors to the convocation center open an hour before each ceremony, and attendees and graduates should arrive when the doors first open. Additionally, he said visitors should factor in the time it will take to park and travel to the arena.
“I say if you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late,” he said.
According to the commencement information website, dedicated parking places for graduation include Rivers Street Parking Deck, Peacock Lot, New River Hall Lot, Garwood Lot and Blue Ridge (Stadium) Parking Deck. Shuttles will transport visitors parked in the New River Hall Lot
and Peacock Lot and will run on a continuous loop.
Disability parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in the John E. Thomas Visitor and Faculty/ Staff Lots and Hill Street Lot. A dedicated shuttle will transport visitors from these lots to the convocation center.
Barry Sauls with App State Parking said the designated parking locations are not expected to completely fill up.
“The Blue Ridge Deck, which is our ‘last resort’ so to speak, always has at least 250-300 empty spaces after the start of each ceremony,” Sauls wrote in an email.
Have patience
Rowe said he encourages students to have patience when it comes to attending the graduation ceremonies. He said complying with student employees, parking and App State Police will ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible during the events, especially during security screening.
“We’re not doing it to cause problems,” he said. “We’re doing it to make sure everyone’s safe.”
Enjoy the big day
Finally, Rowe and Scott encouraged students to have fun and enjoy the big day while remembering to be proud of themselves for this major accomplishment.
Scott said other alumni events take place during the week of graduation so students can stay in touch with the App State community and network with other alumni.
Any students with questions related to graduation can email graduation@appstate.edu or call the Holmes Convocation Center with any questions that will help ensure they have a fun, hassle-free day.

App State welcomes new sorority
A National Pan-Hellenic Council Sorority was chartered on App State’s campus in April, becoming the fourth historically Black sorority and eighth NPHC organization to be chartered and recognized on campus, according to Interfraternal Council Advisor Shaleeah Smith.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was chartered on April 7.
Smith wrote in an email that, while four fraternities submitted petitions for recognition by App State, it’s not guaranteed that they will be approved.
“Our 17 IFC chapter presidents unanimously voted against recognizing new IFC chapters for the 2024-2025 school year, so we will be supporting their decision,” Smith said. “While they voted ‘no’ this year, the conversation of growth will be annual, so they’ll have to vote again next school year.”
One of the main reasons the chapter presidents voted against the recognition of new fraternities was because of housing, said Hayes Sheridan, the vice president of risk management for the IFC.
“Over the past couple years, It’s just been kind of hard to get housing for existing fraternities,” Sheridan said. “So if we add four more, it would be extremely hard to find housing for some of the existing fraternities.”
This was the last of the four sororities in the council to be added, Smith wrote.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was rechartered in November 2015, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was established at App State in 1987 and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in 1991. The university also has four of the five NPHC fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
Senior religious studies major Caroline Hood, who was a former member of Greek Life, said adding this sorority is beneficial for sorority life at App State.
“I think that Greek life can have a terrible reputation for having a lack of diversity,” Hood said. “I think that having all four recognized just sort of
adds another element to Greek life.”
The total number of fraternity members has grown by almost 35% from Fall 2020 to Fall 2023, Smith wrote.
“While there won’t be any new IFC fraternities this upcoming year, I think appropriately-timed growth is always beneficial,” Smith wrote.
“The most significant benefit when a new organization is added is the opportunity for more students to join a fraternity/sorority.”
Various events and service projects were hosted by Fraternity and Sorority Life this year.
FSL hosted Greek Week in the fall. While this is an annual event, Smith said she thinks there was higher participation this year. New and different events were planned, such as a soccer tournament.
During the week, FSL raised nearly $1,800 for App Builds a Home and the Children’s Council of Watauga County. Around 2,000 cans of food for the Hunger and Health Coalition were also collected, Smith wrote.
“In terms of financial impact, our students typically raise over $100,000 for local and national non-profits and complete over 10,000 service hours in our local community each year,” Smith wrote.
Hood said that, while she knows there are complications to this idea, she thinks having houses for the FSL would bring more students towards the idea of rushing.
“I transferred from a school where housing was provided for Greek life,” Hood said. “That was mainly the reason people rushed and went through recruitment.”
Hood also said that being intentional about recruiting people who may not fit the stereotypes of typical sorority members would benefit FSL on campus. She said this would allow for a more diverse chapter and would allow the chapter to grow into many different friend circles throughout campus.
Smith has been working professionally for FSL since 2017 and has been the App State FSL advisor since July 2021. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta at Eastern Kentucky University. She said her experience motivated her to do FSL advising as a career.
“My favorite part of my job is working with students and watching them grow during their undergraduate career,” Smith said. “I believe that the most important part of my job is building relationships with the students that I work with, and I love to talk so it’s perfect.”
Smith said the biggest challenge of being the FSL advisor is appealing to current students. FSL was growing fast between the early 2000s and 2019, but COVID-19 affected the perception of FSL. Only 10% of the undergraduate students are involved in FSL, Smith wrote.
“Our office is strategizing and implementing new ways to educate students and families on the purpose and value of FSL,” Smith wrote. “Our students are developing more robust marketing strategies and branching out to reach students they may not have reached 4-5 years ago.”

Inside graduation celebrations and traditions
Katelin Potter | A&C Reporter
College graduation is often a pivotal point in the lives of the students. It marks the beginning of adult life for people who have spent the last 17 years in school. For many of this year’s May graduates, this will be the first time taking part in a proper graduation ceremony due to their senior year getting cut off by COVID-19.
This group of graduates will get to take part in all of the traditional celebrations they may have missed out on for their high school graduation, though this go around they’ll likely be able to legally drink the champagne that gets toasted in their honor.
The 90-minute commencement ceremony will be filled with a mix of celebrations, symbolism and traditions that go back hundreds of years such as the commencement address, which is typically given by the chancellor of the university, or the turning of the tassels which is a symbolic, ritual-like tradition that signals the
transformation of a student becoming a graduate. Even the traditional clothing graduates wear comes from medieval scholars in the 12th century.
In the 19th century, the style of cap and gowns shifted to the more modern style that we are used to today. The gowns went from being an everyday outfit for scholars to only being worn for special occasions. Tassels were added to the ensemble in 1885, which replaced the pompoms worn atop the hood. Caps, which are also known as mortarboards, went from being long hoods to becoming the flat, square caps we know and decorate today.
Unfortunately, App State does not want graduates to partake in the tradition of throwing graduation caps into the air after the ceremony in fear of injuring others. However, students can still check this off the list of graduation celebration activities once they’re outside of Holmes Convocation Center.
One tradition App State does stick
to is allowing graduates to decorate their caps as they desire. So long as there is no vulgar language or depictions, graduates are free to get as creative as they like.
An App State-specific tradition graduates are encouraged to partake in is the ringing of the Founders Bell after the commencement. Graduates can take a short walk across Rivers Street into Durham Park where they can ring the bell in celebration of all their hard work.
After the ceremony, friends and family are free to meet up with their graduates outside of the convocation center for pictures and celebrations. Pre-planning a spot to meet up after the ceremony can help find family and friends faster than searching through the masses.
Depending on the time of day the ceremony takes place, local restaurants will be packed in for the celebratory breakfast, lunch or dinner crowds. With this in mind, beware the flood of people and plan accordingly as
the weekend will be packed with long waits for a table and restaurant staff slammed with guests requesting speedy service. Remember to be nice to your servers as they too feel the chaos of the weekend filling their schedule.
As graduates reach the end of the ceremonious day, there tend to be celebrations held with family, friends and a bottle of champagne to pop open and make toasts. Whether they’re spending the night relaxing and recharging from the chaos of the ceremony or are partying into the night, all of App State’s graduates are sure to be celebrating in their own style.
With the end of their collegiate experience, graduates can begin to look ahead into the new chapter of their lives all of their hard work has led them to. For this one night, they can take a breath and rest easy knowing summer break has finally come.

Take a gap in your career while in Boone
Meg Frantz | A&C Reporter
The Boone Boomerang: a phenomenon reserved for a quaint mountain town in the top west corner of North Carolina, during which those who have graduated from App State return to Boone and experience the college-town lifestyle from a new perspective.
This phenomenon has called both recent graduates and professors back to the whispering mountain wind and the dining-hall-tray-sled winters. For some, however, the Boonerang hooks them in before they’ve even left Boone after graduation.
Take Sydney Bell, a recent public relations graduate, for example. Though she graduated in May 2023, she decided to take a gap year and work part-time at Abode Home Design before continuing her career.
I decided to take a gap year because I realized that I did not want to rush myself in finding a career job,” Bell said. “I think it’s important for everyone to have some sort of break, whether it’s a whole year or even just a few months or weeks. I’m still so young and did not feel the pressure of having a job lined up right after graduation.”
According to a Forbes survey of 1,000 college students, graduates and hiring managers, 78% of students felt taking a gap year helped them determine what they wanted to do with their career. Of the hiring managers, 67% believed gap years were beneficial and 80% believed them to have an impact on personal growth.
For those wanting a break before jumping into the workforce by taking a gap year after graduation or staying in Boone until their lease is up, Boone has much to offer in terms of ways to fill time without homework or class to attend.
Hiking
Since Boone is settled in the Blue Ridge mountains, various hiking trails are a short drive away. If one hasn’t had the chance to complete a Boone hike as a student, this time before you leave Boone is the time to do it. For one of Boone’s most popular overlooks, try out Rough Ridge Trail, a moderate level 1.5-mile hike just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Parking
is available at the parkway’s 302.8 mile marker, and the overlook is at a summit 4,773 feet above sea level.
For a hike featuring a waterfall, opt for Cascade Falls, located at mile marker 271.9. The trail is a 1-mile loop and features jagged-rock scenery and various greenery. According to exploreboone.com, it is heavily advised that hikers not climb on the rocks.
Jones House
Live music and a picnic are staples of Boone summers, and Jones House Cultural Center offers free concerts on its lawn starting June 7. According to the Jones House website, the concerts run weekly through August and showcase various local artists, ranging from jazz and folk to bluegrass. The concerts start at 5:30 p.m. and parking is available in metered spots close by.
High Country Beer Fest
At the end of August each year, the High Country Beer Fest returns to Boone, hosting various local breweries for those of age to explore. They also host local music artists and food vendors to build a festival-like atmosphere. This year, the 17th annual festival will be on Aug. 24. The festival is actively looking for volunteers for the day, and those interested can sign up here.
Farmers Markets
There are various farmers markets within Boone’s town limits, most notably the Watauga County Farmers’ Market. Every Saturday morning from May through November, local vendors gather off of Horn in the West Drive and offer fresh produce, locally sourced poultry and meat, fresh flowers and handcrafted jewelry and wood products. There are also live music and cooking demonstrations to indulge in.
Boone Blown
A recent addition to Boone, Boone Blown provides classes on glass blowing, where those interested in sculpture can learn about the science
behind glass and can make anything from a glass bead to a flower. The classes range from 30 minutes to 2 hours, with no experience required. Most are specific to certain styles of glass art, but there is an introduction course that covers the basics of glass blowing and lamp making.
Boone is catered toward the three main pillars of the college lifestyle: going to class, doing homework and being with friends. When those who are not in school are surrounded by the collegiate lifestyle, it can be disorienting, especially as a postgraduate student. Bell said, though, that her life doesn’t feel much different from what it was like while she was in school.
“If I could tell pre-grad me anything it would be not to stress so much about what is coming next,” Bell said. “There is nothing wrong with taking time off of school and giving yourself a break. My gap year has been one of the best years of my life. I have found hobbies and interests that I probably would not have found otherwise. Everything will work itself out when it is supposed to.”

Graduating international students say farewell to Mountaineer lifestyle
what people eat around here is not something we ate as a meal,” Onjiko said.
Patel said she had to find ways to make food she was more accustomed to when she first came to App State.
“It’s, like, all bland food,” Patel said. “So I used to buy spices from the nearby Indian store.”
“People over here are so nice and friendly that they would just try to communicate with you and don’t make assumptions of yourself or your culture and they try to get familiar with you.”

On Aug. 22, 2022, Silva Keohulian packed her bags, said goodbye to her family and left her home in Lebanon to go to a place she had never heard of before: Boone, North Carolina.
Keohulian is a 24-year-old Fulbright Scholar who is graduating with a master’s degree in mathematics from App State in May.
In the 2023-24 academic year, App State had 110 international students studying at the university, according to the international student and scholar services and outreach.
Fifty-eight of these students are on F1 student visas, which means they are pursuing degrees, like Keohulian. Fifty-two students are on J1 visas, attending App State as a part of an exchange program.
These students at App State joined more than one million students studying in the United States from around the world, according to
an open doors report, tracking international exchange programs in the United States. As the students at App State prepare to graduate in May, they reflected on their experiences studying in a new country and the lessons they plan to bring home with them.
According to the Fulbright website, Fulbright Scholars are chosen to “build their skills and connections, gain valuable international insights, and return home to share their experiences with students and colleagues.”
Each year, more than 1,700 Fulbright fellowships are awarded to students around the world and in the United States to study in universities, according to its website. Scholarships for the Fulbright program are fully funded by the U.S. Department of State.
Keohulian picked multiple
universities she was interested in studying but she was ultimately selected to go to App State.
“I haven’t heard of App State, honestly, but a friend of mine had been here and he talked good things about the department and everything so I put that on the list,” Keohulian said.
The Fulbright scholarship allows participants to apply to four universities they are interested in studying. Keohulian applied to Northeastern University, University of Chicago, University of Connecticut and App State.
The U.S. Department of State placed Keohulian at App State in order to increase diversity and cultural awareness, Keohulian said.
Other students, however, cite varying reasons for choosing App State when coming to study in the U.S. Vidhi Patel, a graduate student
from Khambhat, India pursuing a master’s degree in computer science, said she came to App State because of family connections in North Carolina.
“My aunt lives in North Carolina,” Patel said. “So I was trying to get nearby some places and then I came up to see this App State.”
Keohulian identifies as Lebanese Armenian and said she has faced difficulties at App State in preserving her cultural identity.
One difficulty Keohulian said was a struggle was with the food she could eat. She said it was hard to get the materials she needed to make food she was used to and often had to seek help from others to get ingredients.
Robert Onjiko, an international student from Kenya, said he experienced a similar struggle with food.
“I’m used to different things with what people eat around here and
Patel, Keohulian and Onjiko said they learned a lot about how to cook food from their respective countries when they came to the U.S.
“Hard times get the best out of you,” Keohulian said. “So I learned to be a chef, I went from beginner to like a top chef.”
In addition to the struggles of not having food to suit their palates, Keohulian and Onjiko said there were many misconceptions about their respective countries they tried to educate their peers on.
Keohulian recalls assumptions people made about her first time experiencing snow in Boone.
“It’s not my first time,” Keohulain said. “Lebanon is where you can go swimming and skiing in the same day.”
Keohulian said she could make a list of the misconceptions people in the U.S. have about Lebanon.
“The media always portrays bad things that we forget to see how rich the country is from nature, from the people,” Keohulian said. “The people are so generous, the food is so nice.”
Onjiko also said he had difficulty communicating with people because of his personality.
“Africans are extremely extroverted,” Onjiko said. “I found it really hard to interact with people and I started isolating myself because the Americans did not understand my culture and why I’m doing certain things.”
Patel said she struggled to make friends when she first arrived at App State.
“I was afraid because I thought about what they would think of me,” Patel said.
She said that if she spoke incorrectly, people would think she didn’t know specific little details.
Despite the challenges, Onjiko and Keohulian both said they are glad they came to App State. They said they are grateful to be able to form connections they otherwise would not have if they went to another university.
Onjiko graduated last year and works as a research technician in Boston as part of a program at App State that offers internships for

international students while they stay on their student visas.
Onjiko said he is grateful for the lifelong friendships he made at App State which he continues to keep in touch with during his internship.
“At App State, it’s a small tightlyknit community where people know people,” Onjiko said.
Patel shared the sentiment and said she was deeply impacted by the ways people treated her with kindness at App State.
“People over here are so nice and friendly that they would just try to communicate with you and don’t make assumptions of yourself or your culture and they try to get familiar with you,” Patel said.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Keohulian spent much of her time hosting events and educating people about Lebanese culture. She said she loved hosting dinners for friends to introduce them to Lebanese food.
“Once you’re passionate about sharing your culture it all comes naturally,” Keohulian said. “All you need is acceptance and someone to hear and I was able to find that here.”
Patel said she wants to stay in the
U.S. and get a job in the IT industry, as well as getting married to her fiance, who is studying in New York.
“I’m looking forward to staying over here in the USA and getting to explore more of USA culture and food and everything,” Patel said.
Onjiko and Keohulian both plan to go back to their countries and educate people about American culture as well as the things they learned while they were away.
Onjiko said he is hoping to pursue a doctoral degree at Harvard University, where he is a research assistant searching for a cure for malaria.
Onjiko wants to research a cure to the disease in Kenya to help friends and family who are suffering.
“Hopefully I can get back to my country and establish a lab over there, and, with the connections, the networks I already have and the knowledge, do more incisive studies and even collaborate with people working on the same projects here,”
Onjiko said.
Keohulian said she wants to become a math educator in Lebanon and help students cultivate a more
critical view of cultures, like the one she was able to develop in the U.S.
“I would go back to my home country and teach people about math, teach people about American cultures and the different misconceptions they have which are not true,” Keohulian said.
When Keohulian first arrived in the U.S., she said she struggled with a mix of feelings and being challenged by her own assumptions.
“Not everyone in the U.S. is a cowboy or an actor,” Keohulian said. “This is one of the misconceptions many people have.”
Keohulian said she found help in being kind to others and treating others with respect, which is something she plans to bring back to Lebanon with her.
“One of the most beautiful things is being enlightened about different cultures and different countries instead of just being limited to where we know because at the end of the day, we share a planet together,” Keohulian said.
“All you need is acceptance and someone to hear and I was able to find that here.”
- Silva Keohulian
Congratulations!
Congratulations on this remarkable achievement. Remember, graduation isn’t the end of a tough journey, it is the beginning of a beautiful one. As you embark on your own unique journey, your ability to soar is limitless. Fly high Mountaineers!

CJ Boyd pursues App State hitting records
App State baseball isn’t the most well-known sport on campus; it doesn’t have the illustrious history of the football program or the recent success of the basketball program.
However, senior outfielder CJ Boyd is making the case for the baseball team to garner some well-deserved attention.
Boyd began his sports journey playing football, but after suffering a broken collarbone in his first game, his parents decided they didn’t want him to play anymore. Boyd and his parents decided he should play baseball.
Boyd enjoyed a successful high school career at Ronald Wilson Reagan High School in Pfafftown, earning all-conference honors his junior year, and was ranked the No. 18 prospect in North Carolina by Perfect Game.
After graduating high school in 2020, he enrolled at East Carolina, coincidentally rooming with current Mountaineers teammate, redshirt junior third baseman Austin St. Laurent.
He didn’t get much playing time with the Pirates, totaling 43 at-bats, six hits, one homer and two RBIs in two years, as well as 2.2 innings of work as a relief pitcher.
After the 2022 season, Boyd transferred from ECU.
“It just wasn’t a fit for me,” Boyd said. “It was nothing against anyone over there, it just wasn’t where I was happy and I wanted to be happy playing.”
After enjoying a visit to Boone, Boyd decided to transfer to App State, joining his younger brother, redshirt freshman pitcher Carter Boyd.
“When he got here he was a little
more mature than he was when I left,” St. Laurent said. “Especially in his playing ability and growing into his body a little bit.”
This increased maturity seemed to pay off in his first season in the High Country, as CJ Boyd got off to a good start.
He didn’t start the season at the record-breaking pace he would finish it in, but during the second half of the season, something clicked.
“Nothing really changed, just changed the approach a little bit,” Boyd said. “Backed up the timing a little bit, I was a little out in front early in the year, so I moved it back a little bit and that’s where all the success started.”
Boyd finished the season playing at a historic level, hitting 12 homers in the last 16 games. He finished the season with 17 homers, tying the single season school record.
“Funny thing is, I didn’t even know about that,” Boyd said.
He said Matt Present, an assistant director of strategic communications for App State Athletics, told him after the game that he tied it.
“I had literally no idea that I was even close to it,” Boyd said.
Boyd wasn’t just a power hitter last year, either. He had one of the most productive all-around offensive seasons in school history, hitting .364, with a 1.111 OPS and 54 RBIs to go along with the 17 homers.
Boyd’s success also had an impact on the rest of the team.
“I feel like it pushed us as a unit to go out there and play like he was playing,” St. Laurent said.
While they had a successful year, Boyd and the team felt they had
unfinished business after 2023, when they failed to achieve their goal of a College World Series appearance.
“Whatever did happen went away as soon as we lost,” Boyd said.
Boyd and the team’s goals for 2024 are similar to 2023, to win their conference, win the regionals and super regionals and make it to Omaha.

Kayt Houston caps off record-breaking career for App State Softball
Max Schwanz | Sports Reporter
Senior outfielder Kayt Houston is a few weeks away from wrapping up a historic App State softball career.
Houston has earned numerous awards for her play on the diamond. As a sophomore, Houston was named to the All-Sun Belt first team and received NFCA All-Region honors, becoming the first player in program history to receive this honor. However, Houston is more focused on remaining grateful for the opportunities she has been given.
“Obviously it is really nice to get those accomplishments, but it is more about having fun,” Houston said. “I just look forward to going to practice and playing games every day.”
After her junior season, she was named to the All-Sun Belt second team and ranked top five in the conference in batting average, hits, doubles and on-base percentage. Houston does not linger on these accomplishments and takes a onegame-at-a-time mentality.
“I focus on one game at a time because you really never know what can happen,” Houston said. “One game you could be seeing the ball really well and then something will change and you won’t see it very well.”
Head coach Shelly Hoerner reiterates this point.
“It is not about anything other than that next game,” Hoerner said.
Houston’s strong play as the leadoff hitter has allowed the Mountaineers offense to thrive. So far in her senior season, she has a .434 batting average. Houston’s batting average has increased each year and she attributes this success to her practice, but also to her teammates.
“Staying relaxed and having fun with my best friends on the team really helps me out,” Houston said.
Hoerner has played a pivotal role in Houston’s success, having coached collegiate softball for over 25 years. She prides herself on being a players’ coach, and building individual relationships with each of her players while preparing them for life after softball. This has allowed for a strong bond between Hoerner and Houston.
She often compares the game of softball to life lessons. This has allowed for players such as Houston to grow on and off the field.
Hoerner applauded Houston for how she has changed over the years as a player and a person.
“If I look at Kayt Houston and how she was as a freshman and how she is now, she could handle hard way better than she could when she was a freshman,” Hoerner said.
Houston has received strong praise from her fellow senior outfielder Abby Cunningham.
“I think Kayt is like the pictureperfect teammate,” Cunningham said. “If anything, having her as my best friend can be even more.”
Cunningham also praised Houston’s strong leadership skills. She’s a spark on the field, and even when she is having a tough time at the plate she is there to keep her teammates motivated.
Houston and Cunningham focus on being leaders on and off the field for the younger players on the team.
“Doesn’t matter if you’re a senior or a transfer or just a freshman, everyone is a leader in their own way,” Houston said.
This philosophy is ingrained in the culture of the App State softball program.
“Just being a little bit older you already have some of that respect from the younger players, so it gives you a lot more confidence to speak up,” Cunnigham said.
Houston was a part of the program’s first win against a ranked opponent when they defeated No. 23 Louisiana on the road on March 25, 2023.
“The energy was something that was so incredible,” Houston said. “There is not really a feeling that you can compare it to.”
Cunningham had a huge role in the win as well. She recorded two of the final three outs to secure the win.
“I feel like everyone contributed to that game whether it was a walk or playing defense. I will never forget the energy we had that game,” Cunningham said.
As a senior, Houston focuses
on having fun and taking in every moment, no matter how small.
“I really focus on having fun and making sure I am not super stressed up to bat or even in the field, just staying even keeled,” Houston said. “Since it is our last year, our big mindset is just to encompass having fun and enjoying every single little moment because it is the last time, but we do not focus on it being the last time.”
Hoerner commended Houston’s ability to remain composed through the ups and downs.
“She is a very positive person and doesn’t carry much negativity from one at bat to the next or one play to the next,” Hoerner said.
The idea of having fun is a team-wide aspect. They focus on enjoying the process, allowing the ability to power through difficult times.
“We talk about as a team when you go back to why you started playing the game it was because you had fun,” Hoerner said. “When I came into the program seven years ago, I looked at that team and I said we will win and winning is fun.”
The team focuses on giving everything they have day in and day out for the person next to them.
Houston plays a pivotal role in keeping a light hearted fun atmosphere but not taking away from the competitiveness and hard work needed to be a successful team.

With summer approaching and the collegiate sports season nearing an end, senior App State athletes will walk across the graduation stage with diplomas in-hand, wondering what the future holds for them. A former Mountaineer running back is an example of how the journey after graduation for college athletes is an uphill climb to the mountain top.
Cam Peoples, a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management Spring 2022 graduate has made an impact off the field as a financial representative, while continuing his football career at the professional football level.
“I’m definitely gonna take on the task of doing both,” Peoples said about his plan for the present and future. “I already know what I’m gonna do next and I know what I’m doing now.”
Since last suiting up for the Black and Gold in 2022 and finishing a 2,830 rushing yard and 33 touchdown collegiate career, Peoples declared for the NFL Draft and signed with the Carolina Panthers after the draft. He received the call from former Panthers running backs coach Duce Staley, getting the opportunity to remain in the Carolinas after a five-year App State career.
“He lets me know that they wanted me to come play for him, and I was all for it,” Peoples said.
Following the agreement, Peoples participated in a rookie mini-camp before the start of organized team activities. Once OTAs began, Peoples connected and competed alongside fellow Panthers running backs Miles Sanders, Chuba Hubbard, Raheem Blackshear and Spencer Brown.
After OTAs, the off-season grind continued as Peoples trained with rookie quarterback Bryce Young in Texas before the two-week long NFL training camp in Spartanburg, South Carolina at the beginning of August.
“He’s a big, strong guy,” said former Panthers head coach Frank Reich. “I want to see him with the pads on, and see if he can do any damage. I’m looking forward to that.”
At the end of training camp, the
Football, finance:

three-week long NFL preseason kicked off, but as each game passed, Peoples was not receiving much utilization, realizing the Panthers were going to go in a different direction.
Carolina waived Peoples August 26, making him a free agent. After a couple of weeks, he conducted a workout with the Atlanta Falcons, but didn’t hear anything back.
“It was a humbling experience, to say the least, but it was definitely well needed,” Peoples said.
While it wasn’t the outcome Peoples wanted, he and his agent formulated a game plan together for what was next.
Throughout his time with the Panthers, Peoples met with financial advisors from March to July, and connected with Northwestern Mutual to learn how everything works and put together a plan.
“Instead of starting with your finances, our advisors start with you designing your plan around your priorities to help you reach your goals while protecting everything you’ve worked so hard for,” stated Northwestern Mutual’s website.
After being waived, Peoples reconnected and was set up in Charlotte to go through the interview process, went through an MPA and attained other licenses to get started.
“I’ve always been interested and fascinated with how money works, but also being able to help people is always a big thing of mine,” Peoples said.
Once he started, the day-today work included reaching out to people and forming connections on a personal level to not only discuss financials, but to “just talk.” When a day includes meetings, Peoples finds out their goals and plans accordingly to find what a client is looking for.
“It’s just a grind,” Peoples said. “It is almost like football.”
Peoples’ inspiration to become a financial advisor comes from knowing where he and the demographic came from to educate “ourselves” on money.
“It’s just because they’re in an area where they’re financially secure, and they’re not afraid to expand
their knowledge on money,” Peoples said. “A lot of people where I come from, and especially in the African American community, are afraid to open up about money.”
Stemming from the motivation of wanting to make it into the NFL and profit as a player, he’s aimed to provide for his family to be “the caveat that we never had.” His motive has always been to put his family, his people and his community in the best possible position.
While Peoples discovered a passion off the field, he continues to pursue financial advising during and after his professional football career. One of his long-term goals is building a team around him and having his own firm to continue to help people understand how money should work and how it will benefit their entire family.
In the meantime, Peoples continues advising while playing at the professional level as he signed with the Edmonton Elks for the upcoming summer CFL season.
“I’m looking forward to getting there,” Peoples said. “It really means just a new opportunity and a chance to keep playing the game that I love.”
Playing for the Elks will be Peoples’ first time out of the country as he’ll play all across Canada during the 21-week season.
“I don’t think there’s a day since I’ve signed where I haven’t said the word Canada,” Peoples said.
Before signing with the Elks, Peoples trained alongside former Mountaineers running back Darrynton Evans. Opinion: Moving after graduation is not such a bad thing
El Shedrick | Opinion Writer
For students graduating in May, the prospect of finding a job after graduation can be daunting. Whether graduates are staying in Boone to work, or moving to a new city to find a job there, this process is difficult for everyone.
Graduates are faced with a completely new stage of life and thrown into a job market they may know nothing about. This is made even more intimidating by the lack of jobs available in Boone compared to other larger cities. Boone has many part-time job opportunities, but not enough full-time jobs to account for the amount of students who graduate each year.
After spending four years in Boone for school, it is unlikely graduates will want to stay in town after getting their degree. In the case that graduates do want to stay,
Ever ything is going to be OK.
finding somewhere to live isn’t an easy task. Housing in Boone is designed for students who want to live with other students. A lot of the apartment complexes in Boone are student-only locations. Once someone is no longer a student of the university, it becomes increasingly difficult to find a place to live. For those who want to stay, there is competition for jobs not only against other graduates but also against current students.
The reality of the situation is that Boone is a college town. Unless graduates are planning for future schooling or to get a part-time job while taking a gap year, Boone is really not equipped for the graduate job market. An occupation that illustrates this well is teaching.
Education majors typically have to student-teach before they are able to graduate. Most of these students end up moving down the mountain or commuting in order to teach. The
teaching program is so large, it is hard for everyone to find a local placement to teach. If student teaching isn’t attainable in Boone, full-time teaching won’t be much easier.
In addition to teaching, electronic media and broadcasting majors also don’t have good job prospects in Boone. There are no TV opportunities besides student media, so any other opportunities will be few and far between. These are just some of the majors that do not have adequate job opportunities in the Boone area. Due to the availability of jobs in bigger cities, it may actually be a positive thing for students to move out of Boone after graduation. Despite it being scary, it may be beneficial in the long run.
When students first graduate, they have the most personal freedom. Graduates are no longer tied to the
university and have the opportunity to explore the country and the rest of the world. Launching a career is much easier when one has the ability to shop around for jobs across the country. In addition, moving may help new graduates learn more independence. Being away from the close-knit community of a college town may help foster a sense of responsibility as well.
Additionally, if graduates are moving far away from their families, they will no longer be able to rely on their parents for help. Although sad, it offers the opportunity for one to create their own schedule and method of doing things, free from the judgments of others. This also helps individuals come into their own and discover their likes and dislikes, personal style and favorite hobbies without the judgment of other people.
Exploring a new city allows graduates to broaden their perspectives. Each state and city has its own unique community and culture, and a change in atmosphere may be a refreshing option after living in a college town for a while. This is also a chance to meet new people and join new organizations and groups that may not have existed in the Boone area. As much as App State tries to foster diversity, the town of Boone is predominantly white. Moving out of Boone will likely provide an opportunity to live among a more diverse population and learn about a variety of different experiences and cultures.

Opinion
Leah’s Lens: The understated accomplishments of graduates
Leah Boone | Opinion Editor
As graduation approaches, thousands of students are prompted to reflect on their time at App State. Whether it be asking where you’re going after graduation, the cords you have or if you’re graduating with honors, most of the conversation tends to be focused on academic accomplishments. While these are important and something to be proud of, the true successes occurred throughout the years prior.
For years, graduation has fostered conversations surrounding academic achievements. Did you get into all the graduate schools you applied to? What job do you have lined up?
These questions can often feel overwhelming, as if you are expected to have your life planned out as a 22-year-old. These conversations can also invalidate all of the struggles you went through to get to this point.
During one’s time in college, there is a strong chance one survived horrible professors, nightmarish roommates, mental health struggles and a global pandemic. These trials and tribulations are not for the faint of heart and are surely more difficult to navigate than some academic aspects.
According to a 2022 study conducted by the National College Health Assessment showed that almost 80% of college students suffer from some sort of mental health struggles during their college career, whether it be anxiety, depression or something else. Going to a new place to start a completely new chapter of your life can be terrifying, so it makes sense that a lot of students would have a difficult time adjusting.
Though some may see this as part of the college experience, it should not be normalized as such. Being able to continue day-to-day life while going through mental health
struggles is a feat in and of itself. Doing so on top of the everyday life of a college student is an even larger accomplishment.
The average college student takes around 12-15 credit hours in one semester. Most college courses are three credit hours each, meaning a student is expected to study for three hours per credit, totaling nine hours outside of the class period. This means if a student is taking four three-credit courses for a total of 12 credit hours, that is 36 hours of studying outside of the class.
This is already a lot to ask for someone who is as happy as a clam, but for someone with other hardships occurring, it can be near impossible. Getting to graduation through this adversity is something to be extraordinarily proud of.
Another obstacle college students face is the dreaded roommate. Around one third of students have issues with a roommate at some point in their college career. These issues can span from something mundane, such as a roommate who is not as clean as you, or something much more serious, like differing political beliefs or patterns of bullying.
Even though having a bad roommate doesn’t seem like a huge challenge at first, thinking about it in the context of having to live in a shoebox-sized room with someone you don’t get along with puts it into perspective.
Being able to successfully complete classwork while wanting to rip your hair out because of your roommate should be celebrated, but it is yet another thing many people deem normal in college.
Nearly every student also has a horror story about a professor — maybe it was one who taught a gen ed writing class that was too big for his britches, or maybe it was the last class required for your major that took
every ounce of your strength to get through. Regardless, a bad experience with a professor can certainly be a blockade in remaining successful during an undergraduate career.
On top of personal struggles, way too much homework and intolerable roommates or professors, many of the students graduating from App State this May were freshmen during the height of COVID-19. Yet here they are, having made it to the other side. Coming to college as a freshman is daunting in and of itself, but doing so without the opportunity to meet new people, attend class in person or have any sense of normalcy, is another thing entirely.
While academic achievements should be celebrated, they should be accompanied by all of the external factors that each graduate pushed through to get to where they are now. The common conversations and questions surrounding the time of graduation should not be the only things people deem important.

A&C you later
Briley Turpin | A&C Editor
Four years ago, I started college…then I blinked.
At 18, I was suffocated by the small town life I was accustomed to and couldn’t wait to leave and make my mark on the world. I’d pictured my college experience for my entire life, but let me tell you what: I had never imagined the start of my college career would be hallmarked by masks, isolation and the weight of a “new normal.”
I spent my first year at App State grasping at straws to find a place for myself. I didn’t know a single soul in Boone when I moved here, and the few friends I had managed to make in the midst of a pandemic went home every week. But as the veil of uncertainty lifted around the pandemic, App State slowly returned to normal activities. It was during this time that I first stumbled upon the newsroom. I anxiously walked into a packed open house, curious about The Appalachian and excited about
Snapshot!
K. Slade | Visual Managing Editor
When people ask me why I chose to be the Visual Managing Editor of The Appalachian, my knee-jerk reaction is to say “I like being in charge.” Everyone who knows me can attest to how much of a control freak I can truly be. It’s true, I crave the power that being a senior editor grants me.
It’s a deflection — a defense mechanism. The authority, the meticulous process of editing and reshaping stories, is something tangible to control. Journalism is a medium for all, but The Appalachian is uniquely mine.
I hide behind my words, my camera and my flimsy lavalier microphone. I lose myself in memories of the shakiness of my knees — the loss of conviction in my voice. I look back at who I once was, a reporter, editor and Appalachian community member. Memories fade and warp, but stories remain far beyond our physical bodies.
Narratives are always suspended in time — a snapshot ready for you to relive. The Appalachian is my time capsule.
App State, at The Appalachian, cataloged this era of myself. The unsure freshman huddled in her dorm room during the height of the pandemic. The sophomore who took uneasy steps toward Plemmons Student Union room 217 for her first news meeting. The junior who finally slid into place here. And now, the senior who owns her worth and is unafraid of existing too close to others.
Every iteration of the woman you may know as “K. Slade” is sealed within my writing here at The Appalachian. She remains the mini adult navigating through the uncertainty of college. But, I will always be a proud member of The Appalachian and a sister to this community.
My time here seemed brief, a blip in the vastness of bound archives
and internet pages. But, I exist. A moment that slipped through my fingers before I could truly grasp what I had.
So, this is goodbye for now. Gone, but never forgotten. My melodramatic close to the platform and community who allowed me to stand alongside them, pen and paper in hand.
the prospect of becoming a budding journalist. Little did I know, it would be one of the best decisions of my college career.
The Appalachian has taught me about journalism, the ever-changing media landscape, the seemingly endless AP Style rules and how to interview strangers on topics they know more about than me. It has given me the chance to share humancentered stories, to highlight the highs and lows of this little mountain community and to guide a group of ambitious and talented writers. There aren’t enough words for everything
The Appalachian has taught me about journalism, but there are even fewer words for what it has taught me about myself. Reflecting on my time here fills my heart with emotions I never would’ve expected three years ago.
This farewell is the definition of bittersweet. To the lovely editorial board who supported me throughout the year, we did it! To Abby, my wonderful associate, thank you for
being my biggest cheerleader. I can’t wait to see everything you accomplish as A&C editor. To the A&C desk, you guys are rockstars. You inspire me each and every day with your words of encouragement and the phenomenal work you produce. I cannot wait to see how far you go. And finally, to my friends who stayed by me when I canceled plans to interview for a story or cried about print deadlines: I’m so back baby!

In August 2021, I found myself heading toward my first club meeting tucked away in the back of the Plemmons Student Union in a hallway I had no idea existed. At that point in time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do during my time in school and was just looking for something to do.
Little did I know, I was taking the first steps toward one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Three years later, I’ve had the best seats in the house to some of the best moments in App State history. From court stormings to game winning field goals to upsets over ranked teams, not to mention the countless stories, hundreds of tweets and late nights spent writing and editing, I’ve gotten to experience it all through The Appalachian.
But all good things must come to an end. This is the way of things.
None of this would be possible
without the laundry list of people who’ve supported me. I cannot thank all of you enough and this is just a small token of my everlasting gratitude.
To my mom, dad and my two sisters Lauren and Brooke, y’all drive me insane at times, but I’m so fortunate we’re family.
To the friends I’ve made along the way, thank you for being a part of my journey and allowing me to be a part of yours. I can’t wait to see the next chapters being written in your stories.
To The Appalachian, thank you for teaching me about journalism, life and so much more. To everyone that’s been a part of the sports desk during my time, it’s been an honor.
I’m looking forward to what my future holds and hope to see the same stellar work being produced from the newsroom.
This is the way.
Trust the process
Chance Chamberlain | Associate Sports Editor
After my freshman year fall semester in 2021 as a statistics major, I made the drastic decision to instead pursue journalism, opening a Pandora’s box for the following years.
My journey began with App State Athletics, working alongside Matt Present and the baseball program during the 2022 season. Soon after, I was suggested to connect with The Appalachian’s former Sports Editor Dan Davidson, beginning my tenure on the sports desk.
From the LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan debates to the madness of football season, it never felt like work, but rather a true joy to work with my fellow sports nerds, who just so happen to be great writers too.
My first year as sports reporter was far from slow as the Mountaineers upset No. 6 Texas A&M, sending Boone into a football frenzy for the next week as College GameDay paid a visit. Off the football field, I was lucky enough to share the stories of
North Wilkesboro Speedway’s rebirth and connect again with App State baseball.
The following year, with Davidson’s departure, I got the opportunity to work alongside my partner in-crime and true friend, current Sports Editor Ethan Smith, as the Associate Sports Editor.
During the 2023 fall sports season, I lived a true dream of mine by covering App State football throughout their storybook year. While I was thankful for every moment I witnessed and wrote about the football team, I will never forget walking through UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus with Ethan in the pouring rain, remaining drenched up until halftime before the Mountaineers lost in overtime against North Carolina.
All in all, one three-worded phrase has always stuck with me and sums up my time as an App State student, a member of The Appalachian and whatever the future holds for me as a
sports journalist: trust the process, because when in doubt, the hard work and God will guide you in the right direction.
Lastly, I couldn’t do this without the support of my friends and family, especially my mom, Dallas, who’s always trusted my process no matter what obstacle may lie ahead of my dreams.

In 2008, I found myself at a crossroads — I needed to leave my job as a newspaper journalist, but what would be next?
I had spent three years of my undergraduate degree working in student media — as a photographer and photo editor at the newspaper, as a columnist and writer for the magazine and, as an art director and editor-in-chief for the literary & arts journal. I saw a job opening for a student media adviser at SCAD, and applied for it, even though I had no idea what exactly an adviser does.
What I’ve witnessed over the past 15 years at three different universities is that student media is often the only organization on a college campus that gives students autonomy — students decide what they want to cover, and they get to do it without prior review or other interference from the adults.
‘Escape from the Planet of the AP Style’
A new “Planet of the Apes” movie comes out the week of May 11. Normally, this would be cause to don my latex monkey suit, grab my notepad and drive over to the theater in time to review it by Monday.
Instead, that science-fiction epic is being overshadowed by something even more unreal: my graduation, which happens to be on May 11 too.
Instead of an ape costume, I’ll be wearing a much less glamorous cap and gown. Instead of going bananas for ape-on-ape warfare, I’ll be going home to Asheville, where I’m starting a new life as a “journalist” with a “career.”
My college days are behind me, and it’s time to hang up my The Appalachian tote bag and put on a new one with an NPR logo. Or something like that.
Reflecting on The Appalachian
means looking back on a newsreel of fond memories. You already know the college cliches about finding your place, discovering your people and learning a little something about yourself along the way. Those sayings are eternal for a reason. The Appalachian was that for me.
For instance, I made some great friends.
Ella Adams and I have driven to Arrakis and back with better conversation than “Dune” has dialogue.
Jenna Guzman was our editor-inchief of an amazing New York City sightseeing itinerary long before she was our Editor-in-Chief for real.
Briley Turpin cohosted seven episodes of a podcast with me.
K. Slade watched me drink 48 liquid ounces of water every staff meeting while I watched her crumble into madness as we tried to get a multimedia desk running. It got there.
Hannah, Aaron, Graham, Nick, Gabe, Kennedy and Ellie made for
an amazing team, and I was proud to edit their work. Especially when episodes of “Boone (Sports) Balls” blew my eardrums out or the podcasting room’s door wouldn’t close.
When I describe leaving The Appalachian as an “escape,” I’m not telling the truth. As journalists, it’s our responsibility to uphold certain standards of integrity, which is why I must tell you the title of this column is just a reference to 1971’s “Escape from the Planet of the Apes.” There’s no escaping here because if I can be truthful about one more thing, it’s that graduation doesn’t feel like an escape at all. Sure, I’m leaving, but the memories I’ve made will never leave me.
& Adviser to The
That autonomy grants students the incredible opportunity to learn and grow and develop in profound ways. They learn how to produce credible and ethical journalism, meet deadlines, be leaders, manage their peers and, respond to criticism, all the while balancing full class loads, parttime jobs and personal lives
Beyond that, they are learning in real time, producing work consumed by the outside world — very much breaking their test tubes in public, the ultimate experiential education opportunity.
While I’m not graduating, I am preparing for a career change — leaving full-time student media advising and leaving App State to transition into a faculty role at another institution. I will take with me into the classroom everything I’ve learned from my students over the years at The Appalachian, The Peel, and all the other student media outlets I’ve had
the opportunity to advise.
To my students and alumni near and far: please keep telling the stories worth telling, even when difficult, because what you do matters more now than ever.
