An App State Freshman runs for Kansas Governor Anna Muckenfuss│

M

ax Correa, an Appalachian State freshman, recently announced his candidacy for governor of Kansas. Correa is a biochemistry major and has no familial ties in Kansas, nor has he ever stepped foot in the state.

“When the opportunity arose for me to enter politics, I realized that I could make something out of this chance to run for governor,” Correa said. “The Kansas governing body shut down the idea of a dog running for office because it wasn’t a human being, but after looking into it and seeing there were no regulations regarding human candidates, I decided to launch my campaign.”

To run for the office of governor, several states have passed certain regulations and rules that must be followed in order for the candidacy to be accepted. According to their individual constitutions, six states require a candidate to be at least 18 to run, and two of those

states require that the candidates be a registered voter. South Dakota is the only state that requires a candidate to be 21 to run for the office of governor, while six states require an age of 25, Oklahoma requires an age of 31, and 34 states require an age of 30. Kansas and Vermont are the only states with no age requirement.

William Hicks, a professor of political science at Appalachian State, said that young people in North Carolina can run for office.

It all just depends on how you define “young.”

“To run for Governor in this state you have to be at least 30.

There aren’t strong reasons to assume, absent other information, that a 30-year-old is significantly more capable than a 29-yearold. Supporters of amending eligibility criteria like this would argue that whether or not a person is competent should be up to voters (not an arbitrary age requirement), and we shouldn’t limit the talent pool. I see some value in

this argument.”

“I admit that my weakness in this election would be my youth,” Correa said. “Some might think that just because I’m young and have no experience in politics that I won’t be able to do the job, but because I’m so young I have a fresh set of eyes. That being said, I can bring new ideals and policies that younger people have been pushing for that the baby boomer generation and Generation X and Y have not been able to accomplish.”

Correa’s campaign is designed to appeal to the younger generations that would begin voting during the election season. Correa’s campaign also draws elements from Jewish concepts he learned as a child. To help resolve conflict within the state legislature, Correa said he would use a concept called tikkun olam, which roughly translates to “repairing the world.” Correa also said he hopes to introduce the idea of communal settlements that can be

found in Israel called kibbutz.

“People within these communities would also work in the community,” Correa said. “I want to take this idea and mold it, so that families won’t have to pay thousands of dollars for their children to have a college education.

The kids can instead work part time and use the profits to go towards their tuition.”

If elected to the office of governor, Correa said he will drop out of App State and move to Topeka and enroll as a part-time student at the University of Kansas. With many issues to address as governor, Correa plans to devote time to the opioid crisis.

The opioid crisis has spread all across the country. According to North Carolina Health and Human Services, from 1999 to 2016, more than 12,000 North Carolinians died from opioid overdose.

To prevent more deaths by overdose, Correa said he wants to look to rural areas of the state.

“The opioid crisis is some-

thing that all Americans, regardless of identity or class, need to come together to fight. I hope to lower rates of overdoses by offering state-owned properties to pharmaceutical companies so as to reduce the cost of Narcan production, making the lifesaving medication both affordable and more available to Kansans and Americans writ large,” according to Correa’s campaign website.

Even though Correa launched his campaign before talking with him, Correa said Hicks influenced him to run for office.

“I’m happy to see that he (Correa) is becoming so involved in politics,” Hicks said. “I’m always in favor of young folks getting involved in politics. If nothing else, it teaches them valuable lessons about political processes.”

“I want to help Kansas become a powerhouse. I’m not afraid of getting a little dirt on my hands.

Regardless of who you are, I’ll fight for you,” according to Correa’s campaign website.

SGA PASSES BILL TO RENAME RESIDENCE HALLS NAMED AFTER WHITE SEPARATISTS Anna Dollar│

T

he Student Government Association passed a bill titled “The Renaming of Residential Halls Act of 2017” on Feb. 20 to change the name of two residence halls, Lovill and Hoey, on Appalachian State’s campus that were named after white supremacists.

Four students on SGA have been working on this bill.

On the east side of Appalachian State University’s campus, there are two residence halls named Lovill and Hoey, named after Edward F. Lovill, who served in the Confederate States Army according to NCPedia, and Clyde R. Hoey, a North Carolina governor who served from 1937 to

1941 who was for racial segregation according to North Carolina History.

Alan Lee, senior political science major and the student body vice president of SGA, decided to get senators to work on this bill because he said he believes that having buildings that serve as memorials to two men that did not stand for diversity goes against Appalachian State University’s mission statement’s focus on embracing diversity.

The four freshmen senators that passed this bill were Mildred Louis, pre-nursing major; Christina Nealy, middle grades education major; Travian Smith, political science major and Lauren Moody, political science major.

“The reasons we wrote this bill...is because Appalachian’s mission statement says they want to foster diversity and inclusivity on their campus and having two buildings named after segregationists does not promote that,” Louis said.

The senators conducted a survey to see what other students thought about this issue.

According to Nealy, 76.5 percent of people surveyed were unaware of the fact that Hoey and Lovill were named after two men who did not advocate for diversity, and 31.4 percent did not support renaming the halls.

In the process of renaming these buildings, the student body president of SGA Anderson Clayton, a junior double

major in journalism and political science, said that the naming committee will take into consideration a variety of things.

According to the SGA, they will look to not only rename the buildings after people that donated a certain amount of money, but also make sure that they are not prejudiced towards a certain group. Clayton said they want to make sure that the namesakes of our buildings represent what Appalachian stands for today and not 50 years ago.

“I want to make sure that every voice is being heard and that every student feels welcome here and that this is a space for them,” Clayton said.

Lee wanted the four senators to pass this because

he believes that the name of these two residence halls does not help make the marginalized students feel welcomed.

Lee came to this conclusion when he stayed in Lovill this past summer.

“There is literally a plaque that says that he is a confederate soldier, so being an African-American, that made me feel a little weird,” Lee said.

“I just care about Appalachian and I care (about) the experiences that I had feeling awkward and I would not want any other student to feel like that. You shouldn’t be thinking about that, you should be thinking about your next test.”

The name of the residence halls will be changed within the next few years.

e a r- p a n d e m i c levels of flu and influenza-like illnesses caused the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System to start limiting visitations at Watauga Medical Center, Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital and The Foley Center as

of Feb. 14, according to the Watauga Democrat.

The numbers for the flu have been higher this year. The number of cases of the flu at the university were also higher this year, Dr. Robert Ellison, director of Mary S. Shook Student Health Services at Appalachian State, said.

“We also had an earlier flu onset,” Ellison said. “Typically, the flu begins to show itself after two to three weeks of students coming back from Christmas break, and it seemed to be about a week earlier this year.”

Ellison said that the flu peaked on campus towards the

beginning of February.

“During that time, approximately 25 percent of everything we were seeing in clinic each day was flu or flulike in nature,” Ellison said.

“It was thought before the flu season really began that this was going to be a much heavier flu season across the

United States. Public health experts anticipated that, and correctly so.”

According to Dr. Kathleen Rayman, chair of the Department of Nursing at Appalachian State, the school gets information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which tracks national and international cases of the flu and keeps the data in order to make comparisons of each flu season.

“They try to make predictions about how they are going to set up the vaccines based on those data,” Rayman said. “But there are a lot of other things that figure into that whole scenario so it’s not a perfect science.”

Rayman said that the elderly, small children and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk for the flu. She also said the impact of the flu is different for anyone who contracts it.

“Treat it seriously. That’s why they tell you to get your flu shots. Just try to take precautions in terms of good, general health habits. That’s the best thing that you can do, which would be diet, exercise, stress reduction,” Rayman said.

WOMEN OF WALKER HOST “WOMEN IN BUSINESS” DISCUSSION PANEL Christina Beals│

I

n celebration of Women’s History Month, the Walker College of Business organization, Women of Walker, hosted a “Women in Business” panel in Kenneth E. Peacock Hall on March 1 to explore an array of topics relating to women in the business realm, ranging from obtaining valuable skills to the wage gap.

The summit event, hosted by Assistant Director of the Business Career Services Amy Odom, consisted of a panel of four local businesswomen.

The women featured on the discussion panel were Vice President of Sales for EnCompass Rx Rachel Clifton, General Manager for the Courtyard

by Marriott Jessica Smith and District Manager for E. & J. Gallo Winery Claire Duval.

The discussion began with an explanation behind the Women of Walker program.

“For those who may not know who Women of Walk-

er is, we are a professional development program for females in the Walker College of Business,” Odom said.

Odom said that the program started four years ago by computer information systems and supply chain management professor Dawn Medlin, who saw a need to specifically support women who were seeking a career in business.

The program provides workshops for professional and career skill development, and networking opportunities to connect members with employers.

The recommendation-based organization began with nine members and has grown to 22 active members.

Odom began the summit addressing statistics about women’s involvement across campus.

“56.5 percent of our student population are female.

When we get into the school of business, it’s a little less. 32.3 percent of females make up the students in the program,”

Odom said.

Odom said 41 percent of women are accounting majors, and an important question to be asked is why women in the school of business are drawn to it specifically.

Computer information systems was the lowest major with 14 percent.

Following the brief statistics presentation, the women’s panel introduced themselves and their respective college educations with each panel member being an Appalachian State alumni.

Posed by Odom, the first summit question pertained to a challenge that members may have had to overcome within their respective careers, how they overcame it and what knowledge they wish they had possessed so as to have avoided said challenge.

The vitality of mentorship in the business world was discussed, giving the opportunity for summit speakers to dis-

cuss mentors they have had and were key parts in their individual careers.

Rachel Clifton discussed a situation in her professional life when a co-worker was sabotaging conference calls with negative commentary, and Clifton sought out mentor figures she had formerly worked for.

“For the mentors that I reached out to, some of them were good and some were bad.

I reached out to them to get their advice and opinions, and I would start to understand how it worked for them and what they had done in certain cases,” Clifton said.

Clifton noted that though mentorship is important, one should detect the good qualities of good and bad mentors and embody said qualities as a professional.

Clifton spoke on the matter of maternity leave and its uniqueness in the sense that it is a factor in the workplace her male counterparts will never

have to personally face.

“I think that having strong female mentors is something that is very important, along with knowing that it’s just a part of life,” Clifton said.

Odom introduced a set of questions submitted by audience members before the summit.

This discussion was about what Women of Walker can do to effectively recruit students into the business program, with panel replies suggesting to expose potential members to as many facets of business as possible to make it easier to find one’s professional niche.

Clifton said that giving as many opportunities as possible, such as mentors and internships would be helpful to diversity among majors.

Along with summit meetings, according to the Women of Walker website, the organization hosts professional workshops throughout the year and advises on interview preparation and professional attire.

E

very offseason, transfers are becoming more and more common in college basketball. Players often attend a school right out of high school and quickly realize that they may not fit into a program, so they begin to explore their options in new destinations. Appalachian State has become the home of several players who previously attended other schools, and while their

pathways are all different, they all share a common destination.

Of the 16 players listed on the Mountaineers’ roster, seven of them played college basketball somewhere else before making the transition to Boone. Not only have they quickly blended in with their teammates and coaches off the court, but several of them have also made immediate impacts on the court.

is if they fit into our program.

Program meaning academically, and does he fit in with our guys in our locker room and what we’re doing in the community,” assistant coach Bryan Lentz said. “We don’t just look for super talented players to take if they don’t fit in with our program.”

The NCAA requires all undergraduate transfer athletes to sit out for a season if they are transferring into a Divi-

sion I school, but some players take different routes which results in them being immediately eligible. Athletes that attend junior colleges are eligible to play right away after transferring.

Sophomore guard O’Showen Williams is one of these players and is currently relishing in his new role at Appalachian State. He attended South Georgia State College for a year before making the switch and both

he and the team are benefitting from him being here.

Williams is averaging 7.7 points and 2.3 assists coming off the bench and is also one of the better 3-point shooters on the team, shooting an impressive 39 percent from behind the line. He brings a high level of intensity and toughness on the defensive end and can step up and lead the team when they need him most. He has shown this multiple times

this season, including a victory against the University of Texas at El-Paso, where he scored 19 points against Sun Belt conference opponent Coastal Carolina University where he posted a career-high 20 points.

“Playing at a JUCO (junior college) was kind of challenging because you don’t always have the same things you have at a regular college. It taught me how to be on my own after coming from my family’s house and living at a school by myself,” Williams said. “At a junior college, if you don’t have any offers after you leave the school, you’re done. So everyone was competing with

one another and some people might get jealous because you may have certain offers and they aren’t getting looked at by anyone at the moment.”

Redshirt senior forward Craig Hinton and redshirt sophomore forward Hunter Seacat had somewhat different experiences compared to Williams’. Hinton, who is a transfer from the Virginia Military Institute, has turned into a doit-all player for the Mountaineers. The athletic forward, who once participated in the American Family Insurance National Slam Dunk Contest, brings a strong defensive and rebounding presence along with

the ability to knock down late game shots in tight situations.

“There was an adjustment of course, but my teammates and coaches did a good job of welcoming me with open arms, and they tried to make it as easy as possible for me,” Hinton said.

Seacat was a mid-season transfer last year which allowed him to play in about half of the team’s games this season, and the team has benefitted from his presence on the court as well.

Even though his sample size is small, he makes the most of his time on the court, shooting 63 percent from the floor. The North Carolina native originally attended the College of Wil-

liam & Mary before transferring to Appalachian State.

“It helped having Trey Ford (his former high school teammate), and everyone on the team made it really easy for me, including the coaches,” Seacat said. “From the very beginning I wanted to go as a far away as I could, and when I transferred I definitely wanted to find a place closer to home. Every school has a lot to adjust to, but I really felt like it was an easy transition and it was like I’ve been here the whole time.”

This is not the only season where transfer players will play a role on the team. Next

year sophomore guards Joseph Battle, who previously attended University of Tulsa, and Michael Bibby Jr., who played one season at the University of South Florida, will be eligible to see court time and add to the Mountaineers’ backcourt, which is already deep.

The coaching staff has done well at not only recruiting talented players out of high school, but also creating environments where players with previous college experience feel welcome enough to make the decision to leave their current school and come to Boone, which has become a key factor in the team’s ongoing success.

pp State men’s basketball finished the regular season with a record of 14-17 overall and 9-9 in conference play, with a win against Coastal Carolina University on Senior Day. With the win, they finished fifth in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Mountaineers finished their best season under head coach Jim Fox, who is now 4578 with the Mountaineers. “[I am] obviously very pleased with our group. It’s been a season that we’ve really taken a giant step forward for

our program you know, and I couldn’t be happier,” Fox said.

The Mountaineers and Fox used the last two games to gain some valuable lessons and prepare for the upcoming Sun Belt tournament.

Senior forwards Griffin Kinney and Craig Hinton both said that ever since the Arkansas State game, they have been treating games like tournament games because in a tournament game, “a bad five minutes can be the end of our career here.”

The Sun Belt tournament, which took place March 7-11 in New Orleans, Louisiana,

featured App State as the No. 5 seed. They faced the No. 12 seed University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the first round of the tournament.

“You can’t in any way be content with where we are. We have to go home, watch film and meet tomorrow and get better and get ready to play,” Fox said after Senior Day. App beat Little Rock 93-64 in the first round of the tournament. Sophomore guard O’Showen Williams scored a career-high 22 points and freshman guard Justin Forrest scored 19.

App moved to the second round against the No. 4 seed UT Arlington and lost 84-68 finishing the season 15-18.

Kinny had 22 and Forrest had 17 to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. Georgia State later beat UT Arlington in the Sun Belt championship game and will be a No. 15 seed in the NCAA tournament.

“I want to thank my team & my staff for giving it everything they had this year. The excitement of Selection Sunday only reinforces our commitment 2 changing history for this basketball program. I

am excited for the future. Our name will be announced on Selection Sunday soon,” Fox said Sunday night on twitter.

Junior guard Ronshad Shabazz ended fifth in the Sun Belt in scoring at 18.5 points per game and sophomore forward Isaac Johnson finished tied for third in the conference with 8.4 rebounds per game.

“I’ve been apart of four different teams and just this team right here is definitely the most talented team I’ve been apart of and the closest as well off the court,” Kinney said on Senior Day.

A

n 8-23 record and a ninth place finish in conference play are the obvious things that come to mind when you think about the App State women’s basketball 2017-18 season. But they are not what define the season.

A key injury in the fall lead to tough beginnings for the Mountaineers. Senior guard Madi Story tore her ACL in an exhibition matchup with Tusculum College on Halloween, which forced her to miss the entirety of the season. In Story, the Mountaineers lost some of their only senior leadership on the court and a projected First-Team all-Sun Belt contributor. Later in the season, the Mountaineers would also lose redshirt sophomore guard Kaila Craven to injury for the sec-

ond straight year.

The Mountaineers were also exceptionally young this year, with six freshmen and four sophomores on a roster of thirteen players. Their youth did not stop some of the young players from having impactful seasons, however.

Sophomore center Bayley Plummer blossomed into an outstanding player this season.

During her freshman campaign, Plummer averaged 4.3 points per game and was second on the team in rebounds with 5.5 per game. This season she elevated her play to a new level, doubling her scoring average to nine points per game and grabbing a whopping 11.5 rebounds per game. Her efforts were good enough for a Third Team allSun Belt appearance. She was one of only four sophomores in the conference to receive post-

season recognition.

Several freshmen also had good opening seasons for App State this year. Guard Tierra Wilson led the team in total minutes with an average of 34.1 per game and also in free throw percentage with .811.

Guard LaPresha Stanley had the highest 3-point percentage of any Mountaineer by more than eight percent, while leading the team in scoring average with 11.4 points per game. Forward Lainey Gosnell did a little bit of everything, averaging a respectable 7.7 points per game to go along with four rebounds (good for fourth on the team) and eighteen total steals.

Two of App State’s roster this year were transfer players. Sophomore guard Nicola Mathews had a solid debut season for the Mountaineers, shooting nearly 38 per-

cent from the field and leading the team by 25 in total assists with 94. Junior guard Anna Perez-Gomez averaged only 7:30 minutes per game this season but made the most of them, draining 50 percent of her 32 shots and adding 18 rebounds and 16 assists.

While the Mountaineers went only 5-13 in conference play this year, they did end on a high note. They were tabbed as the ninth-seeded team in the Sun Belt tournament and matched with the eighth-seeded Arkansas State Red Wolves, who were defeated by only 2 1/2 weeks prior.

App State had a stellar showing, with four players in double digits in the scoring column, including career-highs for Stanley with 27 and Plummer with 18. Plummer also pulled down 19 re-

bounds while the Mountaineers outrebounded the Red Wolves as a team by nearly 20.

The Mountaineers came away with the upset, 79-68 to move on to the Sun Belt quarterfinals. It was here that they would meet their season’s end, taking a loss to the No. 1 seeded Little Rock Trojans 66-34.

It is easy for someone to look negatively upon this season for App State women’s basketball, but with youth and key injuries getting in their way, it is impossible not to also take positives away. With the prospect of returning almost their entire roster for next season, including key injured players in Story and Craven and the addition of transfer redshirt junior Ashley Polacek, the Mountaineers are poised to make 2018-19 a banner season.

fter a strong 2017 season, the Mountaineers clinched a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship for the second time. This recent success has helped the Mountaineers when it comes to the recruiting trail and gaining some national exposure and attracting a higher caliber of recruits. The class currently consists of several three-star recruits and currently ranks 111th in the nation.

Possibly the most hyped recruit of the class so far is the dual-threat, 6 feet, 5 inches, 220-pound quarterback Stephon Brown. Brown is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is a product of Robert B. Glenn High School, where he finished a terrific career, accumulating 108 touchdowns and 10,000

passing yards before making a Shrine Bowl appearance.

Brown’s recruitment also could not come at a better time for the Mountaineers as the team is currently in search for star quarterback Taylor Lamb’s replacement.

“It’s very hard to fill those shoes, but I just plan to come in and do whatever my team needs of me,” Brown said.

Brown understands the circumstances of his recruitment and that he is in a competition to be the starting signal caller to open the season. The competition seems to be the last thing on Brown’s mind, however, as he is looking to go out and do whatever the team asks of him.

this coming year and is well in the running to obtain the starting gig.

The Mountaineers also added to their deep linebacker corps. with the addition of outside linebacker Tyler Bird. Bird is a 6 feet, 1 inch 210-pound two-star recruit from Georgia. He comes in as a speedy sideline-to-sideline coverage linebacker with solid tackling ability.

“I ran the same defense in high school. I watched and studied a lot of these guys in high school, so when they offered I was really honored to be a part of that history,” Bird said.

Bird comes in at a position that is very deep for the Mountaineers with several upperclassmen as well as other recruits at the position.

With the speed and high football IQ that he possesses he

may work his way into a couple of games and will almost certainly contribute in some way on special teams.

With the Mountaineers bringing in a new quarterback, it is best to surround whoever it is with the correct weapons, which is exactly what three-star tight end Trey Ross will provide.

From Sophia, North Carolina, the 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 230-pound pass catcher will give whomever is throwing the ball a big target with a huge catch radius.

Ross comes to a position that already has two upperclassmen above him on the depth chart, but due to his solid receiving ability he very possibly could find his way on the field in obvious passing downs and in result of any injury.

“I would say my player

comparison is probably someone like Travis Kelce. He’s a rangy pass catcher with speed that can move in and block if needed,” Ross said.

Ross said he sees himself as more of a pass catching tight end but does not want that to be the only thing he is valued as. He has expressed interest in working to become a better blocker, so he can stay on the field as a three-down player.

The Mountaineers bring these recruits as well as several others into the 2018 season hoping to replicate their success of the seasons past.

The coming season will come with much anticipation as the Mountaineers search for Lamb’s replacement and begin their journey for a third straight Sun Belt Conference championship.

fter a forgetful 2016 campaign resulting in a 15-18 record, the Mountaineers men’s basketball team had no choice but to hit the recruiting trail in search for help. This was found in the form of a 6 feet, 2 inches tall guard named Justin Forrest from Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy in Decatur, Georgia. Forrest had an extremely successful high school career, where he was once named first-team all-state and led his team in back-to-back state championships during his junior and senior seasons.

these things factor into the recruiting process,” Coach Jim Fox said.

The traits that got Forrest recruited to App State have shown immensely through his first year on campus.

Forrest routinely shows the confidence he possesses while playing, often leading the team down the court and showing no hesitation when it came to putting up his shots. His skill set was also on full display in his first year leading the team with 42 steals and finishing second on the team with 13.5 points per game behind team leader junior guard Ronshad Shabazz.

“It’s made me become a leader. He’s been here the past two years and is the leader of this team, and he’s forced me

to be vocal and accountable on and off the court,” Forrest said.

“The work ethic, you have to start working harder in college playing back-to-back games makes you take better care of your body a lot better.”

The transition from high school to college is often seen as a huge obstacle, especially for athletes as they become accustomed to the speed of the college game. Oddly this is where Forrest has excelled, often not even looking like a freshman on the court.

He gives teammate and fellow guard Shabazz credit for helping with his smooth transition.

Shabazz in his third year provided Forrest with a template to model his game after and pushed him to step up and be a leader not only on the court but off the court as well.

On top of this, Forrest embraced the idea of a hard work ethic during the transition.

Forrest understood that college basketball would impose many more challenges than high school such as back-tobacks and long road trips. To counteract these challenges, taking care of the body is vital which is something Forrest takes great pride in.

“We can’t get him to be quiet, he’s always talking. Normally freshmen are shy, but he’s just the opposite. A great teammate and locker room guy,” Coach Lentz said.

His locker room leadership has been as equally as impressive as any other accomplishments he has had. No matter the scenario or the struggles Forrest faced, one thing remained steady, his vocalized

leadership. As a freshman, it is rare to see such a vocal player, but this is exactly what Forrest provided. During the rough stretches of the season he was always bringing in a positive attitude and trying everything to right the ship.

In a season in which the Mountaineers needed a rebound, they got it. While the record may not have improved, they were able to add good young talent that will grow and progress in their system. Forrest will return with an entire offseason of development and a full season of experience under his belt. The pairing of a more experienced Forrest with another strong recruiting class, and all but one starter from last year’s squad, the Mountaineers could be a team to watch in 2018.

he Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, and the center celebrated in style on March 2 as part of its Spring Exhibition Celebration.

The Turchin Center invited the public to spend the Friday night listening to live music, eating hors d’oeuvres and exploring the center’s five open exhibits.

Director of Arts Engagement and Cultural Resources Denise Ringler said the celebration was a perfect time to capture the essence of the Turchin Center’s main mission: connecting campus and the community through the arts.

“We love the fact that we are located right on the cusp of campus and community.

We love the fact that we’re in downtown Boone,” Ringler said. “We want to be that bridge. That’s another part of that strategic mission that we know as part of our mandate

for the next 15 years, to really think about bridging the campus and the community through the arts and bringing people together around their shared love of the arts.”

Ringler said that their monthly First Friday celebrations like this one, as well as the 12 exhibitions on average that the Turchin Center holds each year, help foster opportunities to celebrate and learn about the arts in the community.

“You feel that energy at events like tonight when you see students alongside community members all just enjoying art together. It makes you realize how much is possible in terms of the arts playing a real role in this community,” Ringler said.

“Pieces of the Puzzle: Turchin Center Outreach Programs” and the 15th annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition and Exhibition were both opened to the public March 2. One of two

Faculty Biennial exhibitions was also unveiled on March 2 at the Smith Gallery; the first half of the exhibition opened at the Turchin Center on Feb. 2.

“Pieces of the Puzzle: Turchin Center Outreach Programs” showcases works gathered from some of the many outreach programs the Turchin Center hosts to connect the community with art.

Participating outreach programs include “Hidden Talents: Emerging Artists of Junaluska,” which features clay and painting from the women of the African-American Junaluska community and “Healing Arts,” which offers expressive opportunities to homeless children and adults at the Hospitality House of Boone.

Twelve outreach programs are featured in the exhibition, which connect with libraries, community centers and organizations throughout the area to provide students and community members with expressive

arts resources.

“There are many pieces of the puzzle, many aspects of the Educational Outreach Programs at the Turchin Center for Visual Arts,” outreach coordinator Pegge Laine said on the Turchin Center’s website. “Each piece strengthens community participation in the arts by creating an environment in which individuals of all ages experience the power and excitement of creating art in community. The community outreach exhibit celebrates the process of art making, of free play that participants experience when they respond to color, texture, and design in the world around them.”

“Pieces of the Puzzle: Turchin Center Outreach Programs” will be available to the public through June 2.

The Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition and Exhibition was also unveiled the day of the spring celebra-

tion. This year is the 15th anniversary of the photography competition as well.

The AMPC received 1,082 entries, and 56 finalists were chosen for display in the exhibition. Winners will be chosen in six themed categories as well as Best in Show and People’s Choice.

Photographer and App State adjunct instructor Lynn Willis shared three photos in the exhibition this year. Willis said he has participated in the competition almost every year since its beginning, with the exception of the AMPC’s first year.

One of his pieces submitted this year, “Total Eclipse Composite,” is a photograph Willis said took a special level of preparation, shooting and editing. Willis said he and his family spent the evening on his friend’s property, witnessing the event and shooting photos.

Willis estimated that he took approximately 250 photos during the eclipse and had

Though the process took a lot of work, Willis said that focusing on actually experiencing and enjoying the event was equally important to him.

“It was just a great experience in general, especially being able to witness it with my family and my sister’s family,” Willis said. “We’re already planning for the next eclipse in six years.”

Willis has been photographing for over 20 years and said his favorite subjects include landscapes and outdoor adventure photography.

Through his 14 years photographing for the AMPC, Willis said that the talent and the competition have grown.

“It’s a lot harder every year to get into this photo competition, because it’s not only photographers from this local area or regional area, there are photographers from around the

country who submit photos for this,” Willis said.

The AMPC photos will be available for viewing through June 2, and Turchin Center visitors are encouraged to participate in the People’s Choice selection through March 23, before winners are announced on March 24.

An ongoing exhibition, Appalachian State’s Faculty Biennial features the works of 31 Appalachian State faculty and staff members; the Faculty Biennial exhibition is comprised of two galleries and is a collaboration between the Turchin Center and the Smith Gallery.

The Turchin Center’s exhibition features 29 artists and was officially opened on Feb. 2.

At the Smith Gallery, located in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts, another 18 artists’ works were unveiled on March 2. The Smith Gallery held its own reception that night to celebrate the ex-

hibition’s opening.

Travis Donovan, an assistant professor of sculpture at App State, presented two pieces in the Turchin Center’s exhibition. Both explore motion and kinetics in some form, with his multimedia presentation “Rain” utilizing moving water and video, and “Life Beer” using electromagnetism to rotate and suspend a crushed can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer in midair.

In “Rain,” perpetual rainfall pours from a suspended, multi-colored umbrella and into an inflatable kiddie pool.

What brings the piece together, however, is Donovan’s use of video.

Donovan projected a looping video of his daughter directly onto the falling water.

When the angle is just right, viewers can see his daughter playing in the rain. A few steps to the left or right, and viewers

can only see scattered light reflected off the falling droplets.

Donovan said the piece was intended to capture the complexity of his relationship with his daughters and time in general.

“That piece really had a lot to do with the time I’ve been spending with my daughters as well as time that I’ve been spending away from them, and this idea of futility and holding onto a moment and kind of trying to freeze time,” Donovan said. “In a way, this piece is kind of a memorial and grieving to them growing up and me trying to hold onto those moments for as long as possible, but also trying to recreate these moments and spend time with them.”

His second piece, “Life Beer,” is intended as an exploration of classism, Donovan said.

“This piece particularly is part of a body of work I’ve been doing exploring classism and my own complex relation-

ship with growing up here in the Appalachian mountains and my pride within blue collar roots that I come from, but also a lot of practices that are involved within that, including toxic masculinity and other things that I feel like are things I’ve been trying to interrogate for a while,” Donovan said.

Donovan said the faculty exhibition is a chance to showcase the diverse faculty and staff of Appalachian State, and he expressed his gratitude to be a part of the university.

“I feel really fortunate to be a part of this university and the faculty here,” Donovan said. “To be able to do what I enjoy and to also be challenged and work around such a large, diverse group of talented people. It’s truly a blessing to be a part of that.”

The Turchin Center exhibition will be open to the public through May 5, and the Smith Gallery exhibition will be open through March 23.

BAREFOOT MODERN SIGNS RECORD DEAL O Mariah Reneau│

ne of Boone’s newest bands, Barefoot Modern, recently signed a record deal with Split Rail Records and began recording their debut album Feb. 28.

Coming from the High Point/Greensboro area, indie pop band Barefoot Modern is made up of four college students, three of which are Appalachian State freshmen.

Both bass player Hunter Evans and guitar and piano player Robert Beverly are music industry majors, and drums player Caleb LaJeune is a communications major. Lead singer Tegan Dean is a student at Lees-Mcrae College.

The band has been playing together for years in other bands, but it was not until a little over a year ago that Barefoot Modern began, Beverly said.

“We’ve been doing music for a really long time,” Beverly said.

Dean and Beverly have been friends since the sixth grade and became friends with Evans and LaJeune freshman year of high school, Beverly said.

At the time they first met, Evans and LaJeune were actually involved in a different band throughout high school.

After LaJeune wrote some songs that he wanted to be able to record in a studio his senior year of high school, the band Barefoot Modern was formed.

Barefoot Modern plays music that the band classifies as a mix between indie, pop and rock music. Inspiration from other bands such as Cage the Elephant, The Beatles, Elton John and Red Hot Chili Peppers help give the band ideas for the types of songs they want to play.

“We write songs by listening to a lot of different music and think ‘Ooh, I like that.

Let’s put that in a song,’” Beverly said.

As far as lyrics are concerned, LaJeune does most of the writing.

“I used to run into this problem in my last band where I’d realize, ‘Hey the last three or four songs I’ve written are all about girls,’ and I haven’t really run into that problem in the

last year, so I feel like these songs are all about different things,” LaJeune said.

Instead of writing about girls, the band sings about things that are happening around them.

“I feel like it’s all coming from the past year or so where we’ve heard about experiences our friends have gone through or even something we’ve gone through ourselves,” Dean said.

Since Barefoot Modern has come to Boone, they have played four shows and have performed a couple of times during Open Mic Night at Crossroads Coffee House in the Plemmons Student Union.

“The whole music scene up here in Boone is a lot different, in that it’s a lot bigger and better than Greensboro,” Dean said.

Coming from Greensboro, where the majority of the bands are composed of older adults, Barefoot Modern was introduced to a younger music scene when they came to Boone.

“I like the shows a lot better up here because we’re playing with people our age, so we can talk to them easier and we can

make friends,” Beverly said.

The band got involved in the music scene in Boone by connecting with other bands and asking if they needed openers.

“The last show we played, Electric Jelly Funk had a time slot they had to fill and they knew us and had played with us before, so they called us,” Beverly said.

As they move forward with their music, the band is working with Split Rail Records to record their first album.

“The recording process could take hours,” Split Rail Records president and senior music industry studies major McKayla Teague said.

During the recording process, the band will record 12 songs over the course of several sessions led by senior music industry major Adam Campbell.

“Right now we’re just focusing on the album and pushing it because it is really crunch time,” Dean said.

The pressure is heightened by the fact that the goal is to finish the recording process by April 1, Teague said.

However, even with pressure

and stress, the band manages to keep it light using humor.

“We always just make fun of each other all the time, so we never really get into angry situations,” Dean said.

In fact, Dean is the band prankster, pulling countless pranks on his roommate Beverly. Dean has done things such as hiding Beverly’s car, moving his stuff out of the room and refusing to speak a word to him for eight months straight, Beverly said.

“What we have assumed at this point is that a Hunter prank is to horribly inconvenience himself just to kind of inconvenience someone else,” LaJeune said.

As the band moves forward, they hope to be able to promote this new album, potentially go on a summer tour and possibly record another album in the future, Teague said.

“We have 34 songs written and 12 going on this album, so we have two albums ready and an EP,” Beverly said.

The band will also have an album release show towards the end of the spring.
