here are many Halloween activities around Boone for families and kids to do this year, but what about the students of Appalachian State University? There’s plenty to do on and around this beautiful campus to get into the Halloween spirit.

nual Boone Boo will take place in downtown Boone. There will be plenty of arts and crafts and a kid-friendly haunted house.

If you are looking for another activity the whole family may enjoy, Tweetsie Railroad hosts its Ghost Train Halloween Festival every year. Tweetsie is open for this event through Nov. 1 from 7:30-11:30 p.m.

For anyone looking for something spookier to do, there is the Fright Nights Hillbilly Horror, which features a haunted

trail and a zombie paintball fight.

It is located at the Honey Bear Campground in Boone and is open every weekend in October from 7:30-11 p.m. Admission to the haunted trail and the zombie paintball fight is $20 and $25 respectively.

If neither appeals to you, getting dressed in an awesome costume, inviting some friends over and having a costume party always works. Don’t know how? No worries. Pinter-

est is full of crazy, festive food and decorations to make your party as frightening or as fun as you so desire.

If all else fails, a Halloween movie night is still a quality activity. Even if you don’t plan to go out and do anything crazy, but instead stay in her dorm and have a monster movie marathon. Movies are always available via Netflix, Redbox or on television. Go grab some movies, popcorn, a blanket and get scaring yourself.

This year’s Halloween holiday celebration in Boone may bring students flashbacks of wearing kid’s costumes and trick-or-treating. Appalachian State University’s 2014 Family Weekend falls on Halloween weekend.

Students should expect parents to be flocking into town that weekend just in time for one of the most anticipated weekends of the year for college students.

Halloween weekend is always a popular one for parties and celebrations, the bars are always slammed and the costumes seem to get better every year.

Many questions have to be surfacing as this weekend approaches. First, the university must be worried about potential issues created by the festivities and whether they could reflect poorly on Boone and Appalachian. Halloween parties are everywhere and everyone wants their share of the holiday fun. Will the town of Boone and the university be taking measures to be stricter that weekend?

Students are sure to be excited to see their parents and siblings, but are hesitant at the idea of them being in town on this weekend in particular. So why did Appalachian choose this day?

Most likely it wasn’t on purpose, though some students do speculate it is a strategic move to tone down Halloween weekend.

“Things like that aren’t usually a coincidence, the administration knows what they’re doing,” said Gray Hyland, a sophomore marketing major.

The idea of celebrating Halloween all night and having an early wake up call for Saturday’s football festivities doesn’t seem like an exciting sequence either, despite the game being the focus of Family Weekend.

The most likely reason for Family Weekend being during Halloween is due to the scheduling of Appalachian’s football season.

Appalachian will host Georgia State University on Saturday, the first time ever the Sun Belt Conference foes will face one another.

“I love Halloween and I love tailgating with my family, but the timing of this is going to ruin my want to lay in bed all day Saturday,” Hyland said. “It is a ‘Catch-22’ of sorts for students.”

Of course, students will certainly get good meals, baked goods, groceries and clothes, but students may have to enjoy Halloween a little more tame than they would like to.

Nonetheless, Saturday morning may bring out the inner zombie for students as they host their family, lacking the sleep and freshness they usually would have on the day of a home football contest.

Budget DIY Halloween costumes

Spooky, fun costumes for Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and we all know that planning your costume can become stressful and expensive. As college students, time and money are never bountiful. The dilemma of running low on cash and not being able to buy that perfect costume can be a huge disappointment. But have no fear, here is a list of do-it-yourself Halloween costumes made from items you already have in your closet: 1. Audrey Hepburn: Audrey Hepburn is an old Hollywood classic, and everyone should recognize who you are. For this look, all you need is a little black dress, a couple strands of pearls, and big black sunglasses. Tie it all together with the “Audrey Updo,” and you’re ready for breakfast at Tiffany’s.

2. Rosie the Riveter: For this iconic figure in American history, all you need is a denim or chambray button-down shirt and a pair of jeans. Toss your hair in a ponytail and use a red bandana as a headband. Throw on some red lipstick and black mascara and be ready to flex those biceps.

3. Lumberjack: Considering we live in Boone, I’m sure everyone has a couple flannel shirts hanging in the back of their closets. Pair your favorite flannel with jeans, extra points if you have overalls, and an old beanie. Not only is this a fun costume, but you’ll be warm and comfortable the whole night.

4. Cat or any animal: This is always a fun and simple last minute Halloween costume. All you have to do is dress in all black or brown with a fur vest or jacket.

Then pair the outfit with a pair of cheap cat ears and a tail. Wal-Mart has several different animal ears for fairly cheap. Use black paint or liquid eye-liner to paint on a nose and whiskers, and you’re good to go.

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, there’s a lingering scent of pumpkin spice in the air and Halloween is right around the corner.

With so many puns, couples costumes and Disney characters to choose from, it can be difficult to find the perfect costume.

Luckily, some students have it all figured out and are prepped and ready for Halloween 2014.

“I’m going as a Mormon missionary,” said Riley Parr, a cell and molecular biology major. “I like to ride my bicycle [and] it’s classy at the same time.”

Parr also said he will be on the lookout for a pocket-sized Book of Mormon to go with this costume.

Junior Lauren Decal said she got inspiration for her costume from her peers.

“I’m going to be Hermione Granger so I can pretend to be an international [student],” Decal said.

Don’t let Halloween creep up on you. Keep it simple and classy just as international exchange student Hannah Erridge

plans on doing.

“I’m going to be a vampire. Simple, cheap, fabulous,” Erridge said.

Students also had suggestions for their peers.

“I want someone to dress up as a cardboard car cutout that’s crumpled and they’ll be an accident,” sophomore psychology major Nile Latowsky said. “I’m going as a lion because my girlfriend always says that I yawn like a lion.”

The general theme of all of the costumes seemed to be centered on do-it-yourself-type costumes instead of store-bought, because it can be constructed within short notice and little to no cost.

“Do-it-yourself costumes are more original and you don’t have to worry about someone showing up with the same costume as you,” Parr said.

The cost-effective and creative nature of DIY costumes make them much more desirable for students who want to wait until the last minute or plan weeks in advance.

Hauntings of residence past: Legends of Coffey Residence Hall

BY JESSICA HAWKINS, CONTRIBUTOR To upperclassmen at Appalachian State University, the name Coffey Residence Hall might ring a bell. To new students and underclassman, the name could have no meaning.

Built in 1953 and once home to the Honors College, Coffey Hall stood in place of the current Summit Residence Hall.

Former Summit resident, Andrew Clausen said he has never heard of the old building that once stood.

“I lived on the second floor of Summit and I never once heard of Coffey Hall,” Clausen said.

So, in the commotion of building a bigger and better residence hall, old legends began to be forgotten.

In Appalachian’s earlier years, Coffey Hall was utilized as apartments for faculty.

During that time, a professor who went by the name of Max took up residence there.

Rumor has it that Max took his own life in the bathroom of room 311 and stories say he continuously haunted the third floor and room 311 of Coffey.

During the mid-1980s, an unidentified psychic from Blowing Rock had visions of a local dormitory. These visions consisted of an old church grave-

Students identified this location as Coffey.

In this vision, the psychic entered the building and saw blood spewing out from under doors and into hallways. This vision also consisted of the recurring appearance of the date Oct. 31.

Students who took up residence in Coffey could identify with this legend because strange occurrences frequently happened.

Another paranormal instance that persistently revealed itself was the White Lady.

Proclaimed to have been buried in a graveyard under Cone Residence Hall, the White Lady used to present herself to students by roaming outside resident’s windows on the second and third floor.

In 2010, Coffey Hall was demolished. Along with its destruction, the hauntings of Max and the White Lady vanished.

“I wish I knew about this old residence hall because I lived on the second floor where these paranormal things happened, but everything was fine when I lived there, nothing strange or out of the norm,” Clausen said.

Coffey Residence Hall before it was demolished in June of 2010.

The dormitory was said to be haunted by the ghost of a man that committed suicide.

Legends of the East Hall ghost

East Residence Hall on the east side of campus Monday afternoon. East is said to be haunted by the ghost of the white lady.

One of the oldest stories on Appalachian State University’s campus is that of the haunted basement floor in East Residence Hall.

Each year, new students share new stories of their encounters with the paranormal. While there are arguments made against the legitimacy of the accusations, more and more students witness the unexplainable on the ground floor of the dormitory.

According to www.northcarolinaghosts.com, a website that explains ghost stories and urban legends from all across North Carolina, the hauntings began in the 1960s after a student committed suicide on the ground floor.

Since then, there have been reports of whispering voices, the sounds of someone walking through the hallway when it was empty and balls of light hovering near the ceilings in some rooms.

The majority of the students living on the ground floor of East Hall this year are freshmen, and most did not know of the hauntings until they arrived. Less than two months into their stay, many residents have experienced events that led them to believe the stories may have merit.

Freshman management major Devin Perry said he was with his girlfriend one night when they witnessed a strange figure in the room near his roommate’s bed.

“We saw something in the corner,” Perry said. “We both saw it at different times in the night – which was weird – while we were asleep. But it was standing right beside [my roommate’s] bed in the corner.”

Perry figured he was just dreaming at first, but changed his mind when he talked to his girlfriend the next morning.

“She woke up the next day and was

PHOTO BY MALIK RAHILI, VME talking about this crazy dream that she had where some black figure was standing in the corner beside Matt’s bed, and I was like, ‘That’s weird, because I had the same dream,’” Perry said.

Stories like this, along with the originals, have made some residents uncomfortable. Freshman psychology major Quincy Stanford falls into that category.

“For the first month and a half, I would not go to the bathroom at night or leave the room,” Stanford said. “I was scared.”

Resident Assistant Taylor Cobb does not believe these legends contain any truth. Cobb arrived two weeks ahead of the other students and had no such experience.

“It was just me on this hall, and I didn’t see or hear anything,” Cobb said.

Other students would disagree. Freshman marketing major Darian Bell said she was trying to take a nap when a picture frame violently flew across the room and shattered all over the floor.

Bell’s logical side told her the open window had something to do with it, but she remains frightened and has started sleeping with her roommate. However, Bell has plans moving forward.

“My mom’s friends told me I need to get sage sticks,” Bell said. “I’m doing it.

I’m literally gonna sage our room. I can’t live here comfortably for a year having this in my head.”

Until then, Bell is coping in other ways.

“All I think of is ‘Casper. Casper.

Casper,’” Bell said.

Speaking of friendly ghosts, while the haunting stories have scared some, residents also realize that it could be a lot worse.

“I think the ghost is nice,” Stanford said. “It hasn’t messed with me, so if there’s a ghost, then it’s a pretty chill ghost.”

Scary Cookin’ Candy Corn Sugar Cookies

STORY/PHOTO BY SAM CORDIALINI, GRAPHIC DESIGNER One of my favorite things about the holidays is all of the festive treats. Whether you’re the one making it or eating it or both, having sweet treats that cater to that time of the year is such a joy.

You can’t think of Halloween without that funny little tri-colored candy coming to mind. Candy corn is one of those candies that you either love or hate, and if you’re like me and you find them adorable, yet not so tasty, you’ll be glad to know you can turn them into something everyone will enjoy.

These candy corn-inspired cookies are super easy to make and are guaranteed to be a hit wherever you take them.

In case you haven’t quite found a cookie recipe that is your favorite, try this.

What you’ll need

•1 batch of sugar cookie dough •Gel food coloring •1 ounce semi sweet chocolate •1 loaf pan •Plastic wrap •Cutting board •Knife •Baking sheet •Parchment paper •Sugar •Cooling rack

Ingredients

•6 cups unbleached flour •4 tsp baking powder •1 tsp salt •2 cups butter •1-1/2 cup sugar •2 eggs •4 Tbsp milk •3 tsp vanilla •1/2 tsp almond extract

Directions: Combine flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. Cream sugar and butter, then add eggs, milk and extracts. Slowly add the flour mixture and beat until combined.

After your cookie dough is mixed, separate and divide it evenly into thirds.

Next you need to color your dough to look like candy corn. You can either do the traditional yellow, orange, and white, or if you’re feeling up to it, you can mix in the chocolate to the last third like I did. After all of your dough is colored, line a loaf pan with plastic wrap. Take the white or brown dough and press it evenly into the bottom of the pan.

Then press the orange dough over the white/brown, and lastly press the yellow over the orange. Fold the plastic wrap over the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour or until hard to the touch.

After the dough has chilled, remove from the plan and plastic wrap.

Heat your oven to 350 degrees and cut the dough brick into quarter inch slices, and then cut each slice into 6-7 wedges.* Place wedges one inch apart onto parchment lined baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are slightly browned. Do not overcook.

Cool for one minute and immediately place warm cookies into a bowl of sugar to coat and allow to finish cooling on a rack.

*I did not use a loaf pan so my cookies were a bit smaller than expected. If you do not have a loaf pan but do have a brownie pan, that will work fine. Just be aware of the baking difference.

Tis’ the season to drink pumpkin beers

An assortment of just a few of the pumpkin-flavored beers that are out for the Halloween season.

The leaves have changed, the air is crisp and it’s the long awaited season for pumpkin beers. With craft beer growing in popularity, there are countless new pumpkin beers to try every fall.

Benchmark Provisions, located in downtown Boone under Farmer’s Hardware and across from Black Cat Burrito on Depot Street, carries more than 15 different pumpkin beers. These brews come from all over the country and range from $2-$11.

Their percentages in alcohol range from 5.5 to 8.6 percent.

Chatoe Rouge Pumpkin Patch Ale is the only one of the 15 that uses their own grown pumpkins in their beer. The Catawba Valley King Don’s Pumpkin Ale is brewed closest to Boone. The Big Boss Harvest Time and Cottonwood Pumpkin are both from North Carolina, as well.

Benchmark has put together fall seasonal mix packs that include six different fall seasonal beers for under $12. The packs give you pumpkin beers and other seasonal flavors, too. For those of you who enjoy fall flavors but not so much pumpkin, Benchmark also carries about six other seasonal beers such as the Oktoberfest from Germany and also a variety of hard ciders.

Benchmark employee, Zack Chavez, told me that Benchmark received its first pumpkin beer sometime between late August and early September and that pumpkin beers have been selling very well. They have already gone through two different pumpkin kegs from their growler station.

Chavez said his favorite pumpkin beer is the Howe Sound Pumpkineater.

“It’s flavorful without being overbearing,” he said.

Co-owner Sam Parker recommends the Southern Tier Warlock.

“It’s full-bodied, dark, with a hint of all-spice,” which Parker prefers over the cinnamon, buttery spices of other pumpkin beers.

Parker said pumpkin beers should be “darker and chewier,” like the gourd itself.

Scream your way to a great Halloween

The best part of Halloween isn’t the costumes or the candy. Halloween means being able to watch movies that just don’t feel right during any other part of the year. From fun and festive films to horror classics, spooky movies aren’t hard to find during October.

All movies listed below are available both in the campus library and for download on iTunes and Amazon.

“The Shining” (1980) Stanley Kubrick isn’t known for being a master of horror like Stephen King is, but this movie solidifies

his legacy as one of the most prolific directors of the 20th century. “The Shining” will leave new viewers disturbed by Jack Nicholson’s mind-blowing performance.

“Paranormal Activity” (2007) This popular footage film was almost never released. After Stephen Spielberg saw it, Dreamworks

bought the rights to this terrifying flick. “Paranormal Activity” starts out as your typical “monster-inhouse” movie, but quickly escalates into something much more sinister.

“Children of the Corn” (1984) This movie, based on his short story of the same name, lets Stephen King live up to his title. Creepy

children are perhaps the scariest horror cliche, and “Children of the Corn” is filled with them.

“Hocus Pocus” (1993) This Halloween night tale focuses on three Salem witches who come back after 300 years of im-

prisonment to try and stay young forever. It’s up to two children, Max and Dani, to stop the witches before every adult in Salem dances to their death. App State senior Matt Splawn loves “Hocus Pocus” because it makes him feel nostalgic. “‘Hocus Pocus’ reminds me of Halloween as a kid, and Bette Midler’s performance is to die for,” Splawn said.

“Beetlejuice” (1988) Tim Burton is the master of creepy, fun films, and “Beetlejuice” is exactly that. After a pair of new-

lyweds, played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, die in their new home, it’s up to them and the new owners to stop a mischievous spirit only known as Beetlejuice from wreaking havoc in their new home.

A horrific halloween playlist to spark devilish deeds

BY CARSON HAGER, PHOTOGRAPHER Music brings out your inner moonlit, ghoulish self and sets spotlight onto the evening of tricks and treats for even the oldest ones to have fun. Here is a playlist of the best Halloween songs.

“Cry Like A Ghost” by Passion Pit This Passion Pit song brings a techno sound that will grab the attention of the crowd.

Starting off with a lower screeching noise, Passion Pit brings in the hearts of the listeners and keeps their attention with ranges of voice movement throughout the song.

“Monster” by Kanye West, Jay- Z Building up the fear for the night is not a problem with Kanye West’s song “Monster,” featuring Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross for a collaboration that will ignite your mood. The song starts with an introduction of the night and moves to Rick Ross rapping about his ego. This song brings light to each of their characters that make you feel electrified by the beats.

“Thriller” by Michael Jackson From the one and only king of pop, this MJ song brought the public a classic that stays locked in your head for the rest of the night. “Thriller” is a pop song that brings the family together in a zombie-like dance line and sparks excitement with all ages. “It’s always struck me as being a unique song. There’s something peculiar about it, particularly the narration, but it’s a classic. Everybody knows what it is when it comes on,” sophomore CJ Hinshaw said.

“The Boogie Monster” by Gnarls Barkley This song draws you in with a spooky laugh and keeps you listening with a calming, dark tone and long words dragged out to describe the atmosphere of his room. The singer has a sound that reflects a deep, jazzy soul and compliments the back noise. The feel for the song brings the listener through the threshold. “Really jazzy and fun,” sophomore Madalene Smith said. “Made me want to put on a fabulous, flowy ghost costume and dance like a sassy hippy.”

“Sympathy For The Devil” by The Rolling Stones This song brings in a natural beat that allows the lead singer to introduce himself as the devil. The song keeps going with a buzzing beat and drawn out words that are easy to understand. Play this song to finish off the night. “Definitely an upbeat song,” sophomore Maddi Pleasant said. “Feels very classic but when you listen to the lyrics, it’s a lot more eerie than the beat lets on. I would put it on my party playlist.”

Opinion: Ladies, stop dressing up as cats

A plague runs rampant through the campus of Appalachian State University every October. I’m not talking about cold weather or Ebola, but something worse. As the days count down before Halloween, more and more girls start to pull out their mascara and dress up as cats.

Cats, cats, cats. You walk into a Halloween party here at Appalachian and that’s all you see. Why? Why does one animal have the right to take control over all our social media feeds as well as a huge holiday for college students?

“It’s so easy to throw whiskers on your face and buy $1 of ears from Wal-Mart,” sophomore elementary education major Emily Mercer said.

“Cats are unoriginal. I miss when you could go out when you were little and see a kid dressed as a washing machine.”

I understand that college students are on a budget, but there are so many other costume options for girls that need to be explored instead of the feline variety.

“You could be Beyonce or even Lady Gaga,” Mercer said. “You can honestly throw on something that you find in your kitchen and say ‘I’m Lady Gaga’.”

Halloween has evolved into being a sexy holiday at the college level, which is completely understandable. Put a bunch of emotionally active guys and girls together and that is bound to happen. What’s so sexy about cats though? They cough up hairballs and pee on rocks in a smelly box.

“I don’t think of sexy when I think of cats,” sophomore mathematics major Benjamin Jones said. “I’m always confused because, are they about to scratch me or something?”

So ladies, don’t dress up as cats this Halloween. Your peers and cats alike will thank you. Please, for the love of all that is spooky.

Mountaineers look to put down wounded Panthers

fter notching its first-ever Sun Belt win, App State was able to enjoy a week off to recover and prepare for the final five games of the season.

The Mountaineers focused on fundamentals and the wide receivers focused specifically on route running during practice last week.

While the Mountaineers rested at home, Georgia State was busy being throttled by Georgia Southern, losing 69-31.

App State has the advantage of being at home and of having an extra week of rest on the Panthers who haven’t notched a win since week one.

Saturday’s game will feature temperatures in the mid 30s and scattered snow showers are possible.

Georgia State, which plays its home games in a dome, will have to adjust to the elements at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Chilly November games have been kind to the Mountaineers of late, as the team is 19-1 in its last 20 home games in the month.

RUSHING WITH CONFIDENCE

A key to App State’s first Sun Belt win was establishing the running game as the team rushed for 441 yards, spreading out the wealth well between sophomore Marcus Cox, redshirt freshman Terrence Upshaw and junior Ricky Fergerson.

In the cold weather, running will be important for the Mountaineers again.

It will allow them to take pressure off of redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Lamb and control time of possession while wearing the Panthers down.

EMBARKING TO THE UNKNOWN

Saturday’s game is the beginning of a five-game stretch of games against opponents that App State has never played before.
