SPILLING THE BEANS: BOONE’S BEST COFFEE

runch time is upon students as they enter the last week of the semester.

Boone is home to some of the coziest coffee shops that are perfect for cramming for finals and escaping the chilly weather for a warm cup of Joe. Bald Guy Brew on King Street in downtown Boone was established in 2007. It is a staple for local poets and crafters. About three years ago, Bald Guy Brew was named Alchemy Coffee Shop, but the name was changed to reflect the store’s exclusive use of Bald Guy coffee beans.

Located in the same building as Bald Guy is a bead shop called Strand, that allows customers to choose their own beads and craft their own jewelry.

Bald Guy Brew located beside Strand is not affiliated with the Bald Guy Brew in Valle Crucis, but is an extension of the bead shop that exclusively sells Bald Guy coffee.

Melanie Harsha, Bald Guy Brew barista and 2015 App State alumna, said, "I am a coffee snob. I would not just work at any coffee shop, I work here because I know that the coffee and beans are good."

Harsha's favorite drink is the chai latte, which is one of Bald Guy Brew's specialties because of the owner's secret recipe.

Unlike other coffee shops around, Bald Guy allow dogs inside and accommodates customers with free Wi-Fi. Harsha explains that this space is not the quietest, but it is great for students to meet and work on group projects or for people who want to sit, chill and listen to music.

The playlist is barista’s choice and Harsha describes her playlist as mostly The Avett Brothers while her co-worker plays Emancipator. “We try to keep the playlist family friendly, especially during the day,” she said.

For food, Bald Guy Brew offers cookies from Appalachian Cookie Company and bagels. “The owner really liked the idea of people coming and staying here for four hours or more even if they only spend $2,” Harsha said.

Bald Guy Brew sells seasonal specialty drinks and for winter there is the peppermint mocha and London Fog, a drink made with Earl Grey tea, vanilla and steamed milk. The cheapest drink is a 12 ounce drip coffee and the most expensive is a large specialty drink that costs about $4-$5.

Bald Guy hosts open mic night every Wednesday night from 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m., and it is the only night the coffee shop is open past 7 p.m. At open mic night there is a variety of acts such as comedy, poetry and music. Even though poets usually dominate the open mic, there is an opportunity for everyone to perform.

Espresso News opened in 1993 and is located at a “hidden” location on Howard Street, local coffee fanatic Allison Samperi said.

With seven bar seats, two four-top tables, five two-top tables and a more private and quieter “feng shui” upstairs that seats 15 to 20 people, this coffee house is tucked away between Footsloggers and ECRS Retail Automation Solutions in downtown on Howard Street. It is a short walk away from Walker Hall, which makes it a perfect spot for Communication and Math majors after class.

Douglas Watson, a molecular biology major and Espresso News barista, said his favorite drink is a triple americano. The cheapest coffee option is an espresso shot or a 12 ounce coffee totaling $1.75, and the most expensive drink is either a smoothie or 4

“We are known for our organic beans that we sell a lot of to local businesses like Boone Saloon, Proper and Hob Knob Farm Café,” Watson said.

Abi Shaki, a senior English major whose favorite drink is a dirty chai, also works as a barista at Espresso News. “Espresso News is also known for its in-house roasted coffee, roasted by the owner Uijin, who is the overseer of Espresso News and is really cool,” she said.

The music is selected by the barista and Watson describes his choice playlist as “anything from Death Grips, to Earth, Wind and Fire, and Earl Sweatshirt or Weezer.”

Shaki’s playlist depends on the weather. “If it is rainy or dreary out I will usually play ambient music. When it is sunny I will play energetic music. Winter is coming so you will probably hear me playing Tycho-like music,” she said.

Espresso news is trying to organize monthly or bi-monthly music shows, and Watson said lately there has been “a good kind of weird” alternative music playing at Espresso News.

Shaki describes Espresso News as a “meeting place” for students and friends.

She believes that coffee shops are a place of reconciliation and a space for people to discuss life and problems. “This coffee shop has good energy and has been open for almost 22 years, and there has been so many spirits and bodies in and out," she said.

"I feel so honored to work here."

Wired Scholar is conveniently located in the Belk Library and Crossroads is close by in the Plemmons Student Union and are both owned by Shelly Parsons.

Each spot sell the same drinks and the pastries and donuts are from Local Lion.

For Fall season there is also hot apple cider. At the Wired Scholar, there are salads, quiche and cheesecakes available from Red Onion Café.

Katie Hudgins, Wired Scholar barista and senior psychology and health studies major at App State, said her favorite drink is a mocha latte. Hudgins describes the most popular drink as the “turtle,” which is a latte with chocolate, caramel and hazelnut syrup.

“We accept meal plan money here which accommodates students when they don’t want to use ‘real money’ to pay for coffee,” she said.

Jordan Lancaster, senior advertising major and barista at Wired Scholar, describes the coffee shop as great study environment. “Since most of our customers are students, we try to keep a very student atmosphere,” Lancaster said. Pandora is used for the music most of the time, he said.

Barista Jason Prigge’s favorite drink is a varietal drip and Kre Voight, a barista at Crossroads, prefers an espresso over ice. Crossroads is available for booking any event such as music to Greek life functions. On Monday nights there is live jazz, Wednesday is open mic night and Sunday nights are trivia nights.

Crossroads provides pastries from Local Lion and “Boone Bars,” which as Prigge describes, is “a local Cliff bar that is really good."

‘A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAY OF LIFE’

uring the 2015-16 academic year, Appalachian had 77 short-term, faculty-led programs. For semester and yearlong exchange programs, the university is partnered with 61 different foreign institutions. There are also 13 affiliated partners through third-party companies and organizations that provide short- and long-term programs, international internships, independent studies and opportunities for international student teaching.

Chase Price, international business major, attended a study abroad program from January through May in Sevilla, Spain to study at La Univesrsidad Pablo de Olivide.

As he earned 12 credits for his degree, he also spent time traveling through cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Granada.

Price was able to learn how to communicate in Spanish to his host family that didn’t know English and complete his minor in Spanish. Price said that it was an opportunity he wouldn’t exchange for anything.

“If you’re thinking about studying abroad, just do it. It’s the best time you’ll ever have in school, and you get the chance to step out of your comfort zone to experience a totally different way of life,” Price said. “Not studying abroad would’ve been my biggest regret in college if I hadn’t done it.”

Katelyn Byng, political science major, spent last spring semester studying in Angers, France, and explored all through Europe by traveling to places such as Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Ireland.

“I went to a ton of places, but I guess my favorites were Paris, exploring Athens, Greece and swimming in the Aegean Sea off the coast of the Island of Milos, eating good Portuguese food in Porto, Portugal, and seeing the Cliffs of Moher in Galway, Ireland,” said Byng.

While studying in France, Byng had the opportunity to work towards her French minor and use her the French speaking skills outside the classroom walls. She said that the most rewarding part of studying abroad was learning a new language and having a new view of the world.

On average, about 300 students participate in semester or long-term programs and approximately 700 students participate in faculty-led education abroad programs.

Chanel Frisco, an assistant director for the education abroad department, said that Appalachian has received positive feedback about their study abroad programs.

“Many students tell us that their experience abroad has changed their lives for the better. They often tell us that they want to go back or find a way to work abroad. I would say negative feedback involves the application process. The process can be time consuming and there is a lot of information and steps involved in the process, but if students begin the process early it is much easier to navigate,” Frisco said.

For long-term programs, the application process will take several months of planning. They must have completed at least one semester of college prior to getting involved with the study abroad program and have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.5 or higher depending on the program of study.

The application process for semester or year long programs starts with a student attending a study abroad 101 workshop. These workshops provide information about the different types of programs, the costs for the trips, what coursework and approval will be needed, the financial aid available to students and the application process as a whole.

The student then will make an appointment with an OIED advisor. After meeting with that advisor and finding a program worth pursuing, the student will completely the online application. While waiting for the official acceptance from the host program or institution, the student will complete a course approval form and attend the OIED pre-departure orientation.

charge of the trip and make the payments needed to attend the program. They must also maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.

Appalachian provides resources like workshops, advising sessions, and the OIED website to help assist students as much as they can. Through open houses, class presentations, and the International Fair, the school shares different opportunities for students to participate in the study abroad program.

Though Byng enjoyed her trip and is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to return to Europe, she hopes Appalachian will continue to grow their study abroad program and offer students as many resources as possible.

“What we should have is a person for every region of the world to help divide up the work, and a manual written from past students who studied there to assist the students currently trying to study in those areas. But that’s just my two cents,” Byng said.

Mark Hagen, an assistant director for education abroad, said there would be a Study Abroad Ambassador Program coming soon to help inform students about future study abroad programs.

The two assistant directors for education abroad can attest to the importance of study abroad through personal experience. Both Hagen and Frisco have studied abroad in the past, and said that those experiences have helped them work at learning other languages and seeing how other cultures work. Frisco studied at the Universite d’Angers as well as some other universities in England and Scotland, while Hagen studied in Mexico.

“The experience taught me about myself and an appreciation for my own culture,” Hagen said. “I learned independence through my travels and developed a keen sense of understanding of the Mexican culture. None of these experiences can be replicated in a classroom in the United States.”

The two directors find study abroad programs to be important to Appalachian students because it helps them gain a global perspective from which they can form their own beliefs and appreciate world issues through new eyes.

“I think that the world we live in is becoming more and more connected,” Frisco said. “Employers are seeking graduates that have international experiences which demonstrate their ability to adapt, think critically to problem solve, and to be able to work with and relate to people from different cultures.”

NEW THINGS BREWING IN BROYHILL

BY SAMMY HANF NEWS REPORTER Since being established a few years ago, the fermentation science department at Appalachian has only been getting better with age, much like the fine wine students are learning to produce.

The department webpage says the curriculum was finalized in 2012 with the framework being laid by Seth Cohen, the current director, who came to Appalachian with the aim of creating a program for a degree in the field.

But the seeds were planted by students and faculty with brewing on the brain.

Nathan Kelischek, head brewer at Appalachian Mountain Brewery, said he had been working on creating delicious concoctions on campus before the program started proper through Ivory Tower.

These efforts laid fertile ground for establishing a full program to better meet the needs of students drawn to the thriving industry.

From there the program has taken off. Stephan Sommers, a professor in the fermentation science department, said he moved all the way from Germany to join because what it offered was very unique and allowed him to be involved in producing both beer and wine, an opportunity only offered by a handful of programs across the world.

Sommers said the breadth of the program can be partially attributed to the craft brewing industry, which is currently thriving, opening doors and working to legitimize fermented beverages.

“They show how it has to be done, how you attract people, how you sell your product as a more valuable part of the market and how you make it a family experience. Rather than go to a bar and just have a beer, if you go to a small brewery it’s a whole experience, it’s not just about the beer,” Sommers said.

Interest in the craft brewing industry was a driving force in the development of the program and enrollment as many students join with the idea of brewing beer, Sommers said.

Sarah Marx, a founding member of the fermentation sciences club, said that many students have already worked in the industry and are interested in the program to broaden their career potential.

Sommers said that there is still a good mix in the program and that many younger students are joining as well. The only legal hurdles for underage students are classes that focus on the sensory aspects of beer and wine, which require the consumption of alcohol, and often students have to wait until their senior year to take those courses.

Offering more than just the know-how on beer and wine, Sommers said the program strives to cover all facets of fermented goods to begin with and then allows students to narrow down from there. Sommers said this is important because students may forget about the rest of the family, like kombucha and cheese, as well as a myriad of other fermented meat and dairy products.

“I think that’s another big misconception about the program is that it’s all about alcohol and it’s not,” Marx said.

Sommers said a big advantage for the undergraduate approach at Appalachian was that it can cover a wide range of topics, even including classes that focus on the societal effects of alcohol. Different perspectives on its use are presented by guest speakers across the spectrum, from industry insiders to religious leaders.

Getting beyond the theory aspect, Sommers said that classes on wine and beer production are offered to give students a chance to develop their skills and mess up as

well.

“Before you start your first job, I always recommend to have all the mistakes already made by then, so you don’t do it on your first job and get into trouble,” he said.

Sommers said that for wine, students go to Grandfather Vineyards, a partner of the department, during the fall semester because that is the harvest season for the grapes they will be using. They also work closely with local breweries so that students can work in their facilities and also perfect their own recipes in the brewing facility in the old Broyhill Events Center.

Sommers said the fruits of their labors can be purchased at Peabody’s Wine and Beer in Boone. The student wine is called Scholar and the profits go towards research scholarships.

Austin Zanella, of Asheville Brewing Company, said that learning the science behind brewing at Appalachian really helped him in understanding his mistakes by realizing what is happening at each step of the process.

“Let’s say something goes wrong, if you don’t know anything besides process, you can’t troubleshoot the problem at all. I think that’s where one of the key strengths of the App State fermentation science program is. If you’ve already got a process, this gives you one extra step where you can actually fix things and what’s more you can actually come up with new things,” Zanella said.

This freedom in experimenting was key to Kelischek as well. He said that working in small batches on campus was key to establishing his fundamentals and made it that much easier to get Appalachian Mountain Brewery started when he met its current CEO while bartending at Mellow Mushroom.

They met over a shared passion for brewing, a passion they were determined to share with Boone, despite the legal difficulties in opening the brewery in town.

“Personally I love Boone. That’s really the reason why we chose to be here is because we wanted to stay here in town,” Kelischek said.

Kelischek said that Appalachian Mountain Brewery is also dedicated to helping the community, working closely with nonprofits like Blue Ridge Conservancy.

Marx said she is also working to establish a community between students as well as local brewers through the fermentation sciences club, which was officially established this September and plans to meet twice a month.

The department also offers lab services for producers looking to make sure their products are doing well and Sommers said the program has earned a reputation based on its merits.

Sommers said the program has a very close relationship to wineries in the region and they often look through their pool of graduates for potential hires.

Moving forward, Sommers said there are plans to create a master’s program for fermentation science that should be realized within the next two years. This opens up the door for those who want to move into the teaching side of the field and students looking to get more specialized jobs at larger breweries.

“I’ve always liked the idea of teaching. I’ve got three brewers assistants that work on rotation and so I’m teaching them the brewing process and distillery practices and that’s really fun for me,” Zanella said.

LAMB ON PACE FOR RECORD-BREAKING SEASON

A

s the 2014 Appalachian State football season came to a close, Mountaineer fans had a lot to be excited about. The team ended the season on a six-game winning streak, the defense was playing at a level that had a chance to contend as one of the best in the country and freshman quarterback Taylor Lamb looked to be the future of the program.

Fast forward to the 2015 season and all of these things manifested themselves once again. The team currently has a 9-2 record, the best in years. The defense was ranked as one of the best in the country for a good portion of the season. But what has become abundantly clear is the consistency and ability that Lamb brings to the team.

Lamb has already surpassed a number of his statistics from last year and is on pace to challenge some school records in just his second season at the helm for the Mountaineers. This season has shown more growth and improvement under head coach Scott Satterfield.

“Last year it took him to the end of the year before he really understood [the system],” Satterfield said. “This year he had a great grasp as he started the season and overall he’s had an outstanding season.”

With one more regular season game remaining, Lamb has completed 142 of his 235 passing attempts. What’s more impressive is that he has only thrown seven interceptions, three of them coming against the undefeated Clemson Tigers, who happen to be the top-ranked team in all of college football.

“He makes good decisions in the passing game,” Satterfield said. “He’s on track to break the passing record here.

He’s taken care of the ball as far as throwing interceptions. That in itself is showing his progression.”

While Lamb wasn’t an interception machine last year, throwing only nine, he said the real improvement has come from him trying to be a better manager on the field and having a real control over the game.

Lamb said the offense has built an identity of trying to string together long, sustained drives and protect the football, an identity that has been a work in progress at times this season.

“I think we’ve gotten better as the year has gone on,” Lamb said.

The stats don’t tell the whole story, though. Wide receivers like senior Malachi Jones have noticed an improvement in his accuracy, even though statistics say it is nearly identical to last year.

“When we need those deep balls, the ball is there, and we’re able to shift momentum and make those big plays,” Jones said. “Him being older and having the opportunity to have a year playing in the Sun Belt has given him an opportunity to progress and make those big plays. I think we, as a receiving core, have made more big plays this year than we have in many recent years.”

Passing the ball is only part of Lamb’s responsibilities as a true manager of the game. Appalachian State is a runfirst team and Lamb also contributes in that department.

Lamb is the team’s fourth leading rusher with 367 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s averaged 5.1 yards per carry, which is just one-tenth of a yard less than standout junior running back Marcus Cox’s average. The running threat that Lamb is for defenses, paired with his passing history, makes the Mountaineer offense a headache to defend.

“He’s continuing to operate the offense and the run,” Satterfield said. “That’s something that people overlook in our run game — it really helps our offense as a whole.”

While many of his numbers have improved, Lamb only cares about one statistical category: The win-loss column.

“As long as we leave the field with a win it doesn’t really matter what I, or any of the team, does,” Lamb said. “It’s better than last year and that’s our goal. To keep getting better every year.”

Lamb has been a pivotal part to the Mountaineer success this year, having different impacts on each game.

He’s thrown for four touchdowns on two separate occasions. He’s thrown for three touchdowns in four others. He has had two games with over 300 yards passing. Against Troy he ran for two touchdowns. He was even named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week when the team beat Old Dominion earlier this season.

All of that and more has led to Lamb being ranked seventh in the country for passer efficiency, according to ESPN. Not only that, but ESPN also has him tied for 12th in the country in passing touchdowns, throwing 27 already this season. That’s 10 more than all of last year. Lamb needs just three more touchdowns to break the record for single-season passing touchdowns set by App State Hall of Famer Armani Edwards in 2008.

“Records are meant to be broken and, fortunately for me, I’ve been a part of a lot of the records being broken over the last 10 years,” Satterfield said. “It’s hard to believe we can continue to break them, but we love to do it. Any time we can approach record, we find out what we need to do, and then we wanna go break it. It’s fun for the guys. It’s fun for the staff. That’s what keeps you motivated.”

What’s been most impressive is not that he’s been able to accomplish it, but how he’s been able to do it.

There is no primary receiver. Eight different receivers have over 100 yards. Six different receivers have double digit receptions. Five different receivers have three or more touchdowns.

“I don’t know how many different guys have caught a touchdown, but we may be creeping up on a record for that,” Satterfield said. “To me, we’re hard to defend when we’re that way.”

The number he’s looking for is an astounding 13. That’s 13 different receivers that have caught touchdown passes this season. Jones credits it to the “awesome” chemistry between Lamb and his receivers.

“It’s on a level that can’t be described,” Jones said. “T-Lamb and the receiving core get along well. We’ve had these past two years to get to know each other and gel as a team.”

Looking forward, the team hopes to break the record for Lamb this weekend in their final regular season game against South Alabama. But it’s more than just about the records. The team has a confidence and a belief that Lamb is going to lead this team somewhere special.

“We know Taylor can make the throws,” Jones said. “We know he can make the right reads, and he’s a field general. We have all the confidence in the world in him. When we’re out there running our routes, we know the ball is gonna be there. We know if we do our job, he’ll do his part, and everything is gonna be good.”

JEOPARDIZING THE JAGUARS

BACK AGAINST THE WALL South Alabama enters Saturday just one win shy of reaching the six-win total required for NCAA bowl eligibility, meaning they have a lot to play for. App State, on the other hand, clinched a bowl bid weeks ago.

Coming off of back-to-back losses to conference losses, in which both games could’ve clinched bowl eligibility, South Alabama has backed themselves into a corner. I’d expect the Jaguars to be prepared to play their best game of the season given the “win or go home” stakes the matchup presents them.

The Mountaineers, who enter the game with little to play for other than reaching a 10win total after Arkansas State wrapped up the conference last Saturday, should be ready for a hard fought game that could even feature some trick plays. Often, the most dangerous opponent is with their back against the wall.

ACCIDENT PRONE It’s as simple as this: If you win the turnover battle, you win games.

App State has a positive turnover differential on the season (+3) while South Alabama does not (-6), something that can likely be attributed to their disparity in the win column.

Jaguar quarterback Cody Clements has thrown for a total of 13 touchdowns, but more importantly has thrown 12 interceptions, meaning he’s a risk taker.

I expect Nate Woody to disguise his defensive coverages to confuse Clements and bring pressure from the interior linebackers as well as the secondary. If they can confuse Clements, he’s obviously got a track record of dishing out turnovers. We may see two or three on Saturday.

MORE FROM MOORE In his last two games, redshirt freshman running back Jalin Moore has amassed an astounding 348 yards on 40 carries, good for 8.7 yards per carry, while leading the Mountaineers to back-to-back blowout victories.

The increased production has helped the Mountaineers two-fold: it has given their offense confidence that they can still be effective on the ground without star back Marcus Cox in the lineup, and it has allowed Cox to rest and recover from the gradual wear of a season of Sun Belt play — just in time for the Apps to go bowling.

With a bowl game looming and Moore playing historically well, there’s no reason to risk the chance for injury to Cox. I expect we’ll see a heavy dose of Moore in the backfield early and often for the Mountaineers, with Cox receiving only about 10-15 carries at most.

O

ften, when teams dominate a Division I NCAA conference, it is likely because that school has competed in that conference for several seasons. The Alabama Crimson Tide has been part of the SEC since 1932 and boasts 24 SEC titles to date. Ohio State shows much the same, having won 35 titles since joining the Big Ten in 1916.

But that’s not always the case.

Despite both schools’ successes at the FCS level, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern have both taken the conference by storm since arriving to the Sun Belt last season.

Since 2004, 11 teams, including App State (2014) and Georgia Southern (2014), have made the jump to the FBS level of Division I. Almost half of those, including South Alabama (2012), Texas State (2012), and Georgia State(2013) are currently in the Sun Belt Conference.

In both of the Mountaineers appearances against Georgia State, they have had no problem putting up tremendous numbersb shutting them out 44-0 in 2014 and holding them to a field goal this season in a 37-3 win over the Panthers.

Georgia Southern dominated the same team 69-31 in 2014, and the two square off Saturday with bowl eligibility on the line for the Panthers.

The Panthers haven’t amassed a winning record since entering the Sun Belt with an 0-12 (0-7 conf.) record in 2013, 1-11 (0-8 conf.) in 2014 and a 5-6 (4-3 conf.) record on the season currently, showing just how different the experience in jumping to FBS Division I can be.

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern have history dating back to 1932. Recently, however, both teams both have mirrored each other with similar identities. Good players are of course the foundation, but the structure in which both teams are able to run the ball is the driving force.

“I think both of us have done a couple of things. Number one, we’ve been able to run the football and when you do that you can control the game and we both play good defense,” head coach Scott Satterfield said.

“That’s been a formula for success for many, many years – running the football and playing good defense.”

Last season, Georgia Southern had the edge out of the gate as they went 3-2 in their first five games, finished 9-3 on the season and 8-0 in the Sun Belt. Appalachian State didn’t manage a winning record until their 11th game with a win over Louisiana-Lafayette in their fifthstraight win. The Mountaineers lost five of their first six, but finished their season on a six game winning streak to finish 7-5 on the season and

6-2 record in the Sun Belt.

“When we first got here last year there were a lot of young guys starting off and we didn’t really know our identity,” defensive end Ronald Blair said. “Halfway through last season we pretty much found our identity as a ‘grind-and-punch’ kind of defense and an offense that likes to run the ball and a defense that likes to run to the ball and tackle.

I feel like our communication has matured the most and helped us be successful.”

The Mountaineers trounced their way to the end of their first season of Sun Belt play, winning six straight games by an average score of 41-20. Despite their hot streak to end the season, the team still had a summer ahead of them dedicated to coming out stronger, in hopes of getting to their first bowl game and potentially winning their first Sun Belt Championship.

“Our weight program had to gain some more weight and get faster because obviously it’s a different animal at this level than FCS,” quarterback Taylor Lamb said. “That’s just the main thing. We stuck with our

game plan and put some wrinkles in here and there for our offense and defense to be successful at this level.”

This season, until these two teams matched up against each other, they only had one loss, respectively. App State just couldn’t compete for a full four quarters in a week two matchup against the Clemson Tigers, who now sit at No.1 atop the College Football Playoff poll. The Eagles fell 44-0 to the other Mountaineers of West Virginia.

Both the Mountaineers and Eagles have averaged 37 points per game in 11 games. In their nine wins, Appalachian State outscored their opponents by 27, while Georgia Southern outscored opponents by 28 in their eight wins.

Running back Marcus Cox has been the catalyst for the Mountaineers since he stepped on the field as a freshman in 2013. He notched his third consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season in the Mountaineers 28-7 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

However, Georgia Southern’s option run offense has been absolutely bewildering over the last two seasons. Running back Matt Brieda and quarterback Kevin Ellison rushed for over 1,000 yards respectively helping the Eagles post a Sun Belt best 4,573 total rushing yards in 2014-15, also good for second in the nation. This year, the Eagles sit atop the NCAA rankings, having rushed for 4,132 yards, surpassing the 4,000yard mark once again.

“They’ve got a lot of athletes on their offense,” Blair said. “Between their quarterback and running back, Ellison and Brieda, that’s an incredible duo and it’s hard to stop them.”

As of this moment, both teams have shown how identical they are to one another, like fraternal twins. Some differences on the interior, but visibly alike. Both teams are 6-1 in the Sun Belt and are tied for second behind Arkansas State, who Georgia Southern does not face this season.

Despite having a dominating debut in the Sun Belt, in which his team went 8-0 in conference and was crowned conference champion, Georgia Southern’s head coach Willie Fritz didn’t find the feat all that impressive.

“I was at [an FCS] program before I came to Georgia Southern and I always felt like there wasn’t a whole lot of difference between the high level [FCS] schools and most of Division I schools, and you talk about us and App that are traditionally two of the best one [FCS] football teams making the vault,” Fritz said.

Fritz said he believes big wins at the FCS level, combined with a good coaching staff, assured the team they’d be successful when they decided to make the move to the FBS. “I think its just been the fact that we have good players and good coaches we have a history with beating Florida and Appalachian has a history of beating Michigan and I think it gives confidence that you can play at the next level and be successful,” Fritz said.

Appalachian State and Georgia Southern proved this season that they are among the highest caliber teams in the Sun Belt Conference and are some of the most rapidly ascending teams in the current NCAA landscape.

A CHARITY OPPORTUNITY CLOSE TO HOME

BY QUENTIN RUSSELL OPINION WRITER As much as we stress the importance of charity this time of year, charity creates a dilemma. How do we ensure that the money we give will truly support the cause?

Luckily, those of us at Appalachian State have an opportunity right now to give in a way that we know could do good.

Last spring, Nepal suffered two major earthquakes which devastated the country and have created effects that linger to this day.

Many of us may remember that tragedy, but how many have heard of the incredible link between that event and our own campus community?

Dinesh Paudel, a sustainable development professor, is a native of Nepal. Last summer, I sat down with Paudel to discuss what life had been like for him following the earthquake.

Following some initial uncertainty about the safety of his family, Paudel was able to find that his family had made it out alive, but that much of what they owned was destroyed. So was most of Saipu, his home village.

When I spoke to Paudel, he had already been to Nepal to see his family and assist in relief efforts. He said he would soon be returning and that he was committed to doing what he needed to do to help his community recover.

One of the most meaningful parts of that endeavor for Paudel is the reconstruction of Saipu’s schoolhouse. Paudel actually helped build the school originally in 1999.

The school was an important part of the community because of the opportunities it provided to the children of that village, particularly girls.

To help Paudel finance the rebuilding, some of his colleagues have set up a GofundMe page. The goal is to raise money in time to have the school built before winter, according to the page.

They are trying to raise $14,000; so far they have raised just over $1,500.

For those looking to do some good, I strongly urge you to donate to this cause. Not only does it help fill an important need, but it will be administered by someone whose knowledge and passion ensure that the money will be used appropriately.

Paudel, by virtue of both his deep involvement in this community and academic background, is the perfect person to carry out this task. And we can, and should, help him do it.

This holiday season, we have a great opportunity to help a member of the university community and make the lives of some children much better. We should take advantage of that opportunity.

Sixteen shots, that’s “all” it took for Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke to subdue Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old boy armed only with a 3 inch knife. His only crime: vandalizing a police car.

Meanwhile, Robert Lewis Dear, a 57-year-old man, who is allegedly responsible for killing three people and wounding nine at a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs, was brought in with nary a scratch on him.

How is it, that a man who allegedly planned and carried out a heinous attack that resulted in the death of a police officer ends up in jail, while a boy engaging in an impromptu act of vandalism is gunned down and left on the street?

The answer to that is pretty simple; some would say it's black and white. The reason for the difference in their treatment is because McDonald is black and Dear is white.

While the McDonald shooting may have happened over a year ago in October 2014, it is only now that the dash cam footage of the murder has been released. It shows McDonald walking down the road as police officers tell him to stop.

He continues to walk away until he is gunned down by Van Dyke, who unloaded his gun into the boy, killing him on the scene. Had McDonald been white, it can be almost assured that Van Dyke would have opted to use his taser instead of his gun.

Now, 13 months later, officer Van Dyke is being charged with first-degree murder for shooting McDonald, which seems like justice, except for the fact that Van Dyke is now out on bail.

Not only that, but Dean Angelo, the head of the local Fraternal Order of Police Union, has made statements saying Van Dyke believed what he did was “justified.”

Van Dyke has only received minimal sanctions from the police department, amounting only to a suspension without pay after he was charged, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It seems like this will be a nice cherry on top of the 18 complaints he has received during his time as an officer. These range from racist slurs to pointing his gun at someone he had just arrested without justification, according to Yahoo! News.

Why does this keep happening? Why, after all the race-based shootings in the last three years, are police officers still doing this? Even better, why are they still getting away with this?

It's because, despite all the civil rights efforts in the last 60 years, young black men are still portrayed as future thugs and criminals. Many times in the eye of the public, and especially the police, a young black man's future is robbed from him before he even has a chance.

This misrepresentation is causing young black teens to be gunned down for minor offenses, while white domestic terrorists such as Dear and Dylann Roof are brought in unharmed. These young men are being condemned before they even have an opportunity to show that this is not who they are.

Michael Brown Jr, Tamir Rice, Cameron Tillman, Laquan McDonald, Quesean Whitten and Roshad McIntosh are just some of the young men who didn’t have to die.

Police officers have shown time and time again with white offenders that they can bring them in alive, so why are they choosing to kill these young men? They're not even fully grown and yet they're being killed without being given the chance to prove everyone wrong.

It’s time that we all took a serious look at the endemic racism that exists in police horses across the nation. None of these victims had to die, and none of them deserved it.
