he Positive Post-it Day is set to return to Appalachian State University for the second time on Feb. 22.

The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Office of the Dean of Students, University Admissions, the Office of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, the Appalachian Cheerleading Team and many more, as well as by individual donations and volunteering.

There will be four boards throughout campus located at Crossroads, Wired Scholar, Roess Dining Hall and Trivette Dining Hall, with Post-it notes hot glued onto the board so that people can just reach out and write a note without having to provide their own Post-its.

Samantha Bender, junior marketing major, is behind the Positive Post-it Day, which was held for the first time on Feb. 9, 2015 following the student deaths that occurred on campus.

“It was started last year because there was just a lot going on on our campus,” Bender said. “I know the Dean of Students really well so I just reached out to him and said ‘What can we do about this?’ I wished we could give notes to everyone, but that just didn’t seem feasible. When the Post-it Note idea stuck in my head I just thought it was so beautiful in it’s own simple way.”

The event has its own Facebook page, which has been shared with over 1,500 people. Of that, over 700 people have said they are either going or are interested in participating.

“One thing I do want to emphasize is that even though this event is in honor of the deaths on campus last year, I don’t want that to be what this is reflecting this year,” Bender said. “Some people are freshmen this year and I don’t want them to have that view in their head that this is what this is all about.”

Anthony Morlacci, senior appropriate technology major, said he was dealing with a personal issue the weekend before the event last year. When he saw the Post-its on campus, he decided to participate and said he remembers going from completely upset to much more hopeful.

“I think the idea behind the event is very important and very nice because we all are going through our own struggles,” Morlacci said. “With this positive support and caring words, this can change many people’s days. These aren’t about people dying, not at all the reason this is done. This is about making everyone feel important and giving a positive environment.”

Last year, Bender said she planned the event on her own and was so passionate that she went out and spent about $75 on supplies for the event, although she was unsure whether it would be successful or not.

“I was really nervous when I did it last year because I put these boards

throughout campus and then I had class all morning so I was thinking I might go out there and there would be no Post-it notes anywhere, that would be so embarrassing,” Bender said.

Bender said it is impossible for her to calculate how many Post-it notes were spread throughout campus last year. The Post-it event started on Monday and continued throughout the rest of the week. On the Thursday of that week alone she collected about 300 Post-its.

“Not knowing the success of it, I truly thought there may have been 300 Postits around campus and that maybe those would have stayed there, but I didn’t think it would be such a movement,” Bender said.

Bender said one of her favorite notes reads: “When I first saw these I was skeptical. How can someone tell me I’m beautiful if they don’t even know me?

But the fact of the matter is that each one of these sticky notes was written by someone who doesn’t need to know you to know that they want you to be happy.

There is still good in the world.”

“I just thought that person totally got it,” Bender said. “We don’t need to know you to know that you’re worth something.”

Campus Cursive, a new club on campus that works to spread love and reach students through encouraging words, is helping to sponsor the event by donating Post-its. The event’s mission is in line with that of the club, as they aim to remind people of their value and to bring the community together, Emily Bradley, senior communication, advertising major and co-founder of Campus Cursive, said.

“Life is difficult and messy and [it] can sometimes be heartbreaking,” Bradley said. “People carry around their struggles and hide them from the world because this is what society tells them to do. Random acts of kindness are a simple way to let people know that they are loved and are not alone. It’s a beautiful thing when your words or actions have an impact on someone.”

Bender said she would like for the event to become continue and become tradition even after she graduates. Depending on the outcome of this year’s event, she hopes to find someone passionate enough who she can trust to pass the project down to.

“I think that if you write a Post-it you don’t know who you’re affecting,” Bender said. “I’ve had people contact me telling me that they had just bombed an interview, that people’s family members have passed away and that this event really helped them and that’s what fueled me this year. I knew this wasn’t just something pretty on campus, that it’s meaningful. Whether it’s to five people on campus or 500, I’ll never know but I know that it worked. If you pass one of these boards, write something that you believe is true to this campus.”

THE MERC WITH A MOUTH: DEADPOOL IS AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO THE SUPERHERO GENRE

D

o you want to see a superhero try to save the world? A moral, uplifting character to inspire young children to be good and care for the welfare of others? I’m sorry, but “Deadpool” is not this character, and this is not that kind of movie.

“Deadpool” is the story of Wade Wilson, played by Ryan Reynolds, a mercenary who is diagnosed with cancer just as he and his fiancé start working toward a life together. One day he is offered the chance to rid his body of cancer and make himself into the world’s newest superhero. However, this is not a superhero movie.

Released on Feb. 12, “Deadpool” breaks the fourth wall, where the fictional character is involved in the plot but also acknowledges the audience, and holds a middle finger up at its own production with opening titles that say the film was produced by “asshats” and directed by “an overpaid tool.” “Deadpool” is tied in with the X-Men universe, but filmmakers were not afraid to make jokes about the large number of comic strip superhero movies being released in such a short period of time.

This movie would be nothing without its foulmouthed, Freddy Krueger-faced frontman Reynolds.

He never stops talking throughout the whole movie; he is either bad mouthing the characters around him or talking his thoughts directly to the audience, true to comic book form.

IGN’s Daniel Krupa wrote, “He’s charismatic, exuberant and larger-than-life, which isn’t easy considering how much of the film he spent either in a full-body costume or beneath heavy prosthetics.”

Reynolds isn’t all crass humor and foul language though. He brings a genuine hilarity to the movie. He also brings an absurd amount of one-liners and penis jokes, though each one was worth at least a chuckle.

His strongest humor comes in during offbeat situations like taking a cab to the main fight scene or

making jokes at a woman as she struggles to build IKEA furniture. Reynolds leaves no moment for humor behind, and he never fails to hit the nail on the head with his jokes and absurd behavior.

The “merc with a mouth” is the newest recordbreaking box office hero, according to Entertainment Weekly’s website. One of their writers, Devan Coggan, wrote that the movie brought in about $135 million dollars during its opening weekend. That makes “Deadpool” the first R rated movie to break $100 million in its opening weekend, Coggan said.

This surpassed the record sales set last year by the “Fifty Shades of Grey” premiere.

If you feel the urge to check Rotten Tomatoes before throwing your money to the local movie theater, let me save you the trouble: even Rotten Tomatoes thinks highly of “Deadpool.”

The website gave the movie an 84% rating, with 159 fresh ratings and only 31 rotten. The critics consensus said, “Fast, funny and gleefully profane, the fourth-wall-busting ‘Deadpool’ subverts superhero film formula with wildly entertaining, and decidedly non-family friendly, results.”

I have grown up in a comic book culture. No, I’m not a marvel fan because I saw Toby McGuire spinning webs as a child. On Saturdays, my friends and I would visit our local comic book shop and pick up whatever new comics had arrived to the store. One of those days I saw the red masked man on the cover holding a taco in his hand, which was interesting enough for me to pick up.

I read through the comic and the character cursed when he was punched in the gut, spit out crude humor at every possible chance and spoke directly to me as a comic reader, breaking the fourth wall.

He didn’t pretend he had some divine mission to accomplish or that good always wins in the end.

“Deadpool” is so humanistic that I could do much more than look up to him, I could relate to him.

Watching the movie was exactly like reading the comic. Reynolds speaks directly to the audience, pointing out what was important, what was funny and what he was feeling in the exact moment of every situation.

Nothing was sugar-coated in an attempt to make this movie for the whole family. Every lack of political correctness and flip of the bird added sincerity of the movie keeping to its comic predecessor.

This movie was the beginning to what I hope becomes a very beautiful addition to the superhero movie franchise. With the ties to X-Men made within the film, I can only hope to see more of “Deadpool” beyond the sequel that has already been announced.

To quote the movie, “’Deadpool’…that sounds like a franchise.” This is only the beginning. We will be seeing much more of this mercenary.

TALKIN’ TACOS

THREE TACO SPOTS IN BOONE THAT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

oyote Kitchen intricately layers each of their tacos with savory ingredients for a unique taste. Boone Saloon cranks out hundreds of tacos every Tuesday from their food truck sized kitchen. TApp Room goes for juicy tacos with signature sauces on Wednesdays. These three places highlight some of the popular taco spots in Boone.

TApp Room is the taco joint across the street from Holmes Convocation Center, Boone Saloon is the taco spot on King Street and Coyote Kitchen is the taco place in Southgate Shopping Center with an atmosphere for both college folk and locals alike. Each place has a unique style to the way they produce each taco, where they get their ingredients, the way they promote and serve their tacos and of course, each has their own spin on how their tacos taste.

Coyote Kitchen was opened by its current owners in 2006 and labels itself as “southwest Caribbean soul food,” though general manager Danny Bock said it has become more southwestern as the menu continues to evolve and new dishes are created.

With sauteed onions atop roasted red peppers, corn and Kobe Wagyu beef, an extra tender Japanese-style beef, all on a bed of jalapeno cream cheese, Coyote Kitchen carries tacos that exude bold and complex flavors. Attracting people with special diets such as vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free, “There is something for everyone,” Bock said.

They offer six different tacos: shrimp, tilapia, jerk chicken, rosemary chicken, Kobe beef and jerk tempeh, all announcing their flavors loudly but cohesively on the first bite. “Subtlety is not really in our vocabulary,” Bock said. Their four different salsas prove this as well

with flavors including chipotle cranberry, pineapple habanero, classic pico de gallo and mango lime.

The jerk chicken sauce drips from the chicken and out of the tortilla on the other end of the taco – as well as the other taco ingredients in each stuffed taco. Bock attested to this fact saying, “Our philosophy is if it’s not messy, it’s not worth eating.”

Coyote Kitchen has a “commitment to [their] ingredients.”

“We try to find that balance point between what is affordable for the customer and what is the best thing that we can put on the plate,” Bock said.

While Coyote Kitchen has found that balance, Boone Saloon has found their success in a Taco Tuesday special characterized by classic tacos make quick to order for just a $1.50.

Boone Saloon was opened in February 2004 and began Boone’s first Taco Tuesday in 2005, Skip Sinanian, owner of Boone Saloon, said. He began the Tuesday taco deal because, “It’s alliterative, it’s Taco Tuesday,” he said.

When Sinanian bought the space, the walls were pink and green, with drop ceilings and the now exposed brick wall was covered in sheet rock. Now with a live edge wood bar and liquor shelf, abstract art, skateboarding photography, pool tables and TVs on every wall, the place attracts both hip locals and college students.

Offering four taco types, beef, chicken, pork and veggie burger tacos, they operate on a uniform taco and quantity service, unlike their other food which is made for quality. “Really, it’s all about they’re cheap and you can eat a bunch of them,” Sinanian said.

With house-made green verde sauce covering their pulled pork tacos, one could be convinced that maybe in fact, though the most popular taco choice is usually the chicken tacos, the best tasting tacos might be the pork ones.

The other tacos at Boone Saloon are simple but classic tacos, made with monterey cheese, lettuce and a house-made mild fresca sauce. These tacos are simple, and they are what the people want while watching sports and having a couple of brews, especially on a Tuesday.

But on Wednesday, one can drive by TApp Room, and if it’s a sunny day, see a plethora of people sitting on the porch, tacos in hand, for TApp Room’s Taco Wednesday.

Selling four different tacos, tequila shrimp, chicken, pork and cod, TApp Room is about simplicity, but variety in each taco.

“Tequila, salt, garlic, peppers and scallions. That’s it, that’s like the secret sauce right there,” Kevin Pearce, TApp Room kitchen manager, described about the grilled shrimp tacos. “It gets a little cilantro and lime sour cream sauce on the top.”

But these aren’t the only TApp tacos that can call attention to themselves.

Pearce said “The pork tacos are just an amalgamation of all of [the tacos] come together.”

These tacos are topped with crispy onions that are typically seen on a green bean casserole – but think again. They have become a trend for burgers, but TApp Room has taken these crunchy toppings and added them in a barbecue taco, made with local pulled pork, ‘slaw and the “doctored up” sweet and spicy barbecue sauce.

With house-made queso and pico on the grilled chicken tacos, onion sticks on the barbecue tacos, flavorful grilled shrimp ones and a standard New Orleans style cod fish taco, the song that’s playing in TApp Room, “Think I’m In Love” by Beck is all too appropriate.

“I still definitely eat chicken tacos after four years of making tacos,” Pearce said. “The chicken tacos are the most popular and I’d say the best, but they are all really good.”

Whether it is an overflowing taco from Coyote Kitchen, the classic hard shell tacos from Boone Saloon on a Tuesday or a TApp Room taco that drips some type of house-made sauce, one is surely able to find a taco to meet all their wants and desires in Boone.

PROVIDING 'FUR'EVER HOMES

BOONE LOCAL PROVIDES SAFE SANCTUARY FOR CATS

ove, Bones and Furever Homes is a no-kill, non-profit rescue center operated by Kourtney Wunsch and her husband out of their home in Boone.

Wunsch currently has nearly 100 cats in the rescue, aproximately 30 of which live in her house. She started the rescue center in July 2015 after getting married and experiencing some health issues.

“I was really looking for something to do in my own time where I could rest when I got tired, and I’d always wanted to open a rescue,” Wunsch said. “I just didn’t think we would be able to at our age and where we were in life. We started really, really small and it has just exploded from there.”

Her husband encouraged her to start the foster program and turn her dream became a reality. She grew up around animals her whole life and spent time at the University of Alabama volunteering with the local animal shelter.

“My volunteer work was with kids and the animal shelter,” Wunsch said. “I just ended up working at the animal shelter instead of volunteering, so it all really started there. That was my first experience with an animal shelter and from there it just hooked me.”

Cats were easier for Wunsch to rescue and adopt than dogs, because there are more politics and opposition involved with adopting out the dogs and rescuing them from shelters. There are also many more dog rescue centers in the area than there are cat rescues.

“There’s only about eight cat rescues in the state of North Carolina,” Wunsch said.

Although it is an all-cat shelter, she will take in other small animals. Wunsch rescues most of the cats through shelters that euthanize a large number of animals each week and she also takes in owner surrenders for people who no longer want their cat, but do not want them to go to an animal shelter.

“The cats that we take in [from the animal shelter] are going to die that very day,” Wunsch said.

She is unable to rescue all of them, because sometimes people give her problems and opposing groups may intervene with her.

Cats that do not live in her house are fostered at other people’s houses in North Carolina. Wunsch usually only lets people foster a maximum of four cats, but some of her close friends are currently fostering 12 cats. “[The foster system is] very helpful and it allows us to take in more cats,” Wunsch said.

Emily Dinnsen, senior management major, is a volunteer at Love, Bones and Furever Homes. She has been friends with Wunsch for four years and helped her when she started the shelter. Dinnsen became more involved with the organization two months ago. She helps with the contracts and transportation of the cats.

“I currently foster four cats that came from a hoarding situation,” Dinnsen said.

since October 2015. She helps out with everything from paperwork to administering medicine, depending on the day.

“I heard about it through Craigslist because my boyfriend and I were looking to foster and went to Kourtney’s house and fell in love with it,” Fletcher said.

She and her boyfriend ended up adopting their 6-month-old kitten, Malcom, through the organization.

The couple liked that they were able to interact with the kitten on a personal level before they adopted him.

“I really like getting to know the people who come in who want to adopt the cats,” Fletcher said. “I enjoy helping find them a good home.”

Wunsch and Fletcher believe that there are many benefits to adopting from Love, Bones and Furever Homes.

Since the cats have free reign of Wunsch’s house, customers are able to see each cat’s true personalities and bond with them before they adopt.

Wunsch also does not put a restraint on the amount of time someone spends with a cat before they decide to adopt.

“With us you are really able to see their personality,” Wunsch said, “I do what needs to be done for the cats.”

Besides preventing cats from being euthanized, Wunsch wants to help the animal shelters and communities. The Watauga County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, so she does not rescue from them.

“We want to help the animals, but we also want to help the shelters get on the no-kill bandwagon,” Wunsch said.

Although most adoptions at Love, Bones and Furever Homes are run out of Wunsch’s house, she holds events around Boone where the cats are out for adoption. She mainly runs adoptions out at the Mast General Store on King Street when it is warm and the Boone Town Mall when it is cooler out.

The adoption fee for Love, Bones and Furever Homes is $50 for all cats. Since Wunsch utilizes online advertising on Facebook and rescueme. org, she also adopts to people out of state. Love, Bones and Furever Homes is on Facebook along with photos and brief blurbs about each cat that is available for adoption or fostering.

Despite an 18-36 record thus far, second year head coach Jim Fox will be the center piece in the rise of App State basketball.

FINDING THE RIGHT PIECES

I

nstilling a winning culture doesn’t happen overnight, not at a school whose Division I basketball team has been stuck in mediocrity for the better part of 43 years. Not for a program who has only been to the big dance twice, with the last time coming at the dawn of the new millennium. Not for a team that hasn’t won a conference title since 2010 and hasn’t won more than 16 games this decade. No, it takes time to to learn how to win. It takes losing to learn what it’s like to taste victory.

Head coach Jim Fox’s team is learning that right now, stuck in the midst of a 6-19 season and still looking for their first win in the month of February. This is the same team that had the lofty goal of competing for the Sun Belt title in October before the season started.

Although their record is below where they wanted it to be, and the chances of advancing to the Sun Belt tournament are slimming by the day, all is not lost this season.

There have been bright spots for this six-win team, many more than other six-win teams might have. Senior guard and standout Frank Eaves, one of those bright spots, has provided the leadership for this team, doing everything he can to help the team stay in games while steadily building up his own stock, with a professional career potentially in his future. Eaves is one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball and it’s a shame his final season will go down as one of the more disappointing ones in 10

Appalachian State history.

Unfortunately for Eaves, he won’t be around the next few years to experience what is potentially shaping up to be one of the best stretches of basketball Appalachian State has experienced since Bobby Cremins was here in the ‘70s and early ‘80s.

The Mountaineers have young talent, with four freshmen and two sophomores on their roster this season, and it is reasonable to expect significant improvement from all six players going into next season.

Of the four freshmen, shooting guard and small forward Ronshad Shabazz looks to be the biggest piece of the puzzle when it comes to the future.

Shabazz, not highly recruited out of high school, came to Appalachian State with a lot to prove.

After averaging only 9.9 points and 3.2 rebounds a game during his senior year of high school at Huntington Prep, Shabazz is averaging 11.7 points and 3.7 rebounds a game against Division I competition.

What’s most impressive about his game is how well-rounded of a scorer he is already. Most freshmen at mid-major schools come in unable to do half of the things that Shabazz is capable of doing. He has nearly unlimited shooting range, can create his own shot off the bounce and is able to drive the lane and finish at the rim. This description sounds a lot like Frank Eaves now, which is one of the biggest reasons the future is so bright for Mountaineer basketball.

Assuming he continues to improve throughout his time here, he will be a matchup nightmare for any team in the nation, let alone the Sun Belt.

Shabazz’s big man counterpart Tyrell Johnson is poised to be the perfect counterpart to a ball-dominant guard.

Johnson doesn’t need the ball to thrive, as he excels as a lengthy, ultra-athletic big.

He is adept at crashing the offensive glass, grabbing 8.5 percent of all offensive rebound opportunities when he’s on the floor, which is impressive considering how undersized he is compared to the competition. Johnson stands an impressive 6 feet 8 inches tall but only weighs in at 200 pounds, making him incredibly light for a Division I center.

By comparison, Jacob Lawson, also an uber athletic center, is 6 feet 8 inches tall and 237 pounds. But it is incredibly rare for a freshman to come in at the right weight, especially freshmen who aren’t on the national radar. If all goes to plan, Johnson will bulk up over the next few years, making him one of the premier bigs in the Sun Belt.

Also a member of the current freshman class, Bennett Holley is the stretch-forward that coaches dream about at night. Holley is shooting 46.9 percent from 3-point land so far in his rookie campaign, a ridiculously good number that gets even better when you remember that he’s a 6-foot-8 power forward. With a sweet stroke like that, pairing him next to Johnson would create nightmares for opposing teams

trying to figure out how to guard such versatile big men.

In the end, the brightest beacon of hope for Appalachian State basketball is head coach Jim Fox and his staff. It can’t be exaggerated as to how key Fox is in turning around the program. Currently in his second year, play under Fox has improved despite the team’s poor record. His team plays a lot of close games, and has suffered a lot of heartache. So far this season the team has lost six games by just six points or less, four of which were one-point losses. Those are games that teams with more experience win, games this team will start to win towards the end of this year and next season, especially under Fox. Fox knows what it takes to bring a program into relevancy, having experienced it during his time as an assistant under coach Bob McKillop at Davidson College. While they had a special player by the name of Stephen Curry, there is more to winning than the talents of one individual.

Luckily for Fox, he has a special player in Ronshad Shabazz who can help key this program’s ascension in the college ranks in a similar way to what Davidson experienced. While Shabazz is by no means a Curry-type talent, he does have the right tools and the talent around him to build the winning culture under Fox that Appalachian State needs.

It probably won’t happen this year, but for the first time the pieces are in place for long term success at a program that has never tasted it.

SENIORS LOOK TO EXTEND ACHIEVEMENTS

W

ith the end of the season just a few months away, Appalachian State’s men’s tennis team will be losing close to half their team to graduation this spring.

Zach Bost, Oliver Casey, Jan-Willem Kleynhans and Steve Lake are all playing their final season for the Mountaineers. The four teammates have all made appearances in both singles and doubles matches throughout their careers in the regular season and at the conference level.

“They’ve just matured so much,” head coach Bob Lake said. “They came as little skinny kids and they got big and strong. That’s probably the biggest thing is the maturity, they’ve grown into men and they’re going to go on and graduate.”

Bost came to the Mountaineers from Jefferson, Georgia as a freshman and has a career singles record of 27-40 and a doubles record of 29-34. Over the years, Bost has moved seeds depending on the needs of the team, but frequents as App State’s No. 3 or No. 4 slot for singles. He has also alternated between all three seeds for doubles and has consistently played in them throughout his career.

“I think we’ve all grown up a lot and become really good friends on and off the court,” Bost said. “We’ve really come into ourselves as players and we have a lot to offer for the team in the future.”

App State reached across the map to bring in Casey, who is originally from Melbourne, Australia. Casey has been on a steady upward trend since joining the Mountaineers, making it to the No. 1 singles seed by 2014. Casey has been the primary No. 1 singles player for Appalachian in the 2015-16 seasons. Like Bost, he also frequents playing doubles for the team, but the seed is inconsistent. Casey boasts a career singles record for the Mountaineers of 27-21, and a doubles record of 23-22.

Kleynhans started his career primarily playing at the No. 5 spot for the Mountaineers. Originally from Stellenbosch, South Africa, Kleynhans signed on to the Mountaineers in 2012 with the other three seniors. Occasionally playing as the No. 6 for the Mountaineers, Kleynhans still frequents in his original No. 5 spot for singles.

Following the same pattern as his teammates for doubles, he has alternated between all three doubles seeds with various partners during his career. Kleynhans currently holds a singles career record of 24-28 and a doubles record of 19-30.

Kleynhans said that despite his career achievements thus far, his senior season is as much about the rest of the team, besides the seniors, as it is himself.

Continuing the tradition of Appalachian State tennis players, Steve Lake will also be finishing his career for the men’s tennis team this spring. His older brother, Bobby Lake, also played for the team during his college career. Steve Lake currently competes under head coach Bob Lake, who is also his father. He primarily assists the team as a doubles contender with a career doubles record of 16-20 and a singles record of 2-2.

The seniors will play 16 more season matches alongside their teammates before taking on their last Sun Belt Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Kleynhans said he hopes to leave his younger teammates with a winning season and a hard work ethic so they that can succeed in future years as well.

All four seniors will join the rest of the team to play the Campbell Camels on Saturday.

CLUB CYCLING FINDS WAYS TO TRAIN DESPITE WINTER SETBACKS

T

he yearly transition to winter in Boone means a lot of things for App State’s club sports teams: practices get colder, fall sports come to a close and snow becomes a mainstay. And while clubs teams like Alpine Ski and Snowboarding rejoice at the sight of Boone’s snowy offering, teams like cycling bemoan its arrival, as it signals that the long season of road cycling, beginning in February, is quickly approaching and training must begin.

“For me, that first long ride is always very hard,” club president Eric Burton said.

“By the end of it I’m usually pretty sore, ready for some food and I’m spacing out a bit. It’s definitely rough.”

Those long rides begin in December, when members of the team begin regularly logging between 45 and 70 miles of cycling over the course of three to five hour rides.

“It’s not supposed to be fast, it’s supposed to be slow,” Burton said. “It’s just that constant, repetitive motion. You’re just riding easy for a very long time in the beginning of the season to get that aspect of your fitness as a base before you start doing the high intensity stuff at the beginning of the race season.”

For most competitors, December is a lonely month of training rooted in many solo rides.

“Since it’s over Christmas break, we try to do group rides, but a lot of us are spread out everywhere,” club secretary Hunter Hill said. “When the semester starts back it’s really a lot of group rides with the team.”

While some dread the solo rides of December and January, others on the team, such as vice president Annie Pharr, appreciate the solidarity it affords.

“It’s a great way to unplug from everything,” Pharr said. “You get in the zone of cycling so you can push everything that doesn’t matter in that moment away. It’s nice.”

When the spring semester arrives, the real work begins. When weather permits, members of the team continue to ride outdoors once or twice a week despite the obstacles Boone and the surrounding towns create.

“The roads up here in the winter are just terrible for your bike,” Burton said. “The salt they put on it gets in all the little moving parts, so every single time you go out you have to thoroughly clean your bike or else it’ll start to wear out really quickly.

You also get these snow banks that it takes like a week to melt, so it’s always kind of slushy.”

Outdoor rides take place anywhere from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Bethel, the Tennessee state line, Jefferson, Wilkesboro and everywhere in between — with a small caveat, rider Justin Evans said.

“You don’t ride on 321, you don’t ride on 421, but [you can ride] pretty much anywhere outside of there,” Evans said.

Many riders incentivize their solo training by attempting to become “king” or “queen of the mountain” on Strava, an app which allows riders to measure their speed and time on a specific segment of road and compare that to other users who’ve documented their time on that same stretch of road. The app also saves previous trips and allows riders to look back and measure against their personal bests.

The team also has group rides on the weekends in Lenoir and Wilkesboro, utilizing that time to practice group riding techniques such as drafting, in which a cyclist trails another cyclist’s back tire close enough that they block the wind and conserve energy while maintaining their speed, among others.

Pharr said the team also practices traveling in a unit, similar to a semi-truck on the 12

road, a formation which allows them to move slowly as a group uphill, but carry the momentum downhill to save energy and improve speed on a long ride.

When Boone’s winter wrath refuses to relent, however, the team moves things indoors and utilizes the university’s CompuTrainers, an advanced indoor cycle unit, twice a week to keep them from falling behind in their training. The CompuTrainer generates a virtual world with hills to ascend and descend to mimic an outdoor ride, adjusting the bike’s resistance accordingly. It also creates avatars for the four riders so they can race against each other.

Because the university only has four CompuTrainers, the team often rotates between two groups of four to complete an hour long, high intensity indoor riding session. With 30 members in the club though, there are weeks where certain riders don’t have a spot available and must train on their own.

Led by coach Sean Weddell, the team will completes a mix of flat, time-trial cardio workouts and interval training routines. Then Weddell leads the team through core exercises and resistance training off the bike.

While the team is thankful to have access to the CompuTrainers, Burton said there is just no replacement for outdoor riding.

“I spend a max of an hour because you’re just staring at a screen,” Burton said.

Unfortunately for Burton and the rest of the team, after a relatively mild December and January, the true winter has seemingly just begun. In the last three weeks, Boone has been hit by snow at least once each week, therefore the indoor training continues.

The team competes in their first action of the road cycling season during the weekend of Feb. 27 at the College of William & Mary, the first of the team’s eight races before the USAC Collegiate Road Nationals begins in Asheville on May 6.

ach year 12.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer , according to the Huffington Post.

With February being National Cancer Prevention Month, it is important to be educated about all cancers and how they can be prevented. But this cannot happen if some cancers get more attention than others for all of the wrong reasons.

Although breast cancer is not the most deadly cancer and doesn’t affect the most people, it does receive the majority of money.

The funded amount that went to breast cancer was a little over $110.3 million as of August 2015, which is the greatest amount for any cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

This might seem strange because lung cancer, which received the third highest amount in funding, is the leading cause of death in women, while breast cancer is the second, according to the American Cancer Society.

If this is the case, why is breast cancer receiving so much attention?

One big reason for the massive campaigns for breast cancer is that companies want to target a female audience to improve their image.

For many of these campaigns, the numbers just don’t add up.

One thing that organizations such as the Komen Foundation could do is to only accept direct donations from companies, instead of letting the companies create campaigns that are designed to profit them without doing much to help the cause.

Organizations could also make more of their own awareness campaigns to bring more attention to all types of cancers, instead of relying so heavily on companies.

Breast cancer is important, and we should work to do all we can to combat the disease. Still, the cynical marketing campaigns surrounding this illness have the double negative effect of taking attention away from other cancers without doing much for breast cancer.

It is time we give all cancers the attention they deserve, and start supporting the cause in a way that gets results for those suffering.

SHOW DEVOTION TO SUSTAINABILITY WITH SOLAR CAR SUPPORT

I

n an unassuming warehouse off U.S. Route 421, a group of diligent students on Appalachian State's very own Solar Vehicle Team work relentlessly to finish the final draft of their 2016 vehicle design report.

Everyone is working hard to make the draft neat and well put together to show the school's Office of General Counsel to be able to get insurance approval.

The team is serious about racing in the 2016 American Solar Challenge, a national collegiate race between a variety of colleges.

Since Dan Blakeley started the project in fall 2013, the team has been working to show the school and the community how a solar car can be a sustainable and reliable source of transportation.

Although the project has faculty advisers, it has been student-driven from the start. This makes the project 100 percent student-made, and shows just how much these students care about making a solar car.

The reason driving these students is simple: sustainability.

Sustainability has been a big goal for the university, and a car that runs off nothing but sunlight could be a great project for the school to get involved in.

With the school’s help and backing, the team could go on to the American Solar Challenge and compete among other schools, showing how dedicated Appalachian State really is to being totally sustainable.

The team is dedicated to not only to make a car fit for racing, but to drive home the point that a solar powered car can be a big step toward sustainability.

As students, we should step up to help our fellow students and show how much we all care about advancing sustainability.

2015 where collegiate solar car teams from all over America met to talk techniques and share new findings with each other. The Appalachian State team was approached by Iowa State's team, who offered their previous car body as a friendly push into the sport.

However, winning a race is not everything for this group of students. They want to research the subject so when solar energy becomes more widespread, the information will have already done some of the groundwork.

As solar panel technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, this sort of research will help push solar energy into becoming a commercialized, renewable resource for everyone to use, Blakely said.

The sun produces enough energy in an hour to fill the worlds energy ticket for a year, according to National Geographic. This is amazing to think about. After all,

if one hour of sun can produce enough energy for the whole world, imagine where one hour of sun can take you if it is energizing your car.

On a sunny day, the car can run for about 400 miles, traveling within a range of 70-75 mph, depending on road conditions. Every car’s performance varies when adding in environmental factors.

In addition, the car is completely self-sufficient.

Even hybrid cars have to recharge their batteries at some point, which still uses energy from non-renewable resources. With this car, all you need is the sun to be able to charge the battery.

Solar car racing is not a cheap sport, though. The team would need $70,000 to go to preliminaries and the race.

The Renewable Energy Initiative is one of the teams biggest funders, while the rest comes from companies, friends, family and even team members themselves.

However, this does not mean that the team is well off to getting the amount they need.

The website offers a donation page and an “Adopt-aPart” program where you can help pay for a piece of the car or trip and get credited for it. You can even get some Appalachian State Solar Car apparel while you're at it.

This project is a great representation of our campus community. It shows the determination of the students here and the desire they have to make a difference int he world.

This event, as well as the whole project, gives us a great opportunity to becoming personally involved in building a more sustainable world. We should take advantage of it.
