News Life after Boone: What’s in store for seniors after graduation April 14, 2022

Hollie Moore | Senior News Reporter

With graduation approaching, seniors are finalizing plans for travel destinations, jobs and internships. Taking their post-graduation agenda to a different country, Harriet Enzor, an early-graduated senior, plans to plant roots in Japan. “I’m going to be over there for, like, 16 months, so I have to really prepare myself to be away from family and friends, and because of COVID, I probably can’t leave the country,” Enzor said. Following a path far from their degree in electronic media and broadcasting, Enzor plans to move overseas to teach English to Japanese students through a program called Access. “I wouldn’t say I have immature enthusiasm. I know it’s going to be difficult for me, the first, probably, six months,” Enzor said. “So, I am excit-

ed. I think I have a normal amount of nervousness and apprehension.” Madison Belk, a senior psychology major, is also in the process of lining up an internship after graduation. Belk will shadow Dr. Stephanie Cave at Cypress Family Medicine in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “I’m planning on taking some more classes after graduation this spring, and I’m lining up an internship with one of the nation’s foremost doctors working with neurotoxicity and autism,” Belk said. Belk spent her time at the university studying psychology, which benefited her as vice president of the Psychology Club. However, more recently in her academic career, she discovered a different passion: neurobiology. She plans to research neurotoxicology, and how heavy metal and

chemical toxicity can lead to cognitive disorders, especially autism and dementia. Belk said she looks to do post-bachelor’s research and will study abroad in Europe before entering a doctoral program in neurobiology. Brooke Parrish, a senior journalism major, will join the Disney College Program this summer. After graduating in May, Parrish will move to Orlando, Florida, for the program. “I’ve always dreamed about working for Disney. I love the film and entertainment industry and someday hope to work for Disney or Pixar Animation Studios,” Parrish said. “I feel like this program is a step in the right direction.” Parrish said she is confident the skills she developed through her jour-

nalism degree will help her in the Disney College Program and her anticipated future writing career. “I think journalism is a good background skill to have as far as making my writing and communication skills stronger,” Parrish said. “I really want to be a writer for Disney and Marvel shows.” Mary Neill Lucas, a senior child development major, will return to her hometown church in Hendersonville. She plans to serve as a Reformed University Fellowship intern at Davidson College. RUF is a campus ministry reaching college students from all backgrounds with “the hope of Jesus Christ,” according to its website. “RUF has been a huge part of my life, and I am excited to make connections with college students, spread the

gospel, see others grow and serve him well and to learn more about myself,” Lucas said. Lucas said she supports their mission, especially since she will be following in her dad’s footsteps, who also served as an RUF intern after graduation. As an intern, Lucas will meet with students one-on-one, plan events, lead Bible studies and minister to students at Davidson College. “After the RUF internship, I plan to go to seminary for counseling. Then I would love to do missions work out of the country,” Lucas said. Despite the different routes seniors take after college, they all expressed gratitude toward their time at the university.

From 2018-2022: A transformed campus

Elkstone Hall, formerly known as Lovill Hall, seen March 28, 2022. The buildings name was changed in Summer/Fall of 2020 after a university vote due to Edward Lovill’s racist background. Aldo Sarabia Cameron Stuart | Associate News Editor Since the class of 2022 began their freshman year in 2018, campus has experienced demolished and newly built residence halls, renovated academic buildings and a revamped football stadium. These campus changes are part of the campus Master Plan 2025, a “guide for the physical development of campus,” according to the university’s website. The board of trustees finalized and approved the 192-page living document in April 2017, and it includes over 40 individual projects. Part of the Master Plan 2025 is the P3 Project, a public-private partnership with real-estate company RISE, made up of three stages of construction taking place from 2019

to 2022. 2018-19 Academic Year Off the university’s main campus, the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences renovation finished at the start of the academic year, with a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 21, 2018. This was the largest capital project in campus history. The first phase of the P3 project began mid-February 2019. Construction began for a new parking deck on the west side of campus, next to Eggers Hall. The parking deck was not finished that academic year, and it impacted parking for students near the site. The parking deck replaced Winkler Hall, a residence hall demolished in 2014.

At the end of the semester and beginning of the summer, the surface Stadium Parking Lot was fenced off as new construction projects of resident halls and a new green space began. 2019-20 Academic Year Students returned to campus with new and old construction projects in fall 2019, including construction of residence halls Thunder Hill and Raven Rocks. The Stadium Parking Deck officially opened Aug. 14, 2019, providing 477 new parking spots on campus. Construction for the $43 million Kidd Brewer Stadium North End Zone project began September 2019. “We’re going through the process of bidding right now, as well as the initial part of construction,” said

Jeff Pierce, director of Planning, Design and Construction, in the campus construction update podcast episode Sept. 30, 2019. Sanford Hall was heavily renovated throughout summer and fall 2019 as part of an $18 million renovation project. Pierce said the renovation would repair old elevators in the building, improve air conditioning efficiency and modernize common areas. In the same podcast, Dave Blanks, production assistant and audio engineer for University Communications, said over $300 million of construction was taking place that semester. In a campus construction update Feb. 24, 2020, Blanks announced the

official names of the four new residence halls: Thunder Hill, Raven Rocks, Laurel Creek and New River halls. Laurel Creek Hall construction began the same month. Campus construction continued through the start of the pandemic in 2020. University Communications could not be reached for comment at the time of publication on how the pandemic impacted construction project timelines and costs. Over the summer, Hoey and Lovill halls were stripped of their original names June 29, 2020 due to the racist histories behind their names. Demolition of Justice Hall began the same summer in July, the second in a series of seven residence hall demolitions scheduled between 2014 and 2022. 2020-21 Academic Year Students moved into the finished Thunder Hill and Raven Rocks halls at the start of the fall semester, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony following a few weeks later Sept. 3, 2020. These residence halls are located in place of the previous Stadium Parking Lot. Though not entirely completed, the first phase of the North End Zone of Kidd Brewer Stadium, which included the fourth-floor Grandview Ballroom, balcony seats and first-floor lobby, opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 13, 2020 in time for the Nov. 14 Georgia State football game. Phase I of the P3 project was completed with the building of Thunder Hill and Raven Rocks halls and the Stadium Parking Deck. Phases II and III, both in progress during the fall 2020 semester, included building Laurel Creek and New River halls and the Peacock Parking Garage. New River Hall construction began at the end of the fall semester on top of the recently demolished Justice Hall. The same semester, the Career Development Center began the process of moving from the JET building to the student union in place of the

April 14, 2022 Whitewater Lounge. At the start of the spring semester Jan. 11, 2021, Chancellor Sheri Everts announced the new names for Hoey and Lovill halls, Dogwood Hall and Elkstone Hall, respectively. Sanford Hall’s renovation was nearly completed in the spring, with the university administration and the board of trustees celebrating the reopening March 25, 2021. The second phase of the football North End Zone building encompassed first and second floors and finished in the spring, with athletics staff moving into the building in May. Some of the finished amenities included a locker room, store, various training and treatment rooms and a Hall of Fame collection. In a campus construction update June 7, Matt Dull, associate vice chancellor for Finance and Operations, said Gardner and Coltrane halls were prepared for demolition by removing furniture, useful technologies such as Wi-Fi routers and hazardous materials not fit for landfills from the buildings. 2021-22 Academic Year Several projects completed around the start of the fall semester, including Laurel Creek Hall, the Career Development Center relocation and an off-campus transfer hall. Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony July 30, Laurel Creek Hall and its 14,400 ft. courtyard opened to a new class of students on move-in day, completing phase II of the P3 project. The Career Development Center was officially relocated from the JET building to the second floor of the student union the week of Aug. 30. The previous Panhellenic Hall, located on Blowing Rock Road, was transformed into Mountain Laurel Hall, the transfer hall for the 2021-22 school year. In other off-campus updates, Everts announced a future App State campus in Hickory in mid-November. Demolition of Gardner and Coltrane halls finished early in the fall semester, with plans to replace the buildings with surface parking. Students, faculty and App State

fans noticed an incomplete football stadium for the 2020 season, but experienced football games again with a renovated stadium. The third and final phase of the North End Zone was completed in early November with the third floor, which included a reception area, exam rooms and a gym. New River Hall is still under construction. Future Steps Eggers and Boey halls are scheduled for demolition this summer, one of the last steps in the Residential Village project. New River Hall is on track to be completed in time for students to move in for the fall semester 2022. The completed residence hall projects will replace 1,800 beds and add 500 more, while also adding more parking spaces. University Communications could not be reached for comment on

changes to parking prices following the increase in spots. The university’s Appalachian 105 property is scheduled for a com-

plete transformation into a track and field competition and practice area by summer 2022. Wey Hall, home to the Depart-

ment of Art, will be renovated for the first time since its opening in 1976. The project is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.

Success and opportunity: Why graduate students stay Andrew Rice | Reporter As of August 2020, graduate students at the university numbered 1,962 of 20,023 enrolled students or 9% of the overall student population, according to a report from Appalachian Today. According to the university website, there are more than 80 graduate degrees offered at the university. Degrees can range from programs of study like student affairs to pollinator health in the Department of Biology. Grad student Lacey Ballard is completing her second year of her master’s in student affairs administration after completing her undergraduate degree at East Carolina University. She plans to return to ECU and work as an administrator for Student Affairs after graduating in May. “ECU does not offer the pro-

gram or assistantship that I am doing,” Ballard said. “So I have really good benefits, and this is just a better spot for me.” Ballard participates in an assistantship with University Housing, where she is the resident director of White Hall. Ballard said she has taken on more responsibilities at the university than she would have in other programs. “To be a graduate assistant at ECU is just to be an RA with a few extra steps,” Ballard said. “Whereas here, you get to be the residence director.” Ballard feels the program’s cohort style has helped her meet fellow student affairs graduate students. “You get to know everyone in your program at least on a base lev-

el,” Ballard said. “And it just makes it easier to engage with your class because you’re taking every class with the same group of people.” Increasing student accessibility with the housing department is something the university can improve, Ballard said. “If I wasn’t a housing grad and didn’t have housing, it would be tough for me,” Ballard said. However, Ballard believes the assistantship experience will help her stick out in her field of study. “Now, when I’m applying for jobs, I can say that I have two years of residence hall supervising experience,” Ballard said. Matthew Johnson graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology and is currently studying pollinator health as a grad student. Johnson is working on a project studying viruses among honeybees that infect native species. Maryam Ahmed is a professor and chair member in the Department of Biology and helps students like Johnson get connected with research they are passionate about. Ahmed is studying how cancer cells and immune cells respond to particular viruses by increasing efficiency in development of certain viral treatments. “I previously helped Dr. Ahmed with a project that she was doing while in undergrad,” Johnson said. “So I tried to tailor my current project to some of the virology work that she was already doing.” Johnson is completing his first year as a grad student and is a teaching assistant for introductory biology courses in order to fund his studies. “The biology grad professors fight for funding as best they can,” Johnson said. “But sometimes it can be difficult to get.” Johnson said he has a close relationship with many professors he works with and feels he has made valuable connections with them. “The bio professors are insanely

Resident director and graduate student Dalton Stroup poses for a portrait March 28, 2022. Sam Byrd good at what they do,” Johnson said. “They have to juggle so much, and I truly believe that they do everything with grace and are always willing to help me with the work I am doing.” Dalton Stroup graduated from the university in May with a degree in business administration in hospitality and tourism management. He is also pursuing his master’s degree in student affairs administration. Stroup had many reasons for choosing App State when pursuing his master’s like proximity to family and cost. However, he said COVID-19 was his biggest concern. “Being sent home my junior year, having a nearly completely virtual senior year, I felt like App still

had plenty of things to teach me and ways to help me grow,” Stroup said. Stroup is a resident director for Bowie Hall, fulfilling his requirement for an assistantship as a grad student studying student affairs and administration. “I have been able to grow exponentially as a supervisor, advisor and person as well as learn from amazing staff members and undergraduate students,” Stroup said. Despite the growth he has experienced, Stroup wants to see a greater focus on students’ holistic health and development. Read more at www.theappalachianonline.com

Legacies and alumni share college memories

Emily Milano | Reporter Some students have a better inside look at App State life than most students get with a campus tour — they have their parents. Reece Kennedy, a senior marketing major, looked forward to sharing experiences with his parents after choosing a college. “My decision to come to App State was my own decision, but I knew me and my parents would share some cool experiences if I came to App State,” Kennedy said. James Gatlin, a freshman exercise science major, felt most connected to the university when making his

college decision. “App State felt the most comfortable out of all of the schools that had my major. Having my mom go here meant I already had some connections and the area itself was familiar,” Gatlin said. Owen Giljames, a sophomore business management major, said being a legacy influenced his decision to attend the mountain town school. “App State was always on the list of colleges that I was gonna consider going to because my parents both went here. They’d also bring me up to the Boone area to hike or fish, so

those benefits of being a student here heavily influenced my decision,” Giljames said. Kennedy and his mother, Carey Kennedy, class of 1993, both enjoyed cheering on the Mountaineers as students at football games and while tailgating. “It has been a lot of fun having me and my friends at tailgates with my parents and their college friends. It’s been a cool colliding of worlds,” Reece Kennedy said. Carey Kennedy said her favorite memories from college were football tailgates and games. “It was so much fun to have everybody get together before the games,” Carey Kennedy said. Owen Giljames’ parents, Julie Giljames, class of 1993 and Steve Giljames, class of 1999, said the campus has changed a lot. The university built the Summit Trail Solarium in 2004 and demolished old residence halls, according to Appalachian Today. App State also started construction in 2019 on new dorms on the west side of campus. Along with university changes, Boone experienced its own renovations. Murphy’s became Ransom Cafe and Pub and Klondike Cafe changed to TApp Room in 2017. Technology has also altered the way students learn and interact with each other. Now, students use cell phones to connect with each other, and most textbooks and assignments are online as the university began using ASULearn in 2007. “Student life was obviously less digital when I was a student with more one-on-one interaction,” said Stephen Plantone, class of 1989. While student life is more digital, students still find themselves studying in the same spots their parents did. “The most popular study spots on campus were Sanford Mall and the rooms in the library,” said Anna Craig Gatlin, James Gatlin’s mother and class of 1995. I know I will cherish these people for a long time,” Lexi Plantone said. Like his daughter, Stephen Plantone said the university changed his life by offering new perspectives through his college years.

“My App State experience changed me as I set out on my own for the first time in my life. I worked my way through my education in order to attain my degree. The experience matured me by helping create the work ethic that I have today,” Stephen Plantone said.

Seniors leave local businesses

Andrew Rice | Reporter

After taking their last final exams, finishing up internships and moving out of apartments, seniors not only leave Boone, but they also depart from jobs at local businesses. Every year businesses lose employees because of graduation, causing a change in operation. Anna Banana’s, Macado’s, Lost Province Brewery Co. and other local businesses all employ seniors who are about to graduate or recently graduated. Macado’s employee Nirali McColgin said they have many senior employees who are about to leave. She said it will be hard to see some go because they are great workers. “We’ll be very short staffed. People have to understand that there is only so much we can do,” said McColgin, a sophomore hospitality and tourism management major. Madison Taylor, a senior employee at Macado’s who has worked there for over a year, said she plans to leave Boone after graduation. “I really appreciate this place because I’m able to work events here and meet a lot of people as well,” said Taylor, a public relations major. “I think I’m definitely going to miss the people at Macado’s and then definitely Boone as well.” Anna Banana’s manager Ali Aita said they attempt to hire new employees prior to seniors graduating. Because summertime in Boone attracts tourists, Aita said Anna Banana’s searches for people that can work during the summer. However, they still try to hire underclassmen, especially freshmen, because they will stick around longer. Aita said this “makes it easier in the long run.” “It definitely makes things difficult because then you have to retrain people,” said Caleb Baleanu, Anna Banana’s employee. “We’ve seen so many cycles of people coming and going.” Dan’l Boone Inn employee of

three and a half years Matthew Hodnett said they experience the most difficulty in the fall due to a lack of trained employees. He said when seniors leave, most of the employees left working aren’t very experienced, and they have to train the newer employees. Hodnett said most employees usually stay for their entire four years gaining experience, and the quality of people working there “definitely goes down,” when seniors leave. Appalachian Tees Inc. employee Madison Cansler said their busiest time of the year is football season because it’s “like a Black Friday.” She

worries when new people get hired, especially during the fall, the more experienced employees will have to multitask between helping train the new hires and tending to their own work. “If they don’t have retail experience, then it’s going to be hard for the people who’ve been working here to try and, like, step out and help them and keep doing what they’re doing,” said Cansler, a sophomore apparel design and merchandising major. Although leaving seniors can affect businesses by causing them to lose employees, My Phó of Boone employee Taylor Jones said they don’t think employees leaving is much of an issue

for them. Instead, she believes revenue will be impacted more. Jones said when graduation season hits, they get more customers because of people visiting for the commencement ceremonies. However, when graduation season is over and everyone leaves, she said business can be “dead.” “I actually think that we’ll be okay in terms of, like, the piece of business that is, like, maintaining employees and stuff,” said Jones, a sophomore journalism major. Cole Britt, a senior employee at Blue Cross Blue Shield, an insurance company, said they have already

started the application process for new employees. He said working at a Boone business has been “amazing” and helpful, and it’s given him a lot of experience and prepared him for his future. Britt, who has worked there for 10 months, said leaving the job will be “bittersweet.” “I wish I could stay there just because everybody’s really cool, and I really like the job, but it’s not like when we leave it’s going to be over,” said Britt, a computer information systems major. “There’s going to be other students who can kind of come through the process just like I did.”

ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE BOONE BANDS TALK POST-GRADUATION

Class of

2022 Graphic by Efrain Arias-Medina Jr. Jaclyn Bartlett | Reporter As May nears, students prepare to leave college life behind. These Boone bands, however, plan to pursue their musical passions after leaving the university. Senior digital marketing major Brendan Grove plays guitar for the psychedelic rock band RUGG. Grove and another RUGG guitar player, Brandon Mangano, met in high school and formed the band after they moved to Boone. Drummer Carolyn Brecht joined later. Grove is the only App State student in the band. Grove began playing guitar when he was eight and said he’s had a passion for music since. “Being able to take my own music or, like, take someone else’s music and perform that and use a language that I feel like everyone kind of understands is just insanely rewarding, and I just love that,” Grove said. After Grove graduates in May, RUGG is going on a five-day tour, in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. They also plan on moving to Asheville in July in search of opportunities for their band and job opportunities outside the band.

MUSIC IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE IN MY LIFE. IT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE A PART OF WHAT I DO. NO MATTER WHERE I END UP AFTER SCHOOL, I'M DEFINITELY GONNA KEEP IT AROUND.

“I want it to be about the music, not just about the money,” Grove said. Grove is pursuing a career in marketing in the music industry. He said being in RUGG helped him gain experience and find enjoyment in social media management, and he hopes the experience will allow him to do similar creative marketing ventures. As for their band, they are working on new music, and Grove said they hope to continue playing together for as long as they can. “We’ve got a lot of music in the bank, and we’re working on an album now, so we’re pretty excited about it, and hopefully, we can start kind of linking up with other groups that are kind of like-minded with us and start going on runs and make as much as we can out of it,” Grove said. Carter Hodl, a senior advertising major, plays bass for the ‘jam band’ Jacoozy. They started playing together last spring. “I mean, we kind of centralize around the jam idea,” Hodl said. “That’s what we really like to do is just kind of have a lot of long-form songs that run into each other. We like leaving a lot of space for ourselves to just execute our creative ideas the way that we want to.” Hodl started playing bass in October 2020, but music has been a part of his life from an early age. He started piano lessons around age seven. In fourth grade, he began playing percussion and eventually joined his high school jazz band. He started playing guitar his sophomore year of high school and has stuck with it ever since. Hodl said as of right now, Jacoozy plans on playing together for as long as possible. If any opportunities arise, they will put a hold on job offers, but Hodl’s main focus is looking for jobs after college. “I really do want to focus on music, but I also know that I need a contingency plan if that fails. I know how hard it is to get into that scene,” Hodl said. “Music is always going to be in my life. It’s always going to be a part of what I do. No matter where I end up after school, I’m definitely gonna keep it around.” If they do not continue with the band, Hodl said he may keep pursuing his passion for music through a career in advertising. Hodl said he wants to eventually work in creative directing. He plans to get into music advertising, designing promotional materials like concert posters and album covers. Naomi Poesel, the lead guitarist for Babe Haven, an all-girl queer punk band, graduated from App State last spring with a major in exercise science and a minor in sociology. She works as a behavioral technician helping kids with autism while playing in the band. The band formed last summer for the annual Boone in Blossom festival. Even though the event was canceled due to COVID-19, they continued playing together after Poesel’s graduation. Read more online at www.theappalachianonline.com

BUSINESS CASUAL FOR GRADS Xanayra Marin-Lopez | Visual Managing Editor Looking past graduation and onto job interviews, your new internship’s dress code and any future professional setting, you don’t have to compensate your style for your career. If you’re going for best dressed in the office, here are three tips to master the business casual look as a fresh graduate. INVEST IN EVERYDAY BASICS To build your business wardrobe from scratch, you’ve got to go back to the basics. Here are some staples to curate a closet anyone can wear. First, a black blazer and dress pants set. These can be bought separately, but they’re the most basic business wear you’ll need. Once you have these, you can play with shirts underneath and colorful shoes, but they’re good pieces to build the rest of your outfits. On top, be sure to have basic colored blouses or polos on deck. These are best in colors like white, navy blue and gray. These tops pair great with slacks or minimal patterned pants and can go under a blazer. Some safe prints are plaid, checkers or gingham. The same goes for skirts. For both pencil skirts and shorter skirts, sticking to basic colors and

patterns will make it easier to get dressed in the mornings. For dresses, some options you’ll want to keep close are a classic sweater dress and any mid-length, full coverage dress. Dresses are easy to wear because they don’t require much styling besides shoes and accessories. ACCESSORIES AREN’T UNPROFESSIONAL Jewelry may seem distracting to certain employers, but there’s no need to tone your look down for a boss. A long statement necklace pairs best with a simple top. Instead of a necklace, you could go for a set of bangles, a watch or a cuff as your statement piece. It’s best to choose one statement piece against the rest of your outfit. A claw clip to keep your hair up and your bangs to the side is a modern take at the professional updo. If your clip matches a color on your outfit, you’re one step closer to looking put together. Nowadays, there’s plenty of claw clip designs to choose from other than the original pronged one. Being behind a desk or a computer can be straining for multiple days a week, so investing in a pair of blue light glasses is not only smart for your eyes but also offers a more professional and studious look. YOU DON’T HAVE TO WEAR HEELS EVERYDAY

Don’t limit yourself to thinking heels are required at work. There’s plenty of other options for footwear that don’t have the potential to be painful. Slip-on shoes can still be appropriate for work. Chain embellished black loafers are simple yet classy for their price point. If you’re wearing these, make sure your jewelry is also the same shade of gold. A pointy-toe is a modern take on flats, which have always seemed to be the only other business casual option next to heels. While you’re still laying low, add a strap to an otherwise thin shoe for a different shoe with more coverage. If you’re still looking for some elevation, there’s more comfortable business shoes with some length. Some white chunky loafers would look best with ankle socks and patterned pants. A squared heel will still have you feeling closer to the ground and is easier to walk in. By collecting just a few pieces off this list, you’re set for the first important moments of adult life. Be sure to dress appropriately for the occasion, and don’t be afraid to let your personal style shine through on the job.

HOW TO STYLE YOUR CAP Xanayra Marin-Lopez | Visual Managing Editor Get ready to turn the tassel. You’ve got your shoes, graduation gown and what you’re wearing underneath. Like many graduates before, you can also choose to decorate the top of your cap personal to you. Let’s make sure your design is unique — that way you’ll be able to find it after you toss it in the air. Styling your cap is a chance to be proud of any organization that meant a lot to you during college, represent your heritage, display a quote with a special meaning and more. Start by picking a theme for your cap. It doesn’t have to be too clear cut, but consider these questions when deciding what to base your design on: • What are your career aspirations? • What is your favorite aspect of your major? • What motivated you while earning your degree? • Do you want your cap to be funny or serious? After deciding your theme or a collection of

interests to display on your cap, you’ll need several craft items depending on your design, including but not limited to: • Scrapbook paper. • Hot glue gun, scissors, tape, exacto knife. • Stickers (Letters, specific designs, etc). • Scrapbook embellishments (Paper flowers, rhinestones, sequins, buttons, etc). • Glitter. • Stamps and ink Once you have all you need, it’s time to start your design. To preserve your cap, start with a scrapbook paper base. Choose your paper, and face the cap downward on the paper with the stretchy band facing up. Trace the shape on the side of the paper without a design and cut it out for the perfect match. You’ll need to make sure the circle button at the top of the cap will be visible with your design and be ready for a tassel. Take the paper piece you just cut out and hold it down on the top of

your cap. Feel for where the button is, and do your best to draw a circle that matches. Holding the paper slightly in half, make a small cut with the tip of your scissors in the middle of the circle you just drew. Once that incision has been made, you can use more of the scissor blade to cut out the circle perfectly. Don’t worry if you mess up at first. Make sure you have enough copies of your favorite paper to be able to make mistakes. You can now tape the four corners of the cap-sized paper to your cap. Painter’s tape, washi tape or any kind of secure tape that won’t leave damage is best. With your background paper on your cap,

you are free to design it however you’d like with any of the extra embellishments you purchased. It’s best to make a sketch of your design to base your cap off of before going in. If you aren’t the craftiest person, there are also premade options for your cap. There’s a great selection of graduation cap toppers on Etsy, including this Megan Thee Stallion-themed topper and one customizable to your heritage. With your cap to your liking, you’re ready for the big day. You should know exactly how you’ll be wearing your cap so the design is legible in the direction you choose. Also, make sure you’re planning for the tassel to be able to move freely in your design. Be sure to take plenty of pictures.

‘ABOUT THE FIGHT’ ONE MOUNTAINEER’S LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS Alex McCaskey | Reporter After five seasons of college basketball and three seasons with the Mountaineers, one player leaves a legacy, emerging as a team leader and nominee for many accolades. Fifth-year senior forward Michaela Porter began playing basketball when she was in elementary school. Her start in basketball came with the developmental league her father ran on Mondays and Wednesdays, but prior to playing basketball, she competed in cheerleading and other sports. Porter has been a Mountaineer for the past three seasons and just completed her fifth season of college basketball after the NCAA granted student athletes a year of eligibility in response to the pandemic. Before transferring to App State, she attended The University of Cincinnati for two years. While looking at schools to transfer to, she received a call from assistant coach Sam Pierce Jr., who previously recruited her in high school. “Once he called, and I came up on a visit, I just felt very comfortable at App,” Porter said. In the 2019-20 season, Porter’s first with the program, she scored 119 points, with a season-high of 17 coming against the University of Louisiana Monroe Feb. 29, 2020. She also led the team in bench scoring, contributing 5.1 points per game in conference games. In her second season with the team, she doubled her points per game average from 4.1 to 8.7 and swiped 53 steals on the season, which led the team. Porter was nominated for the Sun Belt Defensive Play-

er of the Year in the 2020-2021 season. As a fifth-year senior, Porter averaged 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 37% from the floor. She also led the team in steals with 61 and was second on the team in rebounds with 166. “App women’s basketball is about the fight. We are going to play hard. We’re going to fight the whole game, and we’re never going to give up,” Porter said. Porter has many best moments from her time at App State, both on and off the court. She said some of her favorite memories were meeting donors and fans in the student section. Porter also said she enjoyed visiting one of the waterfalls around Boone. “I feel like those are a few of my best memories, just meeting the people who support us,” Porter said. In her time with the program, Porter has emerged as a leader on the team. She credits the leaders who helped her during her time at App State and said she wants to invest in younger players on the team, whether answering questions during the game or being available if a teammate calls. “She is very much our leader and our heartbeat of our team,” said head coach Angel Elderkin. In three years with the Mountaineers, Porter played in 84 games while starting 55. Porter scored 706 points, grabbed 434 rebounds and dished out 104 assists and was nominated for the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year once. “I had great leaders along the way, so I just wanted to give back and pay it forward to those who are next up,” Porter said.

APP STATE FOOTBALL VIDEOGRAPHER BUILDS LEGACY

THROUGH BRAND

Cameron Burnett | Associate Sports Editor One football videographer has created content since becoming a student at App State. On the big screen in Kidd Brewer Stadium, the hype videos before games have become synonymous with that Mountaineer. Max Renfro, a senior marketing major, came to App State with an interest in working with the football video team and turned it into his passion. The evolution of his work has coincided with the team itself. While App State football’s success on the field has garnered attention over the last few years, the work behind the scenes has received national recognition as well. When the team earned headlines for scoring touchdowns, Mountaineer football’s content team earned headlines for unique uniform reveals and documenting scenic views advertising Boone. Renfro spearheaded the content team for App State football, but there was a time when the school wasn’t his first choice. When he was a senior in high school, Renfro made the last second decision to attend App State. Renfro spent time in high school as a photographer and found a passion for documenting his scenery, then heard about the video team for Mountaineer football. During his freshman year in 2018, Renfro joined the video team. His impact was felt quickly as he took over as student director of video production in the spring. “It’s been the greatest decision ever to come here and start creating videos. I feel like every day, I appreciate it more and more,” Renfro said. “My high school didn’t even have a football team, so I had no clue I would be filming football a few years later.” As the leader of the team, Renfro won four College Sports Video Association SAVVY awards from 2018-20, but his viral breakthrough came right before the 2020 season. A uniform reveal video led by Renfro featuring Thomas Hennigan rising from the water of Laurel Creek Falls garnered national attention from multiple outlets. ESPN and Barstool Sports posted the video, now exceeding 10 million views on TikTok alone. The development of App State’s social media following was a microcosm of Renfro’s ascension as a content creator. The Hennigan uniform reveal caught the most attention on the App State football TikTok account. “The algorithm that TikTok has, anyone can go viral, so it’s just a reminder to always post your work. You never know who’s on the other end watching, so it’s an easy way to grow,” Renfro said. The account now has 228,000 followers, the fourth most of any college football program. Throughout the last four seasons, Renfro has thought of ideas for every week of the season, garnering excitement from fans each week as they await the video’s release on social media. From a “Stranger Things” inspired Halloween uniform reveal to players running in the snow to returning the helmet stripe with College Football Hall of Fame coach Jerry Moore as the star of a video, Renf-

Senior football videographer Max Renfro holds his camera for a portrait at Kidd Brewer Stadium March 27, 2022. Max Correa ro’s creativity built a following comparable to any Power-5 program. In this process, Renfro developed a program of student content creators with the team, including sophomore Will Allen and senior Andrei Paras. As the experienced creator, Renfro recruited Allen to shoot App State video and met with him during his visit at the school. “Without Max, I wouldn’t be where I am at right now. If that meeting had never happened, who knew if I would be shooting App State football,” Allen said. Coming into this academic year, Renfro initially decided to step down from his role as the content lead for App State football. As a senior, he faced the pressure of a final year of college classes on top of the freelance work he does beyond

shooting athletics. This culminated in Allen taking over the role, but before the football season started, Renfro couldn’t stay away too long before returning. Renfro reached out to Allen before the season to express his interest in returning to the team. Allen was ecstatic to have one of his mentors back creating content for one more year. “Max did not have to do that. It was out of the kindness of his heart to come back and help me when he’s in the most stressful year of his life. If that doesn’t tell you what kind of guy he is, I don’t know what will,” Allen said. Read more online at www.theappalachianonline.com

SENIOR GUARD GRADUATES AFTER HISTORIC CAREER Dan Davidson | Sports Editor After serving as the face of the App State basketball program for five years, one senior guard prepares for life after college. “It’s been great being a focal point on this team. It’s been an honor,” said senior guard Justin Forrest. “It’s been a fun experience and one I’ll never forget.” Growing up in Decatur, Georgia, Forrest was raised by James and Sonia Forrest. An intense work ethic and unwillingness to be complacent was instilled in Forrest at an early age by his father, who earned All-ACC first team in 1994 at

Georgia Tech. “He’s always been a hard worker. He’s always the underdog,” James Forrest said. “I kept him away from all of the hoopla … and just made sure he was fine-tuned to go to college and make a difference.” James Forrest played professional basketball overseas during the early stages of his son’s life. He and his wife had to rely on others at times to help raise their son, including James’ best friend Marcus Woods. “I was still playing professional over in Europe, and he started getting him in the gym at

four,” James Forrest said. “I’ll never forget, I was in Treviso, Italy, about to play a game when my best friend called me, and he said ‘Hey man, I just wanted to tell you something. He played his first game. We got us one.’” Justin Forrest played on his high school basketball team at Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy, where he won back-to-back Class A-Private Boys State Championships as a junior and senior. In the 2017 championship, Forrest dropped 36 points en route to a 24-point win over Southwest Atlanta Christian. Outside of high school basketball, Forrest played for his father’s Amateur Athletic Union squad, Team Forrest. James Forrest established Team Forrest in 2010 out of a desire to coach his son. However, James Forrest quickly learned that simultaneously being a coach and father brought its own challenges. “A lot of times, he thought I hated him,” James Forrest said. “There were moments where we would play games, and we may win a game, and I may still be pissed, and he would be like ‘Why is he still not happy?’ But the beautiful thing about it, he understood what I was saying, so by the time he got up to Boone, nothing could faze him.” Forrest made an immediate impact after arriving at App State, playing in all 33 games his freshman year, 27 of which he started. Forrest led the team in steals with 42 while scoring 13.5

points per game, good for second on the 2017-18 team. The highlight of his freshman year came Nov. 22, 2017, against James Madison, where Forrest poured in 36 points, four assists and two steals. Forrest continued to improve as a sophomore and junior, increasing his points per game average to 16.2 and 17.3, respectively. Forrest also increased his assist per game average in both years as the Mountaineers began to win more. Through Forrest’s first two years, the Black and Gold finished a combined 26-39. However, the team improved to a winning record in Forrest’s junior year, finishing 18-15. Read more online at www.theappalachianonline.com

THAT WAS THE ONE THING WE WANTED TO FOCUS ON IS MAKE SURE WE WENT SOMEWHERE WHERE WE CAN ACTUALLY HELP CHANGE THEIR PROGRAM...

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, My name is Cody Bond and I am a first generation college student. The past five years at App have been nothing short of amazing and I am thankful for the opportunities that I have had and will have later down the road. I have had my share of ups and downs over those five years, but I would not trade the lessons learned for anything. Being the first college graduate in my family came with the first for tons of things like leaving home and the supervision of my parents on a daily basis. I learned quickly that I had to grow up and mature on my own being so far from home and doing

college athletics as well. Balancing my time became something I had to learn because I had school, wrestling, and personal life to balance, which was something that I was not used to. I guess the most important lesson I learned as a first generation college student is that time management and study skills can make or break you. Like I stated, the past five years have taught me a lot of lessons that you just do not learn without this experience, and if I could go back and do it all over again, I would do so and not change anything because I am proud of the person that I have become.

Thank you, Cody Bond

This is my hardest goodbye Emily Broyles | Editor-in-Chief

Max Correa

This is the last article I’ll ever write for The Appalachian. And this is my hardest goodbye. I’ve joked all year to my friends about my farewell, how I would expose truths that reside in Room 217’s Google Docs, the hard-to-work-with counterparts, the condescending emails I’ve woken up to, the struggles. But that’s stupid. Those things didn’t shape me — The Appalachian did. When I signed up to be a news reporter the third week of my freshman year, I didn’t realize I signed up for a duty to serve this community. But I am so glad I did. I’ve written about a lot here: the parking deck that didn’t let me sleep, the Greek life conflicts, the impact marginalized voices have on this PWI, the historic COVID-19 vaccine and so much more. Roughly 125 articles later, I stopped writing as much as editor-in-chief. I don’t regret it. I stepped into the role wideeyed and proud of a two-year long dream coming true. I’m so happy that dream has come to a remarkable end. Thank you to my staff and iconic adviser, Allison Dyche, for supporting me as the first person, woman of color and Latina editor-in-chief. To everyone who acknowledged this, thank

you. I will not be the last. I write this with a burning nose and stomach butterflies, as I realize I have less than a month left in my little Princess and the Frog (thank you Erin), newspaper-tacked office that’s always filled with people like Xanayra Marin-Lopez, Ansley Puckett, Gabrielle Troutman, Jackie Park, Jake Markland and many more. To my ed-board: You kicked a--. Thanks for putting up with me. We made history. I have no idea what my farewell theme is. It’s goodbye, it’s thank you, it’s support student journalists at The Appalachian and everywhere, it’s cherish the community you make here, it’s slow down, it’s be kind, it’s we did it. It’s don’t underestimate the power of student journalism and the people it creates. To the bestest friends I’ve cried to since 2018, my loving SGA president boyfriend who was my favorite conflict of interest, my amazing mom and sister: thank you so much for your patience and little pushes. I love you. And to The Appalachian’s staff, editors, alumni and readers, thank you. This is my hardest goodbye.

Thank you for the memories Jessica Kimes | Business Manager

Max Correa

It used to be a goal of mine to write at least one thing for the paper. Well here it is. I’ve designed a handful of ads in the paper and see my name in it every month, but there’s something special about being able to write my thoughts and see it printed on thousands of copies. Haha. Even this. As many people know, I do a lot of things. I love to gain experiences, so it’s a challenge for me to turn cool opportunities down. This is how I ended up having three jobs, holding leadership roles in three organizations and filling all of the spaces in between hanging out with friends, painting pretty sunsets and picking the banjo. Some people wonder how I do it. This is where I want to give all credit to God. He’s given me the strength and encouragement to get through each day with joy in my heart and a smile on my face.

Being Business Manager of The Appalachian has given me experiences I never would have imagined I could gain as a college student. I remember thinking when I first joined as an account executive that the business manager at the time was so scary and official. It’s crazy to think that I’m now in his place. It’s really easy to get caught up in doing things that look good on paper, but I’ve loved having fun in the in between. Waking up in the morning to watch the sunrise. Throwing myself down a mountain in an activity they call snowboarding. Jumping off rocks into freezing rivers (but only when my friends did it first). My time at App State has been amazing, and I’m so thankful for the people in my life who have supported me along the way.

Potatoes, fires and goodbyes Ansley Puckett | Managing Editor

Max Correa

Saying goodbye to something you’ve loved for three years is really weird, and I’m not sure who I would be without The Appalachian. From covering a fire in my own dorm using my phone to having a conversation with the chancellor about her favorite kind of potato, The Appalachian has made me a more confident and capable person and allowed me to meet people I never would have known. Not only has The Appalachian changed me, but I know it has also changed campus. The work this paper does is so important, and The Appalachian is truly the most essential student organization at App State. I joined The Appalachian after changing my major to journalism and finally found an outlet for my nosiness and interest in other people’s business. Starting as a news reporter, I learned how much goes on behind the scenes on campus and what’s hidden from students and community members. My time on the news desk made me more assertive and confident as well as started a college-long theme of me knowing all the tea in Boone. When I became Arts & Culture Editor, I learned how to cover Boone trends and human interest and even wrote a hard-hitting piece on Squishmallows. Leading the Arts &

Culture desk was the most rewarding experience, and I will always love that desk for bringing my passion back for reporting. Now, as a senior finishing my student journalism career as Managing Editor, I’ve had the privilege of helping lead an amazing team of editors and reporters on the paper. I will always support and cherish the team of journalists I worked with during my time as Managing Editor. Special shoutout to my administration ladies. The job would not have been as fun without you. If I can leave on any note, it would be to support student journalism. Be a student journalist. Help student journalists. Answer student journalists’ emails. There’s more happening on campus than students will ever know, and student journalism plays a large role in holding groups accountable and revealing important information. To my friends and family, thank you for supporting me even when I dropped everything to write or edit a story in the middle of dinner on a Friday night. You are everything to me. Finally, to The Appalachian and everyone I’ve worked with over the past three years, thank you.

A letter to the staff of color Xanayra Marin-Lopez | Visual Managing Editor

Max Correa

I entered The Appalachian newsroom in 2019 as an eager and overachieving freshman who made my then boyfriend come with me and act like he was interested because I was nervous. I’m now leaving with too many clips to count, lifelong friendships and two pages of a resume. I also entered The Appalachian newsroom as a Latina from a hardworking family who taught me to go after what I wanted. I understood there was an unequal opportunity where I came from and that there would always be for people like me. I knew that I had to work five times as hard to reach the places and positions white students were already at. I was the person who showed up to anchor auditions in a freshly dorm-room-ironed dress, my high school homecoming heels and bone-straight heated hair with a printed resume in hand. After sitting on the sidelines for a few weeks, ultimately, that’s what got me the permanent job anchoring The Appalachian Weekly News as their first pick the day someone got sick. And only in my first semester.

That’s also why I’m graduating early. There’s something to be said for the overachieving mindset of those who have to start from ground zero and make something of themselves. I always felt like I was in a position where I had no time to waste, for better or for worse. To my people of color, to my fellow members of the Latinx community, to my Boricua’s: there aren’t always going to be people rooting for you in the beginning, or ever, maybe, until you do something they can benefit from. To my journalists of color and to my Latinx journalists, don’t let anyone stop you from telling the stories you grew up living in. You have the ability to turn this newsroom around, and I hate that we feel like it’s our responsibility to do so. We already know what’s highly expected of us compared to others, but set your own standards for how you want to live your life. I completely understand the pressure you feel of having to bring home an accolade or announcement to impress our hard-to-please families. But the only person you need to be better for is the person you were yesterday.

Get in loser, we’re graduating Lily Kincaid | Associate A&C Editor I never know what to say when it comes to stuff like this, but I figured I’d try. I transferred to App State in summer 2020, so as you can probably guess, it wasn’t easy for me to make friends up here. I barely knew my professors, let alone my classmates, and it was exhausting. But then, just a few months later, I joined a Zoom call and went to The Appalachian’s last meeting of the fall semester. I didn’t realize it then, but that would be my first Thursday night meeting of many. I also didn’t realize, somehow, that joining the newspaper was just what I needed. I went to that first meeting hoping that eventually, I would get some experience and maybe some cool pieces for my portfolio, and don’t get me wrong, I’ve got-

ten both of those things. But what I didn’t expect to find — and, in my opinion, what’s just as important — was a sweet little family tucked inside the student union. Everyone says it, but it’s true — graduating is going to be very bittersweet. I’m so sad to be leaving behind The Appalachian and all of the wonderful people in the newsroom, but I’m also excited to see the growth that’s to come, for both myself and for the newspaper. Stay sick, and I’ll see y’all around.

Cue “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” Meg Powell | Marketing Director Somehow I ended up in Plemmons 217 spring semester of my first year at App State. I genuinely could not tell you how I came to be leaning against the wall, not knowing a soul, simply taking in the beautiful chaos I would soon discover is student journalism. I started as a mere member of the Marketing Desk, scheduling stories and doing other odd jobs, but the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the marketing director. When reflecting on my time with The Appalachian, I keep coming back to the phrase “great friends

and great experience.” That really sums it up. Peers turned into great friends, new territories, in regard to social media and marketing, turned into familiar stomping grounds. Being a part of The Appalachian has been the most memorable and rewarding part of my college career. I am forever grateful to my fellow editorial members and advisor for constantly kicking a-- and being supportive shoulders to lean on.

Bringing the world closer Max Correa | Photo Editor, Spring 2022

Max Correa is of the Jewish faith and does not spell out his deity’s name out of respect. My time with The Appalachian, although short-lived, taught me many lessons. Two of them stand out to me after my time on staff: to enjoy the laughter and to bring the world closer. Being a photojournalist never came naturally to me. I started, and will finish, my time at App State as a chemistry student — medicine was my first life plan, but as an old Yiddish adage goes, “der mentsh trakht, un Got lakht.” Man plans, and G-d laughs. G-d’s laughter, for me, came in the form of a Luke Combs concert I had wanted to photograph before I’d even heard of The Appalachian. It also came in the form of that concert’s subsequent 18-month delay. During that delay, I taught myself and others to stand up for their work, to

ask questions and to bring the world closer to themselves. In bringing the world closer to myself, I found myself closer to the now-former Vice President of the United States, a celebrating tight end in his hometown SEC stadium and journalists with whom I argued, laughed and challenged, all in the pursuit of adapting to G-d’s laughter and bringing the world closer. As I go on to graduate school for photojournalism, I’m reminded that the drive to bring the world closer to oneself and others is at the core of any good journalist or person. So, if you ever feel like you need a change in perspective, go try what I did: revel in G-d’s laughter, adjust course and bring the world closer to you. P.S. to the photo desk: keep asking questions, shoot RAW and know your value as journalists.

Sam Cooke

There’s no doubt that my time at App State didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. I think all current seniors feel that way. I came wide-eyed and ready to do all the things, have all the experiences, meet all the people. It’s too easy to feel disappointed or guilty about what I missed out on that I completely overlook the wonder of what I did get to do and the relationships I did build. Like many of us, thanks to COVID-19, my semester abroad was canceled. And yet, I did two summers of internships abroad in places and with people that changed my heart and soul. I spent more time in my apartment than I had ever expected or wanted to in college. And yet, I established lifelong friendships with my roommates, who became key contributors to my personal and intellectual growth. I failed to get involved with the Boone community as much as I had hoped — my biggest regret. And yet, I still learned about the beauty and history of Appalachia and the

importance of community and intentionality. And I know I’ll be a better local citizen wherever I end up next because of what I’ve learned here. I wish I had joined The Appalachian and other student organizations sooner, to find people that care about the same things I do. And yet, I still joined. I was given valuable experiences and practical knowledge that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. For every letdown or feeling of regret, there are possibilities for amazement and growth right alongside. It’s why to this day I think bittersweetness is the most honest emotion. It’s proof that we’ve lived. And App State was a part of my living. Thank you professors, friends, fellow students, fellow staffers, for it all.

Thanks for everything Efrain Arias-Medina Jr. | Graphics Editor The summer before my first year I transferred to App State, I had already become the graphics editor. Not even knowing what the campus looked like or where Boone was at the time, I became a part of an organization that has honestly made my college experience the best four years. Despite being one of the only designers, the long work weeks, and countless all-nighters, I still wouldn’t trade it for anything else. I’ve gone through four editor-in-chiefs, multiple amazing editorial boards and two advisors. I can’t express enough how much of a huge impact everyone has had on me from the time we’ve worked together, whether some know it or not. I can’t thank this organization enough for all the things I was able to do and all the friends and peo-

ple I was able to meet, as well as giving me the opportunity to hold my position for as long as I did and for letting me have the freedom to experiment and learn along the way. I can definitely say my last year was definitely worth it and has the best group of editors I’ve worked with since I’ve been here. I’m really proud of what we’ve done, and I can’t wait to see where we all end up in the future. I’m not one to write a lot, but with this being my first and last article, it seems like a fitting end to my time on the paper, especially coming from someone behind the scenes. It’s been a pretty good run, and I can’t thank everyone enough for everything and for making it a really great four years.

Good things come to an end Mia Mendez | Multimedia Editor When it comes to trying to summarize my time here at The Appalachian and my time in Boone as a whole, a few words come to mind. The first of which is community. Everywhere I’ve turned I’ve been lucky enough in this weird mountain town to come into knowing what the real definition of that word means. Room 217 of Plemmons Student Union is no exception. I found friends I never thought I would make this far into my senior year, an extremely talented group of colleagues who deserve nothing short of the world, and some of my best memories here at App State. After my first semester in Boone in spring 2020, I wasn’t entirely sure I would make it to graduation. From countless ups and downs to all-nighters to everything in between, I found myself along with the second word that

Sam Cooke

comes to mind here, resilience. Making through a rocky first semester prepared me to really give my all to Appalachian as a whole and push myself in ways I wasn’t used to, whether I liked it or not. I never thought that at this point of my college career I would be begging for one more. One more all-nighter. One more rocky semester. One more up and at least one more down. But all good things must come to an end eventually, and The Appalachian and my time here at App State were too good to be true. So go outside on the sunny days and sit on Sanford with your friends. Have one more TApp Room taco. Find your home here, and be thankful for the family you’ve found along the way.
