Foreword Arabian racing, like every sport, has been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. We are extremely grateful to all those involved in putting together the domestic programme which started belatedly in September. Thanks to those efforts, we were able to enjoy a reduced programme of high class racing where we saw some impressive performances with the future in mind. Looking to the future, it was very encouraging to receive the news that, from 2021, the BHA have agreed that public trainers with BHA licences can train Arabian horses. This is the kind of initiative that will hopefully allow the sport to increase in popularity. These are the next steps for Arabian Racing to come under further regulatory control of the BHA. These steps will hopefully bring in new owners and more horses in training. I would like to thank the BHA, and especially Nick Rust, the outgoing Chief Executive, for the support they have given in bringing about the integration of Arabian racing with the full racing programme in the UK. My best wishes to everyone involved in Arabian racing for a successful 2021. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Patron

Welcome 2020 started full of promise, with the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) welcoming a new PA Listed race and prize money increases. Our aims to build on the achievements of the previous year were then swiftly curtailed by the arrival of COVID19. However, thanks to the hard work of the ARO team liaising constantly with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), Weatherbys and the support of the racecourses, Arabian racing was able resume racing on August 1st, much sooner than many other sports.
We congratulate all our champions, our Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum on his 19th owners’ championship and the success of his champion mare Wanaasa who gained her sire, the ever popular No Risk Al Maury, a well-deserved first sires’ title. A fourth trainers’ title for James Owen also demonstrates how our sport can nurture its’ participants from the beginning and welcome them back after time spent in other equestrian disciplines. Congratulations are also due to new trainer, Jessica Quinlan in securing the Arabian Racing Achievement Award, recognising her accomplishments in her first season training Consequently, it was inevitable the number of races would have Arabians. The success of our leading Arabian Al-Tabari should to be reduced, though there were still opportunities for all give all our smaller UK breeders hope that they can continue to levels. We thank all of our participants for keeping the office up be competitive. We also remind all in Arabian racing that ARO is to date with details of their horses in training, allowing the race still actively seeking funding to re-establish the breeders plan to be adjusted several times throughout the season. This undoubtedly assisted our return to racing. the BHA that from 2021 thoroughbred trainers will be permitted to train Arabians. This follows on from last December’s news Due to Covid-19 thoroughbred racing saw their prize money regarding the further integration of our sport with British levels reduced, however our most valuable race of the year, the thoroughbred racing. Without these gradual changes towards Qatar International Stakes (Gr1PA), was still the most valuable integration, it is hard to see how we could have raced so race of the day on the thoroughbred card at Goodwood. In 2021 existing (legacy) trainers wishing to train only Arabians can continue as normal, was second only to the Pertemps St Leger, the prestigious and those wishing to take out a full BHA licence in 2022 will be thoroughbred Group 1 headlining that Doncaster card. We would also like to thank the UAE President Cup series for assisted in this process by the ARO team. maintaining their prize money for our Arabian Derby at 2019 levels. ARO’s thanks must go to the Racing Foundation for their continued assistance and funding for this project which benefits Outside of the two international Group 1 PA races that we were both Arabian racing and British horseracing in general. The full able to hold, all our domestic races carried the same minimum integration of Arabian racing into the regulatory infrastructure of prize value as in 2019, with no race worth less than £2000 and British racing brings us into line with the rest of the world which has always been the vision of our Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan prize money down to sixth place. The Wathba Stallions Cup Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. series, aimed at the sports’ grassroots, also returned to the UK with the generous sponsorship of races double the minimum values. ARO Championships 2020 Champion Owner HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum The Arabian Racing Organisation’s Patron HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was champion owner for the 19th time, for the 17th year in succession. All five of his winners were homebreds, with Al Kaaser ending the season as the highest rated UK trained older horse. He has plenty to look forward to for next season as Loolwa was the highest rated four-year-old filly and Wanaasa the highest rated three-year-old filly, both are by stallions standing under the Shadwell Arabians banner. “I am delighted once again to be the leading owner for the 19th time. Every year it gets more competitive. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

have also been very patient, we’re looking forward to next year when hopefully everyone can return to the races as normal.”
Following on from his best season in terms of highprofile success, James Owen’s team continued to thrive in 2020, despite the reduced race programme to gain his James Owen fourth Trainers title. Though he was able to race successfully abroad, gaining several winners in Belgium, his first UK win was for his principal owner, HH Sheikh Hamdan, with Mazyoonah. With the majority of his winners only five years old or younger, he looks to have a another strong hand for 2021. They include Toofan and leading Arabian filly Wanaasa, for His Highness, as well as Serafim Forta, a homebred colt for Forta Stud. His own James Owen Racing Club also continued their success of last season. With a win for Arwen Forta and some well-placed efforts in Group races for Tijaary and Sattam, the Club finished fourth in the owners table on races won and fifth based on prize money. “Of course it’s been a difficult season, so all our thanks go to ARO, our team, all our owners and the sponsors for waiting for racing to start. We’ve got some nice progressive types coming along and with Shadwell’s support, who have been great, and our Racing Club who

Hopefully we can keep the momentum James Owen’s stable amateur Alex Chadwick proved that rolling on to next season.” his first jockeys' title in 2019 was no fluke, despite the reduced opportunities to ride and increased competition Alex Chadwick from professional jockeys. Off the mark for the season with Toofan, he followed up in the next two races with Al Kaaser and Arwen Forta, with his final podium success coming on Serafim Forta. Well supported by Owen, he was the only amateur to secure a ride in all 12 ARO domestic races, and like a true team player, also led up one of Owen’s runners, Alameen, in the UAE President Cup (UK Arabian Derby) at Doncaster. Like Owen, Chadwick was also full of praise for the team behind him saying: “It’s a massive achievement for me, as coming into this season with less races, I knew it would be a much harder task. I’d like to thank James, His Highness and all the owners for giving me the opportunities and all credit goes to everyone at home. “I have the great job of riding nice horses at the races, but there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, with

Champion Arabian AL-TABARI (2016 g Tabarak x Altesse Kossack (Marwan I))
Cheng took the blame, he broke his maiden in good style in a race which his dam had won in 2013.
Trained by Peter Hammersley and owned by his wife Michelle, Al-Tabari was bred by Julie Kelway, and has spent all of his life at Hammersely's yard in the Midlands, where he also trained the dam for Kelway's partner Rick Gould.
Hammersley considered ending the season on that high, but let Al-Tabari take his chance, dropped in trip and class the following month. It was a gamble that paid off with an impressive six and a half length win in a race that he also trained the second, third and fourth.
The four-year old gelding ended last season with an eyecatching fourth against older horses at Wolverhampton, their local track and made a similar impression filling the same spot on his seasonal reappearance. After a disappointing follow-up for which regular jockey Howard
After which Hammersley commented:“We’ve been patient with him, as I like to be with all my young horses. We’ll look forward to next season, as he has proved himself to be versatile as to trip, hopefully he'll have plenty of options."

Champion Arabian Mare WANAASA (2017 f No Risk Al Maury - Ouassila Thabet (Akbar))
Thabet won the Hatta International Stakes in 2007, having been runner-up the year before.
Owned and bred by HH Sheikh Hamdan and trained by James Owen, Wanaasa always looked a winner in the making, right from her debut third placing. A filly that travels well in her races, she was second to Toofan in another maiden at Wolverhampton, but it was her victory in a novice contest over seven furlongs at Chelmsford City that stood out. She drew clear of the field by six lengths, prompting Owen to say that she was the 'fastest Arabian I have trained'.
“I was particularly pleased to hear that Wanaasa, my homebred three-year-old filly, was the Champion mare. It is every owner’s wish to breed winners to run in their colours. My thanks to everyone involved at Shadwell and to James Owen, her trainer, for producing such a quality filly for the future.”
