CAREER SUCCESS FOR GRADUATE OF ARABIAN RACING Following the final fixture of the 2017 UK season, the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) offers their warmest congratulations to ARO Judge, Michael Roberts, on taking up his appointment as a Judge for the British Horseracing Authority. Roberts started his career with ARO three seasons ago, initially in a support capacity, however his long-term aim was always to be a judge. The primary function of the role is to place the horses as they cross the line, with the support of photo-finish technology where necessary. His role also includes monitoring the sponsorship scheme for owners. He began training for the position at the end of May and undertook his first appointment at Uttoxeter on 28th July. Working primarily in the North West, he has already been as far afield as Chepstow and Market Rasen, and he welcomes the level of variety that the role provides.

understanding of the role at interview. There are only about 10 BHA judges in the country, meaning competition for any vacancies is likely to be strong, so having practical experience that makes you stand out is key. I’d encourage anyone who wants to work in racing to join the team at ARO, everyone there has been fantastic, but Genny and Peter Haynes, Gary Capewell and Tricia Newman have been hugely supportive and really helped me to find my feet in the early days. ARO Director Genny Haynes commented: “Obviously we are delighted for Michael on his new appointment as a BHA Judge. This is yet another example of how Arabian Racing can benefit the wider racing industry by giving opportunities for education and career progression in all areas, not just riding and training horses. ARO wishes Michael every

success.”

Of his time with ARO and his recent appointment, Roberts said: “I've aspired to work in racing for a long time and saw ARO as an opportunity to get to know one of the lesser known areas of the sport. I have made some good friends and hope that I'll be able to continue judging for ARO alongside my BHA commitments.” He continued: “The experience I've gained with ARO has been critical in terms of being offered the BHA position, from having experience I could use in the initial application, to being able to discuss my THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Arc Weekend Three days in France featuring top class Group 1 Arabian racing begins with Europe's only Purebred Arabian racehorse sale at Saint-Cloud

Lot 23 Zalabiya, a filly by General who made €95,000 knocked down to

Emirates Bloodstock

For Arabian racing devotees, the 'Arc Weekend' begins on Thursday 28 September, with Europe’s only PA sale organised by Arqana which takes place at Saint-Cloud racecourse. The 128 catalogued lots in the mixed sale were made up of 46 two-year-olds, 20 broodmares, 37 horses in training, two yearlings and 23 endurance horses, which have been a recent addition to the sale.

Though there were four less horses offered on the day than last year, 112 as opposed 116, the clearance rate was up to 81% from 76%. Significantly this is the highest it’s been in over 10 years. However, with many of the major buyers from recent seasons absent from the bidding process, the aggregate was down by almost €1 millon Euros, though the top price was still over the €200,000 mark.

Top lot at Arqana - Djedahes (FR), in foal to Al Mamun Monlau, who made €210,000 Euros

That top lot was #65 Djedahes, an eight-year-old mare in foal to Al Mamun Monlau, who was knocked down to the Emirates Bloodstock Agency for €210,000. Her only living produce to date is a two-year-old filly by Seraphin Du Paon, however she is a Dahess half-sister to Sahabba, a Group 3 and Listed winner, who has also been placed seven times at Group level. Their granddam is the matriarch Cherifa, who has produced a host of black type winners and stallions, her blood is currently represented on the track in 2017 by the Group winners Tayf (Amer), and Handassa (Madjani) and his half-sister Jamaheer (Mahabb). Commanding the second highest price was Splasch (Njewman) in the horses in training segment. The unraced brother to Group winners Spleen and

Skoop, is also a half-brother to another Group winner and sire in Snoopi (Akbar), out of a Dormane mare. He was sold to Chantilly Bloodstock for €160,000. Heading the juveniles was Folie Du Paon, a full sister to Nymphea Du Paon. A Group 2 winner in France since her export to Abu Dhabi, the daughter of Mahabb has won two Group 3’s and been Group 1 placed. She was bought for €130,000 by Khalifa Hamad Al Attiyah, who has raced Djelamer with success this season in Europe. Leading consignor was Elizabeth Bernard, selling six lots for €308,000, which included the top lot Djedahes, whilst leading buyer was Emirates Bloodstock with 10 purchases for a

total of €491,000. However, Chantilly Bloodstock bought a further five horses to total €420,000. Although Munjiz and Nizam had eight lots a piece, they averaged €35,375 and €30,500 respectively, whilst heading the sires table was Dahess with five horses sold, averaging €66,400. As you would expect, thanks to Djedahes, leading covering sire was Al Mamun Monlau, with three lots sold averaging €74,667. A son of Muniz, the 2013 Kahayla Classic winners' first foals are now yearlings.

QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULAINS Gr1PA Saint-Cloud, France

Al Shahania's Rajeh (FR) and Francois-Xavier Bertras The Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains provided an historic first Group 1 win for the Al Shahania's champion racehorse and now sire Jaafer ASF, when the Francois Rohaut trained colt, Rajeh, maintained his unbeaten record to win by three lengths under Francois-Xavier Bertras. The colt is from a lovely family being out of an Tidjani unraced half sister to Kahayla classic winner Nez D'Or, Norphe, leading living US sire and Nisaee, dam of Arabian World Cup winner, Mkeefa. Jaafer ASF was a multiple Group 1 winner, whose wins included the Kahayla Classic and HH Emirs Sword in the Al Shahania colours. From his first two crops to race, he has already produced the 2016 Qatar Derby Trial winner and Group 1placed (against

older horses) Shabih Alreeh, who is a halfbrother to Kahayla Classic winner TM Fred Texas. Another winning colt Goumoh, also trained by Rohaut for Al Shahinia, was less than four lengths behind Rajeh at SaintCloud. Rohaut explained: “We knew that he was a good horse, and he is even more impressive as he matures. He’s got no issues, is easy and a pleasure to train. We are especially happy that this win has come in the presence of his owner and breeder, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. Goumoh had disappointed me at Deauville, after debuting well and we felt after that he needed blinkers. He is a good horse, but 2000 metres is a bit far for him and he’ll be better over a mile next year."

QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULICHES Gr1PA Saint-Cloud, France

Easter De Faust (FR) and Christophe Soumillon

The Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Pouliches was also won by a similar fashion when Easter De Faust and Christophe Soumillon drew clear to win by two and a half lengths from Al Ghashamiya and Najah.

She has finally come into herself”.

Trained by Elizabeth Bernard for Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari, she was only beaten half a length in the Group 2 Prix de Nevada II in Bordeaux de Bouscat earlier that month.

He commented:“She has shown that she is a first class filly. She disappointed us a little last time out, when she was keen in front. She is a classy filly. The dam was bred at our stud, and we bought the grand dam around thirty years ago. She was the first Arabian mare that I bought for a significant sum”.

Bernard said:“She is a very good filly, who has confirmed everything that we thought of her. A lot of athletes suffer from setbacks, and she has had a few problems. This win will obviously bring a lot of pleasure to her connections.

The filly is a daughter of Mahabb from the family of Nizam, Dahess, Muntasar and Bibi De Carerrere. Gérard Larrieu of Chantilly Bloodstock bred Easter de Faust along with his brother Jean-Paul.

QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES JUMENTS Gr1PA Chantilly, France

A win for Muneera (FR) ahead of Jamaheer (FR) and Almaa (FR)

The action then moved to Chantilly where the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments provided a thrilling finish, with Muneera just prevailing from Jamaheer by a head, with Almaa a similar distance away in third. Ridden by Christophe Soumillion for Damien de Watrigant, the four-yearold daughter of Dormane reversed the placings of the Group 3 Prix Nevador at La Teste with Jamaheer, who on that occasion had won by a length.

Bred by Dr Mohammed Al Nujaifi, her dam Hamiya has already produced the winners Hurra, Al Haail and Al Raha, but this filly is her best to date. Al Nujaifi commented: "I am very pleased that she won, she is a fantastic filly. It makes it more importsnt because I bred her and her family, so that gives me a special feeling. I also thank Val Bunting and Damien de Watrigant who have done a very nice job with her."

Zaid Al Nujaifi, Val Bunting, Dr Mohammed Al Nujaifi, Damien de Watrigant and Christophe Soumillon

He continued:"The dam is from a very noble strain called the Seglawi Jedran and she won 10 races, some of which were Group races, in Baghdad. All her progeny to date are winners in Europe. This the biggest win I have had in France and this race is probably the most important race for fillies in the world." Val Bunting of Esteem Bloodstock said:" Dr Al Nujaifi shipped her to me, in foal to an Iraqi stallion. We discuss the matings and I suggested that Dormane with Hamiya would be super and that's been proven today." Bunting is based in South West France and currently boards four mares for Al Nujaifi. Damien de Watrigant explained after the race: “As I said previously, I think that Muneera is better than Jamaheer on soft ground. Muneera is a filly that stays the distance. Here at Chantilly,

it’s a testing track and that made the difference. Jamaheer found herself in front a bit too soon, but that wasn’t her jockey’s fault. She is in good form, but she weakened a little in the finish. We have finished first and second, it’s hard to imagine any better!"

QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP Gr.1 Chantilly, France

Gazwan (GB) wins from Yazeed (FR) [far side] and Ebraz (GB)

The Qatar Arabian World Cup, the feature race for Arabians was given greater prominence on the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe card this year, run as the third race, it was even televised live on terrestial television in the UK. The race itself did not disappoint with the Qatar Cup-Prix Dragon one-two-three Ebraz,Yazeed and Gazwan dominating both the betting and the finish. Al Shahania's other runner, Ba'sil performed his usual pacemaking role, and was a good six lengths clear of the pack entering the final bend. Tracked by the popular mare Prada T and Avonmouth, Gazwan was settled nicley

behind that pair in company with Yazeed, folowed by Ebraz and Handassa, with Tayf on the far side. Ba'sil dropped away, his work done, as Gazwan and Ebraz kicked for home at the 400m mark, with Yazeed quickly making his challenge up the rail. From 300m onwards, the trio battled up the straight, no quarter given and there was only a head separating them at the finish. Though the margins were much closer, Yazeed confirmed the Dragon form, again finishing second, but this time Gazwan was the winner, with Ebraz having to settle for third.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

25

This gave trainer Julian Smart his fourth win in the race, but his first with a colt, having previously won in 2011 with Areej, 2012 with Mkeefa and in 2014 with Djainka Des Forges. Commenting after the race he said:"Gazwan showed his true class today, I'm so pleased for the horse, winning this race at the third time of asking, these Arabians definitely get better with age. He needed the prep race and maybe Ebraz didn't! We will never know. Blinkers may also have helped him. "We will give them a few weeks off and then Gazwan will probably head to the National Day Cup and Ebraz the Qatar Derby, both races are at the end of December."

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani said owner of the winner and third said:"“This success in the Qatar Arabian World Cup is a fantastic result for Al Shahania and for all Qatar. As the breeder, it is a great joy. "I am also very proud of Rajeh who won the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains. He was raised in France, a wonderful country for breeding”. Alban de Mieulle, the trainer of Yazeed, commented: “He is horse that I have always liked. We had to stop with him for a while, and this was only his fourth race. He was beaten by a very good horse, who is older than him and was a better horse on the day. From a tactical point of view, his jockey, [Pierre-Charles Bourdot] who is more used to riding thoroughbreds, thought he was riding one!”

Gazwan (GB) and Richie Mullen win the 2016 HH Emir's Sword

Gazwan made his debut in as a threeyear-old in a 6f maiden at Newbury, finishing fourth. That winter in Doha he was unbeaten, though finished third in the French Derby behind Mister Ginoux and Sylvine Al Maury on his European reappearance in France. He soon returned to form, scoring his first Group 1 in the Dubai International Stakes at Newbury, before chasing home Al Mourtajez when second in the 2015 World Cup at Longchamp. Back in Doha he rounded off the year with a win in the Group 2 Qatar Derby. February 2016 saw a decisive win in the HH Emir's Sword, beating Assy and Al Mourtajez. Fourth in the Arabian World Cup to Al Moutajez, he was without another Group win until December, when he won the Group 2

National Day Trophy - which is his likely next target this season. He was fourth to Ebraz in this years' HH Emirs Sword, behind both Tayf and Al Mourtajez and it would have been easy to think his best days were behind him, however he bounced back to form in the Group 1 Qatar Gold Sword in April. Back in Europe after a break, he suffered a narrow margin defeat at Newbury in the Dubai International and was well behind Yazeed and Ebraz when third in the Prix Dragon. Smart has always felt that stamina was his forte and that there are not enough staying races for him in the Pattern, however he has never been out of the first four in 22 starts in three countries.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

30

He has won six Group races, a further five conditions events and has been placed at Group level six times. By Amer, he is a full brother to the useful Group placed performer and now sire, Rathowan, and another, the five-year-old Shabah, who just made a winning debut in Doha this month. His dam Arc De Ciel is by Djendel and she is a half sister to Smart's first World Cup winner Areej and to the Group 1 placed Asra Min Albarq, both are by Amer. The Qatar Arabian World Cup is the second stage of the Doha Triple Crown. As the first stage, the Qatar

International Stakes was won by Ebraz at Goodwood in August, the series remains without a champion for another season, though many of these runners will reoppose in Doha for the HH Emirs Sword in February. www.alshahaniastud.com Relive the day by clicking on the following links Watch the Qatar Arabian World Cup here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmdakePQbMk

ARO SEASON FINALE Huntingdon, UK The final fixture of the UK season

James O'Donnell, Jo Mason, Mahaasen (FR), Richard Manson, James Owen and Omani IFHRA student

The final fixture of the UK Arabian racing season was dominated by Newmarket based trainer James Owen, who rounded off his most successful year yet by winning the first four races on the card with Insignia, Mahaasen, Dolfina D’Ibos and Tatbeeq, bringing his seasonal total to 23 winners, with 31 placed horses. Owen had already been confirmed as ARO Champion Trainer for a second season going into the fixture, as had Champion Lady Jockey Joanna

Mason, who also rode Mahaasen and Tatbeeq for ARO Champion Owner HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Insignia and Bronze Final winner Dolfina D’Ibos, provided multiple champion jockey Simon Walker with a double, however this year the Jockeys’ Championship was a notable first win for David Turner, whilst Ellie Mackenzie rounded off a magnificent season to be crowned Champion Novice Jockey.

Tatbeeq (FR) returns to the winners enclosure with Joanna Mason

ARO Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum won his sixteenth ARO Owners Championship, and thanks to Mahaasen, Tatbeeq and Almareekh, who won the Gold Final for Phil Collington, he concluded the season with a treble. Commenting on His Highness’s success, Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster said: “It is wonderful that HH Sheikh Hamdan has once again become leading owner. He is passionate about the Arabian horse and he puts so much into promoting Arabian racing around the world.” He continued: “On behalf of HH Sheikh Hamdan I would like to thank everyone involved in making this achievement possible once more. HH Sheikh Hamdan would also like to thank ARO and everyone involved in

arranging the race programme for all their hard work.” Owen was delighted with how his team had performed saying: “I’m so pleased for my parents who bred Insignia, he’ll probably be retired, but they have really enjoyed racing this season and have some nice youngsters coming through for next year." Insignia was also a close runner-up in the overall HARC horse championship. He continued: "I think Mahaasen was lucky as Taqdeeraat got left at the start, but she had the benefit of experience to help her. Tatbeeq has been slowly coming to hand, he really tried today and he should improve over the winter."

Dolfina D'Ibos (FR)

Of his champion mare Owen said: "Dolfina D’Ibos has run for me almost every meeting, but she has strengthened throughout the season and Simon gets on really well with her. She’s sound and she’s tough – she’s won on the All Weather, she’s won on the grass, she’s given some of our novice jockeys a great experience and ended up as Champion Arabian and also Champion mare.” He then thanked his principal owner, HH Sheikh Hamdan for his loyalty saying: “It’s been wonderful with his young horses coming through, and exciting with three-year-olds like Al Kaaser and Rafeef for next season. Shadwell are such a great team to

work with, it’s a privilege to train His Highness’s horses and I just hope I can train some nice winners for him in the future. I’m also really pleased for all my staff at home, they work really hard, they enjoy coming racing and their parents come along too. We’re a happy team.” ARO Champion Lady Jockey, Joanna Mason was also recording her second consecutive championship. She thanked Owen for his support saying: “It’s thanks to him that I’ve been able to ride nice horses. It’s amazing to get 10 winners, I would never have dreamt that was possible at the start of the season.”

Parma T (NL) and Christopher Bull wait patiently for Morgan Winstone

Though he had to settle for a third and a second on the day, David Turner secured his first ARO Jockeys’ title and is not far short of recording a landmark of 100 career winners. He commented: “It’s been a very good season thanks to all of Peter Hammersley’s owners and of course the Royal Cavalry of Oman." Turner continued: "I’ve always been thereabouts in the Championship over the years, and mostly this season, I’ve ridden the lower rated horses, which proves you can win a title from the lower end. However, some have been really nice horses who I’m sure will progress next year.” 2017 Racing Welfare (Arabian)

Ambassador Ellie Mackenzie was crowned Champion Novice Jockey. A delighted Mackenzie commented: “It’s been absolutely fantastic to be given the opportunities that I have and Racing Welfare have been good to me too. "I’m so lucky. I never expected it to be such a great season and to win a Group 2 race at Dubai International Arabian Races on my first ride there was incredible.” The Silver Final went to the game mare, Parma T, ridden by Morgan Winstone for the Bull family. She had won the Gold Final last year, but having slipped in the ratings, was back to her best when it mattered.

Cheik Roque (FR) and Will Pettis win the Open Handicap for Phil Collingotn and Athbah Stud

Trainer Phil Collington also scored a double, with Cheik Roque in the ARO Open Handicap for Athbah Stud and Almareekh in the Gold Final for HH Sheikh Hamdan. Though finishing runner-up again in the trainers’ title, he had recorded his best season to date with 16 winners and 28 placed horses in the UK, though he had also won on the continent too.

scenes by owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff. Summing up her time at ARO she said:"I have met many passionate individuals and wouldn’t have had the opportunity to gain as much experience anywhere else. I fully intend to utilise everything I have learnt at ARO in the future.”

Gemma Cobb, the out-going ARO Racing Operations Executive said: “It has been a great finish to the season at Huntingdon today, with the Gold, Silver and Bronze Finals proving very competitive and producing some fantastic finishes. "We have had some great racing throughout the season and it is a credit to all the hard work put in behind the

Nahdia Bint Chatanz (GB) and Mike Palmer lead the field on the first circuit of the HARC Handicap Conditions Stakes over 2 miles won by HARC Champion LB Farrah (GB) and Teresa Gavin (midfield)

LB Farrah and Teresa Gavin claimed their second Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC) UK Championship, following their decisive win in the HARC Handicap Conditions race, run over two miles as the penultimate race on the Season Finale card. Facing a field of 10 runners, they finished six lengths clear of Kallista, with Windsor’s HARC winner, Top Trip, half a length away in third. LB Farrah (Sambist x Simeon Safira) who Gavin owns, trains and rides, won the first HARC race of the 2017 season, a conditions event over a mile at Taunton and has twice been placed in handicaps over the summer, before returning to HARC company for her final win of the year.

Gavin commented: “I’m absolutely delighted LB Farrah has been crowned Champion UK HARC Horse for the second consecutive year. She has come on again from her success last year and although she has always been a quirky mare, she has always thrived on her work. I feel this season she has noticeably matured and grown stronger again too. “I couldn’t be more proud of her for winning the HARC race at Huntingdon, she has never run over two miles before, but I knew she would give everything she had. I am extremely grateful to the sponsors for establishing this series of races.”

ARO Director Genny Haynes said: “We thank HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his support of Arabian racing and congratulate him for securing his sixteenth ARO Owners Championship. We also thank the Arabian Horse Organization for their sponsorship of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Finals, Forta Stud for sponsoring the fillies’ maiden and the Heritage Arabian Racing Club for their series of races.”

She continued: “We also thank Baileys Horse Feeds for sponsoring the Best Turned Out awards today and to Racing Welfare for their sponsorship of the Best Turned Out Championships. Peter Hammersley’s staff won the large yard team award, and Ria Tillet of Collington Racing won the individual award (large yard), whilst Sarah Davenport and Jayme Plumb shared the small yard individual award.”

She also congratulated Paul Simmons, who was appointed to the board of Directors at ARO earlier in the year, on receipt of the Shomran Trophy and Ellie Mackenzie who received the Grass Roots Award from Anna and Brian Wallace. Both awards recognise an individuals’ contribution to the sport throughout the season. The ARO Best Newcomer Award went to Said Al Badi of the Royal Cavalry of Oman, who was not present to receive it. The AHS Leading Owner award went to Heather Phillpott, AHS Leading trainer was Teresa Gavin and AHS Premium Scheme winner was LB Farrah. Concluding Haynes said: “We also thank the staff at Huntingdon and all the racecourse teams who have hosted ARO fixtures and single races this year. 2017 has been our most successful in terms of the number of Purebred

Arabian entries and declarations for some time and we look forward to building on this seasons’ success next year.” Relive the day by clicking on the following links All the races can be viewed through ARO's dedicated YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwscpRWMD3rRpS3RJVRet9s2lVZsR-WGj
