NEWS 2016 UK ARABIAN SEASON SPRINGS INTO ACTION Last month the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) was delighted to announce that the 2016 UK Arabian racing season will start on 17 April. The opening fixture will be a first visit for ARO to Chelmsford City racecourse since 2008, with six Purebred Arabian races supported by Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR).

This will be one of three fixtures scheduled for the Essex all weather track, which will bookend the ARO 2016 season, as they also play host to the Season Finale on 25 September, also supported by DIAR. The full fixture list is due to be published next month subject to approval by the British Horseracing Authority.

Gill Duffield wins 2015 Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Horserace Writers & Photographers Association Derby Arabian Award The 49th Annual Luncheon of the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association, supported for the third year by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, was held at the Lancaster London on Monday 7 December. Hosted by Sally Ann Grassick and Nick Luck, the awards now include an Arabian Award, which this year went to Gillian Duffield, who retired from training Arabian racehorses in 2015. The full list of all the nominees for the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Arabian Award as follows:

GILL DUFFIELD Mrs G Duffield is arguably the most familiar name in UK Arabian Racing. Having been ARO’s champion trainer 12 times, she is a true ambassador for the sport. Gill announced her retirement from training earlier this year and finished the season with 18 winners, twice that of her nearest rival in the trainers title. Her last winner was at Lingfield Park, fittingly in the colours of her long-time owner HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Duffield’s career highlights include four consecutive Dubai Kahayla Classic victories between 2004 and 2008 and an association with some of Arabian racing’s most successful horses including Madjani, Kaolino, Bengali D’Albret and No Risk Al Maury.

SIMON WALKER Jockeys Simon Walker and Phil Collington have dominated the ARO Jockeys championship since 2002. Since then Simon has won 9 championships, including the 2015 title which he sealed with 13 winners. One of Walker’s best moments was in the 2014 QREC Harwood International Stakes (Group 1 PA) when it formed run part of the Ladbrokes St Leger card. Simon was the only amateur rider in the field but used his knowledge of Arabian horses to great effect in taking the UK’s most valuable race for Arabians. PHILIP COLLINGTON Phil Collington has provided Arabian racing enthusiasts with a great many memories during his time as the retained amateur rider for HH Sheikh

Hamdan. Phil has acted as assistant trainer to Gill Duffield in recent years but has still maintained his riding commitments. Phil has won a total of 5 champion jockey titles and with 13 winners this year he only narrowly lost out on places to Simon Walker. WHISPER 12 year old mare WHISPER has raced with ARO every year since 2008. She is owned by the Almost All Partnership and trained by Adam Newey, who is also half of the Partnership. 2015 saw her finish runner up in the Purebred Arabian Championship, as well as taking the titles of Champion Mare and Champion Heritage Arabian. Her versatility was proven by winning back to back races in July this year, over 1m 4f and 7f.

BURT SCORES SECOND SUCCESS IN JOURNALISTS COMPETITION Specialist Arabian photographer and journalist Debbie Burt has taken the top award in this year’s Dubai International Arabian Races Journalists and Photographers Competition, repeating her success in 2012. Staged under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, the competition is now in its seventh year and has become a prominent feature in the promotion of Arabian racing’s showcase fixture which takes place at Newbury Racecourse in July. Burt, who was also runner-up in the competition last year, wins £5,000 plus a further £2,000 to be donated to a charity of her choice for her article which appeared in International Thoroughbred Magazine and beat off stiff competition in the category for Best Feature Article. She said, “I am absolutely thrilled to have won this award. I entered pieces in several categories and to be credited with the best feature article is wonderful. “Sheikh Hamdan’s generosity and the Dubai International Arabian Races have done so much to promote Arabian Racing globally and it is a privilege to be considered to have played a small part in its success. “I am a supporter of Arabian racing through race sponsorship with the Arabian Racing Organisation and this year I have been fortunate enough to have shares in an Arabian racehorse which came fourth in the Shadwell UK

Arabian Derby. I’ve been able to become more involved in Arabian racing by putting last year’s prize money towards these endeavours and it has been a wonderful experience so far.”Burt received her award from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum at a ceremony in London today hosted by H.E. Mirza Al Sayegh, Director of the Office of the event’s Patron Sheikh Hamdan who told media and guests, “Sheikh Hamdan’s passion for Arabian racing is renowned world-wide and he is very pleased to recognise the contribution of the media who do so much to help promote the sport. “The Dubai International Arabian Races has grown into series of major international events but we are very proud of its origins here in the UK and delighted that this European showcase for Arabian racing continues to grow in stature and popularity.” The format of the competition was revised this year to reflect the growing importance of online media platforms, and entries in four different categories were considered by a panel of judges chaired by Abdulla Al Ansari. The panel comprised Shadwell Director Richard Lancaster, Newbury Racecourse’s Head of Communications Andy Clifton, leading UAE journalist and publisher Mohammed Taha, Arabian Racing Organisation Director Genny Haynes, and Sportsguide’s Managing Director Philip Brannan.

A runners-up prize of £2,000 was awarded to Liz Price, also a previous winner for her article in the French publication Les Cashier du Cheval Arabe.

international news to its readership.

Commenting on the entries, Abdulla Al Ansari said, “This category in particular provided the judges with a very tough decision. The winner and runner-up both captured the most important aspects of the raceday and did well to educate and inform the reader.

The prize for best coverage in the Online category went to another of last year’s winner’s Geoffrey Riddle who had three entries considered by the judges. One which appeared on the Racing UK website and two which were made available to readers world-wide via the website of The National, Abu Dhabi’s English speaking multi-media title, one of which earned him the category’s only prize of £2,000.

“We were particularly impressed by the way the winning article charts the development of Arabian racing and the opportunities it provides to promote Arabian culture alongside the sport.” The award for the Best Column and the first prize of £2,500 went to freelance journalist Nabila Ramdani whose article appeared in Asian World News, a UK monthly publication launched in 2007 which aims to bridge diverse cultures in Britain by offering an array of immediate local, national and

The runners-up prize of £1,000 in this category also went to Liz Price, this time for an article in Paris Turf.

The contribution of the photographers was again recognised in a category introduced to reward the photographer of the best published picture which for the second year running was won by Steven Cargill, President of the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association for his image of runners bursting from the stalls.

British Champion apprentice jockey, Tom Marquand, who rounded off a successful 2015 with a BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year nomination, kick-started 2016 with a five-week mentorship programme in Australia funded by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Global Arabian Horse Racing Festival.

Marquand, who began his scholarship at the beginning of January, will be assisted with his training in Victoria by Matt Hyland and Melisa Weatherley from Racing Victoria. He is the first to start the programme comprising 12 other candidates selected from a total of 19 applications representing countries including Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Korea, Poland, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States.

The Racing Scholarship Fund (RSF), was inaugurated in November last year following the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) general assembly meeting in Abu Dhabi. It is the first of its kind to help promising young talent, (employed as

Ryan Colley, who graduated from Doncaster’s Northern Racing College (NRC)and is now assistant trainer to Ruth Carr was also one of the twelve selected and is keen to pursue a career in Racing Administration. He will also start his scholarship this month and heads off to Lexington, Kentucky, where he will study the work of raceday officials, in particular the role of the starter and his team. Colley, who will be reporting back to both the NRC and also Carr’s monthly stable newsletter, said. “I’m really excited. It’s my first visit to Ameerica, and I am looking forward to seeing how their racing system operates. I’m told it is very different from ours, so this is a fantastic opportunity to see it firsthand. “Having been a stable lad and ridden as an amateur, it will be fascinating to learn new skills from the racing officials’ side. I’ll also be spending two days in Dallas, taking a certificate in starting procedures, which will be a useful qualification on my CV.” Standing at over 1.8m tall, Colley, who had never ridden before he attended the NRC course, aims to develop his career out of the saddle and become a raceday official. “My ambition is to become a starter in the UK and my experience America could provide me with a valuable foot in the door,” He said.

We look forward to hearing about his experiences.” Ms Lara Sawaya, Chairperson of IFHRA and Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Racing Festival, thanked HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential affairs, for his innovative initiative in evolving a plan to train and fund young riders and staff. “The IFHRA Racing Scholarship Fund is designed to benefit both students of IFHRA member racing academies and employers within horse racing and related industries. Students will work abroad in real-world situations gaining experience and benefitting from mentorships which will help their career progression. At the same time, future employers will also benefit from IFHRA RSF students who have experience and gained training in the newest practices our industry has to offer.” Ms Sawaya said. She added, "The goal is to improve the horse racing and breeding industry workforce by providing deserving racing academy students or recent graduates with the opportunity to gain new training and experience in racing and related disciplines, while learning about new cultures and customs.”

ARABIAN RACING PROUD TO SUPPORT HEREFORD REOPENING The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) welcomes the announcement that Hereford racecourse is to reopen for National Hunt racing in October. Though closed for racing under rules since 2012, Arabian racing has continued to stage up to five fixtures per year at the course, thanks to the generous funding of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Global Arabian Horse Racing Flat Festival. This is the same organisation which has sponsored Champion UK Apprentice, Tom Marquand’s trip to Australia, via the Racing Scholarship Fund and the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies. ARO has been delighted to support Arena Racing Company during the four year absence of National Hunt racing at

the track and looks forward to returning there during the 2016 UK Arabian racing season. There will be four proposed meetings, (subject to BHA approval) all sponsored by the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival – dates to be announced shortly. ARO Director Genny Haynes commented. “It has been a pleasure to work with ARC and all the team at Hereford racecourse over the past four years. We are proud that our Arabians have been able to keep Hereford’s racecourse alive and thank the local community for their support of our fixtures. The reception this news has received in all quarters shows just how important racing is to Hereford and Hereford is to racing.”

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN RACES SPONSORS ITALY’S FIRST EVER INTERNATIONAL STAKES RACE FOR PUREBRED ARABIANS The committee of the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) in association with ANICA (Associazione Nazionale Italiana Cavallo Arabo) are proud to announce that the first ever IFAHR authorised stakes race for purebred Arabians in Italy will be run on Sunday 8th May at Capannelle Racecourse, Rome. The race will be accompanied by a contest for domestic (Italian) Arabians on a card sponsored entirely by companies from the UAE, including Shadwell Stud. The initiative was discussed at the Dubai sponsored race day in 2015 and DIAR have supported ANICA in their bid to gain IFAHR membership and stage international races. The Dubai International Arabian Race (Listed) will carry a prize fund of €30,000 and will be open to horses of 4 year and up over a distance of 1900m.

This major step forward for Arabian racing in Italy and has been the result of hard work from IFAHR, ANICA and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture as well as key global sponsors in the Arabian racing community. DIAR and Shadwell have sponsored Arabian racing in Italy for over 10 years and it is hoped that the winner of this Listed race will make the journey to compete for the bonus fund at the DIAR showpiece fixture, held at Newbury Racecourse on Sunday 24th July. “We are thrilled at the decision and very pleased to be the sponsor of the first international stakes race for Arabian horses in Italy” said Richard Lancaster on behalf of DIAR “ANICA and the Ministry of Agriculture have worked very hard and we hope this is the start of a prosperous and optimistic time for Arabian racing in Italy.”

2015 INTERNATIONAL PURE BRED ARABIAN CLASSIFICATIONS ANNOUNCED The International Classifications were announced last month with Al Mourtajez (FR) (Dahess x Arwa) topping the older horse division with a rating of 130. This was based on his five length success in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Group 1 PA) in a record breaking time of 2.10.48 and is the highest rating since classifications began in 2011. His other Group 1 PA successes came in the HH Emir’s Sword in Doha and the Doha Cup (Prix Manganate) in Deauville. Behind him on 126 is his stablemate Al Mouwaffak, based on his second to Al

Mourtajez in the Doha Cup. Whilst both horses are trained by Thomas Fourcy for Al Shaqab, it is also an important dual success for Hassan Mousli, Nada Mousalli and Faiz Al Elweet who bred them. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Manark was in third on 123 for his scintillating Dubai Kahayla Classic win, also in record time. Whilst HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Sir Bani Yas was rated 122 in fourth for his win in the Qatar Harwood International Stakes at Goodwood, which was the highest rated UK race in the list.

A total of 59 older horses were rated at 110 or above, down from 66 in 2014. This was also reflected in the threeyear-old ratings where 13 horses were rated 105 or more, as opposed to 17 in the previous year. The top rated in this division was HH

Sheikh Hamdan’s homebred Muraaqib (FR) (Munjiz x Tashreefat) on 118 for his win in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Group 1 PA) at SaintCloud, having previously scored at that level in the Al Rayyan Cup (Prix Kesberoy) in Deauville.

QATAR INTERNATIONAL RACING FESTIVAL 2016 This year's Qatar International Racing Festival will be held on February 26 to 28 with the feature race for Arabians being the US $1 Million HH The Emir's Sword Group 1 PA over 1m4f. The Festival now falls on the weekend to encourage a wider participation from overseas. Entries for the International races closed on 26 January, with a supplementary stage on 21 February and declarations by 12 noon on the 22 February. The final day of the Festival opens with the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA) for 4 year olds and up, run over a mile with a prize fund of US $250,000. At this stage there are 56 entries, though last year's winner Mister Ginoux is not among them, having been retired to stand at the Haras de Thouars at the end of last season.

However Al Anga and Aden who filled the places are entered, as is Taraf for the same connections (Julian Smart and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani), who is currently the leading Arabian there this season following her win in the HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy at the Al Rayyan track last month. Also entered is the Al Maktoum Challenge R1 (Gr1 PA) winner Thakif, Liwa Oasis (Gr1 PA) winner Sha'red and Dubai International Stakes (Gr1 PA) winner Djet Taouy.

Mister Ginoux (FR) will not be defending his title in the Qatar International Cup THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

16

Al Mourtajez (FR) gallops away with the 2015 HH The Emir's Sword

The penultimate race is now the HH The Emir's Sword, the final leg of the Doha Triple Crown, which began with the Qatar International (Harwood) Stakes (Gr1 PA) at Goodwood in August and continued with the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp. Sadly there will be no added excitement of a potential winner for the US $1 million bonus, as those races were won by Sir Bani Yas and Al Mourtajez resepectively. However the 43 entries does include last year's winner and leading International Purebred Arabian Racehorse of 2015, Al Mourtajez, who gained the top rating of 130 when winning the aforementioned Qatar Arabian World Cup. Last year's Dubai International Stakes (Gr1 PA) winner Gazwan and the 2014 HH The Emir's Sword winner Assy are among the entries from the home team. International entries also include HH Presidents Cup (Gr1 PA) winner Abu Alabyad from the UAE. Umm Qarn's

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) winner Kalino and the evergreen American challenger, So Big Is Better, hold entries in both races. In a press release on the QREC website, General Manager, Nasser Sherida Al-Kaabi said "The large number of entries are a proof of the interest shown by major owners in Qatar and from around the world. Owners from Europe, the USA, the UAE and Oman want to be part of this prestigious event for a chance ot compete for the Sword, the other trophies and cups, for both Pure Arabians and Thoroughbreds." He continued"France Galop, our partner for the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe; Goodwood, our partners for the Goodwood Festival and Newbury Racecourse, our partners for the Al Shaqab Lockinge, have all been invited to be part of this celebration and grand event."

ARABIAN RACING ORGANISATION 2015 ANNUAL AWARDS

Steve Harrison receives the Shomran Trophy from Amanda Smith

Taking place on Saturday 30 January, the 2016 Arabian Racing Organisation Annual Awards Dinner and Dance relocated to a new venue, the Ardencote Manor Hotel, near Warwick. Racing manager Amanda Smith introduced the evening with a seasonal highlights film, which was followed by a review from ARO commentator, Gary Capewell. The first two awards went to the same horse, the 12 year old mare Whisper, as Champion Arabian Mare and Champion Heritage Arabian Racing Club qualified performer. Her two wins, under regular pilot Page Fuller, contributed to Fuller

winning the Ladies Championship and her owners, The Almost All Partnership, winning the Arab Horse Society Owners Award. The AHS Trainer Award went to Georgina Ward, whlst the AHS Premium Scheme Award (for the top horse by a Premium Scheme Sire ) went to LB Farrah (by Sambist (SU)). It was quite a night for Team Newey as Will Pettis went home with the Novice Championship, and both he and Fuller, were joint runners-up in the Ride of the Year nominations, on Syrah Gris and Kamikaze respectively, both horses in the Almost All colours.

Simon Walker recieves his ninth ARO Jockeys Title Award from Amanda Smith

The Jockeys Championship went right to the wire and was the closest it had been for some years with Simon Walker winning his ninth ARO Jockeys title, with 13 wins, 8 seconds and 3 thirds from 35 rides. Breathing down his neck had been Phil Collington, also with 13 wins, but he lost out having scored 6 seconds and 7 thirds from 39 rides. Close behind was Steve Harrison with 12 wins, 7 seconds three thirds from 34 rides.

and he also sponsored five awards, supporting British bred runners, plus Best Gelding and Best Vetran.

Whilst he may not have gained a Championship, Harrison did not go home empty handed, as he received the Achievement Award, The Shomran Trophy, having had an outstanding season reaching the milestone of 100 winners when finally coaxing a win out of perennial maiden Amyzing Zayin in June and finishing the season on 107 career winners.

Zayin Arabian Stud Best British Bred Stallion was Man of Dreams (Nizam x Dante's Dream), trained by Carol Legg and owned by her father Eric. He paid for his season when winning the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) UK leg on his seasonal debut at Lingfield under Japanese professional Aoi Kinomae. Though he didn't score again, he still made the frame three times in six subsequent starts.

Paul Simmons of Zayin Arabian Stud has long been a support of Harrison as a jockey

Zayin Arabian Stud Best British Bred Mare was the 5 year old Callymay (Dahess x Raada) bred by Paul Beard and now racing for Delyth Thomas. She was kept busy with 10 starts and though her sole win was over 1m1f at Hereford, she also made the frame four times.

SIMON WALKER ARO Champion Jockey Simon Walker took his tally of ARO Championships to nine last year, though Phil Collington and Steve Harrison made him work for it, with Collington scoring the same total of winners (13) it was the placings which settled the title.

Highlights included a double on Dubai International Arabian Raceday with Abhar (above) in the 1m5f Rotana Hotels and Resorts Premier Handicap and Kao Kat MHF (below) in the National Academy of Indian Payroll Handicap over 7f.

Nicsar Diamond Jubilee and Phil Collington go to post at Windsor

Zayin Arabian Stud Best British Bred Juvenile was Sarah Innes and Nicola Buchan's Niscar Diamond Jubilee (Madjani x Jumah). Trained by Adam Newey, the chestnut colt ran six times and though failing to win, was second in maidens at Hereford and Windsor. Zayin Arabian Stud Best Gelding went to the nine year old Senor Dublcheck (Bengali D'Albret x Mais) trained by Claire Taylor. Ridden in all his seven starts by Rob Woollard, his sole win earnt his jockey the Ride of the Year Award when scoring at Bath. Zayin Arabian Stud Best Vetran was the ever popular Roches Du Cayrou (FR) (Newday x Kahinaoura) who showed he still had what it takes when winning the Shadwell Stallions Handicap Stakes under George Blackwell at the ARO Season Finale at Huntingdon in September. Delyth Thomas's 17 year old had also been

second and third on his two other starts last season. The ARO Champion Purebred Arabian title went to HH Sheikh Hamdan's Bon Baiser De Faust (FR)(Madjani x Orphe Du Clos), who won three and was placed twice, from five starts. Though he ended the season with Gill Duffield, his first two runs were for new trainer James Owen and those wins helped gain Owen the Arabian Magazine Best Newcomer Award. Owen will continue to train for HH Sheikh Hamdan in 2016, along with Phil Collington, following the retirement of Gill Duffield in September as His Higness's UK retained trainer.

His win in the DIAR Season Finale, Sunday 20th September Handicap Stakes at Bath, was just such a ride however, and it was no surprise to see Woollard win the title as the grey snatched victort on the line by a nose.

Though runningly a little freely in the ealry stages, he maintained his position on the rail and was always the one to catch.

The eight year old stallion by Mahaab (AE) had finished third on his seasonal debut in the HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Group 1PA) and put a disppointing run in a Group 3 behind him on his latest start.

Speaking of the winner Dobbs said."He almost broke too well. I was travelling strongly throughout and he has just galloped all the way to the line."

Showing good early pace, Thakif was soon in the lead from his inside draw.

AF Mathmoon went with him at the 500m mark, however Thakif ran on for a comfortable victory leaving the remainder of the field trailing in his wake.

He continued "We had a good draw and were able to utilise it. It is a great start to the Carnival."

HH SHEIKHA FATIMA BINT MUBARAK LADIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (IFAHR) 2016 SERIES Oman & Australia

Jhannah Stolt and Abdullah bin Muslim Rasbi's Graffiti BVF win in Muscat

SWEDEN SCORES IN OMAN AS FESTIVAL GETS UNDERWAY The HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival began in Oman last week, with the first race of the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship being won by Jhannah Stolt of Sweden on Graffiti BVF. She was following in the footsteps of

fellow countrywoman, Josephin Landgren who won the first race of last years’ series. The 29 year old added a tenth career win as she snatched victory in the last furlong from the long time leader, Hungarian, Rebeka Gonzci, riding Al Minari, whilst Melanie Plat, representing France, was third on Ghazi. Stolt had previously been second in another of the series races back in 2014.

The ten ladies, from Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Oman, South Korea and Sweden, who were racing over a mile for a prize fund of €30,000 Euro, included two professionals, Ahn Hyoree from South Korea and Jamie Kah from Australia. A delighted Stolt commented. “I am so happy to give my Sweden a second win in a row here in Oman. The trainer [Khalifa bin Hamdad] asked me to stay close to the leading pack and I did just that, and in the final stage my horse responded very well. “In 2014 I came second, but today I was on a date with luck and I’m happy to qualify for the World Championship Final in Abu Dhabi. This is the dream of every jockey participating in this series.” She added. Alyson Deniel who was representing Great Britain, was out of luck on this occasion, finishing sixth, however she had previously won a leg of the series in Australia, and rode in the finals in 2014. She was full of enthusiasm for the opportunities the series had offered her saying. “Wow! What a fantastic series of International races. It brings the best amateur and apprentices from around the world to compete on level terms. It gives you the chance to go to places that some of us can only dream of. Competing in Australia, Oman and Abu Dhabi are some of the best highlights of my career so far. “We, as competitors, want for nothing whilst we are away - wonderful hotels, food and hospitality. Lara Sawaya does an exceptional job of at organising everything. I’ve been very lucky to have

been invited to represent Great Britain and would love to continue to do so. Our Jockey Co-ordinator, Sarah Oliver, is so important to the Festival and works extremely hard. She continued. “Riding Arabians are very different from riding Thoroughbreds, they are smaller, sharper in their movement. They are great fun and extremely tough with an amazing recovery rate. “Even though I didn’t win this time, the trip to Muscat, Oman was great. The racetrack and surface at Al Rahba racecourse was very different to what I am used to at home. I thoroughly enjoy riding in the series which as well as giving me the opportunity to experience racing in other countries, gives me the chance to make new friends and we can share our experiences and knowledge.”

HE Hamad Sultan Saif Al Suwaidi, who welcomed the effect such events have in cementing the relationship with Oman, commented. “The Festival is doing a great job of promoting our heritage sport all over the globe and I thank the UAE leaders for their support.” Ms Sawaya, after thanking the UAE Embassy, its staff and the Oman racing organisation for all their hospitality during the staging of the Festival race said. “The detailed calendar of events of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival will be announced during the General Assembly meeting of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies in Abu Dhabi next month.”

DUTCH DELIGHT ON AUSTRALIA DAY The second leg of the 2016 HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) was run as part of the Australia Day Races at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. Nine lady riders lined up from Great Britain, Sweden, Ireland, France, South Korea, the Netherlands, Hungary, Germany and as well as the host nation, racing over a mile for a prize fund of €30,000. They included two professionals - Mina You from South Korea and Australia’s Lauren Stojakovic, the first woman to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, a Group 1 Thoroughbred contest which is Victoria

Racing’s most valuable two year old event. However it was another win for the amateurs as Cindy Klinkenberg of the Netherlands, riding the favourite Warrawee Naaziq, got up on the line to win by a head from Coolinda Park Winston ridden by Mina You. They were well clear of Germany’s Eva Maria Herresthal and Justice For All who denied top UK lady amateur Serena Brotherton a placing in the series. A jubilant Klinkenberg said “I can’t believe it! I want to say thank you to Lara Sawaya, the HH Sheikha Fatima Mubarak Ladies World Championship and all the people who wished me the best of luck! And of course the nicest group of girls!”

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

34

Warrawee Naaziq, owned and trained by Kim Noble was the winner of four of his previous eight starts and had been runner up in this contest last year. Noble was full of praise for her horse and jockey saying “The little champ Warrawee Naaziq did it. Ridden perfectly by Cindy Klinkenberg, they settled midfield and started their move at the home turn. They had to negotiate around and through the field to chase down the leader, but they caught up and he put his pretty little head in front. He’s a little champ showing true grit and determination. Thank you to Lara Sawaya and the Sheikh Mansoor Global Racing Festival, the Melbourne Racing Club and NARA for making this all possible.”

Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) and Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR) said the Festival was proud to be staging the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) race in Australia.

Though only fourth here, Great Britain’s Serena Brotherton explained what it meant to her to ride in the series. “The HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies World Championships gives lady amateur riders a unique opportunity to ride abroad at racecourses that we would never, otherwise, be able to ride at. It is an amazing addition to the worldwide amateur programme and we are extremely lucky that we are invited to participate in it!” Jake Norton of Melbourne Racing Club spoke of the chance this unique event gives the club to connect to the wider racing community. “We like to develop international relations, and this is part of that, but there’s quite a substantial community within Australia in Arabian racing, and we get to showcase on the biggest stage once a year. We have horses coming from all across Australia to participate and a lot of visitors for that reason.”

“We thank His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs for providing this opportunity,” Ms Sawaya said. “Caulfield Racecourse is a prestigious racing centre in Australia and to stage the Festival’s race as part of the Australia Day, will give Purebred Arabian racing and the lady jockeys a great boost,” she added. “When Michelle Payne became the first lady jockey to win the Melbourne Cup last year, the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival also shared in the historic victory as Payne had also ridden in a HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) race.” “The previous races held here in Australia have been a huge success and coming and competing here is a tremendous opportunity and experience for the lady jockeys. We thank the Melbourne Racing Club for this” she said. “With the backdrop of this great achievement by a lady jockey and the constant supervision and direction of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and Head of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood to support women in sport, we feel this race is another step in that direction,” Ms Sawaya stated.
