BETFAIR TO SUPPORT STABLE STAFF WEEK AND THE CLOCK TOWER CUP Racing Welfare is delighted to announce that Betfair will be sponsoring the inaugural Stable Staff Week, which is to take place from Monday 27th June to Saturday 2nd July. Stable Staff Week aims to bring the racing industry together to inform and engage horseracing followers and supporters about the passion, skill and dedication required to work with racehorses. The week will incorporate a range of PR initiatives to celebrate the vital part that stable staff play in the production of British horseracing and generate awareness about Racing Welfare’s role in supporting racing’s workforce. The pinnacle of the week will be the Betfair Clock Tower Cup on Racing Welfare’s Raceday at Doncaster on Friday 1st July, a charity race which sees stable staff switching saddles to become jockeys and riding horses trained by their bosses. The prize on offer for the race will be a scholarship at the British Racing School or the Northern Racing College, where the winner will receive the highest standard of training to either attain their Category A Amateur Jockey License, or undertake another training course in order to advance their career in racing. The Amateur Jockey License option would involve the same intensive training Victoria Pendleton received at the beginning of her Switching

Saddles journey. The Raceday will also include a charity lunch and auction to raise funds for Racing Welfare. It will be held in Doncaster’s superb Mallard Restaurant, with a champagne reception (kindly sponsored by Pommery), an excellent 3-course lunch and an exciting auction. James Midmer, Head of Communications at Betfair comments, ‘We are thrilled to be a part of Stable Staff Week and to support the fantastic work Racing Welfare do within the horseracing industry and community. Stable staff deserve recognition for the integral part they play in the sport; without their commitment and hard work, horseracing wouldn’t be able to exist. The scholarship on offer in the Betfair Clock Tower Cup is with the British Racing School or the Northern Racing College, and will provide a great opportunity for the winner of the race to add to their jockey experience and build on their career in horseracing. Dawn Goodfellow, Chief Executive of Racing Welfare adds, ‘We are extremely grateful to Betfair for sponsoring Stable Staff Week and the Charity Raceday at Doncaster, featuring the Betfair Clock Tower Cup. We look forward to everyone involved in racing joining forces to recognise and celebrate the fundamental role that the stable staff play in the delivery of British Horseracing.’

Carole Goldsmith, the BHA’s Director of People and Development, also comments; ‘The creation of a Stable Staff Week provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the immense contribution of the sport’s skilled and dedicated workforce who work all hours of the days to ensure that our horses benefit from the highest levels of care. Alongside the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards event, it is very pleasing to see such committed staff receive the recognition they deserve. The Betfair Clock Tower Cup is sure to prove a real highlight within the programme of events organised by Racing Welfare, shining the spotlight on the riding talents of those stable staff involved in the race.’

Trainers wishing to nominate a member of staff, or staff wishing to get their trainers to nominate them to ride in the Betfair Clock Tower Cup, should visit bit.ly/ClockTowerCup to download the Betfair Clock Tower Cup race conditions, nomination and sponsorship forms. DIAR DOWN UNDER SOUTH AUSTRALIA WELCOMES DUBAI INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN RACES By Virginia Dodson for NARA Photos by Sharon Meyers

Warrawee Naaziq (nearest), Turingal Park Vassili and Coolinda Park Winston The association of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Shadwell Stud and South Australia is a long one which began 30 years ago when AT TALAQ won the famous Melbourne Cup in 1986. He was trained by Colin Hayes for Shadwell from his base at the renowned Lindsay Park Stud at Angaston, South Australia. Thus began an association between the Hayes family and Shadwell Stud Australasia which went on to produce another Melbourne Cup winner in JEUNE in 1994 together with 11 individual Group One winners. Today David Hayes and Tom Dabernig carry on this tradition. More recently Shadwell has been

involved in sponsoring and supporting the National Arabian Racing Association (NARA) to conduct Arabian Racing in Australia with the first races at Caulfield in 2011. Since then the races have been at the Gold Coast in Queensland but on the 12th of March were run under the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) banner at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, South Australia. All the runners came from interstate which involved a number of days on the road for the connections. It is to be hoped that with more racing on offer, South Australian breeders and owners will be encouraged to participate.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

17

Shadwell Stud Australasia generously sponsored not only two Arabian races, but the whole card of Thoroughbred races, all of which were named after Shadwell stallions. It is reported that the usual crowd of 900 patrons swelled to over 3,000 as a result of the array of entertainment on offer courtesy of Shadwell and the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC). The very popular Rainbow Painted Horses Competition was hotly contested by six local Primary Schools and with the Cultural Marquee offering henna tattoos, face painting and Middle Eastern food, together with pony rides, the day catered for all ages. The $20,000 DIAR UAE Arabian Plate over 1450 metres was run on a track rated a slow 6, a result of

very welcome rain on the preceding days. This Weight for Age race for Purebred Arabians was won convincingly by the grey gelding Justice For All MI ( WH Justice (US) x Mulawa Anastazia) in a time of 1:46:95. Justice For All MI was bred by the renowned Mulawa Stud, whose principals Greg and Julie Farrell were there, together with owners Scott and Fiona Green, to witness his second win this season. James and Mary Triggs, the owners and breeders of the second place getter, the eye catching bay stallion Aloha Thee Desperado (Aloha Telesmon x Aloha Abba) were also there to see him come over the line two and a quarter lengths back under Josh Cartwright. Both these horses were trained by Anthony Mountney.

Presentation for the UAE Arabian Plate In third place was another grey gelding Prince Charming FF ( Brumarbas Future (US) x Bremervale Charmed) bred, owned and trained by Kate and Doyle Dertell, principals of top show stable Future Farms of Victoria. He was ridden by champion South Australian hoop Jamie Lee Kah, who represented Australia in the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Championship in Oman last January. The mares Ethereal Park Solette (Solaris x Espiration) and Jupiter Samira ( Silver Somerio x Tantawanglo Elleenanaleah) were 4th and 5th respectively. Interestingly the runners placed in exact order of their saddlecloths, 1 to 5 respectively! The $30,000 DIAR Shadwell Arabian Stallions Plate over 1800 metres was a hotly contested thriller with the evergreen Warrawee Naaziq (Trystan Bobbi Dazzlah x Warrawee Naadiq) saluting in a time of 2:16:94. This

attractive bay gelding has had a stellar career with 5 wins to his credit, the most recent being the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Championship (IFAHR) 1600 metres at Caulfield last January. The margins of 0.8 of a length x a short head x 2 lengths made for a hard fought finish in the straight with Warrawee Naaziq coming from behind under owner/ trainer Kim Noble to snatch first place from Katie Spalding aboard the Noni Seagrim trained gelding Turingal Park Vassili ( Greengrove Vussja x Nikeii Nikita) owned by Vanessa Richardson. Third was Coolinda Park Winston ( Walidayt (US) x Coolinda Park Hello Dolly), trained by Anthony Mountney, ridden by Anneliese King and owned by Queensland couple Scott and Fiona Green. The Noni Seagrim owned and trained Cromarty Park Zataal ( Warrawee Nataal x Cromarty Park Zahra) with Josh Cartwright up was hot on their heels in fourth place.

AF Mathmoon (AE)

Following on from Handassa's victory in the final round of the Al Maktoum challenge, another runner in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum scored a second Group 1 victory as AF Mathmoon (AE) scored in the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi. The ten runner race was dominated by Shateh who went off in front under Harry Bentley ahead of AF Mathmoon and Paul Hanagan, with Abhar and Tadhg O'Shea keeping tabs behind. Abhar lacked the pace of Shateh in the straight, but AF Mathmoon dominated from 200m out, pulling

clear to win b alength and a half from Shateh, with Abhaar almost three length further adrift. Hanagan said "He is a really nice horse and stuck his head down to fight. Once we hit the straight I was always pretty happy we had things under control. He was certainly not stopping at the line as I was struggling to pull him up." This marked the grey's fifth win from six starts and he will now step up in distance in the Dubai Kayala Classic Gr.1PA.

DUBAI KAHAYLA CLASSIC Gr.1PA, Meydan

Dane O'Neill and AF Mathmoon (AE) win by a neck

The UAE racing calendar culminates in the spectacle that is the Dubai World Cup, now in its twenty first year. The top class international card opens with the premier event for Arabians, the Group 1 PA Dubai Kahayla Classic

– the prize fund for which was raised to $1,000,000 last year. This puts it on the same footing as two Group 2 and one Group 1 contests for thoroughbreds on the card.

23

Handassa (FR) working under Doric Binot

In the preliminaries the horse that had caught the imagination was Handassa. A striking first crop son of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Triple Kahayla Classic winner Madjani, he had posted a record breaking time when winning the third round of the Al Maktoum Challenge over course and distance at the start of February - providing his sire with his first Group 1 winner in the process, and his French based trainer Francois Rohaut, a first winner in the Gulf. During the track work sessions attended by the world’s media, he had attracted plenty of attention, his rider Doric Binot, said “You always like to believe in the horse

that you look after. But he is in great form and obviously won his race here at the beginning of the month. So we know he definitely likes the dirt.”

TM Thunder Struck (US) and Olivier Peslier go to post

In the absence of Sheikh Hamdan’s 2015 winner Manark (minor injury, back next season), he would be running in the first colours and ridden again by Paul Hanagan. Manark’s trainer Erwan Charpy did have a representative for the Sheikh in his old favourite Versac PY who had been denied victory in this event by the shortest of heads in 2013. New recruit was AF Mathmoon (AE), who had been running in the colours of his breeder Khalid Khalifa Al Naboodah until the New Year. Since finishing second to Thakif (FR) in the First Round of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.1PA 1m) on his debut for Sheikh Hamdan, the grey son of AF Albahar had won the Bani Yas (Gr2 PA 7f) and the Liwa Oasis (Gr1PA

7f); so clearly in good heart, there were questions to answer stepping up to a mile and a quarter. Also strongly fancied was Thakif, a homebred of HH Sheikh Mansooor bin Zayed Al Nayhan, who had had a busy season at the highest level. He had been second in the Jewel Crown in November, third in the Emir’s Sword in Qatar and also a winner of Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge and the HH President’s Cup. TM Thunder Struck representing Qatar’s Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani was also one of the top rated runners, he had won a Group 2 PA in Doha in December, but had not had things go his way when sixth in the Emir’s Sword.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

25

Thakif (FR) strides out in front of the field under Silvestre De Sousa

Two other overseas runners having their first starts in the Gulf were the Shadwell UK Derby winner Mahess Du Soleil, owned by Lisa Deymonaz and bred by her parents Mr and Mrs Kippen and a first Italian challenger, Lares De Pine, who had won in Toulouse and Milan. Originally trained by Jean Francois and Elizabeth Bernard he had joined Stefano Meattini in November. As the gates flew back from the 15 stalls it was clear that Handassa would be up against it as he was caught flat footed. Thakif went off like a rocket from stall 12 and soon headed TM Thunder Struck from his rail draw, though Olivier Peslier kept in close tabs on the chestnut all the way round in company with AF Tawaq.

Handassa meanwhile, was left languishing in the rear with a seemingly impossible task to make up the lost ground, he came wide, clearly not enjoying the kickback. Despite having raced in a similar fashion when winning his latest start, this was a much stronger contest. As they came into the final bend it looked like Thakif would record a pillar to post victory and looked to be extending his lead. However that extreme early pace was starting to tell and he showed signs of hanging, slowing suddenly and then veering markedly across the track towards the stands, throwing all chance of winning away and leaving the crowds stunned.

AF Mathmoon (AE) gets the better of TM Thunder Struck (US) at the line

Having looked to be running for place money, it was now all to play for, as TM Thunder Struck had kept his position on the rail and AF Mathmoon was the new challenger, squeezing him for room, but Dane O’Neill’s charge just had enough in hand to win by a neck. Thakif hung on for third, a length and a quarter behind, with a similar distance back to Handassa in fourth, who had shown plenty of grit to improve his position. Versac PY ran an admirable race in fifth, trainer Charpy afterwards saying that the dirt was too quick for his old campaigner that day.

both Sheikh Hamdan and his jockey O’Neil, though a homebred winner still eludes him. AF Mathmoon has now won six of his seven starts, finishing second on his only defeat. He joins an impressive role call as the sixth individual winner of this prestigious race for HH Sheikh Hamdan, who had previously won with Nivour De Cardonne (2000), Bopp Moon (2003), Kaolino (2004), Madjani (2005, 2006, 2007), and of course Manark (2015). It also marked a first victory in this race for a UAE bred horse and also a first Kahayla Classic victory for his trainer Musabah Al Muhairi.

Speaking after the race Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster said “That was great. One wasn’t quite sure when Thakif came across the course, if we had won with Mathmoon. He’s only a five year old too and he has made such rapid progress this year.” He continued. “For Khalid Al Naboodah his breeder, of course it’s wonderful and a big win for the UAE too. I don’t know what the plan would be, as he has had quite a lot of races this season, so he probably needs a break. I’m not sure about Europe, though it’s possible the Goodwood race could be a target and then bring him back here for the Jewel Crown in November.

“It was amazing how well Handassa recovered. He just didn’t help himself early on, the amount of ground he made up off that bend was impressive and the race was run in the same time as his win in round three. We’re delighted of course, it’s wonderful for Sheikh Hamdan to win another Kahayla Classic.” O'Neill commented."We got a nice break and Sheikh Hamdan said not to rush him. I landed a nice posiiton, just behind the leaders withut reallyhaving to do much and the race then panned out beautifully for me."

"When I turned in. I definitely though I could be second and to be fair to my horse, when he saw the other horse duck, he really wanted it and then the the trip was not a problem. It's fantastic, especially with the Boss here." The question of AF Mathmoon's stamia had been answered, O'Neill continued "I could see Handassa finishing on the outside, but really my horse just fought on. He so wanted it. It was a really great performance." This marked a notable milestone in the Classic's history with the winner being locally bred. A very emotional Khalid Khalifa Al Naboodah, his breeder, added. "I

am very proud. This means that we can show the world that we can breed Group 1 Purebred Arabian horses who can copmpete in the biggest race in the world. I would like to thank Sheikh Hamdan an dwish him all the luck with this horse."

CREATING RUNNERS Deb Mihaloff and Cre Run Farm

Deb Mihaloff receives her Darley Award for Best Breeder from Sami Al Boenain

Deb Mihaloff has been breeding and racing Arabians, with her husband Alan Kirshner from Cre Run Farm for over 30 years, she is also a Steward on the Arabian Racing Cup Board. Cre Run is an unsual name, where did it come from? Cre Run comes from ‘Creating Runners’, it is built on the philosophy of using racing as a selection tool to develop horses of athletic ability. Tell me about your experience of the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards... It is an incredible feeling to be part of the pageantry of the HH Sheikha Fatima Darley Awards and you think of all the

people who have been on that stage before you, it’s really an honour and is very emotional. It’s an honour to have had four Cre Run bred horses nominated. I have been Breeder of the Year before and it was a tremendous honour and achievement to win the Best Owner award this time. I think having the Darleys at the Dolby Theatre has been a dream come true for many people. Before that ever took place, I had always dreamed that it might be there one day and now it is, thanks to Lara Sawaya. It was an honour to be the first person on the stage to win a Darley when we first moved it to Hollywood. It was for Thess is Awesome when he won the Three Year Old category - of course he couldn’t have been more appropriately named - it was as if it was destined to be!

He is by Dahess, who out of In Awe, who was a Monarch daughter, she started running right after our leading money earning mare, Royal Atheena retired. We always thought that she would be better than Royal Atheena, but unfortunately In Awe got hurt at a young age, so she didn’t get the chance to really prove herself on the track. Thess Is Awesome also got injured at the start of his four year old year so he only ran once, but we let him heal and we brought him back slowly last year, winning the DIAR Open Stakes race in Texas in November. He was nominated for the Darleys again this year in the Older Horse category, of course he was up against So Big IS Better, who won. Big beat Thess Is Awesome in the Grade 1 Classic at Delaware Park, I’d love to be able to run that race again now

he is fully fit, but that’s racing. I was honoured to have him nominated and of course it was fantastic for him to win the HH Sheikha Fatima Darley Awards Stakes the very next day. It was a fabulous foal crop that year, because we had the mares, Our Princess and Royal Richess, both of whom were also nominated in the Older Mare category this time. Our Princess is by Nivour De Cardonne (who we used to stand) and is out of Monarch’s Princess (by Monarch AH). As a three year old she was nominated, despite never having won a race at that age, which of course was rather controversial. She came back at four and was undefeated in five races and then achieved her Darley Four Year Old Award of the year.

Tron Ku Tu at Wr'san in February this year

Royal Richess is by TH Richie out of Royal Atheena and she has not got a graded stakes win, but she was second to DC Willeys Song (Older Mare category winner) in a Grade 1 at Delaware. We had purposefully kept Our Princess out of that race to give Royal Richess her chance to win a Grade 1, because we only have one Grade 1 mares contest, but she ended up being second. The wonderful thing about all these individuals is that they are all out of Monarch daughters. Both the dams of Royal Richess and DC Willeys Song used to race against each other and there was quite a rivalry between them, so it’s kind of ironic that it is the same for their daughters. Our fourth nominee was All In All. She is also by Dahess, out of All Tu Sexy. All Tu Sexy never got to run, the full sister Tu For All is deceased, but she was a Darley Three and Four Year Old of the Year. When All Tu Sexy was a yearling, we found her in

the pasture with a broken neck, but she has gone on to be a fabulous broodmare and I’m so glad that we saved her because Tu For All and All Tu Sexy are by Tron Ku Tu. He was by the great Flaming Tron Ku who died prematurely in his first year at stud. He had equalled or bettered eight track records in the Unites States and Tron Ku Tu was the only son to stand in the US until he was sold to Wr’san, he was injured when winning his first race and so never raced again. It was lovely to see him at Wr’san earlier this year. All In All is by Dahess who we did represent for many years for his then owners, from when he first went to stud until Sheikh Johan bought him. All In All has beaten RB Frynch Broad and RB Frynch Brad has beaten her, but RB Frynch Broad has more races under her belt and I’m happy that RB Frynch Broad won. I did vote for her because she had more earnings and beat All In All twice.

I believe a horse only has so many races in them, and I also believe in supporting our closest meet, which is Delaware Park, so she was not shuffled around the US in search of prize money. They are very comparable fillies and, outside of All In All’s last race which should be ignored, that pair were always duelling it out. What is your current commitment to Arabian racing in the US? This year we will have 24 horses in training, we lease some of them out and they will go to different trainers, though we will probably have 18 in training for ourselves.

there was no financial gain from it - he’s a business man and so he needed to feel he wasn’t just throwing money down the hole! Lynn Ashby, who was Darley Trainer of the Year and also the International Trainer of the Year this year, is my trainer, I’m so pleased for her to be awarded again and for Travis and all the team with Awesome’s win on Saturday in the HH Sheikha Fatima Darley Awards Stakes. We are all looking forward to running in the Jewell Crown now.

We have to do this because we are so small now. In Delaware Park a trainer can only race two horses in a race unless it’s a stakes race, so in order to fill our races, because we are down in numbers, you’ve got to spread it out. So by leasing our horses, another person is helping to prove our breeding programme and to fill the races that we have. We lease them to people who are knowledgeable about racing. My husband Alan is 80 years old now, so when he goes to the races he likes to enjoy them, we have a wonderful group of friends that we lease horses to so that they get the thrill, as they don’t want to breed anymore. From my experience in breeding, that spans over 30 years, I find that for every 10 mares that you breed, one is going to abort, absorb or the produce dies before it gets to three years of age. Then of course you do have to try breeding to different lines which is a huge financial investment and not everyone can do that. I’m on my fourth generation of breeding stock which is athletic enough to race, even though the first horses were not raced. My husband thought the show ring was very boring and

I hope that this year’s season will be successful, Thess is Awesome’s win and that of Royal Richess’s, was a fantastic start. We try to support HH Sheikh Zayed Triple Jewel and I think that the $150,000 bonus for the highest point scorer in the series is better than rewarding a horse for winning all three races because we are so small. With two races in California and one in Texas it does make it very difficult for horses on the East Coast to support the races.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

39

Sponsors obviously want to see their races supported by the best horses in the country and to trailer a horse across country takes days, probably a $3,000 round trip, but, if you fly them out, it’s $30,000. When your racing is so small and your meets are going up against each other, with too few horses, until we can get a handle on that, it is making racing very difficult, it means it isn’t always featuring the best horses in the country in those races.

Royal Richess (US)

We hauled Our Princess to Texas and then flew her to California last year and then brought her back to Delaware Park to support our home meet, so she didn’t get to compete in the third leg of the Triple Jewel because we felt that financially it was too much. It is also important for organisers around the world to understand how the impact changing the criteria of races mid stream affects how owners make the decisions of where to run their horses. I love the concept of the Triple Jewel, but when the criteria was originally set up, you had to compete in all three races or you

would not be eligible. When that changed just before the third leg, it was very disappointing in our case, as we had to make a decision as to whether we would send Princess out there. She was going up against the boys and cost of travelling and the effect on the horse had to be considered too. She had been third and fourth against some of them, so we decided against it, though the last race would have been her better distance and she probably would have done better than in the previous races. She was invited at the last minute to go to Abu Dhabi for the Jewel Crown, but we already had her in Texas for a Grade 3 race, which she did win. That was important for her breeding future and that of my programme. If we are going to be professional and do this the right way, then we have to understand the importance of the Graded Stakes races, whilst recognising the need to participate with our very best horses to show those sponsors that we appreciate and respect what they are doing for us. So this year I have run Royal Richess (who won) and Our Princess (second) in the HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies race in Sam Houston in March. Now that the amateur riders are required to have more qualifications, I am delighted to support the series. I’m speaking as someone from the insurance industry and my first thought is always safety. I am still very concerned about the saddlecloths that are brought in for those races, as they are dangerous and caused the saddles to slip like So Big Is Better in Abu Dhabi. They should not be allowed to be made from this slippery fabric, it should be the same fabric as all regular saddlecloths are made from, cotton, and also the numbers should be able to be seen to help the announcer and the crowd identify the horses.

Nivisna (GB) recipient of the DA Adios breeding from ARO and Cre Run

What are your thoughts on the future of Arabian racing? There does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel for Arabian racing and both my husband and I feel that way now. The Middle East really does want to promote the Arabian horse, and is doing so financially through promotional activities that show the rest of the world this beautiful animal and also their culture and heritage. They are showing how much they love their Arabian breed and they are educating the world that they are more than a far-away place that people don’t understand and only hear about in wars and the like. We also have a commitment to racing in the UK, as Alan and I are founders in the Arabian Racing Organisation and though we don’t have runners, we have always tried to support racing there when we could. So for me it was a no brainer when we donated the cover to DA Adios at the ARO Awards in January, because we

wanted to show support to the HARC programme and to ARO too. DA Adios, is one of three HARC approved stallions we stand. He is the leading earner in the US and has been since he was retired from racing, winning over $600,000, a record has still not been broken. I am delighted that Anna Wallace will use it on her mare Nivisna, as I know the filly was a UK nominee in the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards (International) category, two years ago. So for us, all of this - the Darleys, the Sheikha Fatima race and the increase in support from the Middle East in breeding and racing could not have come at a better time, we are so very grateful. www.crerunfarm.com

HH SHEIKHA FATIMA BINT MUBARAK DARLEY AWARDS STAKES Grade 1 PA, Santa Anita Park

Thess Is Awesome (US) and Travis Wales fly past the line to victory

The inaurgural $100,000 HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes run at Santa Anita Park as park of the three day celebrations in California, more than lived up to the high expectations when Thess Is Awesome recorded an impressive pillar to post victory under Travis Wales for trainer Lynn Ashby and owener-breeders, Deb Mihaloff and Alan Kirshner.

This was a perfect finish for Ashby who, the night before, had recieved a record eighth Darley Trainer Award and also gone home with the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak International Trainer Award. Likewise Deb Mihaloff who had been presented with the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak International Best Breeder award.

Hot favourite Paddy's Day, who had beaten Thess Is Awesome in the Grade 1 PA HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan Cup at Sam Houston last month was unable to close down the leader and had to settle for second place, with Easter Man in third. Wales was delighted saying "The race

worked out the way I hoped it would, it's very difficult to have a speed horse on a lead, but this is his strength. I got the position I wanted, he was in his comfort zone and not under pressure. I could hear them coming behind me, but he is a class act."

Speaking after the race Ashby said "Oh it's so amazing, I'm humbled, but so surprised about winning the awards last night and now this. You work for it of course, but this horse is very difficult to catch right, he's on, he's off - everything has to be set up for him you know? "Travis did a nice job. When he made the lead and settled into that nice high cruising speed that he has, and he was so relaxed, similar to the way when he won up in Dallas. Travis waited and they started coming to him and he still waited til the quarter pole and then he asked him at just the right moment - if he'd have started riding any sooner, he'd have probalby ended up third. But the horse responded and he drew off. "He loved this surface. We knew when we shipped in and came out on to it he liked it. We have a much deeper type of track at

home, so I so pleased that he made it here, this is almost turf like this clay and I've always wanted to run this horse on Turf so going to Abu Dhabi will be great. We have a turf track at home and he's awesome on it. " An emotional Mihaloff said "Words can barely express what this win means to me. We knew he was special as a three year old and then he got injured and we took our time bringing him back, the last race in Houston you have to ignore as he fell comingout of the starting gate, so now he's redeemed himslef as to the fabuloius horse that he is. Our whole team, Lynn, Travis, Rosie and the rest of the crew, everyone has had faith in this horse. We thought his dam In Awe was going to be a champion but she got injured and had to be retired, so for us this is a dream come true, I'm ecstatic - This is awesome!"

QUEEN FOR THE DAY Interview with HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Best TV Presenter Laura King

Laura King receives her HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Award

How did you get into TV presenting? Through radio, though I’ve always been a written journalist, which I enjoy. I started doing a radio show around 2006 for Dubai Eye, called Horse Talk and later The Horses’ Mouth. Then the Dubai Racing Channel started up and a good friend of mine Brett Williams and I both went in and spoke to the then manager and made our case to be presenters and it worked! There wasn’t anyone else there at the time that had the right credentials so that obviously helped. Obviously you’re British, so how did you come to be in Dubai? I moved out to there when I was 21, for a job advertised on the Guardian website, for a racing and general sports writer, which turned out to be Race Week and I worked for them for 18 months.

What would you say to someone looking to start a similar career? I’d always wanted to be a sports journalist, either racing or football. I felt that racing had slightly less competition at the time. So I would recommend that they should get a degree in something, but not English, which I did! Try and do Politics or History or something that teaches you a bit about the world and then a journalism course is really helpful. Given my time again I would probably do Broadcast Journalism. But just read. Read everything you can, read all the racing pages every day and watch every racing programme or documentary, because you can’t beat background knowledge. If you’ve got hours of airtime to fill, what you’ve learned about the form will only get you so far, and you never know what the director is going to throw at you, so it all helps

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

47

What do you enjoy about the job? I love live TV, I love the fact that once you’ve said it, you’ve said it, and there’s no going back. There’s no proof reading like you get with writing for magazines. Interviewing is really enjoyable, going out in the mornings, meeting someone new, trying to find the human interest story, which is something they do incredibly well in America. In the UK we’re a lot more reserved and it’s the same with the UAE. The rags to riches story, even if it is just about the horses, is always compelling for the viewer. Being present at some of the big races when history is made is always a thrill, and the access that you can get to some of the equine stars is also fantastic. What do you find challenging? The most challenging aspect of the job is that we now have many, many, more broadcasters, which of course is fantastic for racing, but logistically it makes it more difficult, because everyone wants to interview the connections at the same time.

Obviously they will want to talk because they’ve just had a winner, but they don’t want to repeat themselves ten times! I also face a challenge of trying to get racing covered on television in what I consider to be a beautiful way – I’m not big on graphics covering up a screen for example. What is the coverage of Arabian racing like in the UAE? We’re lucky in that Arabian racing in the UAE isn’t regarded as a second class citizen, I would like to see more Arabian racing at Meydan as we only have about seven races there a year. When I first started out, at Nad Al Sheba every card started with an Arabian race and I would love to see that brought back at Meydan. In my view I would give them a whole race meeting. I love them to bits, they have so much character, and it’s a bit like National Hunt racing in the UK, where the horses go on for years and you can develop a real affection for them.

Presenting live on Dubai World Cup night this year THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

There are three bodies really trying to build it, there’s HH Sheikh Mansoor with his Global Arabian Festival, there’s Shadwell with the Dubai International Arabian Races and also now we have Qatar and their Triple Crown. So at the highest level there is a lot of money behind Arabian racing and I’m sure they can continue to build it, I think people will eventually cotton on, but there seems to be a tremendous battle that is harder than it should be, for Arabian racing to be accepted outside of the Gulf.

I think the value of including Arabian racing to a thoroughbred card is that it is something different, I don’t think it should necessarily be staged either first or last on the card and I do really enjoy them.

different names, and gives a chance to the lesser known jockeys and connections and that’s really important. It’s not going to go away so we need to embrace it. What impact do you think the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival has had worldwide? From my perspective, the biggest achievement that the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival has had, is that Lara Sawaya has got the Arabian racecards back into the Racing Post, because that is the first place that certainly everyone in Europe goes to and that is a huge step forward. You see the Festival banners everyone where you go, like at the Dolby Theatre yesterday and all through Abu Dhabi and at racecourses in Britain, so everyone who casually passes by can see them which is great for racing as a whole. The impact on Arabian racing has been tremendous and long may it continue. The support of women in racing is also fantastic. I’ve never felt that I’ve had any trouble progressing in the sport as a female, but I know it is tough for some people in the industry around the world trying to work their way up, such as jockeys, racecallers and the like and the fact that they are able to have that little bit of extra exposure through HH Sheikha Fatima’s support is wonderful. To win the award this year is of course a great honour and it has been a fantastic experience to be here this weekend.

Another crucial point is it brings in

Catherine Fortune, winning by the narrowest of margins. She has booked her place in the November final of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship. Smith's Mlolshan, who won under Danish jockey Sabina Gammelgaard last year, could only manage fourth place for Germany’s Laura Giesgen on this occasion.Third spot went to Al Rabda under Denmark’s Rikke Sorensen.

Alice Mills and Kuheilan Al Adiyat just get up by the shortest of margins

Mills commented “I had an absolutely brilliant race and got up to win in a photo. It is the horse’s first win in two starts and he was great,” she said. “I've been a bit quiet of late as I had to take a few weeks off to recover from my couple of heavy falls. No harm done was just feeling the effects,” Mills, also a jump jockey, had said before the race. “When I was asked to represent Great Britain in the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship race I was pretty excited. Now this win has made it a memorable trip to Bahrain,” the winner said. His Majesty King Hamad deputed National Guard Commander Lt General Sheikh Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa to

attend the races . The race also was attended by President of Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al Khalifa, dignitaries, senior officials, members of the diplomatic corps and a large number of racing fans. Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR) along with Ali Moosa of Dubai Equestrian Club and attended and gave away the trophies.

TURNING THE PAGE ARO 2015 Champion Lady Jockey Page Fuller talks about her experiences and her hopes for the new season

Did you always want to be a jockey? It all started through hunting, as I loved to ride fast, and then my parents were always really keen on racing; my mum had a point to pointer and Dad had raced cars so it all progressed from there. I never had any success in Pony Races, but I still loved going fast and we got given a nice old horse, who was very safe, for pointing and I rode out for a while for Alan King when I was still at school. I found it hard to combine University with race riding, so I gave it up to concentrate full time on it now, I can’t believe it’s now a reality, I am actually fulfilling my dreams, in the next three days I have three rides on

three different racecourses against professionals. Did you aim to for the Ladies’ Championship from the outset? I really thought it was a possibility going into the start of the season that I could be Champion Lady Jockey with ARO, I knew that Adam had a nice team, obviously there was Kamikaze to look forward to and Whisper of course, so I knew I had those horses behind me and they certainly helped me win the championship. The thought of getting 10 wins to beat Steph’s (Gandola) total last year, seemed hard to match though!

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Do you think riding Arabians has benefitted your career as an Amateur?

coaching from John Reid, but the Equicizer lessons are expensive and there is only so much you can do on one.

I think the Arabian racing has really helped my development as a jockey because it really sharpened up my riding. It takes you back to basics, without being under quite the same pressure as riding thoroughbreds on the Flat and I was lucky enough to be on good horses when I started with Adam – which also helps. Everyone says that jump jockeys seem to suit Arabian horses, they are quite similar in how they run for you. It’s definitely tightened me up and given me so much more race awareness.

The last few months I’ve been helped by David Crosse once a week, which has combined the Equicizer with running, cycling and rowing. We do a circuit, we watch the races and he also helps me with my relationship with trainers, so it’s not just about physical fitness. He’s been so helpful, I do pay for it, but it is not so expensive. Just knowing that there is someone there to support you, has been great, so he will tweet if I’ve had a good ride - it’s like having a proper sports coach.

What have you done to improve your performance?

Being involved with the HH Sheikha Fatima Lady Riders Series must have helped too?

Jamie (Snowden – Thoroughbred trainer and Fuller’s employer) has been very supportive from day one, he’ll go through my rides with me and pick up on the tiniest details with me on how I can improve, which has really helped. I have had some

Sheikha Fatima races have been fantastic. The first one I rode in was my first ride on the Flat, which was at Newbury when I came second on Sophia for Beverley Deutrom. I had been into Adam’s a couple

of times to ride by then and he suggested I rang Sarah Oliver (HH Sheikha Fatima Series Jockey Co-Ordinator) which is how I got to ride at Newbury. Adam saw how much I enjoyed it, so he put me on Whisper the next weekend and of course she won and it all took off from there. Then last season going to Belgium in the summer, that was quite a last minute thing, I only had a few days notice. I also picked up a spare for Beverly in the Group race as well, because I was already going to be there. So winning was incredible as I qualified to ride in the finals. Going out to ride in Abu Dhabi was amazing, it is so well publicised, its brilliant for a jockeys’ profile. It’s a great experience to walk the track with all these jockeys and apprentices from other countries who all have amazing stories to share, just spending time with others form different cultures is so worthwhile.

Also to follow in the footsteps of Steph Gandola and Rachel King to be nominated for the Sheikha Fatima Jockey Award is a great honour, it was a real shame I wasn’t able to go to Hollywood. The 2016 Season is about to start, what are your thoughts for this year? I really want to improve on last season, I had 25 rides and I think Adam has a great team assembled for this year. I’d love to ride for James (Owen) and Phil (Collington), I did have a few rides for Gill, so would hope I might pick up some light weight spare rides for HH Sheikh Hamdan again this season. When I rode El Adjban to win for Gill in 2014 I was going up to ride out for her every Friday, but Newmarket is quite a drive on my day off so it is harder to do now. Obviously I am busy at work (Page is Amateur jockey for Thoroughbred trainer Jamie Snowden), but I try to get down to ride out at Adam’s when I can.

Whisper seems to enjoy me riding her she’s such a game little mare, Adam is so good at preparing her, I just have to do what I’m told! She certainly didn’t want to be passed at Newbury, it was such an amazing feeling. I’m looking forward to riding Kamikaze again too. Chepstow worked perfectly for him, Zayin Zachilles just set it up perfectly for us and going for home we had them all off the bridle, so I could just kick on. Adam and I knew if the race went to plan, it would be difficult to beat him and that proved to be the case, it was unbelievable to actually get a race to work out how you needed it to, especially carrying a penalty from the weekend before.

everything every time you go out there. Just knowing that you have people to support you helps as well because riding is all about confidence and Arabian racing plays a big part of that for me, I’m sure it one of the main reasons why I am where I am now. I feel that I will be even stronger after spending the winter riding over jumps and maybe I was a bit novicey on some of the babies at the end of last season, so hopefully we will all improve in 2016 and I can be a contender for the championship again.

Every rides counts as part of the learning experience and you learn something

2016 Shadwell Super 7 Preview GARY CAPEWELL ARO Commentator AGHSAAN 5yo m Al Jakbar - Sophie Du Loup Was odds on when beaten on debut last year, however it may turn out the winner is pretty smart. That said she made no mistake second time out at Hereford winning a maiden comfortably. She then won on her handicap bow in a competitive race on Dubai Day. She might not end up being the easiest to place but she falls into the could be anything category

and still has scope to improve a fair bit more, going up in trip could also be an option on breeding. AL KABEER 4yo g Al Jakbar - Zormania Beat a subsequent wide margin maiden winner on his racecourse debut last year and wasn't seen after. A mark of 88 looks fair enough and despite his inexperience could easily be a candidate for the race won by Aghsaan last year. Another that falls into the could be anything category.

Aghsaan (GB) goes to post on DIAR under Paul Hanagan THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Synergy (GB) in the paddock at Newbury

AWZAAN 5 g Al Saoudi - Ester Du Paon It took a while for the penny to drop for this horse who won the first race of last season beating then stable companion Aghsaan. But he was well on top at the line. Met with a setback and wasn't seen afterwards. Given what Aghsaan did subsequently, an opening mark of 82 seems fair enough and is another that could be ideal for the 0 - 90 at Newbury on Dubai Day. NAAR 6 m Madjani - Magie De Faust It was no disgrace to finish behind the more experienced Aghsaan on her debut last year. She made no mistake next time out in maiden company before seemingly not handling the rain softened ground behind Aghsaan at Newbury. She finished the season off in

another very competitive Lingfield handicap on her final start in which she was a never nearer fifth over a mile. Her dam was a Group winner over 10 furlongs so it would be no surprise to see her step up in trip and she's still lightly enough raced to expect improvement in her second season. SYNERGY 5 m Jiyush - Sing Me A Song Still a maiden, but has shown enough in her five starts to think she's capable of winning races. Her best run last year came when she was narrowly beaten over 7 furlongs at Newbury, she perhaps didn't go on as expected after that. However with another winter under her belt, she's surely got a race or two in her, perhaps the 0-75 at Newbury on Dubai Day - a race that her half sister Shadiya - won could be a long term target.

ZAAHY 4yo c Al Jakbar - Ranya Du Croate Met with a setback last season after shaping with plenty of promise as a juvenile on his racecourse debut at Taunton. Picking up a maiden should be straight forward enough on that evidence and could easily be capable of picking up other races afterwards. ZAYIN ZODIAC 5yo h Dahess - CS Comete A winner twice last season on racecourse debut at Wolverhampton and in handicap company at Windsor later in the season. He was slightly outclassed on his final start in the Derby, however he's lightly raced enough to expect more improvement this campaign and connections also

have the option of stepping him up in trip it's interesting to not his half brother Zayin Zachillies has won over 12 and 14 furlongs in his career.

SUHAIM 10 h Dormane - Seceryna A winner of the Dubai Day handicap in 2014 but off last season, well handicapped and looks like he will pick up some more useful points. JOHARA BINT SHUWAIMAN 5 m Shuwaiman Al Bahrain - Princess Proudd Smart looking mare with plenty of ability, sure to do well this season with another year of strengthening mentally and physically , as most Arab mares tend to be better in their second season. NICSAR DIAMONDJUBILEE 4 c Madjani - Jumah

Very nice young colt and eye ctaching runs especially when placed in maidens at Hereford and Windsor, not too high in the handicap and sure to progress, half brother to smart performer CS Jumali, and multiple winner Samauring Zayin and Amyzing Zayin (so nearly Zayin family). AL KABEER 4 g Al Jakbar - Zormania Impressed when winning his only start at Hereford, sure to progress and improve and beautifully bred. There will be a three day transfer window from midnight 22 May (after the Taunton meeting) to midnight 25 May, where two horses may be exchanged in your teams to allow for late registrations with the ARO office.
