Al Jakbar(FR)

AL JAKBAR TO BE AVAILABLE VIA AI IN 2017 After two successful racing seasons, Shadwell Arabian Stallion Al Jakbar will from now on be available to breeders via AI with frozen semen. With only a few runners worldwide, Al Jakbar has reached a remarkable ratio of 87.5% of individual winners per runners. He sired his first winner in 2015, when Al Murjaan won the Garizim Memorial in Sweden. In 2016, it is his daughters who have grabbed the limelight. Firdos won easily at Al Ain in March. At Newbury, Jamaayil impressed when winning the first race of the prestigious Dubai International Arabian Races meeting and has subsequently won the French Arabian

Breeders Challenge Sprint (Gr2 PA) in Toulouse in October. Aghsaan won the ARO Cup (Gr3 PA) in June, before finishing second in the Hatta International Stakes (Gr1 PA) in Newbury and in the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup (Gr1 PA) at Sandown in August. Richard Lancaster, Shadwell’s Stud Director commented: “From a limited number of opportunities, Al Jakbar has proven to be a valuable sire with his progeny winning in different countries. British breeders have sent mares to him for the first time this year. As his sire, Al Sakbe, passed away this summer, we are happy to enable European and UAE breeders to use one of his best sons.”

French-bred, Al Jakbar was trained by François Rohaut who always held him in high regard, saying. “Without doubt the best son of Al Sakbe, with great conformation and a great temperament. He was a real miler with a formidable burst of speed and the brilliant winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Longchamp.” Al Jakbar is out of Essaada, dam of multiple Group performers such as Bint Belady (Al Asayl Championship, Gr.3), Essaana (Prix Razzia III, Gr.3), Tornador (La Coupe Goffs, Gr.1) and Speed Tornade (Emaar International Stakes, Gr.2). Al Jakbar stands at Beech House Stud (Newmarket, UK). His 2017 nomination fees are: £500 for natural cover (1st January Special Live Foal) and €800 for AI with frozen semen.

ALL CHANGE AT ARO The final meeting of the Arabian Racing Organisation season was also the last meeting for ARO Racing Manager Amanda Smith, who was leaving after six years as part of the ARO team. In recognition of her time as both Administrative Assistant and more recently Racing Manager, she was presented with an original oil painting by Lisa Miller SEA, of one of her favourite horses, the Royal Cavalry of Oman's Razen.

Bahrain and had recently been part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations at Windsor, so we were very honoured to have them parade at our season finale. “I am particularly pleased for the Royal Cavalry of Oman that their loyal support of Arabian racing was rewarded with such a good meeting. The Essex crowd loved their hospitality tent, the dates and henna tattoos were very popular. “I will be very sorry to leave ARO; it has been a wonderful six years. However, I look forward to watching the sport progress and develop in the coming years.”

Genny Haynes, ARO Director, offered ARO thanks saying. “The ARO Directors would like to express their thanks to Amanda Smith and wish her every success in the future. We welcome Gemma Cobb who takes up this challenging and rewarding role and look forward to an exciting 2017.”

ARQANA PUREBRED ARABIAN SALE 2016 Saint-Cloud

Top lot at €260,000 - Maolie (Mahaab x Mendra) Following their annual Purebred Arabian Sale, held as part of the 'Arc Weekend' in Paris, the Arqana sales company reported solid gains with an increase in turnover of 27%, which was close to the 2007 record figure. The 2016 Sale figures saw encouraging growth on the previous year with a cumulative aggregate of €3,138,000, up 27% from 2015, and an average price of €42,405, which was a 20% increase. The number of lots presented was also up, to 116 from 85, though the clearance rate was down to 63.8% from 82.35%. Emirates Bloodstock principal Faisal Al

Rahmani was the leading buyer on behalf of Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed, securing two very well bred two-year-old fillies, spending a total of €838,000 on six lots. At the head of his shopping list was Maolie (lot 31), a daughter of Sheikh Mansoor’s stallion Mahabb and full sister to champion Manark, winner of the Gr.1 PA Kahayla Classic - among four victories at Group PA level. She is also a full sister to Mestor, who won the 3yo Championship at Abu Dhabi and last year's sale topping colt Mont D'Or. Offered by Jean-Marc de Watrigant’s Haras de Mandore, the attractive chesnut commanded a closing bid of €260,000.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

13 Al Rahmani also signed two dockets at €180,000 for Herrmin (lot 7) and Saida De Monlau (lot 40). The former, also from Haras de Mandore, is by another of Sheikh Mansoor’s flagship sires in Munjiz and out of the talented Djesabelle, who is already the dam of the Gr.3 PA scorer Sahabba. The second dam is the blue hen Cherifa, ancestress of such luminaries as Djebbel, Madj Al Arab, Mushrae, Cherazade, Djourdan etc.

The latter, also by Munjiz, was offered by Haras de Thouars on behalf of Haras de Monlau and is a full sister to the champion Al Mamun Monlau, winner of three Group 1 PA races including the Dubai Kahayla Classic, as well as of Princesse Monlau. Also bought by Al Rahmani was Munowra (lot 20), consigned by Haras du Saubouas and yet another daughter of Munjiz. The half-sister to Gr.1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 scorer Nieshan was knocked down for €150,000. Haras de Mandore was behind three of

Al Shahania was back in action later on, shelling out €170,000 for Mizabelle (lot 56), from the stellar draft of Haras de Mandore. The unraced six-year-old mare is a full sister to the aforementioned Saida de Monlau, being by Munjiz out of Djesabelle, hence another granddaughter of the influential Cherifa. She was offered carrying her first foal by leading sire Dahess. Gérard Larrieu of Chantilly Bloodstock Agency signed for the top two lots in the horses in training section, who followed one another into the ring. The four-yearold colt Caid De L'Ardus , a son of Mahabb winner of three of his seven starts to date, commanded €150,000 while Wild Card entry Tefkir (lot 85), champion in THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Mahaab topped sire's statistics for the sale with an average of €115,333 for the six lots sold (aggregate €692,000).

Hoyeau commented: “We are thrilled with the results of the Purebred Arabian sale, which represents a longstanding win-win partnership with AFAC [the French Arabian Association]. We work together to promote the sale and the sale contributes to the finances of AFAC. "We would like to extend our thanks to the breeders, who entrusted us with top quality horses and were duly rewarded. QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULAINS Group 1 PA

Motrag (FR) and Jerome Cabre leaving it to the last minute to beat Zikreet (FR)

This year’s #QPAT weekend (as it was christened on social media) for the Purebred Arabian racing enthusiast began as normal at Saint-Cloud for the Arqana Sale. The following day the same venue played host to the two juvenile Group 1 contests, the Qatar Total Arabian Trophies, first for colts and then for fillies both over 1m2f. The colts’ event was won by the narrowest of margins by Motrag (Amer) from his stablemate Zikreet (Dahess), both trained by Thomas

Fourcy for Al Shaqab. Azhar, who had won the Prix Tidjani in July, finished third. Motrag had won at La Teste in July before placing third in the Prix Cheri Bibi (Gr3 PA) at Toulouse at the beginning of September, also over a mile and a quarter. On that occasion he finished less than two lengths behind the winner Al Monteze Monlau, but at Saint-Cloud Marie-Ange Bourdette’s colt was a well beaten tenth.

17

Motrag is a full brother to the four year old filly, Jeyoosh, who finished second to Naziq at Chantilly the following day. She has since gone on to win a Group 3 at Casablanca’s International meeting. Fourcy, commented: "I am pleasantly surprised by Zikreet because I thought he had his limitations. For Motrag, I worried a little because his jockey was at him throughout the race. He is a horse that goes and goes. Finally, his finishing kick brought him to win. He is certainly a colt of the future. Since the beginning of the year, I knew that I had good three-year-olds in the yard, even if everything did not necessarily go well. They are starting to be good now and I hope that all this will continue next year. "

QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULICHES Group 1 PA

Samma (FR) and Olivier Peslier stretch clear for an impressive win on only her second visit to a racecourse

The fillies contest was won in fine style by Samma (Majd Al Arab), who needed little urging from Olivier Peslier to draw clear of her rivals to win by two and half lengths, ahead of Djaikiri Safinat and Diva Du Paon. This was an impressive first win on only her second start for the Alban de Mieulle trained filly in the colours of HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani. Her dam Noorah (by Djelfor) is a

half sister to Nizam and Danie Du Cassou, dam of Dahess. Her trainer de Mieulle was very satisfied with the victory of his filly saying: "She galloped with her head in the air, but her dam was like that too. She showed average ability in the morning and we were very disappointed during her debut in La Teste " [seventh, beaten 10 lengths by Djaikiri Safinat].

He continued."Samaa has been afraid of the other horses, she had never wanted to come near them. That's why we put the blinkers on her and she has made progress. Like all my horses, she will leave for Qatar on 6 October. Since arriving in Qatar, she has quickly acclimatized, winning on her first start in a conditions event over a mile on Turf.

QATAR TOTAL ARABIAN TROPHY DES JUMENTS Group 1 PA

Naziq (FR) and Jean-Bernard Eyquem put up an impressive frontrunning display at Chantilly A change of venue for the weekend action was brought about by the ongoing rebuilding of Longchamp racecourse, the demolition crew having moved in the day after last years’ Arc. Chantilly had been selected as the substitute venue and despite a sizeable reduction in capacity for the crowd from 60,000 to 40,000 the quality of the equine competition was undiminished. Saturday’s Qatar Total Arabian Trophy

Gr1PA for four year old fillies’ was won by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed’s Naziq (Mahaab), trained by Elizabeth Bernard for HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Given a very enterprising ride by Jean-Bernard Eyquem, she set a blistering pace, and with no-one to challenge her, she won by four lengths. She is a half sister to Loraa (Mawood) who won the same contest at Longchamp in 2014 and a full sister to Fazah, who was fourth in 2012.

Naziq continues the Bernard dominance of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments, as she has won it six times in total, including four times with her husband, the late JeanFrancois. She credits her husband for encouraging her to be patient with the three-year-olds, in particular fillies and not over-racing or working them too hard.

She described Naziq as “skin and bones” and is always concerned for her well being, however “she is a fantastic filly with a big heart and she likes to front run, with a lot of speed and a very long stride.” Eyquem had no doubts about his fillies’ ability to stay in front saying “It was very easy, I know perfectly the Above: Elizabeth Bernard goes to saddle Naziq (FR) Below: Naziq (FR) and Jean-Bernard Eyquem return after their win

QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP Group 1 PA

Chantilly, France

Al Mourtajez (FR) and Julien Auge win a second Qatar Arabian World Cup Gr1PA - this time at Chantilly On Sunday despite the presence of the world’s top rated Arabian, Al Mourtajez, there was still a field of 14 challengers for the Qatar Arabian World Cup Gr1PA, including Gazwan, who had beaten him in the HH Emir’s Sword Gr1PA in February. Last years’ top rated filly, Sylivine Al Maury was also present, along with Prada T and Sir Bai Yas who had filled the places behind Al Mourtajez in the first leg of the Doha Triple Crown – the Qatar International Stakes Gr1PA, run at Goodwood in the UK, at the end of July. Whilst the record of the prep-race

Qatar Cup (Prix Dragon) winners in the main event is not strong, Al Mourtajez easily asserted his superiority and won as a horse of his undoubted class should – by four and a half lengths, eased down. The places were filled by two four year olds, Mehdaaf Athbah (Amer), who put up an improved performance to be second, beating Tayf (Amer) by a head. Tayf had been supplemented following close two seconds in the French and UK Arabian Derbys, whilst last years’ second, Gazwan, had to settle for fourth place.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

23

His trainer Fourcy was once again impressed by the performance of Al Mourtajez: "It's amazing! The more he runs, the more he impresses me. He is a champion, an exceptional horse. Now the Triple Crown no longer scares me! I have no more words to talk about him. Today, Julien did not even need to hit him ." Regular jockey Julien AugĂŠ clearly enjoyed his latest win with the son of Dahess saying:" It's a crack, there are no other words. He had only one fault in the past, it was that he was a little hot. He did not like to be challenged by the other horses. Thomas settled it incredibly. He is the best trainer for these horses and he proves it again today. Even if my horse had to gallop outside the leader of Julian Smart, I managed to resume Al Mourtajez, which would not have been possible last year and he has incredible class to finish so well. I think I would never find a horse like that again. I win Group 1 races on exceptional racetracks thanks to him, Chantilly,

Goodwood, Dubai, Qatar ... There is now so much money in the races reserved for purebred Arabians that I really challenge any Thoroughbred to win as much money as my horse, except for the Arc winner of course. I love this horse. "

CHELMSFORD CITY ARO SEASON FINALE & SULTANATE OF OMAN RACEDAY Parma T strikes gold at the Arabian Racing Organisation's final meeting of 2016 , which also witnessed the UK's first ever Heritage Arabian Racing Club race, soley for HARC approved horses

Alazeez (GB) and new ARO Champion Lady Jockey Joanna Mason

The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) Season Finale, which for the first time, was combined with the popular Sultanate of Oman Race Day was a resounding success. The feature event, The Royal Cavalry of Oman Gold Final went to Parma T, ridden by Morgan Winstone and trained by Christopher Bull for his father Wayne. Of the 85 horses declared over the nine race card at Chelmsford City Racecourse, 73 were Purebred Arabians which was the largest number for an ARO domestic meeting all season.

In front of a crowd of over 800, the card opened with a 14 runner maiden, won by Alazeez and Joanna Mason for ARO Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trained by James Owen. His Highness concluded the meeting having won his fifteenth ARO Owners Championship, whilst James Owen took over the mantle of ARO Champion Trainer from Gill Duffield (who retired last season) and Joanna Mason recorded her first ARO Lady Jockeys Championship.

Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster commented. “Everyone at Shadwell is delighted that Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum is once again leading Arabian racehorse-owner in this country. This is a wonderful reward for Sheikh Hamdan's support and commitment to Arabian racing. It is even more remarkable as this has been achieved with predominantly homebreds.” “I’m proud of Alazeez, it was a really good performance and he’s exciting for next year.” Owen said. “I’ve really enjoyed the season. Obviously I’d like to thank Sheikh Hamdan and all my owners for their support and I can’t wait for next year.” Mason also praised her experience with ARO saying. “I’ve had really good

opportunities, riding for all the different owners and of course His Highness. It has been amazing and I’m looking forward to 2017.” The Royal Cavalry of Oman Bronze Final was split into two divisions, the first was dramatically won in a photo finish by Simon Walker on Callymay, from Kayclaire ridden by Charlie Price, both owned and trained by Delyth Thomas. Later, a win in the ARO Season Finale Thoroughbred Stakes on Stuart Shefras’s Windsor Rose secured Simon Walker’s tenth ARO Jockey’s Championship. Charlie Price confirmed his position as ARO Champion Novice Jockey when winning the Royal Cavalry of Oman Silver Final on another of Thomas’s runners, the veteran, Noble Athlete.

Price was delighted saying. “Once I had a couple of winners, the Championship was my aim. I’d never sat on a horse until I went to the British Racing School when I was sixteen. I’ve been at [Thoroughbred trainer] Tim Vaughan’s for two and a half years and I’m now his amateur jockey, I had my first ride under rules for him a few weeks ago. He’s been very supportive and was really impressed that I had seven rides today. I’m looking forward to riding Arabians again next year.” Thomas, who has enjoyed a prolific season, was runner-up in the Owners Championship and third in the Trainer’s Championship and was rewarded by Callymay securing the Purebred Arabian Championship. Having taken a while to come to

herself, she scored three wins on the bounce at the start of the season for Walker and produced a gritty performance to win again on her final start. Runners-up on three wins apiece were her stablemates Kayclaire and Noble Athlete and also Vindetta for Linda Cross. Confirming early season promise, The Sultanate of Oman Handicap went to Athbah Stud’s homebred colt Dossar Athbah. Abdul Moniem Ahmed, Racing Manager for Athbah Stud and the representative of HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmad bin Abdulaziz, was delighted. “I’m so happy for this performance, I will discuss his future with His Royal Highness and hope he will be back next year.”

The second division of the Royal Cavalry of Oman Bronze Final produced another close finish in which Robin Pfeiffer aboard Just The Ticket edged out Simon Walker on Jamaahir. Pfeiffer, riding for his wife Tina, explained that the race didn’t quite go to plan saying. “He got quite badly hampered early on, lost a good position, but all credit to the horse for getting up to win.” The penultimate contest was the UK’s first ever race exclusively for Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC) horses. Fittingly, as the HARC scheme has been specifically designed to support the grass-roots of the sport, it was won

by owner-trainer-jockey, Teresa Gavin on LB Farrah, who is also the leading UK HARC horse of 2016. The Royal Cavalry of Oman Gold Final produced a victory for another small stable as trainer Christopher Bull and father Wayne who owns Parma T, only have one horse. A model of consistency all season, she won with a bit in hand on her last start and it was no surprise to connections to see her win again. “I was pretty confident” said Christopher. “It’s the best we’ve had her, she’s been going really well at home and it just goes to show that a little bit of hard work pays off.”

“It’s just me and my boy.” Said Wayne. “Christopher rides her out and I feed her and groom her and so on. I’d like to thank [thoroughbred trainer] Dai Burchell for the use of his gallops, it’s been a big help to us.” The meeting was attended by the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Director General Sarhan Salim Hamed-Al Zeidi, Yahya Sulaiman Al Mahrazi, Head of Administration Affairs and Salim Al Hakmani who is a familiar face in UK Arabian Racing having ridden and trained the Omani horses for several years. They were presented with a gift on behalf of ARO’s trainers for over ten years of support of Arabian racing in the UK.

Karimah (FR) and Francois Xavier Bertras win from Diva Du Paon (FR)

The Francois Rohaut-trained Munjiz filly got the better of pre-race favourite Diva Du Paon and Christophe Soumillon to win by a neck with Muneera and David Michaux in third. of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs. Bertras completed a double on the Philip Colington trained Jamaayil for HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in the French Arabian Breeder's Challenge Sprint (Gr2 PA). HH Sheikh Mansoor’s Ziyadd finished second under Jean-Bernard Eyquem. Commenting on Karimah’s win Bertras said, “She is a great filly with a lot of potential and this is her second successive win in two career starts. She is sired by Munjiz, which is currently one of the leading stallions in Europe." The 39-year-old Frenchman also praised the performance of his second winner saying. "Jamayil showed her class in a quality field and she is also one for the future.” Ms. Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the Int’l

Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) and Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR) said, “It was a fittingly thrilling race that ended the Festival’s Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup series which will now culminate in the Euros 1.2 million Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Crown Jewel-IPIC (Group 1) – the richest race in the world for Purebred Arabian horses on November 13, 2016 in Abu Dhabi. “Today’s races were of the highest order and a large crowd had turned out for the meeting. We will now focus on the ‘One World, 6 Continents’ extravaganza of the Festival which will see the world’s Purebred Arabian racing fraternity in attendance in Abu Dhabi from November 7 to 14, 2016,” she added.

Ms Lara Sawaya with winners Thabit (FR) and Kersley Ramsamy

Thabit (Munjiz) and Mirna (Mahaab), owned and bred by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, finished 1-2 in the final qualifying leg of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship (IFAHR) race at the Tarbes racecourse in, Pau, France. Apprentice jockey Kersley Ramsamy from Mauritius steered Thabit to a narrow win over Mirna (Robin Weber from Germany aboard), adding more success to the Wathba Stallions and HH Sheikh

Mansoor. The Charles Gourdain-trained Mirna made the running in the 1500-metre race with Argonaute under Anaelle Mekouche following, whilst Ramsamy had to overcome a wide draw on the Ferederic Sancez-trained Thabit. The Mauritian however moved up and joined Mirna and Weber and battled throughout the final furlong before edging past to win the Euros 20,000 race. Argonaute kept on for third, with Gjobat Bahar under Oman’s Yahya Bin Juma Al Hamdani in fourth.

SUPER For 2016, the initial teams were required to include a minimum of two four year olds, no unraced horses and two overseas trained horses were permitted, with the horses selected from the ARO list of registered runners. A number of teams included the following horses who did not qualify under those criteria: Alhaader, Dossar Athbah, Elyassat, Fatinah, Hau Kola, Istiqlaal, Jamaayil and Yeskan Du Cayrou. Any points scored by these horses did not qualify during the period 17 April - 29 May. After the seven day transfer window (after Taunton on 22 May) most of those horses were then qualified as they had run at least once in that period - only Dossah Athbah and Istiqlaal remain not qualified after 29 May. In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the number of fully qualified runners from the start of the competition will be taken into account. Points are scored in all ARO domestic races from April 17 to September 25, as follows: 10 points win 5 points second 3 points third Bonus points: 2 for a Group win and 1 for a Premier Handicap will also be awarded.

Last year's joint winners Alex Cairns and Matt Johnson were still in the top four but it is Delyth Thomas who has had a remarkable season as both owner and trainer who will receive the Shadwell luggage at the ARO Awards in January.
