INTERNATIONAL RACING FESTIVAL Istanbul, Turkey Held over two days in September, the Festival at Veliefendi Racecourse includes two Purebred Arabian Pattern races on the Turf and All Weather

Handassa (FR) and Francois-Xavier Bertras go to post at Newbury on Dubai Day

IFHAR Trophy 3yo+ Gr 2 PA 2100m Dirt Veliefendi HH Sheikh Hamdan's Al Hibaab was looking for back to back victories in this, having won last year's contest, however he was never better than mid division throughout and it was left to the other Sheikh Hamdan runner Handassa to maintain His Higness's good record in this contest. An attractive son of Madjani out of good racemare and producer Ziva, this

is a noteable success for his sire. Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster commented. “Handassa’s win in Turkey was very impressive. He came back and showed his proper form after a disappointing race in Newbury. He shaped up his form and will go for the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe day.”

Malazgirt Trophy 3yo+ Gr 1 PA 1600m Good Veliefendi There was further homebred success the following day in the Group 1 Malazgirt Trophy, this time for Dr Al Nujaifi with Ghazwa. Though foaled in France, she is a product of Dr Nujaifi's Iraqi bloodlines and was most impressive coming from off the pace and accelerating clear in some style. Though they were coming back to her at the finish it was no less impressive. Three lengths away in second was Mouheeb, locally owned and trained but bred by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani, he had won the Gr 2

PA International Ali Riza Bey Trophy at this track in June and had been fourth in this last year. A neck behind was Vulcain Du Clos, a winner of the conditions event of Dubai Day, he also held off the challange of three time Zabeel Stakes winner, Al Mouhannad in fourth. The Damien de Watrigant trained mare holds entries in both the Qatar Arabian World Cup and the Breeders Challenge Sprint at Toulouse in October.

QATAR CUP (PRIX DRAGON) Group 1 PA - Longchamp Runn as part of Arc Trials Day at Longchamp in preparation for the Qatar Arabian World Cup on 4th October

Qatar Cup (Prix Dragon) 4yo+ Gr1 PA 2000m Soft There was something of an upset in the Qatar Cup when SAMIMA, bred and trained by Karen Van Den Bos for the Royal Cavalry of Oman, took control of the race from the outset and gamely clinched victory by a neck. This was a hot contest which saw Al Shaqab's superstar Al Mourtajez lose his unbeaten record -Thomas Fourcy's charge was a disappointing fifth. Antoine Hamelin proved to be an exemplary judge of pace, the mare travelled smoothly in front, keeping to the rail, whilst Al Mourtajez stayed wide and though perfectly positioned to challenge in the home straight, his

trademark acceleration was lacking on this occasion. Lorra looked the biggest danger, pressing Van Den Bos's charge in the straight and the two mares drew clear, but she was held by Samima. Perhaps the biggest hard luck story was TM Thunderstruck who got boxed in and had to go around horses for a clear run. He was doing all his best work at the finish and the line came a stride too soon. The distances were a neck and a nose and as they all hold entries for the Qatar Arabian World Cup, it promises to be an exciting renewal. The entries also include last year's winner Djainka Des Forges, and the Triple Crown seeking Sir Bani Yas.

WINDSOR REVIEW

Storming for home - Storm Troupour (US) and Steve Harrison

Al Qurn Beach Maiden Stakes 3+ PA 6f Soft The Sultanate of Oman Raceday is one of the most popular fixtures of the ARO season and though crowds may have been slightly down on last year there was still a good family atmosphere on course. Windsor’s unique track layout meant that there were four 6 furlong contests and whilst the forecast heavy rain never materialised, the overcast conditions never threatened to put a damper on the day’s events. The meeting opened with a six furlong maiden and provided an ideal opportunity

for Kathy and Paul Smoke’s homebred colt STORM TROUPOUR to get off the mark at the fourth attempt. He had been placed on his debut in the States and in the UK when a respectable second to Katonahotinroof MHF at Newbury. Sent of the 5-4 favourite, he had them in trouble with a furlong to go and won going away for Steve Harrison. A first UK winner for his owner – breeders and also a first UK winner for his trainer Stephane Leveque who started training earlier this year from his base in Newmarket.

Musique Du Soleil (GB) and Steve Harriison give Peter Hammersley his 50th winner as a trainer and his first for the Kippens

Al Kasfah Spring Restricted Maiden Stakes 3+ PA 6f Soft A restricted maiden followed, again over 6f and produced a turn up when the odds on Warko Du Cayrou failed to shine. Ducking out to the left and losing his position at the start, he never looked at ease, he could only manage third behind interesting newcomer MUSIQUE DU SOLEIL and Niscar Diamond Jubilee. Peter Hammersley had not long had the filly in his stable, having been in pre training in France for her ownerbreeders Mrs and Mrs Kippen and their Du Soleil Stud. She certainly knew her job, taking it up

at the halfway marker, she stuck to the rail and ran out a three length winner from Niscar Diamond Jubilee, with Warko Du Cayrou a further two and a half lengths back in third. It is three years since they have had a runners in the UK and Mrs Kippen was pleased with her filly's debut win. "We couldn't find a race for her in France, so we decided to have her and Harmonie Du Soliel home and they went straight to Pete's a month ago. We raced her dam, who is also the dam of Tidarbret. We also have Mahess Du Soleil with Thomas Fourcy who we hope will come over for the Derby."

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

18

Salalah Juvenile Stakes 3yo PA 6f Soft

Only three runners for the juvenile event, which saw another odds on shot turned over. However time may show that Cheik Roque, who had looked so impressive when winning on his debut, had run into a good thing in WOROOD, who was in receipt of all the allowances. Sabah, also in the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s colours set the early pace along with Athbah Stud’s Cheik Roque, who went to the fore after the first furlong.

However with three furlongs to go Worood had drawn alongside and appeared to be travelling well within herself as she eased to the front in the final quarter mile and won as she liked for the days’ sponsors. Cheik Roque hung across the course in the closing stages and having been quite stirred up in the preliminaries this run maybe best forgotten.

19

Kao Kat MHF (US) gives Steve Harrison his third win of the day

Muscat Handicap Stakes 4+ (0-85) 6f Soft With the stalls still at the 6 furlong marker the first handicap of the day at last brought a result for the odds on punter as it fell to top weight KAO KAT MHF. Another US bred colt, he had looked one to follow when winning on his seasonal bow on Dubai Day, however having enduring a nightmare journey he had disappointed on his next start overseas.

Back in the UK and with Steve Harrison on board, he didn’t have it all his own way as Mazaaya fought all the way down the home straight, only crying enough in the last few strides to go down by a length and a half. Reliable yardstick, Syrah Gris, was four lengths behind in third.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

20

Zayin Zodiac (FR) makes if four out of five for Steve Harrison

Ras Al Beach Handicap Stakes 4+ (0-70) PA 1m Soft Peter Hammersley was mob handed in the mile handicap and having recorded his fiftieth win as a trainer with Musique Du Soleil earlier, he gained another milestone by training the first three home. ZAYIN ZODIAC was quick to assert for Steve Harrison and was never headed. Kermit The Frog who has to be held up, briefly looked a capable of challenging, however he could make no impression on the winners advantage and only just held second from Unity Belle.

A winner first time out, Zayin Zodiac had struggled in slightly better company and appeared to relish these conditions and the ease in grade. Hammersley was delighted with his horses' performances and all being well he will most likely take his chances in the Shadwell UK Arabian Derby, which has been the long term goal set by his owner-breeder Paul Simmons.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

21

Al Bustan Beach Conditions Stakes 4+ PA 1m Soft Another victory for an odds on shot came in the mile conditions event, though RADAMES may be considered fortunate as the second Jaldi Karo had drifted off course in the home straight and may well have finished a lot closer than the length and a half recorded. However Radames was not winning out of turn as he had been running with credit in Group events all season

and this was a deserved success nonetheless. Bellone Du Croate who had been a very consistent performer in France this term was a length away in third, she has been placed in four of her five runs and the form of this race looks solid.

22

Vindetta (GB) gets off themark under Phil Colington

Alsawadi Beach Handicap Stakes 4+ PA (0-55) 1m Soft The longest race of the meeting concluded the day. All the runners having previously met at Bath in July, the market felt that it was Ultimate Force’s opportunity to gain revenge on Senor Dublcheck for being beaten by a nose on that occasion. However he had other ideas, bronking to the start where he got hung up in the stalls tape, unshipped Steve Harrison, who was hopeful of a five-timer, and had to be withdrawn. This left the way clear for VINDETTA to finally get off the mark at the fourteenth time of asking. Considered a handicap ‘good thing’ at the start of the season, she had been running well

without winning. Filling the third spot in the race at Bath she had been tried in a variety of headgear and the firsttime visor seemed to work the oracle here. A steady pace was set by Callymay and the field remained closely bunched until the last three furlongs when Phil Collington got to work on Vindetta and went ahead of Top Trip, coming over to the stands rail in the process. Vindetta stuck to her task well, putting four lengths between her and Top Trip. LB Farrah who had raced more centrally, was two lengths adrift in third.

HEREFORD REVIEW

Bon Baiser De Faust (FR) coasts to victory under Phil Collington

Wathba Stud Farm Cup Conditions Stakes 3 & 4 PA 1m1f Good The Arabian Racing Organisation’s last trip of the season to Hereford stayed dry with occasional sunshine. All three fixtures there having been generously sponsored by the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival. The opening contest was a formality for BON BAISER DE FAUST who won it from his stablemate Saayif Al Arab in a hack canter. There was no disgrace for

the runner-up though, as Bon Baiser De Faust is now a three time winner this season and had been Group 1 placed in France last term. He holds an entry in the Shadwell UK Arabian Derby to be run next week at Newmarket. Saayif Al Arab is entitled to come on for his debut experience and it is likely there will be more to come from him next season.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

25

Wathba Stallions Maiden Stakes 3+ PA 1m4f Good

The maiden stakes over a mile and a half yielded the biggest field of the day and Zamhareer and Niscar Diamond Jubilee set off at a fierce pace in company with Samir. However Zamhareer soon went a good three lengths clear and the field began to get strung out in his wake. It was unlikely that he would maintain his advantage and his run came to an end rounding the home turn as Samir took it up under Max Kendrick. Stalked by the evens favourite Sunbulla, with Aurora Forta just in behind, they had broken away from the remainder entering the straight, but Samir who was entitled to improve

on his debut second, always had the edge. Sunbulla was unable to challenge, whilst Aurora Forta stayed on for third. Giving Max Kendrick his first winner under ARO rules, he said afterwards. "I've just turned twenty and I'm an amateur jockey for Ben Case, I've also had ten winners pointing and three under rules. Hopefully I can make a career as a jockey and will take out my conditional license. "I've been riding work for Mrs Duffield during the season and have enjoyed my experience of Arabian racing so far."

Noble Athlete (FR) records his thirteenth win with Simon Walker

Wathba Stud Farm Cup Handicap Stakes 4+ PA (0-60) 1m Good

Time was running out for the veteran Noble Athelete to score this season, however given a positive ride by Simon Walker, he was always up with the pace. Although the free running Top Trip and Shuwaiman Al Kebir duelled for the lead, once rousted by Walker, Noble Athelete was perfectly positioned to take control of the race once they had run out of steam.

victory. Syrah Gris was 10 lengths behind in third but clear of the rest.

However this ended up as match between the Sheikh Hamdan pair of El Salaam and ASHRAAF.

"He's done very well to win here twice over seven furlongs and he probably wants a little bit further."

Steve Harrison made his move on El Salaam entering the home straight and it briefly looked as though he has timed his run to perfection, however Phil Collington had other ideas on the top weighted colt, who proved to have the superior speed and just chinned his stablemate on the line for a neck

Of his other rides he said "Bon Baiser De Faust was a formality against a maiden and I was pleased with Sunbulla. She needs the experience and they went very fast early on."

"Ashraaf's win was a very good performance and off of top weight too" said Collington after the race.

Tiger Lily (GB) and owner, trainer, jockey, Teresa Gavin

Wathba Stud Farm Cup Handicap Stakes 4+ PA (0-40) 1m Good

The nine furlong handicap gave further course success for owner-trainerjockey Teresa Gavin who piloted Tiger Lily to break her maiden on the fourth time of asking. Gavin is now also only one win away from losing her claim. She kept Tiger Lily handy throughout and went to the front on the home bend, as long time leader Roches Du Cayrou began to fade, though was not yet beaten. Samauring Zayin pressed her all the way down the straight but was no match for the winner. It was very nearly a notable training triumph for Peter Hammersley as

Samauring Zayin, returning from a career break as a broodmare, was only a length and a half away in second. She looked well in the paddock beforehand and it was a cracking performance after over 1000 days off course. Speaking after the race Gavin said "This is my second win as a trainer. I've been riding since I was eight years old and involved with Arabian racing for about ten years. I got Tiger Lily when she was six months old and broke her and brought her on myself."

Maghazi (GB) and Simon Walker win by five lengths

Wathba Stud Farm Cup Handicap Stakes 4+ PA (0-75) 1m Good

The meeting drew to a close with another mile and a half contest. HH Sheikh Hamdan’s Sharaf, a confirmed stayer, was sent off favourite, whilst Zayin Zachilles, a winner over this trip and further was also strongly fancied, along with MAGHAZI who was stepping up in trip. Despite his stablemate Attila De Rouaisse setting the pace, Maghazi was quite free in the early stages but was always in close attendance throughout in the hands of Simon Walker. Rounding the home turn, Walker set

sail for home and the grey gamely stuck his head out, shaking off his only challenger Zayin Zachilles with a furlong to go. Maghazi drew clear for an impressive five length victory over Zayin Zachilles, with Vindetta a further seven lengths behind. Speaking after the race, his trainer, Beverley Deutrom said “He’s my favourite of the whole stable. I’m very pleased with him and he will go to the Dubai International Arabian Races Gold Final at Huntingdon and if he came out of that ok, maybe the Wathba Stud Farm Cup at Lingfield, as it’s so close to the yard.”

Kao Kat MHF (US) and Steve Harrison stride to post at Windsor Wathba Stud Farm Cup Premier Handicap 4+ (0-90) 1m AW Lingfield 22-09-2015

An extremely competitive handicap. At the time of writing Maghazi, Tokhil and Man Of Dreams have yet to run at Huntingdon in the Dubai International Arabian Races Gold Final. So the shape of the race may change a little. In particular a victory for Maghazi, should be noted who has the current leading apprentice jockey Tom Marquand booked. His two other stable companions are also very interesting, of that pair Kao Kat MHF is preferred. He's gone up 16lb for two victories here in the UK,

sandwiched in between them was a good effort in Group company in Belgium and further progression could see him go very close. Altello is a fascinating UK debutantand arrives here with some decent form in France, having finished 5lengths behind Meeyur in the Prix Damas Gr 3 PA in at Dax at the end of May. twelfth trainers title has a strong hand with three of the 11 runners. Of those three, Jabal Aly and Naar look the pair to concentrate on. They finished fifth and sixth respectively when last seen in a mile handicap at Newbury. Naar is the lighter raced of the two and is capable of better than she showed on her handicap debut that day. She might not have handled conditions at Newbury on that occasion. The same can also be said for top weight JABAL ALY who has also been lightly raced this season, but enough to think there is still plenty of improvement to come and he's the pick in a very trappy contest.

BIRD'S EYE VIEW ARO SEASON FINALE PREVIEW GARY CAPEWELL

Phil Collington and Sunbulla (GB) go to post at Hereford

2.00 Shadwell Maiden Stakes 3+ PA 1m2f An interesting maiden. The two juveniles Selketh and Zahwah make plenty of appeal. Zahwah is a well bred newcomer from the yard of three time Qatari Champion Trainer Jassim Al Ghazali, as she is a half sister to Top Rated Arabian Djainka Des Forges and a full sister to Gidwa. Selketh improved dramatically from her debut effort to finish runner up in a Group 2 contest at Newbury in July. At

this stage of their careers it will take a decent effort to win over 10 furlongs. Emiraaty is respected as a second string for Champion Trainer Gill Duffield, but the pick is SUNBULLA for the same stable. She didn't quite get home over a mile and a half at Hereford last time out and the step down in trip here looks ideal.

Steve Harrison and Ultimate Force (FR) before parting company at Windsor

2.30 Dubai International Arabian Races Bronze Final 4+ PA 1m1f Most have these have met each other at various stages of the season. Tiger Lily showed a good attitude to get off the mark on her most recent run at Hereford and the slight rise in the weights won't stop a decent showing here.

A chance though is taken on ULITMATE FORCE who wears cheek pieces for the first time. Unlucky when getting caught up in the stalls tape, unseating, bolting and subsequently withdrawn at Windsor, he can make amends here and get off the mark at the fifth attempt.

With Top Trip in the line up, this is likely to be run at a respectable pace which will suit Callymay, Crown Of Salona and Senor Dublcheck.

Vetlana De Faust (FR) parading before finishing sixth in this years' HH Emirs Sword in Doha, Qatar

3.00 HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stakes 3+ PA 1m2f Three strong candiates from the Gill Duffield stable for His Highness. Aljawaaher and Azizi are stout stayers and neither will want this to become too tactical, so perhaps the former is likely to make the running. Tawaazun won impressively at Newbury on her seasonal debut before finishing sixth in a Group 1 contest at the same track more recently. She has some top class form in the book and running in the first colours, with Phil

Collington on board, is obviously the stable choice. However VETLANA DE FAUST's form is slightly better and she tops them all on ratings. With an entry in the Qatar Arabian World Cup she can take this en route to Longchamp on her UK debut.

Gelliwen (GB) goes to post at Hereford under Will Pettis

3.30 Dubai International Arabian Races Silver Final 4+ PA (0-80) 1m1f An extremely competitive contest. This is Syrah Gris's easiest task for quite some time and if he stays, he's certain to go close. Noble Athlete has sound claims, as do Kermit The Frog and Whisper as they've all had decent seasons, whilst the maiden Kallista is less exposed than some of the others and is still open to plenty of improvement.

However a chance is taken on GELLIWEN who seems to thrive at this time of the season. She's won the last two renewals of this race (at Wolverhampton last year and at Hereford in 2013) and she's now back down to last years' winning mark.

38

4.00 Dubai International Arabian Races Gold Final 4+ PA (0-80) 1m1f Those towards to the top of the weights usually fair very well in this race. Tokhil will prefer todays extra distance and has the ability to go close since receiving some respite from the handicapper. The first time blinkers are an interesting addition to Spirited Game, however stamina could be an issue and was sixth in this last year at Wolverhampton.

second in this race last year), Man Of Dreams (last), Sharaf and Zayin Zachillies (third) also have to be considered. The selection goes to MAGHAZI who won this race off a one pound higher mark back in 2010 at Warwick. Has been running well all season and comes here on the back of a confidence boosting victory at Hereford two weeks ago.

Whilst the consistent Maazin, (who was

Samauring Zayin (GB) on the way to the start at Hereford earlier this month with Steve Harrison on board

4.30 Shadwell Arabian Stallions Handicap Stakes 4+ PA (0-40) 7f Wahiba has shown enough early pace in three maiden runs to date to suggest she'll be competitive now in handicap company. Just The Ticket has been brought along gradually and like Wahiba, might improve further, having just missed the frame on his handicap debut at this level last time out.

So SAMAURING ZAYIN is the pick. She returned from the paddocks to finish a respectable second last time following a 1091 day absence. The first time cheek pieces may also help her here, as all her win and place form is over further.

Whilst Eau Jember will find this easier, he is a long standing maiden. Roches Du Cayrou has been a grand servant, who has been very consistent, but the trip is a concern.
