About The Art League

“By nurturing the artist, we enrich the community.” The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community. The Art League is a multifaceted, 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization that strives to “nurture the artist and enrich the community.” Operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes since 1954, The Art League’s mission is to develop the artist through missionbased education, exhibit opportunities, and a stimulating and supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community.
Community Support and Outreach 703-519-1741 Donors drive our outreach programs and accessibility initiatves. Supporters of The Art League’s annual fund ensure that visual arts are present in Alexandria as a catalyst for personal enrichment, social engagement, and expressive catharsis. We have a mission to reach under-served audiences through hands-on experiences in the visual arts. The Art League reaches out to the economically disadvantaged and the physically-, intellectually-, and emotionallychallenged in our community with the following programs.
IMPART (Injured Military Personnel & Art) In collaboration with Fort Belvoir’s Warriors in Transition Unit and the USO, The Art League provides recently injured military personnel with visual arts experiences developed for personal enrichment, improving motor skills, relaxed social engagement, and expressive catharsis.
Space of Her Own (SOHO) An award-winning partnership between The Art League and the Alexandria Court Service Unit, SOHO serves at-risk 10-year-old girls and enriches the Alexandria community. SOHO improves participant’s personal lives through artistic expression, develops meaningful and often long-lasting relationships between mentors and youths, and ultimately reduces juvenile criminal activity in the City of Alexandria.
Geri Gordon Scholarship Established in 1998 to celebrate former Art League School Director, Geri Gordon’s remarkable vision and 20 years of service and dedication, this fund provides need-based art scholarships for students of all ages and backgrounds. Additionally, internships are available in our gallery, our school, and our development office throughout the year. They provide excellent work experience in the visual arts and meet college internship requirements. For details, please contact the relevant department.

Join as an Artist Member The Art League Gallery is a member gallery providing artists with the opportunity to have their work judged by esteemed local arts professionals, and to compete to exhibit their work in one of the largest galleries in the Washington metro area. The Gallery hosts monthly juried shows, solo artist exhibits, student/faculty shows, and special exhibitions and fundraisers. Membership is open to all.

The school office is located on the 2nd floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC), room 216. The office is open 10:00am–5:00pm, Monday through Saturday. Classes are held in the TFAC and the Madison Annex.
Classes The Art League School is a non-accredited institution and is open to all. Day, evening, and weekend courses are offered in virtually all fine arts and many fine crafts. Our instructors are professional artists. The school offers youth classes for ages five through seventeen, and camps throughout the summer. Please call the school office or check the website for more information.
Workshops A rt League instructors, and distinguished visiting instructors, offer concentrated week or weekend sessions in specific media, techniques, and subjects. Student/Faculty Show The public is invited to attend our annual Student/Faculty Show in The Art League Gallery, February 18–March 1, 2015. The reception will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2015.
Artfete: Open House & Holiday Party The public is invited to attend our annual open house and holiday party at the Madison Annex, December 5, 2014.
Holidays Classes do not meet on Thanksgiving, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, or July 4. These holidays, or any additional days designated by the instructor, will have make-up dates.

School Policy

No student will be denied admission on the basis of race, sex, or ethnicity. However, because of the need for group cooperation in classes, The Art League reserves the option of refusing admission to any person deemed incompatible with any class group due to disruptiveness, or for any impediment to the learning process of the group as a whole. Safety precautions and proper use of art materials and chemicals are rigorously practiced. Please use discretion when registering for classes, as The Art League cannot be held responsible for adverse reactions that may arise in some individuals. If you are pregnant, or think you may be, please consult a physician before registering.
Take the Yellow or Blue Line to the King Street Station; then take the Alexandria Dash Bus #2 or #5, eastbound. For the Madison Annex, stay on the bus until the Madison and North Fairfax Street intersection. For the TFAC, leave the bus at the King Street and Fairfax Street intersection then, walk 2 blocks east on King Street to North Union Street. Turn left on Union Street, and the TFAC is a half block down on the right. In addition, the free King Street Trolley runs every 15 minutes from the King Street Station to Union Street, seven days a week from 11:30am–10:15pm.

To Register 1. Browse the catalog or website to find classes, workshops, or camps. Ongoing additions and corrections are published online. Please check www.theartleague.org/ school for updates. 2. After making your selections, you may enroll online using Visa, Mastercard, or Discover, or enroll by mail, fax (703-683-0167) or in person. If by mail, fill out the registration form and send it with your payment made out to The Art League School at 105 North Union Street Alexandria, VA 22314. 3. Upon receipt of your registration form and payment in full you are registered, unless the class is full or cancelled. If the class is full or cancelled, you will be notified and are entitled to a full refund. You may begin classes in any term and register for workshops at any time. Late registrations will be honored for available classes only. A transfer fee of $20 will be assessed for each transfer from one class to another, unless the transfer was a result of an administrative decision. All transfers must be made before the third meeting of the class.

Parking For students in the TFAC classrooms, there is inexpensive evening and weekend parking at the City Hall lot at 108 North Fairfax Street. For students in the Madison Annex, free parking is available after 6:30pm at Colonial Parking on 267 Montgomery Street.
The Store

Our store is located in room 217 of the TFAC and is open 9:15am– 4:00pm, Monday through Saturday, while classes are in session. The first two weeks of each term, extended evening and weekend hours are 6:00pm–8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and 10:00am–4:00pm, Sundays. For the remainder of the term, evening hours are 6:30pm– 7:30pm Tuesday and Wednesday. Hours between terms are 10:00am–4:00pm Monday through Saturday. The store may close for lunch.
Art Supplies
The Art League Store sells supplies at a discounted price to League students and members. Every effort is made to stock items requested by instructors, as well as popular materials for the fine artist. Our staff of professional artists can guide you in your selection. Most class supply lists are available in the store. Due to our large enrollment, we are unable to email, fax, or read lists over the phone. To receive a class supply list by mail, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the store. John Blee – Acrylic
No class refunds are given unless we are notified by the Friday prior to the start of the term (see calendar on the inside of the front cover of the catalog). No workshop and camp refunds are given unless The Art League School office is notified at least ten days prior to the start of the camp or workshop. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $20 that is included in the tuition.

Sketchbooks Stephen Procopio Through practice and demonstration, participants learn to develop more coherent and engaging sketchbooks. A portion of each class is spent examining and discussing artwork, including the masters e.g. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and contemporaries e.g. Eleanor Dickenson, James Jean, Craig Thompson. Gesture Drawing Alex Beck This class provides beginning/intermediate students with an understanding of gesture drawing. Working from models, students learn to draw using contour, rhythm, mass, and shape. Participants also learn how to draw quickly and more efficiently. Students learn to use the various hardnesses of graphite pencils on many kinds of papers. The first seven weeks cover techniques such as blending, powders, washes, erasing, and line in expressive and realistic styles. Participants use their own photos and props or those supplied by the teacher. The last few weeks may be devoted to personal projects. This class is suitable for all levels and provides a great opportunity to work with a versatile draftsman and designer at your side. Supplies are inexpensive and uncomplicated. Previous drawing experience is required. A $10 materials fee, payable to the instructor, covers papers.

Language of Line Lisa Semerad Applying the academic concepts and emotional possibilities of line, this course offers a vital step for artists who would like to “loosen up.” Line variations in contour to hatching/crosshatching, line systems, texture, movement, color interplay, and as an element of overall rhythm and design are covered. Paper varieties and surfaces and their effects on various media are discussed. Suggested materials: graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, pastels, acrylic paint, or ink.

The foundation of strong imagery is design—a vital element to all art forms. Students learn to recognize and control movement within the picture plane through study of shape, value, pattern, line, texture, and color in multiple formats. Composition & Design Applications Lisa Semerad This course builds on concepts learned in Composition and Design Fundamentals. Students use representation, depth, transparency, movement, narrative, and color to create more inventive, emotionally powerful, cohesive works of art. Students enjoy success applying theory and technique across a range of media, subject matters, and styles. Weekly concepts are applied to personal subjects or teacher’s assignments. Group critiques enrich the class. Previous experience in individual chosen media is required. Acrylics, oil bars, oil and chalk pastels, and abstract artists are welcome. Sorry, no oil paint.

Introduction to Artistic Anatomical Drawing Thanasi Papapostolou
Students learn the academic process used in the old French Academy. Participants study the sight-size method of measuring by working from a plaster cast. The class then expands their study by painting in monochromatic and limited palettes from the live model. Model fees are extra.
Artistic anatomy is considered by centuries of artists and art academies to be the indispensable bedrock of the figurative arts. This class introduces students to the basic principles of figure structure and anatomy. Progressing sequentially, students learn to “see” anatomical form and render it effectively. This course introduces basic illustration styles and techniques to aspiring fashion illustrators and designers. Students explore historic and contemporary fashion illustrations for inspiration. Miniature painting has a rich tradition from medieval illuminated manuscripts to the Renaissance, and from India and Persia to Rome. The small format encourages the artist to create something intimate and personal. Gouache (opaque watercolor) is the perfect medium for this type of work. Gouache is a heavy, opaque watercolor paint. It is easier to handle than transparent watercolor because it can be continually reworked, or “corrected.” Students learn techniques and use of tools and materials while the instructor provides examples, designs, and source materials for paintings. Different surfaces and formats are explored and demos of the medium are included.

The difference between Photo Realism and Trompe L’oeil is one of composition. This class includes instruction on those differences, techniques for making texture, and creating a perfect illusion. New students work on an introductory project encompassing various techniques. Experienced participants have a choice of independent projects or projects designed by the instructor. Acrylics are used to speed up the process of learning but experienced artists are encouraged to use oils. Any media may be used.
This class focuses on the two most important traditions in classical painting—Disegno and Colore. The first half of the term looks at the sculptural Tuscan approach of Disegno which involves a developed grisaille and subsequent layers of glazed paint. The second half of the term features the painterly Venetian practice of Colore which relies on direct application of paint. Model fees are extra.
Intermediate Landscape Painting: Building Skills and Confidence Sara Linda Poly This indoor class covers choosing subject matter when working from photos or sketches, achieving a strong composition, and progressing to a better painting. Nancy McIntyre Silk screen printing can fill a page with color in a single stroke, or build layer upon transparent layer of intricate detail. Summer Art Camps Art camp provides a wonderful way of introducing children to several forms of visual art. In our basic art camp, each day brings a new project which may include drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture. Specialty camps focus on immersing the children in one medium. Camps come in all-day and half day sessions over a five-day week. Tuition for the all-day camps includes a supervised lunch hour. Create a custom all-day session by combining a basic camp with a specialty camp. (*Combinable camps are denoted by an asterisk.*) When creating your own all-day session, there is an additional $35 per week charge for the supervised lunch hour. The Art League Ceramics Studio is located at our Madison Annex in Old Town, Alexandria. The studios are large, bright, and well equipped, easily stimulating creativity. Open studio time allows students to practice and expand their skills outside of class. Students interested in a complete clay experience may participate in our assistant work-study program and have the opportunity to learn how to mix glazes, recycle clay, and load kilns. Participants in the assistants program are eligible for tuition reduction. Please call The Art League School for details. The Art League offers daytime, evening, and weekend classes accommodating beginners and those with advanced skills. Students may choose to make pieces on the potters’ wheel, handbuild, or take a sculptural approach to their work. Most instructors can teach all methods of construction. Additional workshops are available during the year for students to work with well known, established artists from around the country. The Art League fires the majority of its work at cone six oxidation in electric kilns at no additional cost. The facility also fires with gas reduction, raku, or wood kilns for an additional fee.

Discover the magic of firing pots in a wood kiln! This is a unique opportunity to experience the entire process of firing a woodfired salt kiln as pots are naturally decorated by the flames, wood ash, and salt. Students begin by loading the kiln on Saturday morning and allowing it to preheat through the night. The main firebox is lit early Sunday morning and finishes Sunday evening. Along with a lot of shared food and conversation, Blair and Allison place a strong emphasis on their glazing, stacking, stoking, and salting techniques. Participants may bring 12–18 pieces. Mystery Solved: Facial Reconstruction Joe Mullins Ever wondered how experts recreate a face when the subject may have been dead for thousands of years? The Art League’s jewelry program covers various aspects of designing and creating art jewelry and small metal objects. Each class is suited for beginners, unless noted. The studio is equipped with an extensive assortment of tools and machines. Personal tools and supplies are discussed during the first class. Silver Jewelry the Easy Way—Wax Modeling Gretchen Raber This fast and fun approach allows students to design jewelry with simple tools and inexpensive materials. Participants explore various wax working and model making methods used to create rings, earrings, pendants, or bracelets from start to finish. Completed models are sent out to be cast in metal. Finishing techniques are covered upon return of the cast work.

Hard wax carving techniques are one aspect of model making in jewelry design. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, students explore techniques such as layout, carving hollow forms and mirror images, texturing, faux granulation, and flame finishing. Although models are sent out for completion, upon return, finishing techniques are explained. Prior use of basic jewelry hand tools is prerequisite.
Basic enameling techniques for beginners are taught every term. Advanced students may work on their own projects with teacher’s instruction in specialized techniques including cloisonné and the etching techniques of bassetaille and champlevé. There is a $20 lab fee for all enameling classes; this covers the cost of studio consumables and enamels, not metal.

Pound It Out—All Things Hammered Michael Brehl Students transform sheet copper, silver, or gold into hollow forms; a cone, cube or sphere. Beginner and intermediate metalsmiths learn to master one of the oldest and most widely used stonesetting techniques: bezel setting. A bezel is a thin band of metal, used to hold a stone or object onto a piece of jewelry. Proper forming, fitting, soldering, and finishing are demonstrated. Students fabricate one to two bezels and set something into them. Students may bring materials to be set, including cabochon stones, wood, plastic, tile fragments, etc. Inexpensive cabochons are available for purchase from instructor. Students are encouraged to bring drawings or designs with simple forms for projects.

Introduction to Kiln Glass: A Hands-On Experience

This class introduces beginners to the technical and artistic side of the medium of fused and slumped kilnformed glass. The instructor demonstrates glass cutting, explains the steps of a firing schedule and discusses the importance of glass compatibility and annealing. Students experiment with design possibilities using a wide variety of frit, stringers, confetti, sheet glass and iridized glass in the Bullseye Glass palette. Participants create a set of example tiles, a thick color study tile and two fused and slumped bowls. Tuition includes all materials and the use of basic tools. A $100 materials fee is payable to the instructor. All levels welcome.
This workshop starts with cutting, copper foiling and soldering stained glass, and quickly moves to learning modern methods of hand painting, air brushing, and silk-screening onto glass. Enamel paints are kiln fired on to the glass, a tradition dating from the Middle Ages. Most supplies and tools, including all paints, glass and several silk-screen images are provided. Expect to have fun with this historic medium and make at least one finished panel. No previous experience with glass is necessary. $500 September 8–12, 2014

Japanese Papermaking and Beyond Saaraliisa Ylitalo Japanese washi paper is characterized by its thinness and strength. This class covers all the steps of Japanese papermaking, starting with pulp preparation, cooking and scraping fibers clean, and beating them into pulp. Participants form sheets using the nagashizuki method with flexible screens as is practiced in Japan with kozu, gampi, and abaca (Philippine hemp) fibers. Students also explore decorative and very large sheets of paper. This method does not demand expensive Japanese screens (sugeta) and equipment, but instead is adaptable to our own western studios. No papermaking experience is required. A supply fee is payable to the instructor, and varies depending on the materials used.

Joomchi: Textured Handmade Paper Saaraliisa Ylitalo Joomchi is a Korean technique for making textured, handmade paper. Students combine layers of mulberry papers of various shapes and colors to create a new piece of paper. This technique is similar to felting, but uses paper instead of wool. The resulting crinkled papers can be used in surface design, bookmaking, collage, or anywhere one would use decorative paper. Learn to make three different book forms. Participants make origami envelopes to bind into a “pocket” book. Next, a variation on this form is folded. Participants also make a single signature book using decorative paper for the pages. If time permits, students make a meander book. Last, students learn to make a Coptic bound book of several signatures. Students will fold signatures, cover the book boards, punch holes, and sew the book together. This book form opens flat, making it an excellent journal or sketchbook. The art of making thread and using it to weave cloth dates back to 7th century Japan. In this class students prepare Japanese papers to make shifu; twist the paper into thread using a rough brick, hand held spindles and spinning wheels; and finally weave a small piece of cloth on a simple card loom from these hand spun threads. Participants also explore coloring on the paper and discuss contemporary uses for paper thread such as book binding, knitting, and weaving. Survey of Spinning Techniques with Varied Materials Sylvia DeMar Learn a variety of spinning techniques beyond single-ply wool yarn, beginning with a balanced two-ply, expanding to multiplys, cabled-plys, Navajo-ply, and novelty types. Explore the spinning of variegated rovings for a variety of effects and also blend fibers to create striped, segmented, and heathered rovings. Possible plant and animal fibers include: llama, alpaca, camel, mohair, silk, cashmere, angora, f lax, hemp, cotton, bamboo, tencel, soy silk, eco-spun, nylon, and fake cashmere. Students explore the use of natural dyes, beginning with the extraction of dye colors from raw materials such as tree bark, roots, or leaves. Preparing both plant and animal fibers for using a minimum of two mordants is covered. Participants take home samples dyed in class. Dye room safety is emphasized. A $25 materials fee is payable to the instructor and covers supplies.
Students learn the fundamentals of spinning: drafting, spinning, and finishing both single and 2-ply yarns using a spinning wheel. Instruction includes how to choose the right wheel, use of handcards and the drum carder, spinning wheel maintenance, how to measure the yards spun, and how to gauge the grist of yarn. Participants may use a school wheel or bring their own. Some open studio time is available for practice. A $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Surface Design: Batik Denise Vauthier Students explore the magical art of batik - layering colors of dyes, resisting with wax when a desired color is achieved and creating beautiful cloth. Shibori is a Japanese word for the technique of resist dyeing fabric by stitching, binding, or wrapping. Students learn the basics of this art, Arashi (pole wrapped), Trikit (stitch resist), and Boshi (capping), while making samples using silk and cotton fabrics. Rug Making: A Non-Traditional Approach

Discover amazing surface design effects achieved with simple household materials. Flour, sugar, and liquid detergent are just a few of the resists students explore. Students explore the contemporary design potential of nontraditional rug making techniques. Focusing on the theme of healing, students explore personal symbolism to create a richly stitched and meaningful cloth. Beginning / Advanced Millinery Feather Techniques and Trims Jan Wutkowski Feathered hats have been popular for centuries, and this workshop teaches participants to identify the best feathers to create striking embellishments for their own hats. First, students learn to “burn” ostrich feathers to create the elusive wispy, skeletal look and even ‘burn” interesting patterns into the feathers. Second, students construct a large and dramatic feather “flower” 10” across. Third, students learn ways of combining, cutting, and curling various feathers (pheasant, coq, biot, nagoire) for texture and style on hats and headpieces. Participants start with a classic boater buckram shape and a length of straw braid. This workshop is a two-day summary of the academic drawing principles an artist must understand to give an effective rendering of the human head. Starting with the mechanics of neck and head movement, participants progress to a comprehensive look at proportion, ball and plane simplification of the head, straight-line simplification, skeletal and muscular anatomy, and structural analysis of the features, volume as planes, and light and shade. It serves as a basic introduction to watercolor, a refresher for someone who hasn’t painted for a while, and a preparation for students looking to pursue a longer study of the medium. The color part of watercolor offers a unique set of challenges. In this workshop, a series of paint-handling exercises teaches the watercolorist to use the colors on his or her palette with more confidence and understanding. Whereas shape is well understood as an important compositional element, line is an oft-neglected element. In this workshop, students employ graphite, ink pen, rigger brush, crayon, or pastel to produce line elements together with watercolor washes to define shapes. Through the contrast of these two compositional features one creates dynamic paintings. Ink pen is also a useful tool for sketching in a travel journal. Betzi Robinson P’o Mo, or “splash ink,” is an ancient Chinese painting technique carried into the modern era by using watercolors on Japanese gold Shikishi Boards. Vermont Landscape Painting Retreat

Participants gather for a Thursday evening introduction and spend the following five days working plein air in and around Susan’s 1840’s farmhouse and studio, surrounded by woods, meadows, and hills near Plainfield, Vermont. Students may work in watercolor, oil, acrylic, or pastel. Some prior painting experience is required, but first time plein air painters are welcome. Class is limited to fourteen. Using photo-transferred personal images and acrylic paint, participants create a mixed media narrative triptych on small wooden panels. The workshop includes planning a composition and instruction in several photo transfer techniques. Narratives emerge as painted and imported imagery are layered. A $45 fee, payable to the instructor, covers three 12” X 12” cradled wooden panels.

Photography is all about capturing light. But what light is needed? Daylight doesn’t always cooperate; but pop-up flash is limited. Before one invests blindly, learn about the tools professionals use: flash, strobe, reflectors, umbrellas, gels, gobos, grids, and snoots. Participants learn to make many of these tools inexpensively. In addition, participants learn how the color of light impacts the final product, and how and when to change the size of the lights. Learn how artists create interactive installations and kinetic sculptures. This workshop teaches how to incorporate motion, light, and sound into your work with a simple, inexpensive device called a microcontroller. Without any prior knowledge of electronics or programming, participants learn to achieve interactive pieces that respond to environmental changes. Students bring a laptop and, prior to the workshop, directly order a kit of parts ($80). Learn to make your own tools. Mushroom, blowhorn, anticlastic, and raising stakes can be made, as well as chasing tools and a stonesetting jig. If participants complete one blowhorn stake and one mushroom stake the cost of the class is far less than the retail cost of those two stakes. Cutting, forming, welding, grinding, sanding, and polishing techniques are demonstrated. Prior jewelry or silversmithing experience is required. Welders, grinders, and other large power tools are used. This workshop is physically demanding and also requires reasonably good eyesight and depth perception. A materials fee is payable to the instructor (approximately $70) but varies depending on the material used. Fold Forming Meets Enameling Nick Barnes & Abby Goldblatt Saul Bell Award winning artists, Abby Goldblatt and Nick Barnes, team up again for this course. Through extensive demonstrations and play periods, students explore the exhaustive shapes and colors that these techniques bring to small-scale jewelry or larger sculptural pieces. Using samples as inspiration combined with an emphasis on playfulness, students are guided in the design development of their own unique pieces. Through the process of enameling, color may be draped over forms to enhance and tease the viewer, or to add the surprise of an additional element. Tuition includes the use of enamels. An optional tool kit is available for purchase from the instructors. $275 March 27–29, 2015

Jewelry Workshops | Travel Workshops
This workshop explores how the use of hand files, saws, and gravers, as well as flex shaft accessories can create infinite variety of form and decorative carved finishes for small-scale jewelry. Students are expected to have working knowledge of basic metalworking, including annealing copper based metals; hard soldering; and cutting and cleaning sheet metals. This is a fast paced one-day workshop exploring the creative and artistic possibilities of metal forming, and therefore there is not time for instruction on basics. Tuition includes studio fee. A tools and materials list is available from the instructor once registered. Space is limited to 10 students.
