In Suzanne’s words
Spring, always lovely in Qatar, extends a brief window to embrace a gorgeous climate. Cafes and coffee shops are bustling till the late hours as patrons socialise under the desert moon. If you enjoy exploring the latest dining scene you will be pleased to learn that a handful of outlets have opened, including Mykonos Mediterranean Restaurant at the InterContinental, JW Steak House at the Marriott, a newly redesigned Admiral’s Club at the Ritz Carlton and Spice at W Hotel. The beautiful Pearl Island is expected to open a couple of new restaurants this month as well. In preparation for the beach our editor visited the latest spa and details a broad variety of fitness options in the sports section. If spectator sports is more your thing, the World Gymnastics competition is an event not to miss with many of the world’s top gymnasts performing. The Qatar Arts scene received a boost last month with the gathering of local and international art intellectuals, connoisseurs and artists at the successful Global Art Forum hosted by the Museum of Islamic Arts. The Arts movement within Qatar is well underway and requires community support. You can contribute by visiting one of several interesting exhibits featured this month. Enjoy!

Do you need to go to Boot Camp? By Fionna Murray “One hundred push ups now! Faster, you ‘orrible lot.” Boot Camp fitness classes conjure up images of scary shaven-headed instructors shouting at a bunch of puny new recruits. Cut to a park in Doha, a shaven-headed fitness instructor is shouting at a bunch of puny new recruits... Fortunately, UK Personal Trainer Graeme Pattison is shouting encouragement rather than insults to the fit and the not-so-fit at this new outdoor exercise class. “We’re not yelling and screaming at people aggressively. It’s a motivating rather than a frightening experience,” said Graeme, in a not at all angry voice. If the gym makes you want to cry with boredom and aerobics classes make you want to cry with frustration at your rubbish coordination, then Boot Camp could be for you. 9
Feature
“This is run completely outdoors so you are not looking at the same treadmill screen or the mirror. Mentally, it’s a lot more stimulating,” said Graeme. The boot camp works as a group, which makes it more motivating (especially if you want to beat the other team in the relay race) and no two classes are the same, so it doesn’t get dull.
“It’s a very safe programme and it’s designed so you can have someone who is a complete novice next to someone who is mega fit and they will both still get so much out of it,” added Graeme. “The motivation levels are very high and people can keep each other going.” There are a range of times including 6:00 a.m. Dawn Patrol classes, 8:15 a.m. Just Done the School Run women only classes and the 7:30 p.m. Evening Patrol classes. It costs QR 700 for 12 sessions. *For more information check out www.bootcampqatar.com; email info@bootcampqatar.com; call Graeme on 685-4556. 10

Think you could be an author? By Fiona Murray If you have a blockbuster burning within you, now is the time to get writing because the major UK publisher Bloomsbury has just opened its Doha office. Bloomsbury has teamed up with Qatar Foundation to create Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) which is looking for new authors in English and Arabic. Within five years it aims to be publishing 100 new books each year, covering everything from academic tomes to children’s books and general fiction. 12
Spotlight on arts
It will also be translating and publishing some existing Arabic books into English and vice versa, which means both English and Arabic speaking readers can finally access books from each other’s culture, which were previously beyond their reach. Reading and Writing Development Director Mohanalakshmi Phongsavan is busy unpacking her boxes in Bloomsbury’s new office at Education City. “The most exciting thing for me about Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing coming here is that so many people have ideas for stories or academic work or research; this is an increasingly rich intellectual environment and a publisher is exactly the next thing we need.” Bloomsbury is one of the largest publishers in the UK with the Harry Potter series and Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner in its stable of successful books. Part of the publishing arm’s brief in Qatar is also to promote a love of reading for pleasure for all age groups and in all communities. As part of this initiative, Qatar has signed up for the World Book Day event and BQFP will be hosting a pilot day-long project for six and seven year olds at Qatar University on 23rd April. For more information, or to send off that dusty manuscript you’ve been keeping in the desk drawer, contact BQFP at bqfpublishing@gmail.com.

Bootleg Blues Brothers Jake and Elwood Blues are on their way to Doha- well not the actual Jake and Elwood, but the UK’s number one Blues Brothers tribute band. The original Blues Brothers started in 1978 as a musical sketch on the TV show, ‘Saturday Night Live’, with Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. The American blues and soul revivalist band soon began to take on life beyond television, releasing albums and having Hollywood films created based on their lives. 18

Close encounters
Speed Junkie By Erin Brannen Abdullah Al Sulaiti is addicted to speed. After all, not many people in the world are brave enough to get behind the wheel of a powerboat that routinely goes 160 miles per hour, much less travel the world to do it. Sulaiti is the pilot of Qatar 95, one of two Class 1 boats on the Qatar team, a 42-foot, twin-engine, 900hp carbon Kevlar composite catamaran, a boat he started piloting in 2005 after several years as a formula 1 boat racer “I’m a marine engineer by profession,” says Sulaiti “I’ve always loved boat engines. I started with the Federation (Qatar Marine Sports Federation) with jet skis. Then, after Qatar hosted the first Formula one race I decided to try that. I rented a boat, and I didn’t know what to expect- I saw the speed and I was attracted to it.” 34
Close encounters
Qatar hosts one of the most important stops on the Class 1 World Championship Circuit. This breathtaking spectacle takes place in venues all over the world, with pilots and throttle men vying for the coveted Sam Griffith Trophy.
Sulaiti was asked by fellow Class 1 pilot HE Sheikh Hassen bin Jabor Al Thani to join the Class 1 team in 2005. Since then Sulaiti has made his presence known in the racing world, taking his first podium in Doha during the Qatar Grand Prix, finishing second, and his second podium in Dubai alongside Matteo Nicolini in 2005. Sulaiti’s first win in Class 1 came in the Qatar Grand Prix in Doha in 2006, finishing third overall in the title race. Most recently he and throttle man Matteo Nicolini won first place at the Dubai Grand Prix in December of 2008. “My first race in Doha was my favourite race.” Says Sulaiti “I came first and Sheikh Hassan came second. To secure first and second in your home water means a lot. I was happy with the final round in Dubai (2008 season) not because I came first, but because we needed to send a message that the Qatar team is a strong team and the only time we don’t make it to the podium is when we have bad luck.” Sulaiti is hoping that the Qatar team can repeat their 2006 first place win and not have the same start as the 2008 season when Sheikh Hassan’s boat flipped and Qatar 95’s engine broke. He looks forward to seeing everyone in Doha cheering him on at the first race of the season here in Doha April 23rd to the 25th. 35

Gourmet guide
Wonderful Dining By Erin Brannen The opening of W brings with it some exciting new restaurants. March saw the opening of Spice and The Market, offering… well basically what their names suggest. The Market offers a variety of a la carte dishes, mostly based around seafood. I sampled the unique watermelon and goat cheese appetizer with olive oil and salt and pepper. I was a bit hesitant with this one, as I don’t, as a rule, enjoy watermelon, but the strong taste of the goat cheese mixed well with the sweetness of the melon, although I’m not sure if I would have chosen it myself, I'm glad i tried it. The tuna and cabbage spring rolls with a soybean sauce were a treat though. The tuna was nicely seared and it had a wonderful zest to it. 38
Gourmet guide
The shrimp salad with avocado came next. I’ve tried this dish at several other restaurants, and this one was pretty good. The sauce had a nice French onion/soy sauce taste that was interesting.
The atmosphere of the Market was bright and sunny, in contrast to the black and dark purples favoured throughout the rest of the hotel. The music was the clincher, an eclectic mix of poprock and acid jazz, combined to make it a pretty hip spot‌ But not as hip as Spice! Spice is the perfect name for this spicy addition to Doha dining. Serving South-east Asian fusion, the food is a delicious mix of Malaysian, Indian, Thai and Chinese. Everything I sampled, from the chicken samosas, to the sweet and sour shrimp on baked pineapple to the fish with a celeriac sauce, was savoury and spiced to perfection. Add the delicious food to the sophisticated, trendy atmosphere of blacks, reds, warm hanging lights, comfy circles of chairs and chic uniforms on the staff and you have what promises to become the hippest restaurant in Doha. This place is a definite must see, taste and feel! A spicy experience for your senses without a doubt. To book a reservation, contact 453-5353. 39

Kids club
Contours Express By Jessica Davey-Quantick Fitness can be a family affair. My Centre, located accross from the InterContinental Hotel in West Bay, recently opened Contours Express, a ladies gym that allows mums to sweat it out while their children do the same. “The whole centre is for kids,” said Khalid Darwish, Managing Director. “It gives mums an opportunity to come with their children and enjoy a gym while they are here.” Offering several different programs for kids aged six months to 13 years, Darwish says the focus is starting healthy habits for the whole family. 47
Kids club
“We have a children’s fitness centre with classes for kids,” he said. “The classes are structured with lots of fun. Children, they will love it.” For mothers they have Contours Express’ 30-minute circuit training regime, which combines aerobics with weight machines in a workout that’s over before you know it.
“We are offering a 29 minute circuit training programme. They also have different aerobic classes, each a mixture of step aerobics, kickboxing and ball that lasts an hour,” said Darwish.” The idea is to help anyone, no matter their age, learn how to fit physical fitness into their lives- even mothers whose time is at a definite premium. “It’s in order to convince the kids to live healthy lifestyles. The classes will also improve their social skills,” said Darwish. “We teach them healthy habits. If they’re doing that when they are children, they’ll keep doing it.” And if the kids are busy tumbling, running, and being active, their mothers can have a chance to do the same. A three-month membership costs QR 2,000. For more information, contact 498-0099. 48

A Blissful Experience By Erin Brannen There’s a new spa in town, the long awaited Bliss Spa at W. Ever since I was told Bliss would be opening up over two years ago I’ve heard an endless stream of “Oh I can’t wait, Bliss is awesome!” and “Oh boy Bliss is the best!” from those lucky enough to have had the Bliss experience at one of their other W outlets worldwide. So when it opened in March I made sure I was one of the first to experience Bliss.

QH Recommends
What did I think? Pretty impressive actually. I was able to sample a range of services both during their pre-opening and post-opening stages and I have to say that baring the natural ‘just opened’ bugs, bloopers and computer blips, the service was excellent. The staff is friendly and experienced, and represents a multicultural cross section stemming from England, the Philippines and Lebanon. They are more than willing to suggest at home treatments to maintain that fresh-from-the-spa feeling.
I enjoyed a deep tissue massage, a facial (featuring micro-derma abrasion), a mani-pedi and some waxing. All of these services were delivered excellently. I was especially impressed by the waxing. The therapist used a strip-less wax that cut down on the pain normally associated with waxing. I will definitely be making Bliss my waxing destination of choice. Most impressive are the prices. The deep tissue ran QR 750, however it lasted for 105 minutes (which is the longest I’ve seen offered in Doha), and the manipedi and waxing were all under QR 200. Given the sheer level of professionalism and skill as well as all the extras, these are bargain prices. However the real deal breaker for me was the atmosphere. While the spa is very clean, white and almost clinical, the music and treats offered are not your normal spa fair of chirping crickets and cucumber infused water - it’s jazz and chocolate brownies. Can anybody say Bliss? To book your treatments, call 453-5353

Musical notes
Lil' Wayne By Jessica Davey-Quantick He might have a poorly-spelt version of ‘little’ in his name, but the reaction he’s getting is enormous! Lil Wayne was scheduled to take over the InterContinental beach on April 16th for an all ages show that had facebook all a twitter with excitement, however that’s no longer going to happen… just yet! “We’re getting all sorts of fan buzz- I feel like people aren’t sleeping! I’m getting phone calls in the middle of the night, emails,” said Sara Nassery of BlackPearl entertainment, the company bringing Lil Wayne to Doha. She says even though unforeseen issues made this trip impossible, they’re going to keep trying. Lil’ Wayne first burst onto the scene in 1997 as a member of Hot Boys, with his first solo effort dropping in 1999. He hit his stride in the early 2000s, gaining popularity with Tha Carter in 2004, and it’s two follow-ups, Tha Carter II in 2005, and Tha Carter III in 2008. Since then Lil’ Waynes been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, and is currently working on a rock album to be released this year. He’s collaborated with everyone from Chris Brown to Fat Joe to Kanye West, and fans say he’s going to be a breath of R&B air in the electronic-drenched Doha music scene. 55
