qatar's leading restaurant, in a class of its own
A recent review by
The New York Times and The International Herald Tribune (22 March 2009) says it all... "Devotees of the Arab world’s most celebrated cuisine should target Al Mourjan...the bayside restaurant is already winning over the city ’s chicest set with its stylish white interiors, stellar waterfront vistas and fine Levantine dishes."

Letter from the Chairman
It's been a long time coming. After seven wonderful years of fond attachment to our handy Qatar Happening Events Guide we are officially announcing our move to something new. Of late we have been bursting out of the covers and although QH online continues to serve us well with overflow and updates, the time has come to move on to a bigger and better print format. Starting from this coming October, Qatar Happening Events Guide will evolve to an almost A4, still friendly sized , magazine with all the familiar and popular "in the know" content that has helped us enrich your social, learning and business lives in Qatar - plus a whole lot more. Not exactly a transformation, the new Qatar Happening will retain the same fresh and charismatic personality while experiencing a growth spurt. This move, of course mirrors a more sophisticated and plentiful events and entertainment industry within the country. It’s all good and only possible through the longstanding loyalty of our following of tens of thousands of readers like you. We remain ever grateful for your continued support and encouragement and aspire to retain the confidence you have placed in us.

Higher Learning By Fiona Murray  Bright students dream of getting into Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge, but applying to these prestigious universities can be a daunting prospect. Now, a team of education specialists is offering students from Qatar the chance to attend a threeweek course in England which aims to demystify the process of applying to top universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. Educational Consultants Intelligent Gulf and British Education Experts ISIS have joined forces to create the World University Preparation Course which will take place at Cambridge University this summer. 9
Feature
The aim of the course is to provide students and parents with a realistic and informed understanding of exactly what’s involved in applying to top universities. Running the course are Elizabeth Rickards, the former head of Davies Laing and Dick College private sixth form in London; Dr Jon Tabbert, a specialist in US education who is an expert on American university placement and Claire Davies an experienced deputy head and head of sixth form in the UK, who has run a successful Oxbridge entrance programme.
“Above all, the three day course will be informative, diagnostic and practical” said Elizabeth Rickards. “From the outside the whole process of applying to Ivy League colleges or Oxbridge can be daunting. The idea behind this course is to provide students and parents with a realistic and well informed understanding of exactly what is involved in applying to the world’s best universities so that the students get the best possible chance of success”. 10
11
Feature
The course will give students individual advice on where they should apply and what subjects they should apply for. Seminars will cover a wide range of topics such as which international qualifications are acceptable for which universities; the differences between US and UK degrees and how the applications process works on both sides of the Atlantic; how to select the best Oxbridge college to improve your chances of being made an offer, and what students should do to prepare.
Students will be prepared for all aspects of the Oxbridge or the American Ivy League application process: the forms, the essays, the personal statements, the relevant entrance exams and crucially‌ the interview. They will be given the opportunity to work with advisors from the Fulbright Commission and admissions teams from Oxford, Cambridge and top American universities. The residential World University Preparation Course takes place at Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge from 27 June to 18 July. *For more information call 4581745/6 or email qatar@intelligentgulf.com.

THE Onederpainters By Jessica Davey-Quantick Bright blobs of primary colours, swirling pictures of leaves and houses and smiling stick people decorate a corner of THEOne in Landmark Mall. Looking at the paintings lined up on the wall, they look like any child’s drawings; you wouldn’t know they were done by kids with special needs. But you would know how amazing those children are. “Some of the folks don’t communicate, they don’t speak. So we look at their art, and they can tell us what they’re thinking,” said Torrence Royer, Transition Coordinator at Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs. They’re the ones who’ve provided the works of art for the exhibition, dubbed ‘THEOnederpainters’. “The amazing thing to me is how creative the teachers are, and the students – I could never do this myself!” 14
Spotlight on arts
Established in 1999 by H.H. Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Misned, Shafallah’s literature says they ‘aim to empower special needs children to fully participate in society by offering comprehensive services and care to these individuals, their families and the community’. But in real terms, they do so much more. They provide structure and education for both children with special needs and the people who love them. Currently with around 600 students from ages 3- 21, Royer says they have a waiting list of over 200 people, and are currently preparing to launch a post-graduate program for their students who’ve aged out of Shafallah, but still need support. This month they’re focusing primarily on Autism awareness. In the early 1990s, only around one in 1,000 children were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder. Now, it’s closer to one in 150. Researchers still don’t know much about the disorder, but what they do know is if diagnosed early, treatment like the ones offered at Shafallah can make a big difference. “There are so many good things about art, it’s hard to pick one,” said Royer. “Sometimes we’ll choose the colours for them, sometimes it’s totally theirs- we adjust our support to individual students.” But one of the most important things they do, and the purpose behind THE Onederpainters exhibition, is educate the public. “It shows them that people with disabilities are full people,” said Royer. “They have all the range of artistic capabilities, you just have to bring them out. Our students teach us a lot.” Each painting sells for QR 1000, with all proceeds going to the centre. For more information, visit www.shafallah.org.qa

Dancing Around the World By Jessica Davey-Quantick James Brown said ‘Any problem in the world can be solved by dancing.’ And while they might not be trying to solve the world’s problems, Colombian Ballet National El Firulete tries to bring it a little closer together with their performance ‘Dancing around the World’, coming to Doha May 27. “It’s a mix- tango, flamenco, ballet, contemporary,” said Events Promoter Rocio Fielder. “The main thing is just to show a bit of South American culture. Our intention with this event is to promote Latin American culture in the Middle East, to establish an important bond with the Arabic culture, as well as with the expatriates.” 19
Spotlight on entertainment
With headquarters in Columbia and Dubai supporting their two dance troupes and schools, this is the ballet’s first time in Doha. They’re bringing with them a show they describe as a tour of the world through dance. “It’s a fun and lively artistic performance,
choreographed to take the audience on a journey around the world through a variety of musical genres and cultural dances,” said Fielder. Their repetoire includes everything from Contemporary Dance and traditionally South American and Spanish dances like Tango, Milonga, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco and Pasodoble to Broadway, Bellydance and CanCan. “It’s a professional ballet,” said Fielder. With the establishment of their Dubai headquarters in 2006, they aim to be the premiere center dedicated to Latin dances in the Gulf region. ‘Dancing Around the World’ is the first show they’ve brought to Doha. Tickets are QR 280, which includes aperitifs and drinks, and can be purchased at Costa Café and the City Center and Villagio Starbucks. Show starts at 7:00 p.m. on May 27th. Cycling the Globe By Jessica Davey-Quantick Pablo Garcia likes to ride his bicycle- a lot. Obviously, since he’s spent almost 8 years cycling across the globe. “I had a kind of dream, to travel and see the other side of the world. I thought with a bicycle I could see people in another way,” said Garcia. “The aim of the trip is to bring cultures closer. In South America we don’t know many things about this side of the world. It’s a kind of dream to bring people closer together." And see people he has, all the way from his home country of Argentina to Qatar, traveling through Egypt, South Africa, Europe, Turkey, Spain, Russia, Morocco, Scandinavia, Africa and the Middle East. So far he’s wheeled his way through 59 countries, for a total of 71,800 km, and he’s not about to stop till he’s circumnavigated the globe. 27
Spotlight of sports
“It’s very difficult for me to pick a favorite country,” he said. “But I really enjoyed Mozambique – they speak Portuguese so I could share more!” He says that when people see him peddling into town, particularly in smaller villages, they’re often surprised. “They’re not used to seeing tourists, let alone someone on a bicycle like me!” he said. “I’m surrounded by hundreds of kids. I just try to smile and go away fast!”
But he says overall, people have been very welcoming and interested in what he’s doing. Which is a good thing – his trip is funded mainly by the sale of his photographs of the places he’s been, and sponsorships; in Qatar by the Qatar Cycling Federation, Mitsubishi Motors, and the Qatar National Hotels Company. “In Muslim countries, I have only nice memories of people. Always I was welcomed, even if we couldn’t communicate. I have grateful words for them.“ His next stop is Saudi Arabia. “I was in Syria and Lebanon in the winter- I didn’t plan to come here in summertime, no way! I want to move fast. I expect to cover Asia, Australia and then North America and back to Argentina.” He thinks it’ll take him around four more years to finish the trip, taking him through more than 100 countries across five continents and around 120,000 km in total. “The idea was just to travel. The bicycle was the way. It’s not just traveling; it’s a way of living. I believe the bike is perfect, especially in the city. Many people should include it!” 28

Close encounters
Breast Cancer Awareness By Jessica Davey-Quantick Know thyself, women – including your breasts. That’s the message organizers of several breast cancer awareness initiatives in Doha want to spread. “In this country, and it used to be true in the U.S., people do not talk about breast cancer. In many societies, it still isn’t talked about – it’s just ‘that disease’” said Ellie LeBaron, wife of the Amerian Ambassador, who speaks regularly on the subject to any group who’ll have her. “I say talk about it, learn about it, so you have support if you are diagnosed. I want it to be in the open. People don’t talk about it openly, even with their own family.” 35
Close encounters
And that’s a problem. While statistics vary and are unavailable for Qatar, breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women – second only to non-melanoma skin cancer in the United States. In 2005, 186,467 women and 1, 764 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, breast cancer is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer, with some of the highest survival rates – if it’s caught early. “People don’t talk about it. It makes people think it’s rarer, and it’s really quite common. We can support patients with good, informed information if we talk about it,” said LeBaron. “I don’t have any stats but I think in the U.S. most lumps are found by the women themselves. Women need to be aware of that, and not expect the doctor to find everything. Women know what their breasts are like.” Speaking engagements like the ones LeBaron does, and initiatives like the breast-check bookmark, which shows women how to give themselves a self-exam, aim to educate women and save lives. But attitudes need to change as well. And according to LeBaron, that’s happening. “Actually, it’s quite easy! I have found Qatari men are very responsive. I think people are receptive. “ But there’s still a long way to go. “I’ve had a Qatari tell me his wife had breast cancer, and it was fine one-on-one, but when someone else joined in the conversation, it had to stop,” said LeBaron. “I think they are willing to talk about it though. “ And that, she says, is the first step towards universally healthy breasts. “Talk to your friends, talk to your family members, to talk your neighbors. Just talk.” For more information, including a list of symptoms and health links, check out the Qatar National Cancer Society at www.qncs.org.qa. 36

Gourmet guide
Grand Cuisine By Erin Brannen Doha’s culinary options continue to expand this month with the addition of the new outlets at the Grand Hyatt. The Hyatt brings Doha five new restaurants: Biscotti, a coffee and tea lounge, Rocca, an Italian restaurant, Le Grill, an all day dining steak house, and Issan, featuring traditional Thai dishes and Dunes, a cigar bar/ restaurant. The nicest thing about these new outlets is their openness. In stark contrast to many restaurants in Doha which specialize in intimate dark corners Grand Hyatt specializes in open, airy spaces. The atmosphere of Grand Hyatt is the Orient meets Arabia, with an equal mixture of both touches. We had the opportunity to try Le Grill and Issan, which definitely offer a unique new dining experience to the people of Doha. Le Grill is an all day dining restaurant, which, if you’ve experienced any of the others in Doha you will associate with being a buffet restaurant while it does offer a salad bar, it’s actually only an a la carte restaurant, offering an excellent variety of international dishes and some yummy steaks. 40

Especially nice about Le Grill is that their outdoor terrace is also their sheisha terrace, offering the same menu and beverage list as the indoor part of the restaurant, perfect for the sheisha-holics among us. My suggestion for a yummy meal would be their striploin steak with an asparagus and oyster mushroom side and strawberry pavlova for dessert – simply delicious.
Issan brings you the authentic taste of Thailand, with spicy dishes full of chilli, lime and ginger. We attended their new Friday brunch, which at 380 QR per person for the unlimited bubbly brunch, was positively delicious. Unlike most brunches which offer you a buffet style selection, everything at Issan is made to order. You make your choices from a set menu and the dishes are served in little portions so everyone at your table can pick and choose from a variety of different ones. This brunch isn’t for those who are afraid of spice. All the dishes are genuinely Thai and definitely spicy, but for those spice lovers among us it’s a welcome addition to Doha. My favorite dishes were the red curry with duck and the mango and sticky rice. For more information, or to book a reservation, please call the Grand Hyatt at 448-1234. 42

Be Aware By Fiona Murray Awatif Hussain tells me a story about a mother that came to visit her at the Qatar Diabetes Association “Her son was three years old and the mother came to me crying, and told me the teachers wouldn’t let him use the bathroom, when they finally let him they found him unconscious. His mother and I cried together. All the schools of children with diabetes, but they don’t know how to care for them.” Hussain is the Public Relations Officer for the Qatar Diabetes Association, and after many encounters with concerned parents like the mother she told me about, she realized the need for a country wide awareness campaign to address issues in schools concerning the rights of children who have diabetes. 49
Feature
“It’s so important to have a nurse in the school, the children have the right to go to the bathroom and drink water when they need to, teachers should be trained to recognize hyperglycemia and to give insulin.” In order to spread the word about the rights of children with diabetes Hussain has created a brochure and a training program that will be given to all nurses, teachers, bus drivers and parents. “The Qatar Diabetes Association will lead the training and provide the guide. We will give free blood testing and doses of insulin. There will be a kit for special activities and we will teach people how to deal with the student’s sick days and emotional needs, like what to do if they refuse to take their shots or eat.”
The Qatar Diabetes Association is also trying to pass a law that recognizes the basic rights in schools for students with diabetes. For more information about the Rights of Student with Diabetes at School Program please call Awatif Hussain at 437-6157 or visit the Qatar Diabetes Association. 50

Musical notes
Enriqué Iglesias By Jessica Davey-Quantick New grads from Education City will leave the academic world with a sultry serenade this year, when Enrique Iglesias performs on May 6th in Ceremonial Court. The Spanish singer-songwriter started his musical career in Latin America, becoming one of the most popular Spanish-speaking artists, selling more Spanish language albums that any other artist at the time. By 1999, he had begun to crossover into the English-speaking market, with his hit ‘Bailamos’ blasting out of radios all over the U.S.A. His popularity only grew in 2001-2002 when his song ‘Hero’ became a number one hit after Sept. 11th, and was permanently tattooed on the world’s eardrums. Now, he’s heading to Doha- and while his signature mole may be gone, it’s up to Doha audiences to decide if his talent went with it. Standard tickets cost QR 350, Premium cost QR 500, and VIP cost QR 1,500 and are available from Virgin Megastores, Grand Cine City, and QMDI Box Office. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the show starts at 9:00 p.m. 54
