FEATURING SATSUKI ODAMURA (BASS KOTO)

Australia’s world-acclaimed taiko drumming ensemble, TaikOz, presents a stunning new work. Introspection, meditative melodies and sheer explosive might sit alongside light-hearted exuberance in TaikOz’s Crimson Sky. The thunderous drumming of the taiko is interwoven with the hypnotic melodies of the shakuhachi and shinobue bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance on the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17-stringed plucked instrument to be played by special guest artist Satsuki Odamura. DATE DURATION VENUE ART FORM COST

Based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru, Toward The Crimson Sky has been written by TaikOz Artistic Director Ian Cleworth, evoking the poem’s sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky. The program will also feature new works by the two youngest TaikOz members: from the peaceful meditation of Solace by Tom Royce-Hampton to the dynamic high energy of Exploration by Anton Lock, featuring the virtuosity of the drum set pitted against the dynamic high energy of the taiko.

fibro Coast In the era before motels and resorts, a holiday at the Gold and Sunshine coasts usually meant either pitching a tent and camping by the beach or staying in a simple cottage owned by family or friends. Simplicity, informality, individuality and increasingly a design that acknowledged a connection to outdoor living were the hallmarks of these humble places. At a time now when rapid change to the urban fabric of the Coasts is taking place, a few of these buildings remain, and hold with them, many layers of memory of this holiday history of relaxation and escape.

design legacy of the humble fibro beach house, and through the work of artists and architects allows us to take another look at these quiet and disappearing places. The exhibition features the work of artists who have holidayed here from the 1920s and painted views of the beach cottage experience including Vida Haley, Lloyd Rees and Ethel Carrick Fox. Also featured are contemporary artists who have made works that respond to the resonance of the fibro shack within our community including Anna Carey, Bruce Reynolds, Rebecca Ross and Elaine Campaner.

Sebastian di Mauro: Surf `n´ Turf Highly acclaimed Brisbane artist Sebastian di Mauro will showcase a playful sculptural installation of artificial plastic grass and colourful neoprene – the rubbery stuff that wet suits are made of. His exhibition, Surf ‘n’ Turf taps into some of the aspirations of the suburban Australian dream, and acknowledges that a large percentage of the population live on or close to the coast, and that despite being drought-prone, there is a strong desire to create and maintain the evergreen manicured lawn and a ‘little piece of heaven on earth’. Renegades: Outsider Art The colourful and expressive artworks presented in Renegades: Outsider Art come from a spectrum of makers: studios supporting people with intellectual disabilities, community care centres, psychiatric settings and outer geographical reaches, or from purely free spirits. These ‘unlikely’ makers brim with creativity without academic instruction, connections to commercial or public art galleries, marketing, critics or art schools. And yet the artworks demonstrate powerful connections and deep emotional insight . Renegades: Outsider Art is a KickArts Contemporary Arts touring exhibition created in partnership with Arts Project Australia and funded by Visions of Australia, an Australia Council for the Arts initiative.

Edwin Bode: Pioneering Artist of the Gold Coast Hinterland Region English-born Edwin Bode immigrated to Queensland in 1882, aged 23 and is regarded as the first colonial artist to have resided in our region. With poor health unsuited to the rigours of farming, he moved to the Gold Coast hinterland where he lived a more itinerant life, painting watercolours of homesteads and farms in the emerging communities of Canungra, Wonglepong and Mt Tambourine. The exhibition charts Bode’s evolution of seeing the bush landscape of Australia as an English emigrant arriving in the region at the time of early European settlement and also shows how he became fascinated with photography, learning the laborious techniques of glass plate negatives to create some of the earliest photographic images of the area. His works show the patterns of early settlement, attachment to the land and a reflection on the displacement of local indigenous people. DATE VENUE COST

Saltwater Country Many exhibitions of Australian Aboriginal art focus on the intrinsic nature of aboriginal culture and its connection to land and place of birth. ‘Country’ has come to be understood an allencompassing word to explain this relationship. What is less understood by many audiences nationally and internationally is the equally strong cultural connectedness to the sea that is very distinctive to the Queensland indigenous experience. The long coastline of this large state is much more than a defining border in shaping the development and style of artworks here. The DATE VENUE COST

Season Packages are the best way to get discounted tickets, priority seating, payment options and other bonuses. Plus it’s a great way to lock in your entertainment for the year so you don’t have to think about it again! This year, we’ve included so many more shows in the Season Package options. Our Main Stage, Independent Season, Family Series and A Morning With … performances are all on offer, making it so easy to find five or more shows you want to see.

Why should I buy a Season Package? • Save up to 25% on general admission ticket prices • The option to Pay by the Month (buy now, pay later). Spread the cost of your Season Package in equal monthly instalments, charged to your credit card each month between January and June 2014*, making it affordable to enjoy the entertainment on offer. Conditions apply, see ‘The Small Print on page 55 for further details. • Secure the best seats before the performances are open to the public. • Receive preferred treatment before, during and after Mainstage performances with the Express Lane available at the bar. Wear your Arts Centre Gold Coast 2014 Season pin to take advantage of this exclusive service. • Exchange tickets for another Season performance if you’re unable to attend. Conditions apply, see ‘The Small Print’ on page 55 for further details. • When you book your Season Package you can purchase additional tickets at the discounted price to bring along family and friends, or give tickets as gifts. Additional tickets must be purchased at the same time as your Season Package. • Access to discounted tickets and a priority booking period for selected shows yet to be announced in 2014. • Enjoy extended Gold Coast City Gallery opening times to enhance your cultural experience.
