It’s hard to imagine great movies without their equally great soundtracks. Modern composers have set the tone for countless films, including John Williams for Star Wars and the Harry Potter series, or Ennio Morricone for The Mission, from which the QSO will perform the famous melody, Gabriel’s Oboe. So expressive, so vital to the meaning of the movie, is it any wonder that concert composers have always been drawn to writing with stopwatch in hand and silent rushes on the screen before them? Net result? Melodies so sublime, and orchestral showpieces so exhilarating, that they define the music of our times.

The One Day of the Year By Alan Seymour ‘It’s Anzac Day this week, that’s my day, that’s the old Diggers’ day.’ What is the meaning of Anzac Day? For war veterans like Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride. For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of our Diggers to its knees and into the gutter – via one too many down the pub. Sparking huge controversy on its release in the Sixties, this play incites as much passion now as ever. The One Day of the Year looks at our national legend through the eyes of generation, class and character.

Kinship Artistic Director - Stephen Page Internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents an original and breathtaking theatrical experience, Kinship, by award-winning choreographer Stephen Page.

Kinship opens with Brolga, a creation story inspired by the totemic systems in Australian Aboriginal culture. Set in North East Arnhem Land, a young girl ventures out before sunset and finds herself on a brolga feeding ground. As she is challenged by her totemic temptation, she takes us on a journey of exploring relationships between humans and creatures, reflecting on the intrinsic spirituality of the natural world. The performance continues with ID, investigating what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of identity. ID contemplates human nature in modern society where skin colour can drive perceptions rather than embracing differences.
