The One Day of the Year April 25. Anzac Day. It’s the one day of the year that Australia stops to commemorate all those who have served and died in war. On the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, HIT Productions brings a thoroughly fresh take on a truly Australian classic. The phrase ‘the one day of the year’ was first recorded in a poem written in 1916 and eventually became the title of Alan Seymour's once-banned play. The One Day of The Year returns to the stage this April and will incite as much passion as ever. Playwright Alan Seymour has mixed feelings about The One Day of the Year. Naturally, he's proud of the enduring play he wrote in 1958 for an amateur playwriting competition, but occasionally the play evokes uncertainty and even anxiety. The One Day of the Year looks at our national legend through the eyes of

generation, class and character. For war veterans like characters Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride. For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of our Diggers to its knees and into the gutter – via one too many down the pub. Don’t miss your chance to see The One Day of The Year as we mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. Performances are Thursday 23 April at 7.30pm and Friday 24 April at 11.00am in the Arts Theatre. Tickets are $54 for Adults, $47 for Concessions, $45 for groups 6+ or $30 for students. Book at www.theartscentregc.com.au or |(07) 5588 4000.

True stories from WW2 pilots In honour of Anzac Day, this April we bring you a special theatrical experience in A Morning With… FLAK. Although he’s well-known as a comic actor from his work on Fast Forward, Michael Veitch is also the author of two best-selling books, Flak and Fly, which were based on his interviews with surviving war pilots. Michael takes on the roles of former airmen, recounting their extraordinary, true and largely untold stories of combat in the air war of 1939-45. ‘I interviewed more than fifty pilots, bomb aimers, air gunners etc, almost all of whom had never revealed their wartime adventures to anyone, including, in some cases, their own families. And the stories they told are truly amazing,’ said Michael.

‘In all I will present five men and their stories, all contrasting, all compelling, all true. I hope to instil in the audience the same sense of amazement and admiration that I experienced when hearing these stories for the first time, from the mouths of the men who lived them.’

Bringing Miss Saigon to life

This June, Gold Coast performers will get the chance to star in the city’s first ever full production of Miss Saigon. Following the success of Jesus Christ Superstar last year, The Arts Centre is excited to bring back another fully produced, in-house musical! This epic musical love story tells the tragic tale of young bar girl Kim, orphaned by war, who falls in love with an American GI called Chris – but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon. Under the direction of Brad Rush, the creatives and cast will bring this mesmerising musical to life. ‘I am thrilled to be invited to take the helm as Director for the upcoming production of Miss Saigon,’ said Rush. ‘Surrounding me is an incredible team of creative talents that will help bring this epic story to life.’ Following his work on Jesus Christ Superstar last year, David Piper returns as Musical Director. David was Associate Musical Director for the large-scale national-touring productions of Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia and Wicked, and Musical Director for The Boy From Oz and Chess, for which he was nominated for a Green Room Award. This year, Ellen Simpson will take on

the role of Choreographer. Ellen is an ARAD classically trained dancer whose credits in commercial and contemporary dance and choreography include the Asian Cup 2015 Opening Ceremony (Havana Brown), Red Foo in Dancing with the Stars, Dannii Minogue and Olivia Newton John/Cyndi Lauper for Mardi Gras. Together, this formidable team are looking forward to casting the musical and seeing it take centre stage. Says Rush, ‘The score comes from the creators of Les Miserables, so if you are a fan of that music you will certainly connect to this wonderful score.’ Over the history of musical theatre, it has been common that the idea of war becomes part of a romantic storyline - take for example The Sound of Music and Cabaret that both reference strong political statements as a driving context to storyline. Essentially though, Miss Saigon is a love story... a story of hope and tragedy where time and place are the only things getting in the way of an extraordinary

love. The story is based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly which similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance. There is beauty and love set against the hideous and uselessness of war.

Miss Saigon is truly an international sensation – an epic, daring pop opera that is universal in its emotional power. Come see what all the fuss is about and book your tickets now to one of the most significant theatre experiences on the Gold Coast this year. Vietnamese-inspired food markets will be open for dinner from 5pm prior to every show . The Season runs 12 to 20 June. Tickets are $57 for Adults, $49 Concession or group of six or more, or $32 for Students. Book at www. theartscentregc.com.au or (07) 5588 4000. This event is proudly supported by Paradise Point Community Bank® Branch Bendigo Bank (Major Partner) and Pindara Private Hospital (Support Partner).

STAGE THEATRE

Inspired by a photograph The worldwide phenomenon Miss Saigon hits our stage this June, but did you know this epic musical was inspired by a photograph? Creators Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg were first inspired by a photo they saw in a magazine, taken a few weeks before the fall of Saigon. The image was of a Vietnamese mother giving up her child at Saigon airport in the hope of a new life in the United States, to be with the child’s American father, an ex- GI. This photo led them back to the story of Madame Butterfly, a tale of a marriage between an American lieutenant and a geisha. This in turn inspired them to write their own beautiful version of the story, Miss Saigon. ‘This photograph was for Alain and I the start of everything,’ said Claude-Michel Schönberg in 1995. Highlights of the show include the evacuation of the last Americans in Saigon from the Embassy roof by helicopter while a crowd of abandoned Vietnamese screams in despair, the victory parade of the new communist regime and the frenzied night club scene just prior to the time of defeat. The musical was premièred at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, on 20 September 1989, closing after over four thousand performances, on 30 October 1999. As of September 2013, Miss Saigon remains Broadway's twelfth longest-running show.

A fine score We will make a significant investment in the band for Miss Saigon. Wages for the band for this one production will make up a huge portion of the entire show budget. But, quality costs! We are committed to engaging professional musicians for our 2015 musical and invite you to help us look after them. The band is made up of five sections, including Reeds, Brass, Keyboards, Percussion and Strings.

Costumes needed!

Do you want to support your favourite section with a philanthropic donation? For ways to donate, please visit our website or contact the Development team on (07) 5588 4046.

There’s no question – costumes can make the show. But what if there was no money for costumes? The show wouldn’t be the same if the performers just wore black. We are committed to presenting an incredible Miss Saigon for you, but we need to spend $10,000 on costumes to do it. Can you help? You might like to donate $10 towards a wig or $50 for a pair of boots. Perhaps $25 for hot-pants is more your style? For $300 you could cover an entire outfit! Please consider whether you’ve got some spare dollars to really make a difference to our musical this year. We’d be thrilled to recognise your support on our website until the end of the year, just to say thanks. For ways to donate, visit our website or contact our Development team on (07) 5588 4046.

STAGE THEATRE

Soulful musical inspired by life Hailed as ‘the next Bran Nue Day’ by The Age, The New Black is a an uplifting, hilarious and soulful musical about a young Aboriginal lawyer who becomes caught between family loyalties and his own aspirations. Co-creators Stephen Lloyd-Helper and Leeroy Bilney talk about creating

The New Black.

Stephen Lloyd-Helper Co-creator

Known for quality work of cultural diversity, Steve received a Distinction in the Multicultural Arts Professional Development program at RMIT and is a graduate of Yale. On Broadway, Steve’s production of Fiddler on the Roof was nominated for the Best Revival Tony Award. Smokey Joe’s Cafe, which he conceived, is among the 30 longestrunning Broadway musicals of all time. At the Sydney Opera House, Steve’s Simply Weill, Sondheim’s Follies and You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow and Love Letters were all acclaimed. What has been your role in the creation of this musical? I had the idea for it when I was working with Leeroy and Marcus at the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts. I was directing a show the students devised with me called Soul Music which they did at QPAC. During this process, it was clear to me that there was a very important story that wasn’t getting heard by a general audience. So my roles have been

CULTURE

‘ideas man’, director, co-writer, empowerer, advocate, producer. You staged an outdoor performance for the Spirit Festival, and a concert version of the musical in 2012 with the Arts Centre Melbourne – how was that received? It wasn’t so much a concert version as a 55 minute performance for a short season at the Arts Centre, showing the fruits of a two and a half week creative development process they funded. It was a sensation - there really is no better word. Not only was the audience response at each performance and on every feedback card a rave, it really communicated deeply with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. We hit some universal chords.

the family scenes, have lead us onto clearer character driven paths. We discovered a key dynamic that underpins all the main characters - that no one plays the victim. Everyone, in his or her own way, is striving to make things better even in the face of a system stacked against them. What would you like Gold Coast audiences to take away from this piece? Joy. Tears. Connection. Singing/whistling the infectious tunes of this great score. The feeling of having a profound experience in a super entertaining show. To share their experience of The New Black with as many people as they can. And just maybe, the motivation to take action to improve our social justice system.

How has the work progressed since then? Hugely. Some characters have done a 180 degree turn and all of them have deepened. A great deal more writing and rewriting by all three of us, and especially by Leeroy in

About the show

Leeroy Bilney Co-creator

Jim Kokatha is a young, bright, educated, Aboriginal man on the way up at a prestigious Brisbane law firm. But when his Aunty expects him to represent her at an inquest, Jim is caught between his aspirations and his responsibilities. In trying to reconcile the two, he takes us on an uplifting journey full of comedy, drama, song, dance and spectacle. The New Black is savvy, professional, urban, ambitious and cheeky! Deadly Award-winning songwriter Marcus Corowa’s score is filled with memorable songs with outstanding melodies and clever lyrics. The New Black is a musical about yearning for a better life and the empowerment to make it happen. Based on the lives of Marcus and Leeroy and so many aspiring, young, Indigenous people who are trying to change the world for the better for everyone, The New Black strikes the universal chords of life/work balance. See The New Black on Wednesday 13 or Thursday 14 May at 7.30pm. Adult tickets are $49, Adult Group Tickets $41pp, Concession tickets are $43 and Students are $28. Book at www.theartscentregc. com.au or (07) 5588 4000. This event is part of the Indigenous Program, proudly supported by Bond University

Leeroy Bilney is a young Indigenous performer from the West Coast of South Australia, whose clan groups include Kokatha, Wirangu, Mirrning, Barngala from SA. He was trained through WAAPA, NAISDA and the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA). With Stephen Helper and Marcus Corowa, he helped devise and starred in Soul Music at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre to rave reviews. He has also appeared in Miracles, starring alongside Deborah Mailman and Casey Donovan. What inspired you to create The New Black? Every day moments in my life and the moments in other Aboriginal people’s lives. These ‘moments’ can be shared, cherished and sacred at the same time. Projecting this story through the stage is a special feeling for me. In most scenarios we have to overcome something in order to achieve, move forward or really live. The challenges we, as Aboriginal people today and/or in this modern world, are faced with, are very different but also

theartscentregc.com.au

similar to anyone else, but the portrayal of this is not at the level it deserves. Having the opportunity to stimulate the wider community’s mindset is another way of shaping people’s perception; this has also been a motive behind my involvement and inspired my creative involvement. Does any part of Jim’s story come from real experience? There are definitely real moments through the portrayal of Jim’s life that ring true to my own experiences, however Jim’s whole story stems from a collective of fact and fictional stories, stereotypes and perceptions. I believe all sorts of audience members will relate to this Aboriginal young man. Jim’s story is somewhat universal, but his connection to something deeper, spiritual, cultural and authentic, will separate him from the mainstream to the evolved ‘New Black’, bringing the old and new into the future.

STAGE DANCE

En pointe with Queensland Ballet Last year, Queensland Ballet enchanted over 3000 Gold Coasters (plus thousands more around the state!) with the sold-out production of Cinderella. This year, the company brings another captivating ballet to our stage. Coppélia is choreographed by Greg Horsman.

Be swept up in the story of the eccentric Dr Coppélius and his invention of Coppélia, a life-like doll, who causes comic chaos between two young lovers, Franz and Swanilda. Setting the much-loved story in the small South Australian town of Hahndorf in the late 19th century, choreographer Greg Horsman has created a touching and witty ballet, with endearing characters inspired by our own history. With its joyful dance and the charming music of Léo Delibes, Coppélia will enchant people of all ages. ‘I have great respect and affection for traditional ballet productions, but I think it's important to give them a context that relates to our communities and audiences,’ says Horsman. ‘I began by looking at setting the story in a different place and period to the original setting. I also wanted to give Dr. Coppélius' character more context and background, and give him a reason for creating this life-like doll.’

10

CULTURE

‘In the scenario I have created, Dr Coppélius’ daughter tragically dies at sea during their journey to migrate from Germany to Australia. In his sadness and mourning, Dr Coppélius attempts to recreate his lost daughter through a life-like doll.’ Horsman said, ‘Queensland Ballet's dancers have been brilliant. They have shown great patience, good humour and initiative in realising this production. I'm very grateful to Li and Queensland Ballet for this fantastic opportunity to create my first full-length ballet back home in Australia.’ Horsman engaged a talented creative team to deliver his vision. Exquisite new sets and costumes have been designed especially for this production by Queensland Ballet's Resident Designer Noelene Hill and Melbourne-based Set Designer Hugh Colman. Lighting Designer Jon Buswell's designs bring the beautiful costumes and set to life.

‘The dancing is beautiful and elegant...’

Behind the tutu Queensland Ballet's new Coppélia is set in the small South Australian town of Hahndorf in the 1880s. Costume Designer Noelene Hill began by researching the historical dress of that time and place. Noelene has created a beautiful suite of complementary designs for the many different characters in the ballet. Each costume is built for movement and displays wonderful theatrical flair. The colour palette is a nod to the hues of the Australian countryside – from eucalypt green and earthy brown to the pale washed blue of a summer sky. Delightful splashes of bright colour highlight leading characters. The life-size Coppélia doll wears the only tutu in the ballet – and what a lovely creation it is. A deep rose pink bodice with ruched cream silk inserts, lace panel, velvet ribbon trim and short gathered sleeves tops a base of ruffled pink tulle overlaid with lace and beading.

Coppélia is one of the most popular and well-known ballets in the classical repertoire. Don’t miss the performances on Wednesday 20 May at 7pm, Thursday 21 May at 1.30pm and 7pm. Tickets are $64 for Adults, $55 for Concession, $49 per ticket for Adult groups of six or more or $35 for Students. Book at www. theartscentregc.com.au or (07) 5588 4000.

‘Greg Horsman will bring his flair for choreographing classical-style ballet to this traditional work, and his distinctly Australian scenario is perfectly suited to the delightful story. ‘This is a ballet that the whole family can enjoy. The dancing is beautiful and elegant, and Delibes’ score is stunning. Audiences will leave the theatre feeling uplifted and entertained by an evening of beautiful dancing and music.’ Li Cunxin Artistic Director Queensland Ballet

Cinematic Classics Queensland Symphony Orchestra brings us the magic of the big screen in Movie Masterpieces. It’s hard to imagine great movies without their equally great soundtracks. Modern composers have set the tone for countless films, including John Williams for Star Wars and the Harry Potter series, or Ennio Morricone for The Mission. QSO Director of Artistic Planning, Richard Wenn said, ‘Anytime a film director wants to tug at the heart strings or get audiences to sit on the edge of their seats - they use music to do it.’ ‘Whenever I hear the soundtrack from Lawrence of Arabia, I’m instantly transported to the desert and huge vistas of Peter O’Toole on his camel. There is a sense of freedom, grandeur and majesty in this music that really summarises the cinematography of David Lean.’ Concert composers have always been drawn to writing for the screen. Net result? Melodies so sublime, and orchestral showpieces so exhilarating, that they define the music of our times. This performance is part of Gold Coast Film Festival (page 38). See QSO: Movie Masterpieces, Friday 10 April at 7.30pm. Tickets are $54 for Adults, $47 for Concession or $30 for a Student or Child under 15 years. STAGE MUSIC

Around the World Acclaimed Austrian violinist Benjamin Schmid talks about his international musical journey with ACO2 You’ve worked with some of the world’s leading orchestras. Highlights? Playing with the Vienna Philharmonic with Seiji Ozawa in Japan, because Seiji was incredibly alert when accompanying and Vienna Philharmonic has glamour in the sound. I also enjoyed Rotterdam Philharmonic (and Vienna Philharmonic) with Valery Gergiev, because they are bound together like a family. Philharmonia London, not only for providing the most accurate first rehearsals (under Roger Norrington, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Frans Brüggen), Concertgebouw Amsterdam for the greatest atmosphere in their hall, and definitely Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) for being the most up-to-time chamber orchestra of today! Perfection, spirit, knowhow of styles, challenging programming, perfect organisation — just like it should be! Can you tell us some of the works you’ve selected, and how they relate to the theme ‘Around the World’? I chose Bach’s E major concerto for being a most classy classic, and it unfolds a second movement which is a notated improvisation of the solo violin over a bass obstinate in c# minor, which is eternal in its incredible beauty and quiet longing.

14

CULTURE

I have always been a fan of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence – very few composers can build up energy as compelling and merciless and huge and beautiful as Tchaikovsky, and to experience that with an elite ensemble like the ACO will be an essential sensation! Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings is as popular as it is beautiful and it takes us to the music of the United States. The Metropoles Suite by Austrian jazz composer Herbert Berger connects several worlds: the tradition of chamber music in Europe with American jazz; in the second movement we experience some tango feel, and the third movement displays a charming ‘Musette’, inspired by French Manuche music. All is wrapped up in exquisite ensemble arranging – with fascinating harmonies, forms, sounds. I am very much looking forward to performing that piece, as it shows my true passion for jazz arrangements – I will also improvise on those charts – and it features a very accessible but classy contemporary composer. This will be the first time ACO2 has performed at our Centre. Can you give our audiences some background on this extraordinary ensemble?

I will be working with ACO2 for the first time, but as far as I know, professional ACO players join with young graduates – so it should be a most inspiring mix of experience and fire! What would you like audiences to take away from the experience of this program? My aim is always that people walk out of my concerts just a bit happier than when they came in. What did you want to be when you were growing up? Either Violinmaker – I loved to be in the violin workshop and smell fresh wood, or violinist. Sorry not very surprising. Who would play you in the film of your life? Kevin Spacey, of course. Needs to practice the violin before, though. Experience Around the World with Benjamin Schmid and ACO2 on Tuesday 19 May from 6.30pm (refreshments are served before 7.30pm performance) in the Paradise Showroom. Tickets are $64 for Adults, $55 for Concession, $49 per ticket for group of six or more, or $35 for Students. Book at www.theartscentregc. com.au or (07) 5588 4000.

Mason & Hamlin concerts Piano lovers can experience world-class classical concerts featuring leading Australian and international musicians in the Mason & Hamlin concert series. ‘With diverse programming and electrifying musicians, the Mason & Hamlin series will suit anyone from the person wanting to explore the world of classical music for the first time, to the most seasoned and knowledgeable concert goer,’ says Stewart Kelly, Pianist and Artistic Director.

Music From the Horrors of War

Natasha Vlassenko

On the eve of Anzac day the Mason & Hamlin season opens with a concert exploring music inspired by the horrors of war. Few topics have so captivated composers and in this deeply moving program, two of the greatest chamber works ever composed are book ends to the Queensland premiere of new songs by Australia’s most famous living composer, Elena Kats-Chernin, based on war letters and poetry. Many of Queensland's finest string players including Conservatorium Head of Strings Michele Walsh and senior University of Queensland lecturers Patricia Pollett and Patrick Murphy will take part.

Making her debut in the Mason & Hamlin series is the charismatic and poetic Russian pianist Natasha Vlassenko, the current Head of Keyboard at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. ‘I have not heard any pianist anywhere perform these Schubert impromptus with more beauty and grandeur and I am thrilled Natasha has agreed to include them in this program, alongside a youthful sonata of Mozart and three breathtakingly virtuosic works of the great Franz Liszt,’ says Stewart Kelly.

Fiesta de la Musica! After the smashing success of the inaugural Fiesta de la Musica last year, the festival of fine arts returns to enchant the Gold Coast this May. Celebrate the best of classical music with a range of ticketed and free events. There’s everything from Maestro information sessions, free lunchtime concerts and performances from some of Australia’s leading musicians. Coast-based musician, educator and administrator, Pamela Lowry, has once again been engaged to curate the festival. Pamela’s credentials in classical music and her extensive, long-term networks make her the ideal representative within the community. Pamela has assembled an extraordinary program this year, featuring local professional musicians and companies programmed alongside interstate guest artists and presenters. Says Pamela ‘I am delighted to be able to present a program of music where local professional musicians get to shine, where our Gold Coast community is able to participate in operatic and instrumental activities, gain a deeper understanding of how music is created, perform with guests artists and to enjoy quality performances. For our young musicians there are opportunities to be mentored in composition and performance and to perform for our community.’

Fiesta de la Musica also supports our local music groups including the Australian Society of Keyboard Music (ASKM), Music Teachers Association of Queensland (MTAQ), The Gold Coast City Choir and the Gold Coast Choir, a fantastic children’s choir. In this, the second Fiesta de la Musica, Benjamin Martin, a graduate of the prestigious Julliard School of Music, New York and now world-renowned pianist and composer will present a lecture on composing in partnership with the 2015 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and Gold Coast City Gallery. He will also present a masterclass for local piano players and teachers and a performance showcasing his skills and talent. Professional companies, Opera Queensland, Queensland Ballet and the Australian Chamber Orchestra will present wonderful programs and extras such as active workshops and learning opportunities for the Gold Coast . This year, the program has been divided into four sections.

STAGE COMEDY

On a tangent His exuberance, spontaneity and cerebral style have established Ross Noble as one of the world’s best-loved comedians. The master surrealist uses an infinite imagination and plenty of tomfoolery, which is sure to have audiences in fits of laughter. Noble has been performing since he was smuggled into his local comedy club at the age of 15 and has since developed an on-stage presence like no other. ‘Noble is comedy's great free-associator. Give him a line and he'll show you a tangent. Give him a stage and he'll digress for hours,’ said The Guardian. ‘If it's in the head, it comes out the mouth,’ says Noble . His skill however, is not in generating nonsense, but knowing how to use it. ‘I don't want people to think about what I'm doing… I want them to get lost in the show’. Domenic Cavendish of The Daily Telegraph described Ross as a ‘wizard-haired Geordie (who) remains in full possession of his nimble-witted, slacker-minded impro skills. One of comedy's greatest marvels.’ Go off on a tangent with Ross Noble’s Tangentleman on Sunday 5 April at 8pm in the Arts Theatre. Adult tickets are $46.90, Concession, Youth (15 - 17 years) and Group 10+ tickets are $42.90. Book at www.theartscentregc.com.au or phone (07) 5588 4000.

STAGE COMEDY

Razor-sharp and ready Nath Valvo joins the cast of this year’s Melbourne International Comedy

Festival Roadshow, arriving on our stage in May. You’ve seen him on The Project, ABC’s Dirty Laundry and the ABC Breaky Show, and heard him on the Saturday Morning Breakfast Show on Nova 100. He’s performed five solo stand-up shows including Fag / Hag, Walk of Shame, Grindr: A Love Story?, Almost 30 and Boy Next Door, to great critical and audience acclaim. Now, Nath Valvo brings his razor-sharp, bitchy and ballsy comedy to our stage. We talk to Nath about vegans, mothers’ groups and mean girls.

Describe yourself in three words. Hungry. Hyper. Happy. How did your comedy career start? When I first left high school I started a comedy show with two mates called The Shambles on Channel 31. We did that for a few years then started performing live shows – then I pulled a Beyonce and decided to give solo stand up a crack! What’s the best gig you ever performed? I performed at a function for a mothers’ group! There were 300 of them who had hit the white wine hard at 11am. They went a bit crazy – I felt like Michael Bublé. It was amazing. What’s your favourite movie quote? God this is a hard one! Most of them are from miscellaneous Meryl Streep movies or Mean Girls. Let’s go with ‘You can’t sit with us.’ What would you be doing if you weren’t a comedian? I’ve never really thought about that because if you have a plan B it means you end up using it – so just in case something goes horribly wrong with my career let’s say plan B is to BE A BILLIONARE! What can audiences expect from one of your gigs? I love ripping in to things I hope everyone else is talking about with their friends! At the moment I’m getting stuck into wanky diet crazes like vegans and paleo eating. I’ll always love sharing my awkward bedroom stories too—bring Nanna along—she’ll learn a few things!

‘I’ll always love sharing my awkward bedroom stories too—bring Nanna along —she’ll learn a few things!’ In your 2013 show Almost Thirty, you admitted you’d never had an actual happy birthday. How was your thirtieth? Turning 30 is every gay man’s worst nightmare! I’m now zombie status being 31! I spent an obscene amount of money on my 30th party and had Kylie, GaGa and Beyonce drag queens perform! It was amazing! Even Dad had a ball. Who would play you in a movie of your life? Probably some little teenage girl actress. Has Dakota Fanning aged yet? What are you working on right now? Right now I’m in my hotel room trying to work out how to change the channel because Dr Phil is on. But my new show for this year is called Happy Idiot and I am busy writing and getting that together to hit Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival! Exciting and scary.

Where can Indie Season take you? If you’ve thought about creating your own theatre work for our Independent Season, our black box theatre The Space is the perfect place to stretch your theatrical wings. And you never know where it might take you. Last year, Hayden Jones and Sam Foster brought us the brilliantly dark play The Pillowman as part of the 2014 Independent Season. With a capable team and a slick production, the play was a box office success. Fast forward to 2015, and Sam and Hayden have established a new company, Shock Therapy Productions, and have just secured a deal with The Brisbane Powerhouse to present The Pillowman in The Visy in August. ‘If it wasn't for the support The Arts Centre Gold Coast has given us, and taking a chance on me with my application to be a first time producer doing a controversial

underground piece, this new opportunity wouldn't have been possible,’ says Hayden. ‘The Independent Season is a great platform and having that resource really makes a difference. The ongoing belief in us helps to make our dreams a reality. ‘ Last year, the Independent Season included productions in The Space, including The Pillowman, the haunting Ruby Moon, the specially-commissioned Hotel Beche de Mer and the wild road trip tale Mercy Thieves. These plays provided writing, acting, directing and behind-the-scenes opportunities for dozens of theatre makers from the Gold Coast and the wider South East Queensland region. We are now seeking expressions of interest for our 2016 Independent Season. Emerging and established independent theatre makers from the Gold Coast and surrounding regions, including Brisbane and

beyond, are encouraged to apply. If you have a full work in mind, great! We can support you to bring that vision to life with professional marketing, ticketing, technical support and more. Or if you’ve got an idea that needs some work, apply for our Works In Progress program. We’ll give you time, space and professional support to bring your creative vision closer to performance standard. Expressions of interest close Tuesday 30 June. Please contact Associate Producer Vicki Buenen on (07) 5588 4036 or buenen@theartscentregc.com.au for an application pack. Catch Sam and Hayden’s production of The Forwards in early July. SCREEN

Coming to the Arts Cinema The Age of Adaline

Woman In Gold

National Theatre Live: Man Vs Superman

(April)

(May)

(June / July)

After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

Woman in Gold is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting The Lady in Gold. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.

Academy Award® nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler’s List, Oedipus at the National Theatre) plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Bernard Shaw’s witty, provocative classic. Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dream-debate, heaven versus hell, ensues. A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live.

Photography and writing celebrated The national art calendar is bulging with prizes and competitions. Some come and go and others grow to become appreciated as integral to the cultural landscape. The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award has become a highly anticipated event, not only for the Gold Coast but for the national art community. In an age of photographic saturation, both artists and audiences relish the opportunity to produce and see photographic prints in the flesh – to consider their scale, presentation method and surface quality, and appreciate artistic ideas and intentions that reference the history of the medium as well as those that take us in new directions. Our lively public programs that always

accompany the exhibition, offer the chance for audiences to meet artists, learn new skills and also participate in debates that seek to capture the current issues of the day for photography. This year is a very special one for the history of the Award as we will launch a new publication Prizing Diversity. Published by Thames & Hudson, it documents the history of the Award as well as the two other cultural prizes that the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation has supported - for poetry and literature. These prizes have been administered and also now supported by Griffith University through the School of Humanities. The texts and photography will be brought together in this unique and beautiful

publication, enabling us to consider the overall character and legacy of the generous and visionary support of the Foundation. The book also highlights the close co-operation over the years between the University and Gold Coast City Gallery with our collaborative programming. Essays by eminent writers Frank Moorehouse and leading photography Curator Alasdair Foster reflect on the legacy of the awards, and Nigel Krauth and Virginia Rigney assess their history and character. It is the breadth and diversity of this award that resonates with audiences and artists alike. Across thirteen exhibitions, 682 photographic works by more than 400 artists from across the nation have been exhibited.

War and Peace

As Australia marks 100 years since the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli, local collaborative Australian Creative Exchange has organised a new exhibition War and Peace to instigate a dialogue between artists from Turkey, New Zealand and Australia. There were more than 80,000 Turkish casualties in World War 1, and we are honoured to have distinguished artists from Hacettepe University in Ankara travelling to the Gold Coast and exhibiting their work. With peace comes an opportunity not only to enhance our understanding of each other’s culture and lifestyle through art, but also for the Gold Coast community to experience the cultural diversity exemplified in this exhibition. Australian artists: Judy Anderson, Stephen Baxter, Antone Bruinsma, Lainie Cooper, Tony Dowers, Christian Halford, Madeline Hodge, Margie Huebner, Dieter Kloeckner, Michaela Kloeckner, Myrung Muir, Robert Todonai and Mark Warne. New Zealand artists: Amelia Batchelor, Dean Cogle, Lynette Harvey and Mark Wilson. Cook after Baghdad In 2011 Archibald-winning artist Ben Quilty was sent to Afghanistan as an Australian Official War Artist. Of the experience he reflected, ‘I was intrigued to see young men facing their ultimate fear and their own mortality amidst the very confronting human creation of war.’ This sculpture Cook after Baghdad was cast at the Australian Bronze Foundry in Dee Why shortly after his return. It references Australia’s history and sites of conflict from the English explorer Captain James Cook landing in 1770 to the more recent Iraq war. The size of the sculpture is the same as the Saddam Hussein monument which was in 2003 toppled by the Iraqi people and the US Army in Baghdad.

Greenstones on golden shores Exploring the stories and creative practices of New Zealand Maori living on the Gold Coast, Gold and Greenstone looks at points of engagement and overlap, of cultures colliding and intertwining, where ‘greenstones’ wash up on golden shores. Using the metaphor of the greenstone, a symbol of cultural prestige and economic power, this exhibition considers the art practices of six New Zealand Maori artists who live and have strong family connections to the Gold Coast. As a loose collective, these artists represent the first mass transpacific migration of Maori communities to international shores since the very first fleets of ancient navigators began to traverse the

Pacific Ocean from Eastern Polynesia to Aotearoa, New Zealand, over eight hundred years ago. Significant amongst the issues explored in this exhibition is the challenge of retaining language, traditions and cultural practices away from home, as well as the difficulties of establishing an amicable and meaningful engagement with the Indigenous peoples of Australia. Exhibiting artists: George Nuku, DLT – Darryl Lee Thompson, Turumakina Duley, Matty Te Paea, Chermene Castle and Reuben Friend.

Pipe dreams and beyond Visitors to Gold Coast City Gallery may remember local artist Erica Gray from her first solo exhibition Pipe Dreams where she turned the gallery walls inside-out with a quirky and fun exhibition of soft sculpture and paintings in 2012. Since then Erica has continued to exhibit and has recently been recognised as a finalist in the prestigious World of Wearable (WOW) Art Awards show in New Zealand. This was her third entry into the Awards, with her first entry in 2012 winning her design section and in 2013 she also received an Honourable Mention. We caught up with Erica to find out more about her artwork, inspiration and plans for 2015. How do you use your personal experiences to shape your art? My working history began in the fashion industry, so I have acquired a lot of experience

with materials, pattern making and sewing and skills which I often utilise to produce much of my sculptural work today. On a personal level art gives me much more freedom to produce more expressive work that often references my personal experiences, moods, style and ideas. The costumes you have created for the WOW Awards are incredibly detailed. Is making costumes a time-consuming process? Yes. Sometimes it can take weeks just for the initial design concept, before you even get into the production stage. Once I have started constructing the piece, the amount of time needed is dependent on the complexity of the piece and it’s not unusual to spend months working on one piece. Deadlines are often the best motivator to having a project completed by a specific date and if it means working late and on weekends to get it finished, well that’s just what you do.

How does exhibiting wearable art differ from exhibiting in a Gallery? In the gallery space, your work is static against white walls; the setting is often minimal, without distraction and you can really take your time to absorb the display, allowing whatever message the work might have to seep through. Wearable art on the other hand, and specifically the WOW show, is a spectacular, almost frenzied event - the music, light effects, choreographed performances, models, costumes and wearable and art pieces. It’s a two-hour long, non-stop show filled with extravagant sights in which your wearable garment emerges, displayed within a specifically choreographed sequence. Seeing my art worn on the body and transformed by the energy of the performer is always a jaw-dropping, awe-infused experience and I have become quite obsessed with the WOW show and experience ever since!

‘On a personal level art gives me much more freedom...’ This year is set to be busy with Erica hard at work on her paintings, sculpture and wearable art pieces, while also exploring new technologies such as 3D printers and hand held plastic extruder techniques. To follow Erica’s work, check out the 2nd Tamworth Textile Triennial at Gosford Regional Gallery and her wearable art piece VapourNaut will be on display at the World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum in NZ. You can also catch her soft sculpture works at the Weswal Gallery and Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery.

I Am Jack One in four* Australian school students have reported being bullied at at school. Social media allows bullies to harass their victims from anywhere at any time. Equipping our children with ways to combat bullying is explored in I Am Jack, a stage show adapted by Monkey Baa Theatre Company from the book written by Susanne Gervay. Jack is smart, funny and is being bullied. What starts as an off-thecuff joke during a handball competition, soon turns into a set of circumstances whereby Jack is no longer safe in the playground. But with the use of self-expression through photography, Jack begins to make sense of his world; of his relationships with others, and most importantly, with himself. This one-man show explores the insidious taunting and teasing that bullies inflict on their victims and the roles that family and schools can play in responding. Jack takes us on a touching and sometimes comical journey as he moves from victim to victor. So how does a stage show tackle the ongoing problem of bullying? It encourages children to stop, think, ask questions and become advocates. Last year, I Am Jack completed a tour of the USA, where it was very well received. There was a definite point in the play where the children stopped laughing and became silent. They got that it was not funny anymore. What was especially wonderful were the conversations after the play. ‘I was bullied and no one cared’, ‘Why do people bully?’, ‘What can we do to stop bullies?’ Author Susanne Gervay’s inspiration for writing I Am Jack stemmed from experiencing bullying herself – as a victim. ‘I remember the time I was afraid to go to school because ‘the gang’ surrounded me and stole my lunch. No one played with me. It was lonely and scary. I didn’t feel I could ask my parents for help. They were both working so hard and tired all the time, so how could I bother them?’ says Gervay. ‘I wrote I Am Jack for my family, the people I care about and for you.’ Experience I Am Jack with your children on Tuesday 26 May at 10.30am or 12.45pm, Wednesday 27 May at 10.30am or 12.45pm, Thursday 28 May at 12.45pm or 6.00pm or Friday 29 May at 10.30am in the Arts Theatre. All tickets are $19.50, or purchase a Family Group (2 Adults and 2 Children) for $59. Student group tickets are $12.50pp. Book at www.theartscentregc.com.au or (07) 5588 4000. For 8-14 year olds. Please note: This production is not suitable for ages 7 and under.

Educating kids about bullying THINK before you act. Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it hurtful? What would posting this say about me? IGNORE nasty posts and comments. Just delete them and move on — the bully has the problem, not you. BLOCK nasty people from your networks. They add nothing to your life. Shut them out of it. TALK to someone you trust about what has happened. Professional help is also available. ACT to help others. Step in if you see someone being victimised and let bullies know what they’re doing is not cool, clever or funny. It’s just nasty. Source: The Gold Coast Bulletin, 21 March, 2014

Young artist development Engaging young people in visual arts offers lifelong benefits. Last year, with philanthropic support, Gold Coast City Gallery was able to run a series of programs to inspire some of our city’s most promising and enthusiastic young artists. Gold Coast City Gallery has long been aware of the inherent value in connecting with young people as our future audience. Programs for young people are developed in response to the Gallery’s changing exhibition program, and can help to build a lifelong interest in the Arts and the predisposition to engage in cultural activity. The Gallery presents a range of art programs for young people to further engage them with key exhibitions. Importantly, we are connecting young people with artists, so they can learn technical skills, develop critical and conceptual thinking, generate creative ideas, and identify career pathways into the arts. Three Art Immersion Days were held last year for local high school students. Our inaugural Photo Fanatics was presented in

theartscentregc.com.au

conjunction with the 2015 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, and participants worked with two exciting young photographers to develop new skills and ideas for creative expression. The Saltwater Project invited students to collaborate with three Indigenous artists connected with our major exhibition Saltwater Country. There were some incredible outcomes from this Immersion Day and, importantly, the young people gained valuable knowledge and understanding about Indigenous culture and local community. Our annual Energies Immersion Day offers graduating high school student artists the chance to work alongside contemporary artists across a range of media, and have real discussions about ways in which they

might continue their art practice beyond high school. With the help of philanthropic donations, the Centre can continue to provide valuable artistic experiences for our young people. This year, contributions from Benefactors will be put towards mentoring opportunities, free programs and even a School’s Out Residency Program, focused on immersing a class of students in Centre activities for a full school week. Have you considered supporting the Centre with a donation? Your support can make a lasting impact. For ways to donate, simply visit our website or contact the Development team on (07) 5588 4046. EVENTS

Glitter is coming to the strip! The Arts Centre Gold Coast has taken the lead on creating an inclusive new festival, showcasing the fabulous, and celebrating all things gay. Culture spoke with the Glitter Advisory Committee to the get the down low. What is Glitter? It's a week-long celebration of arts and culture beginning on September 28 and climaxing over the Labour Day long weekend in early October. The program will include cabaret, theatre, art gallery displays, and films. There's a race day planned at the Gold Coast Turf Club which is destined to become a signature event. There'll also be a marketta around The Arts Centre lake with live performers and street vendors. Do you think the city needs its own gay and lesbian festival? The Gold Coast is finally coming of age and it's starting to show its own identity. With maturity comes this need for people to form a community and that's the Festival’s main goal, to bring the community together and show everyone that we're here. Do you feel that sense of community is lacking? In essence it was here many years ago but it disappeared. There were no venues and no focal point and it simply disintegrated. There's certainly plenty of people living here and they've got nowhere to go or meet so Glitter's aim is to fix that through a program of cultural and social events.

Has the committee had experience in organising similar events? Glitter Advisory Committee is made up of an eclectic group of professionals with a plethora of community networks and skills. The Chairman Peter Skillicorn has worked on Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and was on the DIVA board which organised the Drag Industry Variety Awards. It has now been running in Sydney for over 25 years. Other strengths are in media, events and entertainment. Do you think the gay and lesbian community on the Gold Coast needs an event like Glitter? Yes! The community has provided enough anecdotal feedback to warrant the event. They have been looking for something to bring them together. Glitter will offer a variety of performances and social events so people can pick and choose what they like.

How important is it for The Arts Centre Gold Coast to foster local talent? We've seen through other events at The Arts Centre that there is so much local talent. Through Glitter they now have a new platform and an opportunity to develop their talent and showcase it. Is Glitter just for the gay and lesbian community? No, it's not. It's an all-encompassing, inclusive community event and that's what we're striving to achieve. Certainly some events will appeal to different people but it's a festival for the whole community.

Glitter Festival begins on Monday 28 September to Monday 5 October. Full program available Monday 3 August at www.theartscentregc.com.au.

Why is The Arts Centre staging Glitter? The Arts Centre Gold Coast is passionate about providing unique programming platforms and opportunities for artists and community alike. Glitter is also supported by City of Gold Coast, and numerous industry and community stakeholders. It has a solid foundation for growth and support.

OFFSTAGE

Cultural Precinct Stage 1 set for 2016 start Detailed design for Stage 1 of the city’s muchanticipated Gold Coast Cultural Precinct is underway, with construction set to start early in 2016. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has announced that this first stage of the 16.9 hectare precinct at Evandale is planned for completion in time to host a wide range of civic, cultural and artistic events ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games™. ‘Stage 1 will be an exciting start to our cultural precinct,’ Mayor Tate said. ‘It will deliver outstanding facilities for visual and performing arts and show the way for what is still to come at the precinct.’ Stage 1 will include: • A versatile outdoor performance space – with a striking ‘Splash’ stage concept capable of hosting everything from cinema and fashion parades to headline concerts • Riverside Hub - adapting Council’s existing Riverside Building to accommodate a transitional art gallery, administration, civic reception space, potential creative tenancy and café • Initial Artscape works – connecting Stage 1 facilities and commencing the enhancement of Evandale Lake Mayor Tate described the Splash concept as a uniquely Gold Coast response to the city’s need for a versatile outdoor performance space. The concept, emerging from the proposed grassed amphitheatre like a giant water splash from the adjacent Nerang River, will be subjected to detailed design development over the coming months to ensure it can deliver a versatile performance and activity space. Its form could evolve further. This concept comes from ARM’s Stage 1 design work over the past 12 months and follows market sounding of local and national event promoters. They have tailored the amphitheatre concept to ensure this will be

CULTURE

a well-used venue, activated year-round with events, entertainment, concerts and cinema. ‘The Gold Coast has the artistic talent and the climate, and the cultural precinct has the best location with views to Surfers Paradise. Now, by 2018 we’ll also have a fantastic outdoor stage which is a tourist drawcard in its own right.’ Stage 1 initial concepts were unveiled in February, along with a draft Masterplan for the overall precinct. The Masterplan refines the international design competition-winning concept by ARM Architecture and Topotek1 and will guide its staged delivery over the coming 10 – 15 years. While retaining all the key elements of the winning concept, the refined Masterplan also integrates allied uses into the precinct. Previously confined to a defined area abutting Bundall Road, these allied uses are now nestled among the cultural facilities to encourage greater day/night visitation and activity and make the precinct more sustainable to build and operate. Allied uses identified could include an art hotel, media and educational facilities, creative industries, residential accommodation and cafes. Parallel with design is planning for a world-class program of artistic and cultural events, exhibitions and celebrations. The Arts Centre Gold Coast has been working closely with Council and ARM Architecture and Topotek1 to ensure that the precinct will become a must-visit destination, providing new opportunities for local artists and creative industries. Recipe of the season Our Café Chef Tyron Meade shares a delicious dish for you to make at home, or order from the current Café Arts menu. Says Tyron, ‘The finished dish is an emulsification which is a balance between the oil and the stock that should stick to the pasta. This will carry the flavour with each mouthful.’

Prawn, chilli, garlic, caper and dill linguini with lime and olive oil Serves 4 2 x long red chilli, finely chopped 8 x cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 x tblsp baby capers (rinsed) 1 x lime juice and zest 1 x sml bunch dill, chopped 1 x sml bunch flat leaf parsley, chopped 600 gm Australian green prawn meat (deveined and chopped) 150 mls chicken stock 60mls olive oil 375 gm egg linguini (best quality you can find)

On a low heat sauté the chilli, garlic, caper without colour until soft. Increase heat and add prawns and hot chicken stock, reduce to a glaze as the prawns cook, then add the herbs, hot cooked pasta, lime juice and zest. Season and toss to combine, serve immediately.

The perfect backdrop to say ‘I do’

Centre News Award for Life Benefactor

As plans for the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct development move forward, Anna Carroll has been appointed to the newly-created role of Precinct Transition Manager. Anna will manage the Centre’s involvement in the project and act as the main liaison with City of Gold Coast. ‘I’m thrilled to be working towards this brilliant new precinct for the Gold Coast,’ says Anna. ‘Not only will the first stage upgrades provide huge advantages for the performing and visual arts communities, but the new spaces will be activated with events that all Gold Coast residents can enjoy.’ Anna’s role will include conducting research, developing new creative partnerships and identifying future resource needs for the precinct. She will implement transitional strategies and liaise between The Arts Centre’s team, City of Gold Coast project staff and precinct consultants to ensure the project milestones are adhered to. Anna brings a wealth of experience to the position, having held various senior management roles in sport, public infrastructure, health and human resources. During her time as CEO of Netball Queensland, Anna was a finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards. Previously, Anna was Project Director of the Gold Coast Light Rail project, and received an Australia Day Award for her services to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Anyone who has enjoyed one of Barbara Corrigan’s gallery excursions will know what a fabulous event she organises! Barbara is renowned for organising group cultural excursions and events on the Gold Coast. In January, she was recognised for her efforts when she received the Cultural Award at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony held at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. More than 50 community members were nominated for the awards, which are across six categories. Barbara Corrigan is a Life Benefactor of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, and together with her husband Patrick Corrigan AM, has made a significant contribution to the cultural development of our city.
