The Arts Centre Gold Coast Annual Report 2010-11

Chariman’s Report

Chairman’s Report

On behalf of the Board and staff of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, it gives me great pleasure to present the Annual Report for the year ending 30 June 2011. Over the past 12 months The Arts Centre Gold Coast has worked hard to build upon the success of the previous year whilst being mindful of the tough economic conditions that look set to linger around the Gold Coast for several more years. With 434,875 people attending 5,827 events, The Arts Centre once again proved that residents and visitors to the Gold Coast were determined to congregate, celebrate and participate in the life of the Centre. Throughout the year The Arts Centre was the recipient of over $200,000 in Queensland Government funding which enabled the continued delivery of artist development initiatives delivered via our Regional Stages program. This funding was also used to complete the remaining items of the Centre’s annual capital development program which included a complete refurbishment of The Basement and installation of new retractable seating in The Space. Both projects have greatly enhanced the live theatre-going experience for audiences and improved the operational efficiency of both areas for artists and staff alike. Beyond the bricks and mortar, The Arts Centre is host to numerous business functions and events. The current economic climate has proved challenging for many local businesses and a flow-on effect has resulted in the Centre recording an 18% (225) decrease in non performing arts events and a 44% (28,533) reduction in attendance to these activities. To complement economic stimulus initiatives happening at a local level, The Arts Centre is setting its sights on attracting new national and international events to the region. Attendance in February to the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo (AIME) in Melbourne and additional familiarisation tours by interstate conference organisers are part of a medium term business growth strategy. Preliminary bookings have already been confirmed for next financial year and it is expected that more will follow as business confidence returns. In regards to long-term growth, the need to develop a new cultural precinct for the Gold Coast must become a top priority for the region and to this end the Board has worked hard to support ongoing strategic planning for this important project. Representation on project committees and stakeholder consultation has ensured that the needs of audiences and artists continue to be a deciding factor in determining the project’s outcome. The Board remains committed to ensuring that the Gold Coast gets the quality cultural facilities it deserves and I look forward to keeping you updated on future developments.

Our growing chorus of supporters continues to be our greatest asset. These include The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast who, under President Wendy Spencer, have provided significant financial and in-kind support as we work towards our common goal of enriching the lives of the Gold Coast community through the arts. Throughout the year our Benefactor numbers have doubled and I would like to thank those Benefactors who have been with us for many years and those who have recently joined The Arts Centre’s family of Benefactors. Your support and company at our events is both appreciated and enjoyed. In July 2010 we were proud to bestow the title of inaugural Life Benefactors on Pat and Barbara Corrigan, and Win Schubert on behalf of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation, for their outstanding philanthropic generosity, mainly in substantially building the collection of Gold Coast City Gallery. My thanks also to our volunteers, who work tirelessly in every area of our organisation to deliver the best service possible to our community. I would like to thank and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the staff of The Arts Centre lead by General Manager Destry Puia. All have shown tremendous dedication and passion throughout the year. Finally. I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Gold Coast City Council who, under the direction of Mayor Ron Clarke and CEO Dale Dickson, has continued to support the endeavours of the Board and staff of The Arts Centre. As a new Local Government election year looms it is both reassuring and invigorating to know that we will be entering a new political era on such strong and proven foundations.

Kerry Watson Chairman of the Board of Directors

The Arts Centre Gold Coast Annual Report 2010-11

General Manager’s Report

General Manager’s Report

During the past year it has been The Arts Centre’s resolute commitment to support local artist development. With this at the forefront of our minds, we set about creating a new level of creative engagement through our Regional Stages Program. Jointly funded by the Australia Council, Arts Queensland and Gold Coast City Council, this initiative has enabled The Arts Centre to create a regional artistic playground that focuses on the creative process. The result has been a year filled with exciting, new, and intimate programs. These include the commissioning of works such as COSI by Soapbox Theatre Company, working with local homeless and disadvantaged men in It’s Great to be Homeless, partnering with Queensland Theatre Company to deliver youth performance opportunities and presenting master classes to local seasoned directors. Our mainstage program continued to provide a mix of artistic offerings catering to a broad section of the community. From the elegance of Queensland Ballet’s Swan Lake to the extravaganza of Opera Queensland’s The Merry Widow, from the comedy madness of The Umbilical Brothers Heaven by Storm to an intimate evening with U.S singer songwriter Toni Childs. The Showroom also proved to be the perfect place for our intimate music series, playing host to some of the most adventurous and eclectic artists around including The Ben Winkleman Trio, Miguel, Lady Torpedo, the Big Swing Brothers and Lulo Reinhardt. In total more than 32,369 people attended 238 arts performances and programs held at The Arts Centre. A major redevelopment of The Basement was made possible through Arts Queensland and Gold Coast City Council funding and provided this space with a new lease of life. The result was that our regular weekly programs of Unplugged, Comedy and Live & Intimate experienced strong attendance throughout the year. In addition to this, two new Basement partnership programs, Life Changing Documentaries and the Indie Film Network nights, were developed to cater to an independent film audience. These initiatives have resulted in new audiences coming to enjoy our offerings in The Basement. Back in the main cinemas, more than 132,292 people continued to enjoy high-end art films in what is arguably the Gold Coast’s most enjoyable cinema setting. The phenomenal success of The King’s Speech, The Girl Who Played with Fire and Another Year ensured that The Arts Centre had a consistent flow of people both day and night. Our commitment to support and develop Gold Coast talent was articulated in both the performing arts and visual arts agendas. Our Regional Stages program, now in its second year, is designed to enable performing artist development at every level. From novice to expert, the opportunities for active participation were diverse and included director master

classes, junior and senior theatre residencies, community choir workshops and co-presentations. Meanwhile in the City Gallery, more than 85 local artists were represented in group or prize exhibitions while more than 41,772 people attended 63 exhibitions and programs held during the year. A particular highlight was the ground-breaking exhibition, Now and When, which covered new territory with its three-dimensional video presentation coming to the Gold Coast after the inaugural showing at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. Engravings of native flora by Joseph Banks, watercolours by acclaimed Aboriginal artist Albert Namatijira and the historically charged photographs of legendary Australian photographer Robert MacFarlane complemented the local, national and international flavour of our gallery program. All this plus the ongoing growth of the city’s $15 million art collection has meant that Gold Coast City Gallery is now truly bursting at the seams. Our accomplishments throughout the year are indicative of the incredible support that we have around us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous benefactors and growing legion of volunteers who continue to ensure that our customers receive a service of care that is second to none. Also, I would like to thank all our staff who continue to make The Arts Centre such an incredible place to be, our Board members for their ongoing guidance and in particular Chairman Kerry Watson, for his leadership and counsel. Finally, a word of thanks to all the artists and audience members who chose The Arts Centre as your place to gather, share and connect. The opportunity for us to play a part in this relationship is perhaps the greatest achievement of them all.

Destry Puia General Manager

Under the Regional Stages Program, The Arts Centre Gold Coast, in association with Gold Coast City Council’s Cultural Development Unit, has developed programs to promote The Arts Centre as an accessible venue for Gold Coast artists, performers and audiences alike with particular emphasis on targeting new programming initiatives and workshops for segments of the community. Cavill Ave Brisbane-based choreographer Claire Marshall was invited to adapt and expand upon her work Slow Dive to reflect the Gold Coast’s nightclub scene. The work, renamed Cavill Avenue, explored the good, the bad and the ugly side of the night clubs found around the Cavill Avenue area of Surfers Paradise. It explored how human behaviour in all its forms changes with the anonymity provided by these clubs, how to escape from the more disturbing elements and how to survive! It covered issues such as drug usage, excessive alcohol consumption and sexual abuse and explored the agendas of the DJ, bar staff, club owner, and punters. It was a challenging, confronting and very realistic interpretation of the local club culture that attracted a new, younger audience. What was particularly significant was the number of first time attendees. Dancing with Bach This was the third new work by Lucid Dance and was created at The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in June 2011 following their receipt of a Fresh Ground residency. Set intimately with a small cast of three young dancers, the work was choreographed by Louise Deleur with internationally renowned Baroque cellist Louise King providing the accompaniment. Lucid Dance Theatre offered a two hour workshop opportunity for dancers 12+ years to work with Artistic Director Louise Deleur. The workshop, which was presented in addition to the performances, explored contemporary and classical dance techniques and the creative process of developing new choreographic material and provided aspiring Gold Coast dancers and choreographers with a unique development opportunity.

Assisting in the development of innovative new work across a range of performance art forms

Appalling Behaviour While in Paris in 2005, Adelaide playwright Stephen House, with no contacts, no funds and not being able to speak a word of French, set about immersing himself in the life of the city. It is from his contacts and experiences during this time that the one-man play Appalling Behaviour emerged. It is about the discomfort many people feel when they encounter disadvantage; about people’s perceptions of the behaviour of marginalised people; about homelessness; about mental illness and about people’s self-determination. Stephen spent a week at the Gold Coast prior to the performance season researching homelessness in this community and speaking with a number of organisations. The work also provided a synergy for The Turtles Project for homeless men conducted by the Centre in association with The MOT Club (Men Out There). It’s Great to be Homeless - Turtles Project The MOT (Men Out There) Club has been engaging with the homeless and disadvantaged on the Gold Coast through theatre and music workshops since October 2010. Following the receipt of a Regional Arts Development Fund Grant through Gold Cost City Council’s Cultural Development Unit in April 2011, the MOT Club commenced The Turtles Project with a series of workshops geared to the creation of work-in-progress performances of Its Great to be Homeless at The Arts Centre on Friday 22 July 2011. The show’s principal participants were socially disadvantaged men who shared their personal stories with the audience. The group, under the professional artistic guidance of Project Director Dr Mike Foster, transformed their stories into monologues, sketches, musical interpretations and stand up comedy spots. The result was a showcase of work which reflected a mixture of genres and styles and added a dash of chaos - all designed to entertain while provoking the minds of the audience. Cosi This production of Cosi, by Australian Playwright Louis Nowra, was produced in association with Gold Coast company Soapbox Theatre Productions, a vibrant and innovative ensemble formed by a dedicated group of young Gold Coast based artists who are striving to strengthen and broaden the arts and arts practice in South East Queensland. Soapbox created a fresh take on the Nowra script, connecting the dots between political and social issues faced during the 1970’s with those of today.

Provide a range of professional development opportunities for Gold Coast artists and arts workers

Artist in Residence Following an application and interview process, involving The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Gold Coast City Council Cultural Development Unit staff, the 2011 Artist in Residence program was awarded to Monette Lee of Purple Pear Productions. The residency was for a period of three months with the Regional Stages contribution to the residency including: • Use of dedicated office space at The Centre • Business mentoring and professional development opportunities • An agreed allocation of rehearsal hours in The Space • Use of The Space for a performance season • Total financial funding to stage and tour the work following The Arts Centre’s season • Marketing, technical and administrative support and advice As the Centre’s Artist in Residence, Monette was given the opportunity to attend the April Long Paddock National Performing Arts Market held at The Arts Centre to assist her in developing an understanding of the touring opportunities available to companies and artists. To further develop her skills and enhance her reputation as a director, she was offered the opportunity to work as Assistant Director to Jennifer Flowers on the Youth Theatre Project. Director Master Classes In an exercise aimed at assisting Gold Coast directors to raise the bar on their directing expertise, the Centre contracted Jim Vile, who has more than 50 years of theatrical experience as a director, actor and lecturer and also a recipient of many Matilda Awards. Jim conducted workshops which provided ideas and methods on how to set-up actors for success; how to engage intuition and intellect and how to direct plays and musical works with greater artistic integrity. These vital skills instill the ability to approach a directorial task with greater confidence and engage with a specific methodology.

Junior Theatre Residency

Encourage the development and staging of works for and involving youth

QTC Junior Theatre Residency The first Junior Residency saw The Arts Centre collaborate with Queensland Theatre Company to offer, for the first time, an opportunity for Gold Coast theatre enthusiasts from 7 to 14 years, to learn a range of performance skills and to experience new activities from established professional facilitators. Developed exclusively for The Arts Centre Gold Coast, this five-day extension program offered development in dramatic acting, characterisation and voice. Students received vital coaching in performance, theatrical skills, promoting and encouraging self-worth and confidence-building in a safe and professional environment. Content areas included dramatic acting, comic characterisations and voice. QTC Senior Theatre Residency This program involved collaboration between The Arts Centre and Queensland Theatre Company to offer an opportunity for Gold Coast theatre enthusiasts aged from 15 to 24 years to learn a range of performance skills and to gain valuable insights into the industry from established professional facilitators. This was the first text-based residency at the Centre for this age group and originated from feedback received from youth involved with the traditional annual musical - the theatre-based summer school. The five-day extension program was held from 4th to 8th July and covered audition techniques, industry protocols, character creation and approaches to text. Twenty-four participants gained valuable skills in analysing narrative structure, exploring style and genre and language mastery. They were encouraged and taught techniques of creating memorable characters through developing an ear for conversation and an eye for real-life characters. Youth Theatre Project The 2011 Youth Theatre Project utilised the talents of highly acclaimed actress/director - Jennifer Flowers to the project, assisted by the Centre’s Artist in Residence, Monette Lee. The Good Doctor by Neil Simon was the work chosen. Fifteen applications from interested youth were received. Following an audition process, the successful applicants included:Tori Bailey (16); Tim Carroll (16); Thom Gardner (18); Asha Martin (24); John Vizcay-Wilson (21); Amanda-lee Weatherby (24). The actors rehearsed for five weeks leading up to the five-performance season which included a preview for Arts Centre Benefactors and Board members. The project gave participants an experience which was truly representative of a professional theatre situation.

Summer School 2011

Summer School 2011Beauty and the Beast

In 2011 The Arts Centre Gold Coast presented the much loved Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. Since 1998 the annual Summer School Musical has given many young Gold Coast people a unique opportunity to develop confidence, learn about teamwork and grow artistically and intellectually. The experiences gained from these Summer Schools have left lasting impressions on people of all ages. The Arts Centre Gold Coast was again proud to provide support and training to the local talent in the region. For the 2011 Summer Musical Beauty and the Beast, we assembled an experienced and professional team of creatives ensuring that participants received valuable development of their skills and interests. The Arts Centre acknowledges the support of Harvest Rain Theatre Company, Brisbane. We were proud to work with director, Tim O’Connor CEO/Director of Harvest Rain with the assistance of, Callam Mansfield, Choreographer and Jacqui Gaynor, Musical Director. Audiences of all ages were enthralled by the characters which were brought to life live on stage at The Arts Theatre. Audiences were transported to a lovely French provincial town where the beautiful Belle lives with her father, a dotty inventor. When her father doesn’t return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay she discovers that he is being held captive by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his and the ‘tale as old as time’ begins. How Belle tames the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation into a handsome prince, captures the imaginations of both young and old.

Gold Coast City Gallery

Developing and presenting high-quality exhibitions to diverse audiences Throughout the year, 25 exhibitions were presented ranging from the exquisite engravings of native flora by Joseph Banks; watercolours by acclaimed Aboriginal artist Albert Namatijira; the historically charged black and white documentary photographs of legendary Australian photographer Robert MacFarlane; the latest in contemporary art from emerging Gold Coast artists; and an extraordinary three-dimensional immersive video and photography installation direct from the Venice Architecture Biennale. Initiating and presenting exhibitions of national importance The exhibition Nobody knows - Simon Mee, Rob McHaffie and Anne Wallace presented new paintings and works on paper by three artists who are known for their evocative and ambiguously themed artworks. The exhibition was launched with a special High Tea event where each artist discussed their work. The 27th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award included work by 57 finalists from around the world. Australian artist Peter Cooley was announced as the winner of the $10,000 prize. Gold Coast City Gallery was the first venue in Australia for NOW AND WHEN: Australian Urbanism. This ground-breaking, three dimensional video exhibition was presented after the inaugural showing at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. The first part of the installation NOW, was a spectacular visualisation by leading architectural photographer John Gollings. Using the most innovative of three-dimensional photography techniques, Gollings presented an aerial view of three iconic Australian cities – Surfers Paradise, Melbourne and Sydney and in contrast, two Western Australian super mining pits which dramatically indicated where the wealth behind these urban forms has come from. The second part WHEN, presented proposals from leading innovative architects from across Australia who responded to a call to imagine an Australian city set in the distant future, 2050 and beyond. They were encouraged to draw from architecture’s capacity as an urban art, and of 128 entries the 17 selected scenarios had their ideas rendered in super real stereoscopic images by visualising company FloodSlicer.

Presenting significant travelling exhibitions Joseph Banks and the flora of the Australian east coast was toured by the Australian National Maritime Museum and provided a rare opportunity to view a selection of beautiful prints based on artist Sidney Parkinson’s drawings and watercolours produced on James Cook’s momentous first Pacific voyage in 1768. Produced in 1980 by Alecto Historical Editions and the Natural History Museum, London these exquisite prints were made from the cut copper printing plates that had laid in storage for over 200 years following the demise of Joseph Banks’ originally planned publication. Twelve Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland was a major touring exhibition drawing together a diverse range of work aiming to showcase the wealth of material held in regional collections. As an active participant in the project, a selection of work from the Gallery collection was included in the tour to 15 regional venues. Namatjira to Now from the Queensland Art Gallery provided audiences with an insight into the significant influence of aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira and the future generations who have continued to produce art from the Hermannsburg region. Since the 1960’s, Robert McFarlane has been an influential figure in Australian photographic practice and criticism. His photography is broad in scope and appeal, including the theatricality of Australian politics, the arts, social documentation, indigenous Australia and his own family. Robert McFarlane: Received Moments - Photography 19612009 was the first comprehensive survey of his work, revealing a myriad of stories and narratives that were both familiar and revealing for audiences. The exhibition was toured by Manly Art Gallery and Museum. Toured by the Institute of Modern Art, cantchant saw leading indigenous artist Vernon Ah Kee take on the iconic subject of the beach, casting a critical eye on its special role in forming Australian identity. Gold Coast locals were able to recognise Surfers Paradise beach in a spectacular three-screen video which included imagery of guns blasting dead boards (waterlogged surfboards) and Gold Coast-based Aboriginal pro-surfer Dale Richards tackling the waves, set to Warumpi

Band’s heart-thumping anthem Stompin Ground. Beautifullysculpted surfboards, decorated with North-Queenslandrainforest shield-designs and detailed renderings of Ah Kee’s family were also displayed amongst his bold text-works. The exhibition was also featured in Once Removed, the Australian group exhibition at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Mentoring local artists and displaying their work Predominantly through the use of the Foyer gallery and the Darkroom, Gold Coast City Gallery offers a regular program of solo exhibitions by local artists. Gold Coast artists have also featured in group exhibitions in the main gallery spaces. These exhibitions present significant professional development and exposure opportunities for artists, with catalogues produced and works of art being sold. Hosting public events also allows artists direct engagement with the community and media exposure. The following local artists presented work in solo exhibitions • • • • • • • •

Susan Buret & Nicola Moss Carolyn Cleak Stephanie Laine Linelle Stepto Michelle van Eps Fiona Kennedy-Altoft Donna Marcus Michael Aird

In addition over 85 local artists were represented in group or prize exhibitions including The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize, Energies and the Queensland College of Art Graduate exhibition. Gold Coast Ikebana, were invited to present displays of local flora in the Banks exhibition. Michael Airds presentation in Darkroom was called Woogoompha-My Country Swamp Country. Michael is an indigenous photographer and anthropologist and this exhibition profiled 10 years of going out into his local country of the Coomera and Nerang river system, camping and crabbing. Contemporary local artist Linelle Stepto was paired with the historical exhibition of Banks engravings to highlight the impact of feral animals on native fauna.

Presenting works from the collection in new ways The exhibition Bursting at the Seams, was a celebration of the continued wealth of acquisitions for the collection and to highlight the need for expanded facilities. This exhibition offered a densely hung exposé of some of our most recent acquisitions – a number of them gifts from Life Benefactors, Patrick Corrigan AM and Mrs Win Schubert, as well as individual artists who have also generously given works. These include two significant works on paper by Michael Johnson as well as photographic works by Shane Fitzgerald. Other significant gifts to the collection of works by important Australian artists, including Rick Amor, Annette Bezor, Max Dupain, Melinda Harper, Gary Shead, and Tim Storrier were included. Additionally, works that relate to the Gold Coast region, such as a suite of small paintings of local beach scenes by Peter O’Doherty, a Gold Coast Highway cottage by Robyn Sweaney and a series of prints about the changing highway landscape by young local artist Anna Carey were among astute recent purchases. Offering engaging art experiences for the community The Gallery presented a wide range of engaging public programs and activities for the community ranging from children’s Highlights included: education days to seminars and master classes. Highlights were: • Art Unpacked: Land and Place - an Education Kit for Australian Schools, based on works in the Collection was developed to give schools and teachers a high-quality teaching resource directly linking works in the collection to the curriculum. Support from The Australia Council, The George Alexander Foundation and Arts Queensland enabled the resource to be distributed free to Gold Coast schools and, for a small fee, to schools outside the area The kit was awarded a ‘highly commended’ in the prestigious Museums Australia Multi Media and Design Awards 2011. • A speed curating mentoring session for selected local artists involved in the Border Art Prize • An indepth engagement with Benowa State Primary School over two terms in partnership with Education Queensland in association with Now and When: Australian Urbanism • Energies immersion day where 35 year 12 students from across the coast spent a day with three professional artists supported by ADFAS Gold Coast.

Caring for and managing the Gold Coast City Collection The City Art Collection is a major asset for the city and the community and is valued at over 15 million dollars. New storage facilities were created within an existing shed on-site where artworks not dependant on Category A level of climate control were moved. This helped alleviate some dire storage issues by freeing up internal store areas to accommodate artworks requiring full climate control as well as temporary exhibition storage. Future plans to utilise air-conditioned space behind Cinema One were drafted and investigations are underway with regard to funding specialist storage requirements for this area. 2

Background

Background

The Arts Centre Gold Coast was first envisaged in 1968 when a group of like-minded Gold Coast area citizens actively promoted the need for a first-class theatre and gallery complex for entertainment and the arts on the Gold Coast. This group was later registered in 1971 as the Cultural Centre Association and known as the Community Arts Centre Association (C.A.C.A). By April 1969 this group secured the Gold Coast City Council’s support for the development of an arts centre on Evandale Park next to Gold Coast City Council Chambers. The Centre formally opened on 6th December 1986 and was called ‘The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre’ and was run directly by Council via a sub-committee. In 1993, a Board of Management was established and the Gold Coast City Council changed the name from The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre to the Gold Coast Arts Centre Proprietary Limited as a separate legal entity. During this time the entertainment program was expanded, the city’s first Arts Cinema was created, foyer space was increased, with a new bar area, the Arts Café was constructed and a new lobby retail shop opened. In March 2010, the Gold Coast Arts Centre was renamed, rebranded, refurbished and relaunched as The Arts Centre Gold Coast, as part of an ongoing change in strategic direction. The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) is a registered trading name of Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd. On 06 December 2011 The Arts Centre Gold Coast celebrates its 25th Birthday.

Board of Directors

Board of Directors

Kerry Watson Chairman of the Board of Directors Appointed to the Board in 2008

Patrick Corrigan AM Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 1996 Chairman Gold Coast City Gallery Sub-Committee

Born and educated in Queensland, Kerry Watson began his career in stockbroking and merchant banking before returning to the Gold Coast to establish the Quality Inns Group with the Graham family. Kerry was a key player in attracting the first Japanese and Asian tourists to Australia and the Gold Coast.

Patrick Corrigan began his career in the freight industry in the 60’s and by the mid 70’s he was head of several freight companies which participated in the phenomenal expansion of the freighting industry in Australia and overseas. Pat began his love affair with collecting art and art books in his 30’s and his library is recognised as one of the finest private library collections of its type in Australia. Pat says that the main thrill of collecting has always been the hunt and acquisition of rare items, rather than possession of them once acquired.

After the sale of the Quality Inns Group, Kerry commenced a consulting business through his company, Pacific Global Corporation with clients including Marriott International Australia and the Queensland Government through Events Queensland Gold Coast. Kerry is currently Chairman of Events Queensland Gold Coast (Gold Coast Marathon and Pan Pacific Masters Games) and Gold Coast Tropicarnival Ltd – Gold Coast Eisteddfod, as well as Executive Advisor – Japan for Tourism Australia and an Honorary Life Member of Gold Coast Tourism. He has previously held positions as Deputy Chairman of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation (now Tourism Queensland), Chairman of the Inbound Tourism Organisation of Australia (now Australian Tourism Export Council) and Director of the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau and Gold Coast TAFE. Richard Munro Bus. CPA, MAICD Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Chairman Finance, Philanthropy, Assets and Risk SubCommittee - Appointed to the Board in 2008 Richard has worked in Public Accounting Practice on the Gold Coast since 1994, including his position as partner at Munro Accountants Gold Coast. He currently is also a Board member for the Gold Coast TAFE Statutory Authority. His past roles include committee positions on various business and sporting organisations and he is a past President of CPA Australia, Gold Coast Branch. His extensive experience gained through working with many South East Queensland businesses and associations means that Richard brings to the role of Deputy Chair of the Board a high level of expertise and strengths in financial and strategic management. While Richard’s specific interests have generally revolved around business and sports, his family has participated in a number of past Summer Schools at The Arts Centre over the years, giving him a strong appreciation of the benefits the arts bring to the community.

Pat has been donating art to public galleries for many years and his involvement with the industry remains strong. In 2000 he was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to the arts and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Bond University. He is a life member of the State Library of Queensland, The Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Association of Visual Arts. Pat is married to Barbara and they have a daughter and three sons. In July 2010 Pat and Barbara were bestowed the title of inaugural Life Benefactor of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, in recognition of their meritorious services in enhancing the Gold Coast City’s Art Collection. Judith Ferber Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2007 Chair Marketing, Programming & Sponsorship Sub-Commitee Judith has been a Gold Coast resident since 1967 when she worked at the Gold Coast’s first radio station 4GG and then in the entertainment department for the Chevron Group of Hotels. In 1982, together with business partner, the late Paul Sharratt, Judith ran the first Gold Coast Festival, Tropicarnival. The pair co-ordinated many other events and also produced Logie award winning shows for QTQ Channel Nine during the 1970’s. Tropicarnival was a two-week celebration featuring over 200 events and ran every October for 20 years. Tropicarnival won a Queensland Tourism award for best Regional Event. The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was part of the Festival and continues to this day, becoming the largest Eisteddfod in the country. Judith has coordinated several major events for the Gold Coast community including Christmas Carols, New Year’s Eve Celebrations and the Gold Coast City Council’s Australia Day activities. In 2004, she won the major award in the Gold Coast Bulletin Honours for Services to the Community. Judith is General Manager of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and a Board member of Gold Coast City Council’s Events Advisory Committee. She has two daughters and three granddaughters and enjoys life with her partner, Bryan Durham.
