Chairman’s Report
The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) has grown over the past 26 years to become the pulsing, cultural heart of the city. The Annual Report 2012-13 shows a continuation of strong attendance and increased diversity of artistic programming, of which we are enormously proud.
addition to the 54 other appreciated benefactors who continue to play a vital role. Donations to the Art Gallery and our most recent external evaluation have taken the value of the City’s collection to almost $20 million, up from $16 million in 2012-13.
From its humble beginnings as the creation of a group of forward-thinking arts-minded Gold Coast residents, the then Gold Coast Arts Centre opened its doors in 1986 to much celebration: the region’s first ever dedicated arts precinct constructed with community and Council support. It swelled and grew, culminating in a massive re-construction and growth program and the re-launch of a new and improved complex in 1988, which we now know as The Arts Centre Gold Coast.
Part of our focus for future programming lies in leveraging from the opportunities presented by the biggest sporting and cultural event for this region in many years, the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The employment and economic benefits alone for the region are already being felt as visitors and residents see the large capital works projects underway including the light rail project and significant road upgrades.
We thank the Gold Coast City Council for their ongoing considerable support of TACGC and their aspiration for the future of culture and art for the City. Last year TACGC celebrated a milestone: marking 25 years of service to the community. And with it came a year-long celebratory program for artists and community members alike. Thousands attended free concerts, workshops, and celebrations. This year saw a new significant artistic milestone – the launch of the Gold Coast’s first-ever Independent Theatre Season. This is an extraordinary achievement. In the absence of a fully professional theatre company on the Gold Coast, TACGC has become the hub for creative and artistic activity and development. We are proud to add an Independent Season to our bow, providing new and emerging artists with the opportunity to create, develop and present new, independent works with the support of professional infrastructure. We also welcomed the new President of the Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Tim Cole who stepped into the role from previous President of 16 years Wendy Spencer. I thank Tim for his efforts this year. Tim has done an outstanding job following on from Wendy’s equally great effort. Reflecting our commitment to provide something for everyone, annual attendance was recorded at 493,209 across the 5,635 events held at the Centre this year. At a time when all sectors of the economy are experiencing a downturn and statistics show a decline across the board on spending on entertainment, it says much about the strength and diversity of our artistic programming and services, that the Centre has maintained steady attendance figures in this period. Our Benefactors continue to be our greatest supporters with financial contributions. Barry and Maureen Stevenson became Platinum Benefactors whilst Jock and Beverly McIlwain elevated their philanthropic status to Diamond. This is in
The Arts Centre Gold Coast is continuing to work with local, state, national and international partners to leverage the best for this exciting period in our City’s future, supported also by the continued efforts around the development of the new cultural precinct, which will see the unveiling of a new Gold Coast Cultural Precinct Design on 21 November 2013. This event will herald the start of a three week public exhibition and is the culmination of an International Design Competition that has seen 75 international design teams culled down to three with a final winning design being selected. Throughout this process The Arts Centre Gold Coast has been ably represented by our General Manager Destry Puia, who along with Gold Coast City Mayor Tom Tate, were part of the eight member design jury. I would like to thank them both for their leadership in guiding this project and would also like to acknowledge the earlier contribution of former Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast President Paul Fitzgerald, who along with myself, sat on the steering committee that preceded the design competition. These efforts are in addition to the countless community representatives who have maintained continued belief in this important project. Finally, I extend thanks to my fellow Board directors for their ongoing vision and professionalism. Thanks also to the entire Arts Centre Gold Coast staff ably led by Destry Puia and his executive team. As an organisation we are incredibly fortunate to have built such a talented group of dedicated professionals and equally committed volunteers, without whom we would not enjoy the continuing support of the community and the respect of the industry. It is with great pride that I commend the 2012/13 Annual Report of The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

General Manager’s Report
The 2012-13 Annual Report demonstrates the continuing importance and relevance of producing and presenting cultural and artistic products on the Gold Coast.
Australian actor Amanda Muggleton, began their nationwide tours at TACGC. This is testament to our increasing ‘place’ on the Arts map.
As the nation’s second largest local government area by population growth, the eyes of similar-growth regions are setting their benchmarks against the standards we set here, on the Gold Coast. Our growth over the last 26 years has mirrored the growth of the tourism industry in this region, and therefore our business models and local artistic product have always sought to incorporate the unique and particular formula we enjoy here – the best climate in the world, and the best place to live. As we continue to strive to produce the best possible product, we will continue to incorporate these unique characteristics.
Among the many new and exciting developments at the Centre are possibly our two most significant artistic achievements: the launch and presentation of the Centre’s inaugural Independent Theatre Season and the interactive virtual presentation developed in conjunction with the Australian Chamber Orchestra – both of which are detailed in this report.
The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) last year concluded a three year period of Regional Arts Funding which strategically and operationally, has helped to deliver the artistic frameworks and benchmarks we have set out to achieve, and helped to further a new period of strategic and artistic direction and leadership. To support this function, TACGC Executive undertook a review of its operations and last year enacted a restructure to better align the business of the arts with the operation of the Centre. I’m pleased to report that the realignment of the organisation’s structure with operations has been a smooth and effective transition, and I thank all involved in its rollout. Complementing the restructure was a rigorous business planning process which sought to not only solidify and grow our strengths, but also to set a course for our future with targeted and focused key performance indicators. The Arts industry is set against the backdrop of continuing difficult economic circumstances – which is an important factor to consider as we continue to strive to provide a level of accessibility to all sectors of the community. I am very pleased to report that despite the economic circumstances, TACGC remains a strong and vibrant presence on the Gold Coast with steady attendance figures and a growing artistic program. We will continue to work towards building a robust and sustainable arts industry. Operationally, our partnership with some of Queensland’s leading companies continued with community programs such as the Opera for the Over 50s run in partnership with Opera Queensland and the Junior and Youth Theatre Residencies in conjunction with Queensland Theatre Company as well as Small Dances/Big Stories with Dancenorth. The creative partnerships fostered through the annual Surfers Paradise and Bleach Festivals were again a highlight of our calendar, showing the community that contemporary and relevant artistic and theatrical works need not only be presented within the walls of a traditional centre. Next year will see a continued commitment to extending the reach of the Arts beyond the Centre walls. The subscription season, now in its third year, brought many of Australia’s leading companies to the Theatre. Several shows, including the one-woman comedy Book Club, starring popular
The Paradise Showroom hosted a variety of fantastic artists and performers from The Andrews Sisters Tribute show through to the ever-popular senior’s Christmas concert and the ongoing A Morning With... presentations. The Basement continued to host comedy, jazz and cabaret performers, as well as this year being the venue for The Greenroom Project, which brought nationally acclaimed musical theatre stars to the Gold Coast for a mentoring session, interviews and cabaret style performances with aspiring musical theatre performers. In total, 115,187 people attended 377 arts performances. The Centre’s cinema program attracted 142,960 members of the public and 42,924 patrons visited the Art Gallery across the 22 exhibitions and events held. Presenting exhibitions of national and cultural significance is a priority at TACGC. This year, Shakin’ The Contemporary Kinetic Aesthetic saw the Gallery host an extraordinary collection of pieces from generations of contemporary Australian artists. As well, the Gallery exhibited pieces from some of the best international ceramic practitioners through the 28th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award, won, for the first time by local artist Liesa Russel. This year the Gallery received a Museums Australia Multimedia and Publication Design Award for the digital catalogue for the Shakin’ The Contemporary Kinetic Aesthetic Exhibition. As well, the 2012 Gold Coast Art Prize and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2013 attracted nationwide entries. The City’s art collection is now valued at $20 million – however the cultural value of this asset alone puts the Gold Coast at the forefront of Art, particularly in the regions of Australia. In closing, I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the staff of The Arts Centre Gold Coast for their continued passion, enthusiasm and professionalism. Likewise, the Board of Directors, led by Chair, Kerry Watson, provides us with strong, informed and steady leadership, which makes coming to work every day a pleasure and a privilege. Gold Coast Cultural Precinct Design Competition
Throughout the year work on the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct has progressed at great speed. In March 2013 Gold Coast City Council launched a worldwide search for three design consortia to complete a master plan of this new city icon. An eight member panel Design Jury was formed to judge the submissions and included Mayor Tom Tate, The Arts Centre Gold Coast General Manager Destry Puia, Queensland Performing Arts Centre CEO John Kotzas and Griffith University’s Head of Architecture Professor Gordon Holden as Design Jury Chairman. From a field of 75 entries three teams where shortlisted. • ARM Architecture • CRAB_VOGT_DBI • Nikken Sekkei
Each shortlisted team was awarded $250,000 to participate in an intensive 12-week Stage Two design period. In October 2013 this design period ended and the Design Jury assembled for the final time to select a winner from the three final submissions. On 21 November 2013 Mayor Tom Tate will publicly announce the winner of the design competition and officially launch The Reveal exhibition. This three week exhibition will be held at Gold Coast City Gallery and will feature all three shortlisted designs and will include site models, computer animation and design prints.

Supporting Local Performing Arts Development
The 2012/2013 financial year saw the culmination of the joint Commonwealth / State funded Regional Stages program which was a three-year scheme designed to provide local theatre practitioners with much-needed infrastructure and support to build creative projects for the community. The program recognised the need to continue to support local independent theatre making and, in the absence of a professional Gold Coast-based performing arts company, provided vital mentorship and development for the sector. While funding for the program concluded in 2012, TACGC has continued its commitment to delivering and growing quality local product, and pursuing many of the valuable opportunities produced via Regional Stages. An example of this was the development and presentation of the Centre’s inaugural Independent Theatre Season.
Independent Theatre Season The inaugural Independent Theatre Season was released with great anticipation in 2013. The Independent Theatre Season demonstrated a diverse and eclectic mix of contemporary, original and challenging drama and black comedy works. The release of the Independent Theatre Season was the result of the culmination of developmental programs supported by the Centre over the past three years. Extensive programs and mentorships gave local arts practitioners the much needed support to not only nurture skill - but to have creative voice in the region. The Arts Centre Gold Coast continues to build creative, modern day theatre practise to interested locals. In a role of creative incubator and producer, the Centre has made significant impact on a local and national level.

Supporting Local Arts Development
Artist in Residence
The 2012 Artist in Residence was Soapbox Theatre Productions, a group of young people with significant talent, high energy, a record of producing good works and expanding network of supporters on the Gold Coast. Soapbox received professional development, mentoring and business planning support through financial and in-kind support. Soapbox presented two Centre co-produced pieces, Sophie Is… and Chasing the Whale, which was the company’s flagship presentation. Chasing the Whale Written by Matt Ryan, the Brisbane-based author of Boy Girl Wall and Kelly, Chasing the Whale follows Jerry, a young man competing for a big promotion, as head of a major advertising company. The piece chronicles the strange and hilarious things that happen as he vies for the top job and struggles to keep his perfect world together. The piece attracted close to 400 patrons and provided employment for five people. Fill this Space Fill this Space was an initiative designed to present contemporary musical theatre works and employment opportunities for local artists in this genre. The newly-formed local Independent group, Golden Apple Theatrical Productions presented The Last Five Years as its debut piece in December 2012. Local director Cilla Scott was the helm and received professional development through the engagement of Queensland Theatre Company’s resident designer, Simone Romaniuk, for set drawing. The Chinese Restaurant Show Rice and Easy – The Other Production Company Local composer Simon Chan, through his company The Other Production Company needed a vehicle for his work to be heard. Utilising some fine local musical theatre artists, Rice and Easy was a tongue in cheek showcase of Simon’s work. Fill the Space provided guidance in the areas of production and production management. Simon has been recognised through The Arts Centre Gold Coast’s incubator initiatives as a local producer, and composer of musical works. With the popularity of the musical theatre genre on the Gold Coast, we believe that Simon’s company will continue to play an important role in developing and producing original works.

As part of the Centre’s commitment to growing a vibrant, sustainable and culturally relevant arts scene on the Gold Coast, 2012-13 has seen a greater emphasis placed on public programming and audience outreach. Having already earned significant runs on the board in terms of artist development, the notion that artists must create works relevant to their community and consider emerging and innovating material (and media) underscores our commitment to both the Independent Theatre Season and our flagship collaboration. Australian Chamber Orchestra Installation In a world premiere, The Arts Centre Gold Coast in conjunction with the Australian Chamber Orchestra hosted ACO VIRTUAL – an interactive audio-visual installation of music played by the ACO in the Centre’s Gallery space. But this was an installation with a difference. Rather than in-person musicians, largerthan-life video imagery of 13 ACO musicians was projected around the walls of the Gallery. This saw visitors to the exhibition physically placed in the centre of the performance and surrounded by musicians and sound. Opportunities to interact with, enjoy, and learn about the pieces were many and varied. Through a free application able to be downloaded to any iPhone or Android device, patrons were able to learn about individual musicians and pieces. An iPad in the centre of the Gallery enabled patrons to ‘virtually conduct’ the orchestra by giving full control over what was being played – either by turning up or down individual instruments, removing and including orchestra parts, and even playing along on in realtime on their own instrument, using scores superimposed on the video or scores loaded online. This installation was a world-first, crossing the disciplines of the performing and visual arts and combining them with new and emerging technology. And it was an enormously successful collaboration with more than 3000 patrons through the doors during the three week exhibition. More than 400 of these were school students, some travelling from as far as Ipswich to visit.

Artist development
Programs in the artist development arm of the Centre’s work continue to build skills development for Gold Coast based people interested in directing, teaching or creating works. Behind Every Great Singer This program provided professional development for singers, vocal teachers and vocal coaches with expertise drawn from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Presentations and master classes were conducted by Paul Sabey who was on sabbatical from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London with fellow presenters, Dr Irene Bartlett, Ron Morris and Nick Hollamby. The workshop encouraged high standards in the art of singing, voice education and vocal health. In 2013 this program will present the workshop Not Just a Pretty Voice designed to extend the work done in previous years. Script Development Gold Coast writer Stewart McMillan was selected to work with PLAYLAB in an intensive script development program, drawing expertise from Brisbane-based dramaturge Ian Lawson with access to local actors for the development and creative process. The program culminated with a performed reading of the script in late 2012. The piece Unnatural Selection has become part of the Centre’s augural Independent Theatre Season. Youth Theatre Project The Youth Theatre Project is designed to mentor young Gold Coast actors looking to develop their skills and participate in performance opportunities in text-based works. The Centre developed a program where 16-24 young actors were given access to a professional director in the creation and presentation of a quality drama production. Engaging a professional director for the presentations has been a crucial element in the project’s success.

Artist development
This year, Andrea Moor of the Queensland Theatre Company took on the role of director, guiding the nine young actors in Eyes to the Floor through a demanding rehearsal process and delivering an outstanding performance to more than 300 people. Eyes to the Floor is based on true events at the Hay Institute for girls in NSW in the 1960s and 70s about survival in a setting determined to break the human spirit. It was an engaging original work, providing excellent craft extension – not only for cast - but equally to audiences, who relished the intensity of the subject matter. Now in its third year, The Youth Theatre Project will become a permanent fixture in our youth program.

Developing and presenting high-quality exhibitions to diverse audiences This year witnessed another diverse collection with 22 exhibitions presented onsite. These ranged from screeching, bashing and physically engaging contemporary kinetic sculptures, to Sue Ford’s contemplative body of work spanning decades, right through to the sophisticated sounds of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s (ACO) virtual installation. The ACO piece was a commissioned world virtual premiere incorporating latest technology for an interactive ACO experience. In addition, the exhibitions, Kuru Alala: Eyes Open and Ian Smith: On and Off the Road, completed extensive national tours. Initiating and presenting exhibitions of national importance Shakin’ The Contemporary Kinetic Aesthetic saw the Gallery filled with weird and wonderful contraptions from generations of contemporary Australian artists. The exhibition explored aesthetic, scientific and organic connections with the human experience ranging from John Turier’s massive hand powered drawing machine to Arthur Wick’s motorised and programmable boatmen. This year the Gallery received a Museums Australia Multimedia and Publication Design Award for the digital catalogue for this exhibition. Held every second year the 28th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award saw some of the best ceramic practitioners from around the world present work to local audiences. For the first time in the Award’s history, First Prize went to Gold Coast artist Liesa Russell for her beautifully constructed dress 11 Shades of Blue. The 2012 Gold Coast Art Prize and The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2013 attracted nationwide entries, allowing the Gallery to present current surveys of contemporary artistic practice. Both exhibitions provided significant acquisitions for the collection.

Presenting significant travelling exhibitions Time Machine: Sue Ford on tour from Monash Gallery of Art presented the work of one of Australia’s most important photographers and filmmakers, Sue Ford (1943–2009). Ford studied photography at RMIT and in 1974 was the first Australian photographer to be given a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Prior to her death in 2009, Ford was working with Monash Gallery of Art on an exhibition of her work which would feature her final major project: Self-portrait with Camera (1960–2006). This travelling exhibition was the first opportunity for audiences to see this important series of 47 photographs, and presented a compelling self-portrait of an artist. It underscored the central role the camera played in Ford’s life. Self-portrait with Camera was shown alongside a survey of Ford’s black-and-white photographs from the 1960s and 70s and examples of her most iconic work, Time series (1960s–1970s). This year, the Gallery was fortunate to be able to host one of the richest art prize exhibitions in the country – The Basil Sellers Art Prize 3: 15 artists tackle sport. Previously only ever exhibited at the Ian Potter Museum of Art in Melbourne, City of Gold Coast Gallery was the first and only other Australian venue to present this prestigious exhibition. This new partnership reflects the ambition of Basil Sellers and the Ian Potter Foundation to have artworks reflecting on sport and sporting culture to be seen by wider Australian audiences. The Gold Coast presentation is both appropriate and timely for our young and rapidly growing city, famed for its outdoor and sporting lifestyle, and now as host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, eager for sporting and artistic cultures to be appreciated in new ways. At the other end of the spectrum, and in a world premiere, the Gallery hosted ACO VIRTUAL, an interactive, cuttingedge audio-visual installation that saw 13 musicians of the Australian Chamber Orchestra projected around the walls of the Gallery. Audiences were immersed in the centre of the orchestral performance and interacted in many ways, virtually ‘conducting’ the musicians, playing along with the orchestra on their own instrument, or enjoying a lunch-time concert. A free app downloadable to any iPhone or Android device allowed audiences to learn more about the musicians and the pieces played. To coincide with the exhibition John Gollings: Learning from Surfers Paradise - A Rephotography Project 1973-2013, the Gallery further secured the exhibition Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venuri and Denise Scott Brown – a touring exhibition from Museum im Bellpark,

Switzerland. Through the work of architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown whose treatise ‘Learning from Las Vegas’ (1972) we have radically altered our understanding of the importance of the city of Las Vegas. Their study went on to become one of the most influential and controversial books on 20th Century architecture, and their reading of the strip city form continues to inspire and challenge today. This exhibition is extracted from the large archive of images and film compiled during a research trip to Las Vegas in 1968 with students from Yale University.

Mentoring local artists and displaying their work
Engaging the Community
Through the predominant use of the Foyer Gallery and Darkroom, the Gold Coast City Gallery offers a regular program of solo exhibitions by local artists. Gold Coast artists have also featured in group exhibitions in the main gallery spaces. These exhibitions present significant professional development and exposure opportunities for artists, with catalogues produced and works of art sold. Hosting public events also enables artists to have direct engagement with the community and media. In addition, 142 local artists were represented in group or prize exhibitions including the 28th Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Award, The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, The Gold Coast Art Prize, Energies and the Queensland College of Art Graduate exhibition.
In concert with the exhibitions and collection activities, the Gallery presents a range of public programs designed to encourage audiences to engage with the visual arts. Throughout the year a number of Family Activity Days were conducted on weekends, where families were invited to participate in activities connected to particular exhibitions. These included The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award (PhotoFun at the Gallery) in conjunction with QAGoMA’s APT7 exhibition (APT7 Kids on Tour). Workshops in conjunction with Erica Gray: Pipe Dreams (Soft Sculpture), Energies (Student Immersion Day) and Gold Coast Art Prize (Drawing Masterclass with Wendy Loefler) were also offered.
Presenting works from the collection in new ways
In addition to this, a range of talks and lectures from artists, curators, architects and designers were delivered throughout the year. The Gallery’s inaugural AFTER DARK program was launched in conjunction with the ACO Virtual exhibition and was very well attended. Galleries remained open until late and audiences were able to engage with the exhibition through talks and musical entertainment.
The exhibitions Sexualising the City and 1000 Days: Robert Brownhall and the Gold Coast utilised works from the collection to illustrate specific curatorial theses and demonstrate the relevance of collection works within a broader context. Works drawn from the collection for Sexualising the City offered a range of approaches to the themes of the exhibition, and included work by Jeff Carter, Jack Kilgour, Peter Powditch, Betty Quelhurst, Luke Roberts, Ruth Maddison and Scott Redford. The panoramic view of Surfers Paradise was a key work in the survey of Robert Brownhall’s career and his relationship with the city. To coincide with ACO Virtual, the exhibition Sight and Sound drew works from the collection which referenced music on various levels - from direct depictions of instruments or players, to artists citing specific music and musicians influencing their work - the exhibition presented a rich and diverse response to the creative process. Caring for and managing the Gold Coast City Collection The Gold Coast City Art Collection is a major asset for the city and the community and has recently undergone an external assessment, with the insurance value now close to 20 million dollars. New storage facilities onsite have been fully utilised. Further ongoing management of the collection includes an active loans program to City of Gold Coast buildings particularly new library spaces at Coomera and Helensvale.

Background and Company Profile
The Arts Centre Gold Coast was first envisaged in 1968 when a group of like-minded Gold Coast citizens actively promoted the need for first-class theatre and gallery complex for entertainment and the arts on the Gold Coast. In 1971 this group was registered as the Cultural Centre Association and known as the Community Arts Centre Association (C.A.C.A) By April 1969 the group secured Council support for the development of an Arts Centre on Evandale Park next to Gold Coast City Council Chambers. The Centre opened in 1986 and was named the Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre. The Centre was managed by Council via a SubCommittee. In 1993 a Board of Management was established and Council changed the Centre’s name to the Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd as a separate legal entity. The Centre’s entertainment program was expanded; its first Arts Cinema created; the foyer space increased; a new bar area and Arts Cafe were constructed, as well as a new lobby retail shop. In March of 2010, Gold Coast Arts Centre was renamed, rebranded, refurbished and re-launched as The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) as part of an ongoing change in strategic direction. The Arts Centre Gold Coast is the registered trading name of the Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd. On 6 December 2011, The Arts Centre Gold Coast celebrated its 25th birthday. The Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd is the statutory body that operates TACGC with City of Gold Coast as sole shareholder. The Board of Directors comprises eight members appointed by Council. The Arts Centre Gold Coast is the region’s premier cultural facility bringing visual and performing arts to residents of South East Queensland. The Centre houses the Arts Theatre with 1139 seats, Art Gallery, Paradise Showroom, two Cinemas, the Arts Café as well as several function rooms, and two smaller performance spaces - The Basement and The Space. The Gallery houses the city collection contemporary and historic artworks. The Board of The Arts Centre Gold Coast is the custodian of the art collection, valued at approximately $20 million and has management responsibility for activity at the Centre valued at approximately $11 million. The Centre employs 45 permanent full time staff, 10 permanent part time staff and 75 casual and / or seasonal employees.

Kerry Watson Chairman of the Board of Directors Appointed to the Board in 2008 Born and educated in Queensland, Kerry Watson began his career in stockbroking and merchant banking before returning to the Gold Coast to establish the Quality Inns Group with the Graham family. Kerry was involved in the commencement of Japanese and Asian tourists to Australia. After the sale of the Quality Inns Group, Kerry commenced a consulting business through his company, Pacific Global Corporation with clients including Marriott International Australia and the Queensland Government. Kerry is currently Chairman of Events Management Queensland (Gold Coast Marathon and Pan Pacific Masters Games) and Gold Coast Tropicarnival Ltd – Gold Coast Eisteddfod, an Honorary Life Member of Gold Coast Tourism and Gold Coast City Legacy Board member for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He has previously held positions as Deputy Chairman of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation (now Tourism Events Queensland), Chairman of the Inbound Tourism Organisation of Australia (now Australian Tourism Export Council) and Director of the Gold Coast Tourism and Gold Coast Institute of TAFE. He is a recipient of the honour of the Keys to the City of the Gold Coast and Citizen of the Year.

Patrick Corrigan AM Board Director Appointed to the Board in 1996 Chair Gold Coast City Gallery Sub-Committee Patrick Corrigan began his career in the freight industry in the 60’s and by the mid 70’s he was head of several freight companies which participated in the phenomenal expansion of the freighting industry in Australia and overseas. Pat began his love affair with collecting art and art books in his 30’s and his library is recognised as one of the finest private library collections of its type in Australia. Pat says that the main thrill of collecting has always been the hunt and acquisition of rare items, rather than possession of them once acquired. Pat has been donating art to public galleries for many years and his involvement with the industry remains strong. In 2000 he was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to the arts and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Bond University. He is a life member of the State Library of Queensland, The Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Association of Visual Arts. Pat is married to Barbara and they have a daughter and three sons. In July 2010 Pat and Barbara were bestowed the title of inaugural Life Benefactor of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, in recognition of their meritorious services in enhancing the Gold Coast City’s Art Collection.
Richard Munro Bus. CPA, MAICD Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Chairman Finance and Audit Sub-Committee Appointed to the Board in 2008 Richard has been in Public Accounting Practice on the Gold Coast since 1994. He currently is a Director of financial services business – Quill Group. Past roles include committee positions on various business and sporting organisations including past President of CPA Australia, Gold Coast Branch and as a Director of the Board for the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE. He has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Diploma Course covering Corporate Governance. His extensive experience gained in working with many South East Queensland businesses and associations means that Richard brings a high-level of expertise and strengths in
Judith Ferber Board Director Appointed to the Board in 2007 Chair Marketing & Programming Sub-Committee Judith has been a Gold Coast resident since 1967 when she worked at the Gold Coast’s first radio station 4GG and then in the entertainment department for the Chevron Group of Hotels. In 1982, together with business partner, the late Paul Sharratt, Judith ran the first Gold Coast Festival, Tropicarnival. The pair co-ordinated many other events and also produced Logie Award, winning shows for QTQ Channel Nine during the 1970s.

Tropicarnival was a two-week celebration featuring over 200 events and ran every October for 20 years. Tropicarnival won a Queensland Tourism award for best Regional Event. The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was part of the Festival and continues to this day, becoming the largest Eisteddfod in the country. Judith has coordinated several major events for the Gold Coast community including Christmas Carols, New Year’s Eve Celebrations and the Gold Coast City Council’s Australia Day activities. In 2004, she won the major award in the Gold Coast Bulletin Honours for Services to the Community. In 2011, Judith was awarded the “Key to the City” for service to the Arts and the Gold Coast Eisteddfod by the then Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke. Judith is General Manager of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and a Board member of Gold Coast City Council’s Events Advisory Committee. She has two daughters and three grandchildren who also live on the Gold Coast and enjoys a busy life with partner Bryan Durham.
Cr Tracey Gilmore BVSc(Hons), MBA, Grad. Dip. Ed. Board Director Appointed to the Board in 2013 As the former Director for the Gold Coast Office of the Department of State Development and Innovation for more than 19 years, Cr Gilmore was influential in many of the Gold Coast’s major economic development projects. She has been a member of numerous boards and committees. Her priorities for the City over the next four years are job creation by stimulating the traditional tourism and construction industries, as well as diversifying the region’s industry base with a focus on knowledge based industries. As a Division 5 resident Cr Gilmore is committed to working hard for her constituents, reducing Council costs to ratepayers, supporting community safety initiatives and building the community capacity within the Division. Two of her priorities are the establishment of a Community Hub in Pacific Pines and the opening to the public of Country Paradise Parklands. Cr Gilmore is Deputy Chair of the City of Gold Coast’s Economic and Development Committee, a member of the Community & Cultural Development Committee and the Governance and Finance Committee.
Alan Hayes B.Des.St, B.Arch. (Hons) Board Director Appointed to the Board in 2009 After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1979, Alan practised architecture on the Gold Coast for 18 months, specialising in fast-track documentation, before taking up the A.E. Brookes Travelling Scholarship which was awarded on graduation. This enabled a 12-month stay in Europe during which he worked with The Halpern Partnership in London. On his return to the Gold Coast he joined Silver Goldberg Hamilton and gained further fast-track experience working on the Paradise Centre. At the time, this was the largest urban development project in Australia and required special enabling legislation passed by the State Government. By completion of this project Alan had become an Associate and then Director of the company, which duly then changed the company name to Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects. The firm celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008 and continues to shape our built environment. Alan strongly believes that good design shapes our attitudes, both individually and collectively, and that The Arts Centre has a pivotal role in increasing design awareness on the Gold Coast.
Christine Lohman MBA FPRIA FAICD Board Director Appointed to the Board in 2010 Chair Governance Sub-Committee Christine Lohman currently serves as a director on the boards of Workcover Queensland, Sisters of the Good Samaritan Foundation, and member of St Vincents Australia Health Limited Queensland Advisory Committee. Past directorships include St Vincent’s and Holy Spirit Health Limited, Board of Governance for St Pauls, The Brisbane College of Theology, The 1994 World Masters Games, The Office of Economic Development for the City of Brisbane, Tourism Brisbane and several not for profit organisations. Until recently she provided professional counsel to the Board of Gladstone Ports Corporation and was a member of the Queensland Government Clean and Healthy Air for Gladstone Industry Reference Group.

She holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Queensland, has completed the AICD Directors Course and has achieved the highest level of recognition her industry can bestow as a Fellow of the Public Relations Industry of Australia. Christine is also credited as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
as an acting coach in the film and television industry and at a corporate level, and as a mentor teacher for new drama and communication teachers. Naomi is passionate about the Gold Coast and embraces all the city has to offer, in particular the cultural and outdoor facets. She has been a long-term member of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod movement and is a motivating force behind youth in arts on the Gold Coast.
Christine has an extensive background in corporate communication and strategic planning in both the private and public sectors and brings to the Board a high level of communication and corporate governance expertise. She owned and operated one of Queensland’s leading public relations companies which formed part of a national group advising major ASX listed companies and government.
Mayor Tom Tate Board Director – August 2012 to January 2013
Her connection with the Gold Coast goes back to the early 80’s when her client Jennings Limited secured a licence to operate a casino. From inception she worked on the project managing government relations and marketing for what was then Australia’s largest public float (IPO). Her company continued to provide specialist investor relations assistance to the Board of Jupiters Limited until its takeover by Tabcorp Holdings Limited. She was an integral part of a team that won for Jupiters a contract to develop and manage the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. Her company consulted to numerous major construction projects on the Gold Coast and managed the investor relations campaign for the public float of Sea World Limited.
Naomi Middlebrook ATCL LTCL CSCA Board Director Appointed to the Board in 2008 Over the past 30 years Naomi has worked in all aspects of performance and communications. Her love of theatre started from an early age and she began working in community theatre on the Gold Coast in the mid-1970s. In 1980 she relocated to Sydney where she studied acting. After a number of years as an aspiring actor Naomi completed teaching qualifications and returned to the Gold Coast where she established one of the first private drama studios. Naomi has taught extensively in the school system and currently works as a drama and communication specialist at All Saints Anglican School on the Gold Coast, a position she has held for almost two decades. In addition to this she regularly consults
Tom Tate was elected Mayor of the Gold Coast, Australia’s 6th largest city, in April 2012. Tom is a civil engineer by trade, having graduated from the University of NSW in the early 1980s. He started his career in the construction industry and later moved into the tourism and hospitality industry. Tom has served as CEO of the family owned business which includes the Islander Resort Hotel and Sanctuary Resort, Malaysia for almost 20 years. He has also been an active member of the Gold Coast business community for many years serving as a Director for a variety of business associations and organisations, including Gold Coast Rugby, Gold Coast Turf Club, Director & Regional Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland and awarded Life Member of the Surfers Paradise-Broadbeach Chamber of Commerce. Tom has been married to his wife, Ruth for 33 years and together they have four children. The multi-cultural Mayor was born in Asia and is fluent in three languages. As Mayor, Tom is working to return that ‘have a go’ spirit back to the Gold Coast. He has committed to reducing the cost of living pressure facing residents, reform council, cut waste and broaden the Gold Coast’s economic base beyond its cornerstones of tourism and construction.

Executive Team
Destry Puia, General Manager Destry has extensive experience within the arts and government sector, having worked for a variety of organisations including independent theatre companies, large metropolitan arts organisations and regional and metropolitan councils. Prior to taking up his current appointment, Destry was the General Manager for The Events Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Destry guided this organisation through a significant artistic and strategic redevelopment which resulted in an increase in attendance, participation and financial returns. Prior to this, Destry was Director of Arts and Cultural Services for Kingston City Council in Melbourne and was a previous committee member of the Arts Industry Council of Victoria. Destry is currently President of the Northern Australian Regional Performing Arts Centres Association (NARPACA), the key peak body responsible for collaborating with the Queensland Government on venue management challenges, arts industry matters and regional touring strategies. Other current and previous industry appointments include Gold Coast Cultural Precinct International Design Competition Jury Member, Executive Committee Member for the Australian Performing Arts Centres Association, Committee Member for the Performing Arts Touring Alliance, Committee Member for the Arts Industry Council of Victoria, Regional Touring Panel Member for the Helpmann Awards, Panel Member for Ausdance Queensland, National Touring Review Panel member for the Australia Council and Arts Assessment Panel Member for Arts Queensland. Destry has an Arts Degree in Social Science and in 2006 was a regional winner of the Young Manager of the Year by the Australian Institute of Management. Destry is married to Poppy and they have three beautiful daughters Taylor, Manaia and Kyra.
Sue-Anne Chapman, Communications & Visitor Services Manager Before leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra through a major rebrand in 2009, Sue-Anne Chapman was Operations Manager for the Gold Coast Titans and the Marketing and Promotions Manager for AFL Gold Coast. Sue-Anne has worked as a PR and Marketing Officer for State Government departments and has significant experience in rolling out large scale marketing campaigns, developing subscription programs, increasing audience attendances and implementing efficient marketing processes. Sue-Anne moved to the Gold Coast at the commencement of the Marketing and Partnerships Manager role in January 2010 and thoroughly enjoys the Coast lifestyle. As part of the Centre’s restructure in April 2013, Sue-Anne’s portfolio now includes Marketing, Performing Arts, Customer Services and the Arts Cinema. Sue-Anne spends her leisure time renovating and reading and planning travel, filled with adventure. Brad Rush, Performing Arts Manager With formal qualifications in music from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brad has forged a career in the performing arts industry as an arts manager, teacher, director, musical director, producer and adjudicator. He has trained hundreds of young musicians, run his own music school and combined that with a diverse performance slate. In 2005, Brad was Business Development Manager for a National Franchise Company – specialists in Music Education, and then moved to independent Business Coaching with specialist focus to arts companies and organisations. Brad has held the position of Tour Coordinator in the Regional Touring Office at Queensland Arts Council. Brad worked as part of a small team to deliver and implement Queensland’s new touring strategy through the newly created arTour business unit. Through this time Brad was the Queensland Blue Heeler representative where he promoted and coordinated Queensland touring products for the National circuit. In 2010, Brad took the position of Creative Producer for The Arts Centre Gold Coast, and was responsible for delivering multiple initiatives to develop local independent artists and practitioners. Mid-2012 he moved into the role of the Programming Manager for the centre – now titled Performing Arts Manager. In 2013 he was recognised from Arts Queensland as a Culture Champion as represented through his professional and volunteer work and contribution to the arts in South-East Queensland.

Jason Solman, Facilities & Commercial Services Manager
Lynda White, Corporate Services Manager
Jason is a dedicated hospitality professional with tertiary qualifications in Hospitality Management and Events Management. He has over 22 years of industry experience working in a wide variety of organisations, including time as a Club Manager, Gaming Manager and Hotel Manager and over 13 years’ experience as a senior manager with TACGC.
Lynda is a Member of the Chartered Secretaries (Australia) and holds professional qualifications in Corporate Governance as well as having a Higher National Certificate in Public Administration, Diploma in Management and Ordinary National Certificate in Business Studies. Her experience includes more than 32 years in finance, human resources, contract management, payroll, administration, company secretarial and customer services experience.
A self-starter, Jason is pro-active and organised in all tasks. He is an energetic team player with strong business acumen, excellent financial aptitude and developed communication skills. His role focuses on the operation incorporating food, beverage, functions, shows and entertainment for The Art Centre’s main theatre, building services, WH&S and commercial sales of all areas. Jason was also responsible for initiating the industryrecognised 3 Chefs Do Lunch annual event and was a member of the organising committee for Taste of Gold Coast - Food & Wine Festival for over 8 years for the Gold Coast City Council. Jason has held positions on various Boards within the restaurant and business industries throughout the Gold Coast. John Walsh, Gallery Manager John has worked in the public gallery sector since the 1980s with his first appointment being at the National Gallery of Australia in the Australian Art Department. In 1989 he became Assistant Director of Wollongong City Gallery, a position he held for seven years. Since 1996 he has been Gallery Manager of Gold Coast City Gallery and is currently President of the Board of the Regional Galleries Association of Queensland. Over the years John has curated and coordinated numerous exhibitions from a variety of sources. He has worked with artists engaged in a diverse range of media and in all stages of their careers and produced numerous publications including catalogues for many of the exhibitions he has been involved with.
Lynda joined The Art Centre from the Commonwealth funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) based at Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus where she was employed as General Manager, Corporate Services and prior to this role, as Business Manager. The Centre was closed on 30 September 2010 in accordance with the Commonwealth Agreement after 13 years of operation and 2 successful terms of funding. Prior to immigrating to Australia in 2001, from the UK, Lynda worked in Local Government for over 23 years, holding positions at management level for over 15 years and was Departmental representative on various Human Resource and Development working committees.
