Artists have used the still life for centuries, not only to practice rendering volumes and imitating textures, but also to explore profound issues of humanity. From the transience of life captured in the symbolic vanitas of the Baroque period to the Modernist rebellion against social norms, the still life captivates our imaginations. How will you tell your story: through expressive interpretation, visual puns, or close observation? With acrylics, oil paint, or collage? It all depends on your personality and preferred mode of expression.

Need a review of basic drawing techniques so you can create better paintings? Been doing watercolors, but feel like you need some skills you never learned? This is the course for you. Learn how to observe and draw specifically for watercolor painting. Drawing what you see rather than what you know, understanding basic perspective and the relationship between objects, simplification, composition, editing, and simple contour drawing will help you hone your drawing skills so you can build on them to create watercolor paintings from observation. Each class introduces a different building block of watercolor. Working with a very specific palette (8 colors selected by the instructor) we will explore mixing, creating values, laying down washes, ratios of water and pigment, and positive and negative shapes. Emphasis will be on learning and practicing skills rather than creating finished paintings. Marilyn Rose 19U WAT092: Wednesdays, Jun 19-Jul 24, 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM 6 sessions $200 ($205 after Jun 6) Material fee $5 Material list: tasoc.org Model 2 sessions All levels Discover a fresh, loose approach to watercolor.
