elcome to Bass Performance Hall and our 2021-2022 Performing Arts Fort Worth season. On behalf of the Performing Arts Fort Worth staff and Board of Directors, I thank you for joining us. We are so excited to welcome the reimagined production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA!, winner of the 2019 Tony Award® for Best Musical Revival, to the Bass Hall stage. Directed by Daniel Fish, this is OKLAHOMA! as you’ve never seen or heard it before—reimagined for the 21st century, and the Tony Award® winner for Best Revival of a Musical. Funny and sexy, provocative and probing, this acclaimed production tells a story of a community banding together against an outsider, and the frontier life that shaped America. While this production of OKLAHOMA! is anything but traditional, we hope this daring interpretation invites you to explore, unpack and investigate the many mature themes in the show that have been there all along. Lastly, we hope that you continue the dialogue beyond the show itself. Visit www.basshall.com/oklahoma for more information and resources on this production. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! is part of our 2021-2022 Broadway at the Bass season. This landmark Broadway season also includes Jesus Christ Superstar, celebrating its 50th anniversary in a new mesmerizing production of the iconic musical. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring. The season concludes with Mean Girls, the record-breaking new musical comedy based on the hit film from Tina Fey. We look forward to celebrating 25 years of Bass Performance Hall in the 2022-2023 Broadway at the Bass Season presented by PNC Bank. The season kicks off in November with the Lincoln Center Theater Production of Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady, the classic musical sure to have you saying, “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Then in 2023, Pride Rock returns to Bass Hall as Disney’s The Lion King celebrates 20 years on tour; just in time for Valentine’s Day comes the new musical based on one of Hollywood’s most romantic love stories, Pretty Woman: The Musical; one of the most beloved musicals of all time, Annie, returns in a new production in the spring; Broadway’s funniest new musical will have you feeling “Unstoppable” when Tootsie takes the stage; and in June, the 2022-2023 season concludes with Hadestown, winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Returning to the Hall as a season add-on is Elf The Musical to ring in the holiday season. New season tickets can be purchased beginning July 12 online and by phone. Joining the waitlist online at www.basshall.com/waitlist is the quickest and easiest way to secure season tickets. Please sign up for our e-Club at www.basshall.com or follow us on social media to get the latest updates and to be the first to know when tickets to individual shows become available at a later date. Finally, thank you to all of our sponsors and donors for their generous contributions and continued support.

A STATEMENT FROM DIRECTOR DANIEL FISH The creative team recognizes the special place that Oklahoma! holds in the world of musical theater and in the hearts of many Americans. To some, the music is in their DNA and the story is familiar like a distant cousin. To others it is new. The richness of this tale has an endless capacity to present itself anew for every generation since its 1944 premiere. The interplay in Oklahoma! between confronting an American past and imagining an American future resonates deeply in moments of great change. Our production strives to meet every audience with equal invitation to experience this classic American Musical anew. It changes every night, because our audience changes every night. America is wildly diverse, and we seek to represent a small yet crucial part of that diversity, even as it has widened the division between our fellow citizens. Welcome.

RICHARD RODGERS AND OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music, Book and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American Musical Theatre. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes in Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as the musical play. Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer and Olivier Awards. LYNN RIGGS (Original Book). (1899– 1954), born in Claremore, Oklahoma, was the author of Green Grow the Lilacs, originally produced by the Theatre Guild in 1931. Riggs, whose father was once a cowboy and
whose mother was part Cherokee, often set his work in the Southwest, vividly depicting life in the Indian territory. He worked on several Hollywood films (The Plainsmen, The Garden of Allah and Sherlock Holmes in Washington) and wrote about 30 plays (Roadside, Russet Mantle and The Cherokee Night). Riggs’ mother died when he was young and he was raised by his aunt and older sister. His beloved characters of Aunt Eller and Laurey were modeled after them. AGNES DE MILLE (Original Choreographer) achieved fame both as a dancer and choreographer. Among her masterpieces are Rodeo, in which she danced, Fall River Legend and Three Virgins and a Devil. Miss de Mille changed the face of the American musical theatre with her choreography for Oklahoma!, which enjoyed a hit Broadway revival in 1979, One Touch of Venus, Bloomer Girl, Carousel, Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Paint Your Wagon and other memorable shows. Miss de Mille directed and choreographed Allegro, The Rape of Lucretia, Out of This World and Come Summer, and she choreographed the film version of Oklahoma!.
