ARUNDEL GALLERY TRAIL 2014 Incorporating the THEATRE TRAIL 14 presented by
The Gallery Trail is in its 26th year and a major event in the South East Arts Calendar, bringing together artists and makers from a diverse range of artistic disciplines. The 106 artists have worked hard to bring a body of work unique to the Gallery Trail. Each venue is a separate exhibition and celebrates the diversity of creative talent in our area. Arundel is extremely lucky to have such a vibrant and continually expanding arts scene, in which emerging and established artists’ work can be seen in 64 venues throughout the town. Many of the venues are in Arundel’s beautiful historic homes and gardens, not normally open to the public. Entry is free. There is a chance to speak to the artists themselves about their work and processes; a really special experience. The Gallery Trail is an opportunity to begin the journey of discovering and supporting artists that inspire you, and expand your own collection. This Guide can help you plan your art journey through an extraordinary range of painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery, ceramics, textiles, illustrations, and so much more. The Gallery Trail website has details of all the exhibitions and artists. We’ve been fortunate to have the Trail flags, which mark every venue, made by a wonderful group called ‘Sew Not Throw’. Poignantly, the material is from parachute fabric from the Second World War. This year marks the centenary of the beginning of the Great War. In remembrance, a sculptural installation can be seen on the Causeway roundabout close to the railway station. The Arundel Gallery Trail 2014 is now on Facebook follow us on Twitter.

The Victoria Institute
A venue for artistic, educational and social activities
In the heart of Arundel stands the much-loved Victoria Institute, a building which could be a cultural centre for the whole community, inspiring and enabling creativity for all. There are changes already underway and the trustees, management team and volunteers of this newly registered charity are keen to restore the Vic to its former glory and provide an exciting venue for: • Theatre, cinema (including live screenings), music, lectures and workshops • Dance, exercise, art for all ages • Curated art collections, exhibitions, studio space • Creative writing, literary events • Space and facilities (hot-desking) to enable new ventures and innovation • And somewhere to relax and refresh after all this endeavour A huge amount of effort, support and money (of course) is required to realise this vision. Fundraising has begun and we hope to be able to begin repairs on the roof soon - but this is only the beginning. Major renovation is required and we must improve access and facilities. Please visit us during the festival to see a presentation of our vision, enjoy plays from the Drip Action Theatre Trail, and art in the Gallery Trail, including photography from Christian Doyle and other visiting artists. We look forward to seeing you and welcome your support in helping the Vic become a viable and creative cultural centre for Arundel. Thank you.

SUSIE JENKINS, who died suddenly last autumn, was a mainstay of the Gallery Trail over many years. She first exhibited her photographs in 1997, and took part in the Trail every year thereafter. Her work was lyrical and distinctive: images that looked at first entirely abstract, but that on closer inspection revealed surfaces of worn paint on the sides of boats, or simply the play of light on water. Through her daughter-in-law Beatriz Huezo, Susie became interested in the problems of earthquake-torn El Salvador, and set up the charity Art for Life, providing funding for starter homes, a school and a health clinic. Local artists have responded magnificently to the appeal, through auctions and exhibitions, providing a fitting memorial to an artist with a keen eye and a generous heart. A selection of Susie’s work can be seen at Jackson Stops and Staff, Venue 17 on this year’s Trail.

ARUNDEL FESTIVAL
THEATRE TRAIL • 2014 •
Presented by Drip Action Theatre Sponsored by Southern Water
SAT 16th – SAT 23rd AUGUST Now in its 27th year, Drip Action continues to produce groundbreaking theatre in close-up spaces to surprise, entertain and challenge its ever-growing audiences. This year will be Drip Action’s fourteenth Trail, with eight new short plays performed over eight days in eight different venues. Again there will be the chance to see all plays in a day for those who feel fit and adventurous, or to take in a show or two on different days, combining theatre with other Festival attractions, like (to pick randomly from a fantastic programme) the Gallery Trail, music in the Square, the Bathtub Race, or a game of pétanque at Arundel Football Club. We look forward to seeing you along the way. Bill Brennan, artistic director, Drip Action Theatre Company ••••••
