New real estate regulator will help crack down on ‘dirty money’ in Vancouver British Columbia plans to create a single real estate regulator to better combat money-laundering in markets like Vancouver, where the government says dirty money has helped drive up housing prices. The provincial government intends to introduce legislation late next year that would establish a joint financial-services and real estate watchdog by the spring of 2021, the Ministry of Finance said Tuesday. The plan would bring real estate regulation — including licensing — under the purview of the B.C. Financial Services Authority, which currently regulates mortgage brokers, private pension plans and financial institutions. Having a single regulator for those areas will streamline investigations and enforcement, according to the government. Another misstep as B.C. fails to prove this tycoon’s idyllic estate was bought with embezzled money Vancouver’s dirty money figures: The smoking gun that wasn’t When it comes to money laundering in real estate, there are more unknowns than knowns Continued on page 7

Modi won’t let China turn India into another Pakistan Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration won’t let China flood India with its manufacturing products, the way it did with Pakistan. This week, Modi declined to sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Bangkok. China is the biggest member of RCEP, and its manufacturing products could flood India’s markets, once the agreement takes effect; and widen further widening the trade deficit between India and China. That’s what happened in Pakistan following the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) with China back in 2006. According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) statistics, Pakistan’s imports from China soared from $3.52billion in 2006-7 to $15.74 billion in 2017-18. Meanwhile, China’s share in Pakistan’s total world imports rose from 11.52% in the beginning of the Continued on page 7
Don Cherry fired as host of ‘Coach’s Corner’ following anti immigrant rant Longtime hockey commentator Don Cherry is out as co-host of Coach’s Corner following televised remarks in which he claimed new immigrants don’t wear poppies and implied they don’t support veterans. “Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night’s broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down,” Sportsnet president Bart Yabsley said in a statement. “During the broadcast, he made divisive remarks that do not represent our values or what we stand for.” Cherry, 85, made the comments during
his weekly Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada that sparked fierce condemnation from the public, politicians and the National Hockey League. “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.” Cherry has not responded publicly since the comments were made.
New Hindu temple to be built at disputed Ayodhya site, Mosque to be built on separate land, orders Supreme Court India’s Supreme Court paved the way for construction of a Ram Temple at Ayodhya as a five-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi unanimously decreed the decades-old title dispute in favour of Ram Lalla. In a 1045-page historic verdict, the top court reversed the Allahabad High Court’s September 30, 2010 verdict equally dividing the disputed 2.77 acre land between Ram Lalla, Nirmohi Akhara and Muslims, terming it “legally unsustainable”. “Even as a matter of maintaining public peace and tranquility, the solution which commended itself to the High Court is not feasible.
The forces of British India played a major role in both World Wars. Nearly 1,700,000 men and women of the Commonwealth including some 169,700 from the forces of undivided British India died in the 1914-18 and 1939-45 Wars. In the first World War, the strength of the British Indian Army rose to one million and it increased to two and a half million in the World War II.
Hindus made a better case, Waqf Board couldn’t prove exclusive possession of Ayodhya site: Supreme Court Supreme Court on Saturday ruled in favor of Hindu temple on a disputed religious ground in the country’s north and ordered that alternative land be given to Muslims to build a mosque – a verdict in a highly contentious case that was immediately deplored by a key Muslim body. The dispute over land ownership has been one of India’s most heated issues, with Hindu nationalists demanding a temple on the site in the town of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh state for more than a century.
