Read the bomber his rights, treat him like the citizen he is Fyodor Dostoyevsky once said you could gauge the humanity of a nation by the condition of its prisons. By extension, another gauge should be how a nation treats alleged criminals, something the U.S. has long prided itself on, in light of the insistence that a suspect be given his or her Miranda rights and treated as innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We have routinely been ignoring those principles, unfortunately, since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. The most emphatic evidence of this is the confused status of the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where 166 detainees reportedly were being held as of last month. Amnesty International calls “Gitmo,” as it is known, “the gulag of our times,” a reference to prison camps maintained in the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the times of Stalin and Krushchev. But Gitmo is not the topic here. The subject is the April 15 bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, allegedly by the brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev from Dagostan, which is next door to Chechnya, that troubled former Soviet republic. The Boston Marathon is staged on the observed holiday of Patriots’ Day, though the real Patriots’ Day is April 19, in honor of the battles of Lexington and Concord, Mass., on April 19, 1775, at the opening of the American Revolutionary War. April 19 also happens to be the date on which, in 1995, Timothy McVeigh blew up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 and wounding 680. And it is the same date that, two years earlier, saw the end of the Waco, Texas, standoff between David Koresh and his Branch Davidians, and federal authorities, which killed 76 and wounded nine. Kind of a big day on the national calendar in some strange ways. To be clear, no one has linked the Boston bombing to any earlier violent incidents, except in rumor and the blogosphere. Nut jobs like Alex Jones, the rightwing radio attack dog working out of Austin, Texas, of course says that

the U.S. government’s own intelligence agencies staged the marathon bombing, just as they allegedly (according to Jones) staged the 9/11 attacks and the Sandy Hook shootings. It’s all part of a conspiracy to gather up all the guns and put “real Americans” in concentration camps being built all over the Midwest by President Obama and his socialistic cronies. Or some such blather. But Jones would say that, wouldn’t he? That’s how he keeps his listeners panting for more. One intriguing outcome of the bombing, though, has been the debate over the police decision to not read Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the younger of the alleged bombers, his Miranda rights when he was captured. Relying on a little-known public safety exemption, police have announced he never will be read his Miranda rights, because authorities worry there are more bombs somewhere that could kill more people. I’m not buying that, just as I didn’t buy the underlying reasons behind the PATRIOT Act when it was passed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The idea that we can jettison our basic civil rights any time we get mad is simply wrong. Sure, the bombing was an outrageous act, an idiotic act as far as I can tell. If it was the work of the two Tsarnaev brothers, they clearly couldn’t think their way out of a wet paper bag, in terms of anything more coherent than the making of explosive devices. And, if they did it, they killed people at random and should be punished. But to rush to judgment, kneejerk style, is antithetical to America’s founding principles. If we’re going to start suspending civil liberties every time someone attacks us, we may as well toss the U.S. Constitution out the window and prepare for a totalitarian dictatorship, because that’s what we’d be asking for. He’s a naturalized citizen, so read him his rights and, if he lives, interrogate the hell out of him, within legal limits, and prosecute him. Otherwise, we’re no better than Stalin was and we may yet see gulags sprouting from the wheat fields.

festival The 5Point Film Festival enters just its fifth year, but it already seems like an institution. In fact, it seemed that way in its second year. A great part of the success has been the match between the event and the setting: Carbondale is just right for a festival devoted to adventure, the environment, foreign cultures and raising consciousness about all of those. This year’s festival, running Thursday through Sunday, April 25-28, explores such locations as 6,000-meter peaks in Pakistan and waterfalls in Mexican jungles to the less exotic: cranberry bogs; ranches in Marble; local hockey rinks. Along with dozens of films, divided into six screening programs, there are the Dirtbag Diary conversations, an ice cream social, a photography exhibition and more.

The Canadian film “Down the Line” has its U.S. premiere Sunday, April 28, at the 5Point Film Festival in Carbondale.

currentevents Choral music It’s sad that Ray Adams died young. The devoted director of the Aspen Choral Society, and the conductor of Handel’s Messiah, a 35-year-old Christmastime tradition in the valley, Adams was 60 when he died last month. But Adams, despite his struggles with physical and mental health, was all about creating joy with music, spreading joy through playing and singing. So the Celebration of Music concerts (Friday, April 26 at First United Methodist Church in Glenwood Springs, and Saturday, April 27 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Aspen) are specifically intended as The late Aspen Choral Society director and uplifting occasions. A few conductor Ray Adams will be honored with a pair of Celebration of Music concerts, in dozen members of the Choral Glenwood Springs and Aspen. Society will gather to sing two of Adams’ compositions — “The Cradle Song” and “I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose” — along with Beethoven, Broadway tunes, and a passage from Fauré’s Requiem. Singers Jeannie Walla and Pat Holloran will serve as emcees, and the concerts will raise funds to pay medical expenses. Helping to assure an upbeat tone is the news that the Choral Society will carry on, with local performer Paul Dankers taking over as director.

Visual arts The Aspen Art Museum joins in the worldwide Slow Art Day movement, on Saturday, April 27, a day set aside to focus on art and the art of seeing. For its part, the museum will revisit its Imaginary Thing, a 2008 project in which 30 objects were buried over 30 days underground at the museum grounds, creating an unseen exhibition. Museum director Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson and a handful of prominent local artists will be in attendance to discuss — or simply ponder — Imaginary Thing, as well as the more visible arts.

The gulch (Spar) carved out along a fault line is the most dominant feature of Aspen Mountain.

The Spar in Spar Gulch you know spar gulch either from the horror of navigating through throngs of people at the end of the day as skiers exit the mountain or from the pleasure of skiing this natural halfpipe on an uncrowded day. Riding the gondola, you notice how steep the gulch’s sides are, how large a feature it is relative to the face of the mountain, and how it is the dominant drainage path. Knowing its mining history may add to your appreciation. “Spar” is a Cornish miner’s word for quartz. Over time, any rock with the opaque luster and crystal structure of quartz was referred to as spar. The significance of spar to miners is its association with mineral content. Gold, silver and copper often are found in spar or in geological proximity to quantities of spar. Spotting spar (if it had any mineral hints) leads to prospecting sites. Spar Gulch is the result of erosion and movement along a long fault line. That erosion exposed the geology of Aspen Mountain and several places with veins of spar, in this case quartzite. The first claim filed in Aspen in 1879 was one such location and, not coincidentally, was named the Spar. Spar is not used sparingly. There

is also a Spar claim in Ashcroft and in nearly every other mining district. Aspen even had the Spar Hotel in the 1890s. The Spar Gulch Mining Co. operated a claim (not the Spar) in the gulch.

gulch. In the early years, they were challenged by spring flooding if they were near the bottom of the gulch. Fabulous silver ore was easily accessible from the gulch, and the early profitable mines were located there. Over time, larger ore deposits

were found at deeper depths and were accessed from tunnels that were not in the gulch, but the claims along the gulch were the locations. In later years many claims combined into one company, the Spar Consolidated. In 1890, a tramway was constructed from town to Tourtelotte Park passing through Spar Gulch. It carried ore down to the railroad line and coal, timber and other materials up the mountain. Side lines were built perpendicular to the main cable to bring ore from mines on the sides of the gulch, automatically transferring through a series of ore bins from one tram to the other. Today nearly every Aspen skier passes through Spar Gulch at one time or another. In the mining days, a high percentage of Aspen’s silver passed through or came from Spar Gulch. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Benziger Redux This is the 300th edition of this column. Please hold the applause. In the nearly half-dozen years since the first column, I have discussed hundreds of wines. But the first winery mentioned in WineInk in June 2007 was Sonoma’s Benziger Family Winery. The catalyst for that first story was a Wine Spectator cover story featuring a photo of Benziger founder Mike Benziger and biodynamic farm expert Alan York paddling a canoe on the winery’s Kelly J. reclamation pond. The Hayes story recounted how the Benzigers had, as a family, made a decision in the 1990s that despite their current success they should replant their 85-acre home vineyard and institute the practice of biodynamic winemaking. This spring I had the opportunity to visit the winery and was once again inspired by how the Benziger family’s devotion to their mission has continued to produce great wines. But beyond that it has encouraged a generation of winemakers to rethink how they grow grapes and make wines. “Mike came out here from upstate New York in the 1970s looking for a new way of life,” Chris Benziger, Mike’s younger brother who is now partner in the winery, explained to me as we stood just outside the Benziger winery on a stunningly warm spring afternoon. “He worked in a wine shop, then was a cellar rat before he took a loan from our father and bought this vineyard.” The vineyard is right near the Jack London Ranch, just above the town of Glen Ellen. As we drove an electric-powered golf cart up to a vista overlooking vines thriving in the natural bowl carved by an ancient volcano that formed the vineyard, Chris told me about the genesis of the decision. “Our entire family eventually moved out here and we built a good winery. We were selling well and making money. And we were farming the way everyone else was, using pesticides to kill bugs, putting vines wherever we wanted,” he said, shaking his head as he reminisced. “But something was wrong. The vines were looking sick;

we were having landslides from the runoff. It just felt like things were out of balance.” So Mike, looking for alternatives, called York, an expert in the field of biodynamics. First proposed in a series of lectures by an Austrian philosopher named Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s (Steiner also founded the Waldorf schools), York explained that switching to a biodynamic environment could cure the land and the vines. York detailed the principles

cow at specific times, coinciding with cycles of the moon. These are filled with other organic materials that are then used as “sprays” on the soils and vines. As radical and difficult as the process seemed, the Benzigers committed in 1996 to changing the way they ran their vineyards. As they state on their website, they approached the cultivation of Benziger’s Sonoma Mountain estate “with the belief that a vineyard

of the concept, explaining how biodynamics combine healthy, holistic farming and the earth’s natural cycles to create organic environments for plants to propagate. But change would come at a price. It would require tearing out vines and refraining from using pesticides and chemicals. It would mean “closing the circle” in the vineyards and using all of the natural attributes already found on the property to grow the grapes. The family had to make a decision. To adopt a system that would literally take five years to “remake” their vineyards would be expensive in both time and resources. And it was seen by many as “out there” or “just plain weird.” One of the elements of biodynamic farming calls for burying the horns and skull of a locally raised

farmed with a mental, physical and spiritual commitment is the best way to create wine that reveals a profound sense of place and the passion of the winegrowing team.” A great mission statement if there ever was one. In 2000, Benziger became the first Demeter Certified Biodynamic winery in Sonoma County. Today the vineyards are healthy. People come from all over the world to tour the property, see the insectary where bugs thrive and fight predators, meet the Scottish Highland cattle whose fertilizer nourishes the vineyards, and most importantly drink the wines that have become some of Sonoma County’s most admired. “It wasn’t easy,” Chris says in what must be considered an

understatement. “But it completely changed the way that we look at what we do and our wines show the difference with each vintage. You can definitely taste the terroir, this place, when you drink a bottle.” Benzigers thrive in Sonoma. More than 20 members of the family live and work around the vineyards of the area. A courageous and difficult decision made nearly 20 years ago has transformed not just their lives but those of countless others who have reconsidered how to interact with their vineyards. Kelly J. Comfy in the Kitchen The Little Nell invites in its youngest protégées The Little Nell is set to share its secrets for warm hospitality and delicious food with the next generation of Aspen cooks this summer by partnering with Helen DeFrance, a chef, cookbook author and Aspen resident. DeFrance will teach kids, ages 4 years and older, basic cooking skills. “Comfy in the Kitchen,” a series of four Amiee white cooking classes for kids beazley “will feature lessons on how to create both savory and sweet items,” says DeFrance, who will help guide kids on the importance of balanced meals as she also trains them how to properly use cooking tools and stir up a new dish in each class. “It’s all about being comfortable in the kitchen. Kids will learn to

follow recipes, measure, mix and chop, and they will bring home fun and delicious recipes the whole family will love.” DeFrance is no stranger to the kitchen or to helping children find their way around it. She has been teaching children’s cooking classes for 10 years and discovering and encouraging mini-chefs in the making, including creating and running the “Kitchen Full of Kids” program at the acclaimed Blackberry Farm in Tennessee. She is also the author of two cookbooks: “At Home Café: Gatherings for Family and Friends” and “At Home Café: Great Food and Fun for Everyone.” DeFrance credits her dynamic, hands-on approach to cooking with kids in part to her education background, where her emphasis was on Montessori training, a method

of teaching based on hands-on, experiential learning. DeFrance understands the importance of engaging children in the learning process and brings this concept into the kitchen. Her cooking classes not only involve children in every aspect of planning the family meal, but also teaches them the source of the ingredients and the steps it takes to make a successful meal. 5Point: Inspired, inspiring and inspirational the tagline for the 5Point Film Festival is “inspiring adventure,” and the

adventures that come most quickly to mind would be of the variety seen in the films presented at the festival: kayaking, biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, traveling into faraway cultures. But there is an activity of a more indoor type that 5Point seems to have inspired since the festival was established in Carbondale four years ago. 5Point itself is motivating filmmakers to create works, with the hopes that they will be screened at the festival. “We would be flattered if people thought of us as making them think creatively,” said Sarah Wood, who will be overseeing her first festival as executive director when 5Point throws its annual bash, April 25 through 28. “I think we’re just lucky

that there are people here who tie in with the kind of films we’re looking for. We’ve given them some help to make those films, but we’re not the cause. It goes back and forth.” Wood is probably exhibiting one the five guiding points behind 5Point: humility. (The others: respect, commitment, purpose and balance.) Two of the events featured this year have the 5Point Film Festival as a producer: “Participate” (April 26 at 7 p.m.), a multi-media performance piece that pairs local poet and coffeeshop owner Wade Newsom with

a trio of Aspen High School students. Carbondale filmmaker Anson Fogel, who came into prominence in 2011, when his mountain-climbing piece “Cold,” produced by 5Point founder Julie Kennedy, premiered in Carbondale and went on to earn awards at the prominent Banff Film Festival, has two films in this year’s festival: “Cascada,” about kayaking waterfalls in Mexico, and “Death of the Bar T,” a 17-minute work about ranching in Marble. And there is Summers Moore, a local photographer who, after

screened at the festival. “They said, ‘Here’s the quality we’ve created on our last film; we’d like to make another one for 5Point,’” Wood said. “We saw they were worthy, that they could make something great for the big screen. We didn’t promise them anything; we had to see it before we accepted anything.” In February, the trio showed 5Point a rough cut. The festival staff gave them feedback and showed them a handful of other films “that might help them find their voice and style and tone,” Wood said. The filmmakers

produced another cut, which Wood said was “98 percent there.” Eventually, “On an Edge,” about the dedication that a group of high school students put into hockey, was accepted. “It’s not our film. It’s their film,” Wood said. “We let them know they needed to make their piece. But we were happy to give some 5Point feedback.” “Vaya a la Cumbre,” by Zach Ornitz and Ollie Nieuwland-Zlotnicki, was given an early screening at a 5Point event at the Wheeler Opera House in January. The screening caught the attention of Outside TV, which is going to start showing the film. (“Vaya a la Cumbre” also showed in Aspen earlier this month, at Aspen Shortsfest.) Fitz Cahall, who has brought his “Dirtbag Diaries” podcast to 5Point previously, had footage of Dempster biking across Kyrgyzstan. The terrain and the distance were obstacles enough, but the real challenge was cultural rather than geographical — the outdated maps, the corrupt military. “The whole message he brings is, ‘When the road ends, do you keep pedaling? If the path is not clear, do you keep going?’” Wood said. Cahall hadn’t planned to make a proper film, but he showed what he had to 5Point, which went into encouragement mode. “We couldn’t commit in the early stages, but we said, ‘Hey, go for it,’” Wood said. When Cahall submitted a third cut of the film a month ago, 5Point got on board, not only to screen the film but to serve as producer. “I think that’s the role 5Point plays most — we see potential in projects and people and try to get the pieces together, support the filmmakers,” Wood said. “It’s not so much the dollar amount — we’re just a nonprofit. It’s the support and encouragement that we’re able to give so filmmakers can do their best work. “And when we get behind a project, we get behind it for the entire run. We’ll support the production team in whatever way we can. That’s the way we foster the filmmakers and the community.”

my cell phone informed me a few days ago that if I didn’t do some deleting, I wouldn’t be able to receive any more messages. This was surprising, since I don’t use my cell phone all that often. But I also saw the opportunity in going back through my old messages, to see what was on my mind over the last eight months or so.

Some 75 percent of my messages were to my daughter, which makes abundant sense: Olivia’s a teenager, addicted to texting, and also in need of being picked up from ballet and school and friend’s houses, which involves minute-to-minute adjustments in plans. But the fact is that most of the messages had little or nothing to do with picking up or dropping off or reminding me to buy bubbly water from City Market. Virtually all of the texts were about the Denver Nuggets: injury reports, TV-watching plans, jokes about the players, questions about former Nuggets, game updates. The March 21 game against the Philadelphia 76ers — the miracle finish where the Nuggets were down by five with 14 seconds to go and somehow won, without even needing overtime — prompted a flurry of texts back and forth: “Nuggs down 71-10” “No shaqtin on that play” “whose ball?” “NUGGETS BALL!!!” And finally: “unbelievable!” If someone else had gone through these messages, it might make me squirm, the revelation of just how obsessed I am with how, as New York Knicks diehard Woody Allen put it in “Annie Hall,” “a bunch of pituitary cases stuff a ball through a hoop.” I’m 49 years old — and I can tell you, off the top of my head, the three teams the Nuggets have lost to at home this season (Washington and Minnesota, both of which still drive me up a wall, and Miami, which I’ve made my peace with). I’ve got many of the hallmarks of an adult (responsible parent, dependable employee), and I am still not over the giddiness from the Nuggets’ recent 15-game winning streak. I get my prostate checked, I get the oil changed in my car, I’ve even stopped wearing pajamas to work — yet I have staked a large portion of my happiness on the physical skills of a bunch of 20-something strangers who happen to be wearing Denver Nuggets uniforms this season. Corinthians advises us to “put away childish things.” But just how childish is this obsession with professional sports? Sure, it makes me yell at the television and has me checking box scores the minute the game ends. But it also connects me

to something bigger than myself, and at the same time allows me to lose myself in the small details of what is, ultimately, a harmless distraction. It gets my heart pumping. And putting an unreasonable amount of faith in the Nuggets makes me address life’s big issues: Expectations. Anger.

I’ve never seen my daughter so excited as when she got to pose for a photo with Kenneth Faried. Of course, I was even more excited. Acceptance (of Danilo Gallinari’s season-ending knee injury). Even mortality: What if the Nuggets, who have never even been in an NBA finals, don’t win a championship in my lifetime? And compassion: My God, what it must be like to be a longtime Chicago Cubs fan! Juvenile or not, this passion runs deep. In the last 20 or so years, there is exactly one book I’ve read more than once: Bill Simmons’ “The Book of Basketball,” which, despite more

And that’s nothing compared to what’s going on now, with the Nuggets, along with 15 other teams, in the early stages of this compelling two-month slog known as the NBA playoffs. I know that I’m not alone in this. Millions of adults, many far more mature than I, have a similar devotion to their teams. The pro sportsindustrial complex isn’t making its money off the disposable income of 8-year-old fans. I also know that I’m Jewish,

not Christian, and thus can exalt the wisdom of Nuggets coach George Karl over the teachings of Corinthians.

Becoming a fan

The house where I grew up, in Livingston, N.J., was on a flat, corner lot. It was bigger than the neighboring lots, so our yard became the sports yard. It was enough of a draw that kids from surrounding neighborhoods came to play football, baseball and basketball. If my memory is right, one of those was a kid who would put on too much weight for people to believe he was an athlete, but back then Chris Christie was a baseball player, a hard-hitting catcher who went on to play for our state-champion high school team. My own talent level was modest — no varsity teams for me, no six-days-aweek of practice. Which meant I could round out my identity as a sports nut with TV-watching, and when my dad, through his jewelry business, got season tickets to the Knicks, games at Madison Square Garden. Still, I don’t remember being especially rabid or knowledgeable about basketball at the time. (This probably had much to do with the Knicks teams of the mid-’70s, which had collapsed with the same astonishing efficiency that Walt Frazier and Willis Reed had used to win championships just a few years earlier.) I was more passionate about baseball, and there were years where my day-today mood was dictated by whether the New York Mets won or lost. When I moved to Aspen, as a 28-year-old, the first thing to fall away was sports on TV. I had other things to learn about: playing guitar, snowboarding, writing, concertgoing, and living in the mountains, which I was dangerously unequipped for. I remember watching the Nuggets stun the Seattle Supersonics in the 1994 playoffs — the first time a No. 8 seed beat a top seed — but I wasn’t a Nuggets fan, just a vestigial basketball fan. Getting married and having a child gave me a lot more at-home time, which translated into a lot more sports-watching time. Because I hadn’t changed the default setting, the Knicks were still my team. But they weren’t Colorado’s team, and the local broadcasts I got on a nightly basis were of the Denver Nuggets. In the fog of early parenthood, my allegiance shifted almost without my noticing. The Nuggs were abysmal then, and

Nuggets of knowledge Five things you probably didn’t know about the Denver Nuggets: 1. The Denver Nuggets date back to 1949, when the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League merged to form the NBA. That franchise lasted just one season; the current franchise originated as the Denver Rockets of the ABA. (Bonus fact: The current team was originally named the Larks, but changed the name before the first season began.) 2. Rocky, the Nuggets mascot since 1990, is retiring after this season. Rocky rocks; he is easily the best mascot in professional sports. (In fact, he is the only tolerable mascot in pro sports; my aversion to mascots goes back to even before my unfortunate encounter with the loathsome Phillie Phanatic.) 3. Chris Marlowe, the play-by-play announcer for Nuggets games on Altitude TV, was captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, which won a gold medal. 4. Former Nugget Joey Graham’s full name is Joey Joseph Graham. (One night, three seasons ago, the Nuggets TV broadcast included the player’s middle name whenever the player was mentioned. They should make that a once-a-year tradition.) 5. On Dec. 13, 1983, the Nuggets scored 184 points. They lost, though, to the Detroit Pistons, in the highest-scoring NBA game ever. (The two-team point total was 370; the previous high had been 337.) It was a triple overtime game, but it’s worth noting that the Nuggets averaged nearly 124 points that season. And Detroit really should have threatened the 200-point mark: They missed 23 foul shots that night.

part of the fun was rooting for them to lose. I didn’t have to root hard, and they rarely disappointed: In the 1997-’98 season, they threatened to match the worst record ever in the NBA.

It’s basketball, baby The turning point for the Nuggets franchise came in 2003, when the Detroit Pistons, in the NBA draft, gambled on the Serbian Darko Milicic, leaving Carmelo Anthony, the star of NCAA tournament champion Syracuse, for Denver to snatch up. The turnaround was instant: the Nuggets became relevant, a perennial playoff team, and a team bold enough to add some truly interesting pieces: the enigmatic scoring machine and former MVP Allen Iverson, the erratic but explosive J.R. Smith, the intimidating and puzzling Chris “Birdman” Anderson. They also added a steadying influence in Denver native Chauncey Billups, but the Nuggets seemed snake-bitten in the playoffs. There were Anthony’s migraine headaches; there was a blown goaltending call that cost the Nuggets a win in a series-opening game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. And there was the 2010 season, when Coach Karl was sidelined with cancer, and acting head coach Adrian Dantley, painfully overmatched, steered the team to an upset loss in the first round to the Utah Jazz. A recent report had Dantley working as a guard — not a point guard, but a crossing guard — in Maryland. I feel almost safe. The major turning point for me, though, came on Feb. 15, 2009. It was a contest I barely cared about, the NBA All-Star Game, and I watched it as I often watched basketball: volume off, moderate focus. Ours just wasn’t a sports household. My wife, Candice, wasn’t a fan; my daughter was into dancing and books, with no apparent interest in team sports. But on this day Olivia climbed onto my lap in the big chair and started asking questions: What were the

rules? Who were these players? What were these teams? She hasn’t stopped asking questions — she occasionally answers mine — and while my obsession with basketball might be a childish one, it is not a solitary one. For four years, most of Olivia’s nights end with the lights being turned out and then, in an ascending, hopeful voice, the words: “Basketball story?” I oblige with tales of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, the history of severe injuries to No. 1 draft picks, the time Kenyon Martin, then a Nugget, drew a technical foul for clapping in an opponent’s face. Olivia occasionally faults me as a parent for failing to teach her to play sports. I counter that, to my credit, she knows the middle names of most of the players from the Nuggets 2009-’10 roster. Our obsession seems to have been blessed by a higher power — the Nuggets front office. Considering we live several hundred miles from Denver, we have had a mystical number of occasions of meeting people associated with the Nuggets (strength coach; p.r. director; an employee of the company, Kroenke Sports Enterprises, that owns the team), and invariably their initial response to hearing we are basketball fans is to jot down their contact info with a promise of tickets for a game. Maybe they figure we live in Aspen and don’t need free tickets? Maybe they figure we’re a four-hour drive away and won’t actually make it to the Pepsi Center? Our tickets generally come with a backstage pass that allows us to meet players after the game. I’ve never seen my daughter so excited as when she got to pose for a photo with Kenneth Faried. Of course, I was even more excited. The first game we attended, we caught more magic. One of our favorite

Nuggets, Ty Lawson, after a sluggish start, caught fire from the three-point line and ended up setting an NBA record, hitting 10 consecutive threepointers. The blessing we received on another front, from Mom, has been somewhat more mixed. She has been the responsible adult, imposing limits on TV time. But she has also been approving of the situation, even sharing our enthusiasm to a degree, and generously allowed the “special games” exception to the no-gameson-weeknights rule, and we have been clever in invoking the clause. (“They’re playing the Celtics!” “We’re on a 22-game home win streak!” “But San Antonio is a potential first-round match-up!”) There is one side benefit, largely overlooked, in my hoops obsession. It is so consuming that it leaves no room for other rooting interests. Once the NBA season ends, I’m wiped out and other than keeping an eye on offseason hoops developments, sports are done for me.

Go Nuggets The other big factor, apart from father-daughter bonding, in my stillgrowing fanaticism is the Nuggets themselves. The organization has, over the past decade, proved itself savvy,

grounded and resilient. They have defused potential distractions (e.g., Iverson and Smith); consistently turned low draft picks into valuable players (Lawson, Faried); and found the talent in other team’s discards. When Carmelo Anthony essentially forced a trade two years ago, determined to be in a bigger, flashier city, it was widely predicted that the Nuggets were headed for a sustained decline: Who would stay in Denver when you could manipulate your way to New York or Miami? But Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri engineered a deal that brought to Denver a package of players who quickly proved they had been undervalued. The strength of the organization, the skills of Coach Karl, and good fortune have come together in

what has been a beautiful season to watch unfold. After stumbling through an early schedule that was brutally unbalanced between road and home games, the Nuggets came into their own around the holidays. On Dec. 26, they dismantled the Lakers, and my New Year got off to an even better start as the Nuggs thumped the other Los Angeles team, the Clippers, on Jan. 1, ending the Clippers’ 17-game winning streak. Beginning Feb. 23, they started beating everybody, with a 15-game winning streak and a still-intact 24-game winning streak in Denver. Among those victories was the March 1 thriller against Oklahoma City, with Olivia and me in attendance, in which Lawson hit the game-winning shot with a second

remaining. (Among the highlights of my 2013 has been Lawson developing that pull-up jumper. Deadly.) Not only have they won, they’ve done it with style. Their uptempo approach is a pleasure to watch; I love hearing announcers on the national broadcasts, accustomed to a slower pace and more predictable strategy, gush over the Nuggets. They are lovable in their oddness, punctuated by Javale McGee’s tendency to alternate unique mishaps with equally unmatchable displays of athleticism. Most endearing has been their resourcefulness. Commentators claim that an NBA team can’t compete for a title without a superstar, yet the Nuggets compiled the fourth-best record in the NBA this season by having a different player step into

the starring role as needed. They handled the injury to Gallinari without breaking stride; the injury led to the emergence of 20-year-old French rookie Evan Fournier. In the first game of these playoffs, 37-yearold back-up Andre Miller stepped up with his best game of the season, a superstar-esque 18 points in the fourth quarter, and the game-winning basket — the first time in his life, he claims, to have ever hit a last second game-winner. I close here the way I have closed numerous emails these past few years to friends who know of my obsession, unsuspecting people I’ve just introduced myself to, acquaintances who thought my music obsession left room for no other obsessions. Go Nuggets.

‘The Soledad Crucifixion’ In Nancy Wood’s newest novel, “The Soledad Crucifixion,” we find ourselves in Camposanto in the territory of New Mexico in the year 1897. Lorenzo Soledad has just been nailed to a cross. “On this, the last day of his life, the priest found himself thinking about birds.” More a work of surrealism than magical realism, “The Soledad Crucifixion” grabs the reader with wonder and fear on the first page and doesn’t let go. The unusual protagonist — a murderer, fornicator and Roman Catholic priest who spent his childhood in a Texas bordello — brings the novel to life with his complex history and churning character. Calabaza people hide in the mountains, trying to avoid the encroaching white invaders. There, he finds a new and completely different universe. Village members are called spiritual custodians: the Custodian of Silence, a mute boy who carves beautifully and attaches himself to the priest; the Custodian of War, an ancient but vital warrior who shoots at locomotives to stop progress; the Custodian of Memory; and many more. The Calabazas have already fled other places where representatives of Soledad’s church denounced what they saw as the tribe’s sinful practices and beliefs. It is no surprise that the Calabazas return that hostility in full. Braided into Soledad’s tale, which begins years before his crucifixion, is another story set many years in the future, in which two priests voyage from the Vatican to New Mexico to

determine whether the long-dead Soledad is now a candidate for canonization. Author of eight volumes of poetry as well as 18 other books, Wood writes lyrically, creating a universe where miracles can and do happen — not just once but frequently. In Camposanto, God needs neither church nor priest. “Earth and sky coming together like a man and woman. That eagle. Those sheep. Each thing is sacred. Use your eyes, Padre. It’s all there,” advises the Custodian of Stories. Eventually, the Padre takes heed — and so does the reader.
