What might the world do with an extra $32 trillion? HOW MUCH MONEY is a trillion dollars? Well, it’s a lot, on that much we certainly can agree. One website, PageTutor.com, answered the question physically, geometrically, by estimating the size of a block of $100 bills making up $1 million. It has about the same dimensions as an expensive air conditioning unit that might sit outside a fancy home on a concrete block, or a large-capacity washing machine in the basement of that same home. To depict the same size blocks gathered together to make $1 trillion, the site created an image of those blocks, stacked two high (about the height of a typical man), that stretches out like an airport tarmac or a fat football gridiron. It’s huge. And it appears that the equivalent of roughly 21 to 32 of those fat football gridirons, in U.S. dollars, are stashed away in about 120,000 offshore accounts nestled in perhaps 170 tax-haven countries where secrecy and privacy are valued much more highly than, say, religion or honesty. That’s according to a study by a man named James S. Henry, former chief economist for an outfit called McKinsey & Co. Henry now crunches numbers for something called Tax Justice Network, and was cited in a recent report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The ICIJ estimates that $32 trillion is about the same as the entire economies of the U.S. and Japan combined. Their ringing indictment of this immense fraud comes from an exhaustive examination of 2.5 million banking files uncovered by the ICIJ. According to the online report by ICIJ, 86 journalists from 46 countries waded hip-deep into the numbers in the data files, and determined over a 15-month investigation that the flow of illicit earnings alone amounts to between $1 trillion and $1.6 trillion a year being channeled into these offshore accounts. Given that the reporters’ analysis covered 30 years, the total amount

they came up with seems about right. But terribly wrong. That’s because, amazingly enough to those of us who actually work for our meager wages, much of this offshore pile was accumulated within the decade just past. So while the global economy was tanking, the über-rich were busily packing away their fantastic hordes of money into secret accounts that were undetectable and untouchable by the governments of the countries where these people live. That means that as much as $32 trillion was being sucked out of the global economy as it was starting to circle the drain in 2008, and the sucking has continued and even accelerated in the years since. How all this relates to the ongoing economic doldrums of the world, I cannot say. That would take another 15 months of diligent research and reporting, which I hope the ICIJ is doing right now. But I can say this: It seems to me that the accumulation of this kind of wealth in relatively few hands is anything but healthy in a macroeconomic sense. I have long believed that money is kind of like the world’s reserve of potable water. There is only so much of it in existence, and if we let the greedy and the criminal among us horde it and control it, the rest of us will suddenly find ourselves dying of thirst. And that is just what is happening on a global scale right now. As the world’s wealthiest manage to accumulate and hide more and more of this relatively scant resource, too many of the rest of us don’t have enough to simply stay alive and even marginally comfortable. But if you listen to the Mitt Romneys of the world, and probably the Barack Obamas, too, this is the way the economy SHOULD work. We need the rich to get ever richer, so they can create companies that employ the rest of us and keep things moving. Except that’s not the way it’s working out, and this $32 trillion slush fund is the proof.

THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION POPULAR MUSIC

Singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart makes his Aspen debut Saturday, May 4 at Belly Up.

THOUGH THERE ARE plenty of music acts that fit in the “freak folk” genre, the label seems to have been invented for Devendra Banhart. Or if not specifically created for Banhart, at least it seems to suit him uniquely. Everything about the 31-year-old singer-songwriter is freakish. A recent phone conversation with him became a wild, colorful ramble through the music he heard as a child in Venezuela, the influence of skateboarding on his music, and the many meanings of the word “mala,” which is also the title of his latest album. “Mala,” released in March, features songs about the 12th-century German writer St. Hildegard von Bingen and the late professional skateboarder Keenan Milton. Banhart once gave his band the name, Spiritual Bonerz (the “z” was silent). Not to be overlooked is that the music is freakishly good — otherworldly folk that draws inspiration from South America, literature, classical and wherever else that unusual mind travels. Banhart makes his Aspen debut Saturday, May 4 at Belly Up.

“Mountains of the Moon,” by Aspen filmmaker Bob Rafelson, will be screened Thursday, May 9, at the Wheeler Opera House.

A COUPLE OF DECADES ago, an Aspen Times colleague of mine had over his desk a poster for the film “Mountains of the Moon,” which he vowed was the best film ever made. Most everything this colleague said had to be taken with a question mark, and how was it that a movie I’d never heard of could be that great? Intrigued, I tracked down a copy and was amazed. This was brilliant: on one hand, an epic about the 19th-century search for the headwaters of the Nile River, and on the other a character study of the British explorers, Captian Richard Burton and Lieutenant John Speke, and the obstacles they faced in their quest. I was further awed to learn that the filmmaker behind the movie, Bob Rafelson, lived in Aspen. Rafelson will be in attendance for a conversation when “Mountains of the Moon” is screened, from a 70mm print, on Thursday, May 9, as part of the Wheeler Opera House’s Farewell to Film series.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

This seventh-grade class from turn-of-the-century Aspen would have expanded the population, had they

HOW MANY HAVE LIVED HERE? during the 1890s, Aspen had become a large city by western states’ standards; however, at any given time over the last century, the town’s population could be described only as tiny. Yet it is amazing how many people have at one time called Aspen “home.”

I FREQUENTLY RECEIVE emails from genealogy hobbyists requesting help finding information about their ancestors. The typical request reads, “I know my (relative) worked in Aspen in (year). I think he may have been a miner. Have you ever run across the name (name)?” We marvel at the transience of modern Americans, who move on average every five years, as if those migrations were something new. Western states’ pioneers of the 19th-century were even more greatly afflicted with wanderlust. The American West’s job and business opportunities were largely tied to mining. Each new discovery attracted residents from the previous “new” discovery. If someone worked in Aspen as a miner, they had also worked in several other Colorado mining towns plus, most likely, mining towns in other states. Even as late as the 1920s miners drifted from one mining town to another. In just a

8

F

Ma y 2 - 8 , 2013

couple of years, my father worked as a miner in three towns in Colorado, two in Utah, one in Nevada, plus two in Arizona. Even ranchers and farmers, who were much more prone to settling in

the above passed through Aspen. By 1890, Aspen’s population reached around 5,000, but by 1900, 2,000 had moved on. By 1910 the population had dropped to just less than 2,000 and a decade later

SKIING BROUGHT POPULATION CHANGES TO ASPEN THAT RESEMBLED THOSE OF THE MINING ERA. ALTHOUGH THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PERMANENT RESIDENTS REMAINED RELATIVELY SMALL, THE NUMBER WHO PASSED THROUGH BALLOONED BEYOND EXPECTATION. one location, sought greener pastures and worked their way west from Ohio. When a rancher/farmer passed his property to his eldest child, the younger siblings moved on to other work or to find their own property. After the Civil War, southerners joined the westward migration in search of a new beginning. Many of

another 1,000 had left. Ending that precipitous decline, the population hovered around 1,000 through 1960, when it totaled 1,100. Skiing brought population changes to Aspen that resembled those of the mining era. Although the total number of permanent residents remained relatively small, the number

who passed through ballooned beyond expectation. Whenever you reveal an Aspen residence, often others respond, “I worked in Aspen for a season.” Summer or winter, thousands have resided in Aspen before college, during a summer college break, after college for a break, for a stint with the Forest Service, throughout an extended camping period, and even as a member of a 1960s commune. Youth of the 1970s and 1980s spent their wanderlust in New York, San Francisco, Aspen and Hawaii. If you moved to any of the above, you also tried out one or more of the others, practically defining Aspen as a stage of life. If all those born in Aspen had “bolted their wandering in” when they “got the urge for going,” as in Joni Mitchell’s song, you wonder whether the town would now rival Denver for population. But few natives reside in Aspen. As with most small towns, career opportunities lure many youth to other locales, and the high cost of housing eventually drives the others away. All graduates of Aspen High from the last 50 years, plus all who attended for a year or two when their families lived in Aspen, resulted in far fewer Aspen residents than those with delicious memories of having lived here, once upon a time. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn@ schat.net.

WINEINK

WORDS to DRINK BY

A VIRTUAL TRIP TO NEW ZEALAND ’TIS THE SEASON when a sense of wanderlust sets in. As I unfortunately have no reservations for a trip to a welcoming wine community, I pulled out my globe this week with the idea of “virtually” exploring a region I have yet to visit. A spin of the earth slowed to a halt on the far side of the Pacific. As my hand traced a line below the equator, it landed on New Zealand. Specifically the South Island of New Zealand. Lucky for us both as this is a magical land of KELLY J. distinct character, and HAYES even better, one with great wines. New Zealand, with both islands included, is almost exactly the size of Colorado. And yet, the island nation has eight distinct viticulture areas that are currently producing world-class wines. Obviously the coastal influence has much to do with it. But along with geography, geology plays an important role. The islands are relatively young and the alluvial soils that spill from the mountaintops are perfect for growing many varieties of grapes. Greywacke, is the term the Kiwi’s use to describe these sandstone soils that tumble down and wash away in the rains from the alpine mountains that make up the backbone of New Zealand. Marlborough, located on the northernmost tip of the South Island, is New Zealand’s most famous wine region. It is the place that not only put New Zealand on the map for wine lovers, it is home of the Sauvignon Blanc grapes that created a huge stir among the wine media and connoisseurs in the 1980s and ’90s when the wines of Cloudy Bay became a sensation. Cloudy Bay was founded in 1985 by an Australian named David Hohnen, who was the owner of Cape Mentelle winery in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. After trying some “Savvy” left by a visiting winemaker from Marlborough, he was impressed enough to, as the

12

Once known only for its Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand is now turning out Pinot Noir, Malbec and even Cabernet Sauvingon.

Aussies say, “give it a go.” Hohnen bought 40 tons of grapes, enlisted a young winemaker named Kevin Judd and set about changing the course of history for New Zealand wines. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, despite being the largest selling wine in the history of New Zealand, incongruously became a cult classic. Today it is owned by LVMH, the French luxury goods company, and is part of Estates & Wines, the Moët Hennessy Wine Division that also owns Cape Mentelle. In the years following the rush for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand wine regions like Central Otego, Hawkes Bay and Martinborough have thrived. And Pinot Noir, Malbec and even Cabernet Sauvignon have become well-produced varietals. But make no mistake: It is Marlborough and it’s “Savvy’s” that put new Zealand on track to play a role in the world wine market. The harvest has just wrapped in Marlborough. Remember, in the world of wine the tilt of the earth is what determines when it is time to

reap or time to sow. Just as our vines are beginning to pop here in the north, in the south this is the beginning of the fallow time of year. It is fall in New Zealand and ski season is just a month or so away. But as summer is approaching here, this is a great time to open some wines from New Zealand. They are distinctive, crisp and highly acidic making them great sipping wines on a warm day and perfect accompaniments to the foods of summer. And perhaps most important, they can be great buys. Start with the wines that began the trend. The Cloudy Bay 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is loaded with the scent and taste of melons and fresh fruits. It is easy to find and for $30 or so is a great price for a wine that made history. Kevin Judd, the original winemaker at Cloudy Bay, is now making wines under his own label called, appropriately, Greywacke (www. greywacke.com). While hard to find — there were just 1,500 cases imported to the U.S. — his 2011 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc

Marlborough is a beautiful wine and a steal at just more than $20 a bottle. It found a place at No. 53 on Wine Spectator’s 2012 list of the Top 100 wines of the year. Oh, and did I mention that the Marlborough wine region is one of the most beautiful places on all the earth? Perhaps that is why my globe stopped turning there and took me on this virtual journey. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soonto-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and a black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

K.J.’S PICKS Marlborough is also home to some great Pinot Noir as well. Here are three worth trying:

1. Dog Point 2011 Pinot Noir $36 This pair of Cloudy Bay alums are producing some of the region’s most outstanding wines.

2. Nobilo Icon Marlborough Pinot Noir 2011 $20 A great price for a great wine from a long-established Kiwi winemaking family.

FOOD MATTERS

CUISINE À LA MINUTE IF YOU HAVE ONE dish this spring or summer, make it the Santa Barbara Uni Pasta by chef Didier Elena at Chefs Club by Food & Wine. It’s creamy, soft flavors of the sea, combined with fennel, garlic and white wine, mixed with pasta perfection. And this dish is just for starters. What is happening at Chefs Club at the moment is evolving beautifully and most excitingly. AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY After a somewhat shaky start, Chefs Club, located at The St. Regis Resort Aspen, can now be called one of the best restaurants in Aspen, and its new executive chef, Didier Elena, has proven he has talent enough for our town and more. A native of Monaco, Elena spent 20 years working with Alain Ducasse as executive chef of Restaurant Alain Ducasse at The Essex House, New York, and as culinary consultant for the Alain Ducasse Restaurant Group. He has incredible experience, but also incredible point of view and heart and soul in his dishes. This comes through in every bite of the uni pasta. It is his signature dish, and not only appears on the Aspen menu, but it will also be on the Chef Club menus at its two new outposts set to open this year in San Francisco and New York City. “As a child, I spent much of my time fishing with my father and often catching sea urchin,” says Elena. “We would just open them and toss with some spaghetti and garlic and eat it as lunch on the boat. … It will be the same recipe (at all Chefs Club locations) — it is such a classic dish for me. I have served the pasta in Reims, France, and also at Adour at The St. Regis in New York City. I think it translates well because it is so pure and

simple, with the flavor from the sea complemented by the richness of the pasta, fennel and garlic. MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

A FOND FAREWELL TO FILM AT THE WHEELER OPERA HOUSE

ONE OF THE MOST famous moments in Hollywood self-reflection came from Norma Desmond, the faded movie star played by the Oscarnominated Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard.” “I am big. It’s the pictures that got small,” Desmond tells the hack screenwriter Joe Gillis. That was 1950, and in lots of ways, the pictures are still getting smaller 63 years later. Theaters have gone from grand downtown palaces to convenience-size spaces on strips of cheap land. (For a vivid description of this decline, read “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid,” Bill Bryson’s memoir of Des Moines, Iowa — and America — in the 1950s.) Screens have shrunk down to something we can fit in our pocket. And film itself has just about vanished into nothingness. Films these days are not technically films at all usually, but digital information. The advantages of shooting and screening in digital formats are undeniable: the cost to create, transport and store a digital movie is lower. Directors and actors can do multiple takes without having to worry about running out of film stock. Editors can look at what’s been shot almost instantly, rather than needing to wait till the film is processed. But a purist will solemnly swear that much has also been lost in this advance. Digital doesn’t have the richness and depth of film, particularly in the black tones. Digital transfers of old films are not always expertly done. Even the sound of film snaking its way through an old-school projector is part of the traditional movie-watching experience lost on digital audiences. Aspen has such a purist in Jon Busch, who has been programming the Wheeler Opera House’s Film Series going back to the early 1970s. Busch has been not only a programmer, but a projectionist, who takes the art seriously. He is also something of a commentator, dutifully offering viewing tips before screenings at the Wheeler. Busch is about to lose part of that job. The renovation of the Wheeler this coming fall will include a switch

from film projectors to digital, a necessity forced upon theaters by the movie industry. (In fact, the Wheeler counts as a hold-out; most theaters have already gone digital.) But Busch isn’t about to say good-bye to film without giving it a big going-away hug. “Mountains of the Moon,” to be shown Thursday, May 9, belongs in the Hall of Fame of the underrated. Directed and cowritten by Aspenite Bob Rafelson, known for 1960s counter-culture

ALSO ON THE WHEELER FILM SCHEDULE Victorian England. Farewell to Film closes on an almost inevitable note: “Lawrence of Arabia,” which will be shown June 3-6, also from a 70mm print. The 1962 film, by David Lean, is often cited as the sort of film that begs to be seen on the big screen - the bigger, the better. The sweeping views of the Arabian desert, the figure of British Army officer T.E. Lawrence, played by Peter O’Toole, and Maurice Jarre’s score are all best experienced on a

• “The Company We Keep” (Monday through Wednesday, May 6-8): Robert Redford’s film about a former ’60s radical eluding an investigating journalist features a cast of Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie and Redford himself in the starring role — all former Oscar winners — plus past Oscar nominees Stanley Tucci, Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte and Terrence Howard. • “Blancanieves” (May 13-15): This Spanish retelling of the Snow White fairy tale is set around bullfighting in Seville. • “Lore” (May 16-18): A complex family drama set in World War II Germany, “Lore” has earned numerous awards on the festival circuit. • “Renoir” (May 20-22): This romantic drama about the son of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir is set on the post-World War I French Riviera. • “No” (May 23-25): Gael García Bernal stars in this Oscar-nominated Chilean film as an ad executive working on a campaign to defeat dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Maribel Verdi stars in the Spanish film “Blancanieves,” showing May 13-15 in the Wheeler Film Series.

films “Five Easy Pieces” and “Easy Rider,” “Mountains of the Moon” examines a different sort of rebel. The story is about Captain Richard Burton and Lieutenant John Hanning Speke — British explorers in 19th century Britain who were determined to locate the source of the Nile River. The film is at once epic, with gorgeous scenery and costumes (which should come out brilliantly: the screenings are from a 70mm print). But it is also a more intimate portrait of the personalities involved, the tenuous partnership between Burton and Speke, and the difficulties the two face in their determination to discover the Nile headwaters in the name of

grand scale. The film, number five on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest American movies, was certainly made on a huge scale, featuring probably the greatest cast ever: Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif, Anthony Quinn, José Ferrer and Claude Rains, along with O’Toole. Nearly as memorable as seeing “Lawrence of Arabia” on the big screen from a film print should be Busch’s remarks about the film, and about the demise of film itself.

• “On the Road” (May 28-29): Walter Salles, the Brazilian director behind the critically acclaimed 2004 film “The Motorcycle Diaries” is on the move again with this adaptation of Jack Keroauc’s classic novel of restless youth roaming America in search of transcendence.

THE

HELPING HELPERS by DALE STRODE

FOUNDATION HELPS ASPEN SKI PATROLLERS ADVANCE THEIR MEDICAL SKILLS

PROFESSIONAL SKI patrollers, by nature and by job description, are helpers. They help the lost skier from Texas, who’s looking for the Dallas Freeway. They help the double-black dude from Woody Creek, who’s looking for steep and deep (but safe). They help, most of all, those who are injured on the slopes — the daily triage that extends from a snowboarder’s dislocated shoulder to a skier’s justtorn ACL. Or worse.

BUT THREE ASPEN ski patrollers, all professional helpers, experienced a role reversal this year: Someone wanted to help them. The trio, familiar faces on chairlifts at Snowmass and Aspen Highlands, received scholarships to advance their medical training from the Cody St. John Foundation, an organization devoted to helping professional ski patrollers. “The scholarship helped me out a lot,” said Snowmass pro patroller Andy Fisher, who received a grant from the Steamboat Springs-based foundation this year. He used the funds to help pay for his paramedic training at Denver Health Medical Center. “I met Cindy St. John when she came to Snowmass to talk about the foundation and talk about Cody,” Fisher said of Cody’s mother. “She was

super supportive of the ski patrollers.” Cody St. John was an ambitious, outgoing ski patroller at Steamboat Springs, who was known for his passion for skiing and medicine. He was voted the Colorado Ski Country USA Patroller of the Year in 2006, after only three years of patrolling. Planning to extend his medical training, St. John was en route to nursing-school orientation at the University of Wyoming when his car collided with a logging truck. He died in 2007 from injuries suffered in the crash. The St. John family immediately moved to extend the spirit of their favorite son to his professional colleagues. “Since his passing, we established

the Cody St. John Foundation as the only nonprofit organization that is working to benefit professional ski patrollers,” said Corrine St. John, Cody’s sister, who works with the foundation. “By awarding scholarships for continuing medical education, we

selected each year all bring a similar degree of passion and commitment to serving others on their local mountain, as Cody did in Steamboat,” she said. “The need for mountain safety professionals is greater than ever.” Fisher said he was inspired by Cody St. John’s story, and he applied

ASPEN PATROLLERS PROUD TO RAISE THE CODY CUP TAAM, JOHNSON WIN MOUNTAINEERING BENEFIT RACE AT STEAMBOAT Max Taam won mountaineering races all over the ski world this season. He won in Aspen; he won in Breckenridge. He represented the United States at the prestigious World Ski Mountaineering Championships, where he and Aspen teammate John Gaston finished 10th. So, Taam had to win in Steamboat Springs. After all, when you compete against your professional peers — fellow ski patrollers — there’s more than pride at stake. “It’s a cool event, and it’s for such a good cause,” the unassuming Taam said after he won the annual ski mountaineering competition at Steamboat, held as a benefit for the Cody St. John Foundation. The foundation provides scholarships for professional ski patrollers to receive additional medical training. “I first did the race two years ago. I wanted to go back,” Taam said of the popular community event, which features 3,000 vertical feet of climbing and 4,500 of descent. “I liked the extra downhill,” Taam said, with a chuckle. He joined fellow Aspen patroller Brian Johnson, who finished third, to win the prestigious Cody Cup for the Aspen Ski Patrol, awarded to the top patrol duo in the competition. Pride? You think? “We went up there with the intention of winning it,” Taam said, matter-of-factly. But, it wasn’t easy. The event was held before recent heavy snowfalls, when spring conditions reigned supreme at Steamboat Resort, which catches a lot of sun by ski area parameters. “The snow was as rock hard as it gets — bulletproof,” said Taam, who teamed with Gaston to win the annual Power of Four mountaineering race in Aspen this year. “It’s a great cause. Plus, it’s a big community event. It’s a real Steamboat event,” said Taam, a respected ski mountaineer who was warmly received by his colleagues for his winning performance in Steamboat. “The (St. John) family has done a really good job providing extra help for ski patrollers,” Taam said. “Good cause.” The Cody Cup also gave Taam and Johnson a $2,000 check for the Aspen Ski Patrol to use for medical training. That’s more than pride.

Snowmass ski patroller John Perko.

He said he was able to take an accelerated paramedic program in Denver that crammed a year’s curriculum into a six-month, intensive package. “Snowmass-Wildcat (Fire Department) paid for it, too,” Fisher said, adding that he also received assistance from the Snowmass Community Fund and the Aspen Valley Foundation. Fisher works full time at SnowmassWildcat Fire in addition to his ski patrol duties at Snowmass. “It facilitated me going to school,” said John Perko, a colleague of Fisher’s on the Snowmass Ski Patrol and at Snowmass-Wildcat Fire. “I really applaud Cody’s family for recognizing the effort the ski patrollers put forth. We love our jobs, and this really helps,” said Perko, who’s been on the Snowmass patrol for nine years. He said that meeting Cody’s mother and his sister was inspiring and encouraging. “To me, it feels like they recognize the spirit of Cody embodied with other ski patrollers,” said the 35-yearold Perko. Perko was able to earn his paramedic license, which he uses daily on patrol duty and with the fire department. He said that in meeting Cody’s friends and fellow patrollers, he learned about Cody’s spirit and zest for life, especially ski patrolling. “Cody had a saying about patrollers: “We’re the fortunate ones with the good life,’” Perko said after a day on duty — and on skis — at Snowmass. Meanwhile, during a break from nursing school in Denver, Elliott Larson said the Cody St. John

Foundation helped him get from Aspen Highlands to the emergency room at the University of Colorado Hospital. “It helped me be able to afford nursing school,” said Larson, who was on the Highlands patrol when he was accepted into the Denver nursing program. “The Cody St. John Foundation is an excellent way for ski patrolmen to do what I’ve done,” he said of the enhanced medical training to support his patrol work. Larson’s medical interest started with emergency outdoor training and grew as he worked with EMTs. He completed his EMT program, and the professional ski patroller wanted more. “Last spring, I got to attend the Cody Challenge competition in Steamboat,” he said of the mountaineering challenge for Colorado ski patrollers held in Cody St. John’s memory. He met the St. John family and other scholarship winners. “It was neat to see all the patrollers out there in the spirit of sportsmanship, competing in the outdoors, raising funds to help people like me,” said Larson, 38, who plans to move back to ski country when he finishes nursing school at the end of the year. “Hopefully, this will get me back to the mountains,” Larson said just as his pager summoned him back to the ER. “There is no other scholarship that focuses on ski patrollers,” said Fisher, talking by cell phone from the Sheer Bliss chairlift at Snowmass. “It’s cool. I talked to people who had worked with Cody. They said he was

WHO WAS CODY ST. JOHN? SNOWBOARDER QUICK TO EARN RESPECT OF SKI PATROL PEERS

Cody St. John touched lives. He’s still touching lives. ST. JOHN, THE charismatic inspiration behind the Cody St. John Foundation that helps professional ski patrollers enhance their medical training, died in 2007, but he left an unmistakable impression on his former colleagues at Steamboat Resort.

“He was hard-working, but he had fun. That’s the ski patrol right there,” said Pete Lewis, who worked with St. John on the Steamboat Ski Patrol. “He was amazingly positive. And it was totally natural. There was a real positive vibe about him.” His dedication to his work and his genuine outgoing nature combined to create a special individual, Lewis said. He was, after all, a snowboarder in a professional world dominated by skiers. A snowboarder? “Yes, he was a snowboarder. That made him unique in the ski patrol,”

Lewis said. “He was a really solid rider. He had to be to earn the respect of the ski patrol.” St. John was en route to the University of Wyoming for nursingschool orientation when he was fatally injured in an auto accident. The foundation was created to help professional ski patrollers like St. John, who wanted to extend their medical training. He had a special touch when dealing with injured skiers and boarders, Lewis said. “But he was that same way with everyone. He was that way with us. That’s what made him special,” the Steamboat patroller said. “It seemed like he was every man. Everyone loved him. Women — women loved him. He was a woman’s man. “But he was a man’s man, too. He worked, and he worked hard. He was not a pretty boy,” said Lewis, who would dine occasionally at St. John’s home. “He and his roommate would have friends over for chili over rice. Yes, chili over rice. I remember that.” St. John took his dedication to the ski patrol to memorable extremes, his friends said. When he was on duty, St. John always sat as close to the door of the mountain restaurants as possible — ready to answer a call in a second’s notice. And — true this — he never took his ski patrol parka off when he was on a lunch break. Ever ready to help. St. John even bridged the labor gap at Steamboat. “Cody was so unique. He was appreciated by both sides,” Lewis said. “Management loved him, but he was a union rep. A union rep. He just cared so much about making (the resort) the best place it could be.” In three short years, St. John was voted the Colorado Ski Country USA Ski Patroller of the Year. “He was well-rounded, hard-

working, honest,” said Wes Richey, the assistant director of the Steamboat Ski Patrol, who had a hand in hiring St. John. He said a taskmaster of a former food and beverage supervisor recommended St. John for the ski patrol after a winter in a mountain cafeteria. That kind of recommendation was something that never happened, he said. “She said if we didn’t hire him for the patrol, we were crazy,” said Richey, who was rewarded with an ambitious young man who would become the patroller of the year. “I’m lucky we hired him. He had a sly, discreet sense of humor, which I enjoyed,” Richey said. “And the guy was athletic, very athletic.” He said the work of the Cody St. John Foundation since his death has been gratifying for the professional

CODY’S DEDICATION TO HIS WORK AND HIS GENUINE OUTGOING NATURE COMBINED TO CREATE A SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL, FRIEND PETE LEWIS SAID. ski patrol community. A current patroller at Steamboat, he said will use his foundation grant to help pay for medical school at the University of Colorado. “He was a good guy to know.” But Cody St. John touched more than his former colleagues and friends. As an organ donor, he also touched three lives that continue flourish. At the 2012 Cody Cup in Steamboat Springs, the three donor recipients of Cody St. John gathered with the patrollers to celebrate his spirit for life. Michael Brown, who received St. John’s pancreas, celebrated with the family and friends. Robert Page, who received St. John’s liver, joined the festivities. According to Powder Magazine, they were part of the crowd that listened to band Tuft Grooves, who’s lead singer, David Freshman, belted out the lead vocal with the heart of Cody St. John. Literally.

“Panda and Bamboo,” 2001, is part of the exhibition Rob Pruitt: An American Folk Artist, opening Friday, May 3, with an opening reception on June 27.

Belly Up, 450 S. Galena St., Aspen. For his Nonesuch debut, Devendra Banhart chose the title “Mala,” literally the Serbian word for “small” but used colloquially in Eastern Europe as a term of endearment, “like sweetie pie,” Banhart explains. It was a placeholder during most of the recording, a working title offhandedly inspired by a ring his fiancée, the Serbian photographer and artist Ana Kras, had given him with that word on it. But the name stuck, and it proves to be an apt one for an album so intimate in scale and open of heart. Call 970-544-9800. “Alice in Wonderland” 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Carbondale Middle School Theater. BOOK REVIEW

NOTEWORTHY

‘THE ORDINARY TRUTH’ TRADITIONALLY, SPRINGS and wells are centers of life around which people gather and sometimes form communities. In Utah, author Jana Richman’s second novel, “The Ordinary Truth,” metropolitan claims to desert waters unsettle a small town and pit one family’s members against each other. Shifting between the perspectives of several Nevada women, Richman unravels secrets and half-truths — a multigenerational quilt of residents near life’s “sad, hard edges.” The youngest protagonist, Cassie, a webmaster and “reassuring decoy” for shy customers at a Carson City whorehouse, was raised by her ranching grandmother, Nell, who’s been tasked with taming Cassie’s feral nature. But the two women grew close, bonded by their strained relationship with Kate, Cassie’s mother and Nell’s daughter. Kate, emotionally crippled by the

childhood loss of her beloved father in a hunting accident, now works for the Southern Nevada Water Authority in Las Vegas. Her uneasy coexistence with her mother — like two strangers “living in a perpetual elevator” — sours when Kate announces her agency’s plans for a pipeline that will drain Great Basin valleys, depleting the aquifer that waters the family spread ruled by the septuagenarian, no-nonsense Nell. Grandmother and granddaughter form an unlikely yet true-to-life alliance: that of rancher and budding environmentalist. Besides Cassie’s summer job at the brothel — a halfbaked ploy to unite the family in an intervention on her behalf — she attends the program of environmental studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a field suggested by her grandma. “I don’t know what happens when three stubborn women each take up ground

waiting for the others to move,” Cassie admits, “but I aim to find out.” Without taking sides, Richman — a sixth-generation Utahn from the west desert — paints a canvas of longpending and much-dreaded water wars. Laced with cowboy humor and the cadences of rural speech but also referencing big-city skyscrapers, therapy sessions, and The White Stripes, this tale of estrangement encapsulates the discordant New West. Though the setting is modern, the subject is timeless: loyalty to family and to the land — according to Nell, the only two things that really matter in the world. And in Nell’s assessment of this ordinary truth: “A person ought never to have to choose between those two things.”
