THEATER THE HUDSON REED ENSEMBLE will be back in Galena Plaza starting Aug. 19 with a production of William Shakespeare’s comedy “As You Like It.” The play will mark the 10th anniversary of the nonprofit’s Shakespeare in the Park series, and the company’s return to the park after a twosummer absence. “As You Like It” will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m.. The city of Aspen has been redeveloping the park that the theater company has long called its summer home, which has kept the theater troupe out of its summer home since the 2013 production of “Romeo and Juliet.” Hudson Reed is coming off of a strong run of (indoors) productions, including runs of “The Turn of the Screw” and “Bus Stop.” “We’re trying to elevate,” company director Kent Reed said this spring while casting “As You Like It.” The free summer series condenses Shakespeare’s works into under 90 minutes, and Reed has earned a reputation for making some bold artistic choices with their presentation. Hudson Reed’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” for instance, was set in the Wild West, and its “Twelfth Night” featured tapdancing and songs from the Roaring ’20s. No tickets are necessary for the performances. More information at www.hudsonreedensemble.org. Pick up the weekend section of The Aspen Times on Friday, Aug. 19 for more on the Hudson Reed production of “As You Like It.”

1982 ASPEN

“MILL ST. STATION FALLS PREY TO PROGRESS,” declared The Aspen Times on April 8, 1982. “The Mill St. Station, for the past eight years a funky mélange of shops and stores, came tumbling down Monday morning as a handful of spectators littered the street to witness its last rites. The 35-year-old Aspen landmark was quickly and unceremoniously dispatched to make way for a multi-million-dollar complex that will be home for up to 30 shops by sometime next winter. Although the Mill St. Station developed more than a degree of character through the course of time, it was hardly a match for the hydraulic (maybe pneumatic) bite of heavy equipment. In a matter of minutes on Monday, walls fell, window panes popped and the front façade, an admirable piece of work, was split in half and ripped back onto the pile of debris. Viewing the building’s departure was Tom Sardy, the man who had built it back in 1947 or ’48 (he’s not sure). Sardy was a little dumbfounded at the efficiency of the demolition work. ‘It took a hell of lot longer to put it up,’ he said. The building first served as headquarters for his lumber yard which was later relocated to the Airport Business Center. Following that, it was vacant for a number of years with the exception of Sardy’s office. In 1974, the building was renovated and redesigned and became the Mill St. Station.” This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org.

GEAR of the WEEK

WEAR IT: POLARTEC ‘DELTA’ COOLING FABRIC

A WATER-SOAKED COTTON T-SHIRT has long served runners looking to cheat the heat. Moisture and moving air creates a cooling effect, with wet shirt fabric a stand-in for sweat on naked skin. But clinging cotton is far from comfortable, and hot-weather exercisers more often default to polyester, nylon and synthetics touted to wick sweat as you bike or run. As a new option this year, Polartec LLC launched a fabric called Delta. It’s advertised to “cool you down in the hottest conditions” via a tangle of fibers that hold water yet let the fabric breathe.

F

Polartec is known mostly for its fleece and cold-weather apparel. Delta is the company’s first warm-weather play. I tested it for a month in heat up to 100 degrees. The material, which soon debuts in shirts from multiple brands, is knit with a raised texture designed to manage heat. Unlike treated or chemical-based cooling shirts, which can feel cold to the touch, the Delta effect is more than skin deep. The company calls it “metabolic cooling” versus the “sensory cooling” offered by many brands using a treatment that feels cold when wet. With Delta, no chemical treatments are used. Polartec instead knits together hydrophobic and hydrophilic fibers, the contrasting result dispersing moisture, increasing airflow and (unlike wet cotton) reducing friction against the skin when you move. In my review, where I biked and ran in Delta shirts, sweat soaked into the fabric,

allowing for noticeable cooling. It was especially prevalent on a bike, where stronger air movement perpetuates the effect. While running, the technology was not as obvious. But the shirt remained comfortable even when soaked through with sweat, its raised texture never clinging. I’ve long been a proponent of the “run wet” philosophy in summer. With Delta, Polartec gives an option for anyone in need of an edge in hot temps. Look to brands including Outdoor Research, Westcomb, Kitsbow and Velocio to adopt Delta this year. The fabric is no panacea in the heat. But give the material a try this summer on the hottest days. You may never run “dry” again. Stephen Regenold is founder and editor of www.gearjunkie.com.

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

WINEINK

WE’RE BAREFOOTIN’

THE WINE FOLKS DRINK THE MOST ONE PROBLEM WITH WINE WRITERS, yours truly included, is that too often they write for themselves instead of the readers. That is to say the vast majority of wine stories are about wines, or winemakers, who appeal to the tastes and sensibilities of the writer. Now, on the surface there is nothing wrong with that. We write about what we like to drink KELLY J. HAYES and hope to encourage readers to try those wines as well. But sometimes, my colleagues and I get a little too “inside baseball,” recommending obscure wines made with obscure grapes from obscure regions. Sometimes you can’t even find the wines. But beyond that, we often ignore the wines that people are actually drinking. The more popular the wine, the less likely we are to write about it. AMERICA’S BEST-SELLING WINE

So what is the best selling wine in America? You may be surprised to learn that it is the Barefoot Wine & Bubbly brand of wines made by E. & J. Gallo Winery. According to Wines & Vines, an industry publication, which cited an IRI report, Barefoot sold $665 million worth of wine in a 52-week period. That is an astounding figure for a wine that sells for an average price of around $5.60 a bottle. Not only that, the Barefoot wines are so far ahead of the second highest selling wine that there is not even a foot race. (Sorry, I had to.) Sutter Home, which is owned by Trinchero Family Estates, comes in second with sales for the period of just over $358 million. So when was the last time you read a wine story about Barefoot Wines? I kind of think it is a little bit like film critics who love to watch, write and review the small movies that play Thursday afternoon at the Tribeca Film Festival rather than the latest Captain America film. But still, it is

12

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

the Captain America franchise that draws the folks in. THE BAREFOOT STORY

Not only does Gallo sell a ton of Barefoot wines, but the story about the origin and growth of Barefoot is fascinating as well. It all began in 1965 with a Berkeley, California, based, selftaught, home winemaker named Davis Bynum, who made jug wines in his garage under the Barefoot Bynum label. Cheap and sweet, it was named for the image of bare feet crushing grapes. Bynum went on to become a significant winemaker, making the first of the Russian River Pinot Noirs that would become darlings of wine writers to this day and some of the best wines to be made in Sonoma, California. His first pinots from the now iconic Rochioli vineyard, made in 1973, were seminal wines in the discovery of a grape and a region that are perfectly matched for each other. In 1986, Bynum sold the brand to Michael Houlihan who, with business partner Bonnie Harvey, began to bootstrap what was then just a fledgling brand. Without much cash or wine industry experience, but with a seriously entrepreneurial spirit, the pair rebranded the wine as Barefoot Cellars and created the now ubiquitous Barefoot label. Focusing on making wine for customers who wanted something that was not fussy, was affordable and quaffable, Barefoot began using what they termed Worthy Cause Marketing. Working with nonprofits they believed in, the company built the brand by offering wines for events and relying on the word of mouth that came from actually getting wines into the glasses of consumers. But the real key was listening to wine drinkers, not wine connoisseurs. People in the marketplace were craving wines that were easy to drink and did not require a review of the AVA, the source of the grapes or a discussion

Aug u st 18 - Aug u st 2 4, 20 16

about the methods used to make it. The brand grew so much that in 2005 it was sold to Gallo, which has overseen the exponential growth of Barefoot. Houlihan and Harvey wrote a book in 2013 about their experience, called “The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle, and Heart Built America’s #1 Wine Brand,” that became a New York Times best seller. It is as much a business book as it is a wine book. Today, there are 33 different types of Barefoot Wine and Bubbly

products, ranging from a California Cabernet Sauvignon to an Italian Prosecco to a recent release of canned summer spritzers under the Refresh label. And you know what? People love them. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE BAREFOOT CALIFORNIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON While I have not tasted, say 30 of the 33 different wines made by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, I have tasted their California Cabernet Sauvignon, California Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. And for the price and purpose, they all three work. The goal of these wines is not to change your life, but to give you something to sip with friends around a BBQ. The wine is easy to drink, light on tannins and big on fruit. Bottom line? Give it a try.

SUMMER SENSATION: MEXICAN GRILLED CORN

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER than an ear of simply steamed or grilled fresh corn in the late summer. Except for this Mexican Grilled Corn. A bold statement? Well, I’m not planning to give up on plain old corn on the cob any time soon. But I am planning, for the remaining corn months of the year (that’s a real thing, you know, the corn months), to alternate unadorned cooked ears of corn with these embellished ears from day to day, week to week, until the air gets nippy and the leaves turn orange and drop from the trees. And then I will just think about fresh corn for the next 10 months. But first, Mexican Grilled Corn, known as elotes. In Mexico, you can buy this from street vendors in the same way you can get a hot dog or soft pretzel in New York City. The ears of corn are grilled, slathered with a spicy, creamy, cheese mayonnaise mixture, and sprinkled with a bit more cheese. If you can find Mexican crema, use that instead of the sour cream listed in the recipe. If you can’t find cotija (a dry, crumbly, Mexican cow’s milk cheese), use a combination of feta and Parmesan. If you can’t find pure ancho chili powder, it’s OK to use a chili powder blend. And if you don’t have smoked paprika, skip it, or give the corn a final sprinkle of chili powder or regular paprika. Be resourceful; you don’t want to miss out on this summer joy. Add minced fresh cilantro to the mix if cilantro is your thing. Notice there is no salt or pepper; the cheese and chili powder provide enough

MAKE IT 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 3 tablespoons sour cream or Mexican crema 1/4 cup cotija cheese, divided 1 teaspoon finely minced garlic 1 teaspoon ancho or chipotle chili powder 8 ears shucked corn 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter 1 lime, halved Smoked paprika (optional) and additional lime wedges to garnish Preheat the grill to medium high. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, 3 tablespoons of the cheese, garlic and chili powder. Transfer the mixture to a plate, and spread it out a bit. Brush the corn with the melted butter. Grill the corn for 8 minutes, until it is nicely browned in spots. Roll the corn in the mayo mixture and place on a serving platter. Squeeze the lime over the corn, sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of cheese, then sprinkle with smoked paprika, if desired. Add the lime wedges and serve immediately.

GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JENNIFER KAY for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

THE CAIPIRINHA It’s tempting to call cachaça a Brazilian rum and think of the caipirinha as another muddled tropical cocktail. The Olympics in Rio de Janeiro may change that. Brazil’s national cocktail and unique distillation of sugarcane juice into a clear liquor are poised for the kind of worldwide exposure enjoyed by tequila after the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and Australian wines after the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. “We Americans love to consume the Olympics and ‘travel’ there without going there by drinking and eating and celebrating the culture of whatever the host country is, so I think a lot of people are going to be watching the Olympic Games with a caipirinha in their hands,” Leblon Cachaça President and CEO Steve Luttmann said. And while the caipirinha’s sweet, tropical flavors may resemble a mojito, it’s closer in spirit to a margarita. As the caipirinha has gained popularity in many bars, particularly those that hosted viewing parties for Brazil’s World Cup

MAKE IT

two years ago, some bartenders now mix variations of the cocktail with vodka or sake and add strawberries, oranges or other fruits.

Elk Camp Restaurant, located mid-mountain at Snowmass, is serving up a Rasberry Caipirinha this summer. Sipping one on the deck is the perfect apres-bike or apres-hike refresher.

But a true caipirinha — cachaça mixed with limes and ice — seems light but requires precision when mixing, said Rafaella Demelo, a Brazilian native and bartender at Bulla Gastrobar, a Spanish bar and restaurant in Coral Gables, Florida. “It’s a very simple drink,

1/2 lime, cut into thirds 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 2 ounces cachaca (Brazilian rum) 3 raspberries, plus more for garnish

but it’s very hard to get it right. Not only do you have to know the amount of liquor to put in it but also the amount of limes to put in it, and the sugar as well,” she said while mixing a caipirinha.

In a rocks glass, squeeze and drop the lime wedges into the glass. Add the sugar and raspberries and muddle together. Pour in the cachaca and add ice to fill and top off with soda. Garnish with a few raspberries.

I don’t care if it gets stuck in your teeth, just make sure to pack some floss. 18 shows at the Belly Up Aspen that are currently scheduled.

The Mill

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

or years, Aspen has been defined by its neighborhoods: Red Mountain, the West End, Starwood, Mountain Valley, the downtown core, Hunter Creek and more. Like a jigsaw puzzle that pieces together the town’s storied history, these areas seemingly tell the tale of our resort town. But beyond the Victorian homes, McMansions, employee-housing enclaves and the like stand pockets of development that speak to the new Aspen. A place where businesses, visitors, homeowners (both local worker bees and part-timers), and others can co-exist in buildings that have an eye to the future but respect the town’s history. The Mill is a prime example of this new way of thinking; it is, in a nutshell, Aspen redefined.

THE TEAM When Michael Rudin set out to redefine the once non-descript corner behind the majestic Hotel Jerome, he knew he had his work cut out for him. But this forward-thinking developer also knew he had the team, the talent and the tenacity to succeed. “A little background … I developed the Spring Building and I was very happy with how that project turned out,” says Rudin of the mixed-use hub on Aspen’s eastern edge. “So when the Jerome Professional Building became available, I assembled the same team to create something along the same lines — something that fit within the context of Aspen, incorporating the town’s history with a contemporary, modern feel.” Collaborating with locally based David Johnston Architects, Connect One Design, TRU Real Estate, Method Planning & Development and Falcone Construction Management, among others, Rudin set out to create a development that met myriad needs. The end result? One building that houses four free-market pied-a-terre apartments, four employee-housing units, 10,000 square feet of commercial space, underground parking and storage. “The people that work there and visit those businesses, and the people that live in the building — whether it be a full-time affordable-housing resident or a part-time penthouse owner — will find that this building functions seamlessly. And that was our goal,” says Brian Beazley, of Brian Johnston Architects. “Every aspect of this project was well thought out, with the idea of creating something above and beyond your standard Aspen development.” Perhaps the crown jewel of The Mill are two penthouses, each of which feature three bedrooms and three bathrooms spread over 2,000 square feet and include outdoor living areas totaling 1,300 square feet. In addition, an owner amenity package through the Hotel Jerome includes such luxuries as

concierge, grocery and housekeeping services, ski concierge, transportation and access to the Hotel Jerome pool and gym, spa access, as well as inroom dining service and other benefits. But these upscale residences do not define The Mill. In fact, they are simply icing on the cake of this unique project, according to the team that made it a reality. “What I look for when I develop a property is something that is sustainable; something that stands out from the ordinary and can transform an area,” says Rudin, whose roots lie in New York City real estate and development. “I think The Mill is just this kind of project.”

THE VISION Located a block north of what many consider

to be Aspen’s downtown core, The Mill is actually ground zero for a burgeoning part of the Aspen scene. With the Hotel Jerome just across the street, and flanked by the charming West End neighborhood, Rio Grande Park and newly renovated Pitkin County Library, this part of the Mill Street corridor is no longer “the other side of the tracks.” In fact, some see it as the future of Aspen. “It is just one step off of the true downtown core, if the edge of town is Main Street and North Mill Street is a different ‘neighborhood,’” says Beazley. “So we see The Mill as becoming a cornerstone of this neighborhood.” Rudin agrees: “Today, this area is not what you would consider a downtown hub; an area with foot traffic. But I think, over time, it will become just that — and more.

LEFT: The Mill’s development team: Wheeler Clancy, Colin Frank, David Johnston, Chris Striefel, Brian Beazley, Adam Roy, Michael Rudin, Joe Falcone and Gyles Thornley. ABOVE AND BELOW LEFT: Apartments at The Mill feature high-end finishes including natural stone surfaces in their spacious bathrooms and kitchens. BELOW CENTER AND RIGHT: Rooftop gardens create an environmentally sound and aesthetically pleasing living ceiling.

“This corridor has all the elements you need for longterm viability, so I am confident it was the right time and the right place to develop a building like The Mill.” Gyles Thornley, whose Connect One Design was charged with the building’s landscape design aspects, points out subtle — and not-so-subtle — changes already taking place near The Mill. “That corner, with the old building, was really a barrier; a place you walked straight past,” he says. “Now, look at the graded benches, the set-back building, the landscaping ... these are engaging components; they invite you to interact with your surroundings. It’s an exemplary building for those who work and live there, and for people just walking by, to experience.”

THE BULDING Indeed, The Mill building itself speaks to redefining Aspen developments as it carefully blends Aspen’s notable history with its promising future. According to the development team, “it offers a nod to the Victorian era, with the south and east-facing facades complementing the adjacent Hotel Jerome in brickwork and sandstone with contemporary detailing, while the north and west façades of the building reflect a more contemporary style, with floor-to-ceiling windows and retractable glass doors at the penthouse level.” And then there are the sustainable tecnologies employed in The Mill’s construction. According to Rudin, sustainability has become a primary focus of Rudin West Development projects. For example, The Mill is home to a 3,100-square-foot green roof, the largest in Aspen, comprised of native shrubs and plants. In addition to a more natural surrounding and privacy, the green roof simultaneously harvests rainwater while also creating a natural transition between outdoor living spaces and the roof “With some developers you have to twist their arm to see the benefits of these technologies,” says Thornley, who also created Spring Building’s green roof among others in town. “But with this team, it’s an unspoken truth that doing this type of work is the only way to go ... it’s environmentally correct, sustainable and beneficial to all — not to mention it’s aesthetically pleasing.”

THE FUTURE All of these pieces of the puzzle — the team, the vision, the building — point to a well-designed future for The Mill and other projects in the pipeline.

“The team that’s been created here has really great chemistry,” says Beazley. “The developer has a vision and a mindset that we all embrace. It’s not just a cash-grab. This is something that really makes sense and will be here for the long-term; it’s really ingrained in what the community wants and needs.” Thornley agrees. “You look back, and like any project there were struggles. But this is a building we can be proud of; that Aspen can be proud of.” And this, says Rudin, is the foundation of his development philosophy.

“Obviously you can’t always choose exactly where to create a development, but when you find a special place and take the time to consider what should be there — what will thrive there, now and in the future — you can make a dream become a reality. “In the Spring Building and now The Mill, I think we’ve done this. I think, over time, these will become a the standard for development in Aspen.” jmcgovern@aspentimes.com

ARTCRUSH 2016

MAY SELBY

THE ASPEN ART MUSEUM’S major fundraising gala took on a carnival theme this year, designed by STONEFOX architects, featuring a Ferris wheel, big top tent and burlesque performers. Upon arrival at ArtCrush, guests moved through turnstiles to enter the tents, festooned with bright lights, billowy fabrics, stages, a spiral-styled step and repeat, and feathercostumed entertainers. The whimsical evening began with

an opening reception as guests enjoyed fine wines selected and served by Master Sommelier Jay Fletcher and a team of Aspen’s top somms, appetizers from ASC Catering, and perusing the bevy of artwork in the silent auction. When seated for dinner under the big top, event chair Amy Phelan welcomed all, followed by AAM CEO and Director Heidi Zuckerman who presented contemporary artist Gabriel Orozco with the 2016 Aspen

Award for Art. Sotheby’s Oliver Barker commandeered the live auction, which played an integral part in the evening’s success, raising more than $2 million in all for the museum that night to support the non-profit’s operations, education programs, and more. For more information or to become a member of AAM, visit www.aspenartmuseum.org. Contact May with insights, invites or info: allthewaymaymay@hotmail.com

VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | BUCHAREST

by ALISON MUTLER for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEST OF BUCHAREST

ECLECTIC ARCHITECTURE, PALACE OF SPRING AND MORE BUCHAREST WAS ONCE KNOWN AS “Little Paris of the East.” But English, not French, is the preferred foreign language in Romania’s capital city, and 96 percent of its inhabitants are native Romanians. Bucharest buzzes with an energetic, round-the-clock vibe. The city also features an eclectic mix of architecture — from Oriental Byzantine to French neoclassical to communist-era apartment buildings — reflecting a variety of cultural influences across decades and even centuries. WHAT’S NEW

Some new attractions await visitors, while facelifts make a few familiar places worth a return visit. The Palace of Spring, the official family residence of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, opened its gilded doors to the public in March. It was the Ceausescu family home until 1989, when he was ousted from power and executed. Richard Nixon, the late U.S. president, once dined there. The glitzy decor includes a bathroom decked out in gold, mosaics in the swimming pool and a movie theater where the walls are upholstered with plump gold cushions. A pair of peacocks roams the garden. Ceausescu’s pants, his wife Elena’s shoes and an old blackand-white TV are all on display. Tours cost 15 lei to 45 lei ($3.68 to $11).

The “Wings” monument, dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of victims of communism, was unveiled in May in front of Bucharest’s House of the Free Press, a Soviet-inspired building where a statue of Lenin once stood. It is 30 meters (98 feet) high, an intricate web of concrete wings. Though it’s clunky rather than graceful, it is a massive concrete reminder of the political detainees who were held in communist prisons or deported and persecuted. Romanians love the arts, particularly theater. The National Theater underwent $82.5 million four-year revamp; its original facade, covered with arches, now has a distinctly Le Corbusier look to it, with large, smooth curved forms. The National Opera also has undergone considerable refurbishment, although headlines about the opera have been dominated not by the new wallpaper and foyer but by a row between Romanian management and Danish choreographer Johan Kobborg and his partner English National Ballet principal dancer

ABOVE Members of parliament attend a session at the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, Romania. Bucharest, a city of more than 2 million, the farthest east capital in the European Union, once known as the “Little Paris,” buzzes with an energetic, round-the-clock vibe and has an eclectic mixture of architecture from Oriental Byzantine to French Neoclassical to communist-era apartment buildings.

Alina Cojocaru. Opera tickets start from about 25 lei to as much as 150 lei ($6.2 to $37). CLASSIC ATTRACTIONS

Ceausescu’s giant palace in the south of the capital, the world’s second-largest administrative building after the Pentagon, is a must-see. It houses the Parliament, and important conferences are held there. In December, shepherds angry with government policy almost managed to storm the building. It’s a 1.9-mile walk around the building and a large Orthodox cathedral, the Salvation of the People, is being built on its grounds, a cause for some controversy. Other essentials include Revolution Square, the National Art Museum (housed in an old royal palace), the 19th-century Atheneum concert hall and the old Communist Party headquarters. Ceausescu and his wife Elena fled from the roof of that building in a helicopter in December 1989 to get away from the booing crowd. It was their last public appearance.

TIPS

Take a Bucharest City Tour sightseeing bus for 25 lei ($6.20). With 14 stops on the route, you can hop on and off as often as you want within 24 hours. For the more energetic, there are bicycle rentals and bike lanes on some boulevards. There are hardly any hills (Bucharest is a mere 230 feet above sea level) but drivers can be aggressive. Otherwise, ubiquitous yellow Dacia taxis are cheap and zippy, costing 1.4 lei (35 cents) a kilometer. A subway ride is a surefire way to avoid heavy traffic, with two rides costing 5 lei ($1.23 ). In June, the national airport company took the welcome decision to cap taxi fares. Authorized taxis will charge a maximum of 1.4 lei a kilometer (0.6 miles) from the Henri Coanda Airport in an effort to stop legendary rip-offs. A ride into Bucharest should cost about 35 lei ($8.60). Shopping is a favorite pastime, and many shops are open until 10 p.m., with some 24/7 convenience stores too. Exchange bureaus are generally reliable and don’t charge commission. Smoking was banned in indoor venues in March. HANGING OUT

Centrul Vechi or Old City is very popular, a maze of bars, clubs, restaurants, shops and the 16th century Old Princely Court Church, clustered on a few streets close to the imposing National Bank of Romania. For those in search of peace and quiet, Bucharest’s fabled parks have a lot to offer. There is the elegant 19th-century Cismigiu Gardens, where you can watch locals play chess and backgammon or take a stroll. Farther north, there is the fashionable and sprawling Herestrau park next to the ethnographic Village Museum, featuring different styles of rural houses. You won’t be able to visit the royal Elizabeth Palace next door, but the small Botanical Gardens in Cotroceni district are worth a visit, or if you want to get to know the “real” Bucharest, head south to the splendid IOR park, by getting off at Titan subway station or taking the 330 or 335 bus. LEFT, TOP People walk by the National Bank of Romania in the old part of Bucharest, Romania. LEFT Romanian Orthodox nuns wait outside the Stavropoleos church, built in 1724, in Bucharest, Romania.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

by ANDREW TRAVERS

HERBERT BAYER IN MINIATURE WALKING AROUND THE NEW HERBERT BAYER EXHIBITION at the Aspen Institute’s Paepcke Gallery, one imagines the Bauhaus great and Aspen icon at work in his Red Mountain studio — crunching numbers, studying a color wheel and cutting paperboard pieces. The new show, “Maquettes and Sculptures,” collects eight of Bayer’s miniature handmade models for his sculptures alongside three posthumously realized ones. It offers a tantalizing look at Bayer’s process. The wood, paperboard and metal maquettes are small versions of what the artist imagined to be monumental installation pieces. He made more than 50 maquettes during his life, many of which are permanently displayed in a wood chest at Peyton Wright Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. and are now on loan to the institute. There are untitled maquettes of intersecting shapes and a wood-andsteel miniature of his 1963 “Memorial Sculpture” honoring Walter Paepcke, along with undulating and articulated walls. “They’re playful pieces that he envisioned being enlarged on a greater scale,” says Aspen Institute art registrar Lissa Balinger. “But there were many, many maquettes he made there were never made on a larger scale. Actually, during his lifetime very few were.” The three sculptures in the show were made — using Bayer’s specifications and with the blessing of his family — by the Peyton Wright Gallery. Among them is a tabletop-sized version of his wooden “Aspen Column,” a full-sized version of which is installed on the lawn of a private home east of Aspen. Fabricated in the 1960s and 1970s, the maquettes are contemporaneous with Bayer’s “Chromatic” series. Like those works, they are concerned with geometry, symmetry and vibrant coloring. “They’re so interesting because they’re these perfect little objects,” says Ballinger. “I have these great visions of him playing with paper board.” Among them is his wood and acrylic maquette for “Articulated wall

for 1968 Olympics.” The full-sized 54-foot highway sculpture still stands in Mexico City, where it was installed outside the Olympic Village. A similar 85-foot-tall canary yellow highway sculpture also is still standing beside Interstate 25 in Denver. The Paepcke Gallery show includes a poster commemorating its dedication in June 1985, showing the progress of its installation. Layers of concrete were stacked on top of one another — a long steel rod running through the centers of them. Between the bright yellow and the piece-by-piece assembly, it looks like a super-sized Lego project. With the interstate highway system still young in the ‘60s, Bayer saw the roadside and the tedium of long drives as an exciting new canvas for artists. As Bayer himself put it: “Sculptural treatment towards beautification of the highway is a task for the contemporary artist and a necessity. … Visual interest of sculptures placed in such areas would also ease the driving and would, on long monotonous stretches, help to keep the driver alert.” One can’t help but imagine how Bayer would react to today’s increasingly distracted driving environment, with PSAs warning against the dangers of texting behind the wheel and local authorities placing signs on Highway 82 warning motorists not to play “Pokemon Go” on the road. “I always wonder what he would think about texting and driving and whether this would help at all,” says Ballinger. The exhibition also includes a metal model of an alternate version of Bayer’s “Kaleidoscreen,” a full-sized version of which has been on the Institute campus since 1957. Beside the maquette are two Ferenc Berko photos of “Kaleidoscreen” in its original placement beside the campus pool (it is currently outside of the Aspen Meadows reception center). In keeping with the Bauhaus ideal of functionality, its screen panels are adjustable and were originally meant to give sunbathers the ability to

shade themselves poolside. “Maquettes and Sculptures,” which follows a yearlong exhibition of Bayer’s tapestries, continues the Institute’s investigation and display of lesser-known aspects of Bayer’s artistic career. Since 2014, the Institute has focused exclusively on collecting buyer — not accepting gifts or loans

of work by other artists, focusing the nonprofit’s Paepcke and Resnick galleries solely on preserving and studying Bayer’s expansive oeuvre. The show will remain in the Paepcke Gallery through August 2017. atravers@aspentimes.com

Divided into sections that mirror school subjects, Rosenthal analyzes topics such as art, music, math, science and history to take the reader on a journey. In the social studies unit, Rosenthal considers why we never see chubby symphony conductors. She shares stories from famous poets in the
