CLASSICAL MUSIC ARMED WITH A VIOLIN and impassioned musical curiosity, violinist Jennifer Koh is forging an artistic path of her own devising. Her recital program, titled “Bach and Beyond, Part 3,” comprises Bach’s Sonatas for Unaccompanied Violin Nos. 2 and 3, Berio’s Sequenza VIII and John Zorn’s Passagen. All are virtuosic works. “Jenny Koh’s recital will be a veritable Bach sandwich aimed to please both the admirers of Bach and of composers ‘beyond,’” says Asadour Santourian, vice president of artist administration and artistic advisor of the Aspen Music Festival and School. Since the 1994-95 season when she won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Concert Artists Guild Competition and the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Koh has been committed to exploring connections in all the works she performs, from past to present, searching for similarities of voice among diverse composers and associations within the works of a single composer. Her exploration of Bach’s music and its influence in today’s musical landscape has played an important role in Koh’s artistic journey. In 2009, she introduced the “Bach and Beyond” series, now three recitals, that investigate the history of the solo violin repertoire from Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin to modern-day composers, including newly commissioned works. “It’s 325 years, in 2010, from the date of his birth, and yet for me they’re still incredible profound works,” said Koh in a recent interview at the prestigious conservatory Oberlin. “And when you look throughout history, it’s almost impossible to look at solo violin works without referencing back to Bach.” Koh’s recital is Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Harris Concert Hall. Tickets are $35. To purchase, call 970-925-9042 or visit www. aspenmusicfestival.com.

Carbondale-based Thunder River Theatre Company’s rendition of “All My Sons” opens Friday, Feb. 28.

THEATER “Salinger” shows this week as part of the Monday Docs Series at the Wheeler Opera House.

FEATURING INTERVIEWS WITH 150 SUBJECTS including Salinger’s friends and colleagues who have never spoken on the record before as well as film footage, photographs and other material that have never been seen, Shane Salerno’s 22-year labor of love and awe is the closest anyone has ever come to capturing the most elusive figure in American fiction. This is the first work to get behind The Catcher In the Rye author’s childhood, private world, and the secrets he left after his death in 2010. “Salinger” screens Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 at the Wheeler Opera House as part of the Monday Docs Series, presented by the Wheeler and Aspen Film.

BACK WHEN ARTHUR MILLER’S “ALL MY SONS” premiered, the play spoke to a nation emerging from war and eyeing prosperity while still shaking off the memory of economic depression. The country is now heading more or less in the same direction six decades later, and the reality of the times in the play still remains current. Thunder River Theatre Company is proud to bring this brilliant drama to life. “All My Sons” is being directed and designed by TRTC’s Executive Artistic Director Lon Winston. The cast features Kent Reed and Valerie Haugen as Joe and Kate Keller, David Pulliam as Chris Keller, Sarah Dale Payne as Ann Deever, and Corey Simpson as George Deever. The show opens Friday, Feb. 28, and runs March 1, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 (preview Feb. 27). Tickets are $22 for adults, $12 for students at www.thunderrivertheatre.com.

Forget the baby steps, and make the leap

THE CASTLE CREEK SANCTUARY 4 bedroom / 4.5 bathroom 10,536 sq ft residence over 14 secluded acres

BABY STEPS. That’s how the federal government is approaching the growing national support for legalizing marijuana as a consumer product. On Feb. 14, the feds laid out what the Associated Press termed a “road map” for banks considering whether to do business with pot shops that are legal under new laws in the states of Colorado and Washington, and may soon be legal in Alaska and probably other states as well. The idea, according to the AP, is to give bankers a level of comfort with the idea of doing business with pot shops that are operating against federal law, but within the laws of the states where they operate. Apparently the nation’s bankers, quite possibly the most conservative industry going, have replied that the new guidelines are not enough for them to feel comfortable jumping on the legalization bandwagon. Hardly surprising, of course. For those who have been living under rocks for the past couple of years, voters in Colorado and Washington in 2012 made it legal for shops to sell, and adult consumers to possess and use, certain amounts and types of pot, whether in smokeable or other forms. And according to a Feb. 4 story in the Anchorage Daily News, a pro-marijuana group in Alaska has submitted the required number of signatures to get a recreational pot question on a ballot in August. A brief survey of Internet websites shows that 20 states and the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) have legalized pot (along with cultivation and sales) for medical uses and that another 13 states have pending or proposed laws along the same lines. On the somewhat rosy assumption that voters in all 13 of those “pending or proposed” states decide in favor of legalizing medical marijuana, that would make it 34 states that permit people to use pot as a medicine, at the least. Looked at another way, that would mean that only 16 states have not voted in favor of pot legalization in some form. In national terms, it would mean that voters in at least two thirds of

the states have decided the long-standing war on pot has been a waste of lives, money and time. And, interestingly enough, that is the same percentage (two thirds) of votes required in the two houses of Congress, and among the states, to amend the U.S. Constitution. What we have here is a classic example of a hidebound federal bureaucracy determined to ignore the will of a majority of voters on an issue that, while controversial, certainly does not represent a threat to the future of our Republic. Part of the problem, of course, is the fact that far too many of the policy makers in this country still believe the lies put out by the federal government for more than 80 years, concerning the hazards involved in smoking or otherwise consuming pot. Those lies, as can be seen by even a cursory review of the literature, have come from the very people charged with creating and then enforcing the anti-marijuana juggernaut now represented by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Add to that the numerous state and local task forces whose budgets and very existence depend on the continued public belief in those same lies. Seems kind of bass-ackwards to me. Kind of like allowing the gun culture to write the laws about who can own military-style weaponry, or letting the automobile, oil and rubber tire industry shape our national policies about mass transportation systems. Oh, wait, we’ve done both of those, too. Do you see a pattern here? I think it’s inevitable that the states will decide against the war on pot, against the incarceration of hundreds of thousands of people over what should be a matter of personal choice. What will the feds do then? Hard to predict, but you can bet that ignorance will the foundation of any resistance, and baby steps will continue to be the order of the day.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Neon signs for lodges like the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) lit up Aspen buildings in the 1950s.

NEON NOSTALGIA If you remove its unforgettable mountainscape, Aspen would be barely recognizable to someone who hasn’t been there for a while. Familiar houses and buildings have been torn down and replaced, businesses change names and locations annually, and even Victorian landmarks like the Jerome and the Wheeler have expanded. Constant change has become one of Aspen’s identifying elements.

The Aspen of my 1950s childhood differs from contemporary Aspen to such an extent it is hard to explain to a newcomer just what it was like. But you can envision it if you travel the back roads of western states. There are towns off the interstate that have no modern construction, where the downtown core hasn’t changed since the ’50s. In those towns, only old brick buildings with big picture windows line Main Street. Irregular sidewalks crack and heave above the roots of trees. Abandoned cars decompose in empty lots. Small houses with sagging porches could use some paint. Businesses such as Joe’s Bar and Johnson’s Hardware, run by subsequent generations of a family, retain their names. Nothing says “1950s” like neon signs.

12

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

When you drive through one of those forever-’50s towns at night, neon signs reveal the town’s history as well as its present. Neon advertises the location of those fraternal orders that still have enough members to be in existence; “vacancy” or “open” signs distinguish

signs. As window trucks hold glass strapped to an A-frame on the bed, the neon delivery truck dangled its signs from an A-frame. They are as fragile as they appear; the glass tubes break easily, especially when they are being made. Each sign is a work of art that

NEON IN ASPEN WAS ESPECIALLY INTRIGUING IN THE WINTER; FLUORESCENT COLORS STOOD OUT AGAINST THE WHITE SNOW WHEN SEEN FROM BLOCKS AWAY. SOMETIMES SNOW PARTIALLY COVERED THE SIGNS, CREATING A GAUZY DISPLAY OF MUTED COLORS. vitality from blight. You know a store with a neon sign was highly successful, at least at one time, because the signs were expensive to make. Old-fashioned, durable neon signals through the night that a business has continued to survive. I became fascinated with neon when I was child. Living in Aspen’s downtown core, I watched the distributor install and maintain the

Febr u ar y 20 - Febr u ar y 26 , 20 14

requires years of experience. Craftsmen bend letters from heated glass tubes, a process that can require several attempts. They patch together short lengths to build long tubes and choose different tube linings to produce a spectrum of colors. Neon illuminated the Aspen of my childhood, emanating from Louie’s Liquors, Matthew’s Drug (now Carl’s) and the Skiers Chalet. Neon lit up the

Eagles and Elks buildings on Galena Street. Complementing the neon, light bulbs spelled out “Isis Theater.” Many hotels used neon for vacancy signs and while I can’t remember which ones, I think some businesses had “open” and “closed” neon signs. Neon in Aspen was especially intriguing in the winter; fluorescent colors stood out against the white snow when seen from blocks away. Sometimes snow partially covered the signs, creating a gauzy display of muted colors. I could spot the Skiers Chalet, a restaurant far from downtown, by their sign at the base of Ski Lift No. 1. It was likely helpful for them to advertise in such a far-reaching fashion, yet other locations did not require neon. Aspen had so few businesses that locals knew the whereabouts of every establishment and tourists could discover any particular one by walking around a couple of downtown blocks. At one time, neon-colored clothing marked skiers’ whereabouts on Aspen’s slopes. The fashion revolted me; neon belongs on the sides of buildings, lighting up a snowy 1950s night. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@ comcast.net.

GEAR of the WEEK

by CINDY HIRSCHFELD

STYLE POINTS: PATAGONIA UNTRACKED PANTS THE DILEMMA: You’ve tried a lot of brands and styles, but a great-fitting women’s ski pant seems as elusive as an Olympic medal for Lindsey Jacobellis.

THE FIX: Patagonia’s Untracked women’s pant (also available in men’s).

GET IT

$449 The local retailer that carried these pants is sold out, but you can find them online at backcountry.com and on sale at rei.com and evo.com, or visit patagonia.com.

WHY IT WORKS: “Have you lost weight?” my friend David asked when we met up to ski at Highlands earlier this winter. I hadn’t, but I attributed his query to the flattering style of my Untracked ski pants. Patagonia retooled the fit in its snow collection this winter, paying particular attention to women’s pants. Consider the multiple, yet subtle, seams in the Untracked, which look like the makings of an origami project. That articulated fit not only flatters but gives these three-layer Gore-Tex pants unfettered movement, whether I’ve worn them on slope or skinning in the backcountry. Toothy, angled zips down the thighs open to mesh-lined vents and also give a shot of style. Even the flap that covers the fly zipper is asymmetrically contoured for less bulk and a slimmer fit. Dial in that fit even more with the adjustable waistband.

BONUS: An embedded Recco reflector could help speed up search time after an avalanche burial. Yeah, not the kind of thing you want to think about, but relevant.

WINEINK

THE RHONE WAVE ROLLS IN THEY’RE BACK. But this time with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and perhaps a little Cinsault rather than the customary Pinot Noir. Yes, John Salamanski and Penny Devine of CS Wines are reinventing their fabled Pinot Posse tour to introduce Colorado to a new group of west coast winemakers, who are making great wines using Rhône varietals. Now I know there may KELLY J. be a distributor or two HAYES out there who is getting tired of my writing about CS and their wines. But if you want to bring bright, talented winemakers as an ensemble to the Valley and pour great wines at fun dinners where people learn and laugh, then I am both happy to attend and look forward to writing about them as well. Since their inception in 1999 as a small Denver import company with a goal of bringing interesting wines to the restaurants of Colorado’s cities and resorts, the CS portfolio has included three wines that have been named #1 on Wine Spectator’s Lists of Top 100 wines. Wines from Saxon Brown (1999), Paloma (2003) and Kosta Browne (2011) have all been wines of the year and all three continue to be represented here by John and Penny. Next week, on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., a newly convened group of winemakers, dubbed “The Rhone Wave,” will roll into Town Restaurant in Carbondale. They will pour their wines next to the always thoughtfully prepared dishes of Chef Bryce Orblom. At just $61.81 a plate, the six-course meal and the accompanying wines are a steal. By the way, the price represents not just great value but also the altitude of ‘Bonedale as well. That Mark Fischer has not lost his ability to be cute in his move up Main Street is a continuing theme at Town. The Rhone Wave includes Adam Tolmach from Ojai Vineyards (“just a few miles off the expressway” is how the Chicago native Salamanski described the

winery’s location, which is a few miles up the canyon — and the waves — from California’s Pacific Coast Highway) along with fellow Central Coasters Chris Cherry and Matt Trevisan from Villa Creek Winery and Linne Colodo, respectively. Sonoma County is represented by Arnot-Roberts and Red Car. And a repeat performer from the Pinot Posse, David O’Reilly, will be on hand with his “Sinister Hand” from Washington’s Yakima Valley. Lately, I have been having a love affair with Rhonestyle wines. By lately, I mean for about 30 years. Syrah from France gave way to Shiraz from Australia and then some warm clime wines from California and Washington. Add Grenache and Mourvedre to the list and these wines, in all their resplendent blends, may be my fave raves. Actually there are 22 grape varietals (see sidebar) recognized by the Rhone Rangers, a group organized to promote makers of these wines, that are considered “legal’ for inclusion in the wines. The Rhone Wave winemakers are all low production, high quality fanatics about the wines they produce. Arnot-Roberts, for example, produces a number of different wines but in quantities as low as just five barrels. “We may get fewer than 75 cases of a particular wine here in Colorado,” Salamanski said about the Arnot-Roberts allotment. Salamanski is proud to have an opportunity to bring this esteemed group of eclectic winemakers to Colorado, but he is equally excited about showing off the wines of the Rhône. Especially Syrah. “Syrah has traditionally been a really underutilized varietal here,” he notes. “Pinot Noir has a movie (Sideways), Cabernet has a name and Syrah has always just kind of

floated out there. But these guys are really making some great wines using the grape.” Though each of the wines on the docket for the Town dinner will be representative of the regions, grapes and personal preferences of the winemakers, there is a like-minded focus on producing cool climate wines with an emphasis on lower alcohol levels and higher acidity than that found in, say, Aussie Shiraz. These are wines made for drinking with food and exercising a little contemplative reasoning. Delicious and smart. Chef Orblom’s menu is a hearty one that will feature six courses tailor made for the wines. A bouillabaisse will open and be the right hand alongside O’Reilly’s “Sinister Hand. This will be followed by a rabbit paté, duck breast salad, braised oxtail…have I got you yet?

Oh, yeah, then there are the halfdozen wines that will be poured. “The wine and food pairings are amazingly good, the wines act as an added ingredient, rounding out and balancing with the food,” says Graham Hardy, the man at the front of the Town house. “They are some of the best pairings I have ever tasted. And the only neoprene in the restaurant will be my underwear,” he said tastefully. Oh, and he had one more final admonishment for those who plan to attend the Rhône Wave Dinner. “Kayaks and surf boards to be left at the front door, please.” Kelly J. SWEET & SOUR

HOW CHOCOLATE SAVES VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

STANDING IN THE ballroom of the Hotel Jerome last week, a visitor could close her eyes and imagine being in another magical place far away: Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The scent of cocoa wafted through the air from a decadent, dizzying array of cakes, cookies, tarts, brownies, candies, and other confections created by more than AMANDA 30 chefs in the Roaring RAE Fork Valley. Here at the 20th Annual Chocolate Classic, guests pushed aside pink balloons to devour some 13,000 bite-size samples, while guest judges nibbled through a blind tasting to crown champions from top entries. Despite the festive atmosphere and shared sugar high, the goal of the pre-Valentine’s Day contest was clear: to bring awareness to domestic assault and sexual assault through RESPONSE, the nonprofit advocacy organization serving victims in Pitkin and western Eagle counties since 1983. “The Chocolate Classic was designed to bring sweetness to a sour topic, an awareness that this is something that happens here,” says RESPONSE executive director Logan Hood. “It’s still taboo to talk about domestic violence. It’s not comfortable. It’s a dark, dark place for a lot of people.” National statistics are bitter, indeed — 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic violence in his or her lifetime. Sexual assault, meanwhile, is grossly underreported; some estimate that only 15% of victims speak out and seek help. Even with our lush landscape, close-knit community, and thriving social scene, Aspen is no different. Last year, RESPONSE helped nearly 600 abuse survivors. That amounts to 11,000 hours of intervention clocked by 45 volunteers through a 24-hour bilingual crisis hotline, emergency

and long-term shelter, court and medical assistance, adult and teen support groups, counseling, and referrals to partner agencies. “We don’t want to sugarcoat it,” Hood says. “Fundraising is critical, but it’s really important to bring awareness to our programs. Our mission is to support, educate, and empower victims — folks who may just need to talk to someone or process what has happened. Maybe they don’t want to call the police, they’re scared. Are there kids, animals involved? Our goal is to make sure they’re safe, help them navigate through. We are the first line of defense.” Domestic violence transcends physical or sexual abuse. “It’s coercion and control,” Hood says. “It’s psychological, emotional, RESPONSE financial — the gamut of 24-hour Hotline: power.” 970-925-SAFE (7233) Hearing that, I think of Office: 970-920-5357 acquaintances who have responsehelps.org been publicly humiliated or privately pushed around while trapped in an awful, chocolate and champagne lollipops, no-good, dead-end relationship. studded with pop rocks and topped Of a friend whose ex-girlfriend, with toasted meringue à la “Baked who tried to choke him during an Aspen.” argument. Since its founding 30 years ago, RESPONSE has grown to launch prevention programs within schools to target dating violence and sexual and cyber bullying. “Teens and tweens are dealing with pressures out there,” Hood says. “(We’re) talking about healthy boundaries and giving them tools.” The next time you taste chocolate, consider another startling national average: every 10 seconds, domestic violence or sexual assault claims a victim. That adds up to 360 incidents per hour, or nearly 1000 victims during the Chocolate Classic alone — one for every attendee this year. “Ultimately, we want the community to feel safe,” says Hood, who estimates that RESPONSE raised between $35,000 and $50,000 through sponsorships, ticket sales, and a silent auction. “That means healthy relationships.” Send sweetness to Amanda Rae: amandaraewashere@gmail.com

Extreme Sports Camp’s adult program includes both a physical and vocational component.

GOING TO EXTREMES

EXTREME SPORTS CAMP HELPS AUTISTIC ADULTS NAVIGATE THEIR TWENTIES MOST OF US millennials face numerous obstacles when it comes to navigating our 20s. We no longer have the security blanket of being enrolled in school, we often have to settle into a new community and make new friends, and we need to find a job that pays the bills. But imagine navigating the post-school world and being autistic. In the last two years, Extreme Sports Camp (ESC), a local nonprofit BARBARA organization, has tried to PLATTS not only imagine what it’s like to live with autism as an adult, but also help integrate those adults into the Roaring Fork Valley community through its adult program. “We have become more cognizant that autistic people needed to be treated as adults,” Sallie Bernard, the president of ESC, who has an autistic son in his twenties, said. “We are trying to understand, nation-wide, what it means to have a life and be a part of a community while living with autism.” Extreme Sports Camp and Autism Speaks, a national autism advocacy organization, were the beneficiaries of the third-annual Light It Up Blue Aspen Gala Sunday night at Hotel Jerome. Attendees decked out in all shades of blue (the official color for autism awareness) filled the Grand Ballroom for an evening dedicated to raising awareness of the developmental disorder.

“(The event) is important because we get to showcase all of the hard work the kids put in year round. It’s good for the parents because they get to sit back, relax, and feel proud of the kid they have raised,” Justin Engels, ESC’s team support specialist, said. “Even if five people take something from (the event) that helps.” Extreme Sports Camp was founded in 2004. The organization works to enhance health, social engagement, and the overall quality of life for people with autism. They do this through challenging athletic programs such as snowboarding and skiing in the winter and a wide range of activities in the summer, from rafting and wake boarding to rock climbing and caving. The adult program incorporates all of these physical activities, but also includes a vocational focus. The program runs year-round and campers are taught to apply for jobs, take public

Febr u ar y 20 - Febr u ar y 26 , 20 14

transportation, go out to concerts and other community events, and learn how to live independently by staying in ESC’s camp house or college dorms in the area. Carly Knauf, the adult program manager, said there are typically 10-12 adults in the program each week. There is no age limit for the program, but the average age for participants ranges from 19-27. “They are learning how to navigate the world and take it on independently in their twenties,” Knauf said. “They get to learn those lessons together and they become best friends.” Robert Doss, 19, recently transitioned to the adult program at ESC. He has been going to the camp since he was 13 years old. His progression to the adult program went very smoothly, partly due to his willingness to try new things and his tenacious work ethic. “I like working,” Doss said resolutely.

Last summer, he had several different jobs in the Roaring Fork Valley. He organized books at the Garfield County Public Libraries, sold food at the Carbondale Rodeo, planted and harvested vegetables for the Growing Food Forward organization, and volunteered with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers to build and maintain trails. He also started his own T-shirt company with shirts he designed himself and sold at the farmers market. He said that his favorite job was working outside in the garden. “Robert is our best worker at camp.” Engels said. “He knows when he has a job and when he has to do it, which helps him excel at everything he does.” Engels thinks that the adult program at ESC is particularly special because most of the counselors are close to the same age as the campers. “We do the same activities and have the same interests,” Engels said. “That allows us to create better bonds and help them enjoy things that regular 20- year olds would enjoy.” Both the counselors and the campers help each other navigate their twenties. “We want to be a support to them and their family and they are a huge support for us.” Knauf said. “We become almost an extended family.” Barbara Platts has loads of trouble navigating her twenties. BLUE, but not feeling it by KELLY J. HAYES

“FUNNY IS JUST STATING THE OBVIOUS IN WAYS THAT NOBODY HAS EVER SAID IT BEFORE.” So says Josh Blue, one of America’s best-loved comedians, who will appear at the 2014 Aspen Laff Festival as a headliner Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.

T

he “obvious” thing in Blue’s case is that he is very different from most people. Born with cerebral palsy, Blue spasmodically, some say rhythmically, works his way though both his act and his life, forcing others to come to their own acceptance of his state of being. It is his ability not only to coexist and prosper from his differences but also to make others feel comfortable with them that is his raison d’être. A Josh Blue show, for those who have never seen the comedian do his act, takes a little getting used to. “I’m fortunate enough now that most of my fans know and look forward to what to expect,” he said in a recent phone interview from his Denver home amid a schedule that sees him booked far and wide for more than 200 shows a year. “But when I began, I would take the stage and open with a classic icebreaker. People always ask me, ‘Aren’t you nervous getting up on stage in front of 300 people?’ Fuck no — more people than that stare at me every day. It seems to help put people at ease.” While the jerking movement associated with cerebral palsy is the elephant

in the act, it is just one element that contributes to making Blue one of the most highly sought comedic talents in the business. He is blessed with charm, likeability and a sense of comedic timing that is a triple threat for a comedian. “Laughter is an involuntary reflex when you think about it,” he said. “When something is funny, you just have to laugh whether you want to or not. If I can get three good belly laughs out of an audience, then I know I’ve got them.” Three laughs is just the beginning for most Blue shows. Since 2006, when he won the NBC series “Last Comic Standing,” he has been killing it night in and night out. Born in Cameroon, in West-Central Africa, while his father was teaching languages in a mission, Blue was afflicted at birth with cerebral palsy, a permanent but non-progressive disorder that impacts how the brain controls muscle movement. “They don’t know why,” Blue said. “Maybe it had something to do with where I was born, but in hindsight it is the best thing that could have happened. I mean, I know of lots of people who take life and things for granted.” A happy kid, Blue spent his youth in St. Paul, Minn., and attended Evergreen State College, also in Minnesota. As he grew older, he began to sense that his outgoing personality and positive outlook had an effect on people. He made occasional trips back to Africa and, while in college, did an internship at a zoo in Senegal. One day, on a lark,

“LAUGHTER IS AN INVOLUNTARY REFLEX WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT. WHEN SOMETHING IS FUNNY, YOU JUST HAVE TO LAUGH WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT. IF I CAN GET THREE GOOD BELLY LAUGHS OUT OF AN AUDIENCE, THEN I KNOW I‘VE GOT THEM.”

he locked himself into an exhibit area at the Parc de Hahn Zoo. As the crowd laughed at his antics and threw bananas and peanuts, an act was born. Blue knew that he could make people laugh. His first paying gig came in his early 20s on an open-mic night in Tacoma, Wash. He was paid $50. “I thought, ‘This is great. I can make people laugh and get paid for it,’” he recalled. Soon after, he came to Denver and began working the scene and honing an act. “I am very self-deprecating and very observational in my comedy,” he said. “At some point you have to let people in. You have to be personal and accessible.” The time in Denver paid off. “People don’t realize that the Denver comedy scene is one of the best comedy scenes in the country,” he noted. “On any given night there are 20 places with people doing stand-up.” While he already had begun to establish himself as a standup comic (Blue had won the Comedy Works 2002 Talent Search and taken the top spot in the Las Vegas Comedy Festival), his big break came in 2006 when he got a shot on “Last Comic Standing.” “It was supposed to be an eight-week series, but it ended up going 13. Each week I advanced. It just blew up bigger and bigger. I could feel my career double every week. In the end I won $50K, which turned out to be 8 bucks after taxes. But it made me a career.” Today, Blue is living the dream. That is, if your dream includes spending half your life wedded to United Airlines. In fact, I first met Josh this past fall when he sat next to me on a flight from Denver to Pittsburgh, where he was flying for just one night to a private gig. As he slid, or rather jerked, his way past me into seat 1A, he made a joke about having to “get his sippy cup.” He had me hooked, and we chatted for much of the flight. Blue is a regular on not only the comedy club circuit but television and the Internet, as well. He has appeared frequently on top-tier shows on Comedy Central and Bravo, and he was the first comedian booked to do “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” And his YouTube features generate millions of views. The age of social media has changed how comics get noticed and are viewed, Blue said. There are advantages as well as disadvantages for comedians. “On the one hand, you can get more stuff out there all the time,” he noted. “But it can be a drag if people tape your shows and play them so when you get to the next gig, people already know your act.” If you have never seen Blue perform, the jokes will all be new to you. But he has a significant number of fans who come again and again. “The way I look at it, jokes are the bricks and improv is the mortar,” he said in describing his act. “Comedy is hard, man, and you want to do it right. I recycle and change the show every year, but about 90 percent of my act is the same most nights.”

Those are the jokes that are tried and true. Blue works smart, and part of that is due to his facility with languages. “Really, comedy is all about language and words. How you twist and turn them is what makes things funny,” he said. As his father was involved in teaching languages, Blue was a fast learner, as well. “I speak French fluently, but I also speak Wolof, which is a native language of Senegal,” he said. “I used to do some jokes in Wolof, but people didn’t really get them. Maybe it’s time to break them out again.” In addition to languages, Blue is a determined striker. As in soccer striker. In 1994, he played on the U.S. Paralympic soccer team, competing at the Paralympic Games in Athens. “I may not be the best defensive player, but I know how to find the back of the net,” he said with a confidence that was tinged with a touch of Beckham. He has played with the team in seven different countries and boasts that he has scored 20-plus goals. It is another example of Blue finding a vehicle for his talents rather than being hindered by his disability. “I get so frustrated that people are always looking for the differences between people,” he said. “It’s easy

“THINK ABOUT IT: THE DISABLED ARE THE WORLD’S LARGEST MINORITY GROUP. AND IT IS THE ONLY MINORITY THAT YOU CAN JOIN. YOU COULD BE IN A CAR ACCIDENT TOMORROW AND BECOME ONE OF US.”

to find with me, but I’m always looking for the commonalities.” While he once struggled with being a “poster child” for the disabled as a public person, he now embraces the role. “Pretty much anything in my act comes from the standpoint of my disability. And that gives me a platform that others don’t have,” he said. “Think about it: The disabled are the world’s largest minority group. And it is the only minority that you can join. You could be in a car accident tomorrow and become one of us.” So what should you expect from a Josh Blue show? “It’s a show where you’re going to laugh from start to finish,” he said. “Come with no preconceived notion of either disabilities or comedy, and you’ll be blown away. Be prepared to laugh until your sides hurt. Your back will hurt from laughing when you leave.” As for Blue, he is looking forward to his return to Aspen. “I love making people laugh,” he says, “And I love playing a beautiful venue. What could be better than that?” Sounds obvious.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

by KARL HERCHENROEDER

FREEKER BY THE SPEAKER GETS FUNKY IN ASPEN FROM 1995 TO 1997, Keller Williams lived in Steamboat Springs, where he played the same bar every Thursday. He’d perform one set before the dinner rush and one set after, leaving his equipment behind in between. One night, his guitar was stolen from the stage. As a show of good faith, the owner of the restaurant, BW3’s, bought Williams a ski pass. For two seasons, Williams worked that angle, taking home $50 and a dinner for each show in addition to the ski pass. Williams’ first stop in Colorado was at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where he saw the String Cheese Incident in a bar with about 50 other people. Following the band to a few other mountain towns, Williams finally introduced himself in Colorado Springs, where he gave drummer Michael Travis and bassist Keith Moseley some of his recorded music. By the winter of 1996, he was opening for the String Cheese Incident at Boulder’s Fox Theater, and in 1997, Williams joined the band on a national tour, serving as the opener for 100 shows. “They gave me the national exposure that I so desperately needed,” Williams, 44, said. “They took me out of the corners of the restaurants and put me on a stage with an actual PA that I didn’t have to load in.” Williams, a Fredericksburg, Va., native who has played with a multitude of musicians, including Yonder Mountain String Band, Victor Wooten, the Rhythm Devils, Umphrey’s McGee and Dumpstaphunk, has released 20 albums since 1994. A versatile musician who plays across multiple genres, Williams is known for his solo shows, in which he uses a Roland RC-300 looper, a wide variety of effect pedals, an iPad mixer, a Martin HD-28 guitar, a customized Andrew White guitar with a synthesizer pickup and a road-worn Mexican bass guitar. On Thursday, he returns to Belly Up, this time with Richmond, Va., funk band More Than a Little. “I don’t think anything I do is very much a stretch,” Williams said of his ability to cross over genres. “It

keeps it new and refreshing and fun as opposed to banging out the same songs with the same people all the time, which I totally appreciate. For me personally, on the lower kind of level that I am, I’m allowed to explore, and I’m so very grateful to do so.” Williams’ interest in music began at the age of 3, when he saw the TV show “Hee Haw,” featuring country musicians Buck Owens and Roy Clark. He pretended to play instruments until age 12, when he learned a few

chords from a friend. At 16, he had his first paying gig, followed by years of playing coffee shops, restaurants and private parties. He’d drive an hour to one town on a Monday and another town on a Tuesday. By the weekend, he was opening for other bands, or holding “the audience’s attention for 40 minutes,” as he put it. The loopers, pedals and synthesizers Williams used for his solo shows then are much different than the gadgets readily available today. Speaking in the feigned voice of an old man, Williams said, “Way back then, we didn’t have these loopers! We used delay units, and we set those parameters, and we played in those parameters, and we liked it!” It was Victor Wooten, at a show in Cincinnati in 1998, who turned Williams on to the Lexicon JamMan, a step up from the delay units, which “weren’t meant to do what I wanted to do.” After using the JamMan, he bought three Oberheim Echoplexes, which he struggled with for years. He said it wasn’t until the Roland RC-300 looper,

which he uses today, that he found everything he needed on one piece of equipment. “They should send me several units for free,” he said of Roland. “It’s painfully obvious how I’m promoting their product and still paying full price. I need them much more than they need me.” Combine the “improvisational, Americana, psychedelic” style of the Grateful Dead with the “solo, acoustic, new-age funk” of Michael Hedges, and you have the influences of the 17-year-old Williams. Add in Wooten, Bela Fleck and Bobby McFerrin, and you have the foundation for Williams’ musical career. “I feel extremely lucky to be able to (explore all these genres),” he said. “I try to stay close to my roots. Even at these More Than a Little shows, there’s a large chunk of solo-acoustic looping that some have only seen me do. That’s definitely prominent in the show. After that, my friends come out, and we get funky.” herk@aspentimes.com

Keller Williams, known for his intricate one-man shows, plays Thursday, Feb. 20, with funk band More Than a Little at Belly Up.

They met when Holly and Irene’s father were working together in the oil fields of Kansas and were married in 1938. Over the years they had eight children: Louise, Kenny, Charles, Jim, Roy, Bob. Charlotte and David: 25 grandchildren and many many greatgrandchildren. Holly had Holly’s Electric for many years. They purchased their land in Woody Creek in 1959. Carolyne Hyde ,who grew up in Aspen, recently stepped down as executive director of Denver’s Quarterly Forum which she had founded 15 years ago. She will now be the chairwoman of the organization which she founded to “engage and inform the next generation of leadership.” The Forum revolves around quarterly breakfast meetings that focus on business, politics or cultural issues. Aspen photogapher David Marlow is just back from shooting a 12-day assignment of a compound in the British Virgin Islands on Virgin Gorda. The compound included private beach, staff of 20, multiple living dwellings, pool, yacht, gardens and tennis court. David took his son Johnny as his assistant. Johnny is shooting headshots for actors and actresses in Hollywood...most recently shooting head shots for Felicity Huffman. David was recently commissioned to shoot the Charles Gwathmy house in Aspen over the course of a year...it will become a book on the great architect’s work. Undercurrent...When Stewart Oksenhorn died...I had no words.

GYPSY, ROSIE, AGUILLA AND LEA

One-year-old Chiweenies (Chihuahua/Dachshund mixes) found abandoned in Texas. Cute as buttons! Gypsy is the most outgoing, affectionate and very alert to her surroundings. Rosie is also very affectionate, now more comfortable with women but can be won over with gentle handling by anyone. Aguilla, also very friendly and loving, is the only male + is particularly fond of Gypsy whom he likes to groom. Lea is timid now with most people but will come out of her shell once she knows it is safe to trust people.

PIPPA

Beautiful, scruffy, 9-month-old Australian Cattle Dog/Terrier mix. Great with people and other dogs. Unfortunately, she developed a taste for her previous owner’s pet chickens. If you don’t raise chickens, this pretty, happy, friendly dog, might be for you!

ROXY

Large, beautiful 9-year-old Sharpei/ Rottweiler/Hound mix. Not for the novice dog owner. Very protective of her home + car. Blossoms into a soft, attentive, affectionate companion once she knows you. A great dog who just needs a very responsible, loving home :).

SPYDER

FRANKIE

Very friendly, 6-month-old, black and white-colored, blue-eyed Pit Bull male. Found in Basalt 1/9. We named him Frankie (“Ol’ Blue Eyes” Sinatra) because of his beautiful blue eyes.

MAX

Handsome, outgoing, 9-year-old Siberian Husky. In keeping with his breed, Max is goodlooking and he likes to exercise, but he is not trustworthy off his leash.

HUNTER

This sweet, mostly blind, 9-year-old miniature Schnauzer female was turned in to the shelter because her owner was ill and could no longer take care of her. Very deserving of a home at this point in her life.

BOOK REVIEW

NOTEWORTHY

‘CROSSING PURGATORY’ THOMPSON GREY abandons his Indiana farm in 1858 and joins a caravan of pioneers trekking west along the Santa Fe Trail in Gary Schanbacher’s accomplished new novel. “Crossing Purgatory” is a moral Western that questions what any decent human being owes another amid the harsh conditions of the American frontier. Thompson’s wife and sons died of diphtheria while he was away on a fruitless mission to seek an advance on his inheritance, and he plunges into deep mourning, blaming himself for being absent when his family became ill. In grief and guilt, he tramps west, a man with his “spirit out of fix,” and with no plan in mind until he encounters a caravan led by Captain Upperdine, a shrewd businessman who guides groups of potential settlers across pioneer trails and trades with Indians, homesteaders and prospectors along the way.

by CHARLES M. DEBER / edited by WILL SHORTZ

IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO

Upperdine sees the taciturn wanderer as an asset, a competent and honorable man who can assist his current group of travelers. When violence strikes along the trail, Thompson feels responsible for the pregnant wife and teenage son that the murdered man leaves behind. The one-time farmer, in his harrowing grief, would rather drift across the prairie like a tumbleweed, but that kind of behavior is not in his nature. He painstakingly fulfills both real and self-imposed obligations, and as a natural farmer, can’t shake his dream for his own land, a yearning that sometimes leads him to act in unexpectedly rash ways. When the group arrives at Upperdine’s homestead north of New Mexico, near the confluence of the Arkansas and Purgatoire rivers, Thompson settles in to help the folks he met on the trail, as well as the family

of Benito Ibarra, Upperdine’s brotherin-law. At this point, Schanbacher switches to Benito’s perspective, hinting that Thompson may not be as pure in his aims as he appears. “Is this a place of banishment or of second chances?” Benito wonders when he looks at the land they now farm together. Through clear, lyrical prose, and convincing historical detail, Schanbacher examines the moral dilemmas facing Thompson and Benito, men trying to lead upright and useful lives in a place ruled by lawlessness and the punishing caprices of nature. “Crossing Purgatory” is an especially thoughtful frontier story that will leave readers thinking about its characters long after the final page.
