POPULAR MUSIC THE LEGENDARY WAR-
REN HAYNES set aside his freewheeling rock roots on his latest record, “Ashes & Dust,” and settled into a quieter and mostly acoustic mode. He’s bringing his tour with the Ashes & Dust Band to Belly Up Aspen on Saturday, April 2. He made the new record with members of the progressive bluegrass outfit Railroad Earth and is touring with a different set of four pickers and strummers, exploring a fresh take on rustic Americana with some plugged-in guitar flourishes. Haynes, of course, has been a regular in these parts — performing with the Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t mule and, last year, with the Sco-Mule collaboration with John Scofield. It seems like every time he makes his way to the mountains, he’s hit some rich new vein of music he wants to explore, like the string music of the Ashes & Dust project. “For some reason, the Colorado audiences love to be a part of spontaneous music and music that’s driven by improvisation, that’s a little more experimental and adventurous,” Haynes told The Aspen Times last year. “Fans in that part of the country take music seriously and don’t want to be forcefed the same commercial music that everyone else is listening to.” The show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Tickets are $85-$185, available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com.
Warren Haynes will return to Belly Up Aspen on Saturday, April 2.

LITERATURE HE’S A MAGICIAN. He’s a comedian. He’s Mike Super. The illusionist and winner of NBC’s “Phenomenon” and finalist on “America’s Got Talent” headlines the Wheeler Opera House with a family-friendly magic show on Saturday, April 2. Mike Super blends world-class magic with irreverent humor and audience participation. His show is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $38, available at the Wheeler Opera House box office and www.aspenshowtix.com.
SANDRA CISNEROS will close the 2015-16 Winter Words series with a talk at Paepcke Auditorium on Tuesday, April 5. Cisneros, the celebrated author of the literary classic “The House on Mango Street,” last year published the memoir “A House of My Own.” The new book compiles three decades of her writing and touches on a wide range of topics — from her family to the writing life and how she handled the worldwide embrace of her first novel. Cisneros is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the Wheeler Opera House box office and www.aspenshowtix.com.

THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION
with JOHN COLSON
Kudos for Cuba visit and hope for more I WATCHED with eager approval as President Obama visited Cuba last week, in his continuing effort to undo a half-century of idiotic posturing and pandering by the U.S. political establishment, which has been determined to demonize Fidel Castro and his government for political gain at the expense of common sense and compassion for Cuba’s status as a veritable suburb of Florida. I was fascinated to read that Fidel, perhaps feeling left out of things when Obama did not take time out to visit with him, condemned the president’s trip and rejected any idea of rapprochement with the U.S., reportedly writing, “We don’t need the empire to give us anything.” I’ve had the feeling Fidel has never truly acclimated himself to the fact that, at 89, he’s too old to govern the country, nor to the conciliatory moves toward the U.S. made by his brother, Raul, who took the reins of government from Fidel in 2008. It also was intriguing to watch as a dozen Aspen High School students flew to the island nation for a week of interaction and study, helping to open up the avenues of communication that have been closed since the U.S. snubbed Cuba and all but forced the Castro regime to turn to the Soviet Union for support and commerce. I salute both the president and the AHS students, and wish like hell that I could be there with them. Cuba is a cool but very complicated place that I visited for a 10-day tour in 1978, and one to which I have wanted to return for decades. In fact, a band of friends and I have been plotting for some time to do just that, one of these days. In the meantime, my observation of the reaction to Obama’s visit has led to a feeling of resigned despair, as too many of my fellow citizens seem locked into believing lies they have been fed since Castro took over Cuba in 1959. I’ve been there, I witnessed first-hand the promise and the problems brought on by the revolution, and I remain hopeful that Cuba can find its own solutions in ways that are neither capitalist nor communist. The fact is that, when he took over, Fidel was not any kind of a communist. He actually might have harbored resentment against Cuban communist activists, who had declined to help him out in 1958 when, during the revolution, he tried to organize a general strike against then-President Fulgencio Batista. Batista was a puppet of the U.S. who had stood by while U.S. mobsters and American corporate henchmen (sugar plantations and oil refineries at the top of the list) looted the island and turned it into a raucous
playground for rich Americans while a third of the native Cuban population lived in poverty. But any hope Fidel had that he could work with the U.S. to build a new kind of nation were quickly dashed. When U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower sent a friend of Batista’s to become the new U.S. ambassador to Cuba, it seemed an insult to Fidel, who already was pissed off over U.S. arms shipments to Batista during the revolution. Fidel concluded he wanted nothing to do with any deal, or any deal maker, that could return the island nation to its previous status as a client state of U.S. hegemonic interests in the Caribbean. Thus it was that, within six months of Fidel taking power, the U.S. started making plans to overthrow his government and take over the island. So much for extending an open and helping hand to a troubled neighboring nation. The story of U.S. betrayal and hostility toward Castro’s Cuba is a long and hideous one, and one that should be studied by anyone interested in the situation 90 miles south of Florida’s tip. It cannot be denied that Fidel Castro, reacting to U.S. actions, became a despot and a tyrant, imprisoning large numbers of people, executing some of them, strangling the existing free press and generally behaving like a thug in too many ways. I can’t excuse any of that, but I can in some ways understand it. After all, Cuban Americans in Florida have long made it clear that they wanted Fidel’s head on a pike, and were intimately involved in the CIA-sponsored, disastrous Bay of Pigs “invasion” of 1961, which ended in chaos and blood on a sunny beach. The two presidential wannabes with Cuban blood in their veins — Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz — both are rabid Castro haters who have been outspoken in their condemnation of Obama’s trip to the island, and their interest in ridding the world of any and all Castros. So, for Fidel in the past and Raul today, dealing with the U.S. has to be akin to approaching a somnolent female boar with a milking pail — great care must be taken, hostile moves should be expected, and the whole thing might end very badly. Thus Raul, while clearly open to trade and travel between Cuba and the U.S., is moving slowly, as he should. The history of our two nations has been a fraught one, and it will take more than one bally-hooed visit by a president to restore trust and friendship.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES
FROM the VAULT
by TIM WILLOUGHBY
April Fools’ Day pranksters tricked their victims with radiators such as this one. American Radiator Company manufactured these home heating devices from 1890 to 1910.
ADVICE: A USEFUL TOOL FOR THE APRIL FOOL My father April fooled me every year when I was young.
He usually pulled off his trickery during breakfast, before I realized the date. Feeling embarrassed, each year I vowed I would never take the bait again. But Father managed to fool me over and over again. He seemed to enjoy simultaneously catching me off guard, administering gullibility training, and instructing me in the art of tomfoolery. Aspen held a long tradition of making the most of April Fools’ Day, also called All Fools’ Day. Although the practice goes way back in recorded history, younger generation Americans tried to best their seniors with a revival of the custom during the 1890s and early 1900s. The verb “to April fool” applied to everyday situations such as one from 1888, “Mr. William L. Hopkins is up from Emma. He still has hopes of being able to put ripe tomatoes on the Aspen market in time to April fool the fellows who think that Emma does not enjoy a tropical climate.” The following 1902 admonition from the Aspen Times characterizes the culprits, “today the jokes and hoaxes practiced are usually confined to boys and young men who have not yet raised more than a growth of down on their upper lips.” The most common jokes gently deceived the elders. His take, “this little caprice of theirs was as much fun to them as a whole circus is to a small boy.” In 1901 the boys of the Lincoln School “played an April fool trick on the bell and broke the clapper. from their parents. Fearing just desserts from their parents, the contrary students negotiated with their principal, vowed to never skip school again, and promised to “be good.” It appeared that they kept their promise because throughout the 1920s the date was often used as an
excuse to hold dances or to arrange parties rather than pranks. But boys will be boys. On April Fools’ Day of 1941, students and teachers held school with open windows. Someone had slathered the radiators with garlic and Limburger cheese. An Aspen Times editor advised long ago, “The best way to take the April Fool joke is to take it smiling even though it does not go well. Do not get angry and the joker will lose half his fun. Get mad about it and his fun will be at least doubled.” Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. “BEST WEEK OF PICTURES EVER SEEN IN ISIS THEATRE,” declared the Aspen Democrat-Times on Feb. 27, 1922. “The close of the First National Week of pictures with the presentation of “Molly O’” ended the best program of photoplays ever seen in Aspen and the management of the Isis theatre is to be highly commended for giving our people such an excellent line of pictures. There was not a poor show in the entire week’s program, in fact each was a super special. The concluding number, ‘Molly O’’ was witnessed by two large audiences, matinee and evening, and all were enthusiastic in their praise of the production. It certainly was a dandy and Miss Mabel Normand made an ideal Molly — keeping everybody including herself in hot water until the finish when she dropped from a parachute into the cold, cold sea. Come again Mr. Morrison, your patrons are under everlasting obligation to you for giving them such a versatile program of supers as you did last week.” This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org.

GEAR of the WEEK
by STEPHEN REGENOLD
‘POPTICALS’ ARE FOLD-UP SUNGLASSES
GLASSES CAN BE BULKY OR VULNERABLE when stashed in a pocket or pack. A different concept, Popticals are wrap-around sunglasses that fold up and fit inside an egg-shaped case. Lenses on the Popticals slide apart and then nest close together. The bows hinge and fold. A hardside case clicks securely shut, latching closed as a 4-inch oblong container that slips into spaces as tight as a hip pocket on your pants. I ran and biked wearing the company’s Popgun model for a review this month. At $199, you pay more for the stow-away nature of these glasses and the accompanying rugged case. In addition to the small size, the Popgun glasses are light, weighing just one ounce. The case adds another ounce, resulting in a featherweight pod that contains your optics ready for primary or backup use. During the review process, the glasses performed well in winter and early-spring weather. The lenses, made of polyamide, are polarized and highly impact-resistant, Popticals touts. Requisitely, they filter out all UV rays, and they are sharp and clear in bright sun during my test.
The frames are made of Grilamid, a strong plastic polymer often used in ski boots that has some flex. The result is a pair of glasses that give adequate coverage and are comfortable on the face. A caveat: These are slim and small glasses, and they may not work for bigger faces. They looked fine on me, but on one friend the Popguns seemed more like kid-size glasses. In the outdoors, I was happy trail running
with the Popgun glasses. On a bike, however, these glasses do not work. Crouched just slightly on my road bike, eyes angled to look ahead, the top bridge of the glasses got into my line of sight. The lenses are simply not large enough to work for this view. Overall, the Popguns are good all-around options for hiking, climbing and paddling. A wraparound design blocks light from the periphery, and the lens tint and polarization let them work in varying conditions. But packability is the primary selling point. Once you’re ready to stow them away, the Popticals pull apart from the middle of the nosepiece. The system is made of minute rails built into the frames, stainless steel pins and a magnet to guide pieces into place. It’s a slick system. Pull the lenses and they disengage, with one lens sliding on the rail to nest behind the other. The bows then fold down, four hinges granting a compact new shape. Then into the tiny case they go. The Popticals are protected and ready to stow away, in a backpack or a pocket, until the sun comes out again. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

WINEINK
A GATHERING OF MASTERS A VIEWING OF UNCORKED AT THE LITTLE NELL
NO SINGLE PLACE ON EARTH has been the incubator for so many Master Sommeliers, the wine world’s Knights of the Round Table, as Aspen. And more specifically, The Little Nell hotel. So it is fitting that this Sunday, April 3, Aspen’s Little Nell Hotel will host an exclusive evening of wine, video, conversation and live music to celebrate “Uncorked,” the Esquire KELLY J. television series that HAYES popped the cork on the world of prospective Masters. The wine-centric event will also serve as the ski season’s closing carnival for Chair 9, the Nell’s acclaimed aprèsski bar that has been party central this winter. From 6-10 p.m. at Chair 9, on April 3, you can imbibe in a glass of fine wine for just $5, meet, mingle and learn from local Aspen Master Sommeliers Carlton McCoy, Jonathan Pullis and Jay Fletcher, who will participate in a panel discussion, and enjoy the final, climactic episode of “Uncorked” on three big flat-screen televisions. Sounds like a perfect spring Sunday. Oh, and there will be dancing, as local band Sleight of Hand takes the stage for an acoustic show. And it is all open to the wineloving public.
‘UNCORKED,’ THE SHOW If you missed “Uncorked,” which ran this past fall on the Esquire Channel, you missed the drama, the sorrow, the accomplishment and the wine. The show’s six-part series follows a half-dozen New York sommeliers as they endeavor to pass the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Tasting & Practical Service Exams at The Little Nell. To become Masters, candidates must pass three grueling tests that measure their skills in wine tasting, service and theory. The stars of “Uncorked” are all knowledgeable, likable and photogenic. They include Jack Mason, a soft-spoken 28-year-old, Texas-raised Christian with a streak of nerves that shows up when the heat is on; Jane Lopes, the only woman of the chosen six, who has a degree from the University of Chicago and a scholar’s way with study; and Dana Gaiser, a

flamboyant, though seemingly shy tasting savant who can be as flawed as a corked wine depending upon the challenge. Who will pass? The series was shot over the months leading up to the exam, which was administered at The Little Nell last May. Former Little Nell Director of Food and Beverage Sabato Sagaria, who is now the Chief Restaurant Officer of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group in NYC, is prominently featured as are other local Masters including The Little Nell’s Carlton McCoy and Jay Fletcher. “Uncorked, the Series” is engaging, tense and, dare I say it, educational. It is also a hell of a lot of fun. The final episode of “Uncorked” will air at 6:30 p.m. after an opening reception.
THE ASPEN MASTERS PANEL Following the screening, three of Aspen’s most esteemed wine professionals will participate in a panel discussion about the arduous path to becoming a Master Sommelier. Master Sommeliers Carlton McCoy of The Little Nell, Jonathan Pullis of Chefs Club Aspen, and Jay Fletcher from Southern Wine & Spirits will join me and chat about the show, their love of wine and how the Master Sommelier “Pin”, the symbol worn by those who have achieved the pinnacle of success in mastering wine, has changed their lives. This represents a rare opportunity to hear from what is essentially three different generations of Aspen’s accomplished wine experts. McCoy, the most recent to pass the exams in 2013, leads a wine program at The Little Nell’s Element 47 restaurant that has been a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner since 1995, and that has achieved recognition as one of America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants from Wine Enthusiast. Pullis, who was pinned in 2009 when he worked the floor at The Little Nell, is now the CEO of Chefs Club. The Aspen- and New Yorkbased restaurants bring the curated menus of a cadre of the world’s best chefs to its kitchens while pairing them with the world’s best wines. And before any of them came Fletcher, who started the Aspen tradition when he passed the Master’s exam in London in 1996. Today Fletcher works as Director

of Fine Wine for Southern Wine and Spirits and runs the prestigious Guild of Sommeliers, a nonprofit based in the United States whose vision is to provide community (virtual and real) and a strong education for wine lovers. Not only are these three exemplary examples of the Masters, they are also significant players in the Aspen community. As well as awesome skiers, bikers and runners.
THE LITTLE NELL Amazingly, at least 11 of the 230 Masters who have passed the exams worldwide have worked at the Nell and, with Fletcher included, 12 Aspen-based wine experts have passed the exam. And it is not just those who have passed the Masters who contribute to the community’s wine culture. This year, 39 members of the current staff at The Little Nell have achieved at least Level 1, Introductory Sommelier status under the tutelage of Master Sommelier
Carlton McCoy, making it the home of the largest collection of Court members anywhere. So ingrained is The Little Nell in the Master Somm culture that it often serves as the site of the exams. Each spring, the Court holds The Master Exams at the Nell and this year it will also host the Introductory Course and Exam, along with the Certified Exam. The applicants who come to the Nell to take the exams have spent months, even years, in their quest to achieve the prestigious pin that goes with passing the exam. Ski season is winding down and it’s time for wine season. Kick it off at Chair 9 this Sunday. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE LARMANDIER-BERNIER ‘VIEILLE VIGNE DU LEVANT’ 2007 On the show one of the sommeliers has a particular affinity for bubbles. This Somm actually passes the exam. Guess which candidate it is. This is what he /she suggests goes best with “Uncorked”: “I would definitely suggest a bottle of Champagne. There are few things better than a nice, refreshing glass of Blanc de Blancs Champagne and an episode of ‘Uncorked.’ I am particularly partial at the moment to the Larmandier-Bernier ‘Vieille Vigne du Levant’ ‘07 from a single vineyard in Cramant. This deep, rich style of a Chardonnaybased Champagne still has a soft, refreshing lift to it and generally ends up disappearing much more quickly than one might want it to!”

THE NEW COOKING SCHOOL OF ASPEN SHAKES UP DINING OUT
THERE’S A NEW RESTAURANT in town, but chances are you haven’t dined there yet. It opened a few weeks ago in a snazzy underground space boasting one of the biggest, tricked out open kitchens this town has seen. For folks who chase good food, the new Cooking School of Aspen — a larger, more intensive reboot of the tiny educational venue of the same name that AMANDA ran for over a decade RAE from the mid-1990s — is game-changing. It’s almost like the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, 365 days a year. “I’ve had a 10-rated meal in an empty restaurant, and it was good, but it wasn’t great,” says Glenn Smith, kicking off his Friday-night Improv Cooking class last week in the school’s JennAir demonstration kitchen to about a dozen diners. “Something was missing.” The comedian, artist, and personal chef’s anecdote reflects on how we rate the overall experience of dining out. How many times have we seen a dead restaurant situated next to a packed venue, yet we choose to hop on the waitlist at the busy place instead? Often that decision is not based on the food served. Through a fast-paced, snappy presentation, Smith aims to inspire students toward a more casual, fun approach to home cooking. Good ingredients and time, he says, are all we need. So each week he outlines a menu starring a specific protein —tonight, wild Atlantic monkfish — to season with plenty of tricks and off-the-cuff experimentation. Over two hours, Smith — a tall, lean figure with a shock of curly hair and square black spectacles framing wildly expressive eyes—presents a signature brand of culinary instruction honed over a decade, including at the original Cooking School. A regular on the local stand-up circuit and past presenter at Food & Wine, Smith counts stints on Ian Bagg’s HBO comedy special and Good Morning America. Imagine Julia Child at her

zaniest, throw in a sprinkle of Robin Williams ad-libbing, a dash of wisdom à la Bill Nye the Science Guy, and a spoonful of vaudeville charm — a recipe prime for engaging a chatty audience. (Wine helps, too.) Our crowd tonight represents guests of all ages with varying levels of kitchen expertise: A young couple and an older couple on date night, a girls’ outing or two, a father-son duo hanging out over a coursed meal. At one point Smith calls an off-duty cook to join him behind the stove to flip crab cakes; later he invites a visiting 23-year-old New Yorker to torch crème brulée As soon as I estimate Smith’s educational tidbits as common sense, he drops knowledge. We all need reminding. Say you’re a supermarket, surveying lemons, Smith says. “Who buys the fourpack?” Mumbling all around. “If you buy a four-pack of lemons — or better yet, avocados — and two of ‘em aren’t good, you’re spending twice as much. Bad economics! Take time to buy. Be that weird person — grab ‘em all.” He sets parsley stems — leaves ripped off quickly using the tines of a fork, brilliant! — and vegetable scraps aside for stock, so why don’t we? “You’re paying per pound,” Smith reminds us. “I’m not saying I’m cheap, but why would you waste it?” We’re coached on knife selection and usage. “Try ‘em on” during shopping, he says. “If it feels weird in your hand, you’re not gonna cook.” The most efficient slicing motion? “Just like a connecting rod on train.” Wine is integral to fueling the freewheeling dynamic. We’re all a bit buzzed when Cooking School owner Rob Ittner strolls by to refresh wineglasses and wax poetic on grape varietal, terroir, and winemaker style. “This is the best lesson you’re gonna have, which only happens one out of every 20 classes,” Ittner begins after pouring Lenné Estate pinot noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. He pauses, we sip. What do we think?
Mar ch 3 1 - Apr il 6, 2016
Hesitant murmurs. It smells super earthy, alright. Dank even. “This wine is actually corked,” Ittner declares. A-ha. Botrytis bacteria has infiltrated the bottle’s cork, however subtly. “Corked is a note; I get wet dog or a musty newspaper smell to it,” he continues. “The last thing we want in a restaurant is for you to have a corked wine — an impression that something was off or that it’s OK, but you’re not gonna order it again. Don’t be afraid to send wine back.” This unexpected lesson launches a discussion about conscious tasting. Ittner’s edict: “‘The nose knows but cannot tell.’ We taste thru association, through language,” he explains. (That’s the focus of an Aspen Young Professionals Association networking event on April 6; at 3,000 squarefeet, The Cooking School can accommodate parties of two to 120 seated, 160 standing.) Another valuable lesson: learn to trust intuition. Says Smith on separated egg whites poured from a bowl: “Every time it glops, that’s one egg.” On whisking: “You want to incorporate air — so make noise!” When oil starts to vibrate in the pan, it’s hot enough. Listen carefully to food-processor vinaigrette—
the hum deepens at the golden acid-oil ratio. I learn to whip egg whites until frothy to achieve soufflé-like crab cakes. Ittner sears lemon halves as seafood garnish — lemony, candied bitterness — a tip learned during Smith’s class…some twelve years ago. “You are right about it being an interesting night out for dinner,” says Dawn Shepard, a personal trainer and nutritionist who attended a demonstration on plant-based cooking with a friend recently. Chef Bryan Nelson, formerly of Pacifica, prepared wild mushroom and barley “risotto” with caramelized sweet potato medallions and raw “cheesecake” with chia seed pudding. “I am inspired to try all of the recipes — the English pea hummus was divine and a fresh twist perfect for spring,” Shepard enthuses. “All of Rob’s selections were amazing. I learned a bit more about wine pairings, especially with plant-based foods. I will be going back for more classes.” Upcoming: Chinese Dim Sum on April 31; “Spice it Up” with chef Susie Jimenez on April 13; a primer on high-altitude bread baking on April 20. Culinary feasts will showcase exotic flavors — Cajun,

Oaxacan, and Ethiopian to Southern French and Californian. A pop-up restaurant might feature former Aspen chef Charles Dale returning from Santa Fe. Chef Barclay Dodge has reprised Mogador classics and taught sous-vide techniques — our class enjoyed his leftover short ribs from a recent session. (Dodge’s butter-poached lobster tail at Mogador was inspiration for Smith’s meaty monkfish, too.) Jazz Aspen Snowmass will host art least five events here during its 2016 JAS Cafe Summer Series, including Latin jazz percussionist and Poncho Sanchez on July 22-23 (he’ll cook a special dinner on July 21 using recipes from his new cookbook) and 12-year-old Balinese pianist and Grammy Award nominee Joey Alexander on Aug. 6-7. A seminar on pairing music with food, led by Aspen Music Festival president and composed Alan Fletcher, is in the works. Summer brings Wednesday farmto-table dinners on Rustique Bistro’s outdoor patio, using fresh bounty from the Aspen Saturday Market ($75). Late-night food fights may return by demand, alongside wine, beer, and spirits tastings, health and wellness courses, and catered events made breezy thanks to the school’s full commercial kitchen adjoining the demonstration space. “It’s smaller than a ballroom, more expansive than a small restaurant like Rustique, with the functionality of our banquet kitchen,” Ittner explains. “You don’t need to take a gondola to get there, or a bus. You’re in walking distance to the hotels.” Prices ain’t cheap — $65 to $165 per class, on average. Then again, neither is dining out in Aspen. But entertainment, insight, discussion, flowing wine, and true-blue cuisine at a chameleon restaurant that changes color nightly? That’s rich. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

Big Screens Short Films TWO TO 40 MINUTES, SIX DAYS... ALL AT ASPEN SHORTSFEST
Introducing the nominees for best documentary short at the Academy Awards in February, comedian Louis C.K. offered a brief, hilarious tribute to the short form and the artists who practice it. He called the Oscars for shorts “the one award that has the opportunity to change a life,” and bluntly characterized the humble circumstances from which most short films are born: “This Oscar’s going home in a Honda Civic.”

THE SHORT FILMS that have played here annually for 25 years at the Oscar-qualifying Aspen Shortsfest are a bastion of quality cinema — often bolder and better than most multiplex fare.
They’re made, for the most part, without hope for great commercial success or fame — emerging out of the simple need to tell a story, to share a voice, to entertain and to inform. As Louis C.K. pointed out, these documentaries, narratives and animated films are made with just about the purest artistic motivations you’ll find, living short creative lives with lucky festival audiences like those at Shortsfest. Some shorts, of course, do get bought by broadcasters (the 40-minute “Brillo Box,” playing Saturday, April 9, is slated for HBO; “The Shining Star of Losers Everywhere,” playing April 5, is headed for ESPN), and a few attract the international spotlight of the Academy Awards (last year’s Shortsfest entries “We Can’t Live Without Cosmos” and “Shok” were nominated and “Bear Story” won). And oftentimes, a night at Shortsfest gives audiences an early look at work from the next generation of great feature filmmakers — the likes of Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”) and Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air”) showed some of their first shorts here.
This year’s 25th anniversary Shortsfest lineup also includes some established directors (“Tangerine” director Sean Baker’s “Snowbird” plays Saturday, April 9) and some familiar faces (Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Artemis Pebdani in “Step 9,” for example) alongside film students and emerging writers, directors, actors and producers making movies running from 2 to 40 minutes. Local filmmaker Gayle Embrey’s “God Willing,” a documentary about Palestinian artist Mais Rosol, will screen during the 5:30 p.m. program on Wednesday, April 6. We’ve here selected some high points to look forward to at Shortsfest — you can also pick up The Aspen Times for daily coverage of more films and filmmakers throughout the festival.

This quirky and heartwarming 20-minute comedy by writer-director Aemilia Scott, making its world premiere in Aspen, follows Jane as she’s delivered some harsh, blunt, often hilarious truths from the guru she didn’t expect to find on the other end of the line. After this crystalline short film, you may walk out of the theater seeing the world with new eyes.

AS THEATRE ASPEN’S renowned for theatrics — from their stunning summer programming in the Hurst Theatre to their lively springtime gala at Hotel Jerome — guests can expect the entertainment to be all-time, every time. For its recent fundraising evening on March 5, they chose the theme of “Mamma Mia!” as it will be one of Theatre Aspen’s upcoming productions for its 33rd season this summer. For the gala celebration, a wild array of costumes came out of the closet for the over-thetop party in the Jerome’s Antler Bar and Ballroom with silent and live auctions, a
cocktail reception, dinner and dancing. Described by Theatre Aspen as a “sunny, funny tale, ‘Mamma Mia!’ unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. The storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship and should bring audiences to their dancing feet every night!” The musical, based on the songs of ABBA, will open June 24 and run in
repertory with the one-man comedy “Buyer and Cellar” and the musical “Dear Edwina” at the Hurst Theatre in Rio Grande Park. The Aspen Theatre Festival, which Theatre Aspen inaugurated last year, will return with showcases of new work at the end of August. Theatre Aspen is in casting now for the summer season. Executive artistic director Paige Price shared a sneak peak into the lineup, which looks like Jeffrey Correia, actress Sandy Duncan’s son, will return. Visit www.theatreaspen.org for tickets and more information.

BOOK REVIEW
‘FOOL ME ONCE’ HARLAN COBEN, MASTER OF THE SUBURBAN THRILLER, has written another compelling and twistfilled tale with “Fool Me Once.” Capt. Maya Stern has a rough time while deployed, and she comes home to news of her sister’s murder. Maya has a husband, Joe, and a young daughter named Lily. The couple is mugged while they are out one evening, and Joe is killed. Now Maya is a widow and a single mom. A concerned friend gives Maya a picture frame with a hidden camera for security purposes, but consistently checking the SD card on the video feed shows nothing more than Lily

Or did Joe fake his death? When Maya expresses concern about what she has seen on the SD card, the nanny’s reaction launches a spiral of doubt and paranoia in Maya’s life.
