POPULAR MUSIC THIS YEAR’S Jazz Aspen

Snowmass June Experience is a parade of music legends and a hit parade of their timeless songs. The annual music festival in the Benedict Music Tent kicks off Friday evening with Motown great Diana Ross — the queen diva, founding member of the Supremes and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner — playing the tent at 8:30 p.m. Opening up for the icon will be her talented daughter, Rhonda Ross. Saturday night brings pop songstress Sheryl Crow back to the tent for an 8:30 p.m. show. The nine-time Grammy winner and local favorite last played the festival in 2011. And Sunday night, in what Jazz Aspen founder Jim Horowitz calls “the sleeper show of the season,” genius jazz bassist Marcus Miller and Stax Records great Booker T. Jones offer an explosive double bill. The festival concludes with another Motown great, Smokey Robinson, in the tent July 2, in a concert co-presented with the Aspen Music Festival and School. Available tickets range from $35 general admission tickets for Sunday to $175 three-day passes. They’re on-sale at jazzaspensnowmass.com. And don’t forget: the free lawn party outside the tent runs all weekend. Pick up the Aspen Times for interviews, reviews and coverage throughout the June Experience.

Diana Ross will perform at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass June Experience on Friday.

CURRENTEVENTS THEATER

Thomas Jack will perform at Belly Up Aspen on Saturday.

Theatre Aspen opens its summer production of “Mamma Mia!” on June 28. Pictured here is a recent national tour of the hit Broadway musical.

WITH A CAST OF 20, a six-piece band and an intricate revolving set, Theatre Aspen’s summer production of “Mamma Mia!” promises to be a big fun slice of summer escapism in the company’s little riverside tent in Rio Grande Park. The crowd-pleasing, ABBA-fueled global hit musical opens Tuesday, June 28 with three preview performances running Friday and Saturday. It runs through Aug. 20 in the Hurst Theatre. Tickets are available at www.theatreaspen.org. Pick up the Weekend section of the Aspen Times on June 24 for more on the local production.

POPULAR MUSIC FOLLOWING A MUCH BUZZED-about Christmas week performance at Belly Up Aspen, it-DJ Thomas Jack returns to the club Saturday. The young Australian named and helped pioneer the “tropical house” electronic music sound, offering a more organic-sounding spin-off of house music with a sunny spirit that often incorporates classical guitar, steel drums and other traditional instrumentation. The story goes that Jack halfjokingly dubbed the sub-genre “tropical house,” but the name has stuck and made Jack one of the hottest DJs in the world.

Tickets range from $45 to $65. They’re available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com.

“LADIES FISHING PERMITS CAN BE SECURED NOW,” announced the Aspen Daily Times on June 8, 1939. “Fishing licenses for women are now on sale in Aspen at the office of the county clerk and at Cooper’s Book Store, and all women are now required by law to obtain a license to fish. The license for residents will cost $1 for the season. A non-resident female citizen may secure a permit good for ten days a cost of $1, or a license for the entire season for $3. Aliens must pay $3 for a license for any length of time. Game wardens will exercise leniency with women in regard to the new law requiring them to have a license, giving them plenty of time to conform to the new regulation. After a certain date, the women will be subject to the usual penalties for fishing without a license.” The photograph above shows Mary Loushin fishing in the Stillwater area of the Roaring Fork, circa 1940. FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

HEADS UP: FULL-COVERAGE CAP SUNSCREEN CAN BE A PAIN, but protection from solar exposure is not a matter to take lightly. If you spend time outdoors a good sun-protection plan is needed, from the head down. One product type I recommend comes from Outdoor Research. The Seattle-based company makes multiple built-for-outdoors brimmed caps equipped with capes. I first wore this style of hat during a desert crossing in 2006. More than a week of exposure in the sand-scape of eastern Utah was mitigated by a cap with a shadow-producing brim and a fabric flap on back. This summer, I employed a newer model, Outdoor Research’s ActiveIce Cap. It’s made for the mountains, glacial traverses, abovetreeline adventures and desert hikes. The thin fabric has a UPF 50+ rating and a generous cape. I applied sunscreen on a recent outing, including on my neck and face. But the cap, which costs $29, provided enough coverage that I did not feel a need to reapply during a half-day hike. Indeed, pulling the hat on, donning dark sunglasses and, as a final touch, applying lip balm, my whole head felt ensconced in a shadow, despite blaring sun overhead. It was in the low 80s, but I never overheated. The headband of the Outdoor Research hat sucks in sweat and helps wick it away. The company includes mesh on the sides for breathability. A bonus: The hat uses a special polyester with a treatment that gets cooler to the touch once you sweat; it’s a subtle effect, but it works. Finally, a great design feature is the hat’s split-style brim. The permanent crease in the brim lets you fold the hat in half and easily fit it in a pocket. Check out the ActiveIce Cap or similar caped offerings this summer. Your skin will thank you for the effort and extra care to keep the sun off your face and neck. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

WINEINK

SPARKLERS FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY: THINGS GO BETTER WITH BUBBLES

WITH THE FOURTH OF JULY coming in a couple of weeks, when someone says “sparklers” you likely think of those long, thin metallic fireworks that emit shiny sparks in the night when lit. These are, of course, fun and beautiful to watch, but they can be crazy dangerous. So, instead, think of sparklers in terms of sparkling wines. KELLY J. They too are beautiful, HAYES taste great and are much more mellow than holding a flaming stick of metal in your hand. Leave the fireworks to the professionals this year and get yourself some bubbles to celebrate Independence Day.

CHAMPAGNE Champagne is perhaps the world’s most famous wine. The effervescence of the bubbles and the creamy taste has made Champagne the official wine of celebration. And don’t forget, for much of the American Revolution the French were our allies as we sought our independence from the British. Vive la France! There are a few things you should know about Champagne. First, it can only be made in the Champagne region of France. And it must be produced from just three sanctioned grapes — Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, which also must be grown in the region. And it must be made using the Méthode Champenoise, the time honored technique for the production of Champagne. In the Méthode Champenoise, grapes are pressed gently with the juice separated from the skins to make still wines. The different wines are blended to the winemaker’s specifications before being placed in a bottle, where a shot of yeast and a shot of sugar are added to the blend. Once capped, the yeast and sugar begin to make magic as fermentation begins and carbon dioxide is formed. The wine will remain in the bottles for an extended period

of time, being turned with regularity until dead yeast eventually settles in the neck of the bottle. The wine bottles are then dipped into freezing brine to expel the yeast. This is called disgorgement. It is then corked and, ultimately, sent out into the world to play its special role in our special occasions. This is a hands-on and expensive process and, coupled with the price of land in Champagne and the image that has been created for the wines, accounts for the high price one pays for fine Champagne.

PROSECCO There are other places in the world that specialize in the production of sparkling wine and one of the best is northeastern Italy in the Veneto region. There, Italian winemakers use an indigenous grape called Glera to make sparkling wines that undergo a secondary fermentation in stainless steel tanks rather than in the bottles themselves. The process, known as the Charmat method, provides for a little greater control and is less expensive. In a twist, Zonin, the preeminent maker of Prosecco, recently has introduced a new line of limited release Prosecco under the “Dress Code” label. These wines take advantage of a change in the DOC, or Italian wine rules, that allows the use of up to 15 percent of the wine to be made from the juice of other grapes. There are three different Dress Code bottlings: a White Edition, which blends Glera with Pinot Bianco; a Grey Edition that includes a hit of Pinot Grigio; and a Dress Code Black Edition that combines Pinot Noir with the Glera. These unique cuvèes were created to provide interesting and differing flavor profiles to match and pair with both different foods and different moods. That is so Italian. Selling at just $17 a bottle, the Dress Code Collection is a great addition to your summertime sipping.

CAVA And then there are the Spanish. Their most famous sparkling wines come from the Penedès area in Catalonia, with a small village, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, being home to many of Spain’s largest production houses. With names like Freixenet and Codorniu, the production of sparkling wine is the main industry in this community not far from Barcelona. Unlike Champagne, Cava is produced from three native Spanish gapes varieties, Macabeu, Parellada and Xarello. But, like Champagne, the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle. This is referred to as the “Método Tradicional,” or Traditional Method. Despite this hands-on treatment, Cava is very inexpensive and a great value. There also is a move to improve the quality of Cava and just this month the CRDO del Cava (Cava Regulatory Board) announced a new category of Cava called Cava del Paraje, which provides a premium class designation for those wines that are produced from single estates. Try one...try them all. Summer is a time to sparkle. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE THE CHOOK NV SPARKLING SHIRAZ It is tough to find a bottle of what is an Australian specialty, the sparkling shiraz. But look hard enough, or travel south to Oz, and you might find a bottle of The Chook. Made from grapes grown in the South Australian wine region of McLaren Vale by the great Ben Riggs, this wine is rich, full-bodied and a touch spicy. But it is the bubbles that make it unique. An acquired taste to be sure, you’ll speak with an accent after sipping it.

AN AMERICAN OPTION Of course we make sparkling wines here in America as well. Napa and Sonoma have great house=s in California, and in Oregon Argyle makes some wonderful bubbles. But perhaps the most interesting American sparkling wine house is found in New Mexico. Gruet Winery, which recently partnered with Washington’s Precept wine group, is based outside of Albuquerque, and they have been making sparkling wines using the traditional Méthode Champenoise for a quarter of a century. Founded by French winemaker and patriarch Gilbert Gruet, and now operated by his son, winemaker Laurent Gruet, the Gruets make some the most affordable and most authentic sparkling wines outside of Champagne.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

OBSESSION PROGRESSION ONE NATION, UNITED BY FOOD

IT’S OVER. Another awesome Food & Wine Classic weekend has wrapped up and all we have to show for it are a bunch of broken wristbands, random booze swag and a kaleidoscope of Instagramworthy snapshots documenting whatever we ate and drank over the past few days. I recall one moment in the Grand Tasting tent Saturday AMANDA afternoon in front RAE of the black and blue Aria Resort & Casino Las Vegas booth. Chefs were doling out comically large squares of crème-brûlée French toast—wobbly golden custard with browned, crusty edges coated in caramelized sugar, each topped with a quenelle of vanilla bean mascarpone cream and a tiny tile of crunchy nut brittle. If you squinted, the massive slices rivaled the enormous hunks of bread pudding known to make grown men melt at Steakhouse No. 316. Such a confection might have been a welcome treat if split six ways after a feast of oysters Rockefeller, beef carpaccio, lobster tail and crab legs on the restaurant’s patio Sunday night (thanks, friends!). However, the Classic tasting tents host a swirling, manic, gastronomic free-for-all at which general admission guests have just 105 minutes to seek and destroy all available dishes (plus miniature bloody Marys, tequila-infused popsicles, rosé for days, shots of specialty spirits and shots of Victoria’s espresso to fortify the journey). To many, such a sizeable portion seems, as one taster commented amid the hordes of gluttons snatching plates from Aria, “Obscene.” At the same time, this rowdy, ridiculous atmosphere is precisely why we all go nuts during the Classic. Merrymaking reaches fever pitch, and it is glorious.

Wine might get some folks saucy, but it’s food that unites us all. “This has become our national obsession,” declared Nilou Motamed, the brand-new editor of Food & Wine Magazine, introducing a panel discussion on this very topic: America’s Obsession with Food. “Chefs are our new rock stars…where did it come from?” She turns the question to the panelist who “basically taught every one of us here how to cook,” the inimitable Jacques Pépin. The famed French chef, who got the crowd giggling when he told us he’ll be, “Ninety years old…in ten years!” began cooking professionally in 1949, as an apprentice at age 13. Before that, he helped his mother in her restaurant when he was just six or seven years old. “It is very, very different, and in some ways it is the same,” he said of the culinary world. “All of the chefs (in my life) were women. (My mother) had no refrigeration. Everything was organic, everything was local, that’s the way it was…now we do it by choice.” NBC correspondent and morning host Tamron Hall detailed the transformative power of food through personal history: Her father was the household chef, having learned the craft from her grandfather, an uneducated Texas sharecropper who became a barbecue pitmaster as a means to support his family. On a visit home after her father passed away, shortly after she joined the Today show, Hall was dismayed to find only a single cinnamon roll in her mom’s refrigerator. She decided to learn to cook so that she could pass on the skill. A large part of her education happened on air, while filming morning segments that became longer and more complex for home cooks who can’t seem to get enough. Learning to cook, quite

literally, “saved my family,” she says. The connective power of food is clear. “I can interview the vice president or president yet people will ask me: ‘Can you tell me that five-ingredient recipe?’” she says. “It is what connects us no matter what race, gender, geography.” Iron Chef competitor, San Francisco-based restaurateur and cookbook author Chris Consentino shared his struggle with dyslexia and near failure of high school, holding up two tattered copies of Pépin’s masterworks as evidence for how cooking “saved” his life. Food gave him purpose. Food is also a great equalizer. “Politics, legends, family fueds, as soon as the food hits the table, it’s done,” Consentino said. “It’s magic.” Food can mesmerize, indeed. Adds Hall: “How many times do you see someone and ask, ‘What did you have for lunch? What did you eat for dinner?’ Food is the connective tissue, the fiber, the fabric in a world designed to divide us.” Naturally, most conversations I

shared this weekend revolved around how decadent this dish was (elk skewers with gorgonzola compound butter at Aspen Chef ’s House with Susie Jimenez and Scott Leysath) or how divine that dish was (Cochon555 founder Brady Lowe’s braised short ribs over ramen noodles at Sunday brunch in Snowmass) or where we were going to eat and drink next. When pal Ashley Di Blasi of Niman Ranch raved about her Burning Man escapades—fittingly, she rolls with the Pickleback Mountain crew; they pass out brine shots and even haul a bucking-bronco-esque pickle carnival ride to their campsite— she focused on the epic feasts prepared by the food-industry peeps in her party. They go all out. Last year she cooked a hoisinginger-marinated pork loin sousvide to serve with Korean ramen and pickled egg—really, in Black Rock City. Call her obsessed. Likewise, I met #bikerbartender Nathan Churchill—a charming Philly dude riding cross-country on a cherry-red Ducati sportbike and guest-tending at bars in every

other city he visits, like a maniac— who was pouring for E&J Gallo in the tasting tent. I couldn’t help but grill him on the memorable meals he’s enjoyed in 18 states and 8,000-plus miles covered so far. Later, when I ask him to remind me of the place with the major-league lobster roll in Portland, Maine, he texts that (Eventide Oyster Co.) along with a list exactly 95 words long. Yep, he’s obsessed, too! What about Churchill’s food highlights in Aspen? “That’s tough cause I only got to eat at a couple of spots,” says the first-time visitor. “Grilled watermelon salad with goat cheese and balsamic vinaigrette (during the Balvenie luncheon) at Jimmy’s; French Dip at White House Tavern; and Duck Leg Confit at Rustique.” I’ve had all three of these dishes, so I share his enthusiasm. In fact, I’m tempted to run over to Restaurant Row right now to crush that sandwich for lunch… because I am obsessed! At a conference in Denver recently, I chatted with ousted Esquire editor David Granger. I mentioned I write a food column, and two other editors chimed in about the city’s bustling food scene. Granger’s contribution was an exasperated remark. “When will this food bubble burst?” he grumbled. Even his daughter is a chef, he told us. I let his whining slide. I was preparing for the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen—a food bubble within a bubble, maybe, but one that very well might be exempt from any potential popping. We’re all just too obsessed with it to let that happen. Amanda Rae had so much fun last weekend, thank you, Aspen! amandaraewashere@gmail.com

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Viceroy Snowmass executive chef Will Nolan hosted Sunday brunch outdoors at Base Village last weekend, carving up steak and slingin’ signature shrimp and grits; Breckenridge Distillery’s baby bloody Mary with pickled veggies and smoked salt; a mini bar tasting of gazpacho and smoked fish tartine bid adieu to chef Andreas Neufeld at La Crêperie du Village.

This year, cucumber vodka tempted my taste buds. Several booths in the Grand Tasting tent were serving up drinks made with this light, refreshing flavored vodka. And unlike other flavored vodkas (I am not generally a fan), the cucumber taste was in no way overwhleming. In fact, one libation tasted more like a spa water than a cocktail, which a friend and I determined is both a good and bad thing. Still, cucumber vodka is on my radar for the summer, and the first drink on my list to make is Prarie Organic Vodka’s Cucumber Mojito. Ideally we would like them to stay together but we will separate them. Great with everyone, including kids. Because they are scent hounds, they are not trustworthy off leash. Fenced-in yard a must.

ALLIE

Allie is a beautiful, athletic, 6-year-old Black Lab/Pit Bull mix who is happy, friendly, affectionate and energetic. She is awesome with all people, but she can behave aggressively towards cats and other dogs. Allie will thrive in a knowledgeable, responsible, active home. Been at shelter a long time.

ASPEN UNTUCKED

Sofia by Coppola: One of several Food & Wine standout drinks.

DRINKS THAT ARE HERE TO STAY THE PARTY MAY HAVE ENDED, BUT THE DRINKS ARE STILL COMING

I APOLOGIZE if I’m the one to break it to you, but the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen has ended for 2016. It’s always hard when one of the best parties of the year concludes and the endless parties, drinks and food do, in fact, end. What always peaks my interest once everyone rolls out of BARBARA town is what drink PLATTS companies actually have a presence here full time. I like to find those wines, mixes and fine liquors that have some staying power in the Roaring Fork Valley. Unfortunately, I was not able to try every single libation out there this past weekend. However, out of the ones I was able to sample, these few caught my eye.

SOFIA BY COPPOLA It’s not just that this company found a way to my heart via

18

blowouts and manicures at Salon Tullio to launch the weekend, though that did help. I’ve loved the Francis Ford Coppola wine selections for quite some time. The famous film director turned vintner has a large selection of reasonably priced reds that I pick up regularly in town. His Sofia label, which includes four different types of wine, is dedicated to his only daughter. All of them are quite tasty, but the one that seems to work best with the ever-active Aspen lifestyle is the mini. Filled with Sofia Blanc de Blancs, these puppies come in a cute hot pink 187 ml can, accessorized with a straw. Get them in the valley in a four pack that packs perfectly for your next weekend adventure or just for a casual Tuesday evening.

STONEYARD DISTILLERY RUMS I had the pleasure of meeting Max Vogelman, the master distiller of this Dotsero-based rum distillery. Vogelman, and his partner Jim Benson, have created

Jun e 23 - Jun e 29 , 2016

one of those quintessential Colorado craft distilleries, using local beet sugar and pure water from the Eagle River. The rum by itself is a force to be reckoned with, but their Lucky-Oh Horchata specialty drink is the one that caught my attention this past weekend. It has the taste of traditional Horchata with the backbone of Stoneyard’s rum. Add a nice grapefruit mixer (see below on what kind) or sip it straight…either way, it’s quite satisfying.

STRIPPED MIXES These all natural drink mixers are a solid base for any cocktail, whether it be a mojito, paloma, margarita or an amaretto sour... if you’re feeling particularly wild. Along with being a locally based company, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet the founders of the Stripped brand, Jenny Smith and Marty Swanson, who are just as lovely as their decadently crafted mixers. Whether you

pick one up at a grocery store for some home-style bar tending or you try it at a bar in town, you won’t be disappointed. The Food & Wine Classic has ended and we are onto our next event of the extremely busy Aspen summer. But in between the craziness, remember that we have several wonderful relaxants just at our fingertips. Whether they be local, regional or national tastes, they are well worth trying. Barbara Platts didn’t mean to start to only choose alcoholic-related beverages that started with S. She also recommends Hess Collection, AIX Rosé and Cigar Box Malbec. All are yum! VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | GIBRALTAR

by BRIAN WITTE for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GIBRALTAR: A HISTORIC PORT WITH MORE TO OFFER THAN MONKEYS BARBARY MACAQUE MONKEYS are the star attractions in Gibraltar. Still, this historic port town is steeped in military history around the landmark Rock of Gibraltar. The town wears its scars well with plenty to offer visitors who make the trip. The British territory next to Spain has a striking and unique landscape with sweeping views of Europe and Africa. Its long military history stems from being a strategic point between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient Greeks referred to the Rock as one of the two “Pillars of Hercules.” Britain acquired Gibraltar from Spain in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession. Spain has persistently sought its return ever since. The territory has lately been in the news: On June 16, British Prime Minister David Cameron made a brief visit, the first British prime minister to step foot in Gibraltar since 1968. Here are some highlights to take in during a visit.

BARBARY MACAQUES Europe’s only free-ranging monkeys are sure to enliven an afternoon enjoying the views from its famous Rock. While some regard

tourists calmly, others can be astute opportunists — eager to pounce and snatch items out of hands and bags. They were known as Barbary apes, but they are actually tailless monkeys. They are now found on Gibraltar, in Morocco and parts of Algeria, a region once known as the Barbary Coast. Visitors can reach them by a cable car up to the Rock, which includes a stop at the Apes’ Den. They have lived in Gibraltar since the British first captured the Rock in 1704 and have remained through many sieges. Folklore says the British will leave the Rock only when the monkeys do. During World War II, Winston Churchill ordered that their numbers not drop below 24. Warning: They have long canine teeth and can bite if disturbed.

THE TUNNELS Gibraltar features a labyrinth of tunnels more than 32 miles long that were built for military purposes. Some were dug by hand and gunpowder blasts during The Great Siege between 1779 and 1783, when France and Spain tried to recapture the Rock from the British during the American Revolutionary War. They were built to get guns to cover a vulnerable

Jun e 23 - Jun e 29 , 2016

spot off the northern face of the Rock of Gibraltar. Visitors can walk in the tunnels, which have cannons pointing out of openings in the rock. During World War II, the British added on to the tunnels out of concern Gibraltar would be attacked. These tunnels were built between 1939 and 1944 by the Royal Engineers. Tours are available.

THE MOORS The Moors occupied Gibraltar between 711 and 1309 and between 1350 and 1462. The Tower of Homage remains from an original castle complex that once stretched to the sea. The structure’s outside walls bear the scars of conflicts during the many sieges on the peninsula. The Gibraltar Museum, which provides a historical overview of the town, includes well-preserved Moorish baths in the museum basement. The baths were built in the 14th century.

ROCK HISTORY Beatle John Lennon married Yoko Ono at The Rock Hotel in Gibraltar in 1969. The line from “The Ballad of John and Yoko” goes, “You can get married in Gibraltar near Spain.”

GETTING THERE AND GETTING AROUND Gibraltar gets a number of visitors on port calls from cruise ships. You also can fly directly to Gibraltar from various British airports or walk or drive across the border from Spain. Malaga, Spain, is about 85 miles away. Most visitors get their sightseeing done on foot, but there are taxis.

ST. MICHAEL’S CAVE Gibraltar is home to a network of limestone caves in the town’s Upper Rock Nature Reserve. It’s used for concerts and plays.

GOATPACKING

“WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO for me is backpacking and hiking up high and along the ridges. I like knowing a beginning point and an end point, knowing the lay of the land and then connecting some of the lesser traveled trails in the backcountry. What would be cool to do is a backpacking trip from here to McClure Pass or, if we have enough time (more than just a weekend), we’ll make a goatpacking trip out of it and take our pack goats, Marko, Mulligan, Mo, Manny and Whitey with us. That always adds another layer of adventure! Hiking in the high country is the ultimate around here. It’s about getting away from people and busy trails. It’s about the views, the solitude, just being there. And bringing our kids along makes the adventures in our valley that much more fun and special. Their excitement and zest for explorations keeps them going even when the hiking seems to get really long for them. The excitement in the kids, let alone our own experience, is what makes the summers in our valley the ‘ultimate’ — every year.”

ANDA ROJS SMALLS, NATURALIST FIELD SCHOOL DIRECTOR AT ACES

WAKEBOARDING AT PAONIA RESERVOIR GREG FITZSIMMONS, CONTENT MARKETING MANAGER AT PROMO COMMUNICATIONS

“EVERY SUMMER skiing in August in Portillo is on my hit list. I just booked my ticket last weekend. There is big contingent of Aspen locals down there that create a small community, and trading flip flops for ski boots is awesome. But closer to home, for our family, every summer we log a ton of time at Paonia Reservoir. Our friends have a super rickety old RV. We call it ‘Stanley the RV,’ complete with bullhorns on the hood. We take Stanley up and over McClure Pass to Paonia Reservoir and go wakeboarding and wakesurfing, fishing and barbecuing. There is really, good glassy water there until early afternoon, and you can wakeboard for hours in the morning. Then, when the winds pick up, we swap wakeboards for surfboards and wakesurf through the afternoon. We try to get over there for at least one full moon cycle every summer when we get to surf on the reservoir illuminated by a full moon. At times yours is the only boat out on the water. You get that feeling that it’s your own personal lake. It’s an idyllic setup up in the Rockies.”

WEEK MOUNTAIN BIKING TO/FROM PETER ESTIN HUT MAX TAAM, 2015 U.S. SKIMO NATIONAL CHAMPION, BROKER ASSOCIATE AT STIRLING PEAK PROPERTIES AND ASPEN MOUNTAIN SKI PATROLLER “ONE THING I DID LAST SUMMER around the Fourth of July is mountain biked from Aspen, up and over Lenado to Larkspur, down Miller Creek, across the Fryingpan and up to the Peter Estin Hut where we spent the night. Then we rode down the Fryingpan and to Basalt. I like to explore new connections and look for new mountain bike routes, instead of the classic routes, and see where we can end up. The reason I like using the huts is because you can pack light — I take one sleeping bag for the two of us and then eat cous cous for dinner and oatmeal for breakfast. It doesn’t weigh very much. I love seeking out new adventures in the local mountains, and visiting mountains throughout the world. Recently I visited Colombia and Norway. ...”

LEARN TO SAIL “CAPTAIN KATIE” OESTRIKE CO-OWNER OF EPIC EVENTS OF ASPEN AND SKI INSTRUCTOR

“A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, there was a post on the Roaring Fork Swap Facebook page that said: ‘Old Sailboat for Sale, $250.’ So, I bought it. I don’t know how to sail, but I’m going to learn. My friend, a real estate agent, was cleaning out a client’s house in Redstone and helping his client, and old guy, sell a bunch of stuff. It was up in Redstone so I checked it out and took it with me because the trailer and lights worked. It’s a 1966 Flying Junior, and with it came all these random letters from the company to this original owner written in 1966. The biggest thing I miss in Aspen is water. I spend a lot of time out on the river rafting but I am looking for something more to do on the water. I don’t know anything about sailing but I used to do it when I was 12 at summer camp in Pennsylvania on one of those Sunfishes. Now that I have a boat it’s great. For now it doesn’t cost anything — you just need some wind. People keep asking ‘Where are you going to sail it? Where are you going to go?’ I’m going to take it out on July 4th weekend on Reudi, but I’ve already got people telling me it might be too much wind. For now I’m just going to go sail around there and hope it doesn’t sink.”

RUN WEST MAROON PASS TO CB (AND BACK) WEEK

MEAGHAN LYNCH, PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER, ASPEN SKIING CO.

WEEK

“I’M HOPING TO RUN FROM ASPEN TO CRESTED BUTTE and back this summer. There is a group of girls I run with, we call ourselves ‘The Columbines,’ and we do fun, long adventure runs about 10 to 20 miles on the weekends. Last year we ran out to Conundrum and are making plans for the Four Pass Loop this summer. We like to see how much ground we can cover. It’s great to have each other because those longer runs can be lonely, but with a group of great girls the laughs seem endless and the well-deserved beer at the end is shared with excellent company. Last year we had a picnic out at Conundrum, you know, with the limited amount of food we could carry in our running vests. The fact that on some of these big runs, you can find a group of five or six of us who are down for something like this is definitely a testament to the athletes in the valley. And there are so many trails around here we couldn’t be more fortunate — there is access literally out of our backyards.”

MOUNTAIN BIKE FROM ASPEN TO BASALT VIA THE ARBANEY-KITTLE TRAIL PAUL VIOLA – OWNER, KISSANE VIOLA DESIGN

“SOMETHING I WILL PROBABLY DO THIS SUMMER is bike the ArbaneyKittle Trail from Aspen to Basalt. It’s about 35 miles, and it’s definitely an all-day ride. There are a number of ways to do it. The official way is to bike up Smuggler to the Hunter Creek Valley, to Four Corners, Lenado and then up to Kobe Park which then hooks up to the Arbaney-Kittle trail and single track all the way down to Basalt. The end of that hooks up to the Rio Grande Trail and back to Aspen. That is the really legitimate way. Then there’s another option, riding up Chaparral Road. There is now an easement off of Chaparral Road for mountain biking. From my house in Woody Creek, I can ride up Chaparral and out towards Arbaney-Kittle from there. The easement is a little more direct but steeper. This route is becoming more and more popular. The Roaring Fork Mountain Biking Association has been doing a lot of trail work on it, maintaining it and making it more accessible. It’s an epic all-day ride.”

RUN THE CAPITOLAVALANCHE-HELL ROARING LOOP

WEEK

WILL FISHER – PASTOR, ST. PETER’S OF THE VALLEY EPISCOPAL CHURCH

“THIS SUMMER I will do the Capitol-AvalancheHell Roaring Loop again. It’s just as pretty and challenging as the Four Pass Loop, but not nearly as crowded. I did it last summer as a run, or you could do it as a two-night backpacking trip. At 26.2 miles and about 7,900 feet of evaluation gain, it has as much lung busting as the Four Pass Loop but you get a lot more solitude. Those considering doing it should definitely know it is serious wilderness. Fewer crowds also means if something goes wrong, it is less likely somebody is coming by to help. Especially high up in the Hell Roaring Basin, there is some route finding you have to do, the trail fades out and fades back in. There is a limited season for doing it, sometime after July 4 and before Oct. 1, or before the first big snowstorm of October. The advantages in early season is you are going to have amazing wildflowers and later in the season, gorgeous colors.”

RIDE THE SNOWMASS LOOP SCOTT CONDON, AN AVID MOUNTAIN BIKER, WRITES IN THE ASPEN TIMES’ PUBLICATION, “SUMMER IN ASPEN”:

SNOWMASS VILLAGE OFFICIALS are heavily promoting the Snowmass Loop, a 24-mile route that features some of the best singletrack trails in the Roaring Fork Valley. Park at the Rodeo Lot. From there, riders can get on the Ditch Trail in a few short minutes, then avoid pavement for hours. The route circumnavigates Snowmass Village on terrain that ranges from climbs in aspen forests to technical traverses across ski trails and exposed, near-desert terrain on sun-drenched southern slopes. Completing the entire loop requires linking several trails. The town’s summer 2016 trail map will make the route clear. While the town will promote the whole ride as a multi-hour, cross-country adventure, the beauty of it is the route can also be broken into chunks for visitors who don’t want to put in one mammoth day.

“Those considering doing it should definitely know it is serious wilderness. Fewer crowds also means if something goes wrong, it is less likely somebody is coming by to help.” – Will Fisher, on the Capitol-Avalanche-Hell Roaring Loop

WEEK HIKE THE TRAVERSE FROM SOPRIS TO CAPITOL STEVEN GOFF, PHOTOGRAPHER, SKI CONCIERGE AND JEEP GUIDE AT THE LITTLE NELL

WANT MORE?

“LAST SUMMER MY FRIEND AND I backpacked the Four Pass Loop, but this summer we are planning to revisit several of those passes, basins and lakes, including Capitol and Pierre Lakes, by choosing to hike along the high country that connects Mount Sopris to the Capitol massif and interconnecting Hell Roaring and Avalanche Creek Trails, ending in Redstone. We’ve always entered this area the traditional way by either the Maroon Bells area or Capitol Creek trailhead. The traverse from Sopris to Capital has always interested me and it’s something that neither of us has done. I love the high alpine lakes in this area, particularly Snowmass and Capitol and it’ll be fun to research some alternative routes to get there!”

WEEK FISH SNOWMASS LAKE

SCOTT SPOONER OF TAYLOR CREEK FLY SHOPS WRITES IN THE ASPEN TIMES PUBLICATION, “SUMMER IN ASPEN”: “SNOWMASS LAKE IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, but well worth the effort. Be sure to go early, as late afternoon storms are commonplace in the high country (this goes for all alpine lakes here in the valley). An 8-mile hike will bring you to a little-pressured fishery full of cutthroat, brook and rainbow trout.”

WEEK MAROON BELLS TRAVERSE

So these 11 outdoor adventures are awesome. But what’s that you say? You want more? Thankfully, Aspen delivers. Pick up a copy of The Aspen Times’ “Summer in Aspen” magazine to read more about how to explore the Aspen landscape on foot and by bike, in the air and on the water ... and a whole lot more. Says editor Lauren Glendenning, “Whatever you choose, Aspen won’t disappoint you this summer. Let this magazine serve as your guide to all things summer. We hope you’ll use it as inspiration — whether you’re interested in a new mountain-biking trail, a fun fishing spot, live music out on the town or anything between, we’ve got you covered.” ,

TIM POWER SMITH, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT THE ASPEN CLUB “AN ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL for the serious mountaineer is the Bells Traverse. Ascending South Maroon and traversing over to North Maroon. It is a long day but a must do. Some Class 3 and 4 with some committing class 5 moves. You want to be in great condition, not only in technical climbing but confident in route finding, rock climbing, very comfortable with exposure, heights and bouldering. It’s one of those very committing climbs and a humbling experience, to be out in that big country and have so much exposure. You realize how important it is to be careful and knowledgeable and respectful of trail route finding, each and every handhold and every step because you don’t know if you’re going to fall or not. It makes you respect the land out here.”

ANOTHER FABULOUS FOOD & WINE CLASSIC

MAY SELBY

THE 34TH ANNUAL FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen may have been my favorite – and not just because 34’s my lucky number. Let’s start with the weather – brilliant blue skies and verdant hillsides set the backdrop, and while it may have hot, it was on brand for the Southern-themed dinners atop Aspen Mountain – Friday night’s Publisher’s Party, which channeled Charleston, South Carolina, and Saturday’s Blackberry Farm dinner with the celebrated resort’s chefs.

Food & Wine introduced its new editor Nilou Motamed whose debut issue is currently out, covering the best new chefs and more. With far too many parties, pop-ups and personalities to mention, I’ll simply list off some of my number ones: ACRA’s membership lunch at Hotel Jerome, Constellation Wines’ reception at Casa Tua, Swirl Girl Denver’s Yacht Rock at The Sky, Tim Hutchins’ pork party on Waters Ave., Dancing Bear’s rooftop kick-off with Aspen Magazine, Aspen Kitchen’s late night party

with Aspen Peak, the Patron Party at Nello Alpine, and Infinite Monkey Theorem’s Wine at the Mine for the fifth time! Contact May with insights, invites or info: allthewaymaymay@hotmail.com

SELF, LAND & ENRIQUE MARTINEZ CELAYA PAINTER RETURNS TO BALDWIN GALLERY AND ANDERSON RANCH

PAINTER ENRIQUE MARTINEZ CELAYA has long been a familiar face in these parts. The Los Angeles-based artist has been visiting Anderson Ranch for more than a decade as a teacher, artist advisor and boardmember. Last year he published “On Art and Mindfulness: Notes From Anderson Ranch” — a luminous collection of thoughts on living as an artist. He’s back on the ranch for a few weeks now, teaching an advanced painting class, mentoring artists, offering a public lecture (June 30) and the public workshop “Alternatives” (July 2) while he’s here. Since 1997 Celaya also has shown his work regularly at Aspen’s Baldwin Gallery, where his exhibition “Self and Land” will be on view Thursday through Friday. Celaya, 52, often grapples with the collisions between man and nature in his work, often using literature and philosophy as a touchstone (science makes its way in occasionally as well: Celaya studied applied physics at Cornell University and began doctoral studies in quantum electronics before pursuing art). “Self and Land” juxtaposes portraits of figures like Edvard Munch and Ernest Hemingway against depictions of nature. “This is my first exhibition of things that can be thought of as portraits,” Celaya says. “Though I myself think of them not really as portraits. They’re studies or considerations of the human condition, of people whose work I’m interested in and admire.” Making them over the past year, Celaya didn’t work from photographs of his subjects, but instead based his work on his memory of images he’s seen of them. More importantly, he studied their lives and their work — hoping to find in his paintings something more than a physical semblance of his subjects. “That’s the point,” he explains. “Portraiture is not the goal here.” The “land” part of “Self and Land” provides a counterpoint to that humanity. “There’s something about figures of people that can stress too much the presence of the individual,” he says. “I wanted to emphasize the transitory nature of our human experience.” The Baldwin Gallery show is one of two parts — the other, “Self and Sea,”

32

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

which opened last month at London’s Parafin, juxtaposes similar portraits against images of the sea. Likewise, the subjects there are thinkers and artists whose work is of personal importance to Celaya. “These are people who I have a deep relationship with their work and have thought about how their work intersects with their life,” he says. Though best known as a painter, Celaya also has worked in sculpture and immersive installation. His rambunctious mind doesn’t allowed him to settle into a predictable style — the past year or so has seen him investigating portraiture in an impressionistic style, but the next project isn’t likely to look much like “Self and Land” or “Self and Sea.” “It becomes self-contained investigation — the next thing has nothing to do with it,” he says. “There’s an immediacy to it. I’m not an artist with a certain branding from work to work.” Celaya also teaches at Dartmouth College, but Anderson Ranch has

become something like a summer artistic home for the Cuba-born painter. “There’s no place like the ranch,” he says. “It allows for artists — any kind of artists — to be involved in the making. And that includes people who are just starting out and people who are really experienced. People who can come there and fail.” Celaya is particularly excited about his upcoming public workshop, titled “Alternatives.” Unlike his other classes (and most with artists of his caliber) it is open for pubic registration and doesn’t require a portfolio review or any of the usual barriers to entry. He is hoping that locals and visitors who are simply curious about the artistic process will come out. “It’s not intended only for people in the arts, but looking at different ways of being in the world,” he says. “And that’s open to anyone, not just artists.” The workshop, he suggested, is the kind of open-minded exploratory program that’s drawn him to Anderson Ranch, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. “I think there’s a tendency in the art world and in academia for artists to be very jaded — everybody feels like they know everything,” he says. “One of the great things about the Ranch

is that people go there with a lot of excitement, not jaded in that way. And they go because they love it. That makes the ranch a very special place.” atravers@aspentimes.com

Please direct all pleadings and correspondence in this case to the Co-Applicants’ attorneys. Decreed Water Rights for Which Correction is Sought: Name of Structure: Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 1. Original Decree: Entered on August 25, 1936 in Civil Action No. 3082, Garfield County District Court. Legal Description as Described in Most Recent Decree: The headgate is located on the west bank of Otto Creek at a point lying approx. 1576 feet and bearing approx. North 40º East of the south quarter corner of Section 6, Township 8 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P.M. Source of Water: Otto Creek. Appropriation Date: May 1, 1907. Amount: 0.38 c.f.s., absolute. Use: Irrigation. Name of Structure: Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 2. Original Decree: Entered on August 25, 1936 in Civil Action No. 3082, Garfield County District Court. Legal Description as Described in Most Recent Decree: The headgate is located on the east bank of Otto Creek at a point lying approx. 1188 feet and bearing approx. North 47º East of the south quarter corner of Section 6, Township 8 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P.M. Source of Water: Otto Creek. Appropriation Date: May 1, 1907. Amount: 1.69 c.f.s., absolute. Use: Irrigation. Remarks: Co-Applicant Arch Angel 2003 Trust owns the Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 1, which is located on and used to irrigate Parcel 4 of the Otto Creek Subdivision. CoApplicants Alfred W. Gardner, Jr. and Pittco Farms collectively own the Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 2, the headgate of which is located on Parcel 3 and which is used to irrigate Parcels 1, 2, and 3 of the Otto Creek Subdivision. Detailed Description of Proposed Correction of Established But Erroneously Described Points of Diversion: Following is a complete statement of the basis for correction of the established but erroneously described points of diversion pursuant to C.R.S. § 37-92-305(3.6): Headgates Not Located at Decreed Locations. The Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2 were both decreed absolute in 1936. As stated in their decrees, the headgates of the ditches were decreed to be located on the banks of Otto Creek. See decrees for Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2, filed with the application. However, as shown on the location map prepared by Applicants’ engineers and filed with the application, neither decreed location is on or within 500 feet of Otto Creek. The actual locations of the Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2 points of diversion are on Otto Creek in the locations shown on Figure 1. Their actual locations are each more than 500 feet from their decreed locations. See Figure 1. Headgates at Same Physical Location. The subject ditches and the lands on which their headgates are located have been in Co-Applicant Gardner’s family from 1969 through current (as to Ditch No. 2) and until 2016 (as to Ditch No. 1). See Affidavit of Alfred W. Gardner, Jr., filed with the application. For so long as Co-Applicant Gardner can remember, the actual points of diversion of the Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2 have been physically located at the points depicted on Figure 1, and they were never moved during such time. Additionally, descriptions in the original decrees locating the ditch headgates on the banks of Otto Creek, versus their decreed locations far away from Otto Creek, support the Applicants’ belief that they have been in the same physical location on Otto Creek since the time they were decreed. Intent to Divert Pursuant to Decrees. The Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 1 has historically, and continues to divert water from Otto Creek at the “Actual Location” identified on Figure 1 to irrigate Parcel 4 of the Otto Creek Subdivision. Likewise, the Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 2 has historically, and continues to divert water from Otto Creek at the “Actual Location” identified on Figure 1 to irrigate Parcels 1, 2, and 3 of the Otto Creek Subdivision. Such diversions of water at the ditches were intended to be made pursuant to their decrees. In fact, information that the decreed points of diversion for the Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2 are described as being at a location inconsistent with the actual physical location of the headgates was only recently discovered as part of the 2016 sale of Parcel No. 4. Legal Descriptions of Corrected Points of Diversion: Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 1: Located in the NW ¼ of the SE ¼ of Section 6, Township 8 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P.M. at a point approximately 1470 feet from the South Section Line and 2355 feet from the East Section line of Section 6. UTM X= 334191 meters, UTM Y = 4361190 meters, Zone 13N. Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 2: Located in the SW ¼ of the SE ¼ of Section 6, Township 8 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P.M. at a point approximately 1060 feet from the South Section Line and 2300 feet from the East Section line of Section 6. UTM X= 334205 meters, UTM Y = 4361065 meters, Zone 13N. Names and addresses of owners or reputed owners of the land upon which any new diversion or storage structure, or modification to any existing diversion or storage structure is or will be constructed or upon which water is or will be stored, including any modification to the existing storage pool: Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 1: Co-Applicant, Arch Angel 2003 Trust. Frances Nisbet Ditch No. 2: Co-Applicant, Alfred W. Gardner, Jr. Wherefore, the Co-Applicants respectfully request the Court to issue a decree correcting the established but erroneously described points of diversion for the Frances Nisbet Ditch Nos. 1 and 2. YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED THAT YOU HAVE until the last day of JULY 2016 to file with the Water Clerk a verified Statement of Opposition setting forth facts as to why this application should not be granted or why it should be granted in part or on certain conditions. A copy of such statement of opposition must also be served upon the applicant or the applicant’s attorney and an affidavit or certificate of such service shall be filed with the Water Clerk, as prescribed by Rule 5, CRCP. BOOK REVIEW

‘THE WESTERN LONESOME SOCIETY’ DON’T BE FOOLED by the length of Robert Garner McBrearty’s debut novella — at a mere 124 pages, The Western Lonesome Society includes enough intrigue to fill books twice its size. Characters battle mental illness, kidnappings and Comanches to find their way home after wandering across the wild and lonely American Southwest. Full of lost souls, this absurdist Western thriller (perhaps the only one of its kind) is a trip through the human subconscious, alternating between three increasingly peculiar storylines. Anchoring it all is Jim O’Brien, a professor obsessed with committing his family history to paper. Two of his ancestors were abducted by Native Americans during a raid on their Texas cabin in 1870; Jim finds connection in the fact that he also was kidnapped as a child. All the characters, especially Jim, grope for purpose. But the professor’s vapid journal entries: “Spent night at by TRACY BENNETT / edited by WILL SHORTZ

Mesa Verde … Saw big wild turkey. Had fun playing football with boys,” suggest that he realizes the futility of his quest for greater meaning. And somehow, that is freeing — absurdism in miniature. Chapters alternate between the kidnapped brothers’ adventures in the 19th century, “Old West” part of the plotline, Jim’s own tale and a third short story involving an escaped mental patient who moonlights as a stripper. In less capable hands, the literary device known as mise en abyme — images within images or stories within stories — can quickly become incomprehensible, but McBrearty cut his teeth on crafting short stories for the North American Review and StoryQuarterly, among other publications. His taut narratives are composed with precision and spare imagery. (Don’t expect any grand descriptions of the Texas frontier; the closest contender is a riff on the seedy strip-club-lined underbelly of Austin.)

That said, this is the kind of book that will attract fierce loyalists but leave others scratching their heads. So, caveat lector: Though entertaining, the narrative requires intense concentration. As the book accelerates to its conclusion, the stories — vignettes, really — become more bizarre, forcing the reader to decide what is real and what are the ramblings of a delusional professor. “We’ve all been taken — taken from our true home and it’s only a matter of getting back there!” Jim exclaims to his imaginary therapist. As long as the reader willingly suspends any expectation of realism, The Western Lonesome Society is a fascinating, hallucinatory trip down memory lane.

GWEEK THE

Sammy is a 12 years young Miniature Poodle who weighs 12 pounds. He gets along with dogs and we assume cats He is pretty healthy for his age and active - no laying around for Sammy. He will need a quieter home with no children - who can blame him - he wants peace in his golden years! If you know poodles, he is smart and needs someone who will be his leader otherwise he will rule the roost - all 12 pounds of him. Once he knows his place he is the sweetest and loves his human and does not leave your side. He is housetrained and knows how to use a doggie door.
