FESTIVAL THE REBORN ASPEN DEAF CAMP PICNIC

returns for its second year in Snowmass Village this weekend, with music running Friday, July 18 through Saturday, July 18. The festival’s performances in the 1970s and ’80s — including sets with the likes of John Denver and Jimmy Buffet sharing the stage — are the stuff of local legend. Organizers brought it back last year, after a 16-year hiatus that followed Denver’s death. A fundraiser for the Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Base Village event is free — though donations are encouraged — and includes a lineup of musicians who played the original run of picnics alongside newer bands. It opens Friday evening with performances by Rich Ganson, members of John Denver’s band performing a tribute, and The Freddy Jones Band. Saturday’s lineup includes what promises to be a memorable performance by Aspen music icons Starwood. The popular ‘70s rock band, who reunited for last year’s Deaf Camp Picnic, will get together again for a 5:30 p.m. performance. The set will include a wedding between Starwood front man Bobby Mason and girlfriend Jane LaBelle. The mid-song ceremony, performed by Rev. Gregg Anderson, will be a tough act to top on Saturday, when the lineup also includes Americana trio Red Molly (4 p.m.) and an encore show by John Denver’s band performing his songs (7:30 p.m.). A silent auction, benefitting the Deaf Camp, also runs through the weekend. And if two days of music isn’t enough for you, just up the mountain, on Fanny Hill, bluegrass Hot Buttered Rum plays a free show on Thursday night at 6:15. More info at www.aspencamp.org

CURRENTEVENTS SPEAKER

Groundbreaking civil righs leader John Lewis speaks Friday at the Aspen Institute. Alvin Risk brings his spin on electric music to Belly Up Aspen on Thursday.

POPULAR MUSIC JOHN LEWIS, THE 14-TERM CONGRESSMAN and groundbreaking civil rights leader, returns to Aspen on Friday, July 18, for the Aspen Institute’s McCloskey Speaker Series. Lewis, 74, is the last living speaker from the historic 1963 March on Washington. Earlier this month the civil rights icon spoke on the Institute campus at the Aspen Ideas Festival, reflecting on his decades on the front lines of the movement and his new graphic memoir trilogy, “March.” Tickets for Friday evening’s hour-long event are $20 and available at www.aspenshowtix.com.

ALVIN RISK APPEARS POISED for electronic music super stardom, and his Aspen show this week seems like one of those that you might be bragging about in a few years, when he’s headlining festivals and Las Vegas clubs. This spring, the Washington, D.C.-based dubstep/house DJ’s crowd-pleasing collaboration with Skrillex, “Try It Out,” became a club staple, and offered a taste of what you can expect from his first full-length album — due out this fall — and from his show at Belly Up on Thursday, July 17. Risk’s set is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. Tickets and more information at www.bellyupaspen.com

Jul y 17 - Jul y 23, 2014

OK, LET ME GET this right. I’m I supposed to “BE the fly” or “BE the fish”? If I’m the fly, I rightly should be evading the fish like a buffalo shying away from a mounted Cheyenne brave, shouldn’t I? OK, I’ll just be the fish, and pretend I’m so hungry I could eat a … well, a tiny thing that looks kind of like a bug but has this sharp hook curving out of the middle of it. Right? And so it began, my reintroduction last weekend into the glorious art of fly-fishing, something I had first known some time before but had forgotten, or ignored, or something, for years. There I was, standing thigh-deep in the middle of a rushing river and trying desperately to remember the mantra: “Ten and two, ten and two, ten and two, keep the rod moving between those two positions of the clock. Never drop the end of the rod toward the water, keep the waving tip as straight forward and back as possible, release at 10 and ‘mend’ the line if the fly looks OK in its drift downstream …” Crikey, there’s a lot to remember, and there’s always the possibility a fish will strike. That’s when you’ll have to remember to wait a second or two before yanking on the line to set the hook, then reel the line in as the fish fights for freedom. I suppose I should explain here that I first took up fly-fishing back in the mid-1990s, encouraged by a friend who had been doing it so long it was second nature to him, and who figured I’d reach that level of sophistication and ability right away. Well, he was wrong. Or, not wrong, exactly, but not right, either. We fished together for a couple of years, intermittently, until he moved out of the valley, and I put down my fly rod for a decade and a half. I had never felt the excitement, the surging satisfaction, of hooking a big fish and landing it, you see. I had caught small fry in high alpine lakes, immature trout lazing away their lives in the pools behind beaver dams, even a brookie or two while fishing alone on a creek nestled in a narrow valley not far below the tree line. But never a big one. And that, somehow, disappointed me, discouraged me, so I gave it up.

Which was odd, since I had long told my fishing buddy and my wife that I didn’t really mind not catching fish. What it was that I deeply enjoyed, I told them, was the solitude, the calm, the forgetfulness that came over me as I moved slowly in the rushing water, as I critically observed my form in casting and retrieving the line, as I tried to learn to read the river, the riffles, the deep places underneath the overhanging brush along the bank, to find where the fish liked to lurk and feed and to cast the fly right where I thought they should be. And all that was true. The enjoyment I felt, the blessed peace and quiet of just being there, was enough for me. Still, when my fishing buddy moved away, I gave it up. Until last weekend, when my oldest friend in the world came for a visit, bearing with him a veritable treasure trove of gear, ability and memories of this sport. Jim and his wife, Michelle, had taken a road trip from Madison, Wisc. to visit us for a few days, driving an aging RV the long way around through Missouri, Oklahoma and New Mexico before heading up into the Colorado Rockies and the BRB Campground a few miles up the Crystal River from Carbondale. And high on the agenda of this trip was Jim’s determination to get me on the river again, which he did, and for which I’ve thanked him about a thousand times since the first hours we spent harassing the browns, rainbows and other denizens of the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan rivers. I still haven’t caught the big one, though I did have a couple of momentary thrills, in different spots, when what seemed to be about a 12-inch trout chomped on my midsized mayfly and then spat it out before I could regain my presence of mind enough to set the damned hook. But the fact is, I’m the one who is hooked now, not the fish. And that’s OK, because in three days of intensive river treatment (it’s kind of like mental health therapy) I know, again, the inner peace to be gained by simply being there, being aware, and being quiet while stalking the mighty trout.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

WPA funding helped the Aspen Ski Club construct a ski jump so regional and national championships could be held in Aspen.

DEPRESSION STIMULUS PUT MEN TO WORK AROUND ASPEN Federal efforts put men back to work during the Depression.

Building the San Francisco Bay Bridge, plus the Hoover and Grand Coulee dams, produced short- and long-term benefits. Although federally funded projects in Aspen were of a much smaller scale, their long-term benefits are still felt today. As one of his early executive orders in 1934, Roosevelt remonetized silver. He also established its value — the price paid by U.S. mints — at $10.53 an ounce in today’s dollars. That increase from $7 per ounce (three times the bottomed-out price of 1929) revitalized mining all over the West and enabled Aspen’s mines to double the number of daily shifts. A few years later Congress took additional steps to protect the value of silver by passing tariffs that set the value closer to $12.30. My grandfather was mayor and he joined local mining engineer Ben Koby, who owned Aspen’s largest mercantile store, and D.P. Rohlfing, in actively lobbying Congress and the administration to remonetize silver. In addition, Mayor Willoughby, the city council, the county commissioners, the Lion’s Club, and the Aspen Ski Club joined forces to apply for project grants

10

F

that were being made available through the Works Progress Administration. Although an application for a grant to build a community center was rejected, a roadwork project received funding. The city resurfaced all of Aspen’s streets. They added 3 inches of smelter slag, mine dump material, and gravel to cover what had been a muddy and rocky surface. The Bureau of Reclamation project to divert water to the eastern slope employed many men for several years. Plenty of labor was required to bore a 4-mile long tunnel through the mountain. In hopes that they could access an additional Bureau project to the area, Aspen joined the Western Users League — mostly orchard owners and farmers around Grand Junction — to talk up a storage dam east of town for Western Slope water uses, but that idea was not funded.

Jul y 17 - Jul y 23, 2014

The Civil Conservation Corps, CCC, employed eight Pitkin County youth, by quota. Young men from a CCC camp on the Frying Pan worked on projects around Aspen. The CCC took out poison hemlock, fatal to cattle, along Woody Creek. They also put up telephone poles for a line up Woody Creek to the Forest Service ranger station. In the largest local CCC project, workers planted 25,000 trees at the upper end of Independence Pass. The longest-lasting results of Depression stimulus spending formed the foundation of Aspen’s recreational infrastructure. A WPA grand helped the Aspen Ski Club finish construction of a ski jump and other projects that enabled them to host the regional ski championships in 1938 and 1939, plus the national championships in 1941. The championships put Aspen on the national ski map. The Forest Service secured

funding that put men to work on road and campground projects. The road to, and campsite for, Maroon Lake was completed in 1936. The Difficult campsite was constructed that same year, and a section of the Castle Creek road that enabled easy car traffic to Ashcroft was also completed with that funding. Even today conservatives, for whom Roosevelt was the arch-demon, argue that federal Depression spending was wasted. Those who lived in Aspen during those dark times roll over in their graves each time they hear such twaddle. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@ comcast.net.

The company, based in Olympic Valley, Calif., has a simple tagline of “belts that stretch.” Indeed, the nylon is elasticized and it feels much like a suspenders strap. They do the basic job of keeping your pants up and cinched tight, though because of the stretch the belts offer adequate give when you reach, bend over, bike, climb or hike. My Arcade belt has lived mainly on a pair of casual biking shorts that are a smidge too large in the waist. I keep the belt in place on the shorts, including when they go through the wash.

The company lists “washer/dryer friendly” as one of its sales points, in addition to calling the belts “more comfortable and more durable” than the common leather strap. Starting at $24, the belts are a fair deal. Arcade offers a couple of dozen designs, from flamboyant to subdued. (I wear a matte-black belt on the bike shorts that doesn’t draw attention.) In addition to the stretch, the custom plastic clasp is comfortable and never comes undone. You adjust the belt by moving the strapping through the buckle for a precise fit. Beyond casual or everyday wear, you can use these belts while backpacking, hiking, skiing, and climbing. They work on shorts, jeans or snowpants. A downside is that the thin strapping will not support knife sheaths or other add-ons like a traditional leather belt can. Arcade sells its belts at ski shops and outdoor retailers, as well as online at Arcadebelts.com. Try one of these stretchy belts on if you’re looking for something different from the old-school fit. WINEINK

THE PRICE OF WINE THIS PAST SATURDAY evening, I opened a bottle of the 2011 “The Stump Jump,” an affordable and eminently quaffable GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) made by Chester Osborn at his d’Arenberg winery in Australia’s McLaren Vale. You can find it all over the valley, this valley, and it is a great everyday wine. KELLY J. Not only did it pair HAYES perfectly with grilled St. Louis ribs and eggplant (and the rainy Tour De France 8th Stage), but it also made me do that thing that I really like to do when I drink a wine. It made me think. You see, I paid just $14.97 for the bottle at Four Dogs Fine Wine and Spirits in Basalt. “So,” I thought to myself, “how is it possible to produce a wine this good, bottle it, ship it halfway across the world, and sell it all for less than $15?” It should be noted that Chester Osborn is one of my very favorite winemakers. He is a regular here at the Food & Wine Classic, and this year I spent some time with him, including a great moment where we saw the Movia Puro sparkling wine opened under water, but

14

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

Jul y 17 - Jul y 23, 2014

that’s another story. Given both the quality of wine, and the logistics needed for getting it from South Australia to my home in the hills of Aspen, I began to ponder how many hands were involved and how many different people got a tiny piece of the $15 I spent on my 2011 “The Stump Jump.” Every bottle of wine is born in dirt. The land where the grapes are grown represent the first and, in many cases, the single most expensive element in a wine. While land costs in the McLaren Vale don’t approach those of, say, the Napa Valley or the Burgundy region of France, they are still considerable. And purchasing prime grape growing properties usually requires the services of lawyers, bankers and such. All cost money before a vine is planted. Then there are the vines themselves. Rootstock bought from one place, clones from another. And before they are planted, laborers must clear and tend the soils where the wines eventually will live. All that is bought and paid for before a single bud breaks. And as a rule of thumb, one must wait three years — maintaining the vines and tending the soils — before the grapes begin to be

useful, five years before they are producing fully. Once the grapes get to the stage where they are ready to be harvested and made into wine, you need a crew of qualified people to do just that. People to pick and prune, then sort and separate the grapes. And you need a winemaker. And tanks and barrels. The Stump Jump spends time in old, or used, French oak barrels which, when new, cost from $650 to $800 each. Next you need bottles and, in the case of “The Stump Jump,” a screw-cap closure. And you need a label, one that will capture in a glance what the wine’s personality is. To do that, you need a designer. By the way, “The Stump Jump” name does not refer to a mountain bike as many in these parts assume, but rather pays homage to a type of tractor invented in Australia that clears a field while “jumping” stumps. So let’s assume that you have run the gauntlet and you have produced a wine worthy of selling. Now the hard part begins. You need to determine who will buy the wine and develop a marketing plan. Perhaps you’ll hire a public relations or advertising agency. If you are going to export the wine to America as Chester

does, you need to contract with an importer and a distributor, in this case Old Bridge Cellars, the fine California-based importer of Australian wines. Next, you need to get the wine to the people who will actually buy it in the States in good condition. That means shipping it 8,900 miles from Adelaide, Australia, to Aspen, Colorado, by sea and land — and never exposed to too much heat or too much cold as it travels from one hemisphere to the next. Congratulations, you’ve done all that and someone like me walks into a liquor store in Colorado, pulls out a $20 bill, pays for the bottle and some taxes to the feds and buys the wine. And all you get is around 10 bucks for your bottle. That’s right, the retailer gets around 30 percent of the total sales price. Ouch. Again, I ask the question: “How is it possible?” The answer must be the punch line to that old joke: “We make it up in volume.” More power to Chester.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

FEELING BLUE? 10 FRESH WAYS TO USE FRESH BLUEBERRIES MAKE IT

THERE ARE MUFFINS, OF course. And pancakes. And the obligatory fruit salad. But then what? After all the usual suspects, how do you handle a seasonal abundance of blueberries? As long as you’re willing to consider a few fresh approaches, it’s actually easy and delicious to press them into service. Start by ditching the idea that they only work in sweets. The juicy, slightly acidic berries work wonders with meat. In fact, the Native Americans used blueberries to season dried meats. But first, a few storage tips. Blueberries keep best when stored dry. In other words, wash them only as you use them. Until then, keep them lightly covered and refrigerated. If you freeze them, the flavor will be fine, but the texture will be different. So once frozen, it’s best to use them only in recipes that involve cooking them. To freeze blueberries, wash them, then spread them on a rimmed baking sheet. Gently dry them with paper towels, then freeze them in a single layer on the baking sheet. Once frozen, the berries can be bagged.

10 FRESH WAYS WITH FRESH BLUEBERRIES:

• Vinaigrette: Add a handful of blueberries to a blender with a 3:1 ratio of oil and vinegar (balsamic or red wine would be good), as well as a hit of salt and pepper. Blend until mostly smooth. • Sweet and chilly snack: Follow the method above for freezing, but instead of drying the washed berries, roll them in coarse sugar, then freeze. Eat them as is for a sweet treat. • Compote: Saute 1 finely diced yellow onion in a bit of butter. Add 1 cup blueberries, a bit of grated fresh ginger and a splash of hot sauce. Simmer until the berries pop, reduce and begin to thicken. Season with ample black pepper and a pinch of salt and ground cumin. Spoon over grilled pork chops or pork tenderloin.

Looking for ways to jazz up your basic fruit salad this summer? Consider giving it a hit from the savory side of the food world. It’s not something we often think of, but ingredients we generally consider savory or spicy can provide a delicious contrast when added to a sweet and juicy fruit salad. Where to start? Something as simple as thinly sliced fresh basil adds a peppery bite to a salad of strawberries, watermelon and grapes. For even more bite, consider adding very thinly sliced jalapeno peppers. The best way to do this is to slice a fresh pepper in half, scrape out the seeds and ribs, then use a mandoline to slice the chili paper-thin. Mix into the salad for a great sweet-and-heat blend. And no matter what savory element you add, make sure to also add a pinch of salt. It won’t make the salad tasty salty, but it will highlight the natural sweetness of the fruit.

• Creamed: Mound fresh berries in a bowl, then drizzle with heavy cream. Follow that by a drizzle of maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon. • Cordial: Bring 1 cup of blueberries and 1/2 cup of sugar to a simmer and cook until the berries are broken down and thickened. Strain through a mesh strainer, discarding any solids. Divide the mixture between 4 tumblers. Add ice, then top with vodka or gin. • Grain salad: Toss fresh blueberries with cooked and cooled quinoa or farro, diced cucumber, fresh mint and minced red onion. Drizzle with a lemon vinaigrette and top with slivered almonds. • Cornbread: Add blueberries to your favorite savory cornbread recipe.

Jul y 17 - Jul y 23, 2014

• Spread: Mix together 1/4 cup slightly mashed blueberries, chopped scallions and about 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Use as a sandwich spread for a grilled chicken wrap. • Salsa: In a processor, finely mince 1 red onion, 1 jalapeno pepper and a handful of fresh cilantro. Add 1 cup fresh blueberries, a splash of olive oil, the juice of 1/2 lemon (or more, to taste). Pulse until the blueberries are just chopped, then season with salt and pepper. Serve with blue corn tortilla chips. • Cheese topper: Simmer 1 cup blueberries with 1 tablespoon sugar and a dash of hot sauce. When the blueberries have broken down and thickened, pour over a room temperature round of brie. Serve with baguette slices or crackers.

BLACK PEPPER HONEY FRUIT SALAD Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 10 1 quart strawberries, halved 1 pint blueberries 1 mango (about 1 pound), peeled, pitted and diced 20-ounce jar grapefruit segments, drained 2 nectarines, cut into 1-inch pieces 3 plums, cut into 1-inch pieces Pinch of salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 tablespoons honey In a large bowl, gently mix together the strawberries, blueberries, mango, grapefruit segments, nectarines and plums. In a small bowl, whisk together the salt, pepper, lime juice and honey. Drizzle the dressing over the fruit and stir gently to coat. GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

MAKE IT 1 cup sugar 3 cups water four 3-inch strips lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler 1 cup fresh lemon juice 2 fresh mint sprigs chilled beer, such as pale ale

LEMON SHANDY Wheat beers have long been a staple in my refrigerator

In a small saucepan bring sugar and 1 cup water to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved, and stir in zest. Cool sugar syrup to room temperature. Transfer syrup to a small pitcher and stir in remaining 2 cups water, lemon juice, and mint. Chill lemonade until cold. (Makes about 4 1/2 cups lemonade.) Pour 1/4 cup lemonade, or to taste, into each of 4 chilled beer glasses and top off with beer.

come summertime. But this year, I’m mixing it up with the Lemon Shandy. For the uninitiated, a shandy is beer mixed with soda water or juice; lemonade makes for the traditional shandy. And while I have always enjoyed a craft beer kissed with fruit (I recall the Summer of the Raspberry Ale a few years back), the national marketing push by beermaker Leinenkugel for its new Lemon Shandy and the introduction of a Lemon Shandy by ShockTop (a personal favorite brand), has me tasting this refreshing beer-lemonade mixture wherever I can. Thankfully, there are plenty of them out

— from epicurious.com

there — I’ve enjoyed them on the patio of local restaurants after work, at home after a long hike, even at the base of the mountain after skiing (yes, skiing in summer — but that’s another story). And in “researching” this column, I found out how to make my own concoction. But like all libations, some versions are better than others. I like a not-too-sweet, but still sort of mouth-puckering shandy; and it needs to be lightweight and served cold, cold, cold. Stay tuned for which one meets all these standards...I’m still tasting. Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times Publisher Gunilla Asher, who died June 2 after a brave battle with cancer. Gunilla wrote her column without any real training, other than in the spirit of “she is not a connoisseur, but she is heavily practiced.” We intend to carry on the crusade in her memory, so email jmcgovern@aspentimes.com with what cocktails you’re mixing, what libations you’re drinking and what tastes have tempted your tastebuds, and we’ll share them with our readers. Cheers — to Gunner!

ASPEN UNTUCKED

by BARBARA PLATTS

A dip in the Conundrum Hot Springs after a long hike serves as a simple reminder of why we live in Aspen.

THE LITTLE THINGS

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL ROCKY MOUNTAINS LAST WEEK, I WAS CONVINCED my hair was falling out. I had reached a level beyond stressed out. Each time I put a brush to my hair it seemed like large strands would flee from my head. I’d been spreading myself thin for weeks. In the midst of concluding one job and starting an entirely new one, I BARBARA found myself clocking PLATTS 16-hour workdays at a minimum. Any free second of time available I would fill with another task, yet nothing ever seemed to get done. A constant fear of not meeting a deadline or letting something slip loomed over me, even during my deepest of REM cycles. And then, last Thursday, many of the obligations hanging over my head culminated. Tasks that seemed permanent on my to-do list were finally complete. A steady breath returned, my hair grasped to my head a bit stronger, and, although there was still much more work to come, I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Aspen is a place filled with adventures, fun times, and interesting opportunities. There’s always a new experience to be had. But, even up here, it can become so dangerously

easy to fall into a pattern. I’d had my head down since the beginning of June, trying to complete all of my work commitments. The trouble was, I had lost site of the raw beauty around me. I had forgotten why I was here. A friend who recently moved to Aspen helped remind me. She invited me to hike to Conundrum Hot Springs over the weekend with a group of her friends. I hadn’t set up my tent for a year and I had no idea where any of my gear was. But I accepted her invitation, knowing that summer was quickly slipping away and if I didn’t take advantage of opportunities like this, regret would surely follow. The 8.5-mile hike to Conundrum Hot Springs was a new adventure

for me. When our group of six met up on Saturday morning to take on the distance I had little idea what to expect. But overwhelming feelings of relief and excitement overcame me the second I switched my phone into airplane mode. My travel buddies and I were filled with complete bliss during our 28 hours of cellular silence. The trail was long, but not particularly steep. As we headed for the springs, I found that the little things made all of the difference: my silenced thoughts, the rushing sound of the river, the feeling of dirt underneath my fingernails as we set up camp, and the sun tickling my face as I took a short nap in my tent once we were settled. Our pasta dinner tasted better than any dish

from a restaurant. And the water at the hot springs felt more relaxing than any hot tub in any mansion in Aspen. The next day, we headed back to civilization. When we reached the trailhead we all switched our phones on to check work emails and text messages. We then rushed into town to catch the end of the World Cup finals and to scarf down cheeseburgers. After we polished off our meals we all talked of the workweek ahead and our return to the real world. I’m excited about the challenges to come at my new job. I know there will be several long days and probably large amounts of head hair that will go missing during the busy weeks. But the best escapes are only a short drive or a long hike away. Our backyard provides enough adventures to help each of us relax and reset whenever necessary. We just have to remember to take advantage of them. And, as for my hair, I suppose I could always use Rogaine for Women if the situation starts looking particularly sparse. Barbara Platts is the new associate editor and marketing coordinator for Aspen Magazine. She is very excited about the challenges and rewards ahead. VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | FRANCE

by LORI HINNANT for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

THE LITTLE PRINCE

LIKE THE BOOK, THIS PARK DELIGHTS IN THE SMALL THINGS TUCKED INTO A CORNER of eastern France where overseas tourists rarely venture, the Park of the Little Prince takes its name from one of French literature’s most beloved characters — and takes its cues from a time when roller coasters didn’t set out to terrify, living rooms televisions didn’t have multi-player 3-D video games and theme parks were scaled for the small. The park, which opened July 1, is perfect for visitors looking for a way to entertain small children who might have had their fill of the French, German or Swiss countryside. It’s located in Ungersheim, in the heart of the Alsace region, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Basel, Switzerland, and about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the German border. There are 31 attractions based loosely on the theme of flight — the Little Prince is a space explorer and author Antoine de Saint-Exupery was a well-known pilot. (He got his pilot’s license in Strasbourg, the regional capital of

Alsace.) Attractions include two tethered passenger balloons, a film about deep-sea mysteries watched from the perspective of a water scooter, and visits with real fox cubs or a flock of sheep with their sheepdog. Despite the smattering of hightech, the park — like the book, which was published in 1943 — is more about slowing down and taking stock of the small things that delight. And remember, as the Little Prince said, “children should always show great forbearance toward grown-up people.”

IF YOU GO... PARK OF THE LITTLE PRINCE: www.parcdupetitprince.com. Located in Ungersheim in eastern France. Open daily, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Adults, 22 euros ($30), children 3-11, 16 euros ($21), children younger than 3 free. Family pass (2 adults, 2 children), 69 euros ($94). GETTING THERE: High-speed trains serve Strasbourg, about a 90-minute drive from Ungersheim, as well as Basel, Switzerland, about a half-hour drive from the park.

STAYING ON THEIR TOES by ANDREW TRAVERS

THE MODEST BASEMENT STUDIO of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, below Colorado Mountain College off of Highway 82, has grown into more than a practice space for the 10 dancers in the local company. It is an incubator for emerging choreographers and the birthplace of award-winning contemporary dance pieces. It is a hub of cultural exchange, the home base for a sought-after touring company, and an innovative arts organization — an organization that earlier this year made an ambitious move by taking over management of a promising, but floundering, New Mexico flamenco dance group.

The flamenco company, Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe, performs at the Aspen District Theatre on July 22, days after Aspen Santa Fe’s dancers’ only local shows of the summer. Siddi’s company has been running for six seasons in Santa Fe, performing traditional Spanish dance in a small cabaret theater there for an eight-week summer season, and catching the attention of Aspen Santa Fe directors JeanPhilippe Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker in the process. Despite Siddi and his 13 dancers’ on-stage success, the company was struggling financially off-stage, with its future in question. This spring, Aspen Santa Fe adopted Siddi’s group, taking over its day-today operations – allowing Siddi to focus on flamenco. “It’s just a big relief from my shoulders,” says Siddi. “Now I can focus more on the production itself, rather than worrying about ticket sales and housing and everything else.” Malaty says the burgeoning dance company is a lot like Aspen Santa Fe in the early years after its 1996 founding. Aspen Santa Fe had donated their Santa Fe studio to Siddi’s company for rehearsals, and its directors had watched the company’s progress for years. “It reminds us of ourselves when we were just beginning,” says Malaty. “Now we’re having success and we want to share that.” Under the Aspen Santa Fe umbrella, Juan Siddi also expects to tour more often, to perform in larger venues than they have previously, and to stage more complex shows. Siddi said the group’s Aspen performances this summer — a second local show is scheduled for Aug. 5 — will include large casts performing flamenco, including Siddi, three singers, six female dancers, with guitar, cello and violin accompaniment. The performances in Aspen will include a new seguiriya flamenco piece that the company has been developing this summer. Siddi said Aspen Santa Fe resources, like a lighting designer, have helped turn Siddi’s pieces into fullbodied productions. Malaty estimates the partnership will require an annual investment of about $185,000 from Aspen Santa Fe, which operates with a $3.5 million annual budget. “We have been financially struggling,” says Siddi. “This has been a blessing for all of us, and it’s very exciting.” The move is characteristic of an organization, in Aspen Santa Fe, that has taken a creative approach to arts management, evidenced in its dual homes in Aspen and Santa Fe and its strategic additions of educational programs through the years. “One of our strengths is to see opportunities and not to have a plan,” Malaty explains. “If we’d had a plan 18 years ago, it would have been very limited. We never would have seen us taking over management of a flamenco company.” The national and international dance community has taken notice of Aspen Santa Fe, for its elegance and its ambitions, both on-stage and as an organization.

At the end of the summer, the local company goes on tour, with seven stops around the U.S. It has grown into an in-demand touring company, with stops in recent years at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the Berkshires, and the Joyce Theater in New York — along with international showcases, like a performance last year in Moscow. Ella Baff, executive and artistic director of Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts, was an early Aspen Santa Fe supporter. Founded in 1931, Jacob’s Pillow is the oldest running dance festival in the U.S. and

among its most prestigious. Baff had known Mossbrucker when he was a dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, and first hosted the company at the festival in 2003. This summer will be Aspen Santa Fe’s sixth performance at Jacob’s Pillow. “Tom was spectacular [as a dancer], but that doesn’t always translate into being a great artistic director,” she says. Baff quickly realized, however, that Mossbrucker and Malaty were creating something special in Aspen and Santa Fe. “They have great taste, they love supporting new work and new artists, they are incredibly well-organized and [they are] brilliant strategically in the way they’ve developed and grown the company,” says Baff. “They’re a great team.” Aspen Santa Fe’s August program at Jacob’s Pillow includes three works commissioned by the company and created in its local studio: “Over Glow” by Jorma Elo, “Beautiful Mistake” by Cayetano Soto and “The Heart(s)pace” by Nicolo Fonte. In October, the company will perform a week-long run at the Joyce, performing the Soto and Fonte pieces, along with another past commissioned work, Jiri Kylian’s “Return to a Strange Land.” The Joyce, a dance destination in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan since 1982, has hosted Aspen Santa Fe seven times since 2002, in what its director of programing, Martin Wechsler, says are dependably well-sold and popular performances. In 2010, the Joyce honored Malaty and Mossbrucker with the Joyce Theater Award, recognizing them for their innovative business model and performances. Wechsler says Aspen Santa Fe has stood out by commissioning new work from

established choreographers like Kylian and Twyla Tharp, along with new discoveries for the Joyce audience, like Soto. In 2012, Aspen Santa Fe commissioned and premiered a new piece by 23-year-old Norbert de la Cruz III — his first — titled “Square None,” which is included in the local shows this weekend. It won the 2012 Princess Grace Foundation Award for Choreography and, in touring performances over the last two years, has announced the young choreographer to the dance world. That

sort of eye for talent, and development of emerging choreographers, has set Aspen Santa Fe apart, says Wechsler. “The company is taking a leadership role in the field,” he says. “Other companies certainly are commissioning, and they are not unique in that regard, but commissioning new work is the future of the art form. … The creation of new works, and supporting young choreographers to create those works is essential and vital to the form. I think that’s really admirable, and they do it well.” The simplicity of the company’s productions — with a minimalist approach to scenery and a focus on the physicality of dancers rather than props or sets — make them ideal for performances on the road. Their lack of technical demands limits the cost of hosting them, says Wechsler, and makes them adaptable to playing a variety of venue sizes. The way Malaty and Mossbrucker run the company has also drawn notice from the dance world. “One thing I’ve always admired about them is how wonderfully they treat their dancers,” says Wechsler. “They treat them like the precious and talented artists they are, and dancers don’t always get that treatment.” Nationally, dance companies with budgets above $3 million in the U.S. averaged commissioning four new works in 2012 and 2013, according to Dance/USA, the national service organization for the professional dance field. Aspen Santa Fe usually commissions at least one for its summer season and for its winter season, though no new pieces are in the works for this summer. The company’s local shows — July 17 and 19 — will include encore presentations of locally commissioned pieces: de la Cruz’s “Square None,” Kylian’s “Return to a Strange Land” and Fonte’s “The Heart(s) pace,” which debuted last winter. In this week’s performances in Aspen, dancer Nolan McGahan takes over portions of “Square None” that were created for Seth Delgrasso, who had been with the company since its founding and retired two years ago, and Sam Chittenden, who danced with Aspen Santa Fe for 15 years. Delgrasso and Chittenden both now work on the administrative side of the company, and discussed the piece with McGahan.

“THEY HAVE GREAT TASTE, THEY LOVE SUPPORTING NEW WORK AND NEW ARTISTS, THEY ARE INCREDIBLY WELL-ORGANIZED AND [THEY ARE] BRILLIANT STRATEGICALLY IN THE WAY THEY’VE DEVELOPED AND GROWN THE COMPANY... THEY’RE A GREAT TEAM.” – ELLA BAFF JACOB’S PILLOW

“I sought out both of their individual input,” says McGahan, a member of the company since he graduated from the Juilliard School in 2007. “I hadn’t realized, until I became more comfortable in the piece, how much of the two of them [was] embedded in the part.” The process of handing down parts within Aspen Santa Fe commissioned works, McGahan says, is part of a changing of the guard within the company in recent years. “It helps give a connection through the transition of the company,” he says. “It’s a bridge between the older generations and the newer.” “Over Glow,” Jorma Elo’s composition that the company commissioned in 2011, and which they are performing this summer at Jacob’s Pillow, is also undergoing a shift in players. Elo choreographed prominent parts of the piece on Chittenden and Katie Dehler, both of whom retired in 2013. Dancers Craig Black and

Emily Proctor stepped into the roles originated by Chittenden and Dehler, with assistance from Elo. The Finnish choreographer visited the company’s Aspen studio in June to work on the piece with the new dancers. “It’s important to maintain the integrity of the piece,” Malaty says of the tune-up with the choreographer. The company’s Folklorico program has also garnered attention well beyond the Roaring Fork Valley. Begun in 1998, Folklorico teaches Mexican dance to more than 300 youngsters in the valley and in Santa Fe, ranging from kindergarten through high school. Last month, the program was featured at the National Association of Folkloric Groups annual conference in Albuquerque. And the local program this year expanded from Basalt and Carbondale to Glenwood Springs and Rifle. Last summer, Aspen Santa Fe brought the Harlem-

Meet Ollie. He is such a good boy. He only weighs 12 pounds but that doesn’t slow him down and it’s the perfect size for a good snuggle on your lap or next to you - one of Ollie’s favorite things to do! Rescued from a high kill shelter in New Mexico with 20 minutes to spare it’s hard to imagine how he ended up there. Approximately 2 years old Ollie is great with people and other dogs. He is living with a tiny old dog and a Border Collie and does great with both. He is playful, funny and affectionate - such a sweetie. He looks sort of like an Italian Greyhound/Chihuahua mix. His face is more Chi but he has long, thin, dainty legs and feet - very interesting looking. He is a smart boy, learned the doggie door right away and likes to be with his people. He LOVES his walks and enjoys all the sights and sounds. He is current on all his vaccinations, neutered, de-wormed and micro chipped. If you would like to meet this boy please fill out an Adoption Application on www.luckydayrescue.org or call Kelley on 970-379-4606.

The Harlem group returns this month, with a joint performance scheduled for July 26. Baff, of Jacob’s Pillow, says Aspen Santa Fe has set itself apart by creating an audience and an excitement for dance in Aspen and Santa Fe, not only though its own performances, but by hosting other companies in their home bases, by investing in new works and by developing meaningful education programs like Folklorico. “They’ve set a standard that all companies aspire to,” says Baff.

Service of this summons shall be complete on the day of the last publication. A copy of the Complaint may be obtained from the clerk of the court. (10349640) NOTICE OF DECISION EXCHANGE OF LANDS IN EAGLE GARFIELD AND PITKIN, COUNTIES, COLORADO Sutey Ranch Land Exchange, Serial No. COC-74812 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado River Valley Field Office, 2300 River Frontage Road, Silt, Colorado 81652. Notice is hereby given that on June 20, 2014, Steve Bennett, Field Manager, Colorado River Valley Field Office, issued a decision to approve a proposed land exchange with Proponents Leslie and Abigail Wexner and to accept the Proponents' offer to donate 235.38 acres to the United States. Participating entities in the land exchange include 2343 County Road, LLC; Prince Creek Crown, LLC; and Lady Belle Partnership, LLLP. The proposed exchange would convey six parcels of Federal lands in Pitkin and Eagle Counties, aggregating 1470.01 acres, to acquire two parcels of non-Federal lands totaling 433.03 acres located in Garfield and Pitkin Counties. The BLM determined the Federal lands suitable for disposal by exchange pursuant to Section 206 of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (43 U.S.C. 1716), as amended (FLPMA). The proposed exchange will dispose of six Federal parcels in Pitkin and Eagle Counties to acquire a portion of the Sutey Ranch in Garfield County and a parcel adjacent to The Crown in Pitkin County. The Federal parcels in Pitkin County have limited public access. The Proponents' Two Shoes Ranch border most of the Pitkin County Federal parcels. Patents for the described Federal lands will reserve a right-of-way for ditches or canals constructed by the authority of the United States pursuant to the Act of August 30, 1890 (43 U.S.C. 945). The patents issued for the Federal lands will convey surface and minerals. Two Federal parcels will be subject to existing rights-of-way for roads. Specific legal descriptions and maps of the parcels involved in this exchange are available from the Colorado River Valley Field Office at the above address, on-line at www.blm.gov/co/crvfo, or by contacting Monte Senor at (970) 876-9067. Disposal of the Federal lands is consistent with the considerations for land tenure adjustments outlined in Appendix D of the Glenwood Springs Resource Management Plan as revised (1988). The Federal lands located in Eagle and Pitkin Counties, are isolated from other Federal lands, and are difficult and uneconomic for the BLM to manage. The exchange will consolidate ownership and improve the efficiency and management by the Bureau of Land Management. In exchange, the United States will acquire a portion of the Sutey Ranch in Garfield County and a parcel in the area of The Crown in Pitkin County. Both parcels are accessible by county roads. The United States will acquire the Sutey Ranch parcel in fee, subject to existing rights-of-way. The United States will acquire surface only in the West Crown parcel as the Federal patent reserved all minerals. The parcel will be subject to a right-of-way for Prince Creek Road and any valid existing rights. The encumbrances will not interfere with future management objectives for the parcels and are acceptable to the United States.

Upon completion of the proposed land exchange, the proponents will grant conservation easements on Federal parcels A and B to the Aspen Valley Land Trust and conservation easements on Parcels C, D, and E to the Eagle Valley Land Trust. The Department of Interior's Office of Valuation Services (OVS) approved appraisals for the Federal and non-Federal lands. Appraisal of the exchange lands determined the value of the nonFederal lands to be substantially higher than the value of the Federal lands. A supplemental appraisal of Parcel 1 in August 2013 separated the Sutey Ranch into two tracts, Parcel 1A will to remain as the exchange parcel. The Proponents offered to donate Parcel 1B to the United States under a separate transaction pursuant to Section 205 of the FLPMA. The OVS approved the values for Parcels 1A and 1B on August 26, 2013 The BLM evaluated the impacts associated with the exchange and addressed them in an Environmental Assessment prepared for the land e x c h a n g e a n d d o n a t i o n , DOI-BLM-CO-040-2013-0061-EA (EA). The exchange and donation will increase land management efficiency, especially for protection and enhancement of wildlife and recreation resources. The non-Federal parcels include water and riparian resources. The exchange will well serve the public interest. Interested parties may obtain a copy of the EA and the decision to approve the exchange and donation from the Colorado River Valley Field Office at the above address, on-line at www.blm.gov/co/crvfo, or by contacting Monte Senor at (970) 876-9067. Interested parties may submit a written protest to Steve Bennett, Field Manager, Colorado River Valley Field Office, at the above address through Aug. 4, 2014 (45 days from the date of first publication of this notice). Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your protest, you should be aware that the BLM may make your entire comment - including your personal identifying information - publicly available at any time. BOOK REVIEW

‘FROZEN IN TIME’ NEARLY EVERYONE WHO has sat through a high school history course is familiar with the main events of World War II. Fewer, though, have heard about the adventures of the valiant airmen who set out above the vast and unforgiving ice shelf of Greenland to search for two downed aircrafts. Thanks to author Mitchell Zuckoff’s recent book, “Frozen in Time,” the gripping story of these men is now available to history buffs and armchair adventurers alike. Through careful research and boots-on-the-ground immersion, Zuckoff has assembled a fascinating account of the months of bitter cold and hardship the brave airmen experienced as they endeavored to rescue three of their own, holding to the mantra of “leave no man behind.” Transitioning smoothly between the tale of the men’s trials on the ice and the modern day expedition that strove

enough for a story, Zuckoff reveals the final scenes of the drama. One involves a third doomed search plane and the other the modern day expedition with its goal of bringing that third craft’s missing heroes home. Very quickly, “Frozen in Time” becomes riveting, as the World War II fight for survival converges with the fascinating account of the struggle to find and retrieve the Grumman Duck from beneath the ice and 70 years of history. With photographs and maps, the lives of the bold airmen become large and personable and their efforts to survive are unforgettable. Though hidden from the public because of its strategic importance, the tales of Greenland and the roles of the men who served there are important. Bravery during wartime can come in many guises, and Zuckoff deftly highlights a neglected part of history.

to find the lost Grumman Duck plane, the book is intense and difficult to put down. The unlucky sequence of events crucial to Zuckoff’s story began in the waning days of November 1942, when a cargo plane returning from ferrying supplies to Iceland crashed into the ice of Greenland’s eastern edge. Since crashes were fairly common, there was no real immediate concern for the men, for it was known that all five survived, and rescues had been successful in the past. But in spite of radio contact with the downed craft, the plane could not be found, and concern for the illequipped men grew. Greenland’s weather can turn on a dime, and the rescuers soon found themselves stranded, as well, as a sudden whiteout forced a hasty crash landing.. If this scenario is not gripping
