POPULAR MUSIC GARY CLARK JR.’S fuzzed-out guitar mastery and soulful singing have earned him a reputation as a can’t miss performer. From Coachella to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival to Glastonbury and the Grammy’s tribute to the Beatles, the Austinbased guitar slinger has slayed music’s biggest stages over the last year. This weekend, Clark, 30, comes to Aspen for a Saturday night show at Belly Up on July 26, in one of the most anticipated shows of the summer — the night after he plays Red Rocks with the Tedeschi Trucks Band. His 2012 major label debut album “Blak and Blu” followed a handful of buzz-worthy EPs and locally produced records along with years of notoriously hard-charging shows in his native Austin, where he’s been hailed as an heir to Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan. The album displays a transcendent range — a touch of R&B, with dashes of garage rock, soul and hip-hop mixed into his stew of blues. He’s less of a throwback bluesman, and more of a blues musician pulling the form into the 21st century. Reserved seats for the show have already sold out. General admission tickets are $80 and available at www.bellyupaspen.com. Reggae outfit Carlton Pride & Mighty Zion open the show.

Austin-based blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. will play Belly Up on Saturday July 26.

CURRENTEVENTS FILM

The 12th annual Aspen Art Festival will take over Monarch Street on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27. The event brings artists from across the country to Aspen like sculptor Richard Turner, of Kansas, photgraphed here setting up his booth in Wagner Park.

“Print the Legend,” a documentary about the advent of 3D printing and the new industrial revolution, will screen on Monday, July 28 as part of Aspen Film and the Aspen Institute’s New Views series.

3D PRINTING is the new frontier of technology. It’s a source of hope, in the form of emerging uses like printed exoskeletons that can help the paralyzed walk, as displayed in a demonstration earlier this month at the Aspen Ideas Festival. And it’s a source of fear, due to the potential for uses like home-printed guns. The new documentary, “Print the Legend,” takes an inside look at the innovators aiming to bring 3D printing to desktops across the world. It screens Monday, July 28, at Paepcke Auditorium, as the second film in this summer’s New Views series, presented by Aspen Film and the Aspen Institute. Producer Chad Troutwine will be in attendance for a post-screening conversation. Tickets are $20 and available at www.aspenshowtix.com

ART NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR, the Downtown Aspen Art Festival takes over Monarch Street on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. The festival brings dozens of artists from across the U.S. to town for a two-day outdoor art show, with booths featuring sculpture, photography, painting, ceramic and jewelry among its offerings. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. More information at www.artfestival.com.

Jul y 2 4 - Jul y 30, 2014

PLANNING SUMMER OUTINGS here in Montana used to be simple: Enlist participants, round up gear, drive to the river or trailhead, and go. But as I plan this year’s adventures, I’m warning the possible participants: Smoke may force cancellation. Last August was dicey. With wildfires roaring in 11 Western states, all of our outings were at the mercy of wind patterns. Every morning at home in Helena that month, I began my day by pulling up Montana Department of Environmental Quality’s daily wildfire-smoke update. Prepared by the state Department of Environmental Quality’s air quality meteorologist, the update predicts which areas of Montana will be affected by wildfire smoke that day. Satellite photos on the site were revealing, and troubling. I wasn’t surprised to see smoke plumes headed our way from the Gold Pan Complex Fire in the Bitterroot Valley, across the Continental Divide in western Montana. And it was easy to trace the smoke from fires in Idaho, Washington and Oregon, which was heading almost directly east toward where we live. But what surprised me was how often the photos also showed plumes streaking northeast from wildfires in California to reach us in central Montana. Forecasts and satellite data are of limited utility. So if I saw worrisome indications in the satellite photo or the air quality forecast, I’d step outside and run this reality check recommended by the DEQ: If I could see the ridge known as the Sleeping Giant, across the valley in the Big Belt Range, the air quality was good enough and our outdoor plans could go forward. If I couldn’t see the Sleeping Giant, plans were aborted, and we’d hunker down inside until the winds shifted and the skies cleared. As much as I hate to waste a warm summer day, I won’t gamble with my health. The Montana chapter of the American Lung Association advises staying inside on smoky days, warning that the fine particulates from wildfire smoke increase the risk of respiratory tract infection, reduced lung function and bronchitis. In fact, once again this year the lung association gave my county (Lewis and Clark) a failing grade for particulate pollution on a 24-hour basis, due in part to wildfire smoke. In a story published this May in our local paper, the Helena Independent Record, Kim Davit, manager of Montana Initiatives for the ALA, said that while winter air quality has improved here in our county, summer air quality has worsened due to the

trend toward increased wildfires. Moreover, even low concentrations of wildfire smoke reduce visibility. What’s the point of going out in Big Sky Country if the world-class vistas are obscured? For these reasons, it’s not surprising that Montana’s official travel website now warns tourists of summer fire conditions, and provides links to fire incident data and Montana DEQ’s daily smoke update. It’s likely that savvy tourists from back East will heed those smoke warnings, cancel their summer trips to Montana and go to, say, Florida instead. But for those of us who live here, it’s a trickier proposition. During much of the year, we look forward to warm summer days, snow-free trails in the high country and lazy hours on the rivers. And yet, during recent summers, many of those plans have been stymied by smoke. Last August, my wife and I suffered cabin fever when smoke kept us cooped up inside for days at a stretch. When we couldn’t stand it any longer, we’d race out of town to picnic in a smoke-free area of the state for the day, just to savor blue skies and clean air. This year, we have above-average snowpack in Montana, so our fire season locally may not be so bad. But by May, California had already experienced numerous serious fires. We’ll see how the smoke season plays out. Just to be clear, I well understand that wildland fires are part of the natural order, helping forests regenerate by (among other things) returning nutrients to the soil and clearing undergrowth. I’m also glad that public-land managers have come to recognize the ecological benefits of fire, and I don’t seek any change in fire policy. But more and more, I dread fire season, or, more precisely, smoke season. I’m tired of being downwind of so many Western wildfires, sick of sitting indoors on otherwise gorgeous summer days with every door and window sealed up tight. I’m beginning to see significant lifestyle changes coming. At some point, will some of us Montanans become “smokebirds” and flee our beloved state (or, at least, its smokier portions) during the worst of fire season? It pains me to even consider it. But if climate change is increasing the incidence of wildfires across the West, we “downwinders” here on the Eastern Slope of the Rockies may find our options limited. Forrestt Miller (right) with Bob Kevan, hamming it up for Miller’s annual children’s concert.

FORRESTT MILLER: SPECIMEN OR SAMPLE Those of you who remember the “Aspen” Forrestt Miller, picture him in Western garb, from a bolo tie at his neck down to cowboy boots on his feet. Miller spent the academic year at Mannes College in Manhattan, became a well-known cantor, and lived the New York life. Summers, he directed student concerts for the Aspen Music Festival. When he traveled West, he lived the Western life. Miller enjoyed his Aspen summers, during which he established friendships with many locals. As he got older and began thinking about retiring, his dreams turned toward Colorado. I remember a day when he beamed with joy and pride; he told me he had bought land in Silverton, acres of land, an old mining claim, and I think there was a house involved too. A few weeks later he visited John Herron, my uncle, with a chunk of mineral in hand. They knew each other socially and Miller knew my uncle had been in the mining business. My uncle gave the rock a once over and told Miller that it was silver ore. Miller said the man who sold him the mining claim said it had come out of a mine on that claim. He also implied that the former owner had told him the

claim had not been worked for a while, but there was more of that ore still there. Uncle Johnny pressed for details

MILLER WAS IN WESTERN HEAVEN; HE HAD LAND IN COLORADO AND A SILVER MINE TO BOOT. HE TOLD EVERYONE WHO WOULD LISTEN ABOUT HIS GREAT FIND AND THE BARGAIN PRICE HE HAD PAID FOR IT. FESTIVAL MUSICIANS WERE HAPPY FOR HIM AND LOCALS ENJOYED SEEING A NEW YORKER EXTOL SOMETHING YOU COULDN’T BUY IN A CITY. and during the conversation he became convinced that Miller might actually have bought a mine that still contained some payable ore. Silver always excited Uncle Johnny so he told Miller he would line him up with someone who could evaluate the mine to see if it had payable ore, and in the meantime he

mine to boot. He told everyone who would listen about his great find and the bargain price he had paid for it. Festival musicians were happy for him and locals enjoyed seeing a New Yorker extol something you couldn’t buy in a city. After a few weeks’ bliss Miller had another social meeting with

my uncle. In the interim, Johnny had made some phone calls and found someone to examine the mine because the assay report had come back showing the ore was even higher in silver content than he had originally thought. He asked Miller what he had not asked the first time, “Did the owner of the property say this was an ore ‘sample’ or a ‘specimen’?” A sample is selected to represent the average ore; a specimen is selected as the most outstanding example of the ore. Miller, like most laymen, did not know the difference. The real story came out. The owner had thrown in the specimen as part of the real estate transaction. It had indeed been mined from Miller’s new property, during the olden days when the mine had produced fine silver. Miller’s chunk was an example of the finest ore that could be mined no more. Uncle Johnny was livid. Miller, meanwhile, appeared a little embarrassed, but that did not hamper his happily living out his Western fantasies. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. GEAR of the WEEK

THE SOURCE: ‘ULTIMATE HYDRATION SYSTEM’

GRAB A HOSE, bite, sip, and then drink — hydration reservoirs are the modern-day canteen, a water-toting vessel so useful and mandatory that I would never think of heading outdoors without one in my pack. So it was with interest that I tested a product this month: the self-proclaimed “Ultimate Hydration System” from Source. The Israel-based brand (www.sourceoutdoor. com) ships worldwide and sells the kit for $54. Over a month I have hiked, biked and ran with the system. It offers no huge diversion from existing reservoir designs, but the Source package has won me on a couple of fronts. First, the reservoir itself is made of a thin and semirigid polyethylene film. Water tastes clean from the reservoir, which is anti-microbial and so smooth that the company advertises it as “glass-like” in function and to the touch. For filling it up with water, the Source reservoir opens

wide on top to let you pour in H2O. It seals closed with a simple plastic clamp that slides into place. (It didn’t leak a drop in my test.) The hose has a woven nylon covering. This was made ostensibly to protect from errant sharp edges. UV light is blocked out, too, keeping liquid in the hose cooler if you’re hiking in the sun. Snap-on connectors allow you to detach the hose for fill-ups. The mouthpiece, a silicone bite-valve, twists to open and close. It comes off for cleaning. The company includes a neat add-on called the Universal Tube Adapter (UTA) that clicks in place where the mouthpiece goes. The UTA can hook to a water bottle or a sink faucet. This lets you add water to the reservoir from the drinking end, eliminating the need to take the whole unit out of your pack. Finally, the Ultimate Hydration System ships with a magnet clip. Attach it to a backpack strap and your bite-valve can click onto it instead of flopping around as you hike. (Just watch compass needles around strong magnets when trying to navigate on a trail!) In the end, the Ultimate Hydration System is a solid kit for beginner hikers or those with miles under their boots. It’s more expensive than some of the competition. But in my use, the product worked well and held up to abuse, all while keeping me hydrated in the woods. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

WINEINK

AUSTRALIA’S OTHER RED WINE WANDER INTO A WINE SHOP here in America, ask for red wines from Australia and, almost invariably, you’ll be directed toward Shiraz, most of it from the Barossa Valley. Not that there is anything wrong with that, of course. Aussie Shiraz, particularly those from the Barossa, have not just been tasty additions to our shelves, they KELLY J. have also been great HAYES ambassadors, serving to introduce the wines of Australia to Americans. But Australia is a big country and they make lots of very good wine. Much of it not from the Barossa, and much of it made from grapes other than Shiraz. A few years back I was fortunate to venture to South Australia and visited a place that produces, some the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon. The Coonawarra wine region is located about halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, around 30 miles inland from the Southern Ocean. And Coonawarra is Cab country. Here, for more than a century, the focus of the growers and winemakers has been on mining gold from what they perceive to be the best place in Australia to grow the Bordeaux grape Cabernet Sauvignon. Indeed, Cabernet can excel in a number of different places, from Napa to Mendoza for example. But there is something truly special about Coonawarra. The secret is the soil. The “Terra Rossa,” as they call it, is a strip of red dirt that runs along the top of an ancient limestone ridge. It is famed for its ability to simultaneously nurture and stress the vines, allowing clusters of grapes to thrive in leafy canopies, concentrating the luscious and complex flavors. Add to this the influence of the Southern Ocean — with breezes that begin their flutter in Antarctica before blowing in on summer evenings to cool the vineyards — and you have a perfect recipe for great grapes. On my trip through the region a number of things quickly became obvious. First, it is as flat

as a football field. This is no Napa Valley with hills and canyons, no valley floor. If you stand at one end of the region and look to other, the curvature of the earth is the only thing to interrupt your view. Second, nearly all of the vineyards sit cheek to jowl, separated by nothing more than a simple fence line or perhaps, at most, a dirt road. The Terra Rossa strip is a cigar-shaped patch of land that is about 12 miles long and no more than a mile and half wide — that’s it. So the land where this prized dirt sits is valued and valuable. But perhaps most strikingly, is that Coonawarra is home to a tightly knit wine community of families who live to farm the Terra Rossa and make great wine. Grapevines were first planted here in the 1890s and since that time the early pioneers to the area have spawned generations of farmers and winemakers who, to this day, Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate. in some vintages, a vegetal either operate relatively small Made by Sue Hodder, Australia’s characteristic that hints of the family estates or grow grapes for winemaker of the year in 2010 green leaves of the vines. FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

HUNGRY FOR SEA CHANGE

A ‘TRASH FISH’ DINNER IN DENVER SHOWS WHY SCORNED SPECIES SHOULD BE TREASURED THE CHEFS AND PURVEYORS behind the first-ever Denver “trash fish” dinner are quick to admit that the nickname for underutilized species sounds about as appealing as the concept of Dumpster diving. But therein lies the irony: Lesser-known fish, caught accidentally and discarded from the dock by trawlers because of their uncool or nonexistent AMANDA reputation, are RAE tasty, sustainable substitutes for popular, endangered varieties that restaurants, and therefore consumers, favor. While only a fraction of finned creatures — salmon, tuna, cod, tilapia, and halibut are a few — find fame on restaurant menus and in grocery stores, countless more never make it to market. The global fishing fleet is operating at 2.5 times the sustainable level, and 85 percent of the world’s fisheries are either fully exploited, overexploited or have collapsed, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. So, Chefs Collaborative, a national nonprofit founded in 1993 by a group of visionaries including Rick Bayless, Nobu Matsuhisa, and Alice Waters, is on a mission to change our perception about these rejects — and hopefully prevent mass extinction along the way. “There are so many fantastic, fun, and freakin’ weird fish out there that have so much more versatility than just being fried,” says Theo Adley, executive chef of The Squeaky Bean, which hosts the Chefs Collaborative Denver Trash Fish Dinner on Monday, July 28, in conjunction with top chef Kelly Whitaker (Pizzeria Basta in Boulder and the newly opened Cart Driver in Denver) and regional supplier Seattle Fish. “Using trash fish — it’s a little bit punk rock. It’s bringing a consortium of chefs together, experimenting, and broadening our guests’ horizons.” The meal will also stretch creativity among seven noted chefs from around the country, who descend on Denver’s

16

burgeoning food scene to each prepare a dish using a different species of trash fish with odd names like mullet, snakehead, and razor clam. Following a slew of successful similar dinners in other culinary hot spots (Portland, Ore.; Chicago; Boston; Las Vegas; Los Angeles), the Denver Trash Fish Dinner fundraiser will also whet appetites for the sixth annual Chefs Collaborative Sustainable Foods Summit, which draws 300-plus industry professionals to Boulder in September with a shared goal: “to help fix America’s broken food system.” It will be the first such gathering in a landlocked state. “Having this event focused on seafood is really relevant in Colorado, probably more so than coastal cities, in terms of our accessibility to fresh seafood,” Adley says. “These fish are often not spoken of, and our guests won’t be familiar with them. Oftentimes in Colorado, we’re funneled into using the same few fish on our menus simply because they’re accessible to our guests, and more readily available.” That’s the catch of the overfishing conundrum: Until the public learns of alternatives and chefs find it viable to source those over prized varieties, fisherman won’t be encouraged to catch ’em. They’ll continue to hunt for fruits of the sea that fetch top dollar at market…and the cycle continues. In March, chef Whitaker helped launch a Chefs Collaborative Trash Fish Dinner with Michael Cimarusti and David LeFevre in Hermosa Beach, Calif., freshly inspired after attending the Sustainable Foods Summit in Charleston, S.C., on professional scholarship. “It flipped my world,” says Whitaker, who heads the Colorado chapter of Chefs Collaborative and was honored recently at the Niman Ranch Farmer Appreciation Dinner. “I felt an obligation to become part of Chefs Collaborative — this is shaping my restaurant group, shaping my menu. I wanted to inform everyone of what’s going on…When fish tacos started becoming really cool

Chef Carolyn Johnson’s smoked dogfish pate from the 2014 Chefs Collaborative Trash Fish Boston Dinner.

in the ’80s, there was a switch from pollock — nobody wanted it! This fish was readily available, but it went away because it became uncool to use that as your fish taco. Tilapia was the cool new fish, or halibut. It’s a marketing issue, big time.” On Monday, Whitaker will prepare crudo of South American cobia, new to Seattle Fish distribution. “The texture is just amazing,” he says, adding that raw fish and oysters feature prominently on his menu at Cart Driver. “Now we’re using cobia all the time. We never use tuna; cobia is that switch. If I put a trash fish on the menu, then I’m training guests.” Adley learned the importance of focusing on high-quality, seasonal ingredients and sustainable seafood while cooking alongside rockstar chefs Ryan Hardy and Kyle Robinson at The Little Nell in the early 2000s. “Those two guys were absolute maniacs, they’d turn sardines into these mind-blowing little bites,” Adley marvels. “They’re these shitty little fish, but they would make them just…sexy. It was all about elevation of humble ingredients.” Other tastes at the six-course Chefs Collaborative Denver Trash Fish Dinner might include blue

catfish, amberjack, Arcadian redfish, and blood clams. Adley is toying with recipes for lionfish, snakehead, and sheepshead. “Snakehead carries some catfish qualities,” Adley says. “Steaky texture. It’s widely eaten in Thailand. Lionfish is totally invasive, but gorgeous. Sheepshead eat oysters and other shellfish so they get this wonderful minerality in their flesh. They’re super dorky looking, but really sweet. Sheepshead has a long and wonderful story in the US, and it’s a good barometer of our own ecosystem.” (New York City’s Sheepshead Bay was once rife with the namesake fish thanks to gigantic underwater oyster beds, but they began to disappear in the 1800s, mainly due to overfishing and pollution.) “It’s our responsibility — as chefs and consumers — to create a sustainable market,” Adley says. “Fads and comfort zones happen often in food. We don’t have a tremendous seafood culture, but it’s a really important one. There are serious issues going on with sustainability. It sucks. But it doesn’t suck as bad for us as it’s going to for our kids.” Amanda Rae…has gone fishing. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

CHARRO NEGRO We are a nation that loves a holiday. There’s National Grandparent’s Day and National Secretary’s Day and even National Donut Day (the first Friday in June, in case you’re wondering). So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to learn that July 24 marks yet another day worth celebrating — National Tequila Day. So in the honor of Gunilla Asher, who created this column and was a true tequila aficionado, this week’s Libation is a tequila drink. And while we could have gone with a shot (as Gunner would have done), or a margarita (see the Steamboat Sambrero in the June 19 edition), we decided to branch out a bit. So move over Cuba Libre, we’re

serving up the Charro Negro, which is a basic cocktail of tequila (instead of rum), coke and lime, with the added twist

of salt on the rim. A whole new way to enjoy tequila on a day dedicated to one of our favorite spirits. Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times Publisher Gunilla

Rim a glass with salt and fill with ice. Add lime juice, cola and tequila. Add a pinch of salt and stir. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve.

Asher, who died June 2 after a brave battle with cancer. Gunilla wrote her column without any real training, other than in the spirit of “she is not a connoisseur, but she is heavily practiced.” We intend to carry on the crusade in her memory, so email jmgovern@aspentimes.com with what cocktails you’re mixing, what libations you’re drinking and what tastes have tempted your tastebuds, and we’ll share them with our readers. ASPEN UNTUCKED

Dinner and drinks with good company: The best part of the workday.

LET THEM DRINK WINE

BOOZE, TASTY FOOD, AND GOOD TIMES ARE FLOWING THIS SEASON AT LIMELIGHT DINNER IS BY FAR my favorite meal. I don’t always know the specific seasonings that intermingle with my appetizer or entrée and I rarely know the precise birthplace of the wine I’m drinking. What I do know is that dinner is the most relaxing part of a workday and, while I hope the food and booze are of good quality, the most important part for me is the company. When BARBARA that is enjoyable, there PLATTS is no better way to conclude the day. We are certainly not deprived of dining establishments in Aspen. However, we all have a tendency to fall into food and beverage patterns, sticking with our favorite restaurants and usual dining group. From time to time, we need to force ourselves to branch out and try something new. That is what intrigued be about the notorious beer and/or spirit dinners at the Limelight Hotel. Restaurant manager Hunter Merten often told me about the fun atmosphere, tasty food, good company, and fine libations that coalesce together twice a month at the property to bring people a unique dining experience. And, for the very first time, they were introducing a wine dinner. No offense to spirits and beer, but I was certainly not going to miss a three-

20

course meal paired with wine. I easily convinced my roommate to join me for the festivities at the Limelight last Tuesday. The dinner featured wine from Peter Franus, a small but excellent wine company based in Napa Valley. We started the evening sipping Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc and nibbling on appetizers on the outdoor terrace. Franus and his wife attended, as well as scores of excited patrons. We then sat down for our courses in the bar area. Tables held as many as 12 people each so it was easy to find familiar faces as well as new people to meet. The first course was a Merlot paired with tender pork belly over macaroni & chevre goat cheese. Next came the

popular Emma Farms Wagyu beef sirloin paired with a Zinfandel. For dessert we were served a Prosecco clementine limoncello drizzle. Both the Limelight and Franus won me over with their generous pours of red wine during the meal. The experience was decadent, to say the least. But what gripped me was not the wine lessons or the delicious food. I was impressed with the true informality of the occasion. We were there to have fun. The Limelight staff and my fellow diners communicated that point well. A typical beer/wine/spirit dinner at Limelight is underpriced for Aspen ($40 per person), but Merten said making money is not the point of these dinners.

“It’s all about the experience,” Merten said. “We want people to have a great dinner with great friends and company. Plus, it shows off what we can do.” Merten said it was difficult to fill all of the seats at the dinners last summer. This year the reoccurring event has collected a slew of regulars. It is now rather difficult to get a reservation for the bi-weekly meal. “This year, it’s exploded,” Merten said. “Dinners fill up weeks in advance.” Limelight dinners attract patrons of all legal drinking ages, which is what makes the event so appealing. It breaks up the monotony of one’s dining schedule and clears the way for the best part of dinner: the company. Upcoming beer dinners include the Aspen Brewery and Avery Brewery. The climax of the summer arrives on Aug. 29 with the Grand Slam Beer Dinner. Each course includes a beer, wine, and spirit. The cost is only $65. However, there may be an additional fee if they have to carry you out at the end of the night. Barbara Platts is a sucker for anything involving grapes…with the exception of raisins, and grape juice, and occasionally fresh grapes. ESCAPE ARTIST | SUMMER

by AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

QUICK! SUMMER IS ALMOST OVER ... TRAVEL EVENTS TO HAVE ON YOUR CALENDAR

WE’VE GOT ABOUT five weeks left to live in the freedom of flip flops, shorts and all things al fresco. If you are looking from some nearby getaways there are two great events on my calendar — classical music in Utah and mushrooms in Eagle, not to mention as much camping in our own wonderful woods as possible.

AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

UTAH SYMPHONY EMBARKS ON THE MIGHTY 5 NATIONAL PARK TOUR

Utah, as we know, is a treasure trove of natural wonders and wild landscapes, from the Wasatch Mountains in the north to the red sand deserts in the south. The state is also home to five national parks — Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon and Zion, collectively known as “The Mighty 5.” This summer, Aug. 11-17, these national parks will host another state treasure, the Utah Symphony, to present a series of free, open-air, classical music concerts during its first-ever tour. Led by music director Thierry Fischer, the Utah Symphony’s performances anticipate the organization’s 75th anniversary and highlight the Centennial celebration of the National Park System, both of which take place in 2016. Visitors are encouraged to tour the parks by day and enjoy classical

concerts by night, beginning at 8 p.m. Set against the natural backdrop of southern Utah’s sandstone arches, spires and canyons, the 75-piece orchestra will perform pieces including movements from Dvořák’s “New World Symphony,” and Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” as well as vocal selections featuring Utah native and soprano soloist, Celena Shafer, performing Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess.” Additional free concerts and events inside the parks include chamber music at visitor centers and outdoor amphitheaters, active excursions with orchestra members, and music education opportunities. Tickets for all performances are free. Advance tickets are available now through select Zions Bank in Utah communities surrounding the parks, and online for the general public beginning July 1 at utahsymphony.org/mighty5. Tickets, if still available, will also be distributed at performance gates.

EAGLE WILD MUSHROOM & WINE WEEKEND, AUG. 22-24 Now its seventh year, the Eagle Wild Mushroom & Wine Weekend has grown from a small, local gathering celebrating the exceptional foraging in and around the area, to a true mushroom and wild edibles festival. Enthusiasts will spend the weekend identifying, hunting, eating and learning about wild mushrooms and wild edibles, while also enjoying a wine pairing dinner created by local chefs highlighting wild edibles and local foods, as well as a Friday

night street party featuring local vendors, live music and beer from Bonfire Brewery. The event also includes mushroom and edibles tastings and educational presentations by foraging experts and lots of hiking. Before you go, be sure to pick up a copy of “Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms,” by cookbook author, co-president of the New York Mycological Society, and Crawford, Colo., resident Eugenia Bone. The book highlights the versatile ’shroom, which contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and possibly cancer-fighting properties. Bone examines the role of fungi as exotic delicacy, curative, poison and hallucinogen and ultimately discovers that a greater understanding of fungi is key to facing many challenges of the 21st century. “I came at mushrooms form a culinary point of view,” says Bone. “I grew up hunting them on a limited degree. When I came out to Colorado I started to find all this good territory with wild mushrooms. I wanted to know which ones I could eat and started to get into the basic biology at the same time. I traveled to mushroom festivals around the country and started to meet all the kooky (mushrooming) people, of which there are many, and reading up on the biology. I spent five years of serious research before I wrote (Mycophilia).”

cook them over a campfire, right? It’s camping season in Aspen and that means it’s time to step up the grilling and camping cuisine game. The best cookbook for outdoor dining in my library was released this spring and is a must for any foodie who wants to extend their skill beyond the kitchen walls. “The Great Outdoors Cookbook, Adventures in Cooking Under the Open Sky” combine favorite recipes and outdoor cooking wisdom from Sunset magazine food editors Margo True and Elaine Johnson. From backyard grilling to campfire feasts, this new cookbook is a sourcebook for outdoor cooking, offering step-by-step instruction, DIY projects, beautiful photos, and more than 175 recipes for outdoorsloving home cooks everywhere. With an introduction by chef Michael Chiarello, the book is organized around the places and ways we cook outdoors — the backyard, campsite, grill, smoker, and pizza oven (including one you can build yourself) — and draws on the long tradition of outdoor cooks in the West, from the Native Americans and cowboys of the Spanish ranchos to today’s glamcampers and backyard pizzaiolos. The book also supplies a resource guide featuring critical gear and the best ingredients, books, and building materials. Above all else, “The Great Outdoors Cookbook” offers readers a chance to discover — or rediscover — the joy of cooking in the fresh air.

G N I P P I FL OUT WINTER? SUMMER?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE THE SEASONS COLLIDE by JEANNE MCGOVERN

ON A TUESDAY MORNING IN LATE JUNE, the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Clubhouse is bustling with kids. It’s not an unusual scene for one of the Roaring Fork Valley’s largest youth organizations. But it’s summer, so the tools of the trade are a bit different. A group of young girls is wielding paintbrushes; a posse of teenage boys is decked out head-to-toe in mountain bike gear. But, over in one corner of the building, the skiers and snowboarders gather. For them, winter is still in season. They have skis and boots, helmets and goggles. Just down the I-70 corridor, the scene is much the same, as more than 100 kids descend upon Woodward at Copper with their chosen mode of transportation for a week of summer camp: mountain bikes, BMX bikes, scooters and, yes, skis and snowboards. The reason is simple: Here, in Colorado Ski Country, winter never ends — or at least the games we play on snow (or to ready ourselves for another season of sliding down snow) never really end. In Aspen, AVSC holds day camps all summer long with skiing and boarding in mind. Up until the most recent weeks, a small strip of snow was pushed and groomed and manicured to perfection on the front side of Buttermilk. Here, young skiers and riders practiced the tricks of their trades, pulling 360s, frontflips and other moves into an air bag — much to the delight of passing motorists, who could catch a glimpse of these antics as they made their daily commute to work. Now that the snow has melted, the skiing action has moved to the trampoline. A recent Saturday morning saw a handful of kids jumping, twisting and flipping out on the club’s SuperTramp — a 14by-14 foot canvas of fun (and one of less than 10 such supertramps in the world today). At Copper Mountain, part of the mountain is still skiable. Like Aspen, the snow-moving crew has created a winter wonderland in the heat of summer by meticulously moving the white stuff around.

There are boxes and rails, jumps and a giant air bag for skiers and snowboarders to ply their trade. Under the direction of dozens of coaches, campers — both overnight and day camp options are available for kids ages 8 to 18 — learn “progressions” with their personal end-game always in sight, whether that’s mastering the rainbow rail, conquering a 360 or nailing a backflip. And when the snow gets too slushy to ski, it’s off to the Barn at Woodward. It’s like AVSC’s SuperTramp times six — and on steroids. There are tramps of all sizes, some with foam pits to flip into, some with pads to bounce off of. There is also an entire indoor pump track and ramp system, where skiers and boarders can strap on parks skis or park boards (think skis/boards on roller blades) and work their way from small ramps to small jumps to huge leaps into foam pits. In short, it’s an endless winter. And for kids of all ages who just can’t get enough of skiing and boarding, it’s why we live in Colorado.

AIR TIME I’m a bag lady. Not that kind of bag lady. Rather, the kind who jumps off snow into a giant air bag. Granted, I only pointed ‘em down and took the leap of faith a few times, but I think it’s safe to call myself such. But unlike those who I was with at Woodward at Copper this week — like my 11-year-old son, pictured here on “Mustache Day” — I am not young, nor am I a park rat. Sure, I’m a skier. And, back in the day, I might have been called gutsy. But really, I’m just your average middle-aged Aspenite. As one friend put it: “I’m chortling at the image of mommy flying over the air bag like a 40-something rag doll!” Rag doll is an apt description. I did not attempt at 360, or even a 180, let alone a backflip, frontflip or any other kind of flip. To be honest, my heart was racing enough just speeding down the snow and off the jump. But the landing — while not pretty (think Superman faceplant with the resulting double-heel ejection, and you’ll get the picture) — was exhilarating. My adrenaline was pumping and I felt like had a stepped way beyond my comfort zone because,

well, I did. Of course I had to stop after a few jumps; I was tired — we had spent the hour before hiking up and down the snow mastering boxes and rails (OK, trying to master them), and there was still an afternoon ahead of trampoline jumps into foam pits, roller-skiing into foam pits and such crazy feats to conquer. And I did, for the most part. And, in the end, I learned the benefit of being a 40-something rather than a kid when it comes to a summer’s day spent skiing: An ice-cold beer at the base of the mountain.

MORE FOOD & WINE ASPENITES AND OUT-OFTOWNERS all had a great time at the 2014 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. The August 2014 issue of Town & Country Magazine has a full page about the Aspen Art Museum. There is a very very glamorous photo of museum MARY director Heidi ESHBAUGH Zuckerman Jacobs0n HAYES with artist Teresita Fernandez along with photos of artwork and a model of the new museum. The article states that Heidi felt the need to create a new Aspen Art Museum in keeping with world-class Aspen. According to the article, Jacobson dreamed of turning the place from “a museum in a destination into a destination museum.” A new book, titled “Cape Cod Modern,” has just been published. There are wonderful stories and photos of the fun-loving days along the beaches of New England by Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer and other members of the Bauhaus, who built many of the modern homes along the shore. There are also many photos of a modern home built by Hayden Walling, a member of the group. He was the father of Christopher Walling. Undercurrent...Party season in Aspen is in full swing!

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

by ANDREW TRAVERS

FUNNY GIRL AT A RECENT REHEARSAL at the Red Brick Center for the Arts, as the cast runs through the second act of the new Sandy Rustin play, “The Cottage,” actors from other Theatre Aspen shows sit around the periphery smirking, giggling and belly-laughing at the show’s farcical melodrama. Rustin and director Don Stephenson look on and take notes. There’s a palpable energy in the room — a mix between the thrill of creation and the snickering joy of cutting up in the back of a high school classroom. Stephenson and his team are having fun. “If you’re doing a comedy it should be fun in there,” he explains after they wrap for the day. “Otherwise you’re kind of defeating your purpose. So I try to set a tone in the room that’s fun and relaxed, so everybody can do their best job. If you get all tight and worried it’s not going to be fun and it’s not going to be funny.” “The Cottage” play is a farcical sex comedy written in the cheeky style of English playwright Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.” Set in the English countryside in the 1920s, it follows the fallout after a woman reveals an affair to both her husband and her lover’s wife. “When I first read it, it was like Noel Coward had written it and put it in a drawer and someone had just found it,” says Stephenson. One key twist on Coward’s formula, however, is that the women in the play get to be funny. In Coward’s plays, Rustin notes, the women were “buffoons and eye candy.” “I thought, ‘I want to be in a show like that but I want to be the funniest. What would that look like,’” she says. Rustin is a longtime fan of Coward’s, she explains, but the play was actually inspired by a cartoon in The New Yorker depicting a woman draped over a chaise lounge and a disheveled man in a bowtie. Ten or so years back, she saw it, named the characters Sylvia and Beau, wrote a few pages of dialogue, and filed it away. Two years ago, when the second of her two young sons reached school age, she returned to it and wrote a first draft of “The Cottage” in a week’s time. A New York-based actress and improv comedian, Rustin played Babe in the 2008 Theatre Aspen production of “Crimes of the Heart,” and has since had success as a playwright

As an actor, Stephenson says, he’s at his best with a director who gives him clear instructions on the basics — where to stand and move and such — so that he can focus on his character’s inner workings. He tries to do the same with his actors, while keeping track of the big picture of the show and how its jokes land. “You don’t know what to do when you’re up there,” he says with a laugh. Discussing his approach to directing “The Cottage” on the lawn at the Red Brick, he spouted quotes from

readings of the play with her theater company — Midtown Direct Rep in New Jersey — along with a showcase in Queens, and it’s being staged by other regional theaters. But the Aspen production of “The Cottage” is the first full staging with which Rustin has been involved. “This has been my first chance to be in the room everyday and hear it and watch it get up on its feet moment to moment,” Rustin The lack of a precedent, says Stephenson, is both exciting and intimidating, because the next three weeks of performances here will create a template for future productions of the show. “This is the best part of it,” adds Rustin. “You have your own imagination of what it is, then you hand it over to the director and then he puts his layer of imagination on it, then you hand it to the designers and the actors and it’s their imagination on top of that and it’s awesome.”

Nancy Anderson stars in Theatre Aspen’s production of “The Cottage.”

Ollie

Meet Ollie. He is such a good boy. He only weighs 12 pounds but that doesn’t slow him down and it’s the perfect size for a good snuggle on your lap or next to you - one of Ollie’s favorite things to do! Rescued from a high kill shelter in New Mexico with 20 minutes to spare it’s hard to imagine how he ended up there. Approximately 2 years old Ollie is great with people and other dogs. He is living with a tiny old dog and a Border Collie and does great with both. He is playful, funny and affectionate - such a sweetie. He looks sort of like an Italian Greyhound/Chihuahua mix. His face is more Chi but he has long, thin, dainty legs and feet - very interesting looking. He is a smart boy, learned the doggie door right away and likes to be with his people. He LOVES his walks and enjoys all the sights and sounds. He is current on all his vaccinations, neutered, de-wormed and micro chipped. If you would like to meet this boy please fill out an Adoption Application on www.luckydayrescue.org or call Kelley on 970-379-4606.

BOOK REVIEW

‘JENNIFER, GWYNETH & ME’ AUTHOR AND celebrity-watcher Rachel Bertsche spent nearly a year emulating the lifestyles of several famous female stars, seeking contentment, productivity and better arms. Her new book, “Jennifer, Gwyneth & Me: The Pursuit of Happiness, One Celebrity at a Time,” is “The Happiness Project” meets People magazine. Most celebrities are graced with devotees and burdened with haters, and this book — like the A-listers it covers — will likely face both. Some will hail it as a fun, thought-provoking, selfimprovement memoir, while critics may call it self-indulgent and shallow. There may be some readers who find the idea of taking life advice from celebrities questionable, but Berstche — a journalist and former editor at Oprah Winfrey’s magazine — creates a voice that is self-deprecating and relatable Throughout the book, Bertsche asks why women (including herself) are

“Jennifer, Gwyneth & Me: The Pursuit of Happiness, One Celebrity at a Time” by Rachel Bertsche Ballantine Books

fascinated by celebrities and often see them as role models. Each of the eight chapters focuses on one celebrity’s particular assets and expertise, in an area the author would like to tackle to lift her self-esteem. Bertsche is thoughtful about her goals in the project, honest about her successes and failures, and reflective about the results. Bertsche’s experiment also suggests that even the fabulous are flawed. When trying to follow Gwyneth Paltrow’s food rules and cooking techniques, Bertsche points out the unrealistic amount of time and money the actress’ habits require, and fails her seven-day detox cleanse after two days of drinking a smoothie that tastes like “sweet earwax.” The book would have more teeth if Bertsche had been able to interview any of the celebrities she writes about to get their take on whether their choices and routines actually lead to happiness. Instead, she relies on Google searches,

magazine interviews and many assumptions for information. Woven into the narrative of her celebrity makeover, Bertsche shares intimate details, including her determination to get pregnant despite fertility problems. Although she knows she has much to be thankful for in her life, her candor about her professional and personal disappointments adds another layer to her story. Bertsche says her efforts have made her feel like a better version of herself. Sure, it took a little navel gazing and celebrity worship to get there, but maybe that’s what self-help for the selfie generation looks like. If you’ve ever had a celebrity girl crush, stick “Jennifer, Gwyneth & Me” in your beach bag. Bertsche is your people.

The answer to each starred clue must have two consecutive letters removed before it is written into the grid. These letters will move to a pair of circles elsewhere in the puzzle. (In all cases, new words will be formed.) The nine letter pairs, when properly arranged, will spell an appropriate answer at 72-Across.
