Detroit bankruptcy: Another case of right-wing mythology IT’S BEEN A long, tough road for Detroit, America’s once-proud motor city and home of the Motown soul revolution that successfully went headto-head with the British Invasion of the 1960s. Just in case you haven’t heard, Detroit is bankrupt. The state government, controlled by rightwing ideologues, forced the city into bankruptcy last week, and now are trying to blame the city’s poor financial performance on unions and high taxes. This particular bit of conservative mythology, has of course become the standard lie mouthed by the Tea Party and its hysterically misled minions in so many cases they can’t be counted. I note, in particular, the case of one Scott Walker, governor of the formerly progressive state of Wisconsin, where we once might have expected Walker’s kind of politics to end with us watching him roll out of town on a rail, covered in tar and feathers. But fear and lies, along with a badly eroded state education system, have taken a toll on a statewide electorate that not too long ago would have seen right through Walker’s self-aggrandizing mythology. Instead, he has managed to obliterate the state government’s unions and spell doom for whatever is left of the state’s human services, schools, police and fire departments — just about any type of public service other than the state’s bloated corporate welfare system. And it looks as though the same treatment is due for Detroit and its mother state, Michigan, where the facts might lead an unbiased observer to a far different conclusion than the one held by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and his corporate backers. To my way of thinking, Detroit is quite possibly the worst-hit city in the U.S. by the depredations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) — probably the single worst hangover from the Clinton presidency — and China’s winning of the Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status

(formerly known as the Most Favored Nation trading status), two policies that have contributed mightily to the crumbling of our national industrial sector. Detroit is also, quite possibly, the one city most undermined by corporate malfeasance and incompetence, as evidenced by the collapse of the auto industry there and the bailout of GM and Chrysler by U.S. taxpayers. All of that — NAFTA, PNTR, the collapse of the auto industry — can be laid at the door of multinational corporate irresponsibility. Maybe it’s the off-shoring of jobs at such a rate that our national unemployment rate will henceforth be considered “normal” at anywhere from 6 to 8 percent. Or the fact that corporations are most determined to accomplish one central task — enrich the managerial class, and impoverish the working class. Whatever, the cause of our national malaise is not corrupt unionism, though that has been the message hammered into us by right-wing corporate apologists for decades. It is not pensions for people who have devoted their lives to their careers and earning a living, with a promise of a financial cushion in their declining years. No, the cause is unalloyed corporate greed, corporate cronyism with Congress and successive administrations in Washington, D.C., and, put simply, the desire by the corporations to displace such inconvenient ideals as democracy and human rights with the only thing corporations really understand — the bottom line (interestingly enough, my fingers first typed that phrase as, “the bottom lie.”) We shall see, of course, how this all pans out, but one thing is for sure — the bankruptcy of Detroit is not likely to be a boost to Gov. Snyder’s political ambitions, which are said to include a bid for the presidency in 2016. At least, I hope not.

FESTIVAL CARBONDALE’S MOUNTAIN FAIR has more than a little history to it — 42 years of hippies, corn dogs, pie-eating, and the notorious night when the members of String Cheese Incident slept behind the stage, unaware they actually had hotel rooms for the night. This year’s event celebrates an even longer history, as Mountain Fair honors the Native American presence in the Roaring Fork Valley. In attendance all weekend, Friday through Sunday, July 26-28 in Sopris Park, will be Roland McCook, chief of the Northern Ute tribe, who will give the opening blessing on Friday afternoon. Sunday’s festivities open with a performance of Native American dancing and drumming. That still leaves plenty of room for other distinctively Mountain Fair-type cultural events: hulahooping, wood-splitting, crafts shopping, drum circles. The music lineup includes funk band Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, folk duo the Shook Twins, and local acts the Sixty Sevens, the Mile Markers and Velma and the Heart Tones.

The 42nd Carbondale Mountain Fair takes place Friday through Sunday, July 26-28, in Carbondale’s Sopris Park.

The column has been published in The Aspen Times dating back to the 1950s, and inclusion in it remains the sine qua non for status as a local socialite. But the numerous snapshots of well-dressed people grinning for the camera has probably obscured the fact that Hayes has been an important photographer, Aspen photographer Mary Eshbaugh conveying in vivid Hayes will be honored at the Red Brick Center for the Arts’ Annual Artist black and white images what everyday Tribute on Sunday, July 28 at Syzygy Aspen life was like several decades ago. restaurant. OPERA IN A PRECONCERT INTRODUCTION this past Friday night, Aspen Music Festival president Alan Fletcher acknowledged that not everyone likes Benjamin Britten as much as he does. The comment drew good-humored cheer: this summer’s festival is heavy on the 20th-century British composer, and there has been chatter that the programming is behind low turnout at some events. But the perspective on Britten might soon change. Fletcher’s comments also included a pitch for the centerpiece of the Britten The opera “Peter retrospective: Grimes,” by Benjamin Britten, a semi-staged will have a semiproduction of “Peter Grimes,” staged production on Saturday, July the 1945 thriller of an opera 27 at the Aspen about social justice for those Music Festival. outside the mainstream. Henry and Marge Stein attended concerts inside the original tent and helped to establish the Music Associates of Aspen. Photo circa 1954.

HENRY STEIN’S COMMUNITY GIFT My childhood pathway from home to school passed Henry

Stein’s office on Mill Street, in the building that now houses the Cantina. I stopped often to gaze through the large plate-glass window at a life-sized bronze casting of a cowboy on a horse. I knew nothing about it, but unlike other downtown store window scenes, I recognized that it was there for me to enjoy rather than to entice me inside to spend my money. The bronze was Henry Stein’s understated gift to the community. It was a Charles Russell bronze of the quality you see in Western art museums today. Although the window was usually in need of washing, Stein had positioned the bronze so that passers-by could view it without requiring that they enter his office to do so; he shared his art treasure with all who stopped at the window. Today Stein would be honored as an environmental champion of recycling; however, his recycling business, started in Chicago in the 1940s, was not created for environmental reasons. It was an innovative, lucrative entrepreneurship that gathered metal to salvage and re-forge. After World War II, the military sold tons of no-longer-useful equipment.

Also, he expanded his metal recycling business at the time when even cheap iron and steel production was unable to keep up with the demands of a racing economy. Having succeeded in business, the Steins joined the Chicago migration to Aspen initiated by Walter Paepcke. They bought ranch land — White Horse Springs in

was plagued with giardia; entering partnerships that reopened several Aspen mines; and promoting an underground storage business for investors who needed to store commodities for future sales. Henry’s and his wife Marge helped to initiate local financial support for the Music Associates of Aspen. When Walter Paepcke’s 1954 spat with musicians threatened to end

the growing music component of the Aspen Institute, the Steins joined a small group of enthusiastic donors who guaranteed funding of the Music Festival as it split from the Institute and formed its own organization, supporting a music festival as well as a music school. Marge, an original board member, served continuously for decades. After years of community admiration of the Russell bronze, a thief broke through the window one night and made off with the prized cowboy. The event shocked a community who had taken Stein’s “museum” for granted. The crime became one of several reference markers that divided Old Aspen from New Aspen, as the trusted community had been corralled by the realities of more commonplace cities. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn@comcast.net.

WINEINK

WORDS to DRINK BY

AND THE WINE BLOG WINNERS ARE ... WHILE I LOVE writing WineInk, I must confess that sometimes the only thing that gets me to my laptop is the motivation of a deadline. My dear editor, Jeanne McGovern at the Aspen Times Weekly, knows too well my propensity for flirting with the final “e” in the word deadline. Surely she understands that there are weeks (especially in the lazy, hazy days of summer) where if she did not, uhmm, “pressure” me, I might not make my quota of 1,000 or so words per issue. The loss if I did not file would, of course, be mine alone, so KELLY J. HAYES I thank her for both her extreme patience and her unerring ability to make sense of my metaphoric scribbles I point this out because there are a number of people out there who, sans the incentive of a deadline, write about wine simply to get their thoughts on paper or, as the case may be, on screen. These people are called bloggers. While some are driven by the desire for gold, girls and land (none of which accrue to the lowly wine writer by the way), the majority are spurred by their personal passion for wine. According to Lettie Teague, wine columnist for the Wall Street Journal, there are close to 1,500 bloggers out there who, unencumbered by the wrath of editors, tickle the keyboards to get their thoughts on wine out to the world on a daily, weekly or sometimes semiyearly basis. The vast majority of these people don’t make a dime and their return on investment can be counted by the rancorous retorts left in the response boxes at the bottom of their posts. Ah, the purity and rewards of passion. Like seemingly all movements that have, shall we say, a cult-like following — and I think a group of 1,500 passionate people with computers who write irregularly about wine could be loosely described as “cult-like” — there has emerged a series of awards, sort of an “Academy Awards of…,” to honor those who craft these columns. They are called, drum please ... “The Wine Blog Awards.” And a rim-shot here for the creative name. Kidding aside, I think the idea of recognizing people who are committed

enough to sit down and write about wine on the basis of their passion is a noble one. As the awards benefit the industry, while simultaneously introducing those of us who care about blogs to new talent and new sources for information, they are a worthy endeavor. Bravo. The noble idea was conceived in 2007 by Tom Wark, who is a respected marketing/public relations professional in the wine industry. He is perhaps best known outside of Napa Valley for, you guessed it, his wine blog. “Tom Warks’ Fermentation: The Daily Wine Blog” (http://fermentationwineblog.com) is a great daily source for information about the industry and fresh ideas and opinions about the current state of wine. I highly recommend bookmarking it. In 2010, Wark turned the administration of the idea over to The Wine Bloggers Conference. And in 2011, his blog won both the “Best Industry Blog” and the “Best Overall Wine Blog” honors at the conference. Coincidence? I think…well, it really doesn’t matter what I think. The current concept calls for the public to nominate blogs and individual posts for awards in nine categories The nominations are vetted by “a variety of judges with strong backgrounds and experience in the wine industry and social media” who cull the list down to five finalists in each category. These are then re-submitted to we, the public, who can vote online for the winners. Sort of. We, the public, are weighted at 50 percent of the vote and the aforementioned judges are also weighted at 50 percent. So be it. In any event, in June the winners were announced and, despite the somewhat awkward judging procedure and the propensity for bloggers to lobby for votes via their own blogs and Twitter, the results were pretty terrific. As a regular reader of HoseMaster of Wine (http://hosemasterofwine. blogspot.com), one of the funniest reads on the Web about wine or any other subject, I was pleased to see Ron Washam get his due. Washam, like many bloggers, rants and raves about the injustices that he sees in the world of wine. A SHORE THING

FOR 10 YEARS, BUTCH’S LOBSTER SHACK HAS BROUGHT A TASTE OF MAIN TO MIDLAND AVENUE “WE’RE GOING to New England!” I exclaim, peeling out of Aspen with a new buddy riding shotgun. A recent East Coast transplant like myself, he looks at me warily. “Don’t worry,” I assure him. “We’ll arrive in less than an hour.” I’ve promised him a succulent seafood lunch that will transport him to the shore. What I haven’t mentioned: I don’t have access to a private jet. But I do have AMIEE AMANDA WHITE a plan. And so I can only BEAZLEY RAE smirk as we zoom past the airport on Highway 82. One might assume that scoring an authentic lobster roll in the Roaring Fork Valley — some 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean — is like finding a message in a bottle adrift at sea. But longtime locals know where to best enjoy the quintessential seaside snack: Butch’s Lobster Shack, which has been stationed in downtown Basalt for the past 10 summers. Just as Bostonians seek solace in the warm sands, cool breezes and unlimited lobster feasts of southern Maine, for some Aspenites a trip downvalley to Butch’s is a summer rite of passage. When I pull into the parking lot of the Phillips 66 gas station, my captive appears even more confused. Then he

spies it: a tiny red-and-white shack that looks like it should be sited on Cape Cod rather than here along Midland Avenue. It’s Friday at 1:30 p.m., and the place is bustling. Soon enough, two stools are free and we slide up to the counter. Seeing other patrons clinking bottles, we order a round of beers. “You gotta go next door for that,” says our hostess Jody, pointing to Jimbo’s Liquor’s across the parking lot. In a minute we return to our perches, tallboys in tow. Between sips, we slurp briny oysters that landed in Colorado by way of North Carolina just hours ago. Heat waves shimmy from the scorched asphalt, but we stay cool beneath the bar’s awning. Finally, Jody pushes twin paper boats toward us. Inside each is a charred-edge, buttered bun, topped with a whole Romaine leaf and a glossy mound of pink lobster meat flecked with fresh dill and bound with just enough mayo to hold it all together. “Goddamn, that’s good,” my sidekick says between mouthfuls. It’s true. I chomp down on crispy, crunchy, creamy layers, close my eyes, and imagine the call of seagulls in place of purring motor vehicles. In that moment, we could be on the beach. We could be back home. Captain Butch Darden works his magic on many other fruits of the sea: steamer clams, belly clams, shrimp, scallops, calamari. He flash-fries codfish and chips, Baja-style fish tacos and crab cakes; simmers stockpots of clam chowder and seafood bisque; and, of course, steams whole lobsters weighing up to 2 pounds. Darden’s preparations are refreshingly simple, highlighting the fresh catch he receives two of the four days Butch’s is open. Other fare include onion rings, fried ’shrooms, and the Landlubbers Cheeseburg Basket, made with beef from a small farm down the road. It’s popular with picky kids, perhaps more so with parents at just $10, including fries and coleslaw. Darden’s favorite creation pays tribute to a former Aspen restaurateur now making waves in Nantucket: Shannon’s Shrimp, which are dipped in egg and sautéed in a smooth garlic-white wine cream sauce.

Butch Lobster Shack in Basalt is a must-stop for those seeking an East Coast seafood fix.

“This is New England food,” Darden says proudly. “Shore food.” Darden has been slinging shellfish since 1979, when the owner of The Tippler — that watering hole, then located at the foot of Aspen Mountain — agreed to let him open an oyster bar during ski season. “I went to the Butcher’s Block, bought four dozen oysters, an oyster knife, lemons, and cocktail sauce, and practiced opening oysters,” the soft-spoken Darden says with an easy laugh. It was a hit. Over the next four summers, he returned to his native Massachusetts to work a two-month gig as a lobster diver in Provincetown. Back in Aspen with a newfound reverence for the crustaceans, he began expanding his repertoire. Eight winters later he upgraded to a 600-square-foot tent at the Grand Aspen Hotel. But it wasn’t until Darden moved his oyster bar to the Timberline Restaurant in Snowmass in 1992 that his current mobile lobster bar — a 100-square-foot craft custombuilt by a carpenter in Parachute and outfitted with a full kitchen, gas, plumbing, and electricity — was born. “I’d bring it to Basalt on Fridays and Saturdays, sell lobsters and shrimp,” Darden says. When business in Snowmass ebbed dramatically,

Darden jumped ship. But his seasonal lobster shack survives. “It doesn’t make a lot of money, but it’s a social thing,” Darden says. He surveys a gaggle of regulars who’ve gathered at café tables here on the grassy lawn. “It’s a labor of love,” Darden maintains. “Last couple of years, I wasn’t sure I was gonna do this anymore.” He pauses, and then smiles at the sight of diners tucking happily into his roadside fare. “But it’s comin’ back.” New England native Amanda Rae will gladly trade beach for mountains, as long as she can get a great lobster roll. FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by JEANNE MCGOVERN

NEED TO KNOW 1 ounce Rangpur gin 1 ounce blueberry moonshine 1/2 ounce lime juice 4 ounces seltzer water 1/4 cup fresh blueberries Fresh mint, to garnish Into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, combine the gin, moonshine and lime juice. Shake well, then strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with seltzer water and stir just to combine. Top with the blueberries and mint.

BLUE RICKEY SPRITZER On a recent trip to Maui, we noticed an abundance of lime trees surrounding our condo. The limes were perfect — lush green and so juicy your hands were covered by just holding one —and thus became an inspiration to my husband, who was tiring of the standard fruity cocktails we were whipping up. Lime Rickey’s were the drink of our vacation. Longing for a taste of that slice of paradise, I came across another Rickey recipe while searching The Associated Press wire. As journalist Alison Ladman writes, “Not sure what to make of the many moonshines showing up on shelves at your local liquor store? We have you covered. Obviously, it’s easy enough to chill and sip it straight up. But if you want something with a bit more punch, we crafted four moonshine cocktails to get you started.” Among them is the Blue Rickey Spritzer, which you can bet I will be trying this weekend. Gunilla Asher is taking a break from the bar scene, so we’re turning this page over to you. Email jmcgovern@aspentimes.com with what cocktails you’re mixing, what libations you’re drinking, what tastes have tempted your tastebuds and we’ll share them with our readers. Cheers!

AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF ALT-COUNTRY

CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS REVIVE BLACK STRING MUSIC

Carolina Chocolate Drops — Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Hubby Jenkins, left to right — make their local debut Thursday, July 25 at PAC3 in Carbondale.

Hubby jenkins, of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, speaks of his path to membership in the band as “my own educational journey.” Jenkins, 27, is fairly new to the group; Carolina Chocolate Drops formed in 2005 around singers/multi-instrumentalists Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons, while Jenkins joined up early in 2011. But he has also covered much ground in his learning. SINCE HE JOINED the band, the Chocolate Drops have opened for Bob Dylan; landed the song “Daughter’s Lament” on the best-selling soundtrack to “The Hunger Games” movie, alongside tracks by Taylor Swift and Arcade Fire; and released the album “Leaving Eden,” produced

by Buddy Miller, whose other recent projects include albums by Richard Thompson and Shawn Colvin. Carolina Chocolate Drops’ current tour includes mainstage appearances at a handful of major folk festivals: the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and

Rockygrass in Lyons. There will also be a hop across the ocean, for festival sets in Denmark and Finland. (Squeezed in is a relatively intimate show at Carbondale’s PAC3 on Thursday, July 25.) Despite all the experience, Jenkins still has a ways to go in his educational mission, though most of that has to do with teaching the audience. The music tradition that Carolina Chocolate Drops are exploring requires some explanation. Tell someone that your band plays music rooted in the American South of the first half of the 20th century, and that the instrumentation features banjos, fiddles and acoustic guitars, and almost any knowledgeable listener would assume you play bluegrass.

“I tell people all the time, ‘Hey, we don’t play bluegrass. We play an older form of American music,” Jenkins said. Another tidbit he finds himself repeating — that the banjo, that emblem of rural white culture, is of West African origin.

SO MUCH MUSIC, SO LITTLE TIME A FRIEND OF MINE who lived a few decades in Manhattan and more or less lived inside the music scene there, once commented that Aspen had more music than New York City. It’s not true, exactly, but it was easy to see some kernel of truth in that. If accessibility of the music is factored in, then yes, it is likely a body could take in more concerts in Aspen, or the whole Roaring Fork Valley, than one could in New York. The Carbondale Mountain Fair alone, set for Friday through Sunday, July 26-28 in ’Bonedale’s Sopris Park, is a musical feast on its own, with music from morning to night. Friday’s lineup includes the Sixty Sevens, a local band led by guitarist Josh Phillips, formerly of the 12Bar Flies and Big Swifty; and singer Paula Nelson, daughter of Willie. Saturday begins with the unique Lipbone Redding, and also features up and coming folk duo the Shook Twins, the local Mile Markers, and the African-oriented Paa Kow’s By All Means Band, led by Ghana-born drummer Kow. Sunday’s music includes the local women of Velma and the Heart Tones, the Cambodian Space Project, and La Sonora Dinamitas, with the New York soul ensemble Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds closing down the fair. Soulful rapper J Boog hits the Fanny Hill stage in Snowmass for a free show on Thursday, July 25; the following Thursday it’s Louisiana blues with guitarist Tab Benoit. Tickets for the Sunday, July 28 Belly Up show by Minneapolis hip-hoppers Atmosphere were snatched up immediately; the show is sold out. Those who Singer LeAnn Rimes makes her Belly Up debut on Aug. 10. crave hip-hop sounds will have to wait till August, when north California group Souls of Mischief bring their ’93 Till Infinity tour to the club (Aug. 7), Chali 2Na hits Belly Up with his high-energy rap (Aug. 14), and the duo Blackalicious returns (Aug. 24). Other highlights on the Belly Up schedule: two nights of Brit Floyd doing their spot-on Pink Floyd tribute (Wednesday and Thursday, July 31-Aug. 1); rising rockers Truth & Salvage Co. (Aug. 8); country singer LeAnn Rimes (Aug. 10); the John Butler Trio (Aug. 15-16); Michael Franti (Aug. 19); and Three Dog Night (Aug. 23). Malian guitar great Vieux Farka Touré spices up Jazz Aspen’s JAS Café with a pair of shows on Aug. 7. For some alt-classical sounds at the Aspen Music Festival, Jonathan Haas leads the Aspen Percussion Ensemble into its annual frenzy of drums antics on Monday, July 29 at Harris Hall, and bassist Edgar Meyer does his annual recital, with violinist Katie Hyun and cellist Mihai Marica, on Aug. 3. PAC3 has piano rocker Leon Russell on Aug. 16, and Texas swing kings Asleep at the Wheel on Aug. 29. I’m sure there’s more. Wish I could keep track of it all.

The style the Chocolate Drops play has similar roots to bluegrass; both trace back to Appalachian string bands. But where bluegrass was the white man’s take on the string band, the Chocolate Drops follow from a different lineage, the African-American version of the string band. And where the story of bluegrass is fairly well known, dating back to pioneers Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, the black string band is relatively hidden. Even hardcore jazz and blues aficionados are probably unaware of some of the facts. “Charlie Patton played with a fiddle player. Muddy Waters was in a string band,” Jenkins said of two noted blues guitarists. “For them, it’s a first-hand experience. They were around string band music.” The history of black string bands was largely lost in the migration of black Southerners who moved north in the early part of the 20th century — a massive relocation of a population, as Jenkins notes, involving 3 million people. The move wasn’t only from south to north, but also from rural to urban. In big cities like Chicago, the music became electrified, and Muddy Waters dropped the string band to plug in and play Chicago style. “In the diaspora of blacks moving from the South to northern cities, they consciously or unconsciously lost their Southern roots for a more modern thing, a more urban thing. Which at the time meant electric blues, Chicago blues,” Jenkins said on a day off from the beach in Truro, on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod. Jenkins added that the rise of bands like the Rolling Stones, who were becoming enormously popular by playing a white, young, electric, British interpretation of American blues, made it that much easier to look ahead and forget about where the music had come from. Also, according to Jenkins, the record industry created distinct stylistic categories — race records on one side, string band music on the other — and the race records, by singers like Ray Charles, were on the right side of history. The idea of the black string band, playing a style that had much in common with bluegrass, but with more of a feel of blues, Southern gospel and even ties to Africa, got swept away. Jenkins grew up in Brooklyn, and even though he had relatives in Carolina who he spent time with and was interested in music early on, this was a story he knew nothing about. As a kid, he played alto saxophone before switching to cello. As a teenager he settled on bass guitar, playing in “crappy bands that played a lot of Dylan-influenced music.”

Right after high school, Jenkins began digging further back in time. Discovering Skip James and Blind Willie Johnson, who played blues with a country influence, he realized there were whole hidden realms of music history. “Growing up in Bed-Stuy” — the Brooklyn neighborhood of BedfordStuyvesant, which has produced an inordinate number of rap artists — “you hear a lot of hip-hop,” Jenkins said. “For me, that whole education trip was big: ‘Wow, black people don’t just rap.’ Learning about black roots, black history in America that’s not really known, not really told, that was a big exploration.” Jenkins wasn’t alone in this cultural excavation. Rhiannon Giddens, who had studied opera singing at Oberlin Conservatory, and Dom Flemons, an Arizona-born poet, were looking for new means of expression. Giddens took up fiddle, while Flemons began learning clawhammer banjo. In 2005, the two attended the Black Banjo Gathering in North Carolina and met Joe Thompson, an aged, old-time fiddler who would become their mentor. Giddens and Flemons formed the Carolina Chocolate Drops in the mid-’00s. In 2010, they released “Genuine Negro Jig,” a collection of old songs including “Kissin’ and Cussin’” and “Peace Behind the Bridge.” The album, their debut on the Nonesuch label, earned a Grammy in the best traditional folk category. A few years ago, Jenkins, who had been busking in New York City, met the Chocolate Drops through mutual friends. Jenkins’ specific skills were less important than his overall musical interests. “They said, ‘Oh, black guy who plays string instruments — great. Can you play the fiddle?’” Jenkins recalled. “I told them no. But they said, ‘OK, you want to join the band anyway?’” As Carolina Chocolate Drops, whose touring ensemble is rounded out by cellist Leyla McCalla, have traveled the world, Jenkins has noticed that the group that has the greatest interest in old black string-band music is young, white music lovers, the kind that might also gravitate toward bluegrass. The band has played the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Jenkins likens it to the Delta blues revival of the 1960s. “That music survived because it was discovered by white college students,” he said. But he isn’t too dismayed; at least the music is being heard and discovered. “There are so many old songs out there that are so universal,” he said. “We want to make sure we keep those songs alive for people.”

AT HOME ON THE RANGE A LONG WAY FROM ROUGHING IT, GUEST RANCHES PUT SOME GIDDY-UP IN YOUR GETAWAY by LINDA HAYES and KELLY J. HAYES

PHOTO COURTESY OF SORREL RIVER RANCH

There’s nothing more American than a ranch. From the early pioneers who settled the Wild West to modern-day ranchers raising cattle and horses on enormous spreads of open land, ranches have pulled at our heartstrings with the promise of a richer, more rewarding life. But for most of us, the idea of the ranching lifestyle is just a romantic concept. Less often than we’d like to admit do we city slickers (Aspenites included) get out amongst it. Rarely do we settle down for a meal alongside folks in cowboy hats and boots and belts with big buckles, grinning from ear-to-ear with the satisfaction of a good day in the saddle or on the river. More often, we city slickers (Aspenites included) like to have our taste of adventure served with a heap of luxurious amenities on the side. To cowboy up by day, then, after gourmet meals that in no way resemble campfire grub, nestle into downy beds. Lucky thing, that style of ranch experience is just a few-hour drive away. A DESERT OASIS: SORREL RIVER RANCH MOAB, UTAH

Luxurious accomodations and gourmet meals are all a part of the Sorrel River Ranch experience.

CHANCES ARE you’ve driven past Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa on the way to Moab on Highway 128, or floated past it on a kayak or raft trip down the Colorado River. Passing by, you likely noted its postcard-perfect setting, a 160-acre plot of land on a verdant river bend with spectacular Convent and Perriot Mesas seemingly close enough to touch. You may have even made a mental note to return someday to check it out, or pull in for a stay. Well, what are you waiting for? Like many of the luxe, resortlike ranches scattered around the American West these days, Sorrel River Ranch has roots. It started out in 1903 as a small homestead built by Fred and Ida Stearns, who used a single-plow horse to help farm enough land to provide for their family and livestock. What remains of their tworoom, lodgepole farmhouse still stands on the property today, surrounded by a well-tended herb and flower garden. The ranch has changed hands several times since then. Elizabeth Rad owns the whole kit-and-caboodle now, and it’s been gussied up and a full itinerary of activities have been added to keep you occupied from sunrise till sunset, both of which light up the surrounding red rock formations with an otherworldly orange glow.

Jul y 25 - 3 1 , 2013

Guest rooms and suites (some as large as 1,000 square feet) are within a collection of delightful cabins set along the river, and each has a pair of rocking chairs on a covered front porch and a “Welcome to the Ranch” sign on the door. Interiors are Western chic: Hardwood plank floors and log beam ceilings; four-poster log-framed beds dressed with fresh white linens and plump pillows; cozy sitting areas; mini-kitchens with everything you need; pocture windows framing river and red rock views. While you might think the name “Sorrel” refers to the iconic red rock cathedrals and sandstone arches that are its neighbors, it was actually inspired by the rusty-red hue of American Quarter Horses, a breed well-suited for Western riding. The ranch’s equestrian program, led by Emily Hutton, is a major draw, with a handsome herd of 30 or so horses at the ready. You can saddle up for easy morning or afternoon trail rides through Ida Gulch and up and over the rolling foothills below nearby Perriot Mesa, or the more challenging Ridge Top ride during which you can take in knock-out views.

TOWERING ROCKS If you’d rather sightsee by foot, early-morning guided hikes to spiraling Fischer Towers (a short drive away) will get you out and about on trails that wind amongst significant red rock formations. Along the way, you can ogle climbers making their way to the pinnacle, and if it looks familiar

it’s likely because it was featured in a Citibank commercial where local pro climber Katie Brown makes the accent to a refrain of “Somebody left the gate open.” Wow. Back at the ranch, far tamer activities, such as tennis on a pair of outdoor courts, swimming in the riverside pool and yoga at the river’s edge, abound during the day. Another way to go is to simply book a sugar and bourbon scrub, or sage and lavender soak, at the ranch’s peaceful little Colorado River Spa. Beyond that, the ranch’s super helpful guest experience staff can arrange for everything from float trips to jeep tours to BASE jumping adventures around the area. Sporty Moab is just 17 miles away.

DINING IN THE DESERT Eventually, often really, you’ll wind up hungry. Chef Henry Christian has it covered. Pulling from local sources (not to mention the ranch’s formidable greenhouse and farm that sit just inside the entry drive) and ordering things like impeccably fresh seafood from Hawaii, or other shores, he turns out remarkable dishes. For breakfast, there are pancakes made with Utah’s Darigold Farms Sustainable buttermilk, or huevos rancheros topped with fresh tomatochile sauce. Lunchtime favorites are arugula and dandelion salad with local Castle Valley chevre and heirloom beets, or free-range chicken sandwiches on fresh-baked focaccia. Dinner means garden-fresh vegetable carpaccio flavored with herb-infused

oils, Heritage Valley chicken with Utah cherry vinaigrette and, if you’re lucky, ocean-fresh sashimi — all are served in the lovely River Grill Restaurant in the ranch’s main lodge, or on its sunny riverfront deck. Feeling refreshed and pampered, and a little more in touch with your wild side, you’re bound to return home with a smile, and with a little red dust on your hiking shoes.

A MOUNTAIN RETREAT: SMITH FORK RANCH CRAWFORD, COLO.

JUST OVER THE HILL from Aspen as the magpie flies, or a short two-and-a-half-hour drive, is a jewel called Smith Fork Ranch. Nestled in a picturesque valley outside of the tiny town of Crawford, Colo., extraordinary scenery and location are combined with rustic authenticity and modern-day refinement to provide the quintessential mountain western experience. Driving the dirt road along the Smith Fork River to the ranch, the real world is left in a cloud of trailing dust. Passing under the dramatic Needle Rock, and gazing at the snowcapped peaks of the West Elk Range, it becomes clear that it is possible to find unspoiled Rocky Mountain vistas if you just get off the beaten path. Marley Hodgson and his wife, Linda, spent 30 years in New York, where Marley created the enormously successful Trafalgar and Ghurka brands of menswear and bags. Looking for a change, they began scouring the Rockies in search of the perfect property to create the perfect guest ranch. They found their Shangri-La at the run-down “Bar X Bar.” Rechristening it Smith Fork Ranch, Marley, Linda and their family set about restoring the property and after two-and-a-half years began accepting guests. The experience begins with the lovingly updated cabins and original ranch house. Wood plank floors, featherbeds and Indian blankets give the rooms style, and each is unique and luxurious, a result of the attention to detail that the Hodgsons insisted upon. So inviting are the rooms that it is tempting to slip your boots off and simply listen to the river, never leaving. But then you might miss the soul of the ranch experience.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Smith Fork Ranch’s raison d’être is to provide guests with the classic Rocky Mountain outdoor experience. Start with the trout fishing. Five stocked ponds are on the property and three miles of the Smith Fork flow through the ranch. The big waters of the Gunnison, just a few miles away, are available for guests who wish

Rustic charm coupled with an uptown culinary program make Smith Fork Ranch the perfect ranch getaway.

to head to the bottom of the Black Canyon for their fishing. The fishing pavilion, set just below the Ranch House, is as stocked as the ponds; Sage fly rods, Ross reels, Simms waders and boots are all available for guests to use. So diverse are the waters that it is possible for anglers to accomplish the SFR “Grand Slam,” which is catching all four species of trout during a visit. Of course, a ranch requires an equestrian program and this one is world-class. With more than 40 American Quarter Horses and Appaloosas on site, the staff works with each guest to find just the right horse for each rider. Options include group trail rides into the Gunnison National Forest, barrel racing in the 250-foot arena, and magnificent sunset rides above the ranch with views of Needle Rock to the west. There is also a Sporting Clays facility that allows shooters the opportunity to shoulder 20- or 12-gauge Italian Beretta shotguns and “ready, aim, fire” at the clay targets that simulate flight patterns of game birds. Mountain bike trails abound and the hiking trails are amongst the finest in the state. There is also a longbow archery range and a parcourse-like trail with targets to challenge archers. And at the end of the day, a massage awaits. Be it in the quaint and comforting massage room, or under the shade of a tree in the “Massage Outpost” tent, a Swedish, Sport or Hot Stone Massage salves the muscles and soothes the mind.

Jul y 25 - 3 1 , 2013

WINE AND DINE All of which lead to dinner. If there were a single element that puts Smith Fork Ranch on a pedestal above all others it would be their extensive culinary program. Under the auspices of chef Seth Bateman, who came to the ranch following stints as a sous chef at Napa’s Meadowood Resort and as chef at the Lodge at Torrey Pines, Smith Fork has become a culinary destination To find “local ingredients,” Bateman needs only to walk out his back door where gardener Alama Roberts has created a veritable Garden of Eden, featuring the finest and freshest veggies and herbs. Bateman also sources local meats from area ranchers, uses fish flown in daily and creates spectacular repasts using his vast culinary techniques. Not only do dinners stand out, but all three squares at Smith Fork Ranch are impeccable. And the picnic baskets and afternoon cookies are, well, to die for. Bateman’s food is complemented by

a Wine Spectator Award-winning wine list and a fully stocked bar. Ending the day and beginning the evening with a “Campfire Manhattan,” made with High West Double Rye, on the wooden deck above the flowing river is a lifetime memory. Sitting down to order wines from around the world that have been expertly picked by general manager Jim Nielson is a pleasure. Of course, any luxury accommodations are only as good as the staff on call. Smith Fork Ranch features a cadre of young, ready and willing professionals who return each season. They are a key part of the fabric of the operation. For some in Aspen, a getaway means going to the beaches of Hawaii or Bali or Mexico. For others, a trip to Europe or India sets the standard. But for those who appreciate the grandeur of the West and want luxury experiences, look to your own backyards. The Ranch life beckons, and it’s just a short drive away. ‘MARY COIN’

NOTEWORTHY

HALFWAY THROUGH Mary Silver’s crystalline new novel, “Mary Coin,” two women’s lives converge near a frost-blighted field of peas in Depression-era California. Vera Dare, a government photographer, aims her camera at a rumpled migrant family. Her thoughts drift to her own children: two young boys sent to a boardinghouse because she cannot afford to take care of them. The woman on the other side of the lens is Mary Coin, a single mother with seven hungry children, barely scraping by as a migrant farmworker. In the photos, she cradles a sick infant and looks considerably older than her 32 years. Here, you might pause to take a long look at the book’s dust jacket and let Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother (cropped close and colorized) meld with the story. Lange documented farm laborers for the Farm Security by DANIEL A. FINAN | edited by WILL SHORTZ

thought of them as a fist held up to fate.” In contrast, the driven photographer is depicted as guilt-ridden, a woman who “felt her ambition as a disfigurement, something deeply unfeminine and not worthy of a mother.” The novel’s preoccupation with the exploitive, selective nature of photography invites an examination of its own pastiche of fact and fiction. Hardship? Dignity? Courage? “Mary Coin” is Silver’s meditation on that question.
