This year’s theme is “CommUNITY,” focusing on the decades-long tradition of the volunteer-based, locally run, free and non-commercial mountain town gathering. On the music side, the Gazebo Stage hosts the traditional drum circle and opening ceremony with Rhythms of the Heart on Friday (4 p.m.) followed by Wyoming funk band Sneaky Pete and the Secret Weapons (5 p.m.) and blues rockers Tango Alpha Foxtrot (7 p.m.). Saturday opens with Aspen Santa Fe Folklorico dancers (10 a.m.) and the locally based drummers of Zononoka (11 a.m.), followed by reggae-soul outfit Niceness (12:30 p.m.), the storytellers of PigPen Theater Company (2:30 p.m.), indie folksters Gipsy Moon (5 p.m.) and will close with 10-piece afrofunk collective Atomga (7 p.m.). Sunday will open with the Colorado Ambassadors of Gospel (11 a.m.) followed by Americana duo Pearl & Wood (12:30 p.m.), alt-rock band Bicycle Annie (2:30 p.m.), the mariachi fusion group Jarabe Mexicano (5 p.m.) who also host a free youth workshop in the Oasis on Sunday morning. THE GOETHE BICENTEN N IAL

1949 ASPEN

ON JANUARY 13, 1949, The Aspen Times revealed that plans were coming together for the Goethe Bicentennial to be held that summer in Aspen. As the paper reported, “the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos, has been engaged for the musical portion of the international Goethe Convocation to be held next summer in Aspen in commemoration of the bicentennial of the birth of the great poet-philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mitropoulos, permanent conductor of the 90-man Minneapolis Symphony since 1937, last week was also named a regular conductor and musical advisor of the New York Philharmonic Symphony for the 1949-’50 season. A native of Athens, Greece, he formerly was guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1930. He previously conducted the Paris Symphony, and performed in Great Britain, Italy and Russia. He made his American debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1936, and has conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, and Rochester, N.Y. Walter P. Paepcke, a Director of the Foundation, stated, ‘We are planning a complete program of music which Goethe inspired, plus other outstanding music of Goethe’s era- music of equal stature to the man. The concerts will include instrumentalists and vocalists, in addition to the Minneapolis Symphony.’” The photograph above shows Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting the orchestra at the 1949 Goethe Festival. The standing violinist is Nathan Milstein. This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org.

GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

THE GEAR JUNKIE: ULTRA-RUNNING RECORD SHOES LAST SUMMER, ultra-athlete Scott Jurek set a record on the Appalachian Trail, running and fast-hiking the 2,189-mile trail in 46 days. To commemorate the feat, Brooks Running pulverized some soles from shoes Jurek wore on the trail and added the recycled rubber to the tread on a special-edition line. From Georgia to Maine, the multi-week feat required 50-mile day stacked upon 50-mile day. Jurek went through a few pairs of shoes along the way, and Brooks collected the worn-out soles for something it dubs a “run-incarnation” project. It’s a bit of a stunt for sure, but I’m on board. The company’s stalwart Cascadia trail-running shoe serves as the base for the special Jurek shoe. Each set is hand-numbered, and the company made only 2,189 pairs — one for each mile Jurek ran — to be given away and sold starting later this month. In addition to the recycled rubber, the shoes have Scott Jurek and Appalachian Trail details throughout. On the side of the shoe, for example, a profile line represents the north-south route of the trail. They will be available at the end of this month, though Brooks has a teaser online now at brooksrunning.com. I got an early look at the shoe this week, running a few miles for a test. In addition to channeling some Scott Jurek out there, the Cascadia shoes gave a good ride on rough terrain. These are not ultralight shoes — my size 12.5s weigh about 14 ounces per foot. But Brooks sells the Cascadia as “SUVs for your feet.” They are supportive trail shoes with lots of cushion, a rock plate and a stick-to-anything outsole. Don’t sprint with the Cascadias on your feet. Jurek would frown anyway. These are distance kicks capable for long miles, rugged terrain, mud, rocks and anything else you’ll find out there. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

WINEINK

DRINK THE OLD STUFF FIRST THE WINES OF OUR YOUTH

DUE TO THE GREAT largess of friends and people in the wine biz, I have been afforded the opportunity to taste some wines that have a little age on them. Not ancient wines or even wines from say, before I took my first steps, but rather some wines that had their genesis in the summers of my youth in the 1970s and ‘80s. First, let me say KELLY J. that any time I HAYES can sniff, sip and contemplate a wine from a time gone by, I love to try to remember the state of my personal state at that time. For example, while once looking at the burntorange rim of a ’71 Domaine Gros, Richbourg, I recalled that I was just entering high school as the grapes in that glass were being harvested. My go-to wine at the time, if you could call it that, was Mateus Rosé, a slightly sparkling Portuguese number that I had read was popular with one Rod Stewart, who had recently released his third solo LP “Every Picture Tells a Story,” with the hit “Maggie May.” But I digress, as anyone who knows what an LP is, will surely tell you. The point is that for many of us the opportunity to taste the wines from the historic vintages of the past is one that should be savored. Old wines, like, ahem, old people, have achieved texture, character and beauty that is a result of having been afforded time to mature. Not all old wines of course. But there are special wines sourced from grapes born in vintages in which the sun and the seasons smiled softly upon them and were crafted by winemakers whose deft hands gently persuaded them to perfection. These are wines that have been nurtured

by owners who kept them in pristine condition for decades. Never too warm, nor too cold. Just right, as they awaited the moment when the twisting of the cork and the rush of air through the bottle’s neck that would announce that it was time for the wine to be drunk. My greatest “old wine” experience came from a bottle of Syrah from the Northern Rhone. Hermitage, to be precise. And it was not all that old. But the 1990 Hermitage Cuvée Cathelin, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave was one of those wines that demonstrated why having the patience to cellar and keep a wine for some time, in this case two decades, can be so rewarding. This was a wine from an outstanding vintage in a place that is as regarded as a mecca for lovers of Syrah. J.L. Chave Hermitage is a family-owned Domaine based in Mauve, France, that has been growing vines and making wines in the northern Rhône since 1481. Over those 500-plus years, the responsibility for the grapes and the fine wines that are made from them has passed from father to son, from one generation to the next. The reins, and that responsibility, are now held in the hands of a brilliant winemaker named Jean-Louis Chave, who is widely regarded as the 21st century’s master of Syrah. This wine was made by Jean-Louis’s father, Gérard, who was the 15th generation of the family to be involved in the production of wines. The Cuveé Cathelin is only made in exceptional years. I remember the nose was still fresh with floral notes, as though I were smelling a field at the base of the mountain where the fruit was grown. It was complex, structured, fruity, leathery, smoky, spicy

and rocky. There were berries, peppers, a little chocolate and a hint of vanilla. In short, all of those things that make great Syrah such a pleasure to drink. The intensity and richness were overwhelming. For over an hour I savored my glass of wine and observed subtle changes with each sip. I still have the empty bottle in my wine rack as a reminder of the experience, though the moment is etched in my memory. While I do not know the Bible well, I do know a passage or two that relate to wine. This one, Luke 5:39, kind of sums up the experience: “No man also having drunk old wine straightway desires new: for he said, the old is better.”

UNDER THE INFLUENCE J.L. CHAVE 2013 COTES DU RHONE MON COEUR So we can’t all drink a 1990 Cuvée Cathelin. But you can drink affordable Chave. For under $25 this blend of Syrah and Grenache will give you taste of the Rhône. Great for the grilling night, this young wine will pair well with both bold poultry and that flank steak.

Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS? SEAFOOD IN THE MOUNTAINS

WHEN HOTEL JEROME chef de cuisine Jason Niederkorn created a menu for the latest Somm Off wine-pairing dinner, he set his sight far past the horizon — to the Atlantic Ocean, some 2,300 miles away. Colorado steaks, chops and ruby red trout might feed hearty Aspen appetites yearround, but breezy, AMANDA sun-soaked summer RAE evenings beg for seashore foods (with rosé, margarita and mojito “patio pounders” to boot). In paying homage to New England, then, Niederkorn knew to consider its culinary claim to fame: the lobster roll. So he prepared not one but two miniature versions on housemade brioche buns: a classic cold preparation with fresh mayonnaise, celery, and a hint of Old Bay seasoning, and a threeingredient knockout made from little more than lobster meat poached in emulsified butter (beurre fondue). As expected, some visiting guests who already had devoured the first-course duo of sashimi tuna and Beau Soleil oysters expressed surprise. Plate after plate of fresh East Coast catch — in the Rocky Mountains? Yes, and it’s a novelty no longer. Considering our geography — woodsy, rugged, remote, landlocked — it’s easy to understand why certain folks might regard Aspen’s seafood abundance with suspicion. At least three local restaurants are dedicated to the art of sushi and many more feature variations on crudo and tartare. Ajax Tavern’s annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest on Labor Day calls for guests to slurp unlimited shellfish faster than Fireball at a frat party. And at the very heart of town on the Mill Street

pedestrian mall is what we might consider the Aspen Triangle, comprised of Jimmy’s Bodega, which follows the tradition of Pacifica with a signature raw bar; Maru, which replaced Takah Sushi last year; and Nantucketimport Grey Lady Aspen. “I always joke with people who are like, ‘How do you get such fresh fish in the mountains?’” says Maru co-owner and head sushi chef Taylor Hale. “It’s the same way we have lettuce in January: On a plane. It’s an industry.” The proliferation of purveyors specializing in dayboat-caught fish and the ease with which product may be shipped crosscountry overnight via FedEx squashes the argument that fresh seafood in the mountains — or anywhere inland, for that matter — should seems strange. “I’m from Nantucket and spend half the year there,” says Ian Perry, managing partner of Grey Lady, which counts a third outpost on the island of Manhattan. “Even though you can see the ocean [in Nantucket], that doesn’t mean all your fish is coming from there. Half of it is from the West Coast…shrimp is from Vietnam.” Grey Lady Aspen’s new executive chef Kyle Raymond receives 50 to 75 live Maine lobsters every other day and shipments from Northeast Seafood up to five times per week. “Our lobster roll is a whole one-and-a-quarter pound lobster on the bun,” he says. “[Lobster deviled eggs], I can’t make those quick enough. We sell at least 30 orders an evening.” Naturally, because each is topped with one-and-a-half ounces of freshly shucked lobster and a drizzle of lemon zest-infused oil with dill. Other bestsellers include Cobb salad topped with an eight-ounce lobster tail, Alaskan king crab legs, mussels, sweet Florida red snapper and a retro-fantastic,

crab-stuffed baked trolley sole with lemon butter and crushed Ritz crackers. “You can get anything, anywhere,” explains Grey Lady general manager Geoffrey Geller. “Our fish order for the next day must be in by 10 p.m. We usually get it between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., depending on traffic [from Denver]. And we use lots of things that are sustainably farmed. That’s what everybody expects.” Chefs who foster relationships with seafood dealers over the years reap untold rewards: insider info, discounted pricing. In return, when a chef moves to a new kitchen, he usually takes his “fish guy” (or gal) along for the ride. For example, Niederkorn has dealt with Brooklyn-based Pierless Fish for more than 15 years, having run restaurants in Santa Monica, Newport Beach, and Big Bear in California. Thanks to that history — and established trust — he’s able to source line-caught, dayboat-fresh seafood for the Jerome according

to a custom pricing structure. “I’m so proud of what we get as far as the quality of ingredients,” he says. “Fish that was swimming along the East Coast the day before — it is special.” At Maru, chef Hale hews traditional: He uses True World Japan primarily. Main cuts — tuna, yellowtail, salmon — arrive three days per week, to balance an everrotating array of Japanese species. “You get what you pay for — it doesn’t matter where you are,” Hale says. “(Seafood) is just as good (here) as in San Francisco, Tokyo, all places directly related to seafood industry. (True World) product is immaculate. It’s beautifully wrapped, beautifully packed with cold ice packs. They know I care, I know they care. That’s the best connection to have with a fish company.” An open mind helps, too. Every three to four weeks, Raymond receives a special delivery of spearfish-caught lionfish, an invasive species on the East Coast with no natural predators. Raymond

uses them in fish tacos or fried whole to serve alongside pickled vegetables or farro risotto. Oysters hail exclusively from the mouth of the Damariscotta River in Maine, where Native Americans deposited and cultivated wild oysters centuries ago; the brackish water lends notes of earth and seaweed mixed with medium salinity and gives the bivalves a firm, plump texture. “They’re very clean and crisp with subtle flavors you get from a freshwater oyster,” Raymond says — ideal for novices. Each week, Raymond’s purveyor sends a list of product expected — along with suggestions. When his purveyor noted that his “favorite way to eat this Colorado striped bass was sashimi,” Raymond added a raw plate to that night’s menu. “We’re not confined to East Coast style,” he says. “We can go around the world.” Education is key. When East Coast cod fell prey to overfishing, Niederkorn was able to secure Icelandic product to sub into the

Close relationships with seafood distributors, speedy international delivery and flexibility in the face of overfishing represent only part of the equation for local chefs. Once in Aspen, ingredients must be treated with care. “It’s about knowing what you’re going to use, not ordering too much and treating everything with respect,” says Maru co-owner and head sushi chef Taylor Hale. “Even the best piece of fish will turn into a piece of sh*t in 20 minutes if you let it sit out on the cutting board or wrap it in the wrong paper. The process of breaking down that fish affects every single piece that you get out of it: You can only drop a fish so many times instead of placing it down, and if you don’t slice it right the first way, it gets wasteful really quickly.” A razor-sharp knife is crucial to maintain integrity of cells and prevent mashing, which leads to mushiness. “Anytime there’s pressure that’s not slicing, it’s going to damage the membrane,” Hale says. “That’s why sometimes you see that iridescence on the outside coating—as if the knife wasn’t super sharp as they were pushing down on the filet to make oil come out prematurely. Stuff that’s delicate has soul. We treat produce the same way.”

Jerome’s bestselling fish and chips. “It’s our responsibility to know we’re buying something that is sustainable, not endangered, which is ever-changing,” says Niederkorn, who uses SeafoodWatch.org as a guide and prefers wild, line-caught fish to farm-raised, net-caught species. “Awareness is important. I’m not a huge fan of farm-raised fish, but obviously that’s very sustainable. It’s a fine line between doing the right thing by choosing sustainability and having amazing quality that isn’t farm-raised.” In the end, chefs meet the challenge of changing perceptions about seafood in Aspen by staying flexible when working with a fickle industry. “Sometimes the boat doesn’t catch a lot of one fish, so we have to juggle and see what we’re substituting,” Raymond explains. FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

ASPEN UNTUCKED

by BARBARA PLATTS

The Jazz Aspen crowd enjoys the concert at last year’s Labor Day Experience in Snowmass.

DON’T FRET, SUMMER ISN’T OVER YET FIVE EVENTS STILL TO COME BEFORE THE END OF THE SEASON

DON’T GET DISAPPOINTED about the fact that the days of summer are waning. There’s still plenty of fun to be had before the mud season takes hold. Below are five things to make sure are on your calendar, as they should not be missed.

HARVEST FESTIVAL DINNER AND DANCE

BLUEGRASS SUNDAYS

July 31 through September 4 A party with a view, Bluegrass Sundays BARBARA PLATTS bring some notable musicians to the top of Aspen Mountain to perform with a backdrop of the Elk Mountain Range. The scene always is casual and fun. You can pack a lunch or buy one at the Sundeck. This music event is ideal for people of all ages. If you’re over 21, you can indulge in a cold brew or two. Concerts start at 3 p.m. each Sunday. ANDERSON RANCH COMMUNITY PICNIC FOR ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

August 6 I can recall going to this event as far back as age 8. It was fun then, and it’s certainly a blast now. Considered the ranch’s biggest fundraiser, this event beautifully showcases all of the work done at the organization over the summer months. As many as 200 artworks,

PHOTOS BY JEREMY WALLACE

donated by artists, collectors and galleries, will be auctioned off during the event. Plus there’s music, activities for the kids and lots of good food. This year should be particularly special since the ranch is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Plus, if you buy a duck, you have a chance of winning $10,000 in cash. Who wouldn’t want that? Get out there by 11 a.m. to enjoy the festivities. Ducks get dropped at precisely 2:10 p.m.

DUCKY DERBY

September 2 to 4 Jazz Aspen Snowmass has crafted a highly impressive lineup for this year’s Labor Day Experience. From The Killers and Stevie Wonder to Thievery Corporation and Train, it would be hard to choose just one night to attend…so go for all three. This is certainly one of the most popular events of the summer and there’s a good reason for it. Enough said.

August 13 This is another event I’ve been going to since I was a wee pup, as I’m sure is the case with many others who are reading this. Although the derby is considered to be more kid-focused, it’s a good time for all ages. I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch roughly 30,000 adorable rubber ducks float down the Roaring Fork River?

JAS LABOR DAY EXPERIENCE

September 17 Yes, this still counts as summer. The first day of fall is not until September 22 so I’m allowed to include this. I’ve never been to this event before, but after going to Sustainable Settings for the first time this past week (read more about my experience in next week’s column), I would go to any event the nonprofit farm threw. The work they are doing is truly incredible and should be seen by anyone who lives or visits the area. This particular festival is considered the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year. An all day experience, it includes a speaker series, endless amounts of food grown and raised at the farm and prepared by notable Roaring Fork Valley chefs, ranch tours, hay wagon rides and lots of spirits and good company. I’ve heard from many that it is an event not to be missed and I fully intend not to this year. So there you are. Sure, July is almost over but don’t let it get you down. There’s plenty left to happen before we say goodbye to the warmer months in the Roaring Fork Valley. See you out there. Barbara Platts has all of these upcoming events on her calendar. Do you? VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | SMITH FORK RANCH

by AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

THREE REASONS TO RETREAT TO SMITH FORK RANCH THIS SUMMER AND FALL MY LOVE FOR Smith Fork Ranch in Crawford, Colorado, about two hours west of Aspen, near Paonia, is no secret. A wonderful guest ranch, great for families, it is a relaxed and reviving property with one of the best dining and wine programs in the region. If you haven’t had a chance to visit owners Marley and Linda Hodgson and their AMIEE WHITE family at Smith Fork BEAZLEY Ranch in the past, they have just announced new programs that should entice everyone to visit the ranch before it closes for the season in October.

NEW BACKCOUNTRY TOUR New this year, Smith Fork Ranch has introduced a new overnight adventure guided by Landsend Outfitters that takes guests into the heart of the Colorado wilderness. The father and son team of Tony and Darby Pendergrast know every inch of Smith Fork’s backcountry and lead guests on a two-hour ride

past hidden lakes and streams and through scenic panoramas and wildlife habitats. Pack mules and horses carry guests, food and gear to the final destination, Sink Creek, a private camp located 10,000 feet above sea level, under the towering Mount Guaro. While guests enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails around the camp fire, dinner is set up in a private, candlelit tent featuring grass-fed beef from a local cattle ranch and veggies from Smith Fork Ranch’s farmstead garden. Following dinner, guests can stargaze before retiring to their safari-style, walk-in tents featuring soft mattresses and cots. The next day they are roused in the morning by the scent of breakfast cooking on an open flame and coffee brewing, before heading back down to the Ranch.

A TWIST ON FORAGING The Ranch’s sous chef Daryl Johnson grew up in the North Fork Valley and has been foraging for mushrooms in the area for 30 years. When conditions permit,

Jul y 2 8 - Aug u st 3, 2016

he will take people out riding and searching for mushrooms and other local delicacies then return to the ranch to create a meal. The foraged ingredients are paired with produce from the ranch’s farmstead and nearby ranches. A similar experience, “Cocktail and Horseback Riding Experience,” is a scenic, early evening horseback ride to a hilltop overlooking the ranch and valley where cocktails and food is served to guests.

STANDOUT WINE PROGRAM One of the great appeals of Smith Fork Ranch is their food and wine program. The majority of produce used on the ranch comes fresh from the on-site organic garden, which produces more than 80 varieties of herbs, fruits and vegetables. Guests are encouraged to help cultivate the garden on property and help harvest fresh product for upcoming meals. In addition to produce from the ranch’s garden, the ranch maintains farm-to-table relationships with the local farming community, procuring the finest cuts of meat

and supplementary vegetables and herbs from ranches, farms and orchards in Crawford, Hotchkiss and Paonia. To complement the food, the Hodgsons have created an exemplary wine program, with a selection of more than 400 fine wines from around the world, including several varieties from the North Fork Valley’s finest wineries, the only ranch of its kind to receive this level of award. The ranch also has its own signature wine brand, created in collaboration with Alfred Eames Cellars, one the premier wine makers in the North Fork Valley. “We spend an immense amount of time sourcing our wines from winemakers who share our philosophy,” says Marley Hodgson. “We love to source from small, family wineries where passion and handcrafted come together to produce amazing results, where the small nuances created by differing terroirs, climates and specific gastronomic histories are not lost

What follows for the next few hours is a symphonic equivalent of speed-dating. As the orchestra plays Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and then Strauss’ Horn Concerto, each conductor gets exactly 15 minutes on the podium to rehearse the movement they’ll conduct later for an audience. A clock is taped to a music stand at the rear left of the orchestra, its ticking hands keeping the conductor on time. An Aspen Music Festival and School staffer seated in the gallery reminds each conductor how much time he or she has left: “Five minutes!” then “Two minutes!” then an abrupt “Thank you!” and polite applause to usher them off the stage. At that point, the teacher — usually Aspen Music Fest music director Robert Spano but on this Tuesday guest conductor Hugh Wolf — offers notes to the conductor on how they did and what they might change. It’s fast and furious, with none of the pomp and circumstance and niceties of the concert the orchestra and its conductors will give seven hours later, when the stands of the Benedict and the lawn outside are filled with the Festival faithful.

MAKING MAESTROS Founded in 2000 by then Festival music director David Zinman, the Conducting Academy is sui generis in the classical music world. What distinguishes the Aspen program from others for aspiring conductors around the world — whether at full-time conservatories or summer schools -— is that the conductors here have a full orchestra at their disposal. Those 15-minute speed dates on the day of a concert are preceded by daily sessions where each conductor can learn by doing, working with an actual orchestra of 59 talented musicians who also are transitioning into professional music careers. “They are working with the instrument they need,” says program administrator Asadour Santourian. “This is the rarity that distinguishes it from any other existing program.” The conductors in the program make it here through a rigorous audition and application process. This year, the academy received about 200 applications for its nine slots. Three additional conducting students, who last year won Aspen Music Festival and School prizes, are back for a second summer in the program. Some have compared the academy to a finishing school for conductors, taking young people who’ve been trained on the technical aspects of the art form and preparing them for a career with on-the-job training. For instance, a student may be technically well-versed but may have an emotional distance from the music. Time with an orchestra, and with an audience, can nudge them toward leading the kinds of transcendent concerts that can make a career. Viewed from outside of the industry, it seems all but impossible to break into the ranks of symphony conductors. Think about the long odds of becoming a professional musician — how many kids dream of it and how many adults live it? Then multiply those odds by 50 to 100. There might be 16 violins on

stage, but just one conductor. Maybe eight cellists. Still just one conductor. Fifty to 100 musicians in an orchestra, but just one maestro holding a baton on the podium in front of them. Aiming to be a conductor, it would seem, is the equivalent of a young athlete not just wanting to play in the NFL, but to be a head coach. And yet, since the Aspen Conducting Academy was founded in 2000, every one of the young men and women who’ve gone through the program has landed in the professional ranks of conductors, music directors and guest conductors. “It’s a staggering fact,” says Music Festival president and CEO Alan Fletcher. “Every student — every one — is employed as a conductor. It’s 100 percent.” Fletcher and Santourian credit that success rate to the close mentorship that Spano and others offer conducting students and the extensive time they spend in front of the orchestra here. Members of the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra are all on full fellowships and — like the conductors — are usually transitioning between their education and full-time music careers. The orchestra gives these fellowship players, like the conductors, experience with the standard symphonic repertoire. Over the course of a summer, they play eight programs of the classics for their rotating conductors. “These are students who are about to take major orchestra auditions,” says Fletcher. “And they are playing all the Brahms and Tchaikovsky and Beethoven symphonies that, when they go to these auditions, they’re going to have to play excerpts from.” All the back-and-forth during rehearsals between conducting students and teachers also gives the orchestra members a rare and useful glimpse into what a conductor is thinking. “It’s like the curtain is drawn back,” says Fletcher. “Robert Spano or Leonard Slatkin, or whoever our guest teachers are, are saying, ‘Here is how you cue the oboe in this particular piece’ or ‘Here is a trick in Beethoven 7 that conductors use.’ But the musicians would never know that stuff.”

CONDUCTORS RISING... All of the 120 graduates of the Aspen Conducting Academy since 2000 are working conductors today. These are a few of them: - MEI-ANN CHEN: music director, Chicago Sinfonietta - ARAM DEMIRJIAN: music director, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra - JAMES GAFFIGAN: music director, Lucern Symphony Orchestra (Switzerland) - CHRISTIAN MACELARU: conductor in residence, Philadelphia Orchestra - TOMÁŠ NETOPIL: music director, Czech National Theatre (Prague)

The same might be said for the public. Conducting Academy rehearsals in the tent and on the Music School campus in Edlis Neeson Hall are open to the public and free. Neeson Hall, which opened last year, was designed with a small gallery, specifically to allow visitors. Sitting in on the rehearsals offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes looks at how concerts — and conductors — are made. “I go to them all the time,” says Fletcher, “because I think it’s interesting to see how conductors talk to each other and to the orchestra.” (The free Tuesday afternoon Conducting Academy concerts also are an ideal venue for those who may be new to, or skeptical of, classical music to get a bite-sized taste of an orchestral performance. Because the concerts stop and start after each movement, it’s not uncommon — nor frowned upon — for audience members or families with young children to come and go after a movement or two.)

AFTER ASPEN So, what makes a young person want to be a maestro? And what does life look like for a young conductor leaving Aspen? Consider George Jackson. The 29-year-old was in the 2014 Conducting Academy class, returned last summer as a prize-winner, then won the Aspen Conducting Prize, which brought him back for this summer in a professional role as the festival’s assistant conductor. Jackson came to classical music relatively late. As a teenager in England, Jackson played guitar and drums in garage bands. A student at an all-boys school, at 16, he joined a local youth orchestra as a way to meet girls, after a classmate told him of the favorable girl-to-boy ratio in its ranks. (He indeed became the only male violin player in the orchestra.) Though he joined for social reasons, the program’s conductor sparked something life-changing in Jackson. He recalls a breakthrough during rehearsals of Berlioz’ “Symphonie fantastique,” in which his conductor told the dramatic story behind the Romantic epic. “The conductor explained what all of this really meant,” Jackson recalls. “And what I thought of as kind of boring orchestral music actually had these rich stories behind them.” He went on to study music theory and composition at Trinity College in Dublin and fell into conducting friends and classmates, simply, he says, because there weren’t conductors around to lead performances of student work. Those experiences drew him away from his interest in composing and toward conducting. “I was developing more of an opinion of how I wanted music to go, versus wanting to create it from nothing,” he says. Along with his work in Aspen, Jackson has earned a name for himself conducting orchestras and operas in Europe, including stepping in as an 11thTOP: Conducting instructor Hugh Wolf observes students while practicing at the Benedict Music Tent. hour replacement to conduct the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2013 during a high-profile premiere and founding an opera company in 2010 at age 22. Jackson has become a familiar face in Aspen this summer. He conducted during the Take a Stand concert in June, at the Aspen Music Festival convocation that began the season, at regular education concerts for young audiences and at the ribbon-cutting for the new Music School campus, along with assisting Spano and visiting conductors. On a recent morning on the patio at Victoria’s Espresso, the charismatic young conductor greeted a constant string of passers-by and music students who recognized him as they walked down Durant Avenue. Jackson talks about his vocation as not only a creative expression — of making his mark on a piece of music — but also as a community service, in which he literally conducts energy between an orchestra and an audience. “The idea that someone doesn’t know Prokofiev or doesn’t know Beethoven’s Second Symphony, I feel it’s my job to assure that they’ve heard it before dismissing it,” he explains. He characterizes his time in the Conducing Academy as the equivalent of getting an MBA in the business world, “a medium point between being a student and getting experience as a young professional. It’s more about doing than learning.” Like his classmates, Jackson arrived in Aspen knowing how to study a score and lead an orchestra through a piece of music. What he developed here under Spano’s thoughtful tutelage, he says, was how to transcend the basics and how to say something new with an old piece of music — and how to harness the charged atmosphere of an orchestra on concert night. “They’re like antennae,” he said of orchestra musicians during a performance. “They’re really receptive. The level of communication is so much

higher than in rehearsal. It’s almost telepathic. You can think something and communicate it in a way that doesn’t happen in rehearsal. When people are really concentrated, you get these great effects.” For his main conducting assignment of the summer, a July 27 concert with the Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra at the Benedict Music Tent that included Edward Elgar’s “Enigma,” Jackson dug deep in researching his interpretation, thinking about what the composition’s variations say about humanity and friendship. “I suggested it because I think it’s one of the pieces with which I can actually say something, not only to an orchestra but to a community,” Jackson explains. After this summer in Aspen, Jackson has a busy, globe-trotting run ahead of him as he shapes

his early conducting career: he’ll conduct the opera “Billy Budd” in the U.K. in November, the Haydn Orchestra di Bolzano e Trento on a tour of northern Italy in December, head home to London for “The Nutcracker” in January and then to Romania for a concert with the Craiova State Philharmonic Orchestra in February. It’ll be an itinerant life for Jackson until he can find a musical home, like the one he made in Aspen over the past three summers. “As much as I want to be traveling around the world conducting, I do want to be in one place and have a normal life, to be with an orchestra and be part of a community,” Jackson says. “That’s why Aspen is so great. I feel that here.” atravers@aspentimes.com

The SOCIAL SIDE of TOWN

MAKING MORE ‘ROOM TO READ’

MAY SELBY

THE ASPEN CHAPTER of Room to Read gathered for a reception July 20, welcoming the organization’s founder and co-chairman of the board to town. Ernie and Lacy Fyrwald generously opened their home for the occasion, serving sensational appetizers and light bites from Chef Marco Porceddu. Room to Read was founded in Nepal in 2000, where Wood and his initial network of supporters began taking donated books to rural communities. Today, it is a global organization dedicated to promoting and enabling education through programs focused on literacy and gender equality in education. They accomplish this through

John Wood with Susan Lodge, who lauched Room to Read’s Aspen chapter in 2009, and her husband, Fred Lodge.

Jim Swiggett, Helen Obermeyer and Carol Swiggett.

establishing school libraries, building schools, publishing local-language children’s books, training teachers on literacy education and supporting girls to complete secondary school with the life skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond. Room to Read is currently in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia. Room to Read has received 10 fourstar ratings from Charity Navigator since 2007, a recognition fewer than 1 percent of charities can claim. The Aspen chapter was established in 2009 and continues to grow with

its support team and fundraising accomplishments. Wood shared remarkable updates on Room to Read’s success at the reception, noting more than 10.7 million children have benefited from it since 2000; by 2020 they aim to reach 15 million children through their programs. Their Girls’ Education Program also grew from 31,733 participants in 2014 to 38,750 participants in 2015 and will reach 50,000 by the end of 2017. Learn more about the important work from Room to Read and how to get involved via www.roomtoread.org or the Aspen chapter’s page, www.roomtoread. org/aspenvalley.

BOOK REVIEW

‘YOU WILL KNOW ME’ OBSESSION CAN GROW from the simplest of desires — to be good at something. That can easily morph into the need to be the best, the requirement to always be a winner, even if the sacrifices don’t balance out. This sharply plotted novel eschews overt violence, yet a sense of danger and menace flows throughout the story. Katie and Eric Knox got their daughter, Devon, into gymnastics when she was 3 years old, following a horrific accident in which two of her toes were sheared off by a lawn mower. The sport, they were told, would “help

with balance.” Devon quickly moves up the ranks, fearless on the vault table and now, at 15, possibly on track for the Olympics. The training is grueling, practically around the clock, at the BelStars Gym with coach Teddy Belfour. For the Knoxes and other families, “gymnastics became the center, the mighty spine of everything.” Other parents are happy that Devon’s talents raise the gym’s reputation with reflected glory heaped on all the kids who attend. These same parents also resent Devon’s star status because their own children pale next to her. The hit-and-run death of Ryan Beck, a young man dating the coach’s niece, threatens the insular world of the gym as jealousies and secrets emerge. The Knoxes’ determination to shield Devon has far-reaching ramifications. Abbott illustrates the sacrifices that

are often made to achieve a dream. The Knoxes are burdened by credit card debt and two mortgage payments, and their old cars constantly need repair. With the attention on Devon, their studious son Drew is often neglected, his fourth-grade science projects forgotten in the wake of his sister’s gymnastic meets. The unsteady world of gymnastics could easily be seen as a metaphor for the shenanigans of Wall Street, politics and power seekers — a setting rife for a dangerous situation that may erupt at any time. Abbott expertly illustrates how a fragile foundation crumbles in “You Will Know Me.”
