I’VE NEVER BEEN a “medical tourist” — one who travels to another country for cheaper medical care than can be had here — but recently I had occasion to think a lot about the phenomenon. In July, I found myself prey to a medical malady that afflicts men far more than women, but typically is enjoyed at a much earlier age than my 61 years of life on the planet. OK, OK, I had kidney stones, and a resultant near-septic infection that could easily have been the end of me. And the “discomfort” — which is a doctor’s way of saying “extreme pain” — that I felt was of such intensity that, for a time, I might have welcomed a quiet talk with St. Peter at his Pearly Gates. But, paraphrasing an old Bob Dylan line, “Such was not my fate.” Instead, I spent a couple of days at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, being pumped full of a sufficient regime of pain medication that while I still was aware of the pain, I really didn’t mind it at all. I also got a radically large dose of antibiotics, which sent my entire body into shut-down mode and helped make the week following my discharge from VVH a living hell. But, hey, I lived, I walked, and after a while my bodily functions began to return to some semblance of normalcy. And that’s about when I got the first bill. Not that they sent it to me. Nothing like that. After I’d been out of the hospital for a few days, I went back and asked for copies of the whole bill. At first I was told the bills would not be ready for a couple of weeks, and that I would receive a notice showing how much I owed once my insurance company decided how much it should cover. No, I explained, that wasn’t what I was after. I wanted to see the entire bill, all the charges from my first admission to the ER to my release, and I wanted to see them now, regardless of the insurance company’s role. Well, the harried accounting employee told me, the only bill they had ready was for the “surgery” portion of my care, meaning the

charge for general anesthetic and the implantation of a stent in my plumbing. OK, give me that, I said, and I was presented with a bill for more than $20,000 — for what the doctor had assured me was no more than a half-hour on the table in the OR. What can I expect from the rest of the bill? Hence, the thoughts about medical tourism. A good friend of mine was such a traveler not too long ago, and for the same ailment as mine. Unemployed and thus without health insurance, my buddy was told, at the same hospital I was in, that the entire cost for treatment would be in the $50,000-$60,000 range. Once the shock wore off, he arranged to travel to China, taking with him a lady who offered to be translator and guide for the duration. The entire bill, including travel, lodging and incidentals for them both, came to about $7,000. My friend was ecstatic over the treatment and the bill, and I was flummoxed. I never did learn how his traveling companion liked the trip. His tale was a revelation. Had I not been in such pain and unable to make cogent decisions at the hospital, and if I had no medical insurance, I might have considered going for a similar deal. Instead, I await the arrival of the rest of my bill with a mixture of eagerness and dread. We’ve all heard the horror stories of entire families being financially wrecked by a single, critical encounter with the U.S. health care system. And we all know someone, or more than one, who has been unceremoniously dumped into the “unemployed” lists by our ongoing financial crisis, and thus has no health insurance. Luckily for me, I’m not in either position, at least not that I know of. Yet. But I’m soon to see for myself what comes from a medical problem that did not used to be considered something that could cause personal bankruptcy. Once I know more, you will, too.

DANCE A BIG SUMMER SEASON for the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet continues with a pair of enticing events this week at the Aspen District Theatre. On Friday, Aug. 9, the local organization presents the 16-member New York troupe Paul Taylor Dance Company for a soldout performance. The 80-something Taylor is the last remaining master of early modern dance, with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham deceased, and the future of his company is unclear. Jean-Philippe Malaty, executive director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, says the program is quintessential Taylor. The following afternoon, a new exchange program culminates when the kids from the African-oriented, Harlem-based ensemble Batato Yetu collaborate with Folklórico, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s troupe of local Latino children.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company performs on Friday, Aug. 9 at the Aspen District Theatre.

Rapper Chali 2Na performs Wednesday, Aug. 14 at Belly Up.

POPULAR MUSIC CHARLES STEWART, the rapper who performs under the name Chali 2Na, began his music career as part of a seven-man group, the Unity Committee, which performed regularly at a Los Angeles spot known as the Good Life Café. Can you get any more anti-gangsta than that? Chali, the gentle giant of rap, has carried on in that vein of alternative hip-hop. He has been a founding member of the artistic-minded Jurassic 5, and of the feel-good funk band Ozomatli, and has collaborated with highminded rappers including Talib Kwali and Mos Def, plus members of the Marley family. His latest project, which features soft r&b-inflected sounds, is appropriately titled “Against the Current.” But as he proved at a gig last summer on Snowmass’ Fanny Hill, Chali can still be a provocative, hard-hitting performer. He brings his booming baritone, and his group, the House of Vibe, to a show at Belly Up on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Frequent stops for water extended the ride on a steam train — traveling from Aspen to Leadville took four hours; Aspen to Denver took 12 hours.

ASPEN’S IRON HORSE a clanging, banging, iron horse can still be heard today in Silverton or Georgetown, where steam engines tug cars up twisting tracks. The sound of the engines as they build a head of steam raises hesitant smiles on waiting passengers as they anticipate a topsy–turvy ride. IMAGINE A 19th-century journey on the grandest of mountain railroads, the Colorado Midland. James Hagerman and Orlando Metcalf had visited Colorado Springs for health reasons and, while rehabilitating, invested in local mines. In Aspen’s early days they joined another mine investor, Jerome Wheeler, and other far-sighted entrepreneurs to conceive a Midland railroad that would start in Colorado Springs and serve central Colorado. The financially auspicious 1884 plan was to haul coking coal to Leadville’s smelters, to transport Colorado ore to Leadville for smelting, and to tap the new Aspen mining district. There was a competitor — the narrow gauge Denver and Rio Grande (D&RG) — but the Midland would be built with standard gauge track. Up to that time, only narrow gauge lines had penetrated the Rockies, yet standard gauge could haul more freight for less money.

The Midland required huge upfront capital outlays for the massive construction project. Topping the Rockies required ingenious engineering, numerous tunnels and miles of trestles like the two closest

Midland, which quickly assumed the lion’s share of the business. The crowning glory of the Midland line, one of the greatest feats of American railroad engineering, was the grade over the Continental Divide

THE CROWNING GLORY OF THE MIDLAND LINE, ONE OF THE GREATEST FEATS OF AMERICAN RAILROAD ENGINEERING, WAS THE GRADE OVER THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE THROUGH THE HAGERMAN TUNNEL: 2,000 FEET BORED THROUGH THE ROCKIES AT 11,500 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL. to Aspen: Maroon trestle, the longest at 600 feet, spanned 110 feet above Maroon Creek, plus a 478-foot span above Castle Creek. The trestles were the last projects to be completed before the Midland reached Aspen, losing a close race with the D&RG to be first to ship Aspen ore. Despite their early advantage, D&RG’s rates could not compete with those of the

through the Hagerman Tunnel: 2,000 feet bored through the Rockies at 11,500 feet above sea level. The tunnel provided a shortcut to Aspen, and an additional advantage over the D&RG. The 2,000-foot length itself afforded little challenge for miners who had excavated much longer passageways, but this tunnel, 16 feet high and 18 feet wide, took a year to complete.

The Midland produced profit almost from the start, reaching Leadville in 1887 and tapping the Aspen market in 1888. Confident of future profitability, Midland investors decided in 1890 to bore the BuskIvanhoe, a new tunnel at a lower elevation than the Hagerman, to avoid deep snow and steep grades. Almost three miles long, the tunnel indeed allowed the Midland to carry heavier loads and to speed its journey, undercutting seven of the steepest miles, but air circulation was so poor that pockets of smoke hung in the tunnel causing passengers discomfort. The new tunnel took three years to construct and the Midland borrowed heavily to finance the $18,643,000 (in today’s dollars) expense. Unfortunately, it did not begin service until the Panic of 1893, initiating a string of financial crises in the company that persisted for 15 years. My mother’s early childhood memory of the Midland and its sad closing after 31 years of operation was imbued with personal crisis: the Midland’s demise occurred during the 1918 flu epidemic, which took the life of her father. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn@ comcast.net.

ON AUG. 12, 1918 the Aspen Democrat-Times described the collapse of a mine tunnel at the site of what is now Glory Hole Park. “Cave in at the A.-J.,” declared the headline. “Stopes on the third level of the mine collapse, breaking the surface and leaving a hole 100 by 200 feet in diameter. Hundreds of people witness the spectacle. Sections of the Colorado Midland Railroad tracks and two freight cars fall into the yawning chasm. ... Then things began to happen. The surrounding surface began to drop into the hole and another pole supporting the electric wires disappeared, and the flume carrying the heavy flow of water from the Durant tunnel also went down. The cave-in was slow but steady and in a very short time two lines of railroad track went down with two freight cars, one loaded with ore.” Today, the pond at the park is all that remains of the hole.

THE LITTLE NELL’S NEW WINE GUY CURATOR AT THE LOUVRE. Conductor at Carnegie Hall. Center fielder for…you get the idea. Certain jobs are world class. Wine director of The Little Nell hotel in Aspen is one of those positions. And this month that charge was awarded to 28-year-old Carlton McCoy. McCoy, who earlier this year passed his exam to become one of 134 members of the Court of Master Sommeliers, joins an illustrious group of former wine directors at the storied property including Jonathan KELLY J. HAYES Pullis, Richard Betts and Bobby Stuckey, all of whom are also Master Sommeliers. If you have had a bottle of wine at Element 47 in the last couple of years you likely know, and remember, McCoy. He is young, engaging, knowledgeable, loquacious and bald. His modus operandi is to humbly approach the table, make a connection by asking a few questions about the diners wine likes or dislikes, and then bond, forming a relationship. He can’t help it. He is, as they say, a people person. While most guests only see the wine guy working the floor, that is just the tip of the iceberg for a wine director of a major program. Start with the cellar. More than 20,000 bottles reside in Element 47’s wine cellar and each is as important as the next one. Not having a bottle that is on the list is a significant faux pas, so it is vital to be sure the list and cellar are in sync. That means keeping a finger on the pulse of the wine world. A storm in Burgundy like the one that hit a couple of weeks back, decimating the vineyards, will have a marked effect on the prices of other vintages. A director must be savvy enough and have relationships with key suppliers to respond quickly to market vagaries. Then there are the banquets and weddings. At the Nell that means working sometimes a year or more in advance with a wedding party to make sure that high-dollar, highprofile weddings have the wine and Champagne that they want/require for their special occasions.

Carlton McCoy — as a youngster (left) and after passing his Master Sommelier’s exam (top, opposite page) — now oversees the world-class wine program at Element 47 and The Little Nell.

A wine director also must be a mentor and leader to the staff at the restaurant. At Element 47, everyone, waiters included, must have at least some wine knowledge. What is on the list, how to pour and what glassware is appropriate for which wines all are critical to the overall guest experience. McCoy is sensitive not just to the day-to-to details, but also to ensuring that his staff has the opportunity to learn about wine from the ground up. To that end he is endeavoring to bring two members of his staff with him this year to work the fall harvest at Cristom Vineyards in Oregon. Though still young, McCoy knows full well the value of mentorship. Raised in one of the roughest parts of Washington, D.C., he grew up in a church and was raised by his

grandmother, Rose Bess, who was well known throughout the community as the pastor of the Independent Church of God. Under her tutelage, McCoy began cooking when he was still a pre-teen, for the catering company run by the church While still in high school, he entered a competition held by the New York City-based CCAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Programs), which was offering a scholarship to the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in Hyde Park, N.Y. McCoy won the competition and left the urban streets of Washington to get a degree in hospitality management on the bucolic campus of the CIA. Mentors along the way included Ian Barthley, who took McCoy under his wing and taught him the basics of French cooking while he was still in high school. Chefs like Tom Colicchio, Marcus Samuelsson, Thomas Keller and Eric Ziebold all employed him at one time or another. Andrew Myers, the sommelier at Washington’s CityZen, began his wine adventure by giving him “the five books on wine” that he needed to read before Myers would begin tasting with him. Then

there was Sabato Sagaria, who offered McCoy a job at The Little Nell and brought him to Aspen. Lastly, McCoy credits Jay Fletcher. As one of the most significant Master Sommeliers and one of the world’s great palates, Fletcher had heard that McCoy was interested in becoming a Master. So he made the call and invited McCoy to taste with him. After the first tasting he told McCoy that if he worked, applied himself and was dedicated, he had the right stuff to pass the exam. McCoy passed two of three elements (Tasting and Theory) that are required to become a Master Sommelier last summer. Then, in May, he passed the final phase, Service, on his home turf at The Little Nell. He became just the second African-American and the third youngest individual to pass the exam. It takes a village, it would seem, to make a Master. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soonto-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and a black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

TOO MANY CHEFS IN THE KITCHEN? NO SUCH THING, SAYS CHEFS CLUB NEW COMMANDER DIDIER ELENA

THE EXECUTIVE CHEF at a world-class resort shares his kitchen, his staff, and nearly half of his menu with four culinary celebrities stirring up kudos at their own restaurants across the country. One has to wonder: What’s the punch line? “After being 25 years with Alain Ducasse, I think I can handle anything,” quips Didier Elena, French-born ringleader of Chefs Club AMANDA by Food & Wine at the RAE St. Regis Aspen Resort. “I crossed the world with him, opening restaurants in Tokyo, New York and France. But here I’m trying to absorb different cultures, different visions, and mix those into one experience.” All four of the Food & Wine Best New Chefs selected for the restaurant’s sophomore year agree: the March appointment of Elena, whose dedication to a 3-Star Michelin heavyweight has shaped an attitude humble and tolerant, made their decision to come aboard a piece of cake. For days leading up to the Aspen Food & Wine Classic kickoff in June, the concept kitchen’s grand master coaxed confidence from the chefs, who must surrender their beloved recipes to an unfamiliar crew before returning to their respective homes. “It was a little scary,” admits Jason Franey, executive chef of Canlis in Seattle. “Chefs are protective of their food — it’s very personal. But a chef you can trust, who understands where you’re coming from, like Didier, makes it easier.” Jonathan Sawyer, chef-owner of the Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland and one of the Chefs Club chosen few in 2012, worked alongside Elena this spring and praises his approach. “He’s not changing peoples dishes,” Sawyer says. “He understands that Aspen’s menu makeup should have this much fish, this much pomp

and circumstance. Chefs drop their dishes in each category, then he goes over top to make sure [the menu] is rounded out.” Good news for diners seeking the flavors of Europe, America and Southeast Asia in one cohesive meal:

“It’s like putting the Best New Chefs on stage,” Didier explains, adding that it’s “a great opportunity for them to show customers what they’re doing in their own restaurants.” Another enchantment, especially for locals looking for more affordable

Chefs Club executive chef Didier Elena, far right, oversees the concept kitchen’s staff — and visiting chefs — at the St. Regis Aspen Resort. “It’s like putting (Food & Wine magazine’s) Best New Chefs on stage,” he sayys.

Chefs Club recently inaugurated a Best New Chefs prix-fixe tasting menu. Elena’s contribution is notably absent, but he’s there behind the scenes, orchestrating the four dishes as their auteurs intended: cured scallops and trout roe by Viet Pham of Forage in Salt Lake City; garlicky ricotta-stuffed pasta by Missy Robbins of New York City; slowcooked chicken breast with sweet corn, shiitake, and tomato confit by Franey; and kaffir lime custard by Bryant Ng of The Spice Table in Los Angeles. As with à la carte items, the prix-fixe menu will change seasonally. At $65, it’s a steal.

luxury, launches this Friday: a bar menu, featuring “dishes that I like when I go to the bar,” Elena says. Think French classics such as beef tartare ($14) and chilled pea soup ($7), and American favorites including house-made pretzels ($5) and Dungeness crab cakes ($11). A few dishes hail from the Best New Chefs: Ng’s spicy beef ribs with pineapple-anchovy sauce ($15) and Robbins’ grilled Colorado lamb chop with Calabrian chili vinaigrette ($17). All the better to pair with new bar manager Anthony Bohlinger’s fresh list of specialty cocktails. Franey, Ng, Pham and Robbins will

return to Aspen throughout the year to host cooking classes and special events — and to see how Didier is nurturing their inspiration. “When you go [to another restaurant], you’re only getting one point of view, one signature,” Elena says. “It’s the dream of every chef to know Chinese, Italian, French food, but life is too short to learn everything.” Perhaps. But at Chefs Club you can savor it all at once. Amanda Rae is currently navigating the food desert of Sturgis, South Dakota. Send tips: amandaraewashere@gmail.com

SMALL BITES FROM STAR CHEFS ON EXECUTIVE CHEF DIDIER ELENA: “He’s much more laid back than I anticipated. He’s not just walking around, barking orders, he’s teaching. I don’t know many chefs who could say, ‘I’m not going to cook mostly my own food, I’m going to represent all of these other people.’ It’s a tough thing to do.” — Missy Robbins, New York City

ON ALWAYS LEARNING: “In French cuisine, you don’t fry anything. The dream is to make the greatest tempura. Bryant Ng came with cauliflower tempura — which is only flour, water and eggs — and it is amazing. His recipe is a revelation.” — Didier Elena, Chefs Club executive chef

ON EGO IN THE KITCHEN: “Ego doesn’t taste very good, no matter how perfectly executed. I share all my recipes and it makes me happy when I see similar dishes. It means we’re getting closer to people understanding Singaporean or Vietnamese food the way we are beginning to understand Chinese regional cuisine, Japanese, Korean, even Thai food. We’re still years away, but at least the dialogue is beginning.” — Byrant Ng, The Spice Table, Los Angeles

ON THE HARDEST PART OF COLLABORATING WITH CHEFS CLUB: “You’re not there all the time to look at [your dishes]. Chefs are control freaks. It’s hard to let your babies go.” — Jason Franey, Canlis, Seattle

ON THE BEST PART: “As a chef, I’m always interested in collaboration. Learning from Jason Franey, and having him ask me questions: that’s the kind of environment we like to cultivate.” — Viet Pham, Forage, Salt Lake City The scene at Chefs Club, where dishes like slow-cooked chicken breast with sweet corn, shiitake, and tomato confit by Jason Franey (middle) and cured scallops and trout roe by Viet Pham, make the menu extraordinary.

SOME SUMMER EVENTS LEFT TO DO

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, with singer Alex Ebert, plays in September at the Jazz Aspen Labor Day Festival.

for those many of you feeling that summer is slipping away and it’s time to hit the panic button because you haven’t (take your pick here of as many as you want) seen a concert at the Music Tent, completed an ultra-marathon, dined on oysters and Champagne on the Ajax Tavern patio, run into Dwight Howard, brought a picnic to the Thursday night concert on Fanny Hill, or driven past the Roundabout, here’s a message: Chill. THE FACT IS, summer is only halfway over. (In fact, as of publication date, we’re two days beyond the midpoint, so panic if you must.) There are 11 days left in the

Aspen Music Festival season; 10 for Theatre Aspen. There are two shows left on Fanny Hill (but hustle — one of them is Thursday, Aug. 8). The biggest weekend of the summer,

Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Labor Day Festival, is weeks away. The trails should be good for a couple of months, those al fresco dining spots aren’t closing anytime soon, Belly Up’s schedule is packed, and downvalley is open year-round these days (or so I’ve been told). But, so you don’t find yourself flipping the calendar to September and wondering how exactly you frittered away the summer without hiking Cathedral Lake, seeing “Les Misérables,” catching a show in the JAS Café series in the Little Nell, etc., I’ve worked up a punch list of late-summer activities still to be caught. Get moving.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT FILM: WARNING — Aspen is about to lose a major portion of its cinema offerings, as the Wheeler Opera House shuts down for the fall, and the Wheeler Film Series disappears. In addition, this summer has been remarkably bleak for serious fans of serious movies, who instead have been offered a steady diet of horror, comic book heroes and shoot-‘em-ups and blow-‘em-ups. So mark this down carefully: Aug. 22-25. That’s when the Wheeler’s MountainSummit fills its screen with smart, moving documentaries, and it looks like the program might just be strong enough to get the doc-aholics through what are going to be some dark months ahead. Among the highlights: “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer,” about the group of Russian artists/activists jailed for a performance in a Moscow church; “Life According to Sam,” about an teenage boy facing extraordinary circumstances with extraordinary grace; “High and Hallowed,” about the first American ascent of Everest, in 1963; and a special event with filmmaker Tom Shadyac, with a screening of a surprise film. POPULAR MUSIC: Once in a while, Aspen seems to miss out on a music act that seems likely to fit in well here. The rootsy Australian group the John Butler Trio emerged more than a decade ago, and despite being continuously active, have never played here. The streak ends in a big way, with a two-night stand, Aug. 1516, at Belly Up. Or extend the stretch of Australian roots-rock to a threeday weekend, with Xavier Rudd’s show on Aug. 17. DINING: A year ago, Michael Gurtman, an Aspenite with no restaurant experience, decided to get into the local dining business. His place opened a few months later than planned, in a spot with a recent history of high turn-over. And he gave it a name that was likely to turn away a decent percentage of diet-conscious eaters: the Meatball Shack. The Shack is not only still standing, but it is among the best recent additions to Aspen’s restaurant options. Not surprisingly, the balls — veal, chicken, spicy pork — are delicious. What is surprising is that even non-meateaters find a place called the Meatball Shack welcoming, with a quinoa bowl, watermelon and burrata salad, and Brussels sprouts, all delicious. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Twenty years ago, Harris Hall opened, with fans hailing it as the Carnegie Hall of the

22

Christo, pictured at the Arkansas River, site of the proposed “Over the River” environmental art project, will speak at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center on Aug. 23.

Rockies — and neighborhood critics grumbling that the Aspen Music Festival had promised it would be used only as a rehearsal hall. The controversy faded away years ago and it seems unlikely there will be anything but a celebration when the 20th anniversary of Harris Hall is observed, Aug. 11, with a fantastically eclectic program (Vivaldi, Bach, Osvaldo Golijov, Philip Glass) and performers including violinist Robert McDuffie and guitarist Sharon Isbin.

DANCE: The best — or at least the

most emotional — is yet to come for the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet company this season. The company, which had a hit with its early-summer program, returns to the Aspen District Theatre Aug. 24 with a whole different program. The focus, though will be less on the pieces and more on Katie Dehler, whose long tenure as a highly respected member of the troupe comes to a close. The evening comprises three works — Jorma Elo’s “Over Glow,” Nicolo Fonte’s “Where We Left Off ” and Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Last” — that put Dehler in the spotlight.

TV: Despite the necessity to go out and do things, there is time for staying put on the couch. “Breaking Bad,” the standard-setting drama series about meth, Albuquerque and family, comes to a close with the final eight episodes. The stretch run begins Sunday, Aug. 11, and continues for seven more Sunday evenings. Count on the big showdown between Walt and Hank.

Aug u st 8 - 14, 2013

VISUAL ART: A late addition to

the Anderson Ranch Arts Center calendar is a significant one. Christo, the 78-year-old who makes environmental installations in public places, is set to speak on Aug. 23. Bound to dominate the conversation is the current project “Over the River,” which would drape fabric panels over the Arkansas River near Salida, on the other side of Independence Pass.

FESTIVAL: Jazz Aspen opened its season big, with a June Festival that featured the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Jackson Browne and the duo of Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite. For the Labor Day Festival (Aug. 30-Sept. 1, Snowmass Town Park), the series takes a big stylistic turn, toward pop and country; headliners include Keith Urban, Jason Mraz and Journey. Possibly the not-to-miss act: the hippie folk-rock of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. WRITTEN WORD: Avid readers should get to know the work of Adam Haslett, who will be in residence in September with the Aspen Writers’ Foundation. The 42-year-old has just two books, and both are worthwhile. His 2002 short story collection, “You Are Not a Stranger Here” was a finalist for the National Book Award, and his 2010 novel “Union Atlantic” was translated into 12 languages. THEATER: Charlie Brown strikes out (of course) at the end of the

musical “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” but it’s been a home-run season for Theatre Aspen. Most entertaining has been the one-man comedy “Fully Committed,” which, despite its wild pace and virtuoso performance by Matt Bailey, is also a portrait of the modern workplace that should ring true to anyone with a job.

RECORDING: Summer’s got weeks to go; Jerry Days — the days between the anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s birthday (Aug. 1) and his death (Aug. 9) — are just about to end. One way to celebrate is with “May 1977,” a lavish new package of five complete shows from that magnificent month in Grateful Dead history. Fourteen CDs from a one-week period might seem a lot, but many of the songs were still in the gestation period, and took on a different feel from night to night. And the 5/17 show, from the University of Alabama, is spectacular, topped by monumental versions of “Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodleoo” and “Good Lovin.’” On the other hand, this set probably doesn’t represent the best of that month; many Deadheads will argue that 5/8, from Cornell University, which is not included here, was as good as it ever got. And possibly the bigger news is that 8/27/72 from Veneta, Ore., another contender for greatest show ever played, is being released, on CD and as a DVD film, under the title “Sunshine Daydream.” Release date is mid-September.

Charlie Paterson outside his East Hopkins Avenue cabin in 1950.

THE PATERSON PAPERS: ‘ESCAPE HOME’ A TRUE FAMILY MEMOIR by STEWART OKSENHORN

Charlie Paterson describes himself as a reticent man. “Not to my family, but to the exterior world,” Paterson said on a recent afternoon in the house he designed in the 1970s on an unusually secluded street a few blocks from the base of Aspen Mountain. “It’s hard for me to express myself on feelings and the deeper stuff. When I’ve gone to meetings, I never tended to expound on things. I formed my opinions and kept them to myself.”

P H OTO C O U RT E S Y O F C H A R L I E A N D C A R R I E PAT E R S O N

THE SOURCE OF PATERSON’S reserve isn’t a shortage of thoughts, stories or things to say, but the very opposite. He has lived on three continents, experienced privilege and deprivation, studied architecture with Frank Lloyd Wright, fled from the Nazis, and was separated from his parents at a young age. He came to Aspen in 1949, in time to participate in the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation — as an usher and stagehand — and stands as one of the last remaining Aspenites to have witnessed the birth of modern Aspen. Here, his life has encompassed the widest range of activities: He has been a ski bum and ski instructor, an architectural designer and a lodge owner, a board member for various organizations, including the Aspen Music Festival and School for 40 years. Perhaps of greatest significance, he has been a family man — not only raising two daughters with Fonda, his wife of 44 years, but also reuniting his family and his family history after both were nearly decimated by two World Wars centered in Europe. It has all overwhelmed him some.

A S P E N T I M E S . C O M / W E E K LY

“There was so much to the story — too much to tell,” Paterson said about his quiet nature. “It was better not to say anything than to start in on it.” In 2005, Paterson sold his Boomerang Lodge, in Aspen’s Shadow Mountain neighborhood, retired, and found himself with time to start in on that history. And he was right; there was much to be told. “Escape Home,” the memoir he wrote with his daughter Carrie, runs more than 500 pages, and represents a spilling out of the sorts of things — a family tree, photos dating back a century, stories of heartache and adventure, recipes — that a more voluble personality might have been disclosing in bits and chunks over the decades. Paterson, who speaks in a clipped, thoughtful manner with a bit of an Old World accent, is also going to do some talking about his 84 years. “Escape Home,” whose subtitle is “Rebuilding a Life after the Anschluss — A Family Memoir,” will be introduced with a book event at 4:30 on Thursday, Aug. 8. Paterson — along with Carrie, a writer and artist who lives in Los Angeles — will present a slide lecture, “An Émigré’s Vision for Post-War Aspen and an Emerging Modern Architecture,” and sign copies of the book. A second event, with the slide show and book signing, is set for Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Basalt Public Library, at 5:30.

Acts of Courage

Throughout his life, Paterson had been a busy person, and retirement was simply a time to move on to the next set of projects. On that list was the file of papers that Steven Shanzer, Paterson’s father, had compiled over the years. The files had existed in the Boomerang Lodge from 1952, when Shanzer joined his son in Aspen; in August of 1977, when the Paterson family moved to the house closer to the base of Aspen Mountain, the files and the wooden cabinet in which they were stored came with them. In all that time, Paterson never looked through the contents of the file. He knew some of what he would find: Going back to the middle of the 20th century, his father, part of a well-to-do and cultured Jewish family in Vienna, had kept documents regarding the family’s property, in the hope that some of what had been taken by the Nazis would be returned. But Paterson also had some inkling that there would be papers of an even more personal nature, that told a story he wasn’t sure he wanted to resurrect. “I went through my life ignoring the situation,” Paterson said of his past, which included persecution by the Germans, his mother’s suicide, and an eight-year separation from his beloved father. “There was no sense in making points about it. It was something I didn’t talk about. I didn’t talk about my Jewish background for years. That was the simplest way out.” But it was a story that wanted to be told. One early winter soon after his retirement, Paterson opened the files to find photographs, maps, Charlie and Fonda Paterson at their Boomerang Lodge in the 1990s. After operating the Boomerang for some 50 years, the Patersons sold the lodge in 2005.

recipes, and correspondence, including the entire mass of letters between Paterson and his father. “Like puzzle pieces, these letters, many written in German and French, have provided the key to remembrances of a lost time that remain with me still and bring this memoir live,” Paterson writes in the introduction to “Escape Home.” And in the next paragraph: “The adventures we told each other through the years lay before me undiluted and unedited by memory.” “My father kept every letter I ever wrote him since 1939, when we were at times separated — in Czechoslovakia, then France, Australia,” Paterson told me. “And when I came to Aspen and he lived in New York, I wrote him all the time. So my whole memory was at my disposal, my whole life was there. I spent days reading each letter. The discovery became the book.” In fact, the opening of the cabinet became the start of a large-scale family project. With Carrie as co-writer and researcher, and

P H OTO C O U RT E S Y O F C H A R L I E A N D C A R R I E PAT E R S O N

Fonda, who had the clearest recollection of the stories Steven told, as historian, the Patersons began assembling their family history. They traveled through Europe multiple times to find traces of where they had come from — relatives, including the prominent Austrian architect Adolf Loos; the house in Werkbundsiedlung, the progressive experimental Viennese neighborhood where Charlie spent his early childhood; the textile and banking businesses built by their ancestors; the gravesite of Paterson’s grandfather, Otto Beck, and mother, Eva Schanzer, in the Jewish cemetery in the Czech city of Pilsen. It is a tragedy that unfolds in the first half of “Escape Home,” going back to Steve Shanzer’s time as a World War I prisoner in Siberia, to the separation of Paterson and his sister Doris from their family, to a difficult time that Paterson and Doris spent as foster children with an emotionally distant family near Brisbane, on Australia’s east coast. (It was from this family that Charlie

“I HAD ALWAYS BEEN TRYING TO FIT INTO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. HERE, I WAS ONE OF MANY.” — — CHARLIE PATERSON took his last name.) “I think it’s an important witness document, a child’s witness document,” Fonda said of the book. “Having the courage to tell the story was a huge step for Charlie. And all of us, really. The willingness to accept, celebrate one’s past is tremendous.” “If you’re a reticent person and value you privacy, it’s courageous to lay everything out on the table, your whole life.”

A Place to Call Home

Possibly an even bigger act of courage is how Paterson, like many other displaced European Jews, put a horrific past behind them and started new lives elsewhere. “Escape Home” is ultimately a story of

triumph, even an American Dreamtype story — how a kid with nothing becomes a productive, significant member of a community. Asked how he sees his story, Paterson says, “I had in mind showing how someone with adversity could come out on top and make a life in another country. It would show young people they could do anything they wanted to do if they put their mind to it. And you had to have a lot of luck.” The ascendant part of Paterson’s life began in September of 1947, when Charlie, still a teenager, and his sister, 21 at the time, sailed from Sydney, landed in San Francisco, and arrived by train in New York City. There they reunited with their father, who had made a miraculous escape,

by bicycle, foot and train, through Nazioccupied France over the course of the summer of 1940. It had been eight years since they had seen Steve, and even then, Paterson was showing his ability to slough off the past. “My father had not changed a bit and did not seem to look a year older than when we last saw him. All that time we were apart just seemed to slip away,” Paterson wrote of the reunion. Of himself, he wrote: “I had transformed from boy to man, not any longer ‘European’ or ‘foreigner,’ but someone from the young country of Australia, and now America, who could see a bright future ahead.” In New York, Paterson went to high school, studied some engineering at New York City College, and took construction jobs. But perhaps the most momentous activity took place on a small hill in Central Park. Paterson and Doris would take their skis and slide down the hill. Eventually, each Sunday they had a crowd of people learning to ski, just off Fifth Avenue; that evolved into leading ski trips to New England. In February of 1949, Paterson, seeking something more like the Alps he knew from childhood, headed to

Colorado, planning to visit as many ski areas as his $35 would allow. At Arapahoe Basin, his mind open to adventure, he asked a woman about the green leaf on her sleeve. “Oh, it’s this fabulous new place called Aspen,” he was told. The following weekend, Paterson hitchhiked to the top of the Roaring Fork Valley, witnessed the North American Ski Championships on Aspen Mountain, scored free lift tickets by helping pack the race course, and landed a job as a bellhop at the Hotel Jerome. That summer, he worked as a stagehand for the Goethe Bicentennial, and witnessed the arrival in town of Dr. Albert Schweitzer, writer Thornton Wilder and the Minneapolis Symphony. Also, with the help of a barber named Jim Moore, he began looking for land to buy. Paterson adored the mountains, the culture, the diversity of the population, and the fact that he was seeing celebrities like the movie star Gary Cooper. But what really made him feel at home was the idea of Aspen as a starting point — not just for him, but for everyone, it seemed. “One reason I like it here is that everybody is from somewhere else,” he said. “I had always been trying to fit

into different situations. Here, I was one of many.” “I find that so telling and self-aware,” Fonda responded. “He wasn’t an outsider. Everyone was an outsider.” With money earned working on the set of “Devil’s Doorway,” a Hollywood Western being filmed near Maroon Lake, Paterson bought land near Shadow Mountain and began building a cabin. In 1952, one of his greatest dreams came true when Steve moved to Aspen and settled in the cabin with him. “When I came to Aspen, I saw an opportunity to get our family back together,” Paterson said, noting that his sister Doris lived much of her later life in Boulder. Paterson’s recollections of his early years in Aspen — being caught squatting in the Hotel Jerome; taking jobs in restaurants, in construction and as a ski instructor; using all means and materials available to slowly expand his property from a cabin to a small lodge; living the bachelor life with his father — is an invaluable addition to the literature on the birth of modern Aspen. “I described my everyday life. You put it on a personal note, you get a different perspective,” he said. “There was a sense of discovery and a sense of

pioneering. Here I am, this bellhop kid from the Hotel Jerome, rubbing elbows with multimillionaires, and we’ve become friends. That’s what the early days were. Most of us were in a similar situation, starting a new life with very little.”

Setting Down Roots

Paterson’s early adulthood also took place outside Aspen. There was a two-year stint in the Army; it was the quiet time between the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and Paterson spent much of his time training in the mountains around Colorado. More significant, Paterson trained in the late 1950s at Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural training grounds near Madison, Wisc. Chapters of “Escape Home” are devoted to the uncommon but valuable education — in architectural design, but also in music, movies, dining, philosophy and community — Paterson received at Wright’s modernist estate. Back in Aspen, Paterson used his training to design the Boomerang Lodge, a distinctive 36-room hotel with a hexagonal pool that was built in stages between 1961 and 1970. The Boomerang was designed for maximum interaction

between guests and staff, and became the sort of place visitors would return to year after year. Among the main attractions was Steve and his wealth of stories from Siberia and his escape from Europe. In 1968, a woman who had just graduated from the University of Iowa applied for a job at the Boomerang; soon after, Fonda married the boss. Paterson designed a handful of houses in the Aspen area, including the handsome home along the Roaring Fork where he has lived in for 36 years, and remodeled several others. But the business of running the Boomerang (which he sold in 2005; it has been an abandoned site awaiting redevelopment since) kept him from pursuing more of a career in architecture. The last several years have been devoted to getting a grasp on what those first 75 years or so contained, and what sense Paterson can make of them. Creating the book has been a satisfying chapter on its own. “Escape Home” was a family project that brought the Patersons — Charlie and Fonda, Carrie and her sister Jenny — closer, and brought them in touch with their ancestral history. (A set of family trees included in the book goes

back to the 17th century.) Another thing Paterson discovered in the process of writing the book is a newfound gratitude. Of his grandmother, who he had always thought of as stern, he said, “I didn’t realize how much she did for us and how much she loved us. She was a taskmaster, hard on us with our manners. But reading her letters, I realized how much more there was that I wasn’t aware of.”

A Life Fulfilled

In a life filled with more optimism and achievement than bitterness, “Escape Home” is the capping effort at finding meaning in a life that has included hardship, heartache, success and home. “How do you say it — déjà vu? All of a sudden, your whole youth, your experiences as a 10-year-old boy, is in front of you,” Paterson said. “I had some trepidations about laying my whole life out in public. But if you want to relive your life and get a sense of who you are, writing a memoir is a good way to do it. The book gives me a feeling of having a fulfilled life.”

The Paterson family — Carrie, Steve Shanzer, Charlie, Jenny and Fonda — on Steve’s 89th birthday in 1978.

BOOK REVIEW

‘WORKS CITED’ BRANDON R. SCHRAND’S second book, “Works Cited: An Alphabetical Odyssey of Mayhem and Misbehavior,” retraces the Idaho author’s life through his obsessive love of literature. Each personal essay is paired with notes about a book that influenced that time in his life, with entries varying from passing references to detailed tributes. The first essay introduces us to a college-age Schrand as he’s arrested in Arizona while driving through redrock canyons, smoking pot with his fraternity brothers. Schrand ends up missing out on a class discussion of Ed Abbey’s “Desert Solitaire,” although he has a copy of the book in the car. This beginning introduces four constants around which the memoir revolves: stunning Western landscapes, trouble with authority, a boy trying to become a man, and the books (not the classes) by ANDREW REYNOLDS | edited by WILL SHORTZ

he fell in love with along the way. Schrand first connects with the West — and with his own family’s story of settling in the region — through Wallace Stegner’s “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” Annie Proulx’s “Close Range,” and William Kittredge’s “Hole in the Sky.” He leaves a working-class life to attend Southern Utah University, and it takes him seven years to graduate; his conservative, wealthy classmates mock his long hair and his ignorance of grammar. Graduate school rejects him the first time around, but he takes refuge in books: “On some afternoons when charcoal thunderheads crowded the horizon, throwing the brushy hills into shadow, and when yellow-headed blackbirds pecked in the gravel parking lot, I would read.” Even as he gets married and starts a family, it is reading that

ultimately helps him find his way to maturity and, eventually, a career as a writer and professor. The flow of “Works Cited” is occasionally disorienting; rather than being chronologically organized, it is assembled alphabetically, using the name of each book’s author. Nevertheless, the structure functions as a creative way for Schrand to explore the emotional territory of his early adulthood. “Works Cited” is a riveting story about literature’s potential to transform a life, as we watch an undisciplined teenager with vague ambitions slowly become a self-aware and loving father, husband and author.
